  1. How many of you are familiar with the old country music singer Tom T. Hall? Raise your hand. You know, you're giving away your age, probably, but old guy.

  2. Well, many years ago, he had a song that was popular. I don't know if you'd call it a hit or not. It was called I Love. It started off like this. I love little baby ducks, old pickup trucks, slow moving trains, and rain.

  3. I love little country streams, sleep without dreams, Sunday school in May, and hay. And after every stanza like that, he had this little chorus, and I love you too.

  4. Lisa dared me to do that.

  5. And one member of this church told me, I would give good money if you would sing in church.

  6. Good money is a hundred dollar bill right here when I walk out today. Okay?

  7. That's a silly song, isn't it? It really is.

  8. But there's a lot of truth in it.

  9. Haven't you said things like he sings about, I love the mountains.

  10. I love the beach.

  11. I love this and that.

  12. I love dogs.

  13. I love whatever.

  14. And then, as we talk about loving this and that, we look at our spouse, we look at someone special in our life,

  15. and we gaze into their eyes and say, I love you.

  16. We use that word love in a very trite, trivial way a lot of times, don't we?

  17. And I guess that's okay most of the time.

  18. When we hear someone, because of that, when we hear someone talk about love,

  19. we don't really sit up and take notice, do we?

  20. Because the word's just thrown about, talked about, sung about all the time in ways that are not really meaningful.

  21. So it's okay not to pay attention when people are just talking about love in general,

  22. but it's not okay when Jesus is the one talking about love.

  23. When Jesus spoke about love, he was always serious.

  24. Never in a trivial way do you find in the New Testament, in the Gospels,

  25. where Jesus talked about love in a flippant way.

  26. He was usually, or always, talking about it in the context of relationships.

  27. Relationship with God.

  28. And relationships with people.

  29. A good example comes when Jesus answered a question on one occasion.

  30. It's found in Matthew chapter 22.

    Matthew 22 chapter mention

  31. It'll be on the screen.

  32. He was asked, Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?

  33. And he said to him,

  34. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.

  35. This is the great and first commandment.

  36. And a second is like it.

  37. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

  38. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.

  39. Well, the Apostle John heard Jesus say that.

  40. In fact, most likely Jesus said that on more than one occasion,

  41. talking about the essence of the law is to love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength,

  42. and love your neighbor as yourself.

  43. John took it to heart.

  44. John wrote about the importance of love in his gospel, the gospel of John that we have in our New Testament.

  45. He really talked a lot about our love for God, but especially our love for one another as Christians,

  46. in his first letter, what we call 1 John in the New Testament.

  47. And then John is the one, he's the only gospel writer,

  48. that tells us about the new commandment to love

  49. that Jesus gave them just before he was arrested and crucified.

  50. It's in John chapter 13.

    John 13 chapter mention

  51. And if you would, turn in your Bible there.

  52. It'll be on the screen, but it'll be something to mark in your Bible if it's not already marked.

  53. The new commandment that Jesus gave, a new kind of love he's given to his followers.

  54. John 13, beginning in verse 34.

  55. A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another.

  56. Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.

  57. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.

  58. It may seem a little strange if you're just reading through the gospel of John, you come across this.

  59. Jesus says,

  60. The new commandment I give to you, that you love one another.

  61. When you've probably read, you know,

  62. Jesus talked about the importance of loving God and loving your neighbor.

  63. But really, if you look at the context, it's not strange.

  64. Jesus is about to wind up his earthly ministry.

  65. Later on that night, he's going to be arrested, tried, the next day crucified.

  66. What Jesus is doing is preparing his disciples for his departure.

  67. And he's telling them how important it is that they, his followers, his disciples,

  68. that they love one another, that they stay united.

  69. They stay together.

  70. You know, this is the new commandment that Jesus issued, not just to them,

  71. but Jesus knew it would be recorded.

