  1. Mark chapter 3, have you ever just felt overwhelmed?

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. We all deal with stressful circumstances that seem bigger than anyone could ever imagine.

  4. And I believe Hebrews chapter 4 verse 15 is reassuring when it talks about our Lord Jesus.

    Hebrews 4:15

  5. For it says,

  6. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses,

  7. but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

  8. Today we look at Mark chapter 3.

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  9. I don't believe Jesus is overwhelmed here, I'll be honest with you.

  10. But he had a lot going on.

  11. He was under a lot of pressure.

  12. He had disciples that he were about to call his apostles that were under a lot of pressure.

  13. However, Jesus, I believe, gives us great guidance in this passage about those times that are overwhelming.

  14. This scripture, this passage is considered a transitional passage by most theologians.

  15. That it's showing a transition between the time of Jesus, when he left Capernaum,

  16. he traveled throughout Judea, preaching.

  17. And as people came, healing.

  18. It was a great movement of God.

  19. As Christ spoke the gospel.

  20. As people's lives were changed.

  21. The crowds grew.

  22. And it was amazing.

  23. And after this passage, what we'll look at next week is when he calls the apostles

  24. to fully, full-time engage with him.

  25. To follow him.

  26. So that he can begin, as A.B. Bruce calls it, the training of the twelve.

  27. And what you'll see after that point is every time Jesus has an interaction with folks,

  28. it's a teaching time for those disciples.

  29. He was teaching them how to share.

  30. He was empowering them with gifts of miracles.

  31. And as well, he was preparing them to establish the church that we see in the book of Acts.

  32. The church that we're benefactors to today.

  33. So it is a transitional time.

  34. But it's a few verses that share the background or the atmosphere

  35. and how it changes in this timeline of the ministry of Christ.

  36. But I believe it's also much more than that.

  37. More than a transition.

  38. It also shows us how Jesus shows us how to make transitions.

  39. He tells us how to deal with the overwhelming.

  40. He tells us how to handle life when it seems like it's pressing in on us.

  41. And he does that not through teaching it, but through showing it.

  42. I want you to see this.

  43. It's in Mark chapter 3, beginning in verse 7.

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  44. And it says this.

  45. When you look at a map and see where people are transitioning to Jesus,

  46. it is quite amazing.

  47. Scripture says they come from Galilee, Judea, Jerusalem,

  48. Idumea, and from beyond the Jordan and from the Tyre and from Sidon.

  49. And they're coming from all over Israel to see Jesus.

  50. From the southern deserts that approach Egypt to the northern coast.

  51. From the heart of the country to the east bank of the Jordan.

  52. And the heart of the country to the east bank of the Jordan.

  53. It is a wide area.

  54. Those that traveled from the south traveled as much as 100 miles by foot to get to Jesus.

  55. The only part of this surrounding area that's not mentioned is Samaria.

  56. Now there's another area on the other side of the Jordan called the Decapolis.

  57. That was 10 Roman-based cities in that area.

  58. But we already know from previous passages that Jesus has ministered in that area.

  59. But Samaria is different.

  60. Mark, throughout the gospel of Mark, never mentions Samaria.

  61. There was a lot of tension with Samaria and the rest of the surrounding region.

  62. And it comes back to what happened years before this.

  63. When the Assyrians besieged Samaria in 722 BC,

  64. they deported many of the Israelites, scattering them.

  65. Then they moved other people into Samaria with the remaining Samaritans.

  66. So you had people all over the world, known world, coming into that area.

  67. And when they came in with those Samaritans,

  68. they were, not only did they come, but they brought all their gods with them,

  69. all their false beliefs with them.

  70. And then they get in there with Samaritans and they marry.

  71. And Solomon teaches us that when you marry people that have other faiths and other religions,

  72. that it can pollute you in your walk with God.

  73. And that's exactly what happened to him because he had a thousand women from all over the world,

  74. as Solomon did.

  75. And he got intoxicated with all of that and got off track.

  76. And he wrote the book of Ecclesiastes to say, I messed up.

  77. I missed it.

  78. And so what happened here in Samaria was this intermarriage and this compromise of faith among believers,

  79. there was a lack of racial purity, which was a big deal among these folk.

  80. And Samaritans were called half-breed dogs.

  81. You didn't go to Samaria.

  82. It was tense for generations afterwards, including the time in which Christ walked in those days.

  83. All of these places are listed, but not Samaria.

  84. And that's probably why.

  85. John records that later that Jesus made a point to go through Samaria.

  86. John 4 says Jesus had to go through Samaria.

  87. You don't have to go through Samaria.

  88. You make your way around it.

  89. That's like saying that you have to go down a New York City dark alley at midnight.

  90. You don't have to.

  91. You can go around a block.

  92. You didn't have to go through Samaria, but Jesus, it says, had to go through Samaria.

  93. And you know what happened when he went through Samaria.

  94. He met a woman at the well.

  95. He changed her life, and she went and told others.

  96. And when he met that woman at the well, he broke racial barriers.

  97. He broke gender barriers.

  98. Every barrier with the gospel, as we should.

  99. However, in this passage, Samaritans are not mentioned here.

  100. So all of these people are coming.

  101. They're rushing to the point of possibly crushing him, as it says in verse 9.

  102. That word crushing there is the same word they use for the wine press when they throw the grapes into the bin and walk on those grapes, squeezing out those juice.

