  1. If you will, to Colossians, Colossians chapter one, we're going to be focused on verses 9 through 14.

  2. ! This is a tremendous prayer that we see recorded in Scripture that Paul has written.

  3. Have you ever come across Scriptures at times when you're reading through the Bible that just grab your attention?

  4. They just kind of stand off the page to you and for some reason just kind of captivate you.

  5. Maybe it's a moment in time, maybe a place you are in your life.

  6. Maybe it's something you've been praying and seeking for direction or guidance.

  7. And there's a Scripture that God uses just to speak to you through that passage.

  8. Well, for some time I've been really interested in the prayers of Scripture and especially in the New Testament.

  9. And not to discount the prayers of Jesus or John, but Paul, the prayers of Paul really get my attention.

  10. And Paul has a tremendous pastoral heart that we see throughout his letters.

  11. And often we see Scriptures that he has written where he is praying not for himself as much as for those that are in the churches where he has started.

  12. And he has moved on to plant another church somewhere.

  13. But he continues to pray for the spiritual growth of those that he's left behind.

  14. But he's left in the hands of someone else to pastor.

  15. However, in this passage in Colossians, the believers here are someone Paul has actually never even met.

  16. He did not start the church here in Colossae.

  17. He has actually only heard about the believers here.

  18. He's heard of their faith in the Lord.

  19. He's heard of their love for Christ and for one another.

  20. And he's only heard of their hope in Christ.

  21. But he still has that pastoral hunger and heart for them and their continued spiritual growth and walking with the Lord.

  22. And so he records this letter to them.

  23. And he records this prayer that he says he continues to pray without ending.

  24. He has not stopped praying for them.

  25. If you ever wonder how to pray for your loved ones,

  26. you ever wonder how to pray for a spouse or a child, a grandchild,

  27. or maybe even yourself, sometimes you don't even know how to pray for yourself in your spiritual journey

  28. and your walk with the Lord.

  29. And you wonder, I don't even know how to pray other than God be with me, God help me.

  30. So many times our prayer lives are, God do this for me, or God help me with this, or God do that.

  31. But this is an amazing passage here where we look right into the heart of Paul

  32. and that pastoral heart of his where he gives us a glimpse there to show us how we can pray for ourselves,

  33. maybe a spouse, maybe a child or a grandchild or other loved ones in our lives.

  34. So let's look together at the scriptures here at Colossians chapter 1 verses 9 through 14.

    Colossians 1:9–14

  35. And so from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you,

  36. asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will and all spiritual wisdom and understanding

  37. so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him,

  38. bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God,

  39. being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might,

  40. for all endurance and patience with joy,

  41. giving thanks to the Father who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.

  42. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son

  43. in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

  44. You know, as I said, have you ever wondered just how to pray for a loved one?

  45. Pray for a child.

  46. Pray for a grandchild.

  47. Or pray for your church family.

  48. Pray for your pastors.

  49. This is a tremendous passage of scripture here, a prayer of Paul of where to begin

  50. and to where to incorporate or adopt this prayer into your own prayer life

  51. to pray for your loved ones.

  52. So let's begin to dissect this a little bit.

  53. One of the weaknesses of being an associate pastor and only getting to pinch hit occasionally

  54. is I don't have enough time to really dive into this and dissect it to the full extent.

  55. I need multiple weeks to really deal with this.

  56. So we're going to only be able to hit some of the highlights of this,

  57. but I'm going to do my best.

  58. And I would encourage you to go home and read this and study this

  59. and really learn more than what we'll be able to do today.

  60. Because again, this is an amazing passage and it will take your prayer life to a new level

  61. when you're praying for others.

  62. But let's look again at verse 9.

  63. That you would be filled with the knowledge of his will

  64. in all spiritual wisdom and understanding.

  65. If that's all you prayed for your loved ones,

  66. that is powerful.

  67. That is powerful.

  68. Do you just sit there and soak that in for a moment?

  69. Pray.

  70. Maybe you add the name of who you're praying for right now.

  71. Your spouse, your children, your grandchildren.

  72. I wish you'd pray it for me.

  73. That Jeff would be filled with the knowledge of God's will

  74. in all spiritual wisdom and understanding.

