  1. Isaiah chapter 9, the easiest way to get across the country is to buy a plane ticket and fly.

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  2. ! It's not the most scenic way to do it.

  3. If there's a cloud coverage, you won't see anything.

  4. But it is efficient.

  5. And most of us know the routine.

  6. You got the 311 bag and you can leave your shoes on now.

  7. Thank the Lord.

  8. Some love flying and some hate flying and some do it for a living.

  9. For most of her life, my oldest daughter Abby's flights have been unpredictable.

  10. She has an ear condition that sometimes the pressure change causes intense pain.

  11. And sometimes it don't bother her at all.

  12. And if you know Abby, you understand that.

  13. Sometimes it bothers her, sometimes it don't.

  14. But if it does bother her, she'll let you know it.

  15. We were flying together once not long ago and the pain hit hard.

  16. She was sitting at the window and there was a seat between us that was empty and I was sitting in the aisle.

  17. And we were at 30,000 feet.

  18. And she looked at me and said, Daddy, I can't do this.

  19. And I said, Honey, you don't have a choice.

  20. We are going to do it.

  21. And we're going to land this plane.

  22. So the fear that she gets is different than what some other people get when they fly.

  23. Some people dread the takeoff.

  24. They just don't like leaving the ground.

  25. And some people don't like landing.

  26. They don't like rushing toward the ground.

  27. It don't really bother me a whole lot.

  28. But what bothers me the most is turbulence.

  29. Because it comes out of nowhere.

  30. You hit an air pocket and drop.

  31. And what I've learned to do is pay attention to where I look and see what happens.

  32. See, I watch the faces of the flight attendants.

  33. And when they tell them to buckle up and sit down,

  34. I look at their faces to see if they're whispering to one another and those type things.

  35. If they're calm, I'm calm.

  36. Now, I found out since I believe that that they're actually trained to look calm even when they're freaking out.

  37. So that don't really help.

  38. But anyway, I also find comfort in the voice of the pilot.

  39. Because when the pilot comes on and says,

  40. All right, we're going to hit some turbulence.

  41. And there are going to be some air pockets.

  42. And it's going to be a little rough coming in.

  43. But we're steady.

  44. And he sounds confident.

  45. And he sounds instructional on what he tells us to do.

  46. We know what to expect.

  47. And we know what to do.

  48. And it just kind of calms things.

  49. Wouldn't it be nice

  50. if when turbulence hits our lives,

  51. if we had someone to look to for comfort,

  52. someone to look to for guidance?

  53. I'm thankful today that we do.

  54. And that Prince of Peace came to us as a babe in a manger.

  55. He's the reason we celebrate Christmas.

  56. And once again, I want you to listen to the prophet.

  57. Predict the coming of the Lord 700 years before his arrival.

  58. And notice how he introduces him.

  59. Isaiah chapter 9, 6 and 7 says,

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  60. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given.

