  1. Thank you so much for sharing.

  2. If you have your Bibles, I want to turn to Matthew chapter 8.

    Matthew 8 chapter mention

  3. !

  4. I just often call that the trial sermon, and I told you at the time that I was not on trial.

  5. I hadn't even been arrested.

  6. And then I preached on Mark chapter 6, among other passages, and I want to return to that today.

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  7. Now, I will tell you, I'm not starting over at four years of sermons, okay?

  8. It's not the case.

  9. We're preaching through the book of Mark after we took an excursion during Easter.

  10. And as we approached this passage, I couldn't help but think about another passage.

  11. These two passages are two of the most startling passages that I've ever come across.

  12. They are two passages that stump me.

  13. It's found in Matthew chapter 8, beginning in verse 5, and it says this.

    Matthew 8 chapter mention

  14. When he had entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to Christ, appealing to him,

  15. Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, suffering terribly.

  16. And he said to him, I will come and heal him.

  17. But the centurion replied, Lord, I'm not worthy to have you come under my roof,

  18. for I only say the word, and my servant will be healed.

  19. For I too am a man under authority, with soldiers under me.

  20. And I say to one, go, and he goes, and the other come, and he comes.

  21. And to my servant, do this, and he does that.

  22. When Jesus heard this, he marveled and said to those who followed him,

  23. truly I tell you, there is no one in Israel, with no one in Israel have I found such faith.

  24. Did you catch it?

  25. Jesus was amazed.

  26. It says he marveled at the man's faith.

  27. Now, Jesus was limitless.

  28. He knew all things and could do all things.

  29. The only limits that he had, he put upon himself,

  30. and he only had them while he lived in the flesh on the earth.

  31. Philippians 2, verse 6-8 gives us a hint of that,

    Philippians 2:6–8

  32. when it says, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God,

  33. a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself by taking the form of a servant,

  34. being born in the likeness of men, and being found in human form.

  35. He humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death,

  36. even death on the cross.

  37. I don't know what all he gave up when he came in the flesh, in human form,

  38. and whoever tells you that they do completely understand that,

  39. either lies to you or is ignorant enough to think they know.

  40. The reality is, it is beyond us.

  41. But I would have thought that a man's faith would not have marveled him.

  42. But it did.

  43. So what amazed Jesus?

  44. I'll tell you what amazed Jesus.

  45. It was an abundance of unexpected faith.

  46. The man showed amazing faith.

  47. And he was not a man who was expected to show amazing faith.

  48. He was a centurion.

  49. A centurion was a high-ranked official,

  50. an officer in the Roman army.

  51. He led a century of men, usually between 80 and 100 men,

  52. in a company of soldiers.

  53. They were sharp men.

  54. They were notables of the community.

  55. They were known for their deliberation.

  56. They were known for their consistency.

  57. They were known for their strength.

  58. They were known as being battle-tested.

  59. They were known as being experienced.

  60. We see a presence of the centurions sprinkle throughout the New Testament.

  61. Here, this one had watched Jesus.

  62. and he had seen the power of Christ

  63. and he had now put his faith in Christ.

  64. There was another centurion

  65. that stood at the foot of the cross of Christ.

  66. He oversaw the death of Christ

  67. only to utter in the end

  68. in Mark chapter 15 verse 39

    Mark 15:39

  69. truly this man looking at Christ

  70. was the Son of God.

  71. In the book of Acts we find Cornelius.

  72. Cornelius is the first Gentile convert

  73. and interestingly enough he is also a centurion.

  74. Paul had a centurion at his side

  75. through many of his travels

  76. as he traveled from prison to prison

  77. having a centurion beside him many times.

  78. The status of a centurion made for an impressive resume

  79. but it also made for a Gentile

  80. who was an outsider.

  81. So what you have is a Gentile outsider

  82. working for the Roman government.

  83. That man was not expected to respond to Christ

  84. in a positive way.

  85. I mean think about this.

  86. Jesus was a Jew focused on saving

  87. and training Jews to reach the rest of the world

  88. for the kingdom of God.

  89. But those Jews that represented the kingdom of God

  90. to the people of that day

  91. they're the ones that tried to kill Christ.

  92. They're the ones that did not follow him.

  93. Upon arranging for his execution

  94. they built new and unheard of relationships

  95. with the Romans to have him executed.

  96. Yet here he is in fact

  97. a commander of the opposing army of another race

  98. that showed the greatest step of faith

  99. in all of the land.