  75. This isn't just a head knowledge.

  76. It's not about reading the Bible and just accumulating facts.

  77. It's not about being able to just quote scripture

  78. and knowing all the ins and outs of when a letter was written

  79. or when it was dated and the history behind the letter.

  80. It's not about all of that.

  81. The word filled means to be completely controlled by something.

  82. To be saturated.

  83. Paul wants them to be so full of the knowledge of God's will

  84. that it shapes how they think.

  85. He wants them to be so saturated with understanding of God's will

  86. that it changes the way they speak and how they live.

  87. Too many Christians today settle for knowing about God

  88. and not knowing God.

  89. We know facts about God, but we don't know God.

  90. Do you realize when you sit down,

  91. and I might get to preaching here in a second,

  92. but Brian's got me trapped in here where he's got me caged in,

  93. so I may not get to walk as much as I like.

  94. When you sit down with the word of God,

  95. you're not just reading it to gain factual information.

  96. Do you realize you're sitting down with God?

  97. You're sitting down, spending time,

  98. fellowshipping with God to know him,

  99. to fellowship with him, interacting with him,

  100. allowing him to speak to you,

  101. not just gaining factual information and knowledge,

  102. but we are to sit down with him

  103. and let the word saturate us,

  104. let it fill us, let it impact us,

  105. and that just doesn't happen by us reading it quickly.

  106. It's great to have a reading plan,

  107. but don't just have a reading plan

  108. so that you can read it quickly and check it off

  109. and move on about your day.

  110. Read through the scriptures slowly.

  111. Set aside time that you can slowly move through the scriptures

  112. and let that speak to you.

  113. Hebrews says the word of God is living and active

  114. and sharper than any double-edged sword.

  115. Allow the word of God to come alive in you.

  116. Allow it to saturate your inner being

  117. and speak to you.

  118. Don't just read it and say,

  119. okay, it's checked off and move about your day.

  120. Let it saturate you and change the way you think.

  121. Change the way you speak.

  122. Change the way you live.

  123. And you know what?

  124. Spiritual wisdom isn't going to be something

  125. that just falls in your lap.

  126. Spiritual wisdom isn't going to be something

  127. that just pops in your head one day.

  128. You know, obviously it begins with the Holy Spirit

  129. opening our eyes

  130. and the Holy Spirit giving us that spiritual wisdom.

  131. But you know what?

  132. It really begins with us wanting spiritual wisdom.

  133. It begins by you wanting that.

  134. Do you want spiritual wisdom?

  135. If you do,

  136. then that means we set aside time

  137. to spend with God

  138. and we seek God.

  139. The scriptures tell us continuously,

  140. seek wisdom.

  141. Pursue it like a man would seek treasure.

  142. I'll never forget my New Testament professor in seminary.

  143. He asked us,

  144. do you hunger for God

  145. the way a hungry man hungers for food?

  146. Let me challenge you.

  147. Go three days without eating food at all

  148. and tell me how hungry you are for food.

  149. And then ask yourself,

  150. are you that hungry for God?

  151. Are we that hungry for God today in our lives?

  152. If we are,

  153. we're going to set time aside

  154. to seek God,

  155. to pursue God,

  156. to spend time in His Word

  157. and to slowly process it

  158. and let it saturate us

  159. and impact the way we think,

  160. the way we speak,

  161. the way we live.

  162. It's going to impact our relationships

  163. that we spend

  164. and it's going to change the way we live.

  165. It's going to change our priorities

  166. in life.

  167. And having this type of knowledge

  168. and understanding

  169. leads to a worthy walk

  170. with the Lord.

  171. He then transitions into chapter,

  172. or verse 10,

  173. but I want to go back

  174. and read verse 9

  175. to show you

  176. how He transitions

  177. into verse 10.

  178. Look with me,

  179. if you will,

  180. verse 9 and 10.