  61. And the government shall be upon his shoulder.

  62. And his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

  63. Of the increase of his government and of peace, there will be no end.

  64. On the throne of David and over his kingdom to establish it and uphold it with justice and with righteousness.

  65. From this time forth and forevermore, the zeal of the Lord will do this.

  66. This passage is weighty.

  67. It gathers up all that begins when Christ comes into the world.

  68. It encapsulates the totality of what will begin when Christ is born.

  69. It says, for under us a child is born.

  70. That means that Christ is born.

  71. He's human.

  72. A real boy in a real world, he came dependent.

  73. He came limited.

  74. He came human.

  75. But he's also a son that's given.

  76. This didn't start in Bethlehem.

  77. This is the eternal son of God.

  78. Given to us.

  79. He didn't stop being God.

  80. Humanity was added to him.

  81. Only God can bear the weight of sin, but only man can stand in our place.

  82. He's the God man.

  83. Then it says, and the government shall be upon his shoulder.

  84. When a king was enthroned, a royal robe was draped across his shoulders.

  85. It symbolized rule and authority.

  86. But with this king, it's more than just a robe.

  87. He bears the weight of the responsibility that he has been given.

  88. And that is the burden of redemption.

  89. He's bearing the weight of the sins of a fallen world upon his shoulders.

  90. He is our savior.

  91. But he's not only our savior, but he is a wonder of a counselor.

  92. He knows what we need before we ask.

  93. He is the mighty God.

  94. He has power over sin, death, and hell.

  95. And he has the power to save.

  96. He is everlasting father.

  97. He will never leave us.

  98. He knows, can do all things, and remains forever.

  99. Yet with all of those titles, my favorite title appropriates his position is this last one, and that is he's the prince of peace.

  100. I don't know anybody who likes scrapes and squabbles.

  101. I know people who have a tendency to get into it.

  102. Some just learn how to cause commotion.

  103. That's kind of what they do.

  104. But even when they do that, they kind of wish it would stop.

  105. They just want to win.

  106. But peace is a good thing for all people.

  107. We're all in the need of peace.

  108. And the gift of Christmas is, in Christ, is that we have peace.

  109. But that only comes through the prince of peace.

  110. He did everything that he did and does everything that he does so that we can have peace.

  111. So I just want to tell you what we have this morning when we have the prince of peace.

  112. And just look at what scripture teaches us.

  113. As it elaborates on the peace that we can find only in the Lord Jesus.

  114. In him we have a prevailing peace.

  115. In John chapter 14 through John chapter 16, Jesus is in the upper room with his disciples.

John 14 chapter mention John 16 chapter mention

  116. He is preparing them for a time when he will no longer physically be present with them.

  117. And he promises them that the coming of the Holy Spirit, he promises them of the coming of the Holy Spirit.

  118. And he assures them that he will be in their presence.

  119. He speaks of his prevailing presence even after his ascension.

  120. And he closes that out by saying in John 16, 33,

  121. In me you may have peace.

  122. In this world you will have tribulation.

  123. But take heart.

  124. I have overcome the world.

  125. Now the tribulation that he speaks of in this passage is not talking about some end time, certain number of year kind of tribulation.

  126. No, no, no.

  127. He's talking about the stuff that we deal with every day of our life.

  128. The pains and the sorrows and the difficulties that we deal with every day of our life.

  129. And sometimes on the worst days of our life.

  130. It's been a rough week.

  131. It really has.

  132. I spent the first part of the week one day afternoon going to a father's funeral.

  133. One lost his father.

  134. A good, godly man.

  135. That went on to be with the Lord.

  136. And he buried his beloved dad.

  137. And the next day I got a call.

  138. That somebody had tragically, quickly lost their son.

  139. And tried to walk through that with that family.

  140. Through their celebration of life for him this week.

  141. It's been a rough week.

  142. There's tribulation.

  143. Trials and difficulties in our lives.

  144. That are tough to walk away.

  145. To walk through.

  146. You can't really walk away from it.

  147. It goes with you.

  148. It hangs out.

  149. And so he tells us.

  150. And he knows this, by the way.

  151. He knows all those things.

  152. Take heart.

  153. I've overcome the world.

  154. And when he says that, he's not only talking about some world power.

  155. He's talking about whatever this world has.

  156. Whatever it throws at you.

  157. He can handle that.

  158. I want you to understand that peace is not an end of conflict.

  159. It's not.

  160. It is his presence in the midst of that conflict.

  161. It is his presence in the midst of that stress.

  162. It is his presence in the midst of that difficulty.

  163. And when he says that he has overcome, that means that he's won through the cross.

  164. And in him, because if we've given our lives to him, in his victory, we find victory.

  165. In him we win too.

  166. The empty tomb is the evidence of our triumph of the Lord.

  167. There's a prevailing peace that he gives us.

  168. But not only that, but scripture also teaches that we have a perpetual peace.

  169. It does not go away.

  170. I mean, listen, we may stray, but God's not going anywhere.

  171. We may not feel his presence in times in our lives.

  172. But he's not went anywhere.

  173. Your feelings are not the basis of the truth of the presence of God.

  174. Understand that.

  175. He's beyond that.

  176. I want you to listen to how Paul closes out the second letter to the Thessalonians.

  177. He's saying, 2 Thessalonians 3, 16, he says,

  178. Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times, in every way the Lord be with you all.

