  1. to keep a list of everybody who's asking for

  2. these because I think I'm running behind. I forget.

  3. No, no, no, it's fine. Alright, so again we're

  4. talking about eschatology. Eschatology just refers

  5. to the end times and the study of the end times.

  6. We've gone through three of the four views so

  7. far and we're getting now to post -millennialism

  8. and This is the one that you're probably least

  9. familiar with. So last week on millennialism,

  10. that was a new one for you. Now we get into post

  11. -millennialism. This one's new. And you've got

  12. your handouts there, so you can just start on

  13. slide three. Hopefully we'll get the slides up

  14. on the screen pretty soon, maybe. Technology,

  15. good thing you got them in front of you. All

  16. right, so post -millennialism, it holds that

  17. the kingdom of God is now being extended in the

  18. world through the preaching of the gospel. and

  19. the saving work of the Holy Spirit. Eventually,

  20. the world will be Christianized and the change

  21. character of individuals will be reflected in

  22. an uplifted social, economical, political, and

  23. cultural life of mankind. So when you think about

  24. post -millennialism, we've said this a number

  25. of times now, post -millennialism, they are the

  26. optimist, okay? Everything is hopeful, everything

  27. is optimistic, and they think the world is increasingly

  28. going to get better and better and better. But

  29. they don't believe that this means that every

  30. single individual will be saved. However, they

  31. would say that the majority of the world will

  32. become Christians. That the overwhelming majority

  33. of the world will become Christians. And it means

  34. that evil in all of its forms will be reduced

  35. to negligible proportions. And that Christian

  36. principles will be the rule. And that Christ

  37. will return to a truly Christianized world. Post

  38. -millennials believe that the Great Commission

  39. refers not just to the proclamation of the gospel,

  40. but an effectual change brought about through

  41. the preaching of the gospel. And so the preaching

  42. of the gospel will be effective in such a way

  43. that the hearts and lives of nations will be

  44. truly transformed by it. Now, one thing about

  45. post -millennials, so they're saying... Jesus

  46. has given us the great commission, go and make

  47. disciples of all nations, and we would all agree

  48. with that. Yes, we are to go. We are to make

  49. disciples of all nations. They would say that

  50. that command is not just about going to share

  51. the gospel, but it is about the promise that

  52. the nations will all actually become Christians,

  53. and that these nations will begin to rule under

  54. the law of God, and that they will be essentially

  55. Christian nations. In fact, I read one post -millennial,

  56. you'll see it here on slide 9. They maintain

  57. that Christ will not and cannot return to His

  58. church and say, well done, good and faithful

  59. servant, until the task of global conversion.

  60. has been accomplished. And so they believe that

  61. this is Jesus' promise to His church. He's going

  62. to return. He's going to say, well done, good

  63. and faithful servant. And they say this cannot

  64. be done. He cannot return until the world is

  65. actually a Christian world. Only then will He

  66. return. So what do they believe? They believe

  67. that this present age will get continually better

  68. throughout the years. until the vast majority

  69. of the world has become converted to faith in

  70. Christ. Once that has been accomplished, it then

  71. merges slowly but surely into the Golden Age

  72. of Christianity. This Golden Age of Christianity

  73. is what they refer to as the Millennium. So we

  74. all have heard about the Millennium. We've been

  75. talking about the Millennium for four weeks now,

  76. probably a little bit more than that, you know,

  77. because we've been in Revelation for 18 years.

  78. but we've been talking about the Millennium.

