  1. Speaker: Welcome to Waterville Baptist

  2. Speaker: Church, a place where you can

  3. Speaker: grow, connect and serve on your

  4. Speaker: spiritual journey.

  5. Speaker: We're delighted to have you join us as we explore the teaching of

  6. Speaker: God's Word and Jesus Christ.

  7. Speaker: Now let's turn it over to our speaker and today's message.

  8. Speaker: Guys, listen, God stirred my heart.

  9. Speaker: And if you have your Bible, I

  10. Speaker: want you to find Romans chapter

  11. Speaker: eight.

  12. Speaker: The message is not going to be very long.

  13. Speaker: It's going to be very pointed and direct.

  14. Speaker: I'm not going to give you a

  15. Speaker: bunch of really clever jokes or

  16. Speaker: stories.

  17. Speaker: Go ahead and go to the next slide.

  18. Speaker: I'm going to give you what God's

  19. Speaker: put in my heart while I was

  20. Speaker: there.

  21. Speaker: And this is personal conviction,

  22. Speaker: but I pray that you know this

  23. Speaker: about me.

  24. Speaker: I always tell people this when I

  25. Speaker: ever have the opportunity to do

  26. Speaker: this, I preach from the

  27. Speaker: overflow.

  28. Speaker: So I pray that God will use this in your life the same way he's

  29. Speaker: been using it in mine.

  30. Speaker: So while I was down there, you know, working for the Lord, God

  31. Speaker: opened my eyes to a lot of things that I'd become very

  32. Speaker: indifferent and numb to in my life, things that I hadn't

  33. Speaker: considered in a long time.

  34. Speaker: And when I was there, the Holy Spirit, on a daily basis was

  35. Speaker: speaking to me about purpose, about what purpose truly is,

  36. Speaker: what the meaning of life is, and all the different things that I

  37. Speaker: saw there that just really caused me to press into the

  38. Speaker: heart of God on this issue.

  39. Speaker: It blew my mind.

  40. Speaker: So Lily already mentioned that

  41. Speaker: the first day we were in the

  42. Speaker: sanctuary.

  43. Speaker: And, you know, Carol said, do the kids want to share anything

  44. Speaker: with the people?

  45. Speaker: So I, I, I told Lily, I said, you're going to share your

  46. Speaker: testimony in a minute.

  47. Speaker: I didn't ask her.

  48. Speaker: God told me like she needs to do it.

  49. Speaker: So as the student pastor, I made

  50. Speaker: her very uncomfortable in a very

  51. Speaker: quick moment.

  52. Speaker: I did not tell her that when we get there, you need to be ready

  53. Speaker: to share the gospel, share your testimony And that moment, God

  54. Speaker: stirred my heart and said, Lily's a new believer.

  55. Speaker: She has something to a testimony to share with these people.

  56. Speaker: So I said, Lily, you're going to share your testimony.

  57. Speaker: The look, guys, I can't recreate it for you.

  58. Speaker: The look on her face, I mean, she just turned ghost white.

  59. Speaker: She looked like someone just shot her best hunting dog.

  60. Speaker: I mean, just emptied herself of all being and was just like, oh

  61. Speaker: my goodness, what did he just ask me to do?

  62. Speaker: And so while we were kind of doing that part of the service

  63. Speaker: and she's over there, I keep looking over at her because now

  64. Speaker: I'm a little bit worried.

  65. Speaker: You know, I don't want to I need

  66. Speaker: to press and challenge the

  67. Speaker: students.

  68. Speaker: But I also don't want to, you

  69. Speaker: know, I don't want to ruin their

  70. Speaker: lives.

  71. Speaker: Right.

  72. Speaker: And so I'm looking over at her the whole time, and she's over

  73. Speaker: in her seat, and she's just.

  74. Speaker: You could just see it on her face.

  75. Speaker: I'm like, oh my goodness, oh my goodness.

  76. Speaker: So I began to pray.

  77. Speaker: I'm like, Lord, please Holy

  78. Speaker: Spirit, just be with Lily

  79. Speaker: through this.

  80. Speaker: Help her to realize that she can do this.

  81. Speaker: And she was visibly like shaking when she gets up to go up there.

  82. Speaker: And she started to talk and I was I was humbled and crushed.

  83. Speaker: Here was this new Christian who

  84. Speaker: had every reason in the world to

  85. Speaker: jump out of that second floor

  86. Speaker: window.

  87. Speaker: When I told her that standing up in front of people, she had no

  88. Speaker: idea who they were.

  89. Speaker: She'd never met him before that day.

  90. Speaker: Adults.

  91. Speaker: It's not just kids.

  92. Speaker: Adults.

  93. Speaker: Kids.

  94. Speaker: Her student pastor, a couple of her, her.

  95. Speaker: Her brothers and sisters from the student ministry.

  96. Speaker: This whole room, sixty, seventy people here she is never once

  97. Speaker: having done this in her life.

  98. Speaker: And she begins to speak about,

  99. Speaker: she says, what am I supposed to

  100. Speaker: say?

  101. Speaker: I said, just tell people why you follow Jesus.

  102. Speaker: That's a that's that's what I gave her.

  103. Speaker: She's like, what am I supposed to say?

  104. Speaker: Tell people why you follow Jesus.

  105. Speaker: And she did.

  106. Speaker: She gave a testimony and I videoed it.

  107. Speaker: I videoed it because I wanted to send it to her family, to her

  108. Speaker: mom, to her grandmother, to see the fruit of God in her life.

  109. Speaker: It absolutely.

