  1. Mark chapter 7, after many miracles, some great teaching, many lives impacted, the critics caught up with Jesus.

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  2. ! Pharisees and scribes had accused him of blasphemy for telling the paralytic that his sins were forgiven.

  3. They had questioned his feasting with tax collectors and sinners and told him that he should be fasting.

  4. They accused him of plucking grain on the Sabbath. That's harvesting in their minds.

  5. They saw him healing on the Sabbath. That is considered work as well.

  6. They even said that he was of the devil because he had power over the demons.

  7. Earlier in Mark chapter 7, they called him defiled. They called him unclean.

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  8. It just keeps coming.

  9. Sometimes you just have to get away.

  10. That's what he does in our passage today.

  11. But yet, not really.

  12. Mark chapter 7, beginning in verse 24, it says,

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  13. And from there, Jesus arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon.

  14. And he entered a house and did not want anyone to know.

  15. Yet he could not be hidden.

  16. But immediately, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard of him and came and fell down at his feet.

  17. Now, the woman was a Gentile, a Seraphonician by birth, and she begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter.

  18. And he said to her, Let the children be fed first.

  19. For it's not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.

  20. And she answered, Yes, Lord.

  21. Get even the dogs under the table, these children.

  22. And he said to her, For this statement you may go your way.

  23. The demon has left your daughter.

  24. And she went home and found the child lying in bed, and the demon gone.

  25. The devil to Tyre is about 40 miles from the area in which Christ had been before.

  26. It moves northward to the Mediterranean coast.

  27. Sidon is about another 20 miles north of that, further into Gentile land.

  28. This is the first time in the recorded ministry of Christ that he has been in this area full of Gentiles.

  29. But they hadn't seen him before.

  30. Word had gone out about him.

  31. Crowds that he fed for the 5,000.

  32. The crowds that surrounded him in the Galilean area.

  33. For people who had traveled from as far as that area to be near him.

  34. Because when he got there, they recognized him.

  35. Word had spread.

  36. Now the question is, why should he go so far from what seemed to be his strategic area of ministry?

  37. Mostly in that Galilean area.

  38. Well, I can give you several reasons why I believe he took this year.

  39. One is, he was tired.

  40. He needed some rest.

  41. He was never alone, and the people had gotten more aggressive to get close to him.

  42. They tried to force him to be king.

  43. You see throughout the Gospels that Jesus loved his time alone.

  44. He loved to be with the Father.

  45. And if you live a busy life, and if you're around people a lot, that does not surprise you.

  46. He was tired.

  47. He also wanted things to cool down.

  48. The religious leaders were back.

  49. They were more critical, and they would soon become more aggressive.

  50. And that had to, he had to, none of that had backed off.

  51. And Jesus didn't back off from his story.

  52. He didn't back off from his mission.

  53. He told them when they were wrong.

  54. He was not scared of them.

  55. However, he needed more time.

  56. I believe that the incarnate Christ came to earth for two reasons.

  57. One very primary reason, the other secondary.

  58. The primary reason Christ came to earth was to live a sinless life,

  59. and to die, shed his blood on the cross for our sins,

  60. and rise again and ascend to heaven and bear a place for us.

  61. That is the redemptive story that Christ came to share with us.

  62. But I believe the other reason he came was to train the twelve,

  63. to train the disciples to carry out his ministry

  64. when he no longer would be physically present with them.

  65. And you see the evidence of that in the book of Acts.

  66. As a matter of fact, the rest of the New Testament

  67. are letters that are written from the time of the book of Acts

  68. when it continued to spread.

  69. And if it wasn't for them,

  70. in planting that vision and that mission within those apostles,

  71. that continue to spread that,

  72. literally in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria,

  73. and the uttermost parts of the earth.

  74. You can see like a rock in a pond with the ripples.

  75. You can see the great commission in the book of Acts

  76. start in Jerusalem in Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  77. spread to Judea, Samaria,

  78. and the uttermost parts.

  79. And thank God he came for that,

  80. because we're the uttermost parts.

  81. So he needed time to train the twelve.

  82. His ministry was only three and a half years.

  83. He needed time to train them,

  84. and he had to pull them away.

  85. Things needed to be cool.

  86. But the third reason I believe he traveled there

  87. is because he also was just living out what he was teaching.

  88. I want to focus on that.

  89. You'll notice in Mark verse 19

  90. that we looked at last week,

  91. it says,

  92. Thus he declared all foods clean.

  93. Foods are a powerful symbol in the New Testament.

  94. As the Gospels broke down this,

  95. as the Apostle Paul put it in Ephesians,

  96. this dividing wall of hostility between the Jews and the Gentiles.