  72. It's the new commandment for us as followers of Jesus to love one another.

  73. And we're talking this morning about our brothers and sisters in Christ.

  74. Jesus issued a new commandment about the importance of us loving one another in the church.

  75. Being united to one another like a real family in our church.

  76. I want us to look at these two verses at the new way Jesus calls us to love one another.

  77. And as we go through this, you think, am I loving my brothers and sisters in Christ in this church?

  78. Family.

  79. Like Jesus did.

  80. Just look first.

  81. Jesus gives us a new focus for our love.

  82. Our brothers and sisters in Christ.

  83. That's the first phrase.

  84. Love one another.

  85. And he's talking to his disciples.

  86. The focus of that Old Testament commandment, love your neighbor as yourself.

  87. The focus was on your neighbor.

  88. Now, when Jesus issued that or reminded them of that commandment,

  89. as they heard it, read it from their Old Testament, from the law of Moses,

  90. the Jews understood that very simply.

  91. Love your neighbor means love your fellow Jews and love them only.

  92. Love people who are just like us, they thought.

  93. But that was never what God intended by the commandment.

  94. The way we know that is because Jesus told the story about the good Samaritan.

  95. And the bottom line of the story of the good Samaritan is we, as Jesus' followers, as his people,

  96. we are to be a neighbor to anybody who comes across our path that has a need that we can meet.

  97. Jesus told his disciples, told everybody who heard that day,

  98. your neighbor is anybody in your life that has a need that you can meet.

  99. And we should demonstrate neighbor love by helping them, trying to meet their need if possible.

  100. But you know, it's not just Jews in the first century who thought in terms of just loving their own kind.

  101. Don't we just naturally think the same way?

  102. Think about it.

  103. We may not say it.

  104. We may not have really just dwelled on it so much.

  105. But we tend, don't we, to love people who look like us, who think like us,

  106. who live life the way that we live.

  107. But Jesus issues a new commandment that has a new focus.

  108. Love one another, meaning all you brothers and sisters in Christ.

  109. Think about this.

  110. When we became Christians, we became a part of the family of God.

  111. That's how the church is referred to in several places throughout the New Testament.

  112. We're part of the family of God.

  113. And the family of God is made up of all kinds of people.

  114. Male and female.

  115. Rich and poor.

  116. Black and white.

  117. Northerners and southerners.

  118. Tigers and Gamecocks.

  119. Gamecocks.

  120. Just look around this room.

  121. We're all different, aren't we?

  122. We have different opinions.

  123. Different personalities.

  124. Different interests.

  125. Just look around.

  126. Everybody's different.

  127. Some people are just playing off.

  128. I mean, there's some weird people in this room.

  129. I know some.

  130. But that's the way it is in your family, isn't it?

  131. You've got to.

  132. You have a big family gathering.

  133. You've got some people there.

  134. They're your blood kin.

  135. Deep down, you love them.

  136. But some of them are just as weird and odd as they can possibly be.

  137. If you think, I don't know who that is in my family, you're it.

  138. Because everybody has it.

  139. And if you don't think anybody in this church is sort of odd, weird, or strange, then that means you are the one who is odd, weird, or strange.

  140. Now, how do we develop loving relationships with all of our brothers and sisters in Christ and really be a united church family?

  141. Well, we start by not focusing on our differences.

  142. We don't focus on our differences.

  143. We don't think about the oddness and weirdness of other people.

  144. Because that will always keep us apart.

  145. If you just always think about someone, about how different they are, how different they talk, where they're from, it's totally opposite of you.

  146. If that's all you think about, you'll never really draw close to them, be able to.

  147. What we need to do, first and foremost, is to focus on our most basic, common denominator as Christians.

  148. And that should be, must be, really, our love for Jesus and our desire to please Him.

  149. I mean, if you're a Christian, you love Jesus.

  150. You want to please Jesus.

  151. You know, I know that I don't love Him as much as I should.

  152. I certainly don't please Him as I should.

  153. But I do love Jesus.

  154. I want to be a faithful follower of His.

  155. I do want to please Him.

  156. And as Christians, that is a common thing that we have.

  157. That kind of love for Jesus.

  158. So, in spite of our differences, if we'll first focus on that, this common love for Jesus and desire to please Him,

  159. we can find some unity.

