  1. The life-changing gospel of Jesus is not just a saying, it changes lives.

  2. ! When Christ came to Simon Peter and to Andrew, they left the seashore.

  3. When he came to James and John, they left Zebedee, their dad, and the family business.

  4. And followed Christ.

  5. When he came to a Jewish tax collector, contracted to the Romans to rip off the Jews, Matthew

  6. walked away from the tax booth.

  7. All of their lives were changed.

  8. All became disciples of Christ, those intimate twelve that walked with him.

  9. Later, Peter spread the gospel like no other in the days after the ascension of the Lord.

  10. John was used mightily of God.

  11. We've got four books in the New Testament that show that.

  12. He mentions twice among those works the reason why he writes what he does, the purpose behind it.

  13. It's found one time in John chapter 20, verse 31.

    John 20:31

  14. He said, I write these events so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God,

  15. and that by believing you may have life in his name.

  16. It was the reason he wrote.

  17. Matthew never returned to the tax booth, but he took his pen with him.

  18. And instead of keeping an account of people's taxes, instead he wrote an account of the works of Christ.

  19. It is the first book of the New Testament.

  20. The gospel really does change lives.

  21. Now, I could go around this room this morning and ask you to share how Christ has changed your life.

  22. And many of you could immediately share how Christ has changed your life.

  23. And many of you would look at me and say, don't you dare stick a microphone in my face.

  24. I understand that too.

  25. However, I will tell you that if you're a child of God this morning and Christ has changed your life,

  26. you need to be ready to give an account of that to any and all that God puts in your path.

  27. The gospel, the real gospel is life-changing.

  28. And others need to hear it, and we need to share it as Christ has commissioned us to,

  29. and we need to hear ourselves sharing it because it reminds us of what we got when we got Christ.

  30. But don't you dare think that when you do that, that everybody's going to be happy with you.

  31. Don't you dare believe that everybody is going to be agreeable or that everybody's going to be celebrating with you.

  32. When Jesus came, lives were changed, and everybody wasn't happy about it.

  33. But we've already seen some of that, and it just keeps building throughout this gospel.

  34. And Jesus has an answer for it.

  35. It's found in Mark chapter 2, beginning in verse 18, and it says,

    Mark 2 chapter mention

  36. Now John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting.

  37. And people came and said to him,

  38. Why do John's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?

  39. And Jesus said to them,

  40. Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?

  41. As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.

  42. The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them,

  43. and then they will fast in that day.

  44. No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on old garment.

  45. If he does, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made.

  46. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins.

  47. If he does, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins.

  48. But new wine is for fresh wineskins.

  49. People resist change.

  50. They don't like it.

  51. Mark Twain said,

  52. The only people who like change are wet babies.

  53. And C.S. Lewis said,

  54. Everyone wants progress, but nobody wants change.

  55. Jesus brought change.

  56. Everywhere he went, he brought change.

  57. He still brings change.

  58. And the change in a life given to Christ is the evidence of the reality of Christ in that life.

  59. But that does not mean that everyone will like it.

  60. They won't.

  61. I remember I mentioned last week with all the good news of the gospel

  62. that there also comes the scorn of the gospel from a lot of people.

  63. And I want you to watch this progression that we've already seen in the gospel of Mark.

  64. We'll continue to see it.

  65. Christ comes to Capernaum.

  66. He's teaching.

  67. And Mark tells us that he teaches with great authority, quote, unlike the scribes.

  68. Well, now that's a hint of what's coming down the pike.

  69. One with a demon comes to him.

  70. He casts out the demon.

  71. That draws a crowd.

  72. He heals many in the crowd.

  73. And then he goes out preaching throughout Galilee and the surrounding areas,

  74. casting out demons as he goes from village to village.

  75. The crowd grows as he goes.

  76. More lives are affected.

  77. He comes back to Capernaum.

  78. And when he comes back to Capernaum, the pharisaical scribes come to hear him.

  79. They've heard about him.

  80. They come to hear him.

  81. They're sitting in the front row in that home when he heals a paralytic and takes away his sins.

  82. And when Jesus said he took away the man's sins, well, that's a claim that he's God.

  83. And the scribes, because nobody can take away sins but God.

  84. And so the scribes didn't like it.

  85. He changes Levi, also known as Matthew's life.

  86. And then he sits down with Matthew's friends in a big banquet in Matthew's house with other tax collectors and, quote, sinners.

