  1. If you have your Bibles, I want you to turn to Mark chapter 3.

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. Elegant speakers.

  4. You get the best.

  5. Well, not necessarily.

  6. Because the greatest movement, and calling it a movement, is almost sacrilegious because it's so much more.

  7. But the communicating and the managing of the greatest opportunities that have been offered to humankind, or ever will be,

  8. was actually led by a pile of misfits.

  9. That seems so ragtag and obscure that the plan should have been ruined from the start.

  10. From a human perspective.

  11. But it did not fail at all.

  12. It still continues today and will until the world ends with success.

  13. And I'm talking about the opportunity of salvation through Christ.

  14. The sharing of that message.

  15. The leading of those who have committed to it.

  16. The ministry that comes forth from it.

  17. Today, when we look at Mark, we look at the choosing of the apostles.

  18. It is amazing to see who Christ chose.

  19. And I believe it gives us all hope for our own lives, how we see this happen.

  20. It's in Mark chapter 3, beginning in verse 13.

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  21. And it speaks of Christ when it says,

  22. And he went up on the mountain and called to them those whom he desired and they came to him.

  23. And he appointed twelve whom he also named apostles.

  24. That means the sent out ones.

  25. So that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach and have authority to cast out demons.

  26. He appointed the twelve.

  27. And he appointed the twelve.

  28. Simon to whom he gave the name Peter.

  29. James the son of Zebedee.

  30. And John the brother of James.

  31. To whom he gave the name Bonaerges.

  32. That is sons of thunder.

  33. Andrew and Philip.

  34. And Bartholomew.

  35. And Matthew.

  36. And Thomas.

  37. And James the son of Alphaeus.

  38. And Thaddeus.

  39. And Simon the zealot.

  40. And Judas.

  41. Isaaceret.

  42. Who betrayed him.

  43. When you look at this list, you won't find a load of scholars.

  44. They were not great speakers, especially when he met them.

  45. They were not theologians.

  46. There are no rabbis among this group.

  47. There are no scribes among this group.

  48. There are no Pharisees among this group.

  49. There are no Sadducees among this group.

  50. There's not a priest among them.

  51. Or any from a religious establishment.

  52. Or at least in leadership at a religious establishment.

  53. They were too prone to mistakes.

  54. They were too prone to misstatements.

  55. They were too prone to wrong attitudes.

  56. And they were too prone to faith failures.

  57. And he picked 12 of them.

  58. That's an interesting number.

  59. Because that is the same number as the Jewish tribes.

  60. Which are God's people in the Old Testament.

  61. Collected those people and put them into 12 tribes.

  62. And those 12 tribes were to carry out the whole law system.

  63. The sacrificial system.

  64. As a prophecy of when the Messiah would come.

  65. It was all a lead up to the Messiah.

  66. But when the Messiah came, they didn't recognize him.

  67. Now he picks 12 apostles.

  68. The same number.

  69. None of which is of the Judaistic institution as far as in leadership.

  70. It is a judgment.

  71. By picking these 12 versus the 12 tribes of Israel.

  72. It is a judgment upon the leaders of that day.

  73. But it is a repositioning and a realigning of sorts.

  74. But it is much more than that as well.

  75. It is an intense training system.

  76. Of raising up future leaders that will carry out the cause of Christ throughout the world.

  77. And establish the church to thrive until the return of the Lord.

  78. And the reality is, it is estimated that he only had 18 months to do it.

  79. The reality is, as we have looked at Mark chapter 1 and Mark chapter 2 and part of Mark chapter 3.

Mark 1 chapter mention Mark 2 chapter mention Mark 3 chapter mention

  80. Although I warned you when we began that Mark moves quickly.

  81. He is very brief.

  82. But those three chapters and all that great movement of people following Christ.

  83. People's lives changing.

  84. People being healed.

  85. All of that makes up about half of the ministry of Christ already.

  86. Now he has about 18 months before he will go to the cross.

  87. These men were too often self-centered.

  88. They were too often self-promoting.

  89. And yet lacking a faith and lacking spiritual understanding.

  90. And yet they would be immersed into the most intense hands-on seminary experience that has ever been known.

  91. And for the most part, they would come out sold on their cause and effective in carrying out its faith.

  92. Our lives are changed because of the faithfulness of these men.

  93. God loves to choose the weak.

  94. God loves to choose the foolish.

  95. He loves to pick the incomplete to do strong, wise, and wonderful work.

  96. And these guys, I believe, give us all hope of being used by God.

  97. But they also challenge us as we see their commitment to him.

  98. Understand that from a human perspective, the future of the church and the long-term success of the gospel

  99. depended solely on the faithfulness of these men.