  110. Speaker: I was crying like the video when you watch it, the screen shaking

  111. Speaker: because I was in tears listening to her share her testimony.

  112. Speaker: Maddox gets up there the first

  113. Speaker: day and he was told, you know,

  114. Speaker: you need to be prepared to have

  115. Speaker: a lesson to share with, with

  116. Speaker: people.

  117. Speaker: Now, I thought Carol kind of met kids.

  118. Speaker: She met everybody.

  119. Speaker: She she put him on the spot and

  120. Speaker: he went up there and I did not

  121. Speaker: he he I said, have something to

  122. Speaker: share.

  123. Speaker: And I asked him the day before, I said, are you ready to share?

  124. Speaker: He's like, yeah.

  125. Speaker: So, you know, as a father of a teenager, I'm thinking to

  126. Speaker: myself, are you ready to share?

  127. Speaker: Are you sure?

  128. Speaker: I'm like, do you want me to look at your stuff?

  129. Speaker: Do you want me to help you?

  130. Speaker: And he's like, no, I'm good.

  131. Speaker: I'm like, you're good.

  132. Speaker: He's like, yeah, I'm good.

  133. Speaker: So I had no idea what was about to happen.

  134. Speaker: So now, just like Lily, he gets up there.

  135. Speaker: Now I'm over there going, oh, geez.

  136. Speaker: Oh, oh.

  137. Speaker: Uh. And then he starts to speak.

  138. Speaker: Guess what came out again?

  139. Speaker: The cell phone.

  140. Speaker: And I started to video the message, mainly so I could steal

  141. Speaker: it later on.

  142. Speaker: I'm not going to show you the video because I might preach it

  143. Speaker: someday from the pulpit.

  144. Speaker: I don't want you to think I plagiarize the whole thing.

  145. Speaker: But I started to video it and

  146. Speaker: I'm sitting there videoing, and

  147. Speaker: I'm just I can't keep it

  148. Speaker: together.

  149. Speaker: I'm crying my eyes out and my heart is in my stomach.

  150. Speaker: And I videoed as much as I could, and I sent it to Belton

  151. Speaker: and me and him.

  152. Speaker: We talk all the time, and I sent him a little confession.

  153. Speaker: I'm like this, I was we sang the song I'm Undone by by God.

  154. Speaker: I was undone by God that day.

  155. Speaker: Listen to Lily and Maddox.

  156. Speaker: I got so hysterically, so hysterical when I was crying.

  157. Speaker: Like I couldn't keep it together.

  158. Speaker: I had to leave.

  159. Speaker: I went down into one of those

  160. Speaker: rooms I cleaned out a couple

  161. Speaker: times ago, and I leaned up

  162. Speaker: against the wall in the corner,

  163. Speaker: and I cried for a good thirty

  164. Speaker: minutes.

  165. Speaker: And I prayed, cried and prayed,

  166. Speaker: cried and prayed Because God

  167. Speaker: showed me something there about

  168. Speaker: what the true purpose of life

  169. Speaker: is.

  170. Speaker: And he put a word in my heart while I was in that dark room,

  171. Speaker: just me and God.

  172. Speaker: Praying, crying, praying about what I'd just seen.

  173. Speaker: This new believer speaking the truth of Christ.

  174. Speaker: The people she never met with the boldness that I'm being.

  175. Speaker: If I'm being honest, it's hard pressed to find within the

  176. Speaker: American church, sometimes unafraid, unashamed, she stood

  177. Speaker: in the presence of these people and proclaimed the name of Jesus

  178. Speaker: and what he did in her life.

  179. Speaker: As a father.

  180. Speaker: Who's often wondered, like,

  181. Speaker: what's my son's life going to

  182. Speaker: be?

  183. Speaker: Is he going to be raised to know

  184. Speaker: the Lord, to serve God, to hear

  185. Speaker: him preach?

  186. Speaker: And this is what I told Belton, and he, he he told me back the

  187. Speaker: same thing, the confidence that he preached the gospel with and

  188. Speaker: I mean the gospel was perfect.

  189. Speaker: It was shared beautifully articulated, theologically as

  190. Speaker: precise as you can be.

  191. Speaker: But the thing that struck me was the boldness.

  192. Speaker: And I thought to myself, when's

  193. Speaker: the last time I stood in front

  194. Speaker: of people with that same

  195. Speaker: boldness?

  196. Speaker: When's the last time I did that?

  197. Speaker: I have the privilege of working in ministry and teaching and

  198. Speaker: being able to disciple and to do things like this.

  199. Speaker: And I can do it comfortably because I'm polished.

  200. Speaker: I've done it a lot of times.

  201. Speaker: But I began to really feel in my heart that just because you're

  202. Speaker: polished at doing something and you do it frequently, that

  203. Speaker: doesn't mean you're doing it the right way, or that you're doing

  204. Speaker: it with the boldness that God calls you to do it with.

  205. Speaker: God crushed me in that moment, but he also built me up.

  206. Speaker: And he put this word in my heart in Romans chapter eight.

  207. Speaker: But you just heard from Lily and Maddox.

  208. Speaker: This trip to Guatemala was not simply about where we went or

  209. Speaker: what we did.

  210. Speaker: It was about what God is doing in us during our time, God

  211. Speaker: stirred my heart to remember and reflect on the true meaning of

  212. Speaker: the purpose of life.

  213. Speaker: When I watched those two

  214. Speaker: students step out of their

  215. Speaker: comfort zone and serve others