  103. Hopefully they wash their feet before they did that.

  104. If not, there's a little extra twang in that juice.

  105. But they crush those grapes.

  106. And that's the word there that he speaks of when he says that they were crushing him, lest they crush him.

  107. So what do you do when everything starts pressing in on you?

  108. It says in verse 10 that people were pressing.

  109. They came from all over, and the pressures were pressing.

  110. We looked last week at the Pharisees and the Herodians who plotted against Christ.

  111. The expectations of the people were pressing.

  112. People had their wants of what he was supposed to be and what he was supposed to do.

  113. And he had a mission that he was to follow for our salvation.

  114. And all of this is pressing in on Christ.

  115. And I believe when we see how he deals with it, how he deals with pressing matters, that we can better know how we can deal with it.

  116. Because he's our example.

  117. He's the one that not only empowers us, but he's the one that also gives us our example.

  118. So what do you do when you face pressing matters?

  119. Let's learn from the master.

  120. The first thing, when life presses in, withdraw.

  121. When things get tight, Jesus has a plan.

  122. And he had a plan of action then.

  123. He said, have me a boat ready at all times.

  124. Now, I've spoke of this before.

  125. I'll be quick.

  126. But that boat could have been used for amplification process, for amplification on that water.

  127. Because if people start crowding in and they can't hear, he can get out in that boat.

  128. I've been on the Sea of Galilee.

  129. I've been in a boat that was supposed to be like those boats that they were in, much larger than the one that he asked for, which is more like a dinghy.

  130. But the reality is, I've been on those boats and I've seen other tourists on other boats and I've heard their conversations across the water as they've heard our conversations across the water.

  131. Because if you spend much time on the water, you know it's amplification.

  132. But it appears that here, and it was used for that by Christ more times than one in Scripture.

  133. But it appears here that it was there instead for evacuation purposes.

  134. He needed a plan of escape because they were crushing.

  135. We need a plan of escape.

  136. Even a pattern of escape.

  137. And I want you to listen to me this morning.

  138. I want you to hear me out.

  139. Because I don't want you to misunderstand this.

  140. Take it out of context or get half of it.

  141. I don't mean run away.

  142. I don't mean we leave our family.

  143. That's of the devil.

  144. Okay?

  145. I don't mean that at all.

  146. I don't mean that you leave your job.

  147. Unless that's what God's telling you to do.

  148. And I would encourage you to try to secure another one before you leave that one.

  149. Just personal advice, not from Scripture.

  150. But I encourage you to do that.

  151. I don't mean leave your church.

  152. And I sure don't mean neglecting meeting together, as the Hebrew writer said, as some are in the habit of doing.

  153. I don't mean that either.

  154. No.

  155. I mean we better make some time to be set apart.

  156. We need a time of quiet with the Lord.

  157. And we need it often.

  158. And we need it daily.

  159. Mark chapter 1 verse 35 that we looked at a few weeks ago says,

    Mark 1:35

  160. And rising very early in the morning while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place.

  161. And there he prayed.

  162. It was the Lord's pattern to get up early and pray.

  163. Now listen, I'm a morning person.

  164. And I like doing it that way as well.

  165. I'm kind of like my, I had a veterinarian.

  166. He didn't treat me.

  167. He tripped my dog.

  168. But in Mississippi.

  169. And he was primarily a cow doctor.

  170. That's what he did.

  171. He took care of people's cattle for the most part.

  172. But he opened his office from 6 to 8 a.m. in the morning.

  173. And that was it.

  174. If you had a pet and wanted to see him, you bring it from 6 to 8.

  175. And you know what he said?

  176. He said, because that's the only people I like are people that get up between 6 and 8.

  177. That's the only people he dealt with.

  178. I'm a morning person.

  179. And so all the morning people in the crowd look at Mark 1 verse 35 and say,

    Mark 1:35

  180. Yeah, that's exactly how you're supposed to do it.

  181. You're supposed to get up in the dark and spend time with the Lord as Jesus did.

  182. However, at 10 p.m., the night owls are just starting.

  183. And all those folks that got up with the Lord in the dark and with the chickens,

  184. about 10 o'clock are folding up their spiritual wings and getting mighty cranky and getting ungodly.

  185. It's a good thing they did get up in the morning with the Lord.

  186. I realize everybody works on a different schedule.

  187. At night, Dawn looks at me and says,

  188. Why are you going to bed this early?

  189. And in the a.m. I look at her and say, Why aren't you getting up now?

  190. I mean, I don't say it.

  191. I think it.

  192. And you're not going to tell her.

  193. And I'm sure she wasn't listening.

  194. Folks are different.

  195. We're different.

  196. And how it works, how you work that out between you and the Lord is up to you and the Lord.

  197. But I want to make some suggestions to you.

  198. One is spend time with God daily.

  199. You need the spiritual nourishment of withdrawing to be with the Lord.

  200. We live in a wicked world, an evil world, a pressure-filled world, a tempting world.

  201. And you need time with the Lord daily.

  202. I hope and pray that every time you come here,

  203. that you get a blessing from every song that's sang,

  204. that you're uplifted through the prayers,

  205. that you're challenged and encouraged through the Word of God.

