  1. And all God's people said, Amen. Thank you so much choir and orchestra for leading us this morning.

  2. If you have your Bibles, I want you to turn to Deuteronomy chapter 6.

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  3. Deuteronomy chapter 6.

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  4. Well, the world has come to America recently to see the World Cup.

  5. I don't even know where it is.

  6. But soccer is not the main sport around here, but it is in the rest of the world, or football.

  7. And I have had fun listening to people's impressions of America as they visit it for the first time.

  8. It is something that Americans need to listen to, quite honestly.

  9. A Scottish fan described Bucky's as a, quote, gas station mixed with Disney World wrapped in a gift shop.

  10. Freddie from Germany called Taco Bell the Holy Land.

  11. Elsa from Sweden tasted ranch dressing and said, I won't ever be able to live without it.

  12. And I will tell you that I always ask missionaries what they need and what we can bring.

  13. And many times I'll take an extra suitcase full of stuff that they can't get overseas, but they can get here.

  14. Many times they ask for dry ranch dressing because it is not available anywhere else around.

  15. It really, it's a rarity.

  16. Kenny asked for ibuprofen.

  17. And he said, can you find me 500 caplets of ibuprofen?

  18. And we took him 1,000, praise God.

  19. So anyway, over and over again, European visitors are shocked at the vastness of our country and the friendliness of Americans.

  20. I saw a South African that was amazed at a truck stop did not have an armed guard and had bottled water and an ice machine on the sidewalk in front of the store and nobody was even taking it.

  21. I didn't tell him the rest of the story.

  22. I didn't tell him the rest of the story.

  23. But anyway, that's what he thought.

  24. One Scottish fan woke up his Bostonian neighbors playing the bagpipes at 630 a.m.

  25. And he was greeted with breakfast and gifts.

  26. Another Bostonian said of the Scottish, he said, the Tartan Army is the best thing in Boston since Tom Brady.

  27. Listen, friend, I love to travel the world.

  28. I do, and I'm thankful for the opportunity to go and serve the Lord in Dublin and to be able to see some things along the way.

  29. But I'm telling you, I love to come home.

  30. We live in the best country in the world, period.

  31. And for those that don't believe it, you are welcome to leave.

  32. And for those of us who stay, I want you to know we've been entrusted with much.

  33. We must protect it.

  34. We must preserve the good of our country and root out the bad.

  35. A month ago, Dawn and I gave our oldest daughter away in marriage, and it served as a stark reminder to me that every generation eventually hands the future over to the next generation.

  36. I'm not the only one who understood that.

  37. Moses understood that.

  38. And he shared that.

  39. And we still need to keep it before us.

  40. May this ring in our ears, our hearts, our minds, as strong as it did in those that heard it for the first time in person.

  41. Deuteronomy chapter 6, beginning verse 1 says,

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  42. Now this is the commandment, the statutes, and the rules that the Lord your God commanded you to teach you.

  43. That you may do them in the land to which you're going over, to possess it.

  44. That you may fear the Lord your God, that you may fear the Lord your God, you and your son and your son's son, by keeping all of his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be long.

  45. Hear, therefore, O Israel, and be careful to do them, that it may be well with you, and that you may multiply greatly as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you in a land flowing with milk and honey.

  46. Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.

  47. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might.

  48. These words that I command you today shall be upon your heart.

  49. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.

  50. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.

  51. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house, and on your gates.

  52. Those words that I just read once could not be read because a man's hand was lying on top of it.

  53. Whose hand was that?

  54. George Washington.

  55. Upon his swearing in, George Washington placed his hand on an open Bible and made an oath to the Lord as his fingers touched this very scripture.

  56. Now, does that surprise you?

  57. I'm sure that the forefathers of our nation did not intend for our laws to be interpreted as they are today.

  58. Today, the men that founded this nation were not like many of the men and the women that lead our nation today.

  59. The few good, godly leaders we have are in a fight, folks.

  60. How do we protect what we have and prepare the next generation for what's to come?

  61. I believe we have to look in three directions.

  62. One is I think we have to look back.

  63. My great, great, great, great grandpa was the chief justice of the South Carolina State Supreme Court

  64. and a governor of the state of South Carolina.

  65. He was voted down by the Senate when he was recommended by Washington to take John Jay's place as chief justice of the Supreme Court.

  66. That's what happens when you say dumb stuff days before a vote.

  67. My great, great, great grand uncle was the youngest to sign the Declaration of Independence

  68. and was also a governor of South Carolina.

