  1. Mark chapter 5, we live in a world of instant.

    Mark 5 chapter mention

  2. ! We can text someone and we can expect an instant response.

  3. !

  4. We love instant. I remember just a couple of weeks ago when half of America was under snow and ice, Amazon no longer could deliver in two days.

  5. They estimated my delivery to be in a week. In a week, I needed it before the storm. I didn't need it after it.

  6. I was blown away. Something has to be done about something like that.

  7. We live in a microwave society. We put things in the microwave and we've learned that if you stand in front of it and stare at it, it'll be quicker.

  8. We love things instantly.

  9. Things aren't always instant.

  10. And the reality is that God seldom works instantly.

  11. Very often, there's delay.

  12. Prayers feel unanswered.

  13. Delay feels like denial.

  14. Waiting feels like failure.

  15. I mean, surely if it's going to happen, it would have happened by now.

  16. However, the reality is that God's not bound by our clocks.

  17. And I want you to know He's not intimidated by our persistence.

  18. He works on His time.

  19. He works deliberately.

  20. And He uses waiting and delay and even interruption to accomplish great things in line with His purposes.

  21. In Mark chapter 5, Jairus is in a heavenly holding pattern.

    Mark 5 chapter mention

  22. And it's tough when you're in the waiting room of faith.

  23. But that's where He is.

  24. And God seems late.

  25. Prayers seem unanswered.

  26. However, I want us to learn from Him and His experience that silence from heaven is not the same as the absence of God.

  27. And that God often does His greatest work after tough delays.

  28. Let's look at it this morning.

  29. It's in Mark chapter 5, beginning in verse 21.

    Mark 5 chapter mention

  30. And remember the preceding passage that we dealt with last week.

  31. When Jesus traveled the six miles over the Sea of Galilee to the land of the Gentiles,

  32. He was met by a demoniac.

  33. A man that was filled with thousands of demons.

  34. And He healed that man and moved those demons into swine.

  35. And those pigs ran off a cliff into the water and died.

  36. And the people that owned the pigs and the people who watched it and got scared by it wanted to believe.

  37. The man who He healed wanted to go with Him.

  38. But He left Him there as what I called last week the first missionary to the Gentiles.

  39. And said, go tell people.

  40. And He did.

  41. He went and told it throughout the Decapolis, Scripture says.

  42. Which are ten Roman cities there.

  43. So now He gets back in the boat.

  44. And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about Him.

  45. And He was beside the sea.

  46. Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name.

  47. And seeing Him, He fell at His feet and implored Him, earnestly saying,

  48. My little girl is at the point of death.

  49. Come and lay your hands on her so that she may be made well and live.

  50. And He went with Him.

  51. And a great crowd followed Him and thronged about Him.

  52. Now, verses 25 through 34 give us a divine interruption.

  53. When a woman came to Him with a health issue and stops Jesus.

  54. And she was in such great need.

  55. Christ healed her miraculously.

  56. And the Lord willing, we'll look at that next week.

  57. But I want you to notice what happens as He ministers with her.

  58. It says in verse 35,

  59. While He was still speaking,

  60. There came from the ruler's house some who said,

  61. Your daughter is dead.

  62. Why trouble the teacher any further?

  63. But overhearing what they said,

  64. Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue,

  65. Do not fear, only believe.

  66. And He allowed no one to follow Him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James.

  67. They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue,

  68. and Jesus saw a commotion.

  69. People weeping and wailing loudly.

  70. And when He entered, He said to them,

  71. Why are you making a commotion and weeping?

  72. The child is not dead, but sleeping.

  73. And they laughed at Him.

  74. But He put them all outside,

  75. And He took the child's father and mother and those who were with Him

  76. and went in with the child, where the child was.

  77. Taking her by the hand,

  78. He said to her,

  79. Talitha com,

  80. which means,

  81. Little girl, I say to you,

  82. Arise.

  83. And immediately,

  84. the girl got up

  85. and began walking,

  86. for she was 12 years of age.