  79. So their view of the Millennium is that it does

  80. not refer to a thousand year period in which

  81. Jesus will return on earth and rule here. And

  82. it doesn't refer to the all millennial view that

  83. it refers to the entire church age. They believe

  84. the millennium refers to the time in which the

  85. world has been fully converted to Christ. The

  86. nations are ruling under the law of God. It is

  87. the golden age of Christianity. And that period

  88. of time, that millennium doesn't necessarily

  89. have to be a literal thousand years. It's just

  90. a metaphorical long time. And then Jesus will

  91. eventually return. the golden age and millennium,

  92. it will end with Jesus' return. And so, post

  93. -millennials, they set forth this spiritual kingdom

  94. in the hearts of man. Now, something that we've

  95. been talking about, if you want just some more

  96. words to put to it, the main type of post -millennialism

  97. found today is theonomic, preterist, post -millennialism.

  98. All right, so everybody's gonna remember that?

  99. Yeah? No big words tonight, right? Theonomic,

  100. preterist, Post -millennialism, theonomy, it

  101. just refers to God's law and then so they would

  102. say this is where they believe that the nations

  103. will eventually rule under God's law because

  104. they will be Christian nations, the governments

  105. will be Christian governments and so theonomy

  106. is just ruling in accordance with God's law.

  107. Preterism comes from the Latin meaning gone by

  108. and so the post -millennial understanding of

  109. Revelation is that all of the events of Revelation

  110. have already taken place. All of the events of

  111. Revelation took place in the first century. They

  112. believe that the Great Tribulation occurred during

  113. the lives of those who heard Jesus speak about

  114. the end times in Matthew 24. So in Matthew 24,

  115. Jesus talks about the Great Tribulation and he

  116. says that that generation will experience that.

  117. And so they interpret that to mean that the Great

  118. Tribulation has already taken place. It took

  119. place in the first century. They would say the

  120. reason Revelation speaks of events to transpire

  121. soon is because those events were about to happen

  122. in the lives of John's readers. So they maintain

  123. that even the Antichrist was a first century

  124. phenomenon. So essentially all the events of

  125. Revelation in their perspective have already

  126. taken place. The only thing I think they would

  127. say that has not taken place would be the Golden

  128. Age of Christianity, the Millennium, the unbinding

  129. of Satan and the future rebellion, and then the

  130. return of Jesus and the future judgment. But

  131. pretty much everything else in Revelation, so

  132. the first 19 chapters, they would say have already

  133. taken place. They even say when Revelation speaks

  134. of a 42 -month period, it's referring to the

  135. 42 -month long persecution under Nero, or the

  136. 42 -month long Jewish war with Rome, or the destruction

  137. of the temple. Now, the hardest thing with post

  138. -millennialism is when you're reading post -millennialists

  139. or a defense of post -millennialism, and I've

  140. read a lot of them, the hardest part is trying

  141. to make the case using scripture. That is not

  142. to say that their beliefs are unbiblical. That's

  143. not what I'm saying. But trying to prove their

  144. case with scripture seems to be difficult with

  145. them. I read one post -millennial yesterday.

  146. There's a chapter in a book, this, famous scholar

  147. Lorraine Botner, he was writing this chapter

  148. on post -millennialism. A whole defense of it,

  149. and there was one reference to scripture in there.

  150. And so as I'm interacting with that, I'm like,

  151. this is really hard to critique or, you know,

  152. I want to make the best case for post -millennialism.

  153. That's what I'm doing here. I'm making the best

  154. case for each of these views. It's hard. to make

  155. the best case for something when someone's not

  156. making the best case for themselves. So I'm gonna

  157. try to help you understand where they get their

  158. beliefs. So some scriptural foundation for post

  159. -millennialism. A big one for them, Psalm 22,

  160. 27. All the ends of the earth will remember and

  161. turn to the Lord and all the families of the

  162. nations will bow down before him. Now, something

  163. you'll notice with a lot of these scriptures

  164. is that none of the other views would disagree

  165. with this. We all believe this scripture is true.