  100. There is no plan B.

  101. When Christ is crucified, raises again, is on the earth for a short time before he ascends,

  102. it all lives and falls with them.

  103. It is a huge responsibility to men that, quite honestly, do not seem capable of carrying it out.

  104. And that's what makes the whole story somewhat amazing.

  105. Now, again, Mark writes in a hurry with little detail, but Luke is much more thorough in what he says about everything.

  106. I want you to notice how he describes the process of choosing these men.

  107. He says, in Luke chapter 6, verse 12 through 13,

    Luke 6:12–13

  108. In these days Christ went up to the mountain to pray,

  109. and all night he continued in prayer to God.

  110. And when day came, he called his disciples and chose for them twelve, whom he named apostles.

  111. The Lord toiled all night.

  112. That word there for continued in prayer is a laboring, an intense laboring.

  113. And when the sun came up, he called those men to himself and he chose them.

  114. What were they to do?

  115. Well, notice in the text it tells us what they were to do.

  116. They had three tasks.

  117. One was they were to shadow him.

  118. It says in the text, so that they might be with him.

  119. That's what that's talking about.

  120. Over 150 years ago, A.B. Bruce wrote a book called Training of the Twelve.

  121. I read it about 25 years ago, did a study through it,

  122. and it opened my eyes to see much more and why Christ did what he did when he did it.

  123. And how he many times implemented teaching behind the scenes and even on the spot to his disciples,

  124. almost in everything that he does from this point on until the cross.

  125. Jesus came primarily to be the redemptive hope of all of humanity,

  126. to die on the cross for our salvation.

  127. However, he also came to train these 12 to spread the gospel,

  128. to plant the church of Jesus Christ, to influence the world with the cause until the return of the Lord.

  129. And the best way for them to learn was not to experience it with other spiritual leaders.

  130. It was not in the synagogue.

  131. The best way for them to learn,

  132. the spiritual leaders actually were hunting Jesus down,

  133. trying to kill him.

  134. While he's choosing the apostles,

  135. they're coming up with a way to snuff him out.

  136. It was also not for them to sit under the greatest professors.

  137. Instead, it was to walk with the Lord.

  138. As verse 14 says it, that they might be with him.

  139. By the way, the best way to learn about him is to be with him.

  140. As I thought about that, I couldn't help but think about the song that says,

  141. and he walks with me and he talks with me.

  142. And he tells me I am his own.

  143. And the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known.

  144. Friend, that relationship is how Christ personalizes,

  145. through the power of the Holy Spirit, what he writes in his word.

  146. They were to shadow him.

  147. The second thing, where they were to share the story.

  148. He would teach them how to share.

  149. And then he would send them out to share what they knew,

  150. as many as God would enable them to share with.

  151. As I said, the apostles mean the set out ones.

  152. They are unique.

  153. These, and later Paul, are the only apostles.

  154. I'll be clear about this.

  155. If you go to a church and the preacher wants to be called apostle,

  156. you went to the wrong church, okay?

  157. Leave.

  158. As well, if he wants to be called father.

  159. Matthew 23, 9 says that's not right either.

  160. So that's another sermon.

  161. But anyway, the apostles were set apart by Christ himself.

  162. Ephesians chapter 2, verse 20 says,

    Ephesians 2:20

  163. The church is, quote, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets.

  164. Heaven is described.

  165. Revelation 2, 21, verse 14 says,

  166. And the wall of the city had 12 foundations,

  167. and on them were the 12 names of the 12 apostles of the Lamb.