  181. So,

  182. asking that you may be filled

  183. with the knowledge of His will

  184. in all spiritual wisdom

  185. and understanding.

  186. Now,

  187. catch this

  188. in starting with verse 10.

  189. So,

  190. as to,

  191. so when you have

  192. that type of spiritual wisdom

  193. and understanding,

  194. so as to walk

  195. in a manner

  196. worthy of the Lord,

  197. fully pleasing to Him.

  198. When it says,

  199. so as to walk

  200. in a manner

  201. worthy,

  202. pleasing to Him,

  203. it's talking about

  204. the way you live.

  205. When you have

  206. that type of knowledge

  207. and spiritual wisdom

  208. and understanding,

  209. then you will live

  210. in such a way

  211. that will bring,

  212. bring honor and glory

  213. to the Lord.

  214. It will be a life

  215. that reflects

  216. the character of God

  217. within you.

  218. You can't sit down

  219. and spend time

  220. with God

  221. in His Word

  222. and let the Word

  223. of God

  224. saturate your being

  225. without it changing

  226. who you are

  227. and molding

  228. and shaping you

  229. in more and more

  230. like the life

  231. of Jesus Christ.

  232. And it means

  233. our conduct,

  234. our priorities,

  235. our thinking,

  236. everything is changed.

  237. Romans 12, 1 and 2

  238. says,

  239. present your bodies

  240. as a living sacrifice,

  241. holy and acceptable

  242. to God

  243. which is your

  244. spiritual worship.

  245. Do not be conformed

  246. to this world

  247. but be transformed

  248. by the renewal

  249. of your mind.

  250. You know,

  251. when we're seeking

  252. the Lord,

  253. when we're pursuing God,

  254. when we're

  255. in the Word of God,

  256. we won't be conformed

  257. to this world

  258. but we will be

  259. transformed

  260. by the renewing

  261. of our mind

  262. through the Word

  263. of God.

  264. And it'll change

  265. our choices,

  266. it'll change

  267. our priorities,

  268. it'll change

  269. our relationships,

  270. it'll change us.

  271. We will be set apart

  272. and different

  273. from the world

  274. and when you live

  275. your life in the world,

  276. people will be able

  277. to look at you

  278. and see a difference.

  279. Some people are going

  280. to think you're weird

  281. and crazy,

  282. that's okay

  283. because they're going

  284. to know

  285. that you're weird

  286. and crazy

  287. and different

  288. and you're changed

  289. because of Jesus Christ.

  290. And Paul gives us

  291. a couple examples here

  292. that reflect

  293. a Christian life

  294. that is being lived

  295. in a worthy manner

  296. that pleases the Lord.

  297. He says,

  298. bearing fruit

  299. in every good work.

  300. You know,

  301. fruit is a common metaphor

  302. for the visible results

  303. of an inward

  304. spiritual life.

  305. You know,

  306. the imagery here

  307. is obviously

  308. an agricultural metaphor.

  309. When a plant

  310. is healthy

  311. and well nourished,

  312. it's obviously

  313. going to produce fruit.

  314. Likewise,

  315. you know,

  316. a believer

  317. who is rooted

  318. in Christ

  319. and filled

  320. with the Spirit

  321. will naturally

  322. produce good works

  323. that reflects

  324. the character

  325. of Christ

  326. within our lives.

  327. You know,

  328. Jesus stated

  329. in John 15, 5,

  330. I am the vine

  331. and you are the branches.

  332. If a man remains

  333. in me

  334. and I in him,

  335. he will bear

  336. much fruit.

  337. If we are spending

  338. time with God,

  339. if we are remaining

  340. in him,

  341. allowing his word

  342. to remain in us,

  343. we will bear fruit.

  344. This isn't just

  345. the fruit of the Spirit

  346. because the fruit

  347. of the Holy Spirit

  348. will produce

  349. the fruit of the Spirit

  350. within us,

  351. but then our lives

  352. will produce fruit

  353. for the kingdom

  354. of God.