  166. Post -millennials would say that this takes place

  167. during this earthly life, during the church age,

  168. and so they would say that all of the families

  169. of the nations are gonna come down and bow down

  170. before Jesus now. They would not say this speaks

  171. of some future date where Jesus returns or even

  172. towards the end. but this is something happening

  173. now. Another big one for them is Psalm chapter

    Psalms 2 chapter mention

  174. 2. As for me, I have set my king on Zion, my

  175. holy hill. Ask of me, and I will make the nations

  176. your heritage, and the ends of the earth your

  177. possession. You shall break them with a rod of

  178. iron, dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.

  179. Now therefore, O kings, be wise, be warned, O

  180. rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear.

  181. and rejoice with trembling kiss the sun lest

  182. he be angry and you perish in the way for his

  183. wrath is quickly kindled and blessed are all

  184. who take refuge in him so again post -millennials

  185. would argue that these verses do not predict

  186. a future reign of christ after his return but

  187. they speak of his present rule in such a way

  188. that the nations will be his heritage now Kings

  189. and rulers are told to serve God now because

  190. all nations are expected to submit to Jesus now

  191. so that the entire earth will become Christianized.

  192. Another passage that I found in defense comes

  193. from Isaiah chapter 2 verses 2 through 4. This

    Isaiah 2:2–4

  194. isn't in your handout, but you can just mark

  195. it down to read later. But the verses say it

  196. shall come to pass in the latter days. that the

  197. mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established

  198. at the highest of the mountains and shall be

  199. lifted up above the hills and all nations shall

  200. flow to it and many people shall come and say

  201. come let us go up to the mountain of the Lord

  202. and to the house of the God of Jacob that he

  203. may teach us his ways and that we may walk in

  204. his paths for out of Zion shall go the law in

  205. the word of the Lord from Jerusalem He shall

  206. judge between the nations and shall decide disputes

  207. for many peoples, and they shall beat their swords

  208. into plowshares and their spears into pruning

  209. hooks. Nations shall not lift up sword against

  210. nation, neither shall they learn war anymore."

  211. So post -millennials would claim that when the

  212. Bible speaks of latter days, it's referring to

  213. the church age, not end times, but to the church

  214. age, and since it refers to the latter days there,

  215. they claim that now is the time when all nations

  216. are going to flow to the church to worship the

  217. Lord. They go on to say that you can clearly

  218. see the Christian influence that has come upon

  219. the nations because the nations are no longer

  220. warring with each other. They're putting down

  221. their instruments of war, and they are having

  222. peace with each other, and it's because they

  223. are flowing to the throne of God to receive instruction

  224. from him. They also point to the parables of

  225. Matthew chapter 13 as evidence for their view

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  226. and they claim that the parables of Matthew 13

  227. show that God's kingdom will grow to encompass

  228. the whole earth during the church age. So do

  229. you remember any of the particular parables from

  230. Matthew 13? Any of them stand out to you? That

  231. sounds like my second born. Yeah, it's got the

  232. four soils in there. It's also got the mustard

  233. seed, you know? You sow something small, but

  234. then it becomes this big plant, right? And then

  235. you read about how something like the, what is

  236. it? The stuff you put in bread, I'm blanking.

  237. the yeast. Yeah, you put a little bit of yeast

  238. and then it rises and so they point to the parables

  239. and say, Jesus is teaching that you put something

  240. smaller, here's something that starts small,

  241. but it grows to encompass the whole world. And

  242. they say that's clear evidence that though the

  243. church starts small, the church will eventually

  244. encompass the whole world and nations will turn

  245. over to Christ. They would say their strongest

  246. case comes from 1 Corinthians chapter 15. 1 Corinthians

1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention 1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  247. chapter 15 says, for he must reign until he has

  248. put all enemies under his feet. When all things

  249. are subjected to him, then the son himself will

  250. also be subjected to him who put all things in

  251. subjection under him that God may be all in all.