  168. Another scene in heaven shows 24 elders.

  169. 12 of those elders represent the apostles.

  170. 12 of those elders represent the 12 tribes of Israel.

  171. In other words, in heaven, redemption is complete.

  172. All God's people are together.

  173. Those before Christ that came because of Christ,

  174. and those after Christ are all in Christ.

  175. And my point is that these apostles are unique men.

  176. They're set apart by God,

  177. and they were called primarily to share his story.

  178. The third reason, it says, is they were to silence the demons.

  179. It says that he would give them authority to cast out demons.

  180. Now, I dealt with silencing the demons last week,

  181. and so I'll only touch on it this morning.

  182. Christ came to defeat evil once and for all,

  183. and he did that on Calvary.

  184. It's done, folks.

  185. There are still battles being fought here and there in all of our lives,

  186. but I want you to make no mistake.

  187. The war is won.

  188. Now, the spiritual struggle,

  189. the demonic struggle,

  190. is much more graphic in other parts of the world

  191. than it is in the United States today,

  192. although I would confer that it is intensifying here as well,

  193. and I believe that's got a lot to do with the melting pot of the world coming to us

  194. with all their false religions and all those things.

  195. It opens us up.

  196. Scripture shows that.

  197. However, the same evil is still prevalent,

  198. just not victorious.

  199. The greatest way to silence the evil of the world

  200. is to proclaim through word, deed, and love

  201. the much greater need,

  202. the story of Jesus.

  203. That's the key.

  204. One day, every knee shall bow,

  205. every tongue proclaim that Jesus Christ is Lord.

  206. In the meantime, it's our job to do that,

  207. and the apostles started that process,

  208. and so I want us to look at each of the apostles.

  209. Now, don't panic.

  210. There's 12 of them.

  211. We're only going to look at four today.

  212. All of the synoptic gospels,

  213. that is Matthew, Mark, and Luke,

  214. they write in the same way.

  215. John's a little different,

  216. but all of the synoptics have the apostles listed.

  217. John does not list them.

  218. Luke, who wrote the gospel of Luke,

  219. also wrote the book of Acts,

  220. and it's called the Acts of the Apostles.

  221. He also wrote that book,

  222. and he makes the list again as well,

  223. but I believe that's the list that leaves off Judas,

  224. and we'll get to that later and explain why.

  225. But in all of these lists,

  226. you'll see the men grouped in groups of four.

  227. The first four are always the first four.

  228. They're sometimes in different order,

  229. but they're always the first four.

  230. The second four are always the second four.

  231. The third four are always the last four,

  232. except that one that leaves out one.

  233. And always in the first group

  234. is Peter, Andrew, James, and John.

  235. They were the inner circle around Christ,

  236. and one of them particularly is always listed first.

  237. I call him the outspoken.

  238. The first man that's always mentioned is Simon Peter.

  239. He's called Peter some places.

  240. He's called Simon other places.

  241. His given name was Simon.

  242. Jesus called him Peter because Peter means rock.

  243. Some called him Simon Peter.

  244. Normally when Jesus referred to him as Simon,

  245. he was talking either about his background

  246. or the carnality in his life.

  247. And when he called him Peter,

  248. he was talking about his spiritual side.

  249. It's kind of interesting to see that.

  250. But Jesus would make him a rock,

  251. but he was not a rock when they met by any means.

  252. Peter was the fastest,

  253. most interruptive, loud mouth among them.

  254. He could not help himself.

  255. He said too much too often.

  256. Peter gives us loud mouths a lot of hope

  257. because he speaks more than any of them.

  258. He is rebuked more than any of them.

  259. He is the only one that rebukes Christ among them.

  260. When Jesus spoke of the cross,

  261. Peter corrected him.

  262. When they came to arrest Jesus,

  263. Peter's the one that grabbed the sword

  264. from his own side

  265. and I believe tried to take the head off

  266. of a soldier.

  267. But Peter was a fisherman,

  268. not a swordsman.

  269. So he took an ear off instead.

  270. When Jesus was being accused that night,

  271. it was Peter

  272. who denied him three times.

