  1. Thank you all. If you have your Bible, I want to turn to Genesis chapter 50.

    Genesis 50 chapter mention

  2. Genesis chapter 50. If you're one of those that mark your Bibles and puts the date and

    Genesis 50 chapter mention

  3. ! I know I preached part of this passage a couple of weeks ago. I haven't lost it,

  4. but I'm not going to say the same thing, I hope. I guess I'll never forget it. I played football

  5. in high school, and as a senior, we got a new coach who was a head coach for the first

  6. time, and he came in with a lot of vigor and took it out on us. He's a great coach. He won

  7. as long as he coached, and I'm thankful that he is now a wonderful Christian. I wish he

  8. had acted more like one when he treated us the way he treated us in practice. Summer

  9. camp started with what he called county fair, which sounded fun to me, and I came with a

  10. lot of excitement. Little did I know that we'd be running around cones on our hands and feet

  11. and pushing sleds with coaches standing on them, big sleds with big coaches, and they'd

  12. put us in a circle and let other guys take shots at us, and water? Well, you didn't need

  13. water in those days. I didn't believe in it. And whenever they did give it to you, maybe

  14. once, that you ran over to a PVC pipe that was attached to the dugout with holes drilled

  15. in it, and like a pack of dogs eating out of one food bowl, you tried to get a sip of water.

  16. It was awful, but boy, it was great, you know. And when we thought we couldn't take it anymore,

  17. he'd sit us down, and he'd go over the intangibles. In the locker room, there were a piece of plywood

  18. that had been painted with either words or statements put on them. I contacted two guys that I played

  19. football with this week and said, remind me of a couple of those. He called them intangibles.

  20. Remind me of a couple more of those intangibles, and they couldn't remember anything either. So I remember

  21. one of them, and so what he'd do, he taught us those things, and then before football game, we'd go to

  22. middle school, and before we would have our meal, our pregame meal, we'd sit in the library at the

  23. middle school to get us away from the high school atmosphere. And he'd say, let's go over the intangibles.

  24. Give me an intangible. Some of them would say, Oski. So when you hear Oski, what does that mean?

  25. That means somebody intercepted the ball. And that means that if you were playing defense,

  26. when somebody yells Oski, you turn around and start blocking. You look for somebody to hit. And so

  27. somebody with a lot of vigor would say, you find somebody to hit. You go the different way, you know.

  28. Yeah. But the one I really stands out to me, and I think that's how I remember as much as I do

  29. anything. Any old nag can start a race, but it takes a thoroughbred to finish. We had a bunch of

  30. people go out to start with, and then they'd fall out like flies when they got in the heat. And every

  31. time somebody'd fall out, he'd stand before us and go, any old nag can start a race, but it takes a

  32. thoroughbred to finish. It was such a memorable statement. As the summer went on, we ridiculed the

  33. quitters. Any old nag can start a race. My heart ran through my head as I ran the sprints in the summer,

  34. and boys would be leaning over the fence, losing their breakfast, and oh, what a life. Any old nag can

  35. start a race. It takes thoroughbred to finish. Echoed in my bones as my bones rattled, my fingers crushed,

  36. and I fell. I don't think I mounted much, but I was there to the end. And there's something to be said

  37. about being there until the end. Because a lot of people can start out strong, but that don't mean

  38. much. Have you ever watched the 400 meters or the 800 meter races? What you'll notice is that

  39. the guys who usually start out winning that race are not the ones that win it. The ones that are

  40. leading in the beginning usually pale out. Kentucky Derby. Love to watch the Kentucky Derby. Those horses

  41. that come out of the gate strong, very seldom are the ones that win in the end. It's all about finishing.

  42. Hardly ever is the winner in front at the start, but that leads, those that lead at first sometimes

  43. never make it to the end. And the reality is the Christian life is a lot like that.