  216. Speaker: and wrestle with what really,

  217. Speaker: you know, was going on, it

  218. Speaker: forced me to ask this deeper

  219. Speaker: question.

  220. Speaker: And here's the question I want

  221. Speaker: you to think about in these last

  222. Speaker: few minutes.

  223. Speaker: Why is God ultimately working in our lives?

  224. Speaker: What is he doing?

  225. Speaker: What is our purpose?

  226. Speaker: Romans chapter eight answers that question.

  227. Speaker: So we're going to very quickly just look at these three verses.

  228. Speaker: What these three verses in

  229. Speaker: Romans, Romans chapter eight

  230. Speaker: tell us is this, that God is

  231. Speaker: always at work in our lives not

  232. Speaker: to make us comfortable or

  233. Speaker: successful or impressive, but to

  234. Speaker: conform us to the image of his

  235. Speaker: son.

  236. Speaker: So I want to look really quickly

  237. Speaker: at what Scripture says about

  238. Speaker: purpose.

  239. Speaker: So find Romans chapter eight.

  240. Speaker: We're going to read just very quickly through verses twenty

  241. Speaker: eight through thirty.

  242. Speaker: And as you find that we're going

  243. Speaker: to ask God just to bless us with

  244. Speaker: his divine wisdom in this

  245. Speaker: moment, and that he be

  246. Speaker: glorified.

  247. Speaker: Heavenly father, as we close out

  248. Speaker: and we take a few minutes to

  249. Speaker: consider the truth of your word

  250. Speaker: this morning.

  251. Speaker: I pray, father, that you be glorified and exalted, that you

  252. Speaker: would speak to our hearts in these few minutes about what the

  253. Speaker: true meaning of life is, what the true purpose of the believer

  254. Speaker: is in Christ Jesus.

  255. Speaker: Help us to reflect on our own

  256. Speaker: lives and ask ourselves this

  257. Speaker: question.

  258. Speaker: Are we fulfilling the purpose

  259. Speaker: that you've restored in our

  260. Speaker: life?

  261. Speaker: Are we are we directing

  262. Speaker: everything about ourselves

  263. Speaker: towards the God given purpose of

  264. Speaker: being conformed to the image of

  265. Speaker: Christ?

  266. Speaker: God, stir the hearts of your people.

  267. Speaker: In these next few minutes, we pray that you'd be exalted and

  268. Speaker: glorified in all things.

  269. Speaker: In the name of Jesus.

  270. Speaker: We ask these things with thanksgiving.

  271. Speaker: Amen.

  272. Speaker: So I want to share these three verses with you very quickly.

  273. Speaker: So we all know verse eight twenty eight very well.

  274. Speaker: You've probably heard it a million times.

  275. Speaker: And we know that God works all

  276. Speaker: things for the good of those who

  277. Speaker: love him.

  278. Speaker: And this verse is often cited

  279. Speaker: when people are going through

  280. Speaker: very difficult times in their

  281. Speaker: life.

  282. Speaker: They have an illness, a

  283. Speaker: financial crisis, a relationship

  284. Speaker: situation.

  285. Speaker: When things are difficult.

  286. Speaker: You hear this come up all the time.

  287. Speaker: Just know that God is working all things to the good of those

  288. Speaker: who love him, those called according to his purposes.

  289. Speaker: But just saying to remember that

  290. Speaker: every time I try to encourage

  291. Speaker: somebody with that, it's almost

  292. Speaker: like, you know, saying to do it

  293. Speaker: and doing it are two different

  294. Speaker: things.

  295. Speaker: Amen.

  296. Speaker: It's easy to say, Trust God, trust God.

  297. Speaker: But what if someone turns around and ask you this?

  298. Speaker: Well, how can God work all

  299. Speaker: things to the good of those who

  300. Speaker: love him?

  301. Speaker: How can I take this terminal illness, this loss of job, this

  302. Speaker: financial crisis, this relationship problem, poverty,

  303. Speaker: whatever it is, addiction.

  304. Speaker: How can I how can I, as a believer, look at that and and

  305. Speaker: say that God's working there.

  306. Speaker: One of the biggest barriers

  307. Speaker: people erect between themselves

  308. Speaker: and God is that how could a good

  309. Speaker: God allow such terrible

  310. Speaker: suffering?

  311. Speaker: But if you read on just a little bit into Romans chapter eight,

  312. Speaker: that very question is answered.

  313. Speaker: So look at verses twenty nine and thirty.

  314. Speaker: It says here after it tells us and we know talking about

  315. Speaker: believers, and we know that God works all things to the good.

  316. Speaker: And the word good actually means

  317. Speaker: the ultimate good, the greater

  318. Speaker: good.

  319. Speaker: God works all things to the

  320. Speaker: ultimate good of those who love

  321. Speaker: him, those called according to

  322. Speaker: his purposes.

  323. Speaker: And here's what it goes on to

  324. Speaker: say in the word it says in verse

  325. Speaker: twenty nine, for whom he

  326. Speaker: foreknew.

  327. Speaker: The word foreknow doesn't mean like knows beforehand.

  328. Speaker: The word foreknow that you read

  329. Speaker: in the Bible is an intimate

  330. Speaker: knowing.

  331. Speaker: It literally means to set your affection upon.

  332. Speaker: So those whom God saw, that he set his heart upon you and I.