  160. We can find some unity.

  161. We can find that common ground.

  162. And we can live together and work together and enjoy life together as one church family.

  163. Let me ask you, as an individual, don't think about other people.

  164. Think about you.

  165. Are you enjoying that kind of love with your church family?

  166. Are you as a church enjoying that kind of unity because you're bound together by your common love for Jesus?

  167. Now, let's think about what this love that Jesus is talking about does not mean as well as what it does mean.

  168. Loving one another does not mean that you cease to be different.

  169. Loving one another does not mean that you cease to notice how you're different.

  170. You can't do that.

  171. There will always be, in any kind of gathering, even in your extended family, in all seriousness,

  172. there's always going to be different kinds of personalities, different kinds of interests,

  173. different kinds of opinions and so forth.

  174. That's true of the church.

  175. If we talk about loving one another, I want you to be clear.

  176. Everybody in this church will not be best friends.

  177. Think about this.

  178. Even Jesus had an inner circle.

  179. Peter, James, and John.

  180. Think some of the others sort of presented that.

  181. Jesus told Peter, James, and John, I want you to come with me and left the rest of them behind.

  182. I mean, wouldn't you?

  183. It's natural.

  184. It's normal.

  185. We're not going to all see everything eye to die, and that's okay.

  186. Everybody's not going to be best friends.

  187. Put it more bluntly, you won't have warm feelings for everyone in this church.

  188. But you can love them.

  189. You can accept them as your brother or sister in Christ.

  190. Here's another thing.

  191. When Jesus is talking about love, loving one another,

  192. he's really talking more about actions than emotions.

  193. Later on in this passage, this is Jesus in the upper room with the disciples.

  194. John 13, 14, 15, and 16.

  195. Jesus, as he talks with them, as he instructs them,

  196. he's going to say things like,

  197. if you love me, you'll obey me.

  198. Because Jesus defined love more in terms of action than emotion.

  199. There's no doubt that the disciples truly felt loving emotions toward Jesus.

  200. But that was not sufficient for Jesus.

  201. He said, if you love me, do what I say.

  202. There's other passages he's talking about,

  203. we truly love God, we'll obey him.

  204. That's what God wants us to do.

  205. That's how we live out our love.

  206. Such love we're talking about now.

  207. Action love.

  208. That requires that we care about each other.

  209. We're not best friends.

  210. We're not just warm, fuzzy feelings for everybody in this room.

  211. But we care.

  212. And when we love out this,

  213. we care enough to notice when people are going through a rough time.

  214. Or people have certain needs.

  215. And if we have the ability to step up and meet those needs,

  216. love will compel us to do so.

  217. Love will compel us to step in there,

  218. that person that is your brother or sister in Christ.

  219. You don't have a long relationship with them.

  220. You don't have a very close relationship.

  221. But they have a need.

  222. They've got something going on in their life that you,

  223. by God's grace,

  224. you could help them if you would.

  225. So let me just ask you this.

  226. Are you allowing your differences

  227. to keep you at a distance

  228. from other members of this church?

  229. Or

  230. is your common love for Jesus

  231. and your desire to please Him

  232. by loving like this,

  233. are you allowing that to draw you closer

  234. to other people in this church?

  235. Are you allowing it to draw you closer

  236. as a church family?

  237. Is it happening overall?

  238. This passage also tells us

  239. that Jesus gives us a new model for our love.

  240. Love like He loves.

  241. He says,

  242. just as I have loved you.

  243. Love one another just as I have loved you.

  244. The Old Testament command

  245. was to love your neighbor as yourself.

  246. You were the model

  247. for that love,

  248. the way you love yourself.

  249. By the way,

  250. the Old Testament command,

  251. love your neighbor as yourself,

  252. is not a command to love yourself

  253. because

  254. we do that.

  255. Normal people love themselves

  256. and the idea of that,

  257. we take care of ourselves.

  258. We look out for ourselves.

  259. We take relatively good care of our body.

  260. We feed ourselves.

  261. We go to work.

  262. We have money.

  263. We have things.

  264. We buy things for ourselves.

  265. What Jesus is talking about

  266. or what the Old Testament law is talking about,

  267. love your neighbor as yourself.

  268. You care about yourself.

  269. You meet yourself,

  270. your own needs,

  271. the best you can.