  87. That really upset them.

  88. Now we get to our passage today and the Pharisees are apparently involved in a fast that Jesus has not acknowledged.

  89. And they want to know why he's not fasting.

  90. Now, I want to be clear.

  91. Jesus fasted.

  92. He fasted in the desert for 40 days.

  93. And he gave instructions to his disciples in Matthew 6 about how to fast.

  94. He did it.

  95. And he expected it to be done.

  96. It is still a great godly discipline to fast for prayerful reasons.

  97. You'll see a pattern of that in the Old Testament of God's people fasting.

  98. Sometimes in preparation, they inquired of the Lord concerning what their next steps would be.

  99. Sometimes they fasted asking God to intervene in their circumstances.

  100. You also see them fasting when they're repenting or when they're mourning over their sins.

  101. There's only one fast that is prescribed in Scripture in the Old Testament.

  102. And that's the Day of Atonement or Yom Kippur, which is coming up this Thursday.

  103. And that's the only time that they were asked to fast on that Day of Atonement.

  104. But in addition to that, you see all kinds of other fasts that are called for special called reasons.

  105. There's one-day fast.

  106. There's three-day fast.

  107. There's seven-day fast.

  108. There's 40-day fast, as our Lord did in the desert.

  109. They fasted more during the exile than any other time because they wasn't at home.

  110. And they wanted to go home.

  111. And they were asking God to help them in the midst of that.

  112. The Purim fast was established after God used Esther to save the Jews.

  113. And God's people were fasting and praying for Esther in that circumstance.

  114. And God used her for such a time as this.

  115. And after he used her, they established the Purim fast to remember how God brought them out through Esther's obedience.

  116. However, by the time we get to our passage in Mark chapter 2, the Pharisees have added to that.

    Mark 2 chapter mention

  117. They make it a habit to fast.

  118. They fast twice a week, Mondays and Thursdays.

  119. And they want people to know that they do that.

  120. As a matter of fact, they put whitener on their face to make themselves look more pale.

  121. They put a sick look on their faces.

  122. And they walk around in gloom, trying to get people's attention.

  123. Don't do that.

  124. Okay?

  125. Don't do that.

  126. If you're having a colonoscopy tomorrow and you're preparing for it, you can do that.

  127. Okay?

  128. But do it at home.

  129. Okay?

  130. Because it could get ugly.

  131. But I'll hear about that at lunch.

  132. But anyway, we need not look like folks of gloom and doom.

  133. If Christ is within us, it ought to reflect, inform your face of what God's done in your heart.

  134. And that's what Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount.

  135. He said in Matthew 6, this is what he's referring to, is this fasting process.

  136. Matthew 6, 16 through 18, he says this.

  137. And when you fast, that's instructions too fast, by the way.

  138. And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites.

  139. For they disfigure their faces, that their fasting may be seen by others.

  140. Truly I say to you, they have received the reward.

  141. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others,

  142. but by your Father who is in heaven in secret.

  143. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

  144. He also refers to this in a parable that he uses in Luke chapter 18.

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  145. When the Pharisee prays, God, I thank you that I'm not like other men.

  146. And then he starts naming other people that he's, and what they do, and how they act, and all that stuff,

  147. that he's not like them.

  148. And then he says, and I fast twice a week.

  149. That's his prayer.

  150. Apparently our passage speaks of a time when the Pharisees are participating in one of their regular fasts

  151. while Jesus is feasting with the sinners and the tax collectors.

  152. I guess it was on a Thursday or maybe a Monday.

  153. Whatever.

  154. They were very upset about that.

  155. Not only was the Pharisees fasting, but also John's disciples were fasting.

  156. Speaking of John the Baptist.

  157. Now, I want to be clear about something.

  158. The Pharisees and the disciples of John were not partners by any means,

  159. but they're both fasting as well.