  333. Speaker: Here's what he did.

  334. Speaker: Those whom he foreknew, he also predestined, predestined to be

  335. Speaker: conformed To the image of his son, that he might be the

  336. Speaker: firstborn among many brethren.

  337. Speaker: And even further, listen to what God says here in verse thirty.

  338. Speaker: Moreover whom he predestined, these he called, whom he called,

  339. Speaker: these he justified, and whom he justified, he also glorified.

  340. Speaker: Here God does a couple things.

  341. Speaker: In verse twenty eight, God makes a promise.

  342. Speaker: God makes a promise that God

  343. Speaker: does not waste any part of your

  344. Speaker: life.

  345. Speaker: God doesn't waste a moment in your life.

  346. Speaker: There's no pointless suffering for the follower of Jesus.

  347. Speaker: Everything in your life, on the

  348. Speaker: mountaintop and in the valley,

  349. Speaker: God is with you and God is

  350. Speaker: working.

  351. Speaker: He makes this promise and our gods are promise keeper.

  352. Speaker: Amen.

  353. Speaker: He wastes nothing in your life.

  354. Speaker: Anything you endure all the suffering that fills life.

  355. Speaker: Because we live in a broken world marred by sin.

  356. Speaker: We have to endure those things.

  357. Speaker: Our God is so powerful and so

  358. Speaker: great and so good that he can

  359. Speaker: work even what the world sees as

  360. Speaker: nothing but pointless evil to

  361. Speaker: the ultimate good of those who

  362. Speaker: love him.

  363. Speaker: God wastes nothing in your life.

  364. Speaker: But the question still stands how do how does God use even our

  365. Speaker: suffering for good?

  366. Speaker: How can something so terrible?

  367. Speaker: The things we, we, we see in the world.

  368. Speaker: And I don't want to put names on them, but you know, in your mind

  369. Speaker: you're already thinking about some of those things.

  370. Speaker: You're thinking about them right now.

  371. Speaker: Those things that are in your

  372. Speaker: mind right now, that suffering

  373. Speaker: you see in the world, how can

  374. Speaker: God possibly work that to the

  375. Speaker: ultimate good of those who love

  376. Speaker: him?

  377. Speaker: So in verse twenty nine, he

  378. Speaker: tells us about the true meaning

  379. Speaker: of life.

  380. Speaker: Here's the problem that every person in this world faces.

  381. Speaker: Everyone you, I, everyone.

  382. Speaker: God gave us a divine purpose.

  383. Speaker: Genesis one, chapter twenty.

  384. Speaker: Genesis one, verse twenty seven.

  385. Speaker: It says, God created him in his image.

  386. Speaker: He created them.

  387. Speaker: Male and female were created in the image of God.

  388. Speaker: Now the image of God is not just about like having

  389. Speaker: characteristics that God has.

  390. Speaker: Being an image bearer is

  391. Speaker: actually really about

  392. Speaker: representation.

  393. Speaker: And we know this because if you

  394. Speaker: read verse twenty seven, God

  395. Speaker: says this.

  396. Speaker: He says, be fruitful and multiply.

  397. Speaker: Fill the earth and subdue it.

  398. Speaker: He gave man a purpose.

  399. Speaker: He created this world for us for his glory.

  400. Speaker: He placed us here in his image to rule over the earth and

  401. Speaker: subdue it in his name.

  402. Speaker: We were to be his representative on earth.

  403. Speaker: But you know what Satan did?

  404. Speaker: He told us a lie.

  405. Speaker: He made us think that God's trying to hold us down, that if

  406. Speaker: we want to find true purpose and meaning, it's not God given.

  407. Speaker: We make life what it is.

  408. Speaker: And he tempted Eve, and he

  409. Speaker: tempted Adam, and they gave into

  410. Speaker: that temptation, and they let

  411. Speaker: their flesh bear fruit in their

  412. Speaker: life, and they sinned against

  413. Speaker: God.

  414. Speaker: And now you have this separation, this, this, this

  415. Speaker: damage that was done by sin.

  416. Speaker: God is so good and so pure and so holy.

  417. Speaker: He cannot be in fellowship with someone who's a sinner.

  418. Speaker: He's so just.

  419. Speaker: He can't let sin go unpunished.

  420. Speaker: If he let one sin go unpunished,

  421. Speaker: there'd be no such thing as

  422. Speaker: justice.

  423. Speaker: If he let one sin go unpunished,

  424. Speaker: all the terrible things that we

  425. Speaker: hate in this world, there would

  426. Speaker: never be any ultimate justice

  427. Speaker: for those people, for us, for

  428. Speaker: others, there'd be no justice

  429. Speaker: without judgment.

  430. Speaker: God is so righteous he can't leave sin unpunished.

  431. Speaker: He wouldn't be God if he did.

  432. Speaker: And I'm thankful for that.

  433. Speaker: But you know what?

  434. Speaker: That puts you and I on the hook for our sin.

  435. Speaker: We were created in the image of

  436. Speaker: God to represent God on this

  437. Speaker: earth.

  438. Speaker: To when people look at us, see

  439. Speaker: God, and that image was

  440. Speaker: distorted and damaged by sin and

  441. Speaker: it corrupted our minds and our

  442. Speaker: hearts.

  443. Speaker: So now here's what we do as

  444. Speaker: people we spend our whole lives

  445. Speaker: fumbling around the dark,