  97. In Acts chapter 10,

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  98. the Lord uses food to explain to Peter

  99. that he was to reach out to the Gentiles,

  100. the heathens,

  101. the world.

  102. In a dream,

  103. Peter saw a blanket

  104. spread out of heaven

  105. with unclean food on it.

  106. He didn't eat such foods,

  107. and so

  108. he said

  109. when God told him to eat,

  110. take, eat,

  111. Peter responded

  112. with the greatest oxymoron

  113. in all of the New Testament.

  114. He said,

  115. Not so,

  116. Lord.

  117. He didn't say no to him,

  118. he called him Lord.

  119. And

  120. he didn't eat unclean animals,

  121. so he wasn't going to eat them.

  122. And the Lord told him

  123. he had made the foods clean to eat.

  124. That was an illustration

  125. to show Peter

  126. that he was to go to the Gentiles.

  127. So Peter went to Cornelius,

  128. a Gentile's house.

  129. He ate with him.

  130. He brought him to Christ.

  131. A bridge was built

  132. there,

  133. and we see the evidence

  134. of that continuing to spread

  135. throughout the rest of

  136. the book of Acts.

  137. However,

  138. Jesus is building

  139. the foundation

  140. of that bridge

  141. that would come

  142. later years

  143. here by going

  144. to the land

  145. of the Gentiles.

  146. And listen to me,

  147. after a conversation

  148. in the previous part

  149. of Mark chapter 7

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  150. about unclean things

  151. and unclean people.

  152. He wanted to get away

  153. and take a break.

  154. However,

  155. when Jesus

  156. entered a house,

  157. he cannot be hidden.

  158. Notice,

  159. he says,

  160. when he went,

  161. he entered a house

  162. and did not want anyone

  163. to know it,

  164. yet he could not be hidden.

  165. Listen,

  166. when Jesus is present,

  167. you can't hide it.

  168. When he's present

  169. in someone's home,

  170. people hung through

  171. the windows

  172. to get a word from you.

  173. And when he's present

  174. in someone's life,

  175. it cannot be hidden.

  176. It should not be hidden.

  177. Not in our lives.

  178. Sometimes people tell me,

  179. well,

  180. pastor,

  181. I believe one's faith

  182. is private.

  183. There's a Greek word

  184. for that,

  185. baloney.

  186. There is no,

  187. that is not

  188. Christian biblical faith

  189. if it's private.

  190. There's nothing private

  191. about it.

  192. Romans 10,

  193. 10,

  194. 9 says,

  195. if you confess

  196. with your mouth

  197. Jesus is Lord,

  198. and it's not talking

  199. about in the privacy

  200. of your home.

  201. It's not talking

  202. about just with the preacher

  203. or just with your parents

  204. or just with your spouse.

  205. You take the context

  206. of that passage,

  207. he's talking about

  208. boldly proclaiming

  209. that Christ is Lord.

  210. There's nothing private

  211. about our faith.

  212. It's real.

  213. And if it's real,

  214. you can't hide it.

  215. But when you really

  216. know Christ

  217. and have a personal

  218. relationship with Him,

  219. He is not just

  220. in your heart.

  221. He's all over your life

  222. and the presence

  223. of Christ cannot be hidden.

  224. The presence of Christ

  225. in a home

  226. cannot be hidden.

  227. And it could not be hidden

  228. in that day

  229. and it still can't be.

  230. And in that atmosphere,

  231. He meets a woman

  232. with a daughter

  233. with an unclean spirit.

  234. That means she had a demon.

  235. If there are categories

  236. of people,

  237. and we tend to categorize people,

  238. I mean, I don't,

  239. and I know you don't,

  240. but I'm talking about

  241. other people.

  242. They do that.

  243. But if there are categories

  244. of people,

  245. this woman would be

  246. obviously not worthy.

  247. I mean,

  248. who is she to ask Christ

  249. for anything?

  250. She's an unclean Gentile.

  251. She's a Seraphonician,

  252. Canaanite woman.

  253. That means she lives

  254. in the most hideous,

  255. pagan,

  256. hardened,

  257. rough people

  258. around her.

  259. Josephus,

  260. the ancient Jewish historian,

  261. said that Tyre

  262. represented the most

  263. bitter enemy

  264. that the Jews had

  265. at the time.

  266. And quite honestly,

  267. nothing's really changed.

  268. That's modern day

  269. Lebanon today.

  270. Constantly fighting.

  271. And in the first century,

  272. it was filled

  273. with the worst kind

  274. of idolatry.

  275. some of the darkest places

  276. on the earth.