  44. So many claim to be saved and they claim to love God and to be faithful. However, time tells another story.

  45. As they go on, something changes. Too many fall by the spiritual wayside. And it's not that some are

  46. perfect and others are not. It's not that at all. All of us are imperfect. But some of us keep coming to the

  47. perfect one. Some of us keep going to the one that can help us while others lean on their own

  48. ability or try to find help from another source. And well, we're not only to start for Jesus, we're to finish

  49. the course. We look today at two men who were faithful for their entire lives. They were not perfect by any

  50. means. Thankfully, because if they were, we couldn't relate to them. And I believe that

  51. God puts these men in Scripture for us to watch and to learn from. And Scripture is so true. It shows

  52. everything. It tells the real story. This morning, we look at Joseph and his father, Jacob. Joseph, as we've

  53. seen, did live a good, faithful life, regardless of what came. But he was not perfect. And Jacob, his father,

  54. was faithful to God. Perfect by no means. He needed a course in fatherhood especially.

  55. However, both finished well. And we can learn from their example.

  56. Genesis 50, beginning in verse 15, says this,

  57. When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said,

  58. It may be that Joseph will hate us and pay us back for all the evil that we did to him.

  59. So they sent a message to Joseph saying,

  60. Your father gave this command before he died. Say to Joseph,

  61. Please forgive the transgression of your brothers and their sins,

  62. because they did evil to you. And now please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.

  63. Joseph wept when they spoke to him.

  64. His brothers also came and fell down before him

  65. and said, Behold, we are your servants.

  66. But Joseph said to them, Do not fear,

  67. for am I in the place of God?

  68. As for you,

  69. you meant evil against me,

  70. but God meant it for good

  71. to bring it about that many people should be

  72. kept alive as they are today.

  73. So do not fear.

  74. I will provide

  75. for you and your little ones.

  76. Thus he comforted

  77. them and spoke kindly.

  78. To them.

  79. So Joseph remained in Egypt.

  80. He and his father's house.

  81. Joseph lived

  82. 110 years.

  83. And Joseph saw Ephraim's children

  84. of the third generation.

  85. The children also

  86. of Bacar,

  87. the son of Manasseh,

  88. were counted as

  89. Joseph's own.

  90. Amen.

  91. And Joseph said to his brothers,

  92. I'm about to die,

  93. but God will visit you

  94. and bring you out of this land

  95. to the land he swore

  96. to Abraham,

  97. to Isaac,

  98. and to Jacob.

  99. Then Joseph

  100. made the sons of Israel

  101. swear,

  102. saying,

  103. God will surely visit you

  104. and you shall carry

  105. my bones from here.

  106. So Joseph died

  107. being 110 years old.

  108. They embalmed him

  109. and he was put

  110. in a coffin

  111. in Egypt.

  112. Whether young or old,

  113. if you're a Christian,

  114. there is a journey

  115. ahead for you.

  116. You're in the midst

  117. of that journey,

  118. but there is more

  119. to come.

  120. You have not

  121. reached the end.

  122. Your job

  123. is not done.

  124. There's more

  125. to come.

  126. You may have

  127. today.

  128. You may have

  129. a year.

  130. You may have

  131. a generation

  132. or two.

  133. But whatever we have,

  134. we are to pursue

  135. God's goal for us.

  136. Jacob and Joseph

  137. gives us

  138. some guidelines

  139. on how to finish

  140. well.

  141. First,

  142. Jacob shows us

  143. that we ought

  144. to be a blessing

  145. to our families.

  146. We ought to be

  147. a blessing

  148. to our families.

  149. Hebrews 11,

    Hebrews 11:21

  150. verse 21 says,

  151. By faith,

  152. Jacob,

  153. when dying,

  154. blessed each

  155. of the sons

  156. of Joseph,

  157. bowing in worship

  158. over the head

  159. of his staff.

  160. As Jacob's

  161. journey wound

  162. down to a close,

  163. he didn't get

  164. selfish.

  165. Jacob had been

  166. blessed and was

  167. determined to be

  168. a blessing,

  169. so he blessed.

  170. After Joseph

  171. was reunited

  172. with his father

  173. after many years,

  174. he soon found

  175. that his father

  176. was dying,

  177. and therefore

  178. he took his sons,

  179. Manasseh and Ephraim,

  180. to his father,

  181. Jacob,

  182. and asked his

  183. father to bless

  184. them.