  446. Speaker: looking for purpose, looking for

  447. Speaker: meaning.

  448. Speaker: Some people seek it in careers.

  449. Speaker: Some people seek it in relationships.

  450. Speaker: Some people seek it in addictions, in pornography and

  451. Speaker: drugs and alcohol.

  452. Speaker: It takes many forms.

  453. Speaker: People devote their hearts to these sinful things because of

  454. Speaker: their debased minds.

  455. Speaker: The corruptness, the sin has polluted them and put darkness

  456. Speaker: into their lives, and they're pulled towards that darkness.

  457. Speaker: And what happens is, is that sin takes away your purpose.

  458. Speaker: Sin damages what you were

  459. Speaker: supposed to be made in the image

  460. Speaker: of God.

  461. Speaker: But here's what's true about God.

  462. Speaker: That I realized down there is

  463. Speaker: that the lie that we all believe

  464. Speaker: is we have to make life for

  465. Speaker: ourselves.

  466. Speaker: We have to create purpose in our life for ourselves.

  467. Speaker: But the truth that God wants you to know this morning is this You

  468. Speaker: already have a purpose.

  469. Speaker: Whom?

  470. Speaker: God foreknew.

  471. Speaker: Who?

  472. Speaker: He set his affection on you and I. Because it says in His word

  473. Speaker: he desires not one to perish.

  474. Speaker: God loves you.

  475. Speaker: John three sixteen is the most quoted verse in the Bible.

  476. Speaker: And what is it about?

  477. Speaker: It's about what the love of God manifests itself to be.

  478. Speaker: For God so loved the world that

  479. Speaker: he sent his one and only son,

  480. Speaker: that whosoever believes in him

  481. Speaker: should not perish, but have

  482. Speaker: what?

  483. Speaker: Everlasting life.

  484. Speaker: Our God loves us so much he foreknew us and set his

  485. Speaker: affection upon us.

  486. Speaker: He wanted to restore the purpose

  487. Speaker: that he'd given us to be his

  488. Speaker: image bearer.

  489. Speaker: So what did God do?

  490. Speaker: He did what we couldn't do.

  491. Speaker: He sent his son to live the life that we could not live.

  492. Speaker: Jesus came to this earth.

  493. Speaker: He lived a perfect life.

  494. Speaker: And when he was.

  495. Speaker: When he was mocked and persecuted by the people of God,

  496. Speaker: by the Pharisees, by the Sadducees, by the scribes when

  497. Speaker: he was challenged.

  498. Speaker: Listen to what this guy says.

  499. Speaker: He came to destroy the law.

  500. Speaker: You know what Jesus said?

  501. Speaker: I didn't come to destroy the law, but to fulfill it.

  502. Speaker: His purpose in coming to this world was to show us, you and I,

  503. Speaker: what our true purpose is, what the true image of God is.

  504. Speaker: When Paul talks about Jesus in Colossians, the first thing he

  505. Speaker: says to the church is Jesus is God in the flesh.

  506. Speaker: He's before all things.

  507. Speaker: He'll be after all things eternally.

  508. Speaker: He is co-equal with God.

  509. Speaker: Father, spirit and son are one,

  510. Speaker: and they've all been shown to us

  511. Speaker: by God.

  512. Speaker: He's shown us these three

  513. Speaker: aspects of his nature so that we

  514. Speaker: know what the true image of God

  515. Speaker: is.

  516. Speaker: God the father created us in our

  517. Speaker: image, gave us the divine

  518. Speaker: mandate.

  519. Speaker: We sinned against God and fell.

  520. Speaker: So what does God do?

  521. Speaker: He says, here's the solution.

  522. Speaker: I'm going to send the son to show everyone what the image of

  523. Speaker: God is really about.

  524. Speaker: Everything about Jesus was being

  525. Speaker: the image of God because he was

  526. Speaker: God.

  527. Speaker: His prayer life, the stewardship over the things that God gave

  528. Speaker: him, the relationships that he had, every single thing in his

  529. Speaker: life was built around bearing the image of God.

  530. Speaker: And he told his disciples constantly, I'm not going to be

  531. Speaker: here for long.

  532. Speaker: There's coming a time where I must go, and I must leave you,

  533. Speaker: but I'll return.

  534. Speaker: And the very last things he said to his disciples during the

  535. Speaker: Passion Week was a series of parables about what to do when

  536. Speaker: that time came.

  537. Speaker: He said, When I'm gone, I'm leaving you to be the image of

  538. Speaker: God, to be remade and reborn by the work of the cross, to be

  539. Speaker: restored to your true purpose, to have the Spirit of God now

  540. Speaker: dwell inside of you.

  541. Speaker: And as you submit to God and

  542. Speaker: trust and obey him, the Spirit's

  543. Speaker: work in your life mold you,

  544. Speaker: informs you.

  545. Speaker: The Master Potter, like a wheel of clay being spun, has his hand

  546. Speaker: in your life, and he's shaping you into what you were always

  547. Speaker: intended to be.

  548. Speaker: God says, whom he foreknew, he predestined in Christ Jesus, we

  549. Speaker: are predestined to this purpose, to be conformed to the image of

  550. Speaker: the son, that he might be the first born among many brethren.

  551. Speaker: You and I are the fruit.

  552. Speaker: He's the firstborn.

  553. Speaker: We're the fruit of that gospel ministry.