  272. Do that for other people.

  273. That was the idea of the Old Testament law.

  274. But here,

  275. Jesus says,

  276. love one another

  277. just as I have loved you.

  278. He's the model for what our love should look like.

  279. I want us to look at two ways

  280. Jesus models how we can love one another

  281. or should love one another.

  282. Number one,

  283. Jesus models a humble,

  284. serving love.

  285. John takes the first 20 verses

  286. of chapter 13.

  287. That's where we are right now.

  288. The first 20 verses describe

  289. Jesus' great example

  290. of humble,

  291. serving love.

  292. He washed his disciples' feet.

  293. Now notice what Jesus said

  294. after he finished

  295. in verse 14,

  296. chapter 13.

  297. If then,

  298. your Lord and teacher,

  299. if I then,

  300. your Lord and teacher,

  301. have washed your feet,

  302. you also ought to wash

  303. one another's feet.

  304. For I have given you an example

  305. that you also should do

  306. just as I have done to you.

  307. Jesus truly humbled himself

  308. to do that, didn't he?

  309. He was their Lord and teacher.

  310. He was above them.

  311. He was their superior,

  312. yet he chose to get down

  313. on his knees

  314. and wash the nasty feet

  315. of his disciples.

  316. And keep in mind,

  317. Jesus knew that within a few hours,

  318. Judas would betray him.

  319. Peter would deny him.

  320. And all of them,

  321. all of them,

  322. would abandon him.

  323. Jesus truly humbled himself

  324. to do what he is for the disciples.

  325. I mean, you think about it.

  326. If Brian's nasty feet

  327. really had to be washed today,

  328. I would at least think about it.

  329. But if I thought,

  330. after this is over,

  331. he's going to tell me,

  332. I don't have any use for you.

  333. Don't ever bother me again.

  334. I ain't washing your feet.

  335. That's why,

  336. isn't that how you feel?

  337. That's normal human nature.

  338. But Jesus does not demonstrate

  339. normal human nature.

  340. He humbled himself

  341. before these men

  342. who were not going to stay with him.

  343. These inferiors.

  344. He washed their feet.

  345. Now, if we're going to love

  346. one another as Jesus loves,

  347. we can't ever think of ourselves

  348. as over superior to anyone

  349. because we really aren't.

  350. All of us,

  351. all human beings

  352. are created in the image of God.

  353. That makes us all

  354. of equal worth and value.

  355. In the church,

  356. we're brothers and sisters in Christ.

  357. we're on the same level.

  358. So we cannot ever consider ourselves

  359. to be above

  360. going out of our way,

  361. being inconvenienced,

  362. do some humble acts of service

  363. for one another.

  364. I want to encourage you this morning.

  365. Think about beginning that

  366. in your home.

  367. to be in the church.

  368. You know, home

  369. is where we really should be

  370. practicing what it means

  371. to be a Christian person.

  372. And I want to encourage you

  373. as parents,

  374. as children,

  375. as brothers and sisters,

  376. we're to love one another

  377. as Jesus loves the church.

  378. At first,

  379. that means humble,

  380. practical acts of service.

  381. I want you to also know,

  382. just real quick here,

  383. Jesus met a real need.

  384. He didn't just do this

  385. out of the blue

  386. for no reason.

  387. I'm sure Brian

  388. doesn't need his feet

  389. washed this morning.

  390. I'm sure he took a shower

  391. at least two or three days ago

  392. anyway,

  393. if not this morning.

  394. But Jesus,

  395. Jesus and his disciples,

  396. they wore sandals everywhere.

  397. Roads were dirt.

  398. At times,

  399. they were dusty.

  400. At times,

  401. they were muddy.

  402. So wherever you went,

  403. when you got there,

  404. your feet would be dirty.

  405. Well,

  406. the disciples should have

  407. washed Jesus' feet

  408. immediately.

  409. They should have washed

  410. their own feet.

  411. They got ready

  412. for the evening meal

  413. as they were going

  414. to do with Jesus.

  415. But they didn't.

  416. So Jesus did what needed

  417. to be done.

  418. He washed their feet.

  419. Now,

  420. if we're going to love

  421. one another

  422. as Jesus loves us,

  423. we've got to get involved

  424. in one another's lives

  425. to the point

  426. where we notice needs.