  160. John's disciples are fasting in anticipation of a coming Messiah that John had talked about.

  161. Let me explain.

  162. When John the Baptist was preaching in the wilderness of Judea before Christ came,

  163. he drew quite a crowd.

  164. Matthew chapter 3 verse 5 says,

    Matthew 3:5

  165. Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him.

  166. So there were literally thousands of people that were coming out there.

  167. Okay.

  168. Different people on different days, but they were coming.

  169. You know who else came out to hear him?

  170. The Pharisees.

  171. As a matter of fact, when they came out to hear him,

  172. John the Baptist called them children of snakes.

  173. He confronted them because he saw their hypocrisy.

  174. In addition to that, Jesus went out to John.

  175. And Jesus told John to baptize him.

  176. But I want to be clear about something.

  177. All those people that believe John's message

  178. and all those people who follow John along the way,

  179. they were not there, not all of them, when John baptized Jesus.

  180. And then, it wasn't long after that baptism that John the Baptist is arrested.

  181. He's thrown in prison.

  182. He will be killed.

  183. But by him being thrown in prison,

  184. it preempts him from getting the message out that the Messiah had come.

  185. We see in the book of Acts, there's questions about it from John's disciples.

  186. So either they didn't witness the baptism,

  187. and apparently they didn't witness it,

  188. nor did they hear that Jesus had come,

  189. so they didn't know.

  190. So they're still fasting in anticipation of the Messiah

  191. that John the Baptist proclaimed so loudly.

  192. The combination of these two groups,

  193. distinctive groups, but they have a common bond.

  194. They're both fasting.

  195. The combination of these two groups caused people to ask questions.

  196. And when they asked, Jesus answered.

  197. And he addressed three matters.

  198. The first thing he addressed is the insufficiency of a man-made gospel.

  199. The insufficiency of a man-made gospel.

  200. Listen, religion is what many people rely on,

  201. and religion is empty without Christ.

  202. And if in Christ, it's not religion, it's relationship.

  203. It's relationship with Christ.

  204. Salvation does not come through our actions.

  205. We cannot earn it.

  206. Salvation does not come through our sacrifice.

  207. We cannot buy it.

  208. Salvation does not come through our appearance,

  209. no matter how gloomy or pitiful that we may try to look.

  210. It does not come through our knowledge.

  211. Satan knows about the things of God and knows Scripture quite well.

  212. It does not come that way.

  213. Judaism was to prepare the Jews for Jesus.

  214. However, they missed Jesus.

  215. And without an acknowledgment of Jesus, it is condemning.

  216. Any works-based system is condemning.

  217. Any of them.

  218. No matter how many confessions are made,

  219. no matter how many candles are burned,

  220. no matter how many communions are taken,

  221. outside of a surrender to Christ,

  222. Catholicism is just a man-made religion.

  223. It is empty ritual outside of Christ.

  224. No matter how many missions are served,

  225. no matter how many temples are attended,

  226. no matter how many caffeinated drinks are abstained,

  227. for a Mormon, it's just empty man-made religion without Christ.

  228. And it's not the Christ that they have created

  229. because the Christ that the Mormon church has created

  230. is not part of the Trinity.

  231. Their Christ was not divine while he was on the earth.

  232. And you have to earn it through works and efforts.

  233. Friend, listen, that's not Christ.

  234. That's a cult.

  235. And when they accept Christ by grace through faith,

  236. they'll leave false, empty religion.

  237. However, without Christ, it's just a religion.

  238. Jehovah's Witnesses can knock on doors until the cows come home.

  239. But they'll never know Jesus as long as they believe that he's a mere archangel

  240. and not Almighty God.

  241. And let's just bring it on home while we're here.

  242. Listen, old Baptists.

  243. Good old Baptists.

  244. No matter how much you attend,

  245. no matter how much you give,

  246. and I encourage you to do both,

  247. it does your soul no good without Christ.

  248. You need the Lord Jesus.

  249. You cannot align yourself to Jesus

  250. or buy your way to Jesus.