  206. I know Brian works hard to make that happen on his part.

  207. I try my best to do everything I can to prepare for this time.

  208. Because I do believe it don't look like a desk anymore.

  209. But it is a sacred desk.

  210. It is the opportunity for us to go before God.

  211. And I take that seriously.

  212. But I got news for you.

  213. This ain't enough.

  214. You got to have time with God.

  215. You need to spend time with God daily.

  216. Secondly, spend time with God first.

  217. And I realize that it's easy for one that gets up early to say that.

  218. However, it only makes sense to spend time with God first.

  219. I mean, in Ephesians chapter 6,

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  220. it explains our spiritual preparation

  221. as if it was a body of armor that we put on,

  222. a spiritual armor that we put on.

  223. When do you put the armor on for battle?

  224. When you're done?

  225. Or before you go into battle?

  226. I spent 25 years every Friday in the fall

  227. speaking to football teams

  228. and telling guys,

  229. taking some battle from the Old Testament

  230. and saying,

  231. you need to go out there

  232. and kill somebody

  233. in the name of Jesus.

  234. I had the opportunity to do that

  235. for high schools,

  236. for colleges on Saturday.

  237. It's a blessing to have that kind of opportunity.

  238. And I always enjoyed it.

  239. But we did that before the game.

  240. You're licking wounds and celebrating afterwards.

  241. But you do that before the game.

  242. If you need directions to go somewhere,

  243. I would advise you get them before you go.

  244. And I don't like anybody telling me where to go.

  245. I don't.

  246. Okay?

  247. So my GPS is silent.

  248. And I pray that the people in my car are silent as well.

  249. But that's another matter.

  250. But my GPS is silent.

  251. I don't need them barking at me about where to turn.

  252. But because of that,

  253. sometimes I'll miss a turn.

  254. I won't look up and see that.

  255. So I'll miss that turn.

  256. And we'll go another way around to do that.

  257. It would have been best

  258. if I knew I was making that turn

  259. before I got to the turn.

  260. Listen, friend.

  261. There's going to be turns in your day today

  262. that you don't know that's coming.

  263. And you need preparation for that

  264. before it comes.

  265. It only makes sense to start your day

  266. with the Lord.

  267. Get your direction daily first.

  268. And then schedule seasons of withdrawal.

  269. You need to pull away.

  270. whether it is for a day

  271. or for an hour,

  272. you need to just sit before the Lord.

  273. I'm thankful

  274. that this past week

  275. through benefactors and sponsors

  276. that work with Billy Graham's Training Center

  277. and through your church's,

  278. this church's generosity

  279. to give us the time to do that.

  280. Dawn and I was able to go

  281. to the Billy Graham Training Center

  282. at the Cove this past week.

  283. Sat under Erwin Lutzer for three days.

  284. Erwin Lutzer,

  285. legendary pastor of Moody Church

  286. for over 30 years.

  287. Pastor emeritus there.

  288. He's written a ton of books

  289. and just sat at his feet

  290. and listened to a good godly man

  291. share the wisdom.

  292. Spend time together

  293. in God's beautiful nature

  294. and just,

  295. just to decompress

  296. and just to take it in

  297. and just to be fed.

  298. I'm telling you,

  299. you need to schedule seasons

  300. of withdrawal.

  301. Now,

  302. sometimes I may do that

  303. on a walk.

  304. I had a health crisis

  305. earlier this year

  306. and it's caused me

  307. to have to build back my strength

  308. and when I was in cardiac rehab,

  309. they had me go down the hallway

  310. and walk for six minutes

  311. at a brisk pace

  312. to measure how far I walked

  313. and they said,

  314. what's your goal

  315. at the end of this time together?

  316. And I said

  317. to do a 10 mile hike

  318. in the mountains

  319. and they said,

  320. well,

  321. we're hoping to get

  322. 100 feet more out of you

  323. and I said,

  324. well,

  325. we're about nine and a half miles

  326. different between me and you.

  327. The reality is

  328. to walk down a trail

  329. by the river

  330. in the mountains

  331. is therapy for me.

  332. It does me a world of good

  333. and it don't take the place

  334. of my time with God

  335. but I'll tell you,

  336. it is a time with God.

  337. For me,

  338. when I see the beauty

  339. of creation

  340. and see what God's made,

  341. it reminds me

  342. of how great our God is.

  343. It's reassuring to me

  344. to see that

  345. and so it's been my prayer

  346. and I'd encourage you

  347. praying with me

  348. that I'd have the opportunity

  349. to be able to do that.

  350. Again,

  351. I think I could

  352. but we'll see

  353. because you need

  354. and it's different

  355. for different folks.

  356. Sometimes,

  357. you may need

  358. a rod and reel

  359. in your hand.