  277. Therefore,

  278. she is very unclean,

  279. very unworthy

  280. to approach Jesus.

  281. She has no covenant

  282. standing as an Israelite.

  283. She has demons

  284. in her home,

  285. even in her own daughter.

  286. She has no standing.

  287. She has no leverage here.

  288. She's completely desperate.

  289. She's a mother

  290. pleading for her child.

  291. And a mother's plea

  292. is the most earnest

  293. of any on earth.

  294. mothers fight

  295. for their children.

  296. And Mark tells us

  297. that she fell

  298. at his feet.

  299. Not only does that

  300. show her utmost

  301. respect for him,

  302. but she is pleading

  303. with Christ.

  304. Matthew writes

  305. about this man.

  306. And of course,

  307. Matthew gives us

  308. more details

  309. than Mark does.

  310. Because Mark writes

  311. like a man.

  312. He's in a hurry.

  313. And he gives us,

  314. Matthew gives us

  315. some details

  316. that we need.

  317. Matthew chapter 15

    Matthew 15:22

  318. verse 22 says this,

  319. And behold,

  320. a Canaanite woman

  321. from that region

  322. came out

  323. and was crying,

  324. Have mercy on me,

  325. son of David.

  326. My daughter is severely

  327. oppressed by a demon.

  328. But Jesus

  329. did not answer

  330. her.

  331. And his disciples

  332. came

  333. and begged him

  334. saying,

  335. Send her away.

  336. For she's crying

  337. out after us.

  338. And he answered,

  339. I was sent

  340. only to the

  341. lost children

  342. house of the Lord.

  343. She came

  344. and knelt

  345. before him

  346. and said,

  347. Lord,

  348. help me.

  349. And he said,

  350. Let the children

  351. be.

  352. And she said,

  353. Lord,

  354. help me.

  355. Matthew tells us

  356. how Jesus

  357. responded.

  358. He didn't.

  359. Matthew 23

  360. said he didn't

  361. answer her

  362. one.

  363. Eugene

  364. Peterson

  365. wrote a

  366. paraphrase

  367. of the New

  368. Testament

  369. called

  370. The Message.

  371. And in that

  372. paraphrase,

  373. Peterson says

  374. that Jesus

  375. ignored her.

  376. I believe

  377. Peterson was

  378. wrong.

  379. That's one

  380. of the dangers

  381. that you run

  382. into when you

  383. read a paraphrase

  384. of Scripture.

  385. Because a

  386. paraphrase has

  387. a lot of

  388. somebody's

  389. interpretation.

  390. And I'm not

  391. knocking the

  392. message over

  393. all.

  394. Sometimes it

  395. helps us to

  396. understand passages

  397. better.

  398. But you need to

  399. understand.

  400. It's not a

  401. translation,

  402. it's a

  403. paraphrase.

  404. And here he

  405. made an

  406. interpreted

  407. decision that

  408. I believe

  409. was wrong.

  410. And the

  411. reason why I

  412. think that

  413. partially is

  414. because of

  415. something that

  416. happened to me.

  417. one of the

  418. toughest

  419. assignments that

  420. I ever had

  421. in ministry.

  422. I had a

  423. dear member

  424. of my

  425. church that

  426. was a

  427. well-respected

  428. retired

  429. servant.

  430. I love

  431. judgment.

  432. When I

  433. first went to

  434. that church,

  435. I was

  436. preaching a

  437. prayer meeting

  438. one night on

  439. Matthew 24,

  440. a very tough

  441. controversial

  442. passage.

  443. scripture,

  444. he was

  445. sitting in

  446. the back

  447. at a table

  448. of the

  449. fellowship

  450. hall there.

  451. As I was

  452. finishing up,

  453. he raised

  454. his hand.

  455. And I

  456. was new to

  457. the church.

  458. I wasn't

  459. even honeymoving

  460. in.

  461. They were

  462. just

  463. getting

  464. them.

  465. And he

  466. raised his

  467. hand,

  468. and so I

  469. let him

  470. speak,

  471. and he

  472. asked me

  473. a question.

  474. Now,

  475. to be honest

  476. with you

  477. folks,

  478. I ain't

  479. going to

  480. take

  481. questions

  482. today.

  483. I'm

  484. going to

  485. tell you

  486. everything

  487. I got

  488. in my

  489. bag,

  490. and that's

  491. it.

  492. I ain't

  493. got a

  494. high key.

  495. I ain't

  496. taking

  497. questions.

  498. Didn't plan

  499. on doing

  500. it that

  501. night.