  427. we can see

  428. in someone's life

  429. there's something

  430. going on.

  431. They need some help.

  432. We've got to notice

  433. the needs

  434. and then we've got

  435. to do what we need

  436. to have to do

  437. if we're able

  438. to meet their needs.

  439. So let me just ask you,

  440. how observant are you

  441. of the people

  442. in your Sunday school class

  443. or other small groups

  444. you're in?

  445. It's not going to happen

  446. much in this kind of gathering.

  447. This is a worship service.

  448. We've come together

  449. to praise God,

  450. to pray together,

  451. to study His Word,

  452. but we don't really get

  453. to know one another here.

  454. It's going to be

  455. in small groups.

  456. It's going to be

  457. away from the church

  458. doing things together.

  459. We've got to notice

  460. we've got to care

  461. and we've got to act

  462. because we're going to love

  463. what Jesus calls us to love.

  464. Now,

  465. Jesus doesn't just model

  466. humble servant type love.

  467. He models sacrificial love.

  468. Jesus repeated

  469. this new commandment

  470. and gave the ultimate example

  471. of sacrifice

  472. in chapter 15 of John.

  473. We're in 13.

  474. Move over to chapter 15.

  475. Look at this.

  476. Jesus said,

  477. This is my commandment

  478. that you love one another

  479. as I have loved you.

  480. Greater love

  481. has no one than this

  482. than someone

  483. to lay down his life

  484. for his friends.

  485. Jesus loved us

  486. enough to lay down

  487. his life

  488. for us

  489. when there was nothing

  490. about us

  491. that should compel him

  492. to do that.

  493. From motivation of love,

  494. Jesus chose

  495. in obedience to his heavenly Father,

  496. but he chose

  497. to die on the cross

  498. as our substitute.

  499. He suffered the wrath

  500. of God

  501. that we deserve

  502. because of our sin.

  503. Jesus died on the cross

  504. as our substitute.

  505. He paid the penalty

  506. for our sins.

  507. And by doing that,

  508. Jesus satisfied

  509. God's justice.

  510. The penalty for sin

  511. is death.

  512. And Jesus died

  513. for our sins.

  514. He died so that we

  515. wouldn't have to.

  516. He satisfied God's justice

  517. so that we

  518. could experience

  519. God's forgiveness

  520. and know

  521. the love of God

  522. as our heavenly Father.

  523. If you're not a Christian,

  524. I want you to understand

  525. that Jesus died

  526. on that cross

  527. to save you

  528. to pay the penalty

  529. for your sins.

  530. And if you will

  531. confess your sin,

  532. repent of your sin,

  533. turn from your sin,

  534. and trust Jesus

  535. that He died for you.

  536. He paid the penalty

  537. for your sins.

  538. And commit your life

  539. to Him

  540. as your Lord.

  541. He will save you,

  542. forgive you,

  543. make you a child of God.

  544. Put the love of God

  545. in your heart

  546. so that you can

  547. love other people

  548. like Jesus loves.

  549. If you are a Christian,

  550. you have experienced

  551. the benefits

  552. of Jesus' death.

  553. You've experienced

  554. the benefits

  555. of His sacrificial love.

  556. Now Jesus calls you

  557. demonstrated.

  558. Do like I have done

  559. for you.

  560. You know,

  561. most of us,

  562. we're never ever

  563. going to be called

  564. to give our life

  565. for another person.

  566. Most of us.

  567. The majority of us.

  568. But,

  569. we are called

  570. to demonstrate

  571. sacrificial love

  572. for other people.

  573. I want you to look

  574. at something

  575. that John also wrote

  576. in his first letter

  577. that talks about

  578. self-sacrifice,

  579. self-giving.

  580. It's in 1 John chapter 3.

    1 John 3 chapter mention

  581. John writes,

  582. But if anyone has

  583. the world's goods

  584. and sees his brother

  585. in need,

  586. yet closes his heart

  587. against him,

  588. how does God's love

  589. abide in him?

  590. Little children,

  591. let us not love

  592. in word or talk,

  593. but in deed

  594. and in truth.