  360. You might need

  361. a tree stand.

  362. You might need

  363. a ride down the road.

  364. Quiet moments

  365. of reflection

  366. with the Lord.

  367. Now,

  368. again,

  369. I told you,

  370. you need to listen

  371. closely this morning.

  372. That does not

  373. take the place

  374. of worship.

  375. That does not

  376. take the place

  377. of corporate worship

  378. on the Lord's Day.

  379. It does not

  380. take the place

  381. of personal worship

  382. daily.

  383. So,

  384. don't tell me

  385. my daily time

  386. with God

  387. is while I'm

  388. driving down

  389. 123.

  390. Don't do that

  391. because you're

  392. full of ungodly

  393. thoughts when you're

  394. driving down

  395. Highway 123

  396. in the morning.

  397. Okay?

  398. I promise you.

  399. So,

  400. don't do that.

  401. It's not the same

  402. but I think

  403. you need both.

  404. It does not

  405. take the place

  406. of worship.

  407. We dedicate

  408. ourselves

  409. to not forsake

  410. the assembly

  411. of the people

  412. of God.

  413. However,

  414. you need time

  415. to withdraw.

  416. And Jesus knew

  417. the disciples

  418. needed that.

  419. They needed time

  420. to pull away.

  421. We do as well.

  422. And you say,

  423. well,

  424. I'm so busy.

  425. Listen,

  426. you are not

  427. too busy

  428. for that.

  429. There's a book

  430. that was written

  431. years ago

  432. called Too Busy

  433. Not to Pray.

  434. The reality is

  435. if your schedule

  436. is so busy,

  437. it's too busy.

  438. And so,

  439. you need to

  440. ask the Lord

  441. in this very hour,

  442. God,

  443. show me

  444. what I need

  445. to do different

  446. in my life

  447. to make time

  448. for you.

  449. We are not

  450. busier than Jesus

  451. nor are we

  452. doing as important

  453. a work

  454. as he did.

  455. When life

  456. presses in,

  457. you need to

  458. withdraw.

  459. Not only that,

  460. but when life

  461. presses in,

  462. you need to

  463. minister.

  464. I want you

  465. to notice

  466. what Jesus

  467. did.

  468. His aim

  469. was to pull

  470. away with

  471. his disciples.

  472. However,

  473. the people

  474. just kept

  475. coming.

  476. They kept

  477. coming.

  478. They were

  479. coming from

  480. all over

  481. and they

  482. were pushy.

  483. They were

  484. so eager

  485. to be healed,

  486. they were

  487. trying to

  488. touch his

  489. garment.

  490. But when

  491. one tries

  492. to touch

  493. and the

  494. other behind

  495. him is

  496. trying to

  497. touch

  498. and the

  499. other behind

  500. him is

  501. trying to

  502. touch,

  503. it became

  504. a mob

  505. mentality,

  506. a somewhat

  507. chaotic

  508. atmosphere to

  509. the point

  510. that he

  511. told him

  512. to have

  513. that boat

  514. behind him

  515. at all

  516. times ready

  517. for evacuation.

  518. He knew

  519. he had to be

  520. able to pull

  521. away from

  522. all of that.

  523. His priority

  524. was to

  525. preach,

  526. to impact

  527. lives for

  528. eternity,

  529. not just for

  530. temporal healing,

  531. and to train

  532. his disciples.

  533. However,

  534. I want you to

  535. notice that he

  536. always took

  537. time to

  538. minister.

  539. He still

  540. meets needs.

  541. needs.

  542. The scribes

  543. are questioning

  544. him and

  545. trying to

  546. set him

  547. up.

  548. The people

  549. are pushing

  550. their way

  551. in.

  552. He felt

  553. the need

  554. to withdraw

  555. with his

  556. disciples,

  557. but even

  558. with that,

  559. he still

  560. ministered.

  561. He never

  562. stopped meeting

  563. needs.

  564. You know

  565. what that

  566. tells me?

  567. That tells

  568. me that we

  569. need to be

  570. careful when

  571. we go through

  572. pressing

  573. matters.

  574. Because when

  575. we go through

  576. pressing

  577. matters,

  578. God will

  579. still put

  580. people in

  581. our path

  582. that need

  583. Jesus.

  584. Let's be

  585. honest,

  586. it's easy

  587. to get

  588. selfish when

  589. things get

  590. pressing.

  591. But the

  592. reality is

  593. God still

  594. puts people

  595. before you

  596. that need

  597. Jesus.

  598. Many have

  599. come here

  600. today,

  601. and you need

  602. God to

  603. intervene in

  604. your life.

  605. There's a

  606. matter in

  607. your life

  608. that you

  609. need God

  610. to intervene

  611. in your

  612. life,

  613. and you

  614. come in

  615. here today

  616. with a

  617. heavy heart.

  618. Maybe it's

  619. the life of

  620. a loved

  621. one.

  622. Your heart

  623. is heavy

  624. for that

  625. person's

  626. life,

  627. or maybe

  628. it's another

  629. pressing

  630. matter in

  631. your life.

  632. You've

  633. come in

  634. here with

  635. that.