  179. He says, at all times.

  180. Do you know what that means?

  181. In the Greek, that means at all times.

  182. That's what it means.

  183. It means every season of your life, everything that you go through, in every way, in every situation that we find ourselves in, he's always there.

  184. Our peace is not found in the absence of conflict or loss or the absence of hardship.

  185. It's found in the perpetual presence of the Lord.

  186. He's not going anywhere.

  187. He's right there with you.

  188. He's anchored into the believer's life, and we should be anchored into him.

  189. And as unstable as this world is, the Lord is always stable.

  190. He's always steady.

  191. He's always faithful.

  192. He's a perpetual peace.

  193. But not only that, but Scripture also teaches us that we have a poised peace in Christ.

  194. I want you to listen to how Isaiah writes about this in Isaiah 26, verse 3.

    Isaiah 26:3

  195. He says,

  196. You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you because he trusts in you.

  197. If I were to spin around real fast in this spot right here on this stage, I'd probably fall off.

  198. And the reality is most of you would laugh quicker than you would get up and help.

  199. And that's sad, but that's the truth.

  200. But have you ever seen how fast a ballet dancer or a figure skater can spin and never lose their balance?

  201. They use a technique called spotting.

  202. And when they spin, they fix their eyes on one unmoving point.

  203. Maybe it's a spot on the wall or a mark in the room.

  204. And as they turn their bodies, the head rotates last as their eyes are fixed on that one spot.

  205. And then they keep that fixed as long as possible.

  206. And then when necessary, they quickly snap their head around and find that same spot again.

  207. And good ones do it very effectively.

  208. When life is spinning and times are tough and circumstances are turning fast,

  209. peace does not come from life slowing down to a stop because it don't do it.

  210. It don't.

  211. It comes when we fix our eyes on Jesus in the midst of the turns.

  212. He is stable.

  213. And we can be stable when we look to him.

  214. But not only do we have a poised peace, but we also have a peculiar peace.

  215. Jesus is clear in John 14 that the peace that he gives us is not like the world can give.

  216. If you don't believe that, watch the news.

  217. Because world peace is fragile and it's temporary.

  218. Calm for a time, but built on a false sense of hope.

  219. However, the peace of Christ is different.

  220. The peace of Christ is not just a mere distraction.

  221. Jesus offers rest.

  222. He removes our fears.

  223. He removes our doubts.

  224. Peace comes when he speaks.

  225. When he looked at the raging sea, he said, peace be still.

  226. And all those choppy waters calmed immediately.

  227. And with that same power and with that same voice,

  228. he can speak into our lives of a believer.