  502. But

  503. I

  504. answered

  505. his

  506. question

  507. to the

  508. best of

  509. my

  510. ability,

  511. and I

  512. moved on.

  513. Nobody

  514. raised his

  515. hand again,

  516. and I

  517. said,

  518. Judge,

  519. this ain't

  520. your

  521. courtroom.

  522. I said

  523. that,

  524. knowing at

  525. the time,

  526. either I'd

  527. be looking

  528. for a job

  529. next day,

  530. or either

  531. be a

  532. judge and

  533. hit it

  534. on.

  535. And I

  536. figured if

  537. he's a

  538. retired

  539. circuit

  540. judge,

  541. he's got

  542. to be

  543. tough enough

  544. to understand

  545. that.

  546. He's one

  547. of the

  548. respect I've

  549. ever met in my

  550. life.

  551. I made

  552. rounds here in

  553. Sunday school

  554. to speak to

  555. folks,

  556. and when I

  557. got into his

  558. class,

  559. I'd sit down

  560. and listen to

  561. him teach.

  562. coach.

  563. He's an

  564. inductive

  565. teacher.

  566. He taught

  567. like a

  568. man who

  569. fights with

  570. a roundhouse

  571. kick.

  572. You don't

  573. see him

  574. coming.

  575. You just

  576. get kicked

  577. in the

  578. back of

  579. the head

  580. all of a

  581. sudden.

  582. That's

  583. the way

  584. he taught.

  585. He'd start

  586. out, and

  587. you'd think,

  588. man, what

  589. is he

  590. talking about?

  591. He didn't

  592. even study.

  593. He don't

  594. know what he's

  595. talking about.

  596. And by

  597. the time

  598. he got

  599. done,

  600. man,

  601. he had

  602. landed

  603. in my

  604. head.

  605. His wife

  606. came to

  607. me one

  608. day, and

  609. she said,

  610. how's he

  611. doing teaching?

  612. Because he's

  613. struggling at

  614. home.

  615. And I

  616. don't want

  617. to do

  618. embarrassing

  619. to him.

  620. And I

  621. said, I

  622. haven't

  623. picked up

  624. on it.

  625. I said, I

  626. never know

  627. where he's

  628. going until

  629. he gets

  630. there anyway,

  631. so I

  632. haven't really

  633. picked up

  634. on it

  635. yet.

  636. You know,

  637. but I'll

  638. watch out

  639. for him.

  640. So I

  641. hung out

  642. a little

  643. longer in

  644. that class,

  645. and I

  646. began to

  647. see him

  648. that.

  649. There was

  650. another

  651. class of

  652. the same

  653. aged men.

  654. There was

  655. a class that

  656. he taught,

  657. and everybody

  658. was in there

  659. because he

  660. was teaching

  661. it, and

  662. there was

  663. another

  664. class that

  665. was over

  666. there because

  667. he wasn't

  668. teaching it.

  669. They

  670. needed a

  671. teacher.

  672. I

  673. couldn't

  674. find one.

  675. so because

  676. of his

  677. wife's

  678. plea to

  679. me,

  680. for it

  681. to keep

  682. his dignity,

  683. I want

  684. you to

  685. house

  686. one.

  687. hard thing

  688. to do.

  689. I sat

  690. down and

  691. I said,

  692. Judge,

  693. this other

  694. class needs a

  695. teacher,

  696. and I can't

  697. find one.

  698. I really

  699. need to

  700. combine their

  701. small class

  702. with yours.

  703. And I'm

  704. just wondering

  705. to make

  706. that transition

  707. smooth.

  708. If you

  709. wouldn't mind

  710. me teaching

  711. it.

  712. The judge

  713. had a

  714. trait about

  715. him that

  716. I highly

  717. respect,

  718. but I sure

  719. don't like.

  720. he had a

  721. trait of

  722. long

  723. pause.

  724. And I'll

  725. tell you what

  726. was different

  727. about this

  728. man than

  729. me or

  730. most of

  731. us,

  732. is that he

  733. thought before

  734. he spoke.

  735. That's a

  736. novel concept.

  737. most of

  738. us just

  739. open our

  740. mouth and

  741. hope we

  742. catch up

  743. with it,

  744. you know.

  745. And he

  746. paused.

  747. And I've

  748. been prone

  749. sometimes in

  750. those pauses

  751. to repeat

  752. myself.

  753. When I was

  754. about to do

  755. that,

  756. he said,

  757. passion.

  758. I never

  759. talked to

  760. him.

  761. I loved

  762. him until

  763. he died.

  764. But I

  765. believe the

  766. pause that

  767. Jesus did

  768. was that

  769. he was

  770. trying to

  771. to

  772. gather

  773. his

  774. thoughts.