  636. I got

  637. news for

  638. you.

  639. You're

  640. not alone

  641. in that.

  642. You're

  643. not the

  644. only one

  645. experiencing

  646. that.

  647. I've

  648. learned

  649. through

  650. long-term

  651. pastorates

  652. that,

  653. and I

  654. hope I'm

  655. able to

  656. be here

  657. a long

  658. time,

  659. but I've

  660. learned

  661. there's a

  662. pain on

  663. every pew.

  664. I said

  665. that one

  666. time to

  667. another

  668. pastor,

  669. and he

  670. said,

  671. yeah,

  672. the key

  673. is to

  674. find out

  675. who they

  676. are.

  677. And I

  678. said,

  679. no,

  680. that's not

  681. what I

  682. meant.

  683. That's

  684. not what

  685. I meant,

  686. you bunch

  687. of

  688. darlings.

  689. It's not

  690. what I

  691. meant at

  692. all.

  693. The reality

  694. is,

  695. until you

  696. sit beside

  697. somebody's

  698. hospital bed,

  699. until you

  700. walk through

  701. a line by

  702. some casket,

  703. you don't

  704. really get the

  705. opportunity

  706. to really

  707. get to

  708. know them.

  709. I wish

  710. y'all

  711. knew you

  712. very well,

  713. all of

  714. you.

  715. But the

  716. reality is,

  717. doing this

  718. for an

  719. hour,

  720. don't allow

  721. that to

  722. happen,

  723. just alone.

  724. That's why I

  725. always encourage

  726. you to be a

  727. part of more

  728. than just

  729. this.

  730. But besides

  731. that,

  732. when calamity

  733. comes,

  734. you can walk

  735. through somebody

  736. and pray with

  737. somebody through

  738. that.

  739. You build a

  740. relationship

  741. with them.

  742. You get to

  743. know them.

  744. That's where

  745. ministry really,

  746. really is.

  747. And so I

  748. want you to

  749. remember something

  750. when you come

  751. in this place

  752. every day.

  753. Instead of

  754. coming in

  755. saying,

  756. what can I

  757. get today?

  758. No matter

  759. how many

  760. pressing

  761. matters are

  762. on your

  763. heart,

  764. I want you

  765. to try to

  766. think,

  767. what can I

  768. give today?

  769. who is

  770. God going

  771. to place

  772. in my

  773. path?

  774. Not in

  775. your way

  776. to get

  777. out for

  778. lunch,

  779. that's not

  780. what I

  781. said,

  782. in your

  783. path.

  784. Sometimes

  785. it's a

  786. call that

  787. comes when

  788. you don't

  789. want to

  790. get a

  791. call.

  792. Sometimes

  793. it's a

  794. visit that

  795. comes when

  796. you don't

  797. want to

  798. get a

  799. visit,

  800. you want

  801. to be

  802. left

  803. alone.

  804. Sometimes

  805. it's an

  806. interruption

  807. when we

  808. don't want

  809. to be

  810. bothered.

  811. But

  812. Jesus was

  813. not looking

  814. to minister,

  815. he was

  816. looking to

  817. withdraw.

  818. However,

  819. when people

  820. needed a

  821. word from

  822. God,

  823. when people

  824. needed a

  825. touch of

  826. healing,

  827. when people

  828. needed a

  829. loving

  830. response,

  831. he was

  832. always ready

  833. to give

  834. it.

  835. I think

  836. about the

  837. time when

  838. the little

  839. girl was

  840. dying.

  841. They

  842. asked him

  843. to come

  844. and on

  845. his way

  846. a woman

  847. came to

  848. him that

  849. had a

  850. issue of

  851. blood.

  852. She was

  853. dying.

  854. And he

  855. paused in

  856. what he

  857. was doing

  858. and said,

  859. who touched

  860. me?

  861. And people

  862. were all

  863. around him

  864. and the

  865. disciples were

  866. like,

  867. everybody's

  868. touching you,

  869. what are you

  870. talking about?

  871. He changed

  872. that lady's

  873. life.

  874. When he

  875. got to

  876. the young

  877. girl who

  878. had died

  879. before he

  880. got there,

  881. they panicked,

  882. they said he

  883. was too late.

  884. He said,

  885. I ain't too

  886. late.

  887. That's my

  888. version.

  889. I ain't too

  890. late.

  891. And that

  892. little girl

  893. came back

  894. to life.

  895. But he

  896. made time.

  897. I want you

  898. to hear me.

  899. He made

  900. time for

  901. something that

  902. wasn't on

  903. the schedule.

  904. So let's

  905. not be

  906. selfish in

  907. the midst

  908. of our

  909. difficulty.

  910. It is so

  911. easy for us

  912. to shelf

  913. ourselves until

  914. everything in

  915. our life is

  916. right.

  917. I'm not

  918. ready to

  919. serve the

  920. Lord right

  921. now because

  922. I've got,

  923. I've got to

  924. get some

  925. things right.

  926. Listen,

  927. everything in

  928. your life is

  929. never going

  930. to be right.

  931. That's why

  932. you need to

  933. depend upon

  934. the Lord.