  69. I got Rutledge in my blood.

  70. Do you know that some of the men who signed our Declaration of Independence

  71. declaring our commitment to break ties with Great Britain

  72. were also men of God that were responsible for founding the American Bible Society,

  73. the American Tract Society,

  74. as well as the Philadelphia Bible Society.

  75. Many times our founding fathers are made out to be deities.

  76. In other words, those that believe that God was the creator,

  77. but that he does not value a relationship with us,

  78. or that we need not value a relationship with him.

  79. They don't think it's possible.

  80. They believe that after creation that God took his hand off the earth.

  81. A deist believes that we can't commune with God,

  82. that we have no relationship with him,

  83. that he is simply a cosmic creator

  84. with no relation or concern for our world.

  85. I want to ask you this morning to begin with,

  86. do you think these men sound like deities?

  87. Patrick Henry said,

  88. it cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often

  89. this great nation was founded not by religionists,

  90. but by Christians.

  91. Not on religions,

  92. but on the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  93. John Adams,

  94. when speaking of the general principles

  95. of which the fathers achieved independence said,

  96. I will avow that I then believed and now believe

  97. that those general principles of Christianity

  98. are as eternal and immutable

  99. as the existence and attributes of God

  100. and that those principles of liberty

  101. are as unalterable as human nature.

  102. End quote.

  103. They believed our leaders

  104. ought to be men of Christ.

  105. Benjamin Franklin said,

  106. he shall introduce into public affairs

  107. the principles of Christianity

  108. that will change the face of the world.

  109. John Quincy Adams,

  110. our sixth president,

  111. said the highest glory

  112. of the American Revolution was this,

  113. it connected with one indissoluble bond

  114. the principles of civil government

  115. and the principles of Christianity.

  116. Sadly,

  117. at least in my perspective,

  118. that bond seems to have dissolved somewhat

  119. in our society.

  120. Noah Webster,

  121. as in Webster's Dictionary,

  122. said this,

  123. the religion which has introduced civil liberty

  124. is the religion of Christ and his apostles,

  125. which enjoins humility,

  126. piety,

  127. and benevolence,

  128. which acknowledges in every person

  129. a brother,

  130. a sister,

  131. a citizen with equal rights.

  132. This is the genuine Christianity.

  133. And it is to this Christianity

  134. that we owe our free constitution of government.

  135. Eat that up,

  136. ACLU.

  137. These wise men understood

  138. that liberty is all about Christ.

  139. You can't separate it.

  140. In 1796,

  141. the Supreme Court of Maryland ruled,

  142. by our form of government,

  143. the Christian religion

  144. is the established religion,

  145. and all sects and denominations of Christians

  146. are placed under the same equal footing

  147. and are equally entitled to protection

  148. in their liberty.

  149. All denominations of Christians,

  150. is what Maryland said.

  151. In reality,

  152. the First Amendment was added

  153. to make sure that one Christian denomination

  154. didn't rise above other Christian denominations.

  155. And the assumption was

  156. that Christianity was a given.

  157. In the beginning of the nation,

  158. there was no conflict with the First Amendment

  159. and having Washington lay his hand on the Bible

  160. open to Deuteronomy 6.

  161. There was no conflict with the First Amendment

  162. and having chaplains of Congress

  163. lead the worship service

  164. that concluded Washington's inauguration.

  165. There was no conflict with the First Amendment

  166. to be supporting ministers and missionaries

  167. with federal money,

  168. listen to this,

  169. for the first 100 years of our nation.

  170. My!

  171. Times have changed.

  172. In 1781,

  173. a publisher petitioned Congress

  174. for permission to print Bibles.

  175. And Congress approved of it

  176. and stated this,

  177. the Congress of the United States

  178. approves and recommends to the people

  179. the Holy Bible

  180. for use in schools.

  181. End of quote.

  182. When it was challenged,

  183. the Supreme Court responded,

  184. why not the Bible,

  185. and especially the New Testament,

  186. be read and taught

  187. as divine revelation in the schools?

  188. Where can the purest principles of morality

  189. be learned so clearly

  190. or so perfectly

  191. as from the New Testament?

  192. The state of Delaware's Constitution,

  193. 1776 stated,

  194. everyone appointed to public office

  195. must say,

  196. listen to this,

  197. I'm going to repeat this,

  198. the state of Delaware,

  199. the Constitution of 1776,

  200. stated,

  201. everyone appointed to public office

  202. must say,

  203. I do profess faith

  204. in God the Father

  205. and in the Lord Jesus Christ,

  206. His only Son,

  207. and in the Holy Ghost,

  208. one God,

  209. blessed forevermore.

  210. And I do acknowledge

  211. the Holy Scriptures

  212. of the Old and New Testament

  213. to be given

  214. by divine inspiration.