  355. There's many

  356. different ways

  357. that scriptures

  358. define fruit

  359. and that's one

  360. of those things

  361. we don't have time

  362. to talk about today,

  363. but it says

  364. in every good work

  365. we will produce fruit

  366. in every good work.

  367. This phrase means

  368. fruitfulness

  369. should not be limited

  370. just to one area

  371. of our life,

  372. not just here at church

  373. and then we go out

  374. and live a different way,

  375. completely different,

  376. but it touches

  377. every part of our lives,

  378. whether you're at work,

  379. whether you're at school,

  380. whether you're

  381. in your recreational time

  382. or your community,

  383. wherever,

  384. whatever you're doing,

  385. that you will produce fruit

  386. for the kingdom of God

  387. in every component

  388. and every aspect

  389. of your life.

  390. You can't compartmentalize

  391. your life

  392. and only have

  393. certain aspects of it

  394. that are being lived out

  395. for the Lord

  396. and then you live

  397. a different way

  398. in a different time.

  399. Every component

  400. of your life

  401. will produce fruit

  402. for the kingdom of God

  403. in all that you do.

  404. And then verse 11,

  405. being strengthened

  406. with all power

  407. according to

  408. His glorious might,

  409. for all endurance

  410. and patience

  411. with joy.

  412. You know,

  413. this is one of the most

  414. practical parts

  415. of the prayer here

  416. because most of us,

  417. really every one of us,

  418. all believers,

  419. we're going to face

  420. seasons of hardship,

  421. we're going to face

  422. seasons of discouragement

  423. and fatigue,

  424. loneliness,

  425. temptation,

  426. seasons of busyness

  427. when we're running

  428. on empty

  429. and we feel like

  430. giving up

  431. and quitting.

  432. We just don't know

  433. if we can keep going.

  434. And Paul doesn't pray

  435. for the believers

  436. at Colossae

  437. that they would have

  438. all those difficulties

  439. removed.

  440. What does he pray for?

  441. He prays for them

  442. to have endurance

  443. to continue.

  444. He also prays

  445. for them

  446. to have patience.

  447. Now,

  448. patience here,

  449. we often think

  450. of patience

  451. as putting up

  452. with other people.

  453. That may or may not

  454. be what he means here.

  455. Patience

  456. probably

  457. is more like

  458. patience

  459. to wait upon

  460. God

  461. to unfold

  462. His plan

  463. and His will

  464. and accomplish

  465. what He's doing

  466. in your life.

  467. Because sometimes

  468. we have to wait

  469. for God

  470. to answer prayers.

  471. We have to wait

  472. for God

  473. to accomplish

  474. what He's doing

  475. through us.

  476. We have to be patient

  477. and trust

  478. that God's will

  479. is best.

  480. But have endurance

  481. to run the race

  482. and finish the race.

  483. Now,

  484. I know this next one

  485. is speaking to me.

  486. Maybe you too,

  487. amen?

  488. with what?

  489. It sounds like

  490. a joyful group

  491. here today.

  492. With

  493. joy.

  494. With joy.

  495. You know,

  496. all of us,

  497. every one of us

  498. can grit our teeth

  499. and bear it.

  500. I'm waiting for Jesus

  501. to come back

  502. and I'm gonna like it.

  503. But He's saying

  504. do it with joy.

  505. The kind of joy

  506. that Paul and Silas

  507. had when they were

  508. whipped and beaten

  509. and thrown in jail

  510. and they sang praises

  511. to God,

  512. thank you that we

  513. were worthy.

  514. Thank you that we

  515. were worthy

  516. to suffer.

  517. Now,

  518. is that natural?

  519. That isn't about

  520. circumstances.

  521. Our lives are not

  522. gonna always be

  523. hunky-dory,

  524. good and wonderful.

  525. We're gonna go

  526. through hard times.

  527. We're gonna go

  528. through suffering.

  529. We're gonna go

  530. through difficulties.

  531. You know why?

  532. Sometimes God puts us

  533. through those things.

  534. Sometimes God puts us

  535. through them to get rid

  536. of sin in our life.