  935. And that's

  936. not a

  937. criticism.

  938. That's for

  939. all of us

  940. folks.

  941. There's always

  942. going to be a

  943. missing piece

  944. somewhere.

  945. And if we

  946. wait until

  947. everything's

  948. settled before

  949. we get serious

  950. about the

  951. Lord, we'll

  952. never get

  953. serious about

  954. the Lord.

  955. So serve

  956. the Lord

  957. even when

  958. matters are

  959. pressing in.

  960. Understand,

  961. you're not in

  962. this alone.

  963. There's others.

  964. And not only

  965. that, but

  966. this.

  967. When life is

  968. pressing in,

  969. silence the

  970. demons.

  971. Silence the

  972. demons.

  973. Notice there

  974. were unclean

  975. and demonic

  976. spirits that

  977. came near as

  978. well.

  979. And what this

  980. means is that

  981. there were

  982. people filled

  983. with demons,

  984. possessed with

  985. demons that

  986. were coming as

  987. well.

  988. Demons were

  989. speaking through

  990. those people and

  991. they immediately

  992. started acknowledging

  993. who Christ was.

  994. The demons

  995. did.

  996. even the

  997. religious leaders

  998. didn't recognize

  999. him as the

  1000. Lord.

  1001. Matter of fact,

  1002. they were

  1003. trying to

  1004. kill him.

  1005. They were

  1006. already plotting

  1007. against him.

  1008. We're only in

  1009. Mark chapter 3,

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  1010. but they're

  1011. already trying

  1012. to kill him.

  1013. But the

  1014. demons knew

  1015. who he was.

  1016. And when they

  1017. saw him, they

  1018. fell down before

  1019. him.

  1020. The sick

  1021. fell into him,

  1022. pushing to get

  1023. to him.

  1024. The demons

  1025. fell down before

  1026. him in panic

  1027. and submission.

  1028. The demons

  1029. then seem to

  1030. give him

  1031. praise, but he

  1032. shuts them up.

  1033. He silences

  1034. them.

  1035. They praise him,

  1036. but he silences

  1037. them.

  1038. What in the

  1039. world is going

  1040. on with that?

  1041. Why would he

  1042. silence them?

  1043. Well, we get a

  1044. couple of clues

  1045. from Scripture.

1046. One of them is in

  1047. Acts 16, 16

  1048. through 18, when

  1049. Paul and Silas,

  1050. Luke's with them

  1051. because he's

  1052. writing about it,

  1053. and it says Paul

  1054. and Silas is

  1055. ministering, it

  1056. says this,

  1057. as we were

  1058. going to the

  1059. place of prayer,

  1060. we were met

  1061. by a slave

  1062. girl who had

  1063. a spirit of

  1064. divination and

  1065. brought her

  1066. owners much

  1067. gain by fortune

  1068. telling.

  1069. She followed

  1070. Paul and us

  1071. crying out,

  1072. these men are

  1073. servants of the

  1074. most high God

  1075. who proclaim to

  1076. you the way of

  1077. salvation.

  1078. That would

  1079. seem like an

  1080. acclamation.

  1081. And this she

  1082. kept doing for

  1083. many days.

  1084. Paul, having

  1085. been greatly

  1086. annoyed, turned

  1087. and said to the

  1088. spirit, I command

  1089. you in the name

  1090. of Jesus Christ

  1091. to come out of

  1092. her.

  1093. And it came

  1094. out that very

  1095. hour.

  1096. Scripture says

  1097. that Paul got

  1098. annoyed with her,

  1099. not so much her,

  1100. but the demons

  1101. that were in her

  1102. that had taken her

  1103. over.

  1104. Why?

  1105. Because they were

  1106. speaking well of

  1107. him.

  1108. He got annoyed

  1109. and he cast out

  1110. the demon because

  1111. it was hurting his

  1112. witness.

  1113. Because this girl

  1114. was known to be

  1115. able to tell

  1116. fortunes.

  1117. Because she was

  1118. demon possessed,

  1119. and because she was

  1120. demon empowered with

  1121. a supernatural power

  1122. that came from

  1123. demons.

  1124. And she had

  1125. people who owned

  1126. her, who were

  1127. prostituting her out

  1128. for fortune

  1129. telling.

  1130. She was not

  1131. known to walk

  1132. with the Lord.

  1133. People knew what

  1134. her reputation was.

  1135. So by giving them

  1136. praise and sounding

  1137. as if she aligned

  1138. with them, the

  1139. reality is it

  1140. either weakened

  1141. their ministry

  1142. because they were

  1143. aligned with

  1144. somebody who was

  1145. not of God, or

  1146. either she was

  1147. elevating herself.

  1148. But either way,

  1149. it wasn't working.

  1150. Therefore, at least

  1151. partially, to silence

  1152. her, he cast out

  1153. the prophet-making

  1154. demon.

  1155. And the people who

  1156. owned her were not

  1157. happy with that

  1158. because they just

  1159. lost their fortune

  1160. through her.

  1161. not only that,

1162. but I want you to

  1163. notice in Matthew

    Matthew 16:21–23

  1164. chapter 16, verse

  1165. 21 through 23, it

  1166. says this.