  251. You must surrender your life to Christ

  252. and let him have his way,

  253. not in some way in your life,

  254. in every way in your life.

  255. The man-made gospel,

  256. even with fasting,

  257. even with sacrifice,

  258. is insufficient for salvation.

  259. That only comes by faith in Christ.

  260. My salvation

  261. does not rest in me.

  262. It rests in the cross of Christ.

  263. And no one can snatch me out of the hand of the Father.

  264. We rest there.

  265. Any man-made gospel is insufficient.

  266. He also says,

  267. he also speaks to and addresses the seamless nature of the real gospel.

  268. And he gives three illustrations in this passage.

  269. And I want to deal with the second two first.

  270. It's in verse 21 and 22,

  271. and it says this,

  272. no one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment.

  273. If he does,

  274. the patch tears away from it.

  275. The new one from the old

  276. and the worst tear is made.

  277. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins.

  278. If he does,

  279. the wine will burst the skins

  280. and the wine is destroyed.

  281. And so are the skins.

  282. But new wine

  283. is for fresh wineskins.

  284. In that day,

  285. juice was stored in pouches

  286. made of goat skin.

  287. A goat was skinned

  288. and the hide would be uncut

  289. except at the legs and the neck.

  290. That skin was cleaned.

  291. It was turned,

  292. usually it was turned inside out.

  293. It was sealed shut at the leg openings.

  294. That left the neck as a spout

  295. that made it easy to pour.

  296. Fresh skins are elastic

  297. and they could expand.

  298. So when you put juice into them

  299. and that begins to ferment,

  300. that skin will expand.

  301. However,

  302. if you have an old skin

  303. and you put new juice in it

  304. and it ferments into wine,

  305. it'll burst

  306. and not only will the skin be ruined,

  307. but you'll lose the juice as well.

  308. The wine will be gone.

  309. He also speaks

  310. of an unshrunk patch of clothing

  311. being sewn to older clothing

  312. and that will not work

  313. because the first time you wash it,

  314. the patch will shrink

  315. and it'll tear away

  316. from the clothing

  317. that has already been washed

  318. and has already shrunk.

  319. What's he saying

  320. when he says all that?

  321. You can't take the gospel

  322. of Jesus Christ

  323. and force it

  324. into old man-made forms

  325. of religion.

  326. That's what he's saying.

  327. God's doing a new thing.

  328. You can't put God in a box.

  329. God does not do patchwork.

  330. He makes seamless transitions

  331. and when one comes to Christ,

  332. the old is gone,

  333. the new has come.

  334. To put it another way,

  335. a new believer

  336. is like a new wineskin

  337. and the Spirit of God

  338. is poured in

  339. through salvation

  340. to that new believer

  341. and God ferments

  342. in our lives.

  343. He also often speaks

  344. of yeast in dough

  345. and the impact of that

  346. and so he ferments

  347. in our lives

  348. and we thank God,

  349. expand for his glory.

  350. Try to fit God

  351. into your ways

  352. and our ways.

  353. Something's got to give.

  354. Listen,

  355. when Christ takes over

  356. your life,

  357. it's because a person

  358. has given in

  359. and allowed God

  360. to stretch him or her

  361. instead of just trying

  362. to piecemeal God

  363. into your lives.

  364. Folks,

  365. don't try to patch Jesus

  366. into your life.

  367. Give him your life.

  368. Don't find some caveat

  369. in your life

  370. that's not going well

  371. and say,

  372. Jesus,

  373. can you handle this for me

  374. and not give him

  375. your entire life.

  376. That's what he's speaking of.

  377. He takes all of our life

  378. and we entrust

  379. all of our life to him.

  380. He makes all things new

  381. and he does it

  382. in a seamless fashion.

  383. Listen,

  384. salvation is not patchwork

  385. over a rough spot

  386. in your life.

  387. That's not what it is.

  388. It's a surrender

  389. of your life to Christ.

  390. It's renewal

  391. of your life

  392. to him.

  393. But not only that,

  394. but he also addresses

  395. the celebration

  396. in the real gospel.

  397. When people

  398. want to know

  399. why he and his disciples

  400. are not fasting,

  401. he states

  402. that it's not time

  403. to fast.