  537. Sometimes He's

  538. building character.

  539. Sometimes He's

  540. preparing us

  541. for future work.

  542. But He's saying

  543. do it with joy.

  544. That joy

  545. can only come

  546. through the power

  547. of the Holy Spirit

  548. living within us.

  549. What's one of the

  550. fruits of the Spirit?

  551. Love,

  552. peace,

  553. joy.

  554. as we walk

  555. with the Lord,

  556. as we spend time

  557. in the Word,

  558. as we get our eyes

  559. off this world

  560. and keep our eyes

  561. on the Lord.

  562. Every time I go

  563. through periods

  564. in my life

  565. when I'm discouraged,

  566. I'm depressed,

  567. or I'm struggling,

  568. I notice that I've

  569. neglected my time

  570. with the Lord.

  571. Every time.

  572. Without exception.

  573. But when we're

  574. getting up

  575. or staying up late,

  576. whenever your time

  577. is to spend time

  578. with the Lord,

  579. turn the TV off.

  580. Quit watching

  581. Clemson trying

  582. to lose football games

  583. and South Carolina

  584. giving up

  585. massive leads

  586. of football games.

  587. Quit watching

  588. that kind of stuff.

  589. And spend time

  590. with the Lord.

  591. Spend time

  592. with God.

  593. Saturate your mind.

  594. Saturate your heart.

  595. Saturate your life

  596. with Jesus Christ

  597. and stay focused

  598. on Him

  599. and His will

  600. for your lives.

  601. What God

  602. wants to do

  603. with you.

  604. What is it

  605. that God

  606. wants to do

  607. in you?

  608. What is God's

  609. plan for your life?

  610. If you're still

  611. sitting here today

  612. breathing,

  613. God's got a plan

  614. for you.

  615. God's got a will

  616. for your life

  617. and we can do it

  618. with joy

  619. because Jesus said

  620. I've come to give you

  621. life and to give you

  622. life more abundantly.

  623. He doesn't want us

  624. to grit our teeth

  625. and just bear it.

  626. He wants us

  627. to get through

  628. this life

  629. with joy

  630. and peace.

  631. You may go

  632. through hard times.

  633. You may go

  634. through some

  635. suffering

  636. and not every

  637. moment is going

  638. to be filled

  639. with happiness

  640. but when the Holy

  641. Spirit lives

  642. within us

  643. we can have joy

  644. and I'm going

  645. to show you

  646. why that's true.

  647. Let's look at

  648. verse 12

  649. to 14.

  650. Giving thanks

  651. to the Father

  652. who has qualified

  653. you to share

  654. in the inheritance

  655. of the saints

  656. in light.

  657. He has delivered

  658. us from the domain

  659. of darkness

  660. and transferred

  661. us to the kingdom

  662. of his beloved

  663. son

  664. in whom we have

  665. redemption

  666. the forgiveness

  667. of sin.

  668. Amen?

  669. Amen?

  670. Paul ends

  671. with thanksgiving

  672. not because

  673. it was easy

  674. not because

  675. life was easy

  676. but because

  677. salvation

  678. is certain.

  679. Folks

  680. we've won.

  681. we've won.

  682. Our destination

  683. is certain.

  684. We know

  685. where we're

  686. going to spend

  687. eternity

  688. if you've

  689. given your

  690. heart and life

  691. to Jesus Christ.

  692. So no matter

  693. what you endure

  694. no matter

  695. what you go

  696. through in this

  697. life

  698. no matter

  699. what suffering

  700. and hardship

  701. and endurance

  702. we face

  703. we know

  704. that we will

  705. spend eternity

  706. with Jesus Christ

  707. and that should

  708. fill our hearts

  709. with joy

  710. and peace

  711. and happiness

  712. endurance

  713. and stamina

  714. to get through

  715. whatever we're

  716. going to get

  717. through every

  718. day.