  100. And Jesus marveled.

  101. He was astonished.

  102. He was astonished.

  103. At the belief of one

  104. that was not even expected to be listening.

  105. Not even expected to be watching.

  106. And then we look at Mark chapter 6.

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  107. Mark chapter 6 verse 1 through 6 says this.

    Mark 6:1–6

  108. Jesus went away from there

  109. and came to his hometown

  110. and his disciples followed him.

  111. And on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue

  112. and many who heard him were astonished saying

  113. where does this man get these things?

  114. What is the wisdom given to him?

  115. How are such mighty works done by his hands?

  116. Is not this carpenter the son of Mary

  117. and brother of James and Joseph

  118. and Judas and Simon

  119. and are not his sisters here with us?

  120. And they took offense at him.

  121. And Jesus said to them

  122. a prophet's not without honor

  123. except in his hometown

  124. and among his relatives

  125. and in his own household.

  126. And he could do no mighty work there

  127. except that he laid his hands

  128. on a few sick people and healed them.

  129. And he marveled

  130. because of their unbelief

  131. and he went about among the villages

  132. teaching.

  133. What amazes Jesus in this circumstance?

  134. An absence of expected faith.

  135. He was preaching in his hometown

  136. among those that knew him best

  137. yet they did not respond.

  138. Now we're not talking about

  139. some wild child

  140. that's finally come home

  141. and now he'll come back

  142. and let's see what he's made of.

  143. Not at all.

  144. The reality is

  145. this is Jesus.

  146. He didn't have wild days.

  147. He didn't involve himself

  148. in the debaucheries of the day.

  149. Christ was sinless.

  150. He was born into common means.

  151. He was born to a common family.

  152. But he was 100% God

  153. and at the same time

  154. 100% man.

  155. His ministry did not start

  156. until he came out of a desert

  157. of temptation

  158. and he came out of it

  159. as a sinless man.

  160. His testimony

  161. preceded his ministry.

  162. Yet the very people

  163. that he had come from

  164. the very people

  165. that he was sent

  166. to train and prepare

  167. the people

  168. that you know

  169. will believe in him.

  170. The expected people.

  171. His own people

  172. failed to recognize

  173. his power and might.

  174. They failed to recognize

  175. who he really was

  176. and he was amazed.

  177. Now I want you to notice

  178. what this means

  179. because verse 5

  180. makes this clear.

  181. people's lives

  182. were not impacted

  183. by Christ

  184. as they could have been

  185. because the very people

  186. that should have been

  187. his support

  188. did not believe him.

  189. Those who

  190. really knew him.

  191. That's amazing.

  192. I wonder how we amazed

  193. what do we do

  194. that amazes Jesus?

  195. Now

  196. I doubt we surprise him.

  197. As a matter of fact

  198. we don't surprise him.

  199. He knows us.

  200. Nothing throws him off.

  201. He knows our heart.

  202. The frailness though

  203. of humanity

  204. in the incarnate Christ

  205. has been shed.

  206. Jesus is all knowing.

  207. He's ever present.

  208. He's all powerful Lord.

  209. He sits at the right hand

  210. of the Father

  211. praying for us.

  212. And he knows

  213. how to pray for us

  214. because he knows us.

  215. He knows how to pray for us

  216. when we utter

  217. our ramblings.

  218. When we skirt around

  219. the real issues

  220. of our life.

  221. when we share

  222. our grocery list

  223. of wants

  224. and wishes

  225. to an almighty God

  226. that sees

  227. into us

  228. and sees

  229. through us

  230. the whole time

  231. while we're trying

  232. to convince him

  233. that we are of one

  234. heart and mind

  235. with his will.

  236. He knows all that.

  237. But aren't we still amazing?

  238. How we look past

  239. the work that he's done

  240. in his word

  241. the work that he's done

  242. through his word

  243. the work that he's done

  244. through our lives

  245. the work that he's done

  246. in our lives

  247. the work that

  248. that he's working

  249. in us

  250. and through us

  251. and yet we're still

  252. afraid to hand him

  253. the reins of our life.

  254. It isn't amazing

  255. that we still worry

  256. we still do the very things

  257. that he tells us

  258. not to do

  259. we worry about things

  260. we worry about stuff

  261. we worry about mammon

  262. that's a good

  263. King James Version

  264. word right there

  265. mammon

  266. you know what mammon is?