  404. It's time

  405. for celebration.

  406. You fast

  407. in anticipation

  408. and Jesus says,

  409. I'm here.

  410. There's nothing

  411. to anticipate.

  412. I'm before you.

  413. Christ is already

  414. on the scene.

  415. He compares it

  416. to a wedding.

  417. And a wedding

  418. in that day

  419. was a serious thing.

  420. They lasted

  421. about a week.

  422. And as a father

  423. who has a daughter

  424. who's a fiance,

  425. I am thankful today

  426. that our weddings

  427. don't last a week.

  428. Very thankful.

  429. When you were invited

  430. to a wedding,

  431. all other things

  432. were shelved,

  433. by rabbinical law,

  434. one was exempt

  435. from their religious duties

  436. if they were invited

  437. to a wedding.

  438. And you know why

  439. they did that?

  440. Because it would be

  441. inappropriate

  442. to fast

  443. at a wedding.

  444. Don't come in

  445. in your white face.

  446. Don't come in

  447. with your gloom

  448. and doom

  449. into a celebration

  450. of a wedding.

  451. Do nothing

  452. to dampen

  453. the spirit.

  454. This wedding

  455. is not about you.

  456. In our day,

  457. it's all about the bride.

  458. In that day,

  459. it was all about

  460. the bridegroom.

  461. But it's about

  462. the couple

  463. that's getting married.

  464. It's not about you.

  465. And as long as

  466. the bridegroom

  467. is present,

  468. all are to celebrate.

  469. Now in mentioning this,

  470. Christ is saying,

  471. I'm the one

  472. you've been waiting on.

  473. I'm the fulfillment

  474. of everything

  475. that you've looked to.

  476. This is it.

  477. But in the midst

  478. of that,

  479. he also prophesies.

  480. And he says

  481. in Mark 2,

    Mark 2:20

  482. verse 20,

  483. he says,

  484. the days will come

  485. when the bridegroom

  486. is taken away

  487. from them

  488. and then they'll

  489. fast in that day.

  490. That term,

  491. taken away,

  492. speaks of a sudden

  493. and violent removal

  494. as in the garden

  495. when Christ

  496. was arrested

  497. and taken to the cross.

  498. It was appropriate

  499. to mourn over that.

  500. It's also like

  501. the ascension of Christ.

  502. And he could have

  503. been referring

  504. to that as well

  505. when Christ suddenly

  506. was lifted

  507. from the earth

  508. and into heaven.

  509. Now,

  510. it's appropriate

  511. for us to fast

  512. today.

  513. It's appropriate

  514. for us to fast

  515. about the condition

  516. of our country.

  517. It's appropriate

  518. for us to fast

  519. about revival

  520. in our church.

  521. It's appropriate

  522. for us to fast

  523. about renewal

  524. and repentance

  525. in our heart.

  526. Let me tell you

  527. something.

  528. This is not

  529. all there is.

  530. And the Lord

  531. Jesus Christ

  532. is coming back

  533. to take his bride,

  534. the church,

  535. to heaven.

  536. Even so,

  537. Lord Jesus,

  538. quickly come.

  539. I heard

  540. this time last week

  541. that the rapture

  542. was going to take place

  543. on this past

  544. Tuesday and Wednesday.

  545. Did y'all hear that?

  546. Well,

  547. I got news for you.

  548. It didn't.

  549. Okay?

  550. If you're wondering,

  551. it didn't.

  552. And you know what?

  553. If they come out

  554. this week and say

  555. it's going to happen

  556. next week,

  557. don't listen to it

  558. because Jesus said

  559. no man knows

  560. the hour or day

  561. but he tells us

  562. to be ready.

  563. I mean,

  564. listen,

  565. we live in a

  566. fascinating time

  567. because we live

  568. in a time

  569. between the coming

  570. of the Holy Spirit

  571. and Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  572. when now

  573. because through salvation

  574. we can now

  575. be indwelled

  576. with the Spirit

  577. of God

  578. and at the same time

  579. we come before,

  580. we live now

  581. before the coming

  582. of the Lord Jesus

  583. as emphasized

  584. in 1 Thessalonians

    1 Thessalonians 4 chapter mention

  585. chapter 4.