  273. However,

  274. the spirit is a wonderful thing for the believer

  275. because when Jesus resurrected from the dead,

  276. it was Peter that he reaffirmed.

  277. And when the spirit came in Acts chapter two,

  278. it was Peter that became the voice of the Christian church.

  279. It was Peter that proclaimed that powerful message.

  280. It was Peter that saw thousands of people

  281. come to know the Lord under his ministry in one day.

  282. He was martyred for his faith by crucifixion.

  283. It's not in scripture.

  284. History tells us this.

  285. And it was Peter who said

  286. that he was not worthy to die like Christ.

  287. And instead,

  288. they hung him upside down

  289. on what's believed to be an X-shaped cross.

  290. If you read the book of Acts,

  291. especially in the first third of the book of Acts,

  292. you'll understand

  293. the significance

  294. of why Jesus picked Peter.

  295. Then,

  296. after Peter,

  297. they have what I call the inviter.

  298. Andrew.

  299. Andrew.

  300. Andrew is Peter's brother

  301. and not anything like Peter.

  302. He is the first apostle to be called

  303. and is seen as the least of the top four.

  304. There are places where the other top three

  305. go with Jesus that Andrew don't go.

  306. But,

  307. John the Baptist is the one

  308. that introduced Andrew to Jesus.

  309. And the moment that Andrew was introduced to Jesus,

  310. he brought his brother Peter to Jesus.

  311. Andrew was,

  312. I call him the inviter

  313. because Andrew,

  314. every time we see him,

  315. is about bringing people to Jesus.

  316. It was Andrew who found the boy

  317. with his lunch

  318. and brought him to Jesus

  319. when the 5,000 were fed.

  320. It was Andrew that when Greeks,

  321. which speaks of Gentiles

  322. that were not believers,

  323. when Greeks were asking about Jesus,

  324. it was Andrew

  325. who brought those seekers

  326. to the Lord.

  327. He never sought attention.

  328. He was quiet.

  329. He was unsung.

  330. But he was so very thoughtful of others.

  331. And he was steady.

  332. He was steady in his ministry

  333. just in the background.

  334. We have no knowledge

  335. of him ever preaching.

  336. I'm not saying he didn't.

  337. We have no knowledge of it.

  338. But he's the one

  339. that invited the preacher,

  340. Peter,

  341. to come to Jesus initially.

  342. And quite honestly,

  343. that's made all the difference.

  344. History tells us

  345. that Andrew died on the cross as well

  346. for his faith.

  347. He spent his life

  348. bringing people to Jesus

  349. unapologetically.

  350. He's the inviter.

  351. The third one among them

  352. is the thunderous.

  353. The last two in this list of four

  354. are brothers,

  355. James and John,

  356. the sons of Zebedee.

  357. It is apparent

  358. that Zebedee

  359. was a successful fisherman,

  360. had quite an enterprise,

  361. had hired servants

  362. working under him

  363. in that business.

  364. His wife,

  365. the men's mother,

  366. traveled with the apostles

  367. and traveled with Jesus

  368. and underwrote a lot

  369. of the ministry

  370. because of the prominence

  371. of that family.

  372. They may have even,

  373. James and John,

  374. may have even been cousins

  375. with Jesus.

  376. But there are a lot of Marys

  377. in Scripture

  378. and sometimes

  379. we parallel them together

  380. when they may not need

  381. to be paralleled.

  382. So we're not positive

  383. about that.

  384. But Jesus nicknamed

  385. these brothers

  386. the sons of thunder.

  387. That sounds like

  388. a tag team rassler to me,

  389. a rassler to me,

  390. and that's what they did

  391. on the weekend I guess.

  392. But they came from money,

  393. they came from a household

  394. with hired servants

  395. and they wanted prominence.

  396. Their mother asked

  397. on their behalf

  398. if they could be

  399. in a place of prominence.

  400. It appears that they set

  401. their mother up

  402. to ask on their behalf.

  403. But I call James

  404. the thunderous one

  405. because he was zealous,

  406. he was passionate,

  407. he was thunderous.

  408. I want you to see

  409. what I mean by this.