  554. Speaker: We're to carry that on and

  555. Speaker: produce more fruit so that as we

  556. Speaker: share the gospel in obedience to

  557. Speaker: the Great Commission, the whole

  558. Speaker: world is changed by the truth of

  559. Speaker: Christ.

  560. Speaker: And God does this incredible work.

  561. Speaker: God does this incredible work of molding us every day more into

  562. Speaker: the image of Jesus.

  563. Speaker: There's not one day in your life that you should wake up, live

  564. Speaker: your life, and go to sleep, that you're not more like Jesus when

  565. Speaker: you go to bed.

  566. Speaker: Press into the heart of God every day.

  567. Speaker: That's how you allow God to mold you into the image of Christ.

  568. Speaker: That's how God can turn suffering into good.

  569. Speaker: Embrace it.

  570. Speaker: Embrace the good and the bad and say, God, I'm sick.

  571. Speaker: God I'm poor.

  572. Speaker: God I'm jobless.

  573. Speaker: God, my relationships are damaged.

  574. Speaker: But I believe, God that you can change me.

  575. Speaker: I believe that you can change the situation.

  576. Speaker: I believe someone who also is sick can be put in my path, and

  577. Speaker: I can share my experience with them and say, you know what?

  578. Speaker: I'm not worried about it.

  579. Speaker: I'm going to endure this.

  580. Speaker: But it's only for a time because I'm pressing towards the goal,

  581. Speaker: the goal of glory.

  582. Speaker: Look at the last part of verse thirty there.

  583. Speaker: There's a process.

  584. Speaker: There's a promise, there's a purpose.

  585. Speaker: God will take everything in your

  586. Speaker: life and not waste it if you

  587. Speaker: trust him.

  588. Speaker: That's the promise, the purpose.

  589. Speaker: God will take you and mold you into the image of Christ so that

  590. Speaker: you reflect him in this world.

  591. Speaker: And there's a process.

  592. Speaker: Look at verse thirty as we close.

  593. Speaker: Moreover whom he predestined to

  594. Speaker: this purpose, he called them,

  595. Speaker: and whom he called he justified,

  596. Speaker: and whom he justified, he

  597. Speaker: glorified.

  598. Speaker: Guess what?

  599. Speaker: If you put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ for salvation,

  600. Speaker: your purpose is restored.

  601. Speaker: God begins to mold you into the image of Christ.

  602. Speaker: He calls you.

  603. Speaker: And if you respond to that call

  604. Speaker: this morning, you're justified

  605. Speaker: before God.

  606. Speaker: When you stand before God, your

  607. Speaker: sins are there, your sins are

  608. Speaker: there.

  609. Speaker: Your name is attached to all

  610. Speaker: those evil things that we do in

  611. Speaker: life.

  612. Speaker: But you know what happens when God sees you?

  613. Speaker: He doesn't see dirty, filthy rags.

  614. Speaker: He sees the righteousness of Christ.

  615. Speaker: Amen.

  616. Speaker: You're clothed in his righteousness.

  617. Speaker: Your sin has been paid for by his blood.

  618. Speaker: You have a restored person purpose.

  619. Speaker: You have salvation.

  620. Speaker: You have redemption because your

  621. Speaker: Lord lived the life you couldn't

  622. Speaker: live.

  623. Speaker: And even though he didn't deserve death, he went and died

  624. Speaker: on a cross for you.

  625. Speaker: He took your place on that cross.

  626. Speaker: For the wages of sin is death.

  627. Speaker: But the gift of God is

  628. Speaker: everlasting life through Christ

  629. Speaker: our Lord.

  630. Speaker: There's a penalty to be paid for our sin.

  631. Speaker: But God loves you so much he paid it for you.

  632. Speaker: And if you believe that, you can have what God is saying here

  633. Speaker: this morning, you can have real purpose in your life.

  634. Speaker: You don't have to fumble through life anymore thinking, what's

  635. Speaker: the purpose of all this?

  636. Speaker: What's the meaning?

  637. Speaker: What am I supposed to be doing?

  638. Speaker: Everything in your life when you

  639. Speaker: have a vertical relationship

  640. Speaker: with God?

  641. Speaker: That's right.

  642. Speaker: Pastor Rodney says that every time he gets up here.

  643. Speaker: So I gotta honor him by saying it to.

  644. Speaker: The most important thing you do in life is what?

  645. Speaker: To get right with God.

  646. Speaker: When that happens, everything in

  647. Speaker: your life becomes right and this

  648. Speaker: purpose is restored and you have

  649. Speaker: a joy, a peace that surpasses

  650. Speaker: all understanding.

  651. Speaker: And it's simply by faith that you ask God to save you.

  652. Speaker: And then his promise is that he justifies you before himself

  653. Speaker: that your sins are forgiven.

  654. Speaker: And here's my favorite part of this.

  655. Speaker: There's a perspective in this process that you have to keep.

  656. Speaker: God says, Whom he foreknew, he

  657. Speaker: also predestined, whom he

  658. Speaker: predestined, he also called,

  659. Speaker: whom he called, he also

  660. Speaker: justified, whom he justified, he

  661. Speaker: also glorified.

  662. Speaker: God is using you and pressing and pushing you towards this

  663. Speaker: goal of glorification.

  664. Speaker: Someday you and I will be gone.