  267. Mammon's that stuff

  268. it's your stuff

  269. you know

  270. you may not have much

  271. but it's your stuff

  272. don't mess with my stuff

  273. matter of fact

  274. some of that mammon

  275. we've made

  276. tremendous sacrifice for

  277. they never satisfy

  278. we want a little more

  279. a little bigger

  280. a little better

  281. a little newer

  282. he tells us

  283. to be anxious

  284. for nothing

  285. but yet a doctor

  286. tells us

  287. he wants to run a test

  288. and sheer panic

  289. invades our lives

  290. he tells us

  291. to seek him first

  292. and if we're

  293. if most of us

  294. are honest

  295. the agenda of God

  296. in our lives

  297. sometimes comes

  298. second place

  299. maybe third place

  300. maybe

  301. we won't go there

  302. the King of Kings

  303. and the Lord of Lords

  304. comes in the flesh

  305. to live among us

  306. takes upon himself

  307. our frailties

  308. yet passes

  309. every tempting test

  310. giving every trial

  311. to the Father

  312. dying a sinner's death

  313. so that we would not

  314. have to

  315. was buried in a barred tomb

  316. because you don't need

  317. to buy something

  318. that you're only going to use

  319. for a few days

  320. and later he arose

  321. he walked among us

  322. for 40 days

  323. and ascended

  324. to the right hand

  325. of the Father

  326. to build us

  327. a place in heaven

  328. to make intercession

  329. on our behalf

  330. to wait until the Father

  331. says go

  332. and the trumpet blows

  333. and he comes

  334. to take us home

  335. isn't it amazing

  336. even with all that

  337. that our daily lives

  338. often do not reflect

  339. the change

  340. that's taken place

  341. we must amaze

  342. Jesus still today

  343. no I don't think

  344. we catch him off guard

  345. I don't think

  346. we catch him by surprise

  347. he saw it coming

  348. all the time

  349. but surely he marvels

  350. at the missed opportunities

  351. that we walk away from

  352. don't you think

  353. he marvels

  354. at the people

  355. that he places

  356. in our path

  357. that we walk by

  358. don't you think

  359. he marvels

  360. at the way

  361. he always makes

  362. a way out

  363. when we're tempted

  364. 1 Corinthians 10

  365. 13 promises us that

  366. and yet

  367. we fail

  368. and we fall

  369. right back

  370. into the same

  371. sinful patterns

  372. time and time again

  373. don't you think

  374. he marvels

  375. that he's given us

  376. all that we'll ever need

  377. yet instead of

  378. tapping into the power

  379. that is within us

  380. by the Holy Spirit

  381. of God

  382. we reach for

  383. everything around

  384. us looking

  385. for something

  386. to lean on

  387. it's amazing

  388. folks

  389. don't you marvel

  390. over that

  391. don't it

  392. amaze you

  393. I mean

  394. what do you think

  395. God would do

  396. how do you think

  397. he would bless

  398. if we decided

  399. today

  400. to live our lives

  401. in a way

  402. that

  403. will amaze

  404. him

  405. amaze him

  406. that

  407. we

  408. that

  409. we

  410. dedicate ourselves to the Word of God.

  411. Amaze Him in the way that we dedicate ourselves to prayer.

  412. Amaze Him in the way that we trust Him in all that we do.

  413. Amaze Him in the way that we forsake this world and follow Him

  414. instead of forsaking Him and following the world.

  415. Amaze Him in the way that we lean on Him daily.

  416. Amaze Him in the way that we truly believe that He's everything that we've got.

  417. He's the only hope that we've got.

  418. Amaze Him in the way that we believe that He saves all who will believe.

  419. Amaze Him in the way that we rest in the guidance that He gives us when we listen.

  420. To amaze Him with the way we believe He gives peace

  421. for everyone who will find their rest in Him.

  422. I don't know about you.

  423. But I want to amaze Jesus.

  424. Not with the things that I fail to believe.

  425. But the way I'm determined to believe that God's up to something pretty special.

  426. Because His grace is amazing.

  427. I said His grace is amazing.

  428. Why don't our lives amazing?

  429. The question is, are we willing to live an amazing life for Jesus today?

  430. To just live for the Lord Jesus in an amazing fashion.

  431. I'm going to tell you, this whole dark world needs that kind of light.

  432. And God's called us to be that kind of light.

  433. Not only called us now,

  434. He enabled us by the Spirit of God

  435. to be that for His honor

  436. and for His glory

  437. and for His kingdom.