  775. to

  776. get

  777. together

  778. her.

  779. But even

  780. more than

  781. that,

  782. he was

  783. wanting

  784. those

  785. disciples

  786. together

  787. things.

  788. What

  789. filtering

  790. his

  791. thoughts?

  792. He was

  793. letting the

  794. woman and

  795. the apostle

  796. filter

  797. things.

  798. And he

  799. then says

  800. something

  801. shocking.

  802. he said

  803. to her,

  804. he said to

  805. her,

  806. let the

  807. children

  808. be fed

  809. first.

  810. It's not

  811. right to

  812. take the

  813. children's

  814. bread and

  815. throw it

  816. to the

  817. dogs.

  818. did he

  819. call her

  820. a dog?

  821. I mean,

  822. we're not

  823. talking about

  824. a pampered

  825. household

  826. pet here.

  827. They didn't

  828. have those.

  829. Nor is it

  830. in a couple

  831. terms of

  832. dogs in Greek.

  833. Nor is it

  834. the harsher

  835. term of a

  836. scavenger

  837. dog like a

  838. coyote kind

  839. of concept

  840. where they

  841. come in and

  842. tear and

  843. you're scared

  844. of them.

  845. It's really

  846. more of the

  847. kind of dog

  848. that we

  849. inherited one

  850. day when I

  851. came home

  852. from a late

  853. meeting and

  854. there was a

  855. dog laying

  856. right by my

  857. back door

  858. in a pile

  859. of, among

  860. a couple of

  861. bags of

  862. clothes we

  863. were going

  864. to give

  865. away.

  866. That dog

  867. was nestled

  868. up there

  869. trying to

  870. stay warm

  871. and I

  872. when my

  873. family could

  874. look, I

  875. kind of

  876. shooed the

  877. dog off,

  878. you know,

  879. and when I

  880. came back

  881. the next day

  882. that dog

  883. was there,

  884. you know,

  885. and the

  886. rest of

  887. that's where

  888. I get time

  889. to tell

  890. him,

  891. I'm more

  892. tired than

  893. you are,

  894. I promise.

  895. We're

  896. leaving

  897. for spring

  898. break.

  899. I went

  900. in and

  901. fed the

  902. dog.

  903. We're

  904. gone for

  905. a week.

  906. The dog

  907. got to

  908. find a

  909. meal

  910. somewhere

  911. else.

  912. The

  913. girls wanted

  914. that dog

  915. so bad.

  916. And I

  917. said,

  918. if the

  919. dogs ever

  920. get back

  921. to the

  922. dog,

  923. I didn't

  924. know.

  925. They

  926. have

  927. been

  928. in

  929. the

  930. family.

  931. My

  932. family,

  933. my

  934. rascals,

  935. they

  936. got

  937. somebody

  938. to feed

  939. that

  940. dog

  941. at my

  942. house.

  943. But he's

  944. not talking

  945. about a

  946. little dog.

  947. He's

  948. talking about

  949. a softer

  950. term for

  951. a little

  952. dog.

  953. He kind

  954. of wonders

  955. the

  956. harsher

  957. term for

  958. dog

  959. was used

  960. by Jews

  961. to

  962. support

  963. Gentiles

  964. like the

  965. Canaanites.

  966. So why

  967. did he

  968. say that?

  969. I hope

  970. you sense

  971. this morning

  972. the awkwardness

  973. and the

  974. tension

  975. because you

  976. should.

  977. That's what

  978. Mark

  979. wants.

  980. That's what

  981. Jesus

  982. wants.

  983. after all

  984. the

  985. talk of

  986. the

  987. Pharisees

  988. and the

  989. scribes

  990. about

  991. what's

  992. clean

  993. and

  994. what's

  995. not,

  996. Jesus

  997. purposely

  998. goes to

  999. an

  1000. unclean

  1001. area,

  1002. is

  1003. approached

  1004. by an

  1005. unclean

  1006. woman

  1007. with a

  1008. demon

  1009. in her

  1010. home

  1011. begging

  1012. and the

  1013. apostles

  1014. just want

  1015. her to

  1016. go away

  1017. and Jesus

  1018. just wants

  1019. it all

  1020. to play

  1021. out.

  1022. There

  1023. are

  1024. people

  1025. that

  1026. are

  1027. obviously

  1028. not

  1029. worthy.

  1030. She was

  1031. one of

  1032. them.

  1033. Then there

  1034. are others

  1035. who are

  1036. observed

  1037. as

  1038. worthy

  1039. and the

  1040. Jews

  1041. sure

  1042. thought

  1043. they

  1044. were.