  229. In the struggle and in the storms that are overwhelming us.

  230. And somehow give a sense of calm in the midst of that.

  231. But I want to be clear, that does not come for everyone.

  232. I call it a peculiar peace because peculiar is a word that's used twice in the King James Version.

  233. Once it's used in 1 Peter and once it's used in Titus.

  234. And when we think of the word peculiar, it normally means strange or odd or awkward.

  235. Some of y'all may know what that means.

  236. There's even a South Carolina word that when I used this in Mississippi, they looked at me kind of strange.

  237. But some of y'all know what I'm talking about when I say choir.

  238. Just kind of choir, you know.

  239. It's not queer.

  240. Choir.

  241. Just kind of choir.

  242. They say that to you and you're not from here.

  243. It's just strange, awkward.

  244. It's just kind of choir, you know.

  245. Biblically, that's not what it means.

  246. Biblically, it means one's own possession.

  247. Something that's different because it's set apart as a treasure.

  248. You can't have the peace of Christ apart from a relationship with Christ.

  249. You can't.

  250. If he had not come as a babe, there'd be no relationship to have with him.

  251. But he has come.

  252. And because he's come, we have that opportunity.

  253. And that peace is only found in him.

  254. Have no fear.

  255. This peace is not elusive.

  256. Scripture teaches us that not only is it for us who come in Christ, but it is also promised.

  257. It is a promised peace.

  258. John 14, 27.

  259. Jesus said, peace I leave with you.

  260. My peace I give to you.

  261. Not as the world gives do I give to you.

  262. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

  263. Listen, I try my best to give comfort to those who are hurting.

  264. Try to find the words to say.

  265. Most of the time I spend a lot of time quiet.

  266. Because I've heard a lot of preachers say dumb stuff and I don't want to say something dumb.

  267. I just shouldn't not say anything.

  268. Sometimes presence is the best.

  269. But I want you to know that whatever you go through, whatever you face,

  270. I'm well aware that I,

  271. as good as he is,

  272. Brian,

  273. Jeff,

  274. anybody on this staff,

  275. we can't give you

  276. a real sense

  277. of wholeness and completeness and peace

  278. like the Lord Jesus can.

  279. Matter of fact,

  280. all I want to do is point you to Christ

  281. because he's the one

  282. that provides that

  283. for you

  284. and he promises it.

  285. And so you can rest in that.

  286. There's times that feels shaky,

  287. but I believe you can rest in that.

  288. The word for peace there is shalom

  289. and it means wholeness

  290. and it means completeness.

  291. Augustine of HIPAA wrote this.

  292. He said,

  293. you may,

  294. you have made us for yourself,

  295. oh Lord,

  296. and our hearts are,

  297. is,

  298. and our heart is restless

  299. until it rests in you.

  300. That's where we find our hope.

  301. And,

  302. and when we hope in him,

  303. we find peace.

  304. And it is my prayer for you this Christmas

  305. that you find your peace in Christ.

  306. Now let's go back to the text

  307. and look at verse seven.

  308. It says,

  309. of the increase of his government

  310. and of his,

  311. of the peace,

  312. there'll be no end

  313. on the throne of David

  314. and over his kingdom

  315. to establish it

  316. and to uphold it with justice

  317. and with righteousness

  318. from this time forth

  319. and forevermore.

  320. What,

  321. what began as

  322. Christ's birth

  323. did not stop at his death.

  324. His resurrection

  325. did not stop it.

  326. His ascension into heaven

  327. did not stop it.

  328. Christ rule

  329. and reigns today

  330. in the hearts

  331. and the lives

  332. of believers

  333. and one day

  334. he'll rule

  335. on this earth

  336. and all will know

  337. of his rule and reign

  338. and it cannot be stopped.

  339. It will not be slowed.

  340. It will not be hindered.

  341. It will not be bothered.

  342. It will not be compromised.

  343. It speaks of justice.

  344. He is just

  345. and he displays justice.

  346. It speaks of righteousness.

  347. He is right

  348. and he displays righteousness.

  349. Forever.

  350. forever.

  351. And you say,

  352. preacher,

  353. how in the world

  354. does that happen?

  355. Well,

  356. this is the best part.

  357. The zeal

  358. of the Lord

  359. of hosts

  360. will do this.

  361. This is not something

  362. that we can concoct.

  363. I am thankful

  364. for those who came

  365. after the first of December

  366. and decorated this sanctuary

  367. and this facility

  368. so beautifully.

  369. Thank you

  370. for all that effort.

  371. And I am thankful

  372. for those who help us

  373. to have the fellowships

  374. that we have

  375. and do all the background work

  376. that nobody even sees

  377. to make it all special.

  378. thank you.

  379. And the choir

  380. and the orchestra

  381. and the drama team

  382. and the tech team

  383. and the children

  384. and the youth,

  385. didn't they just

  386. blow us away?

  387. I mean,

  388. just absolutely.