  665. Speaker: The Bible says As this hears the prayer, we should all be praying

  666. Speaker: on that basis.

  667. Speaker: Teach us to number our days.

  668. Speaker: Lord, teach us to number our days.

  669. Speaker: We don't know when our time is up.

  670. Speaker: We don't know when that is, but we know it's coming.

  671. Speaker: It's appointed unto man once to die and then the judgment.

  672. Speaker: Amen.

  673. Speaker: It's coming.

  674. Speaker: And when I stand before God on that day, when I stand before

  675. Speaker: God on that day.

  676. Speaker: If I've trusted in Christ, you

  677. Speaker: know what that day is going to

  678. Speaker: be about.

  679. Speaker: Glorification.

  680. Speaker: That molding, that final form,

  681. Speaker: that image that you become is

  682. Speaker: Christ.

  683. Speaker: And in that day, you stand in eternity forever with your Lord

  684. Speaker: and your Savior.

  685. Speaker: You stand before him and he says to you, welcome.

  686. Speaker: Well done, well done, my good and faithful servant.

  687. Speaker: Enter into the joy of your Lord.

  688. Speaker: That's the promise.

  689. Speaker: And what I love about this when

  690. Speaker: Paul writes this, is that the

  691. Speaker: word glorified here is in the

  692. Speaker: past tense.

  693. Speaker: It's in the past tense.

  694. Speaker: What does that mean?

  695. Speaker: I don't have to worry about future glory.

  696. Speaker: Am I going to receive this glory that God's promised.

  697. Speaker: No, God says this in the past tense because it's already done,

  698. Speaker: and all you have to do is fulfill your purpose.

  699. Speaker: So what the Lord reminded me of in Guatemala is that God does

  700. Speaker: not waste suffering.

  701. Speaker: God does not waste sacrifice.

  702. Speaker: God does not waste obedience.

  703. Speaker: He uses all of it for our divine purpose of being molded into the

  704. Speaker: image of our of His Son.

  705. Speaker: God's purpose for your life is

  706. Speaker: not comfort, success, self

  707. Speaker: indulgence, self-gratification.

  708. Speaker: It's conformity.

  709. Speaker: The question is not whether God has a purpose for your life

  710. Speaker: because he does.

  711. Speaker: The question is.

  712. Speaker: The question is whether you resist that purpose or surrender

  713. Speaker: to it, led by sin.

  714. Speaker: You're going to insist on your own will led by the spirit.

  715. Speaker: We surrender to God's will, and

  716. Speaker: in the surrender, we don't lose

  717. Speaker: our lives.

  718. Speaker: We actually find it.

  719. Speaker: Brothers and sisters, in twenty

  720. Speaker: twenty six, you don't need a new

  721. Speaker: resolution.

  722. Speaker: What we need is deeper conformity to Christ.

  723. Speaker: We have our resolution already.

  724. Speaker: We don't need new ones.

  725. Speaker: We need to live out the one that God's given us.

  726. Speaker: So the invitation for the

  727. Speaker: believer today is simple stop

  728. Speaker: resisting the work of God in

  729. Speaker: your life.

  730. Speaker: Stop resisting the work of God in your life.

  731. Speaker: This is what I was doing.

  732. Speaker: I was resisting it.

  733. Speaker: I was compartmentalizing my life

  734. Speaker: and resisting God's work in my

  735. Speaker: life.

  736. Speaker: Don't resist it, believer church, embrace it.

  737. Speaker: And for the unbeliever, the call

  738. Speaker: today is to have your true

  739. Speaker: purpose restored.

  740. Speaker: But to have it restored, you

  741. Speaker: have to be reconciled to God

  742. Speaker: through Christ Jesus only

  743. Speaker: Christ.

  744. Speaker: Only Christ can do that for you.

  745. Speaker: Only in him can purpose and

  746. Speaker: meaning truly be found and

  747. Speaker: realized.

  748. Speaker: So I invite you to come.

  749. Speaker: So we're going to pray.

  750. Speaker: I'm ready to come.

  751. Speaker: I know it's twelve twelve.

  752. Speaker: Bear with us, though.

  753. Speaker: Look at all the what God's showing you today.

  754. Speaker: In this moment.

  755. Speaker: You have an opportunity.

  756. Speaker: I always, I always say this.

  757. Speaker: You never enter the presence of God and leave.

  758. Speaker: Come on brother, you leave.

  759. Speaker: Never leave.

  760. Speaker: Unchanged or unchallenged.

  761. Speaker: Every time that you press into God, he's going to change you

  762. Speaker: and he's going to challenge you.

  763. Speaker: What you have to ask yourself is, how are you going to respond

  764. Speaker: to that challenge?

  765. Speaker: Are you going to leave here

  766. Speaker: today saying, oh, that was a

  767. Speaker: good message.

  768. Speaker: Matt did an okay job.

  769. Speaker: I like this verse.

  770. Speaker: Or are you really going to press into God in these next few

  771. Speaker: minutes and say, Lord, am I fulfilling the purpose you've

  772. Speaker: given me in Christ?

  773. Speaker: How do I how do I press into you more?

  774. Speaker: How do I be molded more into the image of Jesus?

  775. Speaker: You have an opportunity right now to get right with God.

  776. Speaker: If you're a believer and you're

  777. Speaker: not, and if you're an

  778. Speaker: unbeliever, there's no promise

  779. Speaker: of tomorrow.

  780. Speaker: Your life is but a vapor in the wind.

  781. Speaker: But you know what you have right now.