  1167. From that time, Jesus

  1168. began to show his

  1169. disciples that he must

  1170. go to Jerusalem and

  1171. suffer many things for

  1172. the elders and the

  1173. chief priests and the

  1174. scribes and be killed

1175. and on the third day be

  1176. raised.

  1177. And Peter took him

  1178. aside and began to

  1179. rebuke him, saying,

1180. Far be it from you,

  1181. Lord, this shall never

  1182. happen to you.

1183. But he turned and said

  1184. to Peter, get behind

  1185. me, Satan.

  1186. You're a hindrance to

  1187. me, for you're not

  1188. setting your mind on

1189. the things of God, but

1190. on the things of man.

  1191. Peter wasn't demon

  1192. possessed.

  1193. He was demon

  1194. influenced.

  1195. Jesus was telling them

1196. about the cross that he

1197. was to bear, and Peter,

1198. I know he was not demon

  1199. possessed because he was

  1200. a follower of Christ.

  1201. And when you follow

  1202. Christ, you become

  1203. indwelled with the Holy

1204. Spirit of God, and the

1205. Holy Spirit of God lives

  1206. within you.

  1207. And demons can't live

  1208. where the Holy Spirit

  1209. is.

  1210. That don't happen.

  1211. So the reality is,

  1212. people who are demon

  1213. possessed need the

  1214. Lord.

  1215. That's what they need.

  1216. So we're not demon

  1217. possessed if we're

  1218. Christians today, but

  1219. we're demon influenced.

1220. Some of the things you

  1221. think, some of the

1222. things you say, some of

1223. the things you do, that's

  1224. demon influenced.

  1225. Christ.

  1226. And what Peter said,

  1227. although he was trying

  1228. to protect Christ, trying

  1229. to encourage Christ, trying

1230. to have his back, and all

1231. that kind of stuff, was

1232. the influence of the evil

  1233. one.

1234. Because Jesus had set his

  1235. face toward Jerusalem, and

1236. before what was before him.

1237. And so he looked at Peter

1238. and said, get behind me,

  1239. Satan, you're a hindrance to

  1240. me.

1241. Satan was using Peter to

1242. try to throw Jesus off

1243. track from his mission of

  1244. the cross.

1245. And then notice that he

1246. says, for you are not

1247. setting your mind on the

1248. things of God, but on the

  1249. things of man.

  1250. That's exactly what the

  1251. devil wants to do.

  1252. That's exactly what he

  1253. wants to do.

1254. He wants us to set our

  1255. minds on ourselves.

1256. He wants us to set our

  1257. mind on our desires.

1258. He wants us to set our

  1259. mind on our troubles.

1260. He wants us to set our

  1261. mind on our worries.

1262. And when life is pressing

  1263. in, that intensifies, by

  1264. the way.

1265. Satan sees the stress in

  1266. our life.

  1267. He sees our weaknesses.

1268. He goes after them to try

1269. to make a fool out of us in

  1270. the midst of it.

1271. And when life is pressing

1272. in, we need to silence

  1273. those demons.

1274. And I'm not speaking of

  1275. demon possession.

  1276. I'm speaking of demonically

  1277. influenced thoughts.

  1278. The evil one's suggestions

  1279. to us.

  1280. He gets aggressive when

  1281. the pressure's on.

1282. So how do we pull away

1283. and withdraw to the Lord

1284. in the midst of our

  1285. struggle?

1286. And how do we continue to

  1287. minister even when it

1288. feels like the world is

  1289. caving in on us?

1290. And how do we silence the

  1291. demonic thoughts?

1292. How do we silence the

  1293. depression?

1294. How do we silence the

  1295. anger?

1296. How do we silence the

  1297. spite?

1298. How do we silence the

  1299. revengeful thoughts?

  1300. The impure thoughts?

  1301. The hopelessness?

1302. How do we silence those

  1303. things?

1304. The Apostle Paul said in

  1305. Colossians 3 verse 2,

    Colossians 3:2

1306. set your mind on things

1307. that are above, not on

  1308. things on earth.

1309. We have to set our minds

1310. on what, not what we can

1311. see and not what we can

1312. figure out and not what we

  1313. can understand.

1314. We've got to set our minds

1315. on him, even in transition,

  1316. especially when the pressure

  1317. is really on.

1318. When the Golden Gate Bridge was

1319. built in the 1930s, it was a

  1320. dangerous work.

1321. The winds would howl through

  1322. the bay.

1323. The currents below were fierce.

1324. The fog was so thick at times

1325. a man couldn't see his hand in

  1326. front of him.

1327. And in the early months of

1328. building that bridge, 11 workers

  1329. fell to their death.

1330. That made the work slow.

1331. Because if you see a guy fall

1332. beside you, you'll slow down

  1333. a little bit.

1334. And it made them afraid.

  1335. It was real.

1336. And then they did something that

1337. nobody had ever done before.

1338. They hung a huge safety net

  1339. underneath that bridge.

  1340. It was expensive.

1341. Some said it was foolish to do

  1342. that.