  1045. There's

  1046. a saying

  1047. and I

  1048. don't know

  1049. that it

  1050. was original

  1051. with it

  1052. but I

  1053. heard

  1054. Adrian

  1055. Rogers

  1056. say it

  1057. years ago.

  1058. A text

  1059. without a

  1060. context

  1061. is a

  1062. pretext.

  1063. This

  1064. passage

  1065. can be

  1066. easily

  1067. misunderstood

  1068. if you

  1069. ignore

  1070. the context.

  1071. Several

  1072. years ago

  1073. a feminist

  1074. scholar

  1075. said that

  1076. Jesus

  1077. was

  1078. insensitive

  1079. in this

  1080. passage

  1081. that he

  1082. was harsh

  1083. and that

  1084. he was

  1085. so severe

  1086. to the

  1087. lady

  1088. that he

  1089. demeaned

  1090. her

  1091. in a

  1092. chauvinistic

  1093. fashion

  1094. and by

  1095. doing so

  1096. he crossed

  1097. the borders

  1098. of courtesy

  1099. and slandered

  1100. her and

  1101. that means

  1102. he sinned

  1103. therefore he

  1104. cannot be

  1105. sinless.

  1106. And that

  1107. my friend

  1108. is a

  1109. false

  1110. reasoning

  1111. and a

  1112. pretext.

  1113. It's also

  1114. heresy

  1115. and it

  1116. also

  1117. demeans

  1118. Christ.

  1119. Be careful

  1120. about such

  1121. things.

  1122. I'm firmly

  1123. convinced

  1124. that Jesus

  1125. had left

  1126. an altercation

  1127. with the

  1128. Jewish

  1129. establishment

  1130. that his

  1131. disciples had

  1132. witnessed.

  1133. He had

  1134. pulled them

  1135. away for

  1136. a ministerial

  1137. retreat and

  1138. now what

  1139. seemed like

  1140. an interruption

  1141. was really

  1142. a divine

  1143. appointment,

  1144. was really

  1145. a life

  1146. lesson,

  1147. was really

  1148. an illustration,

  1149. was really

  1150. a walking

  1151. parable

  1152. before their

  1153. eyes.

  1154. They had

  1155. just been

  1156. with people

  1157. that were

  1158. seen as

  1159. worthy.

  1160. The Pharisees

  1161. and the

  1162. scribes

  1163. were descendants

  1164. of Abraham.

  1165. Those who

  1166. knew the

  1167. law,

  1168. they observed

  1169. proper

  1170. traditions,

  1171. they washed

  1172. ritually,

  1173. they attended

  1174. synagogues,

  1175. they tithed,

  1176. they fasted,

  1177. they separated

  1178. themselves.

  1179. The Pharisees,

  1180. the word

  1181. is a

  1182. participle that

  1183. means the

  1184. separated

  1185. ones.

  1186. That's what

  1187. they thrived

  1188. off of.

  1189. Anyone that

  1190. saw them

  1191. just knew

  1192. that they

  1193. were worthy.

  1194. They thought

  1195. it themselves.

  1196. A

  1197. Seraphonician

  1198. woman in

  1199. Tyre was

  1200. far from

  1201. worthy.

  1202. Good church

  1203. leaders,

  1204. they had to

  1205. be worthy.

  1206. Jesus

  1207. amplified that

  1208. thought to

  1209. the apostles.

  1210. more than

  1211. to the

  1212. lady,

  1213. I believe,

  1214. to let

  1215. it sink

  1216. in and

  1217. to sink

  1218. in heart

  1219. and in

  1220. that

  1221. pause,

  1222. my

  1223. breath.

  1224. Those

  1225. people that

  1226. appear

  1227. obviously

  1228. not worthy.

  1229. We look

  1230. down on

  1231. such people

  1232. as well.

  1233. Then there

  1234. are those

  1235. that are

  1236. observed as

  1237. worthy.

  1238. we think

  1239. a lot

  1240. of them.

  1241. We think

  1242. a lot

  1243. more of

  1244. them than

  1245. we should.

  1246. The reality

  1247. is the

  1248. only type

  1249. of believer

  1250. that there

  1251. really is,

  1252. what we

  1253. call a

  1254. Christian

  1255. today,

  1256. is one

  1257. that is

  1258. made

  1259. worthy.

  1260. Notice

  1261. what he

  1262. says.

  1263. In

  1264. Mark

    Mark 7:27

  1265. chapter 7

  1266. verse 27,

  1267. he said

  1268. to her,

  1269. let the

  1270. children be

  1271. fed first

  1272. for it's

  1273. not right

  1274. to take

  1275. the

  1276. children's

  1277. bread and

  1278. throw up

  1279. the

  1280. dog.