  782. Speaker: You have this moment.

  783. Speaker: You have this moment to think

  784. Speaker: about all that God's told you

  785. Speaker: today.

  786. Speaker: You have this moment to realize that you are a sinner and that

  787. Speaker: your sin separates you from God.

  788. Speaker: You have this moment to realize that you know what?

  789. Speaker: In spite of that, God loves you so much that he suffered that

  790. Speaker: cross for you, and all you have to do is call on the name of the

  791. Speaker: Lord to profess Christ as Lord, and believe in your heart that

  792. Speaker: God raised him from the dead.

  793. Speaker: And if you do, you shall be saved.

  794. Speaker: You can leave here a changed

  795. Speaker: purpose, a changed person with a

  796. Speaker: changed eternity.

  797. Speaker: You don't have to continue to go

  798. Speaker: through life thinking, why am I

  799. Speaker: here?

  800. Speaker: What is this about?

  801. Speaker: Why am I suffering?

  802. Speaker: What am I doing this for?

  803. Speaker: All of that is gone.

  804. Speaker: The moment you trust Jesus because God changes you and you

  805. Speaker: have that chance right now.

  806. Speaker: Don't start twenty twenty six

  807. Speaker: off the way you ended twenty

  808. Speaker: twenty five.

  809. Speaker: Don't leave this house of the Lord unchanged or unchallenged.

  810. Speaker: Press into the heart of God these next few minutes as we

  811. Speaker: pray for salvation, I invite you to come as we pray for, for, for

  812. Speaker: a restored purpose.

  813. Speaker: As a believer, I invite you to come.

  814. Speaker: Whatever God is doing in your life, let his will be done in

  815. Speaker: these next few minutes.

  816. Speaker: Heavenly father, Lord, we thank you.

  817. Speaker: We thank you, father, that you

  818. Speaker: love us so much that you've

  819. Speaker: given us a purpose in Christ

  820. Speaker: Jesus to be molded into his

  821. Speaker: image.

  822. Speaker: You ordain this from the creation of the world.

  823. Speaker: God, we don't have to find meaning and purpose in life.

  824. Speaker: You gave it to us, but our sin has damaged that image.

  825. Speaker: Our sin has separated us from you and God.

  826. Speaker: You have been working ever since that day to restore our true

  827. Speaker: purpose, to restore meaning, to build us up into what we were

  828. Speaker: supposed to be.

  829. Speaker: Your image in this world.

  830. Speaker: God, are we reflecting your image or are we distorting it?

  831. Speaker: As a believer, I pray that you

  832. Speaker: would stir the heart of every

  833. Speaker: Christian, every Christian in

  834. Speaker: this sanctuary.

  835. Speaker: Every Christian lives his message like stir our hearts.

  836. Speaker: God let us know.

  837. Speaker: Are we truly embracing the purpose you've given us?

  838. Speaker: Are we holding back from you, Lord, or are we pressing into

  839. Speaker: you on a daily basis?

  840. Speaker: Are we going to sleep each night closer to you than we were when

  841. Speaker: we woke up?

  842. Speaker: When people see us and they look at our lives, do they see Jesus

  843. Speaker: or do they see a person that's not following the Lord?

  844. Speaker: God, help us to deal with those things in this moment.

  845. Speaker: And most of all, Lord, I pray

  846. Speaker: that as you promised today is

  847. Speaker: that today would be the day of

  848. Speaker: salvation.

  849. Speaker: God stirred the heart of the unbeliever.

  850. Speaker: If they're in this sanctuary.

  851. Speaker: Lord, I pray that Holy Spirit, you would just inspire them to

  852. Speaker: come, to come forward, to pray for salvation, to enjoy the

  853. Speaker: promise you've made, of being saved and changed by the truth

  854. Speaker: of the gospel.

  855. Speaker: Most of all, God, I thank you

  856. Speaker: for your love, your mercy, your

  857. Speaker: grace.

  858. Speaker: And I pray in the name of Jesus right now that your will will be

  859. Speaker: done in this sanctuary.

  860. Speaker: Not my will, not our will, but thy will be done.

  861. Speaker: Lord.

  862. Speaker: And I pray that you would do all this in the name of our Lord and

  863. Speaker: Savior, Jesus Christ.

  864. Speaker: Amen.

  865. Speaker: As we sing, let's stand.

  866. Speaker: Let's worship together.

  867. Speaker: If you have a need, listen.

  868. Speaker: The restaurant will still be open in a few minutes.

  869. Speaker: That game will be on later.

  870. Speaker: You have time to get all the things you need done today, but

  871. Speaker: you can't get back when you leave this place.

  872. Speaker: The time that God's given you right now.

  873. Speaker: Let's worship together as we close this song.

  874. Speaker: And if there's anything you need to deal with, come.

  875. Speaker: The altars are open.

  876. Speaker: People will pray with you.

  877. Speaker: I'll pray with you.

  878. Speaker: People will surround themselves around you.

  879. Speaker: Don't start this year off

  880. Speaker: without dealing with the things

  881. Speaker: that God's asked you to deal

  882. Speaker: with.

  883. Speaker: Don't leave this place unchanged or unchallenged.

  884. Speaker: Thanks for listening.

  885. Speaker: Be sure to come check us out on

  886. Speaker: our Facebook, YouTube or on our

  887. Speaker: website at Waterville Baptist

  888. Speaker: Church.