  87. And they were immediately overcome with amazement,

  88. and He strictly told them

  89. that no one should know this

  90. and told them to give her something to eat.

  91. Now, I just want to admit this morning

  92. that I have a hard time waiting.

  93. Waiting is difficult in everyday things,

  94. but it is much harder

  95. when it's not about inconvenience,

  96. but about crisis.

  97. I mean, it's really tough

  98. when your loved ones are hurting,

  99. when your loved ones are struggling,

  100. when your loved ones are dying.

  101. Hope while waiting

  102. can be the hardest kind of hope.

  103. However, I want you to see

  104. what Jesus does

  105. in the midst of those moments.

  106. The first thing I notice

  107. is that Jesus calms.

  108. Now, He's crossed over

  109. six miles across these waters,

  110. and He's welcomed

  111. by a bunch of hurting,

  112. wanting people.

  113. The needs, I am sure,

  114. are varied.

  115. There are some there

  116. who just want attention.

  117. Jesus is getting a lot of attention,

  118. and they want attention from Jesus.

  119. And then there are others

  120. who are just wanting to lay eyes

  121. on a miracle man

  122. because they've heard of what He can do.

  123. Whether they've got word or not

  124. about this particular miracle,

  125. they've got wind

  126. of what He's been able to do,

  127. even among them.

  128. And then some are there

  129. because they desperately

  130. are needing help.

  131. And one of them

  132. that desperately needs help

  133. approaches Jesus.

  134. His name is Jairus,

  135. and Jairus is described

  136. as a ruler of the synagogue.

  137. Now, let me explain

  138. what that means.

  139. They had the temple

  140. in Jerusalem.

  141. And Jewish males

  142. were to go to the temple,

  143. if possible,

  144. three times a year.

  145. They were to go at Passover.

  146. Passover was a celebration

  147. of commemoration

  148. of the deliverance

  149. of the people

  150. from the Egyptians.

  151. It's recorded in Exodus chapter 12,

    Exodus 12 chapter mention

  152. and they had a celebration

  153. every year

  154. to celebrate

  155. what God did for them

  156. when He released them

  157. from the Egyptians.

  158. That is in,

  159. that's called Passover.

  160. And everybody was expected

  161. to be there for that.

  162. And then there was Pentecost.

  163. Pentecost is 50,

  164. it actually means 50,

  165. and it's 50 days

  166. after Passover,

  167. and Pentecost

  168. was a day

  169. to celebrate

  170. the harvest.

  171. It was when

  172. the wheat harvest

  173. came in.

  174. It was also a celebration

  175. of the giving of the law,

  176. and you were expected

  177. to be at the temple

  178. for Pentecost.

  179. And then there was

  180. the Feast of Tabernacles,

  181. or what's also called

  182. the Feast of Booths.

  183. We would call it

  184. the Feast of Tents,

  185. because that's what

  186. a booth was,

  187. a canvas and stick

  188. held together hut

  189. that they lived in

  190. as they lived in the desert

  191. for 40 years.

  192. They'd move that booth

  193. around and live in it.

  194. So the Festival

  195. of Tabernacles,

  196. which is a temporary shelter,

  197. or the Festival of Booths

  198. were a time

  199. when they would come back

  200. to Jerusalem

  201. and live in a booth

  202. or live in a tent

  203. for seven days.

  204. At the end of those seven days,

  205. they would have a great

  206. sacred celebration

  207. on the eighth day.

  208. Then they'd go back home.

  209. And if you go to Jerusalem

  210. today and you see

  211. the Temple Mount,

  212. where the Dome of the Rock

  213. is now,

  214. you're standing beside

  215. the Jezreel Valley.

  216. And between,

  217. and the Jezreel Valley

  218. goes deep down,

  219. comes back up,

  220. and the Mount of Olives

  221. is on the other side.

  222. And both sides

  223. of that valley

  224. are filled with,

  225. it's a cemetery,

  226. just a huge cemetery

  227. where Jews have strived

  228. to be buried

  229. as close as they can

  230. to the Temple Mount.

  231. And,

  232. but in the first century,

  233. all those graves

  234. weren't there.