  410. In Luke chapter 9,

    Luke 9:51

  411. verse 51,

  412. there's an incident

  413. that I want you to see.

  414. It says,

  415. when the days drew near

  416. for him to be taken up.

  417. Now that's talking about

  418. when Jesus

  419. is going to go to heaven.

  420. In other words,

  421. he's going to go to the cross,

  422. he's going to rise again,

  423. and then he's going to live

  424. on the earth for 40 days

  425. and then he's going to ascend.

  426. He's going to be taken up.

  427. He set his face

  428. to go to Jerusalem.

  429. It's the last stage

  430. of his ministry.

  431. There was a preparation stage

  432. of sorts that was in the desert

  433. where he was tempted

  434. and he set his mind

  435. on what his ministry was to be.

  436. There was the beginning

  437. of that ministry along with that.

  438. Then there was the calling

  439. of the apostles.

  440. And then,

  441. at this point,

  442. he sets his face

  443. toward Jerusalem.

  444. And he sent messengers

  445. ahead of him

  446. who went and entered

  447. a village of the Samaritans

  448. to make preparations for him.

  449. But the people

  450. did not receive him

  451. because his face

  452. was set toward Jerusalem.

  453. Now I talked about last week,

  454. I talked about the Samaritans,

  455. talked about the history of it,

  456. the difficulty of that region.

  457. People didn't like Samaritans.

  458. And apparently,

  459. they didn't like Jesus either.

  460. And it says,

  461. and when his disciples,

  462. James and John,

  463. saw it,

  464. they said,

  465. Lord,

  466. do you want us to tell fire

  467. to come down from heaven

  468. and consume them?

  469. They weren't going to put up with it.

  470. But he turned and rebuked them.

  471. Man, what a statement

  472. that they made.

  473. What a statement.

  474. Think about what they said.

  475. Because in reality,

  476. who were they

  477. to be able to call down fire?

  478. Now I'll tell you

  479. what that comes from.

  480. It comes from

  481. they knew the word.

  482. They had been in the synagogue,

  483. apparently.

  484. And they knew about Elijah.

  485. And Elijah was a hero to many.

  486. And Elijah could call down fire.

  487. And so man,

  488. they're followers of God.

  489. Why don't we just call down fire

  490. and burn up these Samaritans,

  491. is what they were saying.

  492. He turned and rebuked them

  493. and they went on

  494. to another village.

  495. When you see that,

  496. can't you see the Sons of Thunder

  497. in wrestling attire?

  498. I mean,

  499. I can see that in my head,

  500. but anyway.

  501. But I grew up on Saturdays

  502. watching NAA wrestling.

  503. But these men

  504. didn't want to play games.

  505. They were a little off.

  506. Do you want us

  507. to call down fire?

  508. Listen.

  509. Actually,

  510. Philip

  511. would later go

  512. to Samaria

  513. and would win

  514. possibly some of

  515. these same people

  516. to the Lord.

  517. That's why God

  518. didn't call a fire

  519. upon them.

  520. A different kind of fire

  521. came upon them.

  522. The fire of the Holy Spirit

  523. of God.

  524. But these men

  525. were zealous.

  526. They were with Jesus

  527. on the Mount

  528. of Transfiguration.

  529. They were the ones

  530. that went a little further

  531. in the garden

  532. with Jesus

  533. as they prayed.

  534. They, like Peter,

  535. had a fire

  536. in their belly.

  537. The passion of James

  538. was also for the gospel

  539. as well.

  540. James is the first

  541. to be martyred

  542. among them

  543. for the faith.

  544. Acts chapter 12,

    Acts 12:2

  545. verse 2

  546. talks about

  547. his death.

  548. And Herod

  549. had him killed

  550. with the sword.

  551. That almost always

  552. means that he was

  553. beheaded

  554. for his thunderous

  555. stand

  556. for the gospel.

  557. He was the thunderous.

  558. His brother,

  559. the last one

  560. we're going to look at

  561. this morning

  562. is the passionate.

  563. John was a lot

  564. like his brother.

  565. He was passionate.

  566. He was cut and dry

  567. about everything.

  568. He had no gray areas.

  569. And later

  570. he wrote about it.