  438. I don't know if it will be amazing to Him.

  439. But I know one thing.

  440. If we trust Him with everything we've got

  441. and lean on Him completely

  442. and live for Him wholeheartedly,

  443. it would be absolutely amazing.

  444. May we do that.

  445. May we do that.

  446. I'll tell you how it starts.

  447. It starts by surrendering your life to the Lord Jesus.

  448. It starts by asking Him to come into your life

  449. and to forgive you of the sins that have separated you.

  450. And asking Him to cleanse you.

  451. And to make you whole.

  452. And committing your life to live amazing for Him.

  453. Not in your own strength,

  454. but by the power of the strength of God.

  455. The Spirit of God that indwells us.

  456. You've never given your heart and life to the Lord.

  457. Give it to Him.

  458. Today.

  459. Maybe you're here this morning.

  460. You have done that,

  461. but you've never acknowledged that publicly.

  462. You've never been baptized as a believer.

  463. And Jesus, by His commission and by His example,

  464. tells us that the proper way to acknowledge our salvation

  465. is to follow that up with public baptism.

  466. It's a physical representation of what happens to us spiritually.

  467. If you've never done that, I encourage you to come.

  468. We plan to do that in the next few weeks.

  469. And so I encourage you to come.

  470. I told you when I began that

  471. that I preached on these two passages

  472. and a very similar theme

  473. on the first Sunday that I preached in this church.

  474. I remember it.

  475. I had a three-piece suit on with a tie.

  476. Sitting right here.

  477. Taking all of it in.

  478. Trying to figure out what in the world.

  479. What in the world are they getting into?

  480. What in the world am I getting into?

  481. How's all this going to work out?

  482. And I remember

  483. working on that sermon in preparation

  484. for that day

  485. and saying,

  486. God,

  487. if you're not going to do amazing things in that church,

  488. I don't want to go.

  489. I don't want to go.

  490. I could have stayed where I was.

  491. God, if you're going to do something

  492. where we can tell it's been by your hand

  493. and by your direction

  494. and you're going to allow me to get in on a move of God,

  495. then I want to be a part of it.

  496. Lord, let it be amazing.

  497. I can tell you after almost four years,

  498. it's been amazing.

  499. God's been good to us.

  500. He really has.

  501. So if you're a guest here today,

  502. this ain't a sales pitch.

  503. It's true.

  504. God's leading you to be a part of Pickett's First Baptist Church.

  505. I can tell you

  506. that I thank God

  507. if He's leading you,

  508. you need to follow.

  509. It's a blessed body of believers

  510. and we're excited about what God's done.

  511. We're excited about what God's going to do.

  512. It's a good people to be a part of

  513. if God so leads.

  514. Whatever that is,

  515. then there's the rest of us

  516. that in reality there's things in our life

  517. that we just,

  518. it's just not amazing.

  519. It just needs to be changed in our lives

  520. and we need to lay those down before the Lord today.

  521. And you can do that where you stand

  522. as this song is sang

  523. or you can do it at this altar

  524. or you can do it with a pastor praying for you.

  525. I'll always tell you,

  526. I never want you to do more

  527. than what God tells you to do.

  528. But it is always my prayer

  529. that you'll never be satisfied

  530. with doing less

  531. than what God would have you to do.

  532. Just be obedient.

  533. If you need Christ, come.

  534. Let me share Christ with you.

  535. If you need to publicly acknowledge Him, come.

  536. We'll line that up.

  537. God's leading you to this church, you come.

  538. God's leading you to deal with a matter in your life

  539. that you need to lay down before Him.

  540. You come.

  541. You take care of that.

  542. However God leads you to do it,

  543. you take care of that.

  544. Heavenly Father, I love you.

  545. And I thank you, Lord,

  546. for the blessing

  547. that you give us to be your children,

  548. to allow you to lead and guide us, God.

  549. And I'm thankful, Lord,

  550. for how we've seen it

  551. in our midst, dear Father.

  552. And I ask, God,

  553. that you will make us hungry

  554. to be more like you,

  555. to live more for you,

  556. to lay down today

  557. the matters that we need to lay down before you

  558. and to walk out of here

  559. ready to live amazing lives

  560. for the Lord Jesus Christ.

  561. Lead us right now,

  562. oh God, I pray in Jesus' name.

  563. Amen.