  1281. But she

  1282. answered him,

  1283. yes,

  1284. Lord,

  1285. yet even

  1286. the dogs

  1287. under the

  1288. table

  1289. eat the

  1290. children's

  1291. clothes.

  1292. And he

  1293. said to

  1294. her,

  1295. for this

  1296. statement,

  1297. you may

  1298. go your

  1299. way.

  1300. The

  1301. demon

  1302. has

  1303. left

  1304. your

  1305. daughter.

  1306. God

  1307. went home

  1308. and

  1309. found

  1310. the

  1311. child

  1312. lying

  1313. in

  1314. the

  1315. man

  1316. and

  1317. the

  1318. demon

  1319. would

  1320. go.

  1321. Matthew

    Matthew 15:28

  1322. 15

  1323. verse 28

  1324. says,

  1325. then Jesus

  1326. answered her,

  1327. O woman,

  1328. great is

  1329. your faith,

  1330. be it done

  1331. for you as

  1332. you desire.

  1333. And her

  1334. daughter was

  1335. healed

  1336. instantly.

  1337. she didn't

  1338. respond with

  1339. offense.

  1340. She didn't

  1341. respond with

  1342. worthiness.

  1343. She didn't

  1344. respond with

  1345. anger.

  1346. She didn't

  1347. respond with

  1348. entitlement.

  1349. She didn't

  1350. respond with

  1351. bitterness.

  1352. She knew

  1353. she was not

  1354. worthy and

  1355. she responded

  1356. humbly.

  1357. Somewhere in

  1358. her heart,

  1359. she had

  1360. become

  1361. convinced

  1362. that Jesus

  1363. was

  1364. God.

  1365. That he

  1366. had enough

  1367. power,

  1368. that he

  1369. had enough

  1370. mercy,

  1371. that he

  1372. had enough

  1373. grace to

  1374. change her

  1375. life, to

  1376. change the

  1377. life of her

  1378. family.

  1379. And even

  1380. when she

  1381. felt small,

  1382. she knew

  1383. Jesus is

  1384. sufficient.

  1385. His mercy

  1386. overflows

  1387. every border

  1388. or boundary

  1389. that we could

  1390. ever come

  1391. up with.

  1392. Nothing

  1393. can separate

  1394. us from

  1395. the love

  1396. of God.

  1397. Romans 8.38

  1398. His grace

  1399. reaches all.

  1400. His power

  1401. changes

  1402. eternity.

  1403. I doubt

  1404. she knew

  1405. because she

  1406. was a

  1407. Gentile

  1408. Seraphonician

  1409. woman,

  1410. Canaanite.

  1411. I doubt

  1412. she knew

  1413. Psalm 51

  1414. 17,

  1415. the sacrifice

  1416. of God

  1417. are broken

  1418. spirit.

  1419. A broken

  1420. and contrite

  1421. heart of God.

  1422. He

  1423. is not

  1424. a

  1425. spirit.

  1426. Not being

  1427. raised around

  1428. the word of

  1429. God.

  1430. I doubt

  1431. she knew

  1432. Isaiah 66

    Isaiah 66:6

  1433. verse 6

  1434. that says

  1435. but this

  1436. is the one

  1437. who is

  1438. allowed

  1439. to

  1440. him.

  1441. He

  1442. is

  1443. humble

  1444. and

  1445. contrite

  1446. his

  1447. fear

  1448. and

  1449. trembles

  1450. at

  1451. the

  1452. heart.

  1453. But God

  1454. gave her

  1455. the insight

  1456. to have

  1457. a faith

  1458. in Christ

  1459. great enough

  1460. to trust

  1461. him,

  1462. to submit

  1463. to him

  1464. and to

  1465. ask

  1466. him.

  1467. And Romans

  1468. 10

  1469. 13

  1470. tells us

  1471. for

  1472. everyone

  1473. who

  1474. calls

  1475. for

  1476. him

  1477. shall

  1478. be

  1479. saved.

  1480. I

  1481. called

  1482. her

  1483. theology,

  1484. bred

  1485. from

  1486. theology.

  1487. And that's

  1488. the right

  1489. type

  1490. of theology.

  1491. She

  1492. wasn't

  1493. worthy.

  1494. Neither

  1495. am I,

  1496. neither

  1497. are you.

  1498. But thank

  1499. God

  1500. through

  1501. his grace

  1502. and mercy

  1503. through

  1504. Christ.

  1505. He'll

  1506. make us

  1507. one

  1508. when we

  1509. send

  1510. to

  1511. our

  1512. sins.