  185. That's in

  186. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 48 chapter mention

  187. 48.

  188. And when I say

  189. bless them,

  190. what do I mean

  191. by that?

  192. I mean he directed

  193. them with a word

  194. from the Lord.

  195. He encouraged

  196. them to go

  197. forward in God,

  198. and he laid

  199. his hands upon

  200. them and prayed

  201. for them.

  202. He didn't focus

  203. on himself,

  204. he focused on

  205. others.

  206. Friend,

  207. that's not only

  208. a good way to die,

  209. that's a good way

  210. to live.

  211. Genesis 49

  212. tells us the same

  213. thing happened

  214. with his own

  215. sons.

  216. So special

  217. events in

  218. crucial times.

  219. I want all

  220. of us to

  221. finish well.

  222. That's what I

  223. asked the deacons

  224. for.

  225. Just a few

  226. days after I

  227. was out of the

  228. hospital after a

  229. cardiac arrest,

  230. I asked,

  231. as the book

  232. of James

  233. tells us,

  234. I asked the

  235. elders of the

  236. church to come

  237. to lay hands

  238. on me and

  239. pray for me.

  240. And when I

  241. asked them to

  242. pray, I told

  243. them, pray that

  244. I'm not

  245. compromised.

  246. Pray that I'm

  247. not weakened.

  248. Pray that I'll

  249. be strong until

  250. the end.

  251. God's doing

  252. wonderful things

  253. in Pickens

  254. First Baptist

  255. Church.

  256. I don't want to

  257. do anything to

  258. be a hindrance to

  259. that, and I

  260. don't want to

  261. slow down at

  262. all.

  263. So, maybe

  264. make me wiser

  265. in how to

  266. do it, but

  267. Lord, give me

  268. the strength to

  269. carry out as

  270. long as you

  271. give me breath.

  272. Well, we

  273. ought to live

  274. well, too.

  275. Don't wait

  276. until your

  277. final breath,

  278. but the

  279. blessings don't

  280. have to be at

  281. the end of our

  282. lives.

  283. As God told

  284. Abraham in

  285. Genesis 12, he

  286. tells us through

  287. the cross.

  288. In Genesis 12,

  289. he told Abraham,

  290. I blessed you.

  291. Now, I'll

  292. make you a

  293. blessing, and

  294. now you go

  295. be a blessing.

  296. And that's

  297. exactly what he

  298. wants us to do.

  299. He wants us to

  300. be a blessing.

  301. Regardless of

  302. what you did or

  303. didn't do for

  304. God yesterday, be

  305. a blessing today.

  306. Bless others as

  307. long as God

  308. gives you breath.

  309. The second thing

  310. he told us about

  311. finishing the

  312. course was Joseph

  313. shows us to be at

  314. peace.

  315. peace.

  316. Be at peace.

  317. Joseph had a lot

  318. to be bitter

  319. about.

  320. He did.

  321. So much that his

  322. brothers were scared

  323. of him after their

  324. dad died.

  325. But Joseph was not

  326. superficial.

  327. He knew the story

  328. was bigger than his

  329. brothers.

  330. He saw the bigger

  331. picture.

  332. To read verse 20 is

  333. powerful and life

  334. changing.

  335. It's one of the most

  336. significant passages in

  337. the book of Genesis.

  338. And in Genesis chapter 50

    Genesis 50:20

  339. verse 20 it says,

  340. as for you, you meant

  341. evil against me but

  342. God meant it for good.

  343. To bring it about that

  344. many people should be

  345. kept alive as they are

  346. today.

  347. One of the most

  348. ungodly feelings that

  349. we can feel is

  350. bitterness.

  351. To refuse to

  352. forgive.

  353. Not only does that

  354. destroy our

  355. relationships with

  356. hate but it is

  357. systemic.

  358. You cannot

  359. compartmentalize that

  360. kind of stuff.

  361. Especially if it is

  362. those you are close

  363. to.

  364. It affects you and

  365. you affect other

  366. relationships.

  367. And that all is a

  368. serious matter to God.