  595. We can't even think,

  596. shouldn't even think

  597. of ourselves

  598. as loving people

  599. if we just close our eyes

  600. to what's going on

  601. in their life

  602. and refuse to get involved

  603. when there's something

  604. that we could do

  605. to help them.

  606. Following Jesus'

  607. model of sacrificial love

  608. will sometimes require us

  609. to give of ourselves,

  610. give of our money,

  611. give of our talent,

  612. some of the abilities

  613. that we have

  614. to meet the needs

  615. of a brother or sister.

  616. We can do that.

  617. Are you in the habit

  618. of demonstrating

  619. sacrificial love

  620. in your home,

  621. first,

  622. and in this church?

  623. Are you living out

  624. what Jesus said

  625. when he told us

  626. to love one another

  627. as he loves us?

  628. What you see next

  629. in verse 35?

  630. Jesus gives us

  631. a new purpose

  632. for our love.

  633. He says,

  634. and the idea

  635. is to demonstrate

  636. that we are Christians

  637. and be a positive witness.

  638. Jesus says it like this,

  639. by this all people

  640. will know

  641. that you are my disciples

  642. if you have love

  643. for one another.

  644. Jesus' commandment

  645. for us to love

  646. one another

  647. is given

  648. so that

  649. if we'll do it,

  650. it'll have

  651. such a positive

  652. impact on people,

  653. it'll make a difference

  654. in their life.

  655. If we truly love

  656. one another like Jesus,

  657. people will know

  658. that we are Christians

  659. by our acts of love.

  660. He's saying

  661. that our love for him

  662. should be attractive

  663. to other people.

  664. Attractive love

  665. is used by God

  666. to draw people

  667. to himself,

  668. to draw people

  669. to churches.

  670. You know,

  671. when you people

  672. come here to this church

  673. and get involved

  674. for a few months,

  675. what will they observe

  676. about how you relate

  677. to one another

  678. in the various

  679. small groups

  680. that are here?

  681. You people come in,

  682. they don't really know you,

  683. but they're in your

  684. Sunday school class,

  685. they're in some small group.

  686. What will they observe

  687. over time

  688. about your love

  689. for one another?

  690. Will they see evidence

  691. tangible evidence

  692. of what you're doing

  693. in one another's lives,

  694. how you're sharing

  695. life together,

  696. or that will they

  697. just see a bunch

  698. of different people

  699. who come together

  700. for superficial fellowship

  701. and then just go

  702. on their way

  703. when they leave here

  704. and forget about

  705. one another?

  706. Let's make this

  707. more personal.

  708. Do you,

  709. as an individual,

  710. try to help new people

  711. feel loved

  712. and accepted

  713. in this church?

  714. do you try?

  715. Do you put forth

  716. an effort

  717. to help them

  718. feel like they belong?

  719. They're a part

  720. of the family.

  721. Lisa and I

  722. have learned

  723. what it's like

  724. to join a new church

  725. where you know

  726. very few people

  727. at all.

  728. Prior,

  729. for the last

  730. 40 years,

  731. when we've gone

  732. to a new church,

  733. I was a pastor

  734. and it's very easy

  735. to get to know

  736. people,

  737. people want to

  738. get to know you,

  739. it just happens.

  740. You don't have

  741. to do anything.

  742. It just happens.

  743. But when you're

  744. not the pastor

  745. and you just go

  746. into a church

  747. where you don't

  748. really know

  749. anybody,

  750. you know very few,

  751. it's just

  752. way hard.

  753. You feel like

  754. a stranger.

  755. You are an outsider.

  756. We know

  757. what it feels like

  758. to be that way.

  759. Never really

  760. knew

  761. what that was like.

  762. Being a part

  763. of a church family

  764. doesn't happen

  765. quickly.

  766. And it certainly

  767. doesn't happen

  768. automatically.

  769. It takes time

  770. and effort.

  771. I want to say

  772. to you,

  773. if you're a visitor

  774. or you're a relative

  775. of a new member

  776. here,

  777. you've got to

  778. do your part

  779. to feel at home.

  780. You've got to

  781. get involved.

  782. You will never

  783. feel a part of

  784. this church family

  785. if all you come

  786. to is the worship

  787. service.