  215. End of quote.

  216. John Jay,

  217. the first Chief Justice

  218. of the U.S. Supreme Court

  219. and one of the many contributors

  220. to the Constitution

  221. stated this,

  222. Providence,

  223. when he spoke of God,

  224. has given to our people

  225. the choice of their rulers

  226. and it is the duty

  227. as well as the privilege

  228. and interest

  229. of our Christian nation

  230. to select

  231. and prefer Christians

  232. for their rulers.

  233. He went on to write,

  234. the right to hold office

  235. was to be extended

  236. to persons

  237. of any Christian denomination.

  238. That's a lot, folks.

  239. That's the foundation

  240. of our nation.

  241. And I say that today

  242. because that's not information

  243. that you're going to find

  244. in your typical history book.

  245. You're not going to hear that.

  246. These truths

  247. have to be preserved

  248. and carried on

  249. to the next generation.

  250. But I don't think

  251. we only look back.

  252. I believe we also

  253. look up.

  254. Scripture says,

  255. Hear, O Israel,

  256. the Lord our God,

  257. the Lord is one.

  258. The issue is not

  259. simply

  260. what our founders

  261. believed,

  262. although it needs

  263. to be known

  264. and I believe

  265. it needs to be celebrated.

  266. the issue today

  267. is what we believe.

  268. The issue today

  269. is what we're going

  270. to do about it.

  271. George Washington

  272. may have placed his hand

  273. upon Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  274. chapter 6,

  275. but the greater question

  276. today is if Deuteronomy 6

  277. is in our hearts.

  278. Placing your hand

  279. on something

  280. is one thing.

  281. Placing God's word

  282. in your heart

  283. is another thing.

  284. Verse 6 of Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  285. chapter 6 says,

  286. And these words

  287. that I command you today

  288. shall be upon

  289. your heart.

  290. God's word

  291. in our hearts

  292. is what really

  293. changes

  294. a nation.

  295. Having a burden

  296. for God's word

  297. to be paramount

  298. in all that we do

  299. will lead

  300. God's people

  301. to pray.

  302. And when we pray

  303. as we're instructed

  304. to pray,

  305. God moves.

  306. 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 2:1–4

  307. chapter 2

  308. verse 1 through 4

  309. says this,

  310. First of all,

  311. then I urge you

  312. that supplications,

  313. prayers,

  314. intercessions,

  315. and thanksgivings

  316. be made

  317. for all people,

  318. for kings

  319. and all who are

  320. in high positions,

  321. that we may lead

  322. a peaceful

  323. and quiet life,

  324. godly and dignified

  325. in every way.

  326. This is good

  327. and it is pleasing

  328. in the sight of God

  329. our Savior

  330. who desires

  331. all people

  332. to be saved

  333. and to come

  334. to the knowledge

  335. of the truth.

  336. Christians,

  337. we need to pray

  338. for those that lead us

  339. and pray

  340. for our lives

  341. will not get

  342. in the way

  343. when God

  344. wants to do

  345. a work

  346. in us

  347. and through us.

  348. We need to pray

  349. that we are

  350. peaceful.

  351. What a difference

  352. it makes

  353. when we pray

  354. for God's

  355. leadership

  356. in our land.

  357. Friend,

  358. it is time

  359. we throw up

  360. our hands,

  361. but not in disgust,

  362. but we throw up

  363. our hands to God

  364. in prayer.

  365. That we

  366. look up

  367. to Him.

  368. That we turn

  369. to Him.

  370. That we don't

  371. get sour

  372. on the changes

  373. that have happened

  374. in our world

  375. and in our nation.

  376. It's not really

  377. about that.

  378. It's got more

  379. to do with

  380. how that's

  381. affected us.

  382. Are we salt

  383. and light

  384. in the world

  385. in which we live?

  386. What are we doing

  387. for the cause

  388. of Christ

  389. in the way

  390. in which we live?

  391. in the way

  392. in which we talk?

  393. In the places

  394. in which we go?

  395. What are we

  396. to do?

  397. I think we look

  398. up.

  399. But not only

  400. that,

  401. but I also

  402. think that we

  403. look ahead.

  404. For Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 6:7

  405. chapter 6

  406. verse 7

  407. says,

  408. teach them

  409. diligently

  410. to your

  411. children.

  412. And I talk

  413. a lot about

  414. this.

  415. It was

  416. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  417. chapter 6,

  418. the Shema

  419. is a key

  420. part of

  421. Jewish life.

  422. It was

  423. central to

  424. what they

  425. stood for

  426. in the days

  427. of the Old

  428. Testament.

  429. It is

  430. central in

  431. Judaism

  432. today.