  719. He says here

  720. God has

  721. qualified us

  722. he's delivered

  723. us

  724. he's transferred

  725. us

  726. he's redeemed

  727. us

  728. and he's

  729. forgiven us

  730. through Jesus

  731. God didn't

  732. just improve

  733. our lives

  734. he adopted

  735. us

  736. into his

  737. family

  738. is that not

  739. good news

  740. God

  741. transferred us

  742. from being

  743. an enemy

  744. of God

  745. living in

  746. darkness

  747. destined

  748. for hell

  749. nothing we

  750. could do

  751. about it

  752. we couldn't

  753. earn it

  754. we couldn't

  755. buy it

  756. we couldn't

  757. deserve it

  758. we could

  759. do nothing

  760. about it

  761. but Christ

  762. qualified us

  763. and the

  764. father adopted

  765. us through

  766. Jesus Christ

  767. into his

  768. family

  769. if you've

  770. ever felt

  771. unworthy

  772. if you've

  773. ever felt

  774. unwanted

  775. if you've

  776. ever felt

  777. like you

  778. don't

  779. belong

  780. then remember

  781. it is

  782. God

  783. who chose

  784. you

  785. it's God

  786. who qualified

  787. you

  788. you didn't

  789. earn salvation

  790. you received

  791. it

  792. and gratitude

  793. becomes the

  794. natural response

  795. of a

  796. redeemed

  797. heart

  798. so what

  799. do we

  800. learn from

  801. this

  802. sermon

  803. here

  804. in

  805. Colossians

  806. what do

  807. we learn

  808. that we

  809. can apply

  810. in our

  811. own

  812. prayer

  813. lives

  814. we learn

  815. that we

  816. can pray

  817. for spiritual

  818. wisdom

  819. of complete

  820. knowledge

  821. and understanding

  822. of God's

  823. will

  824. we can pray

  825. that for

  826. ourselves

  827. we can pray

  828. it for our

  829. loved ones

  830. and others

  831. we can pray

  832. for God

  833. to give us

  834. complete wisdom

  835. and understanding

  836. we can pray

  837. that God

  838. enables us

  839. to live a life

  840. that's pleasing

  841. to him

  842. that we would

  843. bear fruit

  844. in every good

  845. work

  846. we can pray

  847. for strength

  848. to endure

  849. with joy

  850. and then we

  851. can pray

  852. with thanksgiving

  853. for salvation

  854. can you see

  855. how that would

  856. change

  857. you begin

  858. praying that

  859. over your

  860. loved ones

  861. you begin

  862. praying that

  863. over your

  864. own life

  865. how that

  866. can have

  867. a radical

  868. impact

  869. upon your

  870. spiritual

  871. life

  872. you know

  873. I know

  874. that

  875. it's a

  876. reminder

  877. to me

  878. to use

  879. this

  880. praying

  881. over

  882. my family

  883. I have

  884. some family

  885. members

  886. that I'm

  887. not certain

  888. are saved

  889. I have

  890. others

  891. that are

  892. not living

  893. the way

  894. I'd like

  895. for them

  896. to live

  897. and then

  898. others

  899. that I

  900. just pray

  901. that for

  902. that they

  903. would continue

  904. to grow

  905. and mature

  906. and develop

  907. because none

  908. of us

  909. are where

  910. we need

  911. to be

  912. and we

  913. will never

  914. get there

  915. until

  916. Christ

  917. calls us

  918. home

  919. even Paul

  920. said

  921. that he

  922. still was

  923. growing

  924. he still

  925. was developing

  926. and he

  927. would never

  928. get

  929. to the

  930. level

  931. that God

  932. wanted him

  933. to be

  934. as long

  935. as we

  936. contend

  937. with this

  938. flesh

  939. and blood

  940. so we

  941. can

  942. continue

  943. to pray

  944. for that

  945. for all

  946. of us

  947. that we

  948. continue

  949. to grow

  950. in him

  951. I'm going

  952. to ask

  953. Brian to

  954. come lead

  955. us in a

  956. closing

  957. invitation

  958. and you

  959. respond

  960. today

  961. how the

  962. Lord

  963. is

  964. leading

  965. you

  966. do