  1513. Thank you.

  1514. With every

  1515. head bowed

  1516. and every

  1517. eye closed,

  1518. I want you

  1519. to hear

  1520. me today.

  1521. The person

  1522. who's been

  1523. in church

  1524. all their

  1525. life,

  1526. the person

  1527. who's been

  1528. led in

  1529. church

  1530. for years,

  1531. is not

  1532. worthy.

  1533. If you

  1534. think that

  1535. will cover

  1536. you,

  1537. you're

  1538. wrong.

  1539. Hopefully

  1540. that

  1541. church

  1542. loyalty

  1543. and that

  1544. church

  1545. leadership

  1546. has

  1547. had a

  1548. beginning

  1549. that had

  1550. a lot

  1551. to do

  1552. with a

  1553. broken

  1554. and

  1555. contrite

  1556. heart

  1557. before

  1558. the

  1559. Lord.

  1560. we

  1561. surrender

  1562. our

  1563. lives

  1564. to

  1565. Christ

  1566. and

  1567. allow

  1568. him

  1569. to

  1570. make

  1571. us

  1572. work.

  1573. I want

  1574. to be

  1575. clear

  1576. today,

  1577. none of

  1578. us are

  1579. worthy,

  1580. but all

  1581. of us

  1582. have

  1583. opportunity.

  1584. And if

  1585. you've

  1586. never

  1587. given

  1588. your

  1589. heart

  1590. and

  1591. life

  1592. to

  1593. the

  1594. Lord

  1595. Jesus

  1596. Christ,

  1597. I want

  1598. you to

  1599. know

  1600. receive

  1601. you as

  1602. you are.

  1603. Any

  1604. function

  1605. within

  1606. you

  1607. to

  1608. come

  1609. to

  1610. him

  1611. didn't

  1612. come

  1613. from

  1614. you

  1615. and

  1616. came

  1617. to

  1618. him.

  1619. It's a

  1620. divine

  1621. appointment.

  1622. You

  1623. need not

  1624. leave here

  1625. without

  1626. giving your

  1627. life

  1628. a

  1629. throne.

  1630. We'll

  1631. stand and

  1632. we'll

  1633. sing in

  1634. just a

  1635. moment.

  1636. And

  1637. when we

  1638. do,

  1639. I

  1640. encourage

  1641. you to

  1642. step out

  1643. immediately

  1644. and

  1645. come

  1646. and

  1647. pass

  1648. right

  1649. in

  1650. the

  1651. seat.

  1652. Maybe

  1653. you're

  1654. here

  1655. this

  1656. morning

  1657. and

  1658. you

  1659. are

  1660. but

  1661. you

  1662. haven't

  1663. it's

  1664. just

  1665. been

  1666. a

  1667. private

  1668. faith.

  1669. It's

  1670. been

  1671. a

  1672. non-biblical

  1673. faith.

  1674. You

  1675. need to

  1676. make

  1677. that

  1678. public.

  1679. Like

  1680. those

  1681. that

  1682. we

  1683. baptized

  1684. last

  1685. Sunday,

  1686. you

  1687. need to

  1688. make

  1689. money.

  1690. Maybe

  1691. you're

  1692. here

  1693. and

  1694. it's

  1695. just

  1696. a

  1697. point

  1698. of

  1699. obedience

  1700. for

  1701. you.

  1702. You

  1703. just

  1704. need

  1705. to

  1706. do

  1707. what

  1708. God

  1709. tells

  1710. you

  1711. to

  1712. do

  1713. God

  1714. may

  1715. be

  1716. !

  1717. telling

  1718. you

  1719. to

  1720. because

  1721. of

  1722. what

  1723. Christ

  1724. did

  1725. for

  1726. us

  1727. on

  1728. the

  1729. cross.

  1730. A

  1731. humble

  1732. broken

  1733. spirit

  1734. can be

  1735. healed

  1736. by

  1737. such

  1738. mouth.

  1739. We

  1740. bring

  1741. your

  1742. brokenness

  1743. to you.

  1744. Heavenly

  1745. Father,

  1746. I love

  1747. you.

  1748. And I

  1749. thank you

  1750. for the

  1751. hard

  1752. lessons

  1753. that you

  1754. teach

  1755. us.

  1756. Sometimes

  1757. not

  1758. exactly

  1759. the way

  1760. we

  1761. wish

  1762. you would.

  1763. Help

  1764. us

  1765. on

  1766. God.

  1767. Take

  1768. you

  1769. .

  1770. Take

  1771. Take

  1772. Take

  1773. you.