  369. I want you to notice

  370. what Christ says about

  371. it.

  372. It's in Matthew

    Matthew 5:23

  373. chapter 5 verse 23

  374. and 24.

  375. And he says this.

  376. So if you, so if

  377. you're offering your

  378. gift to the altar and

  379. there remember that your

  380. brother has something

  381. against you.

  382. Leave your gift there

  383. before the altar and go.

  384. First be reconciled to

  385. your brother and then

  386. come and offer your

  387. gift.

  388. Now I will add a

  389. pastoral note there.

  390. Notice that he says

  391. leave your gift.

  392. Okay.

  393. You don't take it with

  394. you.

  395. Leave your gift.

  396. In reality what he's

  397. saying is when the

  398. Holy Spirit of God

  399. convicts you, not

  400. enough of y'all laughed

  401. at that.

  402. I was kidding.

  403. Somewhat.

  404. Jesus is saying when the

  405. Holy Spirit convicts you

  406. about a strained

  407. relationship, go above

  408. and beyond to take care

  409. of that.

  410. When the Holy Spirit of

  411. God speaks to you when

  412. you worship together in

  413. this place, don't ignore

  414. it when you leave here.

  415. Deal with it as God

  416. allows you to.

  417. And keep some things in

  418. mind.

  419. And I love what Paul said

  420. in Romans 12 verse 18.

    Romans 12:18

  421. He said, if possible, so

  422. far as it depends on you,

  423. live peaceably with all.

  424. Do all you can.

  425. There ain't so much you

  426. can do, but do all you

  427. can to live peaceably with

  428. others.

  429. Some people don't want to

  430. live peaceably.

  431. And because they ain't

  432. happy, they don't want you

  433. happy.

  434. They don't want you to live

  435. peaceably.

  436. But don't be that person,

  437. okay?

  438. Just don't be that person.

  439. There's also something

  440. biblical that you can do

  441. daily.

  442. Ephesians chapter 4 verse 26

    Ephesians 4:26

  443. and 27 says this.

  444. Be angry and do not sin.

  445. Don't let your son go down

  446. on the anger and give no

  447. opportunity to the devil.

  448. Our stubborn natures or maybe

  449. our hurt feelings will let

  450. stuff hang around way too

  451. long.

  452. And if you let it stay there,

  453. it'll fester, it'll infect,

  454. it'll run over.

  455. Bitterness will take you over

  456. like kutzu will if you're not

  457. determined to give that up to

  458. the Lord.

  459. So solve it every day.

  460. Don't go to bed angry.

  461. Joseph had a lot to be angry

  462. about.

  463. But he chose to bury the axe.

  464. And he didn't bury it in his

  465. brother's necks.

  466. He did it long before they came

  467. to him scared, I believe.

  468. As a matter of fact, it seems

  469. obvious to me that he did it

  470. before he saw him coming for

  471. food the first time.

  472. He dealt with it.

  473. But not only did he forgive him,

  474. but he told him.

  475. He told him.

  476. He was at peace.

  477. Peace.

  478. Don't ever misunderstand the

  479. word peace.

  480. Peace does not mean the

  481. absence of conflict.

  482. You will have conflict in this

  483. life.

  484. If that's what you're looking

  485. for is an absence of

  486. conflict, it's not going to

  487. happen on this earth.

  488. And you know why?

  489. Because we are an imperfect

  490. people.

  491. And we are an imperfect people

  492. and who live in the midst of

  493. sinners.

  494. And some of those sinners are

  495. saved by grace.

  496. And some of those sinners are

  497. not.

  498. And so we live in the midst of

  499. that.

  500. We're going to have conflict

  501. along the way.

  502. It's going to happen.

  503. Our sin causes conflict.

  504. Peace is not an absence of

  505. conflict.

  506. It is instead God's intervention

  507. into the midst of the conflict.

  508. It is the calmness that passes all

  509. understanding.

  510. It is the presence in the midst of

  511. the storm.

  512. In 2011, we went to the Southern

  513. Baptist Convention in Phoenix,

  514. Arizona.

  515. We lived in Mississippi at the

  516. time.