  235. There were a few

  236. commemorative graves,

  237. Absalom's pillars there.

  238. And so there were

  239. a few of those,

  240. but those,

  241. that area would have been

  242. covered with booths

  243. during that week.

  244. Every rooftop

  245. would have a booth on it.

  246. Every courtyard

  247. would have a booth on it.

  248. They would find

  249. any place they could.

  250. It was almost like

  251. a big tailgate party,

  252. but for sacred reasons.

  253. And there's a lot

  254. that's not sacred

  255. about tailgate parties

  256. sometimes.

  257. But anyway,

  258. that's basically

  259. what it was like.

  260. And so they were expected,

  261. males were expected,

  262. if they could,

  263. to be at the temple

  264. three times a year

  265. for that.

  266. By the way,

  267. there are Southern Baptists

  268. that follow somewhat

  269. like that pattern.

  270. And they come

  271. at Christmas

  272. and Easter

  273. whether they need to

  274. every year.

  275. Preachers call them

  276. Christers.

  277. And they always wonder

  278. why the preacher

  279. only preaches

  280. on the birth of Christ

  281. and the death

  282. and resurrection of Christ.

  283. He can't move on

  284. to anything else.

  285. They wonder that.

  286. Man, you're here

  287. in February.

  288. Congratulations.

  289. Congratulations.

  290. But when they did not

  291. go to the temple

  292. those three times,

  293. they went to the synagogue

  294. every Sabbath.

  295. And as I've told you before,

  296. every town that had

  297. more than 12 Jewish males

  298. had a synagogue.

  299. And they would meet

  300. in that synagogue

  301. and that was the place

  302. where they were fed spiritually.

  303. The temple was the place

  304. for major feasts,

  305. priestly matters,

  306. atoning sacrifices.

  307. The synagogue was the place

  308. of worship

  309. on a regular basis.

  310. And those synagogues

  311. had rulers.

  312. The rulers

  313. were a board of men

  314. that made sure

  315. the synagogue

  316. was managed well.

  317. They were men

  318. that took care

  319. of the scrolls.

  320. They were men

  321. that cared

  322. for the facility.

  323. They were those

  324. that made sure

  325. that everything

  326. went on schedule.

  327. They supervised

  328. the readers

  329. and the teachers.

  330. Typically,

  331. the rulers

  332. of the synagogue

  333. did not do

  334. the teaching

  335. or the reading

  336. of the word.

  337. But they would

  338. supervise those areas.

  339. And I tried

  340. to find

  341. a contemporary example

  342. of what that position

  343. is.

  344. But quite honestly,

  345. as I look at our church,

  346. it is so varied

  347. and we have so many people

  348. in so many different spots

  349. doing so many different things

  350. that's hard to say.

  351. When I got here

  352. this morning,

  353. the welcome board

  354. that normally

  355. is on the sidewalk

  356. out here

  357. was laying down.

  358. And as I walked in,

  359. one of the security guys

  360. was with me

  361. and he picked it up

  362. and put it up.

  363. And the minute

  364. we walked inside,

  365. it blew back down.

  366. And another security guy

  367. came on the scene

  368. and picked it up

  369. and put it up.

  370. And the minute he did,

  371. it blew back down.

  372. Another guy came up

  373. about that time

  374. and set it up.

  375. It was just fun

  376. standing inside

  377. watching it,

  378. you know.

  379. just one right

  380. after another

  381. trying their best

  382. thinking that they

  383. have the magic touch.

  384. I think they finally

  385. just removed it.

  386. I walked in here

  387. and there was somebody

  388. opening these shutters.

  389. If I had walked

  390. to the coffee bar,

  391. there's people

  392. down there working.

  393. There were people

  394. making sure that people

  395. were welcomed

  396. when they would come here.

  397. We had tech guys

  398. working with

  399. the musical staff

  400. to make sure

  401. that everything was,

  402. there were so many

  403. working pieces.

  404. Your children

  405. are invested

  406. to our ministry

  407. as we speak right now.