  389. My mom and dad

  390. came Sunday night

  391. and on the front porch

  392. she said,

  393. my mama said,

  394. I'm ready to go to heaven now.

  395. And I said,

  396. not right now,

  397. mama,

  398. go to the car.

  399. It was wonderful.

  400. And I've tried my best

  401. through something

  402. that a man said

  403. about 2,700 years ago

  404. about the hope

  405. that we'd have in Christ

  406. and point you to Christ.

  407. But I want to be clear.

  408. In all our efforts,

  409. we can't concoct.

  410. We can't drum up.

  411. We can't do

  412. what only God can do.

  413. We can't make it happen.

  414. God's plan

  415. is humanly impossible.

  416. And because of that,

  417. many have a hard time

  418. believing it is possible

  419. because they can't see it.

  420. They don't place

  421. their faith in Christ

  422. because they don't

  423. see it happening.

  424. They want to see it.

  425. Well,

  426. it's happening.

  427. And it's not just

  428. coming from us.

  429. Scripture says

  430. the zeal

  431. of the Lord

  432. of hosts

  433. will do this.

  434. Zeal there

  435. means deep,

  436. heartfelt passion.

  437. It's a fervent passion.

  438. It's a focused passion.

  439. It's not always loud.

  440. It's not showy.

  441. It's deep

  442. and it's settled

  443. and it's real.

  444. This is the passion

  445. that God has

  446. as he carries out

  447. his will.

  448. This is the passion

  449. that he has for us.

  450. This is why

  451. he sent his son

  452. to be born of a virgin.

  453. This is why

  454. Christ lived

  455. a sinless life.

  456. This is why

  457. he died

  458. a sinner's death.

  459. That is the zeal

  460. that raised him

  461. from the dead

  462. and the same zeal

  463. that will bring him

  464. back on a cloud

  465. to receive us

  466. to be where he is.

  467. That is why

  468. he is

  469. as we've talked

  470. about

  471. unto us.

  472. There's no need

  473. for you today

  474. to doubt

  475. the zeal

  476. of the Lord.

  477. He is

  478. passionate

  479. for you.

  480. It is

  481. unquestionable.

  482. This is the question.

  483. What about

  484. your heartfelt

  485. fervor

  486. for him?

  487. Do we have

  488. a zeal

  489. for Christ?

  490. I'm talking

  491. about a life-changing

  492. zeal.

  493. Do we have

  494. a passion

  495. for Christ?

  496. I mean,

  497. do we really

  498. want him

  499. to rule

  500. and reign

  501. in our lives?

  502. Not to let us

  503. have it our way

  504. and bless

  505. our efforts

  506. along the way,

  507. but instead

  508. to give up

  509. on our way

  510. and say,

  511. God,

  512. I want to go

  513. your way.

  514. I want to have

  515. a passion

  516. and a zeal

  517. that changes

  518. my life

  519. and my perspective

  520. of how

  521. I look

  522. to you.

  523. Do you

  524. want him

  525. to have

  526. his way

  527. in your life?

  528. Do you

  529. really

  530. trust his

  531. counsel?

  532. He is

  533. a wonder

  534. of a

  535. counselor.

  536. Do you

  537. really stand

  538. not in your

  539. strength,

  540. but in his

  541. might?

  542. He's a

  543. mighty God.

  544. Hard

  545. question.

  546. Do you

  547. trust his

  548. timing?

  549. He is

  550. the

  551. everlasting

  552. father.

  553. He's

  554. already

  555. in your

  556. tomorrows.

  557. Do you

  558. rest in

  559. his peace?

  560. For he

  561. is our

  562. prince.

  563. With

  564. the zeal

  565. that he

  566. has for

  567. us,

  568. my hope

  569. this Christmas

  570. is may

  571. our lives

  572. not just

  573. for Christmas,

  574. but well

  575. beyond that,

  576. may our

  577. lives show

  578. our zeal

  579. for him

  580. because when

  581. we get

  582. passionate

  583. about the

  584. Lord

  585. and ask

  586. him to

  587. rule and

  588. reign in

  589. our lives,

  590. to guide

  591. us and

  592. we'll follow

  593. his direction,

  594. to lead

  595. us and we

  596. won't buck

  597. along the

  598. way.