  433. They look

  434. back to

  435. this passage

  436. of Scripture.

  437. Scripture.

  438. It is key.

  439. It teaches

  440. us what our

  441. home ought to

  442. be like.

  443. Jesus said

  444. in Matthew

  445. 28,

  446. 18 through

  447. 20,

  448. that we need

  449. to make

  450. disciples in

  451. Jerusalem,

  452. in Judea,

  453. in Samaria,

  454. and the

  455. uttermost.

  456. We have a

  457. story to

  458. tell.

  459. And that

  460. story starts

  461. at home.

  462. To trust

  463. the power

  464. of the

  465. gospel and

  466. share that

  467. gospel.

  468. Share it

  469. faithfully

  470. at home.

  471. Share it

  472. as you go.

  473. pray that

  474. God will

  475. convince you

  476. that what

  477. America needs

  478. and what

  479. this world

  480. needs is a

  481. godly

  482. generation that

  483. is protecting

  484. our freedoms

  485. and sharing

  486. our love

  487. for what we

  488. can be in

  489. Christ to

  490. our children.

  491. I want you

  492. to hear me

  493. today.

  494. Every

  495. generation is

  496. only,

  497. excuse me,

  498. every nation

  499. is only one

  500. generation away

  501. from forgetting

  502. what made

  503. it great.

  504. Every nation

  505. is only one

  506. generation away

  507. from forgetting

  508. what made

  509. it great.

  510. And that's

  511. why Moses

  512. in Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  513. chapter 6

  514. wasn't talking

  515. to politicians.

  516. He was talking

  517. to parents.

  518. He was talking

  519. to grandparents.

  520. He understood

  521. that what happens

  522. in the living

  523. room today

  524. determines what

  525. happens in the

  526. nation tomorrow.

  527. The future

  528. of America

  529. will not

  530. ultimately

  531. be determined

  532. in Washington,

  533. D.C.

  534. It'll be

  535. determined in

  536. our homes.

  537. It'll be

  538. determined around

  539. our kitchen

  540. tables.

  541. Listen to me,

  542. church.

  543. It'll be

  544. determined in

  545. our churches

  546. and in our

  547. hearts

  548. that love

  549. the Lord

  550. their God

  551. with all

  552. of their

  553. heart,

  554. all of

  555. their soul,

  556. all of

  557. their mind.

  558. It'll be

  559. determined by

  560. people that

  561. look back

  562. to see how

  563. God led us

  564. to this

  565. point.

  566. and who,

  567. let me add,

  568. trains their

  569. children in

  570. that knowledge.

  571. If the

  572. history books

  573. don't tell

  574. it that we

  575. use in

  576. schools,

  577. then let's

  578. buy some

  579. different books

  580. and do it at

  581. the house

  582. so they'll

  583. know it

  584. anyway.

  585. it'll be

  586. determined

  587. by people

  588. that make

  589. sure the

  590. truth is

  591. known.

  592. It'll be

  593. determined by

  594. people who

  595. look up to

  596. the Lord

  597. and bless

  598. this country

  599. with their

  600. prayers for

  601. not only its

  602. greatness,

  603. but also pray

  604. for its

  605. godliness.

  606. Amos

    Amos 5:24

  607. chapter 5

  608. verse 24

  609. says,

  610. The future

  611. of America

  612. is determined

  613. by those

  614. that look

  615. ahead and

  616. invest in

  617. the gospel,

  618. invest their

  619. lives in

  620. godly

  621. character,

  622. invest in

  623. godly

  624. principles in

  625. the coming

  626. generation.

  627. My prayer

  628. is, oh

  629. dear God,

  630. may we be

  631. found faithful

  632. in doing

  633. all we

  634. can do

  635. to reach

  636. as many

  637. as we

  638. can and

  639. to make

  640. this nation

  641. as great

  642. as we

  643. can.

  644. My friend,

  645. that's where

  646. we came

  647. from.

  648. Let's do

  649. everything we

  650. can to

  651. get back

  652. to that

  653. and live

  654. it out

  655. in every

  656. aspect of

  657. our lives.

  658. Before we

  659. point fingers

  660. at everything

  661. else that's

  662. wrong in

  663. the world,

  664. let's seek

  665. God's face

  666. at what's

  667. wrong with

  668. us.

  669. Let's

  670. get that

  671. right.

  672. When that's

  673. right,

  674. may God

  675. by the

  676. power of

  677. his Holy

  678. Spirit

  679. influence

  680. those around

  681. us more

  682. than we

  683. could ever

  684. imagine.

  685. Amen?

  686. Amen.

  687. Let's pray.