  788. You've got to

  789. get involved.

  790. In small groups,

  791. you've got to

  792. even get involved

  793. with people.

  794. And then you've

  795. got to be

  796. patient

  797. and give it

  798. time.

  799. Because relationships

  800. don't just

  801. birth and blossom

  802. overnight.

  803. Now, if you're

  804. a long-time

  805. member,

  806. some of these

  807. old members

  808. I was referring

  809. to a while ago,

  810. I encourage you,

  811. make a real

  812. effort to get

  813. to know

  814. new members.

  815. There's been

  816. people at

  817. Village Church

  818. since we've

  819. been there

  820. that have come

  821. up to us

  822. and just

  823. introduced

  824. themselves,

  825. tell us what

  826. they do.

  827. We've met

  828. people who are

  829. retired like us

  830. and they want

  831. to know,

  832. you know,

  833. where are you

  834. from?

  835. And they tell

  836. us about

  837. themselves.

  838. They make

  839. it a point.

  840. And they've

  841. helped us

  842. to get to

  843. know them,

  844. break down

  845. some barriers,

  846. some fears.

  847. I want to

  848. encourage you,

  849. long-time

  850. members,

  851. you have a

  852. responsibility

  853. before God

  854. to welcome

  855. new members

  856. into this

  857. church and

  858. to help

  859. them.

  860. belong.

  861. Feel like

  862. this is my

  863. church family.

  864. Now,

  865. loving one

  866. another like

  867. Jesus is

  868. not something

  869. that comes

  870. naturally to

  871. us and

  872. it's not

  873. easy.

  874. The last

  875. thing we're

  876. going to

  877. look at is

  878. Jesus promises

  879. that God

  880. will give us

  881. what we need

  882. to do.

  883. We can love

  884. one another

  885. as he loves

  886. us.

  887. Fourth,

  888. Jesus promises

  889. us new power

  890. to love,

  891. the power of

  892. the Holy Spirit.

  893. Jesus went

  894. on that

  895. same night,

  896. John chapter

    John 14 chapter mention

  897. 14,

  898. beginning in

  899. verse 15,

  900. he says

  901. this,

  902. if you

  903. love me,

  904. you will

  905. keep my

  906. commandments

  907. and I

  908. will ask

  909. the Father

  910. and he

  911. will give

  912. you another

  913. helper to

  914. be with you

  915. forever.

  916. Even the

  917. spirit of

  918. truth,

  919. whom the

  920. world cannot

  921. receive,

  922. because it

  923. neither sees

  924. him or

  925. knows him,

  926. you know

  927. him for

  928. he dwells

  929. with you

  930. and will

  931. be in you.

  932. ever since

  933. the day

  934. of Pentecost,

  935. you read

  936. about Acts

  937. 2,

  938. when a

  939. person becomes

  940. a Christian,

  941. the spirit

  942. of God

  943. comes to

  944. live within

  945. them.

  946. The spirit

  947. of God

  948. lives in

  949. you and

  950. me if

  951. we're

  952. Christians.

  953. Now Paul

  954. explains how

  955. we're empowered

  956. by the Holy

  957. Spirit.

  958. He says this

  959. in Romans 5,

  960. he says,

  961. God's love

  962. has been poured

  963. into our

  964. hearts through

  965. the Holy

  966. Spirit who

  967. has been

  968. given to

  969. us.

  970. God's love

  971. has been poured

  972. into our

  973. hearts through

  974. the Holy

  975. Spirit who

  976. has been

  977. given to

  978. us.

  979. If you're

  980. a Christian,

  981. you can love

  982. others as

  983. Jesus loves

  984. you because

  985. the Holy

  986. Spirit,

  987. the spirit

  988. of God,

  989. the spirit

  990. of Christ

  991. will enable

  992. you.

  993. I love

  994. what Paul

  995. says in

  996. Philippians

  997. 2,

  998. 13 about

  999. God giving

  1000. us the

  1001. desire and

  1002. the ability

  1003. to please

  1004. him.

  1005. I want you

  1006. to look at

  1007. this.