  252. Post -millennials argue that these verses clearly

  253. show that Jesus' rule must extend to all nations

  254. in such a way that the entire earth is brought

  255. into subjection to Him. And once this universal

  256. rule is achieved, then the end will come. So

  257. that main verse that they really like to put

  258. forward is, He must rule until He has put all

  259. enemies under His feet. They would say, Jesus

  260. is ruling and reigning now, and His rule must

  261. extend in all of the nations until everything

  262. is in subjection to Him. Now again, it is important

  263. to note that I don't think you're going to find

  264. anyone who disagrees with this verse. Whether

  265. you're a dispensationalist, whether you're a

  266. historic premill, whether you're an all -mill,

  267. every single person that I know of who's a Christian

  268. would say that Jesus is ruling and reigning now.

  269. Does anyone in here disagree with that? No? Yeah,

  270. everybody agree with that, yeah? Okay, let's

  271. just make sure we're all on the same page. Jesus

  272. is seated at the right hand of God. He is ruling

  273. from on high. We're all in agreement there, right?

  274. Jesus is ruling and reigning now. So no one disagrees

  275. with that, but they would say he has to rule

  276. until everything's in subjection to him. Therefore,

  277. the whole earth, the whole world must be in subjection

  278. to him. And that means that the whole world is

  279. gonna become Christian. Not every individual,

  280. but the majority of individuals. So when they

  281. look at Revelation chapter 20, they agree with

    Revelation 20 chapter mention

  282. the all -millennials that the thousand years

  283. is metaphorical and symbolic. However, they believe

  284. the millennium begins after the majority of the

  285. world is converted to faith in Christ. Post -millennials

  286. agree with all -millennials that verses one through

  287. three refer to the spiritual binding of Satan

  288. that takes away his ability to deceive the nations,

  289. and it ensures that the gospel can go forward

  290. with success. Post -millennials offer a unique

  291. interpretation of verses four through six, though.

  292. So if you remember verses four through six, dispensationalists,

  293. they said it refers to two or three different

  294. resurrections. You have the resurrection of New

  295. Testament Christian believers, you have the resurrection

  296. of Old Testament saints, you have the resurrection

  297. of unbelievers. Historic free mills said that

  298. this refers to the resurrection of all Christians

  299. and then all non -Christians. and the all -millennials

  300. said that the first resurrection referred to

  301. those who have died but now are living with Jesus

  302. in heaven. They have died but they have come

  303. to life and they are ruling and reigning with

  304. him in heaven. Post -millennials, on the other

  305. hand, they believe that this first resurrection

  306. refers to being born again. So we were spiritually

  307. dead, but we have been made alive in Christ.

  308. And so they say that that's what the first resurrection

  309. It refers to, so therefore they believe that

  310. everyone who is a Christian is currently taking

  311. place in the rule and reign of Christ. Verse

  312. 5 refers to all the spiritually dead people who

  313. will not be raised until the last day. Verses

  314. 7 through 10 refers to the releasing of Satan

  315. and his rebellion against Christ as well as Christ's

  316. victory over the rebellion. And then comes the

  317. end when Jesus will escort all people to judgment.

  318. And so if you just look at some key points of

  319. post -millennialism, they are hopeful, they're

  320. optimistic, they believe that the world is increasingly

  321. getting better. The vast majority of the world

  322. will be converted to faith in Christ. This leads

  323. to the golden age of Christianity, which is the

  324. millennium in their view. During the millennium,

  325. the world will be Christianized, nations and

  326. governments will be under the law of God. They

  327. believe the millennium is not really a literal

  328. thousand years. First resurrection refers to

  329. being born again. Towards the end of the millennium,

  330. Satan will be unbound and will lead a rebellion.

  331. Jesus returns to defeat that rebellion and then

  332. comes the end when Jesus escorts all people to

  333. the throne of God for judgment. So we had to

  334. rush kind of through that to get it done, but

  335. now that we are done with the four views, what

  336. are your questions on eschatology? Do you want

  337. me to try to clarify anything for you? Do you

  338. have any points that you would like me to address,

  339. anything like that? There have been some questions

  340. about where I stand on eschatology. You're welcome

  341. to ask that at this time if you would like. Go

  342. ahead, Kaylee. Yeah, that's a good question.