  571. This is the John

  572. that wrote

  573. the gospel of John.

  574. This is the John

  575. that wrote

  576. the three letters

  577. from John.

  578. I call it

  579. the big John

  580. and three little Johns.

  581. This is the John

  582. that wrote

  583. the book of Revelation

  584. on the Isle of Patmos.

  585. This is the John

  586. that wrote

  587. more of the New Testament

  588. than anybody

  589. but the Apostle Paul.

  590. And he is a man

  591. of no compromise.

  592. Read what he wrote.

  593. It's light

  594. against darkness.

  595. It's life

  596. against death.

  597. It's kingdom

  598. of God

  599. against the evil empire.

  600. It's receive Christ

  601. or reject Christ.

  602. It's bear fruit

  603. or be fruitless.

  604. It's be obedient

  605. to God

  606. or be disobedient

  607. to God.

  608. It's love God

  609. or hate God.

  610. When you read

  611. John,

  612. especially his three letters,

  613. John's works

  614. will unsettle you

  615. or at least it should.

  616. You got to go read Paul too

  617. and he'll comfort you.

  618. But God

  619. took that

  620. call down fire

  621. among them

  622. and he mellowed

  623. that in John.

  624. And he made John

  625. the Apostle of love.

  626. John became

  627. a tender hearted

  628. loving Apostle

  629. that lived,

  630. he's the only Apostle

  631. that lived

  632. into his old age.

  633. in his writing

  634. he mentions truth

  635. 45 times.

  636. He was passionate

  637. about the truth.

  638. But listen to this.

  639. He mentioned witness

  640. 70 times.

  641. He wrote

  642. so that people

  643. would know Christ.

  644. He says

  645. in the Gospel of John

  646. at the end of it

  647. as well as

  648. in 1 John

  649. I write

  650. these things

  651. to you

  652. that you may

  653. believe

  654. that Jesus

  655. is life

  656. and you may

  657. have life

  658. in his name.

  659. It's the reason

  660. he wrote them.

  661. But he mentions

  662. love

  663. more than

  664. either one of those.

  665. He mentions

  666. love

  667. 80 times.

  668. He calls

  669. those that he

  670. writes to

  671. little children.

  672. He never

  673. mentions his

  674. own name

  675. in the Gospel.

  676. He always

  677. put the

  678. disciple

  679. whom Jesus

  680. loved.

  681. You know why

  682. he put that?

  683. Because he never

  684. got over

  685. Christ's love

  686. for him.

  687. And we

  688. better not

  689. either.

  690. It is believed

  691. that after Paul

  692. started the church

  693. in Ephesus

  694. that John

  695. went and

  696. pastored

  697. that church

  698. until the

  699. Roman emperor

  700. Domitian

  701. put him on

  702. the island

  703. of Patmos

  704. in exile

  705. where he

  706. lived in a

  707. cave

  708. slept

  709. on a

  710. pillow of

  711. rock

  712. and saw

  713. a great

  714. vision from

  715. the Lord

  716. that led

  717. to him

  718. writing about

  719. it in

  720. Revelation.

  721. In his

  722. latter days

  723. historians

  724. tell us

  725. that he

  726. had to be

  727. carried into

  728. church

  729. in his

  730. old age

  731. and that

  732. he was

  733. constantly

  734. saying

  735. my little

  736. children

  737. love one

  738. another.

  739. when it

  740. came time

  741. to carry

  742. out the

  743. greatest

  744. task

  745. that

  746. humankind

  747. will ever

  748. see

  749. Jesus chose

  750. the common

  751. Jesus chose

  752. the ordinary

  753. and he

  754. empowered

  755. them with

  756. the spirit

  757. of God

  758. and he

  759. made them

  760. extraordinary.

  761. when I

  762. think about

  763. that I

  764. think about

  765. what in

  766. the world

  767. is holding

  768. us back

  769. from being

  770. all that

  771. God would

  772. have us

  773. to be.

  774. What's

  775. holding me

  776. back?

  777. What's

  778. holding you

  779. back?

  780. What's

  781. being everything

  782. God would

  783. have you to

  784. be?