  408. There are so many

  409. different people

  410. that make sure

  411. things are taken care of.

  412. And I am very appreciative

  413. and I don't like

  414. naming names

  415. because I'll leave

  416. somebody out.

  417. So just do it

  418. for the Lord

  419. and thank you

  420. for what you do.

  421. And if you're not

  422. doing anything,

  423. get busy doing something.

  424. There's places to serve.

  425. That's a whole other sermon.

  426. But anyway,

  427. but the guys

  428. that watched over

  429. all of that

  430. were the rulers

  431. of the synagogue.

  432. And not from that position,

  433. but they were often

  434. very wealthy people,

  435. highly regarded

  436. and very important.

  437. I said all that

  438. to say that

  439. when Jairus walked up,

  440. people would have

  441. got out of his way

  442. because he's the one

  443. that makes sure

  444. everything's taken care

  445. of for us.

  446. And he approached Jesus

  447. and it must have

  448. took him a lot

  449. to approach Jesus

  450. because Jesus

  451. was not highly esteemed

  452. by Jewish leaders.

  453. And now,

  454. Jairus,

  455. I feel sure

  456. being ruler

  457. of a local synagogue,

  458. was not part

  459. of the Sanhedrin,

  460. but because

  461. the Sanhedrin

  462. oversaw

  463. the synagogues,

  464. he would have had

  465. a lot of interaction

  466. with the heads

  467. of Jewish religion

  468. who were pursuing Christ.

  469. And so for Jairus

  470. to come

  471. and approach Christ

  472. with his great need

  473. had to take a lot.

  474. But when your kid's sick,

  475. you'll do whatever

  476. you have to do

  477. to try to fix the problem.

  478. It says that not only

  479. did he approach Christ,

  480. but it said he fell

  481. at his feet,

  482. that term there

  483. speaks of a worshipful fall,

  484. as if he was kissing

  485. the feet of Jesus.

  486. He laid before him.

  487. And by the time

  488. that Jesus

  489. had healed the woman,

  490. they were getting word back

  491. that Jairus'

  492. dying daughter

  493. was dead.

  494. And upon Jairus

  495. hearing the word

  496. that his daughter

  497. had died,

  498. he also heard

  499. Jesus say,

  500. do not fear,

  501. only believe.

  502. So even in the midst

  503. of the crisis,

  504. Jesus speaks words

  505. of comfort

  506. that had to be effective.

  507. And I love how

  508. even when the problem

  509. is not yet solved,

  510. even when the problem

  511. may not even be solved,

  512. Jesus has a way

  513. to calm us.

  514. He says the right things

  515. through the powerful presence

  516. of the Holy Spirit

  517. and through his word

  518. into our lives.

  519. And it just teaches us

  520. that we can trust him

  521. even when we don't understand.

  522. Jesus calms.

  523. Not only does he calm,

  524. but he also corrects.

  525. I want you to notice this.

  526. Christ proceeds

  527. to take the inner three,

  528. that's Peter,

  529. James,

  530. and John

  531. with him

  532. into the house

  533. of Jairus.

  534. Peter,

  535. James,

  536. and John

  537. will also be the ones

  538. that he takes up

  539. on the Mount

  540. of Transfiguration.

  541. Peter,

  542. James,

  543. and John

  544. will also be the one

  545. that he takes deeper

  546. into the Garden

  547. of Gethsemane

  548. on the night

  549. of his arrest.

  550. They were the obvious

  551. leaders of the apostles.

  552. And as they get

  553. to the house,

  554. there is quite a commotion.

  555. Now notice that

  556. this is obvious

  557. because a young lady

  558. has died,

  559. people are going

  560. to be very upset.

  561. Of course they are.

  562. But there's a lot

  563. more going on here

  564. than just the loss

  565. of a life.

  566. For one,

  567. professional mourners

  568. would come

  569. and they would loudly

  570. weep on behalf

  571. of the dead.

  572. Flutists would come

  573. and they would show up

  574. and they would begin

  575. to play

  576. while people

  577. sang dirges

  578. that were deadly

  579. and sorrowful.