  343. So anybody watching online, the question is,

  344. do Post Mills interpret some things literally

  345. and some things symbolically? I think that applies

  346. to every eschatological view, not just Post Millennials.

  347. I was having this conversation with my buddy

  348. Brad. Again, if you're watching, I love you,

  349. but we pick on each other. We got into a debate

  350. about this earlier today on the phone. So he's

  351. a dispensationalist. Dispensationalists say they're

  352. literalists. They interpret everything literally.

  353. But they don't, because the 70 weeks have to

  354. be interpreted symbolically. A week is not actually

  355. one week, it's a period of seven years. So we

  356. need to extend some grace and understand that

  357. everybody interprets some things literally and

  358. everybody interprets some things symbolically.

  359. Dispensationalists, again, they say they're literalists,

  360. but then you look at the seven churches and they

  361. would say, well, it's not just that they're addressing...

  362. these seven churches in Revelation, but these

  363. seven churches actually symbolically represent

  364. different ages throughout church history. So

  365. yes, they interpret some things literally, some

  366. things symbolically. Same thing with all mills,

  367. historic pre mills, post mills, everybody is

  368. the same on that. So good question. Anybody else?

  369. Points on eschatology that you would like clarified?

  370. Anything that's confusing? Anything like that?

  371. Caroline. Yep Yeah, it depends on like your branch

  372. of Numerology, I don't know that that's is that

  373. the right word for it. I don't think it is I

  374. think there's something else Yeah So there's

  375. a question about numerology and if that's helpful

  376. to use in the Bible, if that contributes to eschatological

  377. views. Basically it's when you look kind of too

  378. deeply into numbers or make bigger deal out of

  379. numbers than they are. I've seen people... anytime

  380. there's any sort of event happening in the world,

  381. there's gonna be an eclipse. And they're like,

  382. the eclipse is happening on seven 13. And if

  383. you look in the Bible at Matthew chapter seven,

  384. verse 13, and so they like really read into that

  385. kind of stuff. And the thing is every verse number

  386. and chapter number. it's not in the original

  387. text. Like I've seen our manuscripts, there's

  388. no numbers there. So that was added. So you can't

  389. just say, well, look at chapter seven, verse

  390. 13, because that was added by man to be helpful.

  391. So it depends on how you're using it, right?

  392. So if you're using it like that to say, hey,

  393. this event corresponds with a chapter and verse

  394. number, I don't think that's helpful. If you

  395. are reading things into scripture, that's not

  396. helpful. But if you're looking at numbers and

  397. trying to ask, the question, what's the best

  398. way to understand what's being communicated by

  399. this number? Then I think that's helpful. So

  400. when you have the 70 weeks, you have to deal

  401. with that, right? So you can either interpret

  402. it as 70 literal weeks. You can interpret it

  403. as seven periods of time or 70 periods of time.

  404. You can interpret it as every week is seven weeks.

  405. When you get into revelation and you look at

  406. numbers like 144 ,000, it could be a literal

  407. 144 ,000, or it could be 12 times 12 times a

  408. thousand. 12 tribes of Israel, 12 disciples of

  409. Jesus, number of completion. So it depends on

  410. how you're trying to use the numbers and I think

  411. there's a helpful way and I think people can

  412. always press it too far. I don't know if that's

  413. a good answer. Okay, I have a way of talking

  414. a lot about a lot of different things and maybe

  415. there's something in there you can take away.

  416. Anybody else? Yeah Doug. Yeah Yeah, I mean there

  417. are a lot of instances in the Bible where a period

  418. of time is is different for us than it is for

  419. God and so It could be a literal thousand years

  420. and it's good. It could literally be Jesus gonna

  421. return He's gonna set up a kingdom here on earth.