  599. But we'll

  600. try our

  601. best to

  602. carry out

  603. what God

  604. would have

  605. for us.

  606. Do you

  607. know how

  608. his will

  609. will be

  610. done in

  611. your life?

  612. The zeal

  613. of the

  614. Lord of

  615. hosts

  616. will do

  617. this.

  618. With every

  619. head bowed

  620. and every

  621. eye closed,

  622. has there

  623. ever been

  624. a time

  625. in your

  626. life

  627. when you

  628. asked the

  629. Lord Jesus

  630. to forgive

  631. you and to

  632. come into

  633. your life

  634. and to

  635. save you?

  636. It's where

  637. it all

  638. begins.

  639. And with

  640. that bond,

  641. a precious

  642. bond,

  643. an empowerment

  644. and a

  645. strengthening

  646. that will

  647. carry you.

  648. And sometimes

  649. you won't

  650. sense that

  651. carry, and

  652. I'll tell you,

  653. in hard times

  654. you won't

  655. sense that

  656. carry.

  657. You'll look

  658. back and

  659. you'll see

  660. how God

  661. was with

  662. you all

  663. the way.

  664. The evidence

  665. will be

  666. there.

  667. But it

  668. begins with

  669. a commitment

  670. to follow

  671. him, a

  672. surrender of

  673. your life

  674. to follow

  675. him.

  676. If you've

  677. done that,

  678. have you

  679. ever acknowledged

  680. that publicly?

  681. Have you

  682. ever let

  683. other people

  684. know that?

  685. Is it just

  686. something private

  687. within you?

  688. The Bible's

  689. clear by

  690. Christ's

  691. example and

  692. by his

  693. commission that

  694. we are to

  695. let other

  696. people know

  697. about that

  698. through baptism.

  699. What better

  700. gift to give

  701. at Christmas

  702. time than

  703. your life

  704. to Christ

  705. and your

  706. commitment to

  707. follow him

  708. and his

  709. will for

  710. your life

  711. to publicly

  712. acknowledge

  713. him through

  714. baptism?

  715. Either one

  716. of those

  717. things has

  718. never happened

  719. to you.

  720. I encourage

  721. you to come

  722. during this

  723. invitation.

  724. Maybe you're

  725. here this

  726. morning and

  727. God's leading

  728. you to

  729. Pickens First

  730. Baptist Church.

  731. You're not a

  732. member and you

  733. feel drawn to

  734. be here.

  735. This is the

  736. place that God

  737. would have

  738. you to serve.

  739. I encourage

  740. you to come

  741. and follow the

  742. Lord in that.

  743. God's

  744. love and

  745. for the rest

  746. of us.

  747. What is it

  748. in our lives

  749. that hold us

  750. back from

  751. being as

  752. passionate for

  753. the Lord

  754. Jesus as he

  755. is for us?

  756. Besides our

  757. own fragile

  758. humanity?

  759. are there

  760. hindrances in

  761. our life today

  762. that we need

  763. to lay down

  764. before him

  765. and give

  766. over to him

  767. to be

  768. everything

  769. that he'd

  770. have us to

  771. be?

  772. To live with

  773. a zeal that

  774. only he can

  775. give us?

  776. Whatever that

  777. is today

  778. give it to

  779. him.

  780. Lay it down.

  781. You can do

  782. that where you

  783. stand in just a

  784. moment.

  785. You can do

  786. it at this

  787. altar.

  788. I'll be happy

  789. to pray with

  790. you whatever

  791. it is.

  792. May your

  793. zeal for

  794. Christ mark

  795. your life.

  796. Lord Jesus

  797. lead us right

  798. now to be

  799. obedient to

  800. follow any

  801. way you'd lead

  802. us Father I

  803. pray in Jesus

  804. name.

  805. Amen.