  517. And because the convention from

  518. time to time, it used to be about

  519. every seven years.

  520. Now it's more like every five years

  521. or so.

  522. Go out west.

  523. We always try to make a trip of it

  524. to see something.

  525. And we had bought a new van and we

  526. loaded up the kids and we drove

  527. across the Panhandle of Texas and out

  528. to Albuquerque and Phoenix and saw

  529. Santa Fe and went to the convention

  530. and then drove up, saw the Grand Canyon

  531. and Durango and Colorado Springs and came

  532. across Kansas.

  533. It was a great trip.

  534. And while we were gone, my grandmother

  535. had got sick.

  536. And on the last morning of that trip, we

  537. were about to head out after being gone

  538. for two weeks.

  539. I called my mom and dad to check on

  540. grandma and I found out she had passed

  541. in the night.

  542. We went to our home in Mississippi that

  543. day.

  544. That was our last day on the road.

  545. And we went to our home and we washed

  546. our drawers as fast as we could and we

  547. loaded back up and went to South Carolina.

  548. Along with her pastor, I preached my

  549. grandmother's funeral.

  550. Now my grandmother loved Jesus as much

  551. as anyone that I've ever met.

  552. She was an independent, free will, hard

  553. shell, jugular vein, blood washed,

  554. spirit filled, sanctified to the bone,

  555. Baptist child of God.

  556. Praise God.

  557. And if you don't know what that means, I'm

  558. sorry.

  559. You've missed it.

  560. She had been to the spout when the glory

  561. came out and she hadn't got over it.

  562. And she was 96 years old.

  563. And in her last years, she wondered what

  564. the Lord was waiting on.

  565. But she trusted him.

  566. She leaned on him and she was at peace

  567. with him.

  568. When her pastor would come to see her,

  569. she'd tell him, just keep telling people

  570. that Jesus still saves.

  571. The last time I saw her alive, we gathered

  572. in a circle to pray as my family left

  573. Greenville to go back to Mississippi about

  574. three months before she died.

  575. And my mama asked her to pray.

  576. And pray she did.

  577. The rafters shook when grandma prayed.

  578. And that's because she had a lot of practice.

  579. She prayed for a hedge of protection around us.

  580. She prayed that God would put angels to ride

  581. on the bumpers of the car.

  582. The spirit of God would lead us.

  583. I drove faster home because my grandma had

  584. prayed for me.

  585. And I was told that as she laid on her deathbed,

  586. she prayed, Lord, I've tried to live my life

  587. to honor you in every way, Lord Jesus.

  588. Please have mercy on me.

  589. And he did.

  590. And she went on to glory.

  591. As was written in her obituary,

  592. 1 Timothy chapter 4 says,

    1 Timothy 4 chapter mention

  593. For I am already being poured out as a drink offering.

  594. And the time of my departure has come.

  595. I've fought the good fight.

  596. I've finished the race.

  597. I've kept the faith.

  598. Henceforth there is laid up for me

  599. the crown of righteousness,

  600. which the Lord, the righteous judge,

  601. will award to me on that day.

  602. And not only to me,

  603. but also to all who have loved his appearing.

  604. My grandma died at peace with the Lord.

  605. And do you know why?

  606. Because she lived at peace.

  607. Peace with the Lord.

  608. So did Joseph.

  609. Be at peace with the Lord.

  610. And lastly, go out with vision.

  611. When the eyes of Jacob and Joseph

  612. grew dim in their life,

  613. their vision for God only grew brighter

  614. as they approached their home going.

  615. Jacob and Joseph had seen the hand of God.

  616. They had heard the will of God.

  617. They had trusted the vision of God.

  618. And Jacob told them at the end of chapter 49,

  619. bury me with my family.

  620. Now listen, when Jacob says bury my family,

  621. that's not just any family.

  622. His family is Abraham, Isaac, Jacob,

  623. the patriarchs of the chosen people,

  624. the nation of Israel.

  625. He said, that's where I belong.

  626. Bury me with them.

  627. And Joseph knew that the same God

  628. would lead his people out of Egypt

  629. and would bring them to a land

  630. that he had promised them.