  586. So now

  587. it's a time

  588. to fast

  589. because we need

  590. prayer that is

  591. real

  592. and intense

  593. and means

  594. something to us.

  595. However,

  596. it's also a time

  597. to celebrate

  598. because thank God

  599. Christ is here.

  600. He walks

  601. among us.

  602. He lives

  603. within us.

  604. We need to live

  605. with joy

  606. in our hearts.

  607. We need to smile,

  608. have smiles

  609. on our faces

  610. and if we

  611. have had an

  612. encounter

  613. with Christ,

  614. if we

  615. have been

  616. changed by Christ

  617. and we have

  618. an anticipation

  619. in our eyes

  620. of Christ,

  621. the free

  622. opportunity

  623. to come to Christ

  624. is before us.

  625. I'm thankful

  626. for that.

  627. Romans 10

    Romans 10:13

  628. verse 13

  629. says,

  630. for everyone

  631. who calls

  632. upon the name

  633. of the Lord

  634. will be

  635. saved.

  636. It's not

  637. time for

  638. dead religion.

  639. It's not

  640. time to throw

  641. Jesus in the

  642. mix

  643. or to

  644. sew him

  645. into the

  646. pattern of

  647. your life.

  648. No,

  649. no,

  650. the gospel

  651. of Jesus

  652. Christ

  653. is exclusive.

  654. It's not

  655. mixed in

  656. like patchwork.

  657. It's not

  658. dead.

  659. it's not

  660. gloomy.

  661. It's time

  662. to leave

  663. behind what

  664. needs to

  665. go,

  666. folks.

  667. It's time

  668. for us

  669. to go

  670. with God

  671. with what

  672. he would

  673. have for

  674. us.

  675. Let's quit

  676. being selfish

  677. about the

  678. things that

  679. we're trying

  680. to cling

  681. to and

  682. instead

  683. sell out

  684. and follow

  685. him.

  686. It's time.

  687. The opportunity

  688. is now and

  689. I don't want

  690. us to miss

  691. it.

  692. Let's spend

  693. the rest

  694. of our

  695. days

  696. celebrating

  697. our

  698. Savior

  699. and then

  700. celebrating

  701. with our

  702. Savior

  703. for all

  704. of

  705. eternity.

  706. I got

  707. news for

  708. you.

  709. The greatest

  710. opportunity that

  711. you'll ever

  712. have in your

  713. life

  714. is to give

  715. your heart

  716. and life

  717. to the

  718. Lord Jesus

  719. Christ.

  720. It's the

  721. greatest

  722. opportunity that

  723. we'll ever

  724. have.

  725. And when you

  726. do that,

  727. and I'm not

  728. talking about

  729. God get me

  730. out of a

  731. hole.

  732. God pay

  733. this bill

  734. for me.

  735. God will

  736. you straighten

  737. somebody out

  738. for me.

  739. I'm talking

  740. about lock,

  741. stock,

  742. and barrel

  743. folks.

  744. As

  745. imperfect

  746. as I am

  747. oh God,

  748. I give

  749. myself to

  750. you today.

  751. and I ask

  752. you to

  753. forgive me

  754. for what

  755. I've done

  756. wrong.

  757. And I ask

  758. you to come

  759. into my

  760. life and

  761. to change

  762. me.

  763. Like new

  764. wine in

  765. a fresh

  766. wine skin.

  767. Oh dear

  768. God, will

  769. you implant

  770. your spirit

  771. within me

  772. and help

  773. me to live

  774. this day

  775. forward for

  776. your honor

  777. and glory?

  778. I'll do it

  779. imperfectly,

  780. but from

  781. this day

  782. forward,

  783. I want

  784. to live

  785. for you.

  786. I don't

  787. care if

  788. you've been

  789. in church

  790. all your

  791. life or

  792. you've

  793. never

  794. been

  795. in

  796. church.