  580. The thought was

  581. that it would help

  582. the family

  583. better express themselves

  584. without feeling embarrassed

  585. with their mourning.

  586. It was actually expected

  587. that even the poor,

  588. rabbinical law,

  589. not biblical law,

  590. but that that's added to it,

  591. rabbinical law

  592. stated that even the poor

  593. should have at least

  594. two flutes

  595. and one wailing woman.

  596. That's what it says.

  597. You know,

  598. you've got to mourn the dead.

  599. You've got to let people know.

  600. Therefore,

  601. when word got out,

  602. those mourners

  603. would come lurking.

  604. Now,

  605. I don't mean to be

  606. gross here,

  607. but when somebody dies

  608. in that atmosphere,

  609. if you're going to mourn

  610. the body,

  611. you better hurry

  612. because there's a change

  613. that's going to take place

  614. in that body.

  615. And so,

  616. when they got word

  617. that Jerish's daughter

  618. was dying,

  619. typically,

  620. those mourners

  621. would be waiting outside

  622. like a bunch of vultures

  623. waiting for the dead

  624. so they could toot their flute

  625. and call out their whale.

  626. There's a lot of commotion.

  627. Mourners were expected

  628. to beat their breasts.

  629. Mourners were expected

  630. to tear at their hair.

  631. They were expected

  632. to tear their tunic.

  633. If you were close relatives,

  634. you were to tear it

  635. in the chest.

  636. And you could sew it up

  637. loosely as long as it still

  638. looks like it's been torn,

  639. but you have to wear it

  640. for 30 days

  641. to show that you're mourning.

  642. I mean,

  643. it was an elaborate process.

  644. And it was that kind

  645. of atmosphere

  646. that Christ walked into.

  647. And verse 39 says,

  648. and when he entered,

  649. he said to them,

  650. why are you making

  651. a commotion and weeping?

  652. The child's not dead,

  653. but sleeping.

  654. And they laughed at him.

  655. Now,

  656. once you understand,

  657. when Jesus says

  658. the child is sleeping,

  659. he's not talking about

  660. a soul sleep here.

  661. What he's saying is,

  662. it's going to be easier

  663. for me to rouse this child

  664. than it is your child

  665. on a school day

  666. when you try to get them

  667. up to go to school.

  668. It's going to be

  669. nothing for him.

  670. This state is only

  671. temporary.

  672. They had misunderstood

  673. and Jesus corrects them.

  674. What they think

  675. is permanent

  676. is only temporary.

  677. What they think

  678. can't be changed

  679. will be changed.

  680. What they thought

  681. was dead and gone

  682. would be alive and well.

  683. And it's the kind

  684. of correction

  685. that Jesus makes

  686. in people's lives.

  687. He's much greater

  688. than our anticipations.

  689. And he'll correct us

  690. when he needs to.

  691. Not only does he correct,

  692. but he also answers.

  693. Jesus answers.

  694. He sent them out

  695. and took the parents

  696. and went in

  697. and took the girl

  698. by the hand

  699. and spoke in a language

  700. that he normally spoke

  701. which was Aramaic.

  702. And Mark

  703. in one of those few times

  704. in the Gospel of Mark,

  705. I believe four times,

  706. he uses the original language

  707. of Aramaic

  708. to state what Jesus said

  709. to that little girl.

  710. and he told her to rise

  711. and immediately she did.

  712. There was no CPR.

  713. He didn't yell at her.

  714. He didn't slap her.

  715. He just took her by the hand

  716. and she arose.

  717. And there was no need

  718. for recovery.

  719. She didn't start PT and OT.

  720. She walked across the room

  721. rehabilitated.

  722. Now,

  723. why does Mark

  724. use the original language here?

  725. Well,

  726. I want you to remember

  727. that Mark

  728. was very young

  729. when this happened.

  730. He was probably

  731. about the age

  732. of this 12-year-old.

  733. And I'll say girl,

  734. but at 12 years old

  735. in that culture,

  736. she was on

  737. the verge

  738. of womanhood

  739. and their thoughts.