  631. That was his vision.

  632. That was his confidence in the Lord.

  633. That was his direction by the hand of God.

  634. He saw God's vision shine

  635. even as earth's vision dimmed.

  636. And my friend,

  637. as long as God gives us breath,

  638. that's what we ought to do.

  639. Not get selfish,

  640. but have vision.

  641. For what God's got in store.

  642. Beyond us.

  643. Let's get beyond us.

  644. What's God gonna do?

  645. I was on the treadmill this week

  646. at cardiac rehab.

  647. And there was a quote

  648. taped to that treadmill

  649. that said this,

  650. Don't count the days.

  651. Make the days count.

  652. My friend,

  653. maybe you've started well.

  654. And maybe you haven't.

  655. Maybe you came out of the gate

  656. a little slow.

  657. Regardless,

  658. the good news is

  659. today's a new day.

  660. And it's the first day

  661. of the rest of your life.

  662. And so as long as God gives us breath,

  663. let's live for his glory.

  664. Let's live a legacy.

  665. Leave a legacy.

  666. Let's

  667. let's

  668. finish well

  669. through obedience.

  670. A life

  671. that is filled

  672. with sacrifice.

  673. A life

  674. that's filled

  675. with commitment.

  676. A life

  677. that's not filled

  678. with us.

  679. A life

  680. that's filled

  681. with Jesus.

  682. With every head

  683. bowed

  684. and every eye

  685. closed,

  686. I want to ask you

  687. this morning

  688. if you've ever

  689. given your heart

  690. and life

  691. to the Lord

  692. Jesus Christ.

  693. If you've ever

  694. confessed your sins

  695. to him

  696. and asked you

  697. to come into your life

  698. and save you

  699. and change you.

  700. if that's

  701. never happened

  702. to you,

  703. I want to

  704. encourage you

  705. today

  706. to give your

  707. life to Christ.

  708. To trust

  709. him.

  710. We're going to

  711. stand in just a moment

  712. and we're going to sing

  713. and as we do,

  714. I encourage you

  715. if you've never

  716. given your life

  717. to Christ,

  718. you come

  719. and say,

  720. Pastor,

  721. I need to be saved.

  722. Maybe you're here

  723. and you have done that

  724. and you've never

  725. acknowledged that

  726. publicly through baptism.

  727. We plan to baptize

  728. next Sunday.

  729. I'd love to talk

  730. to you about that

  731. if you've never

  732. followed the Lord

  733. in obedience baptism.

  734. Maybe you're here

  735. and God's leading you

  736. to First Baptist Church

  737. and I'm thankful

  738. for God's blessing us

  739. and moving in our midst

  740. and I'm thankful

  741. for that.

  742. And if you feel like

  743. the Lord's leading you

  744. to come,

  745. I encourage you to come.

  746. I'd love to talk

  747. to you about that.

  748. Or maybe you're here

  749. like most of us

  750. and you look

  751. at your life

  752. and you see things

  753. that you need

  754. to lay down

  755. before the Lord.

  756. Today's the first day

  757. of the rest of our lives.

  758. So why don't we live

  759. the rest of our lives

  760. to please Him,

  761. to honor Him

  762. in all we do?

  763. Whether it be

  764. in the pew

  765. where you'll stand

  766. in just a moment

  767. or whether it be

  768. at this altar

  769. or whether it be

  770. with a pastor

  771. praying for you.

  772. Obey God.

  773. Trust Him.

  774. Respond to Him.

  775. And then leave here

  776. different

  777. however He's told you

  778. to be different.

  779. Lord Jesus,

  780. I love you

  781. and I thank you

  782. for the love

  783. that you have for us.

  784. and I ask

  785. to your God

  786. that you'll work

  787. and you'll move

  788. in our midst

  789. right now

  790. that you'll have

  791. your will

  792. and your way.

  793. Help us to be obedient

  794. to follow you

  795. as you lead.

  796. In Jesus' precious name,

  797. Amen.

  798. Amen.

  799. Stay tuned.