  797. I don't

  798. care if

  799. you're a

  800. member of

  801. this church

  802. and in

  803. leadership

  804. or you've

  805. never been

  806. in this

  807. church.

  808. If you've

  809. never surrendered

  810. your life to

  811. the Lord

  812. Jesus Christ,

  813. today's the

  814. day of

  815. salvation.

  816. Just give

  817. up and

  818. give in

  819. faith.

  820. Don't

  821. trust him.

  822. Don't

  823. trust some

  824. frame of

  825. religion.

  826. Don't

  827. trust some

  828. ideology.

  829. Trust Jesus.

  830. He'll

  831. change your

  832. life.

  833. And if he

  834. has, other

  835. folks ought to

  836. know it.

  837. It ought to

  838. show on our

  839. face and we

  840. ought to publicly

  841. profess our

  842. faith.

  843. faith.

  844. And Jesus

  845. by his

  846. example and

  847. by his

  848. commission

  849. tells us to

  850. do that

  851. through

  852. baptism.

  853. That's the

  854. first step of

  855. obedience for

  856. the new

  857. Christian is

  858. to be

  859. baptized.

  860. If you've

  861. never been

  862. baptized as a

  863. believer,

  864. that's a

  865. hindrance in

  866. your life.

  867. You come,

  868. say,

  869. preacher, I

  870. need to be

  871. baptized.

  872. We're not

  873. doing it this

  874. morning, but

  875. we'll line

  876. that up and

  877. we'll publicly

  878. acknowledge your

  879. faith before

  880. others.

  881. Maybe God's

  882. drawing you to

  883. First Baptist

  884. Church.

  885. This is the

  886. place where he'd

  887. have you to

  888. serve.

  889. And if that

  890. be the case,

  891. just obey him,

  892. just trust him.

  893. We'll guide you

  894. through that

  895. process, but

  896. just trust him.

  897. Just be

  898. obedient to what

  899. he tells you

  900. to do.

  901. And then there's

  902. a possibility that

  903. maybe someone

  904. here that says,

  905. you know what?

  906. I've given my

  907. life to Christ,

  908. and I know that

  909. God's calling me to

  910. do more for him.

  911. He's calling me to

  912. serve him in a

  913. ministry capacity.

  914. I dedicate myself

  915. today to surrender

  916. my life to the

  917. call of God upon

  918. my life.

  919. I wouldn't

  920. encourage it of

  921. anybody who don't

  922. have a call upon

  923. their life by the

  924. Lord and clear,

  925. but if it's clear

  926. and you know it,

  927. you'll never be

  928. satisfied doing

  929. anything else

  930. except following

  931. the Lord Jesus.

  932. And I'll be honest

  933. with you, that

  934. goes for anything

  935. and everything that

  936. he's placed upon

  937. your heart and

  938. life today.

  939. If you'll just

  940. trust him, lay it

  941. down here.

  942. Make these steps

  943. a makeshift altar.

  944. Have a pastor pray

  945. for you.

  946. Do it where you'll

  947. stand in a moment.

  948. Whatever.

  949. Whatever it is you

  950. need to give to God.

  951. Let's sell out.

  952. Let's give it all.

  953. I don't need you,

  954. God, to fit into my

  955. framework.

  956. I'm not trying to

  957. patch my life with you.

  958. I give myself to you.

  959. That's the exclusive

  960. gospel of Jesus Christ.

  961. God, to be honest.

  962. And that's what

  963. changes lives.

  964. With every head bowed

  965. and every eye closed,

  966. if God spoke to you

  967. about any of those

  968. matters this morning,

  969. I will never ask you

  970. to do more than what

  971. God tells you to do.

  972. And I'll never,

  973. well, I'll try my best

  974. and I'll never let you

  975. be satisfied with doing

  976. anything less than that.

  977. You just trust God

  978. today.

  979. And do what God

  980. tells you to do.

  981. Heavenly Father,

  982. as we stand and sing

  983. in just a moment,

  984. help us to simply

  985. be obedient to follow

  986. your will and your way

  987. in every way

  988. in all of our lives.

  989. Lead us right now,

  990. oh God, we pray.

  991. In Jesus' name, amen.