  422. It's gonna be a literal 1 ,000 years Or it could

  423. be metaphorical and symbolic, because Revelation

  424. is a very symbolic book. And so it's just one

  425. of those things where you can't say with certainty

  426. it's definitely going to be this. Because you

  427. can straw man any position, right? So I've seen

  428. people who are not dispensationalists or not

  429. historic premails say, well, this is the only

  430. place in all of scripture that ever refers to

  431. a 1 ,000 year period on earth. And they act like

  432. that's just an absolutely dismantling argument.

  433. But here's the thing, the Bible only has to say

  434. something once for it to be true. So Jesus only

  435. once said, I'm the way, the truth and the life.

  436. We would never go, well, that's the only place

  437. where he said that. So obviously there has to

  438. be, so that's not a good argument. but also there

  439. is something to be said for the fact that this

  440. is the only place and so we have to wrestle with

  441. these issues. So my whole point in bringing this

  442. to you is to say we don't need to be quick to

  443. dismiss all these other views and just say like

  444. oh they're not taking scripture seriously or

  445. they're just going with the times or this or

  446. that. people are basing their views on scripture.

  447. They just come to it with a different approach

  448. for interpretation than we do, and we need to

  449. be respectful of other Christians who disagree

  450. with us, especially on issues of eschatology,

  451. okay? So, again, that's not something to get

  452. worked up about. If you want to disagree with

  453. me on that, that's fine. We can still be friends.

  454. If you want to disagree with me on Jesus, we're

  455. going to have a serious conversation about that

  456. and talk about it, but this is not something

  457. to get up in arms about. Any other questions,

  458. eschatology? Anything you want to know that I

  459. can try to answer? I don't have all the answers,

  460. by the way. I've just read a lot. Yeah. Yeah

  461. Yeah, yeah, I'm not the type of person the only

  462. time I will engage in an eschatological conversation

  463. is if you're going to straw man my position then

  464. we're gonna we're gonna open the Bible and we're

  465. gonna I'm gonna make the case for why I believe

  466. what I believe But I will never start a debate

  467. and be like I can't believe you hold to this

  468. It's like I've got better things to do with my

  469. time than that my buddy today The reason we got

  470. into that conversation is because he was trying

  471. to straw man my position and I was like, okay

  472. Well now I've got to open scripture and you're

  473. gonna be on the phone with me for the next hour

  474. So you started this just understand that But

  475. there have been questions about where I stand

  476. on eschatology. Here's what I'll say. I have

  477. gone back between two positions, at least early

  478. on in my faith. I would go back and forth between

  479. historic pre -millennialism and all -millennialism.

  480. I've never been a dispensationalist. I've never

  481. been a post -mill, maybe one day. Who knows?

  482. We'll see. But I've gone back and forth on those,

  483. but I've been an all -millennial probably for

  484. the past five years pretty consistently. And

  485. that's my view. That's how I understand revelation.

  486. I can defend that with scripture. I'd be happy

  487. to back it up. I think I made the case for all

  488. millennialism last week when I told on it. But

  489. that is not to say that I have to be right. I

  490. could be wrong and someone else could be right.

  491. But this is something that we can disagree on.

  492. So that's where I stand on eschatology. Hope

  493. we can all still be friends after this. Yeah,

  494. we're good. Sure. No, Caroline says no. We're

  495. never talking again. All right. Anything else

  496. you want to say before we close? That's right.

  497. I agree. Yeah, so This is again where I come

  498. back to this and say There are people who are

  499. smarter than me on every side of this and they

  500. hold to every position There are doctors who

  501. were Dispensationless there are doctors who were

  502. post mill and on mill and historic pre mill It's

  503. it's foolish to try to say that we think we've

  504. got it all figured out Have your view be able

  505. to defend it with scripture, but at the end of

  506. the day Show grace. Michael, as always, you get

  507. the word of wisdom.