  740. Mark was about that age.

  741. He wasn't there.

  742. But he got his information

  743. about this

  744. and he got his information

  745. about what we have

  746. in the Gospel of Mark

  747. from Peter.

  748. He penned it

  749. based on Peter's testimony

  750. and Peter was there

  751. and Peter told him

  752. what Jesus said.

  753. And in this event,

  754. the words,

  755. the touch,

  756. the power,

  757. the opening of the eyes,

  758. the answered prayer,

  759. all of it

  760. was so burned

  761. upon the mind

  762. of Peter.

  763. It was so stamped

  764. upon his conscience

  765. that he quoted it

  766. just like he saw it.

  767. He could hear

  768. the words again.

  769. Talitha kum.

  770. Talitha kum.

  771. When that young lady

  772. walked across that room,

  773. they were absolutely amazed.

  774. And Jesus told them

  775. not to talk about it.

  776. Now,

  777. that tickles me

  778. because the marvel

  779. of this miracle

  780. is not going to be held long.

  781. It's not going to be

  782. secret long.

  783. I mean,

  784. the minute she walks

  785. out the door

  786. and is on the street,

  787. somebody's going to say,

  788. wait a minute,

  789. I thought she died.

  790. It's not going to be long.

  791. But he told them

  792. to get her something

  793. to eat.

  794. Now,

  795. we have no idea

  796. how long her terminal

  797. illness had kept her

  798. from eating.

  799. But they're in shock

  800. looking at

  801. their little girl

  802. who had died

  803. walking around

  804. and Jesus sees them

  805. and says,

  806. would you get her

  807. something to eat?

  808. Would you get her

  809. something to eat?