  1008. For it is

  1009. God who

  1010. works in

  1011. you both

  1012. to will,

  1013. to want,

  1014. to desire,

  1015. and to

  1016. work for

  1017. his good

  1018. pleasure.

  1019. We can

  1020. love one

  1021. another in

  1022. our church

  1023. family if

  1024. we want

  1025. to because

  1026. the Holy

  1027. Spirit living

  1028. within us

  1029. will help

  1030. us.

  1031. He'll give

  1032. us the

  1033. desire to

  1034. love.

  1035. He'll give

  1036. us the

  1037. ability to

  1038. do things

  1039. to demonstrate

  1040. our love

  1041. if we'll

  1042. obey him.

  1043. You know,

  1044. we're never

  1045. going to love

  1046. one another

  1047. perfectly like

  1048. Jesus loves

  1049. us.

  1050. No one can

  1051. love like

  1052. he loves

  1053. exactly.

  1054. But if we

  1055. make it our

  1056. goal, our

  1057. desire, we

  1058. pray, we

  1059. ask God to

  1060. help us, we

  1061. put forth

  1062. effort, we

  1063. can love

  1064. one another

  1065. by the

  1066. power of

  1067. the Holy

  1068. Spirit to

  1069. some degree.

  1070. All of

  1071. us.

  1072. And I

  1073. want to ask

  1074. you now,

  1075. will you make

  1076. that commitment

  1077. this morning?

  1078. Will you

  1079. ask God to

  1080. help you to

  1081. love your

  1082. brothers and

  1083. sisters in

  1084. Christ first

  1085. in this

  1086. church?

  1087. To love

  1088. that Jesus

  1089. has shown

  1090. you.

  1091. Will you

  1092. also ask God

  1093. to help you

  1094. to love

  1095. the people

  1096. in your

  1097. house, in

  1098. your home?

  1099. That same

  1100. kind of love,

  1101. a sacrificial

  1102. love, a

  1103. serving love.

  1104. I want to

  1105. close by

  1106. reading the

  1107. best description

  1108. of Christian

  1109. love ever

  1110. written.

  1111. It's in

  1112. 1 Corinthians

  1113. 13, beginning

  1114. in verse 4.

  1115. Paul writes,

  1116. love is

  1117. patient and

  1118. kind.

  1119. Love does

  1120. not envy

  1121. or boast.

  1122. It is not

  1123. arrogant or

  1124. rude.

  1125. It does not

  1126. insist on

  1127. its own

  1128. way.

  1129. It is not

  1130. irritable or

  1131. resentful.

  1132. It does not

  1133. rejoice at

  1134. wrongdoing,

  1135. but rejoices

  1136. with the

  1137. truth.

  1138. Love bears

  1139. all things,

  1140. believes all

  1141. things,

  1142. hopes all

  1143. things,

  1144. endures all

  1145. things.

  1146. Love never

  1147. ends.

  1148. That's how

  1149. Jesus loves

  1150. us.

  1151. I encourage

  1152. you now,

  1153. ask God to

  1154. help you

  1155. to show

  1156. that kind

  1157. of love

  1158. to your

  1159. family and

  1160. your church

  1161. family every

  1162. day.

  1163. let's pray

  1164. together.

  1165. Father,

  1166. we need

  1167. help to

  1168. love like

  1169. Jesus

  1170. loved.

  1171. But we

  1172. know from

  1173. the promise

  1174. of your

  1175. word that

  1176. you have

  1177. given us

  1178. all we

  1179. need in

  1180. the

  1181. indwelling

  1182. Holy Spirit.

  1183. You have

  1184. poured your

  1185. love into

  1186. us through

  1187. him.

  1188. So we

  1189. pray now,

  1190. Father,

  1191. convict us

  1192. of our

  1193. sin.

  1194. Help us

  1195. to be

  1196. truly

  1197. repentant of

  1198. indifference,

  1199. of unconcern,

  1200. of a lack

  1201. of love.

  1202. Help us,

  1203. Father, to

  1204. make the

  1205. commitment that

  1206. by your

  1207. grace, by

  1208. the power of

  1209. your Spirit,

  1210. we will put

  1211. forth the

  1212. effort to

  1213. love, to

  1214. meet needs,

  1215. and really

  1216. work on