  785. God wants

  786. people who

  787. will speak

  788. boldly for

  789. him.

  790. God wants

  791. people who

  792. are quiet

  793. who don't

  794. say much

  795. but who are

  796. willing to

  797. walk up to

  798. others and

  799. quietly invite

  800. them to

  801. come to

  802. Jesus.

  803. He even

  804. wants the

  805. thunderous

  806. those that

  807. you see

  808. coming

  809. those that

  810. will step

  811. up when

  812. needed.

  813. He wants

  814. the

  815. passionate.

  816. The folks

  817. that love

  818. folks like

  819. the Lord

  820. Jesus.

  821. He wants

  822. you and

  823. he wants

  824. me.

  825. It's not

  826. our job to

  827. do the job

  828. of the

  829. apostles.

  830. It's our

  831. job to do

  832. the job that

  833. he set before

  834. us.

  835. And he has

  836. a way of

  837. taking our

  838. temperament and

  839. our strengths

  840. and our

  841. weaknesses and

  842. molding them

  843. and making

  844. them like

  845. clay on a

  846. potter's

  847. wheel and

  848. by the

  849. spirit of

  850. God and

  851. the power

  852. of the

  853. spirit of

  854. God to

  855. be effective

  856. to reach

  857. people and

  858. encourage

  859. people for

  860. the Lord

  861. Jesus Christ.

  862. What is it

  863. God would

  864. have you to

  865. do?

  866. maybe you're

  867. here this

  868. morning and

  869. you've never

  870. given your

  871. heart and

  872. life to the

  873. Lord Jesus.

  874. There's not

  875. a relationship

  876. there.

  877. You don't have

  878. a problem with

  879. him necessarily.

  880. You just never

  881. have surrendered

  882. your life to

  883. him.

  884. Never have

  885. committed your

  886. life to

  887. him.

  888. I want you to

  889. know if you've

  890. never done that

  891. today's the day

  892. to do that.

  893. There's no need

  894. to put that

  895. off.

  896. If you'll ask

  897. him to forgive

  898. you of your

  899. sins and

  900. you'll acknowledge

  901. that you've done

  902. wrong in your

  903. life and ask

  904. him to come

  905. into your life

  906. and to change

  907. you,

  908. he will empower you with the spirit of God

  909. and he'll take those natural things within you

  910. and he'll tune them up by the spirit of God

  911. and use them in his might and power.

  912. Maybe you're here this morning

  913. and you have done that privately

  914. but you've never acknowledged that through baptism.

  915. We plan to do that in a couple, three weeks

  916. and I encourage you if you've never been baptized

  917. to obey God in that.

  918. By his commission and by his example,

  919. Christ told us,

  920. that was the first step that we're to take

  921. when we give our life to Christ.

  922. Or maybe God's drawing you to Pickens First Baptist Church.

  923. That's your step of obedience.

  924. That's what you're to do to obey God

  925. and if that be the case,

  926. we'd love to welcome you.

  927. We'd be happy to guide you in that

  928. or maybe it's something else.

  929. I have no idea what it is.

  930. I don't ever pretend to know

  931. what God's speaking to you about

  932. but I'll tell you this,

  933. by the power of God,

  934. he'll make each one of us effective

  935. to do the ministry that he's called us to do.

  936. And if you're a child of God,

  937. he's called you to do ministry

  938. in some form or fashion.

  939. whether it be quiet,

  940. whether it be loud,

  941. whether it be speaking,

  942. whether it be nudging,

  943. whatever it is,

  944. the apostles show us

  945. God can use any of us

  946. and will use any of us

  947. and he plans to use all of us.

  948. So let's just be obedient

  949. and follow him today.

  950. Just say yes

  951. to whatever God would have for you.

  952. Let's pray together.

  953. Lord Jesus, I love you.

  954. Thank you Lord for your love for us

  955. and I ask dear God

  956. that you'll help us to learn

  957. from the apostles,

  958. the great teachers that they are

  959. by their example, dear God.

  960. Help us to be obedient

  961. to follow you as you lead us.

  962. In Jesus' precious name.

  963. Amen.