  810. so what does all that mean for us

  811. why is it here

  812. recorded in scripture

  813. does it just show the miracle of the touch of Jesus

  814. well it does no doubt about that

  815. but I will tell you that all the sick will not be made well

  816. they wasn't in the first century

  817. and all the dying will not be risen up in this life

  818. it's not going to happen

  819. even if we do see miraculous escape from death

  820. it's not going to be in this manner

  821. it's not so what does this mean for us

  822. what it means for us is his delay does not mean that he's failed

  823. that his delay does not mean that he's not true

  824. his delay does mean that he has greater things in store

  825. Jairus suffered a horrible delay

  826. and those that saw Jesus as he approached

  827. the girl that had died

  828. ridiculed him

  829. they laughed at him

  830. they did not believe him

  831. one of the reasons why it's recorded in the gospel of Mark

  832. the way it is

  833. is because it is a foreshadowing

  834. of another time

  835. when they would not believe him

  836. and another time

  837. when they would not ridicule him

  838. there was a worse delay that was coming in the future

  839. there was a Friday

  840. when the Lord died

  841. and to some

  842. it appeared that he had failed

  843. it seemed as if what he said was not true

  844. but in reality

  845. he had greater things in store

  846. and when Saturday came

  847. heaven was silent

  848. and the tomb was sealed

  849. shut

  850. and there were people waiting

  851. wondering

  852. what in the world have we put our faith in

  853. nothing happened that day

  854. and it was a horrible

  855. delay

  856. surely he's failed

  857. did anything he say

  858. was it even true

  859. and sometimes in our lives

  860. when the tomb's been sealed

  861. and the delay's been long

  862. we wonder where's God in all this

  863. is he who he proclaims to be

  864. can I really put my faith in him

  865. and then Sunday morning comes

  866. and without anyone's help

  867. Christ rises from the grave

  868. and those that had ridiculed him

  869. were silent

  870. and those who had hoped in him

  871. was now fulfilled

  872. fulfilled

  873. and I will tell you

  874. that those who put their hope

  875. in Christ

  876. will always be fulfilled

  877. it may not feel like it today

  878. and it may not feel like it tomorrow

  879. and I can't tell you

  880. when your answer is going to come

  881. but I can tell you

  882. what the answer is

  883. the answer is Jesus

  884. and you can put your faith

  885. and hope in him

  886. and trust him

  887. even when there's no way in the world

  888. you understand

  889. what is happening

  890. waiting hope

  891. hope

  892. is the toughest hope

  893. but if that waiting hope

  894. is in Christ

  895. it'll be fulfilled

  896. it's not gonna be on my schedule

  897. it's probably not gonna be

  898. the way I designed it to be

  899. but it really ain't about me

  900. and I hate to be the one

  901. to break it to you

  902. it really ain't about you

  903. it's about him

  904. we can put our hope

  905. and our faith

  906. in him

  907. so I wanna ask you this morning

  908. have you ever done that

  909. have you ever put the hope of your life

  910. in Christ

  911. scripture tells us what that means

  912. is that we acknowledge

  913. that we've sinned against him

  914. that we've done wrong

  915. and that we need a savior

  916. and that we ask him

  917. to not only forgive us

  918. but I want you to hear me

  919. we surrender our lives

  920. to follow his will

  921. and his way

  922. that from this day forward

  923. I'm no longer in charge

  924. he's in charge

  925. I didn't say

  926. that we raise our hand

  927. during a vacation Bible school

  928. when nobody's looking

  929. and repeat a prayer

  930. after somebody

  931. it's not what I said

  932. I think there's been

  933. a lot of confusion

  934. along the way in life

  935. from easy believism

  936. along the way

  937. and a lot of people

  938. have done a lot of things

  939. they never meant

  940. and they think they're okay

  941. that's not putting your hope in Christ

  942. have you ever

  943. surrendered your life to Christ

  944. and put your hope in him

  945. if you never have

  946. I wanna tell you

  947. today's the day of salvation

  948. he'll take you where you are

  949. in your circumstances

  950. and he'll change you

  951. and begin to mold you

  952. and make you to be

  953. what he'd have you to be

  954. you just have to put your hope in him

  955. and if you've done that privately

  956. but you've never

  957. effectively done that publicly

  958. and never told anybody else

  959. what you've done

  960. I'm gonna tell you

  961. private faith is no faith at all

  962. quite honestly

  963. based on scripture

  964. Jesus tells us

  965. not to be ashamed of him

  966. before others

  967. and by his example

  968. and by his commission

  969. he shows us

  970. the first step

  971. to follow

  972. after our salvation

  973. is baptism

  974. and if you've never been

  975. baptized as a believer

  976. I'm gonna tell you

  977. it can cause a great hindrance

  978. in your life

  979. and your faith

  980. and trusting in him

  981. if you've disobeyed him

  982. in that step

  983. and so if that's never happened

  984. to you

  985. I encourage you to come

  986. maybe you're here

  987. and God's leading you

  988. to First Baptist Church

  989. you feel like God's leading you

  990. to be a part of this worship

  991. and if he is

  992. I encourage you to come

  993. I'd love to guide you

  994. in that process

  995. what that means

  996. but I know

  997. there's a lot more people here

  998. this morning

  999. that have weighty matters

  1000. in their life

  1001. and struggle

  1002. with putting their hope

  1003. in Christ

  1004. in the midst

  1005. of the weight

1006. I'm just gonna tell you

  1007. you can

  1008. he's worthy of it

  1009. you lay it down

  1010. before him

  1011. I'm not telling you

  1012. you'll understand

  1013. all the way

  1014. I'm not telling you

  1015. you'll understand

  1016. at all

  1017. this side of eternity

1018. I will not tell you that

1019. but I will tell you

1020. that you can put your hope

  1021. in Christ

  1022. and trust him

  1023. and so whatever

  1024. that burden is

  1025. you can do that

  1026. where you stand

  1027. in just a moment

  1028. you can do it

  1029. at this altar

  1030. you can do it

1031. with me praying for you

  1032. and with you

  1033. but whatever it is

  1034. trust him

  1035. even in the delays

  1036. even in the wait

  1037. put your hope

  1038. in Christ

  1039. heavenly father

  1040. help us today

  1041. to simply obey you

  1042. as you speak

1043. to our hearts and lives

  1044. oh God I pray

  1045. in Jesus name

  1046. amen