1343. However, that net ended up

  1344. saving 19 men's lives who fell

1345. into the net instead of into

  1346. the water.

1347. They actually formed a little

1348. club and called it the

1349. Halfway to Hell Club because

1350. they knew without that net they

1351. would have been in trouble.

  1352. And here's what's interesting.

1353. Once that net was in place,

1354. the work didn't get any easier.

1355. The wind still blew like it did

  1356. before.

1357. The fog still came just as thick.

1358. The danger was still there.

1359. However, those men worked with

  1360. greater confidence because they

1361. knew if they fell, they wouldn't

  1362. die.

  1363. You know what?

  1364. Work effort came up.

  1365. The pace picked up.

1366. The bridge was a more successful

1367. project than it had been before

  1368. because of that.

  1369. They had a net

1370. to help them make it through.

  1371. Folks,

  1372. when life is pressing,

  1373. keep on.

1374. Keep on going to Jesus.

1375. Keep on ministering to other

  1376. people.

1377. Keep on silencing the demons by

1378. setting your minds on things

  1379. above.

  1380. Because

  1381. we have a net

  1382. in the Lord Jesus.

  1383. And his grace

  1384. is sufficient

  1385. for whatever matters

  1386. that we may face.

  1387. During the pressing times,

  1388. during the transitions.

1389. Now let me ask you a very

  1390. personal question this morning.

1391. When you look over your life

  1392. and think about

  1393. the decisions you've made

  1394. in your life,

1395. has there ever been a time

1396. in your life when you've

  1397. truly surrendered your life

1398. to the Lord Jesus Christ?

1399. You've asked him to come

  1400. into your life.

1401. You've asked him to forgive you

  1402. of your sins.

1403. You've asked him to change you.

  1404. To save you.

  1405. Friend,

  1406. if that's never happened

  1407. to you,

  1408. there's no net.

  1409. There's no net.

  1410. I wouldn't want to be

  1411. where you are,

  1412. quite honestly.

  1413. If you've never given

  1414. your life to Christ,

  1415. if there's a question

1416. about that in your life,

1417. don't leave this place today

  1418. without nailing that down.

1419. There's no need to do that.

  1420. There's no need

  1421. to let that linger.

1422. Eternity hangs in the balance.

1423. If you have done that,

1424. is it a private matter

1425. that you did with the Lord

  1426. by yourself

1427. or maybe just with a few

  1428. or have you ever

  1429. acknowledged that publicly?

  1430. Have you ever told

  1431. anybody about it?

  1432. Jesus,

  1433. by his example

  1434. and by his commission,

1435. show us that the first step

  1436. of obedience after that

  1437. is baptism.

  1438. If you've never been

  1439. baptized as a believer,

  1440. I encourage you today

1441. to commit to do that.

1442. You can join this church

  1443. by baptism.

  1444. Maybe you're a member

  1445. of this church

1446. and you realize over time

  1447. this has happened

  1448. just recently.

  1449. You realize

  1450. there's never been

1451. a time in your life

  1452. for you to baptize

  1453. as a believer.

  1454. Something happened

1455. to you as a child

  1456. but in reality

1457. you got saved since then.

  1458. You've never been

  1459. baptized as a believer

  1460. and you realize that.

1461. You want to be obedient

  1462. to follow God.

  1463. We're not going to

  1464. baptize you this morning

1465. but we'll line it up

  1466. in the coming days.

  1467. Commit to that today

1468. if you've never done that.

  1469. Maybe God's drawing you

1470. to Pickens First Baptist Church.

  1471. I'm blessed that God's

  1472. doing a wonderful work

  1473. in this church.

1474. God's so good to us.

  1475. He really is.

1476. And if you feel like

  1477. the Lord's leading you

  1478. to do that,

1479. we'll be happy to guide you

  1480. in that process.

1481. We'll be happy to do that.

1482. But then for the rest of us,

  1483. there's pressing matters.

1484. Some of you came in here

1485. with a weight around your neck

  1486. that's weighing you down

  1487. and I encourage you

  1488. to set your mind

  1489. on things above.

1490. Give it over to the Lord.

  1491. That'll take you

  1492. following Him in obedience

  1493. and whatever that means.

  1494. You can do it

  1495. where you'll stand

  1496. in just a moment

  1497. instead of singing.

  1498. Get it right.

1499. You can do it at this altar

  1500. as someone did

1501. in our nine o'clock worship.

1502. I'll be happy to pray with you.

  1503. I'm here.

  1504. But let's just take

  1505. a few moments

  1506. to make sure

  1507. we do everything

  1508. we need to do

1509. to be obedient to God.

  1510. To not let that

  1511. be a pressing matter

  1512. in our life

  1513. that we've been disobedient

1514. when God spoke to us.

  1515. Heavenly Father,

  1516. lead us right now

  1517. to simply do

1518. what you'd have us to do.

  1519. Nothing more

  1520. and nothing less.

  1521. Give us the boldness,

  1522. the courage,

  1523. and the faith

  1524. to just follow you

  1525. and set our minds

  1526. on you, oh God.

  1527. In Jesus' name, amen.
