  1. Somehow, I don't imagine him wearing the robes of his office.

  2. Perhaps he had some of his dad's hand-me-down clothes.

  3. Maybe he put some of those on so that he looked more like a shepherd

  4. than the sovereign of the nation of Israel.

  5. But looking into his life a little further,

  6. we realize that he had plenty of garments all of his own

  7. that he might have put on that would have made him seem incognito

  8. as he went about and he saw the things that were going on in his kingdom.

  9. It's obvious that Solomon knew a lot more about life than just how to run a country.

  10. When we read in 1 Kings chapter 4, we see that God gave him great discernment

    1 Kings 4 chapter mention

  11. and breadth of mind, 1 Kings chapter 4 and verse 29.

    1 Kings 4 chapter mention

  12. And with this knowledge that he is given, we see how he employed that

  13. to come to understand all that there was to know.

  14. In fact, the writer of Kings tells us that he writes 3,000 proverbs

  15. and 1,005 songs over the course of his life, 1 Kings chapter 4 and verse 32.

    1 Kings 4 chapter mention

  16. And he also spoke of trees, from the cedar of Lebanon to the hyssop that was on the wall.

  17. And he spoke of animals and birds and creeping things and of fish.

  18. And men came from all nations of the earth in order to hear him,

  19. all the kings of the earth that had heard of his great wisdom,

  20. 1 Kings chapter 4, verse 33 and 34.

    1 Kings 4:33

  21. And so maybe as he slips around into the villages and the land that was under his control,

  22. it was on this occasion that he made an observation.

  23. He said, I passed by the field of the sluggard and by the vineyard of a man lacking sense.

  24. And behold, it was overgrown completely with thistles,

  25. and the ground was covered with nettles, and the stone wall was broken down.

  26. When I saw it, I reflected, I looked, and I received instruction.

  27. A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands in rest.

  28. Behold, your poverty will come like a robber, and your want like an armed man.

  29. We read that in Proverbs chapter 24, verse 30 through 34,

    Proverbs 24:30–34

  30. and in one of the longer observations of Proverbs in the second half of the book.

  31. It doesn't tell us if Solomon knew this man or if he was a complete stranger to him,

  32. if he had any history at all.

  33. We're not aware if this man's home had always been dilapidated

  34. or if this was something that had happened recently.

  35. Yet what we find is that Solomon sees this man as an embarrassment to himself.

  36. He's an embarrassment to his neighbors, no doubt.

  37. He's an embarrassment to Solomon and to the rest of the nation.

  38. So Solomon makes some observations.

  39. When we think about what the Proverbs are,

  40. Proverbs are very simply wise sayings that are brief and graphic and are easy to remember.

  41. When we study a passage like Proverbs chapter 24, verse 30 through 34,

    Proverbs 24:30–34

  42. it is clear that there is a literal conclusion to draw with regard to that.

  43. God has given all of us resources that He holds us responsible for.

  44. We're to be stewards of those things, and that includes all that we have.

  45. That includes our houses, that includes our lands.

  46. We should not allow neglect and misuse and misspending of the resources that God gives.

  47. But what he says here seems to me to have a much more profound and a wider impact than just the literal.

  48. When we see what Solomon is speaking of in Proverbs 24, verse 30 through 34,

    Proverbs 24:30–34

  49. it makes us think of all that God has given to us in our hands.

  50. God has given to each of us relationships in our lives,

  51. and He sees to it or He wants us to make the best use of and to regard those as actively

  52. and to be engaged in those as much as we can.

  53. God is as interested as our time and our talent as He is with our treasure.

  54. God is looking at how we cultivate and develop our abilities and our character

  55. and our relationship with Him.

  56. Whatever we do or don't know about this man in Proverbs 24, verse 30 through 34,

    Proverbs 24:30–34

  57. we can make some deductions.

  58. This man had some responsibilities that he was not meeting.

  59. This man had some resources that he was not taking care of.

  60. This man had some right things to do that he was not exercising.

  61. This man had an accountability that he wasn't taking ownership of.

  62. And apparently it is serious enough that Solomon would categorize it for us as folly,

  63. as foolishness, as one who is lacking in sense.

  64. And if we put that in the context of the entire book of Proverbs,

  65. we find that God does not approve of folly,

  66. and it would be in the category of sin and weakness and mistakes.

  67. What can we take beyond just the application to occupation in our career?

  68. How can we make application to all parts of our life,

  69. these profound words that are found in Proverbs 24, verse 30 through 34?

    Proverbs 24:30–34

  70. In the moments that we have this morning together,

  71. I'd like for us just to make three observations from Proverbs 24, verse 30 through 34,

    Proverbs 24:30–34

  72. as we look at the field of the sluggard and the ground of the man lacking sense.

  73. As we dig more deeply into this, the first thing we see is their condition.

  74. You'll notice that he says that the field was completely overgrown with thistles,

  75. and the ground was covered with nettles, and the stone wall was broken down.

  76. As we think about what this means by its significance,

  77. we see that this is a plot of ground that was capable of producing something.

  78. The fact that there are thistles and that there are nettles

  79. tells us that the ground could produce.

  80. And by looking at the stones that are laying there in their disrepair,

  81. we realize that those stones were capable of forming a wall that does its job.

  82. As we think about the condition of these things,

  83. we realize that they were meant to do something, and they were doing something else.

  84. You know, in our lives, we are all producing something one way or another,

  85. and the Bible makes that point for us repeatedly.

  86. Jesus liked to make this point.

  87. In Matthew chapter 12, verse 33 through 35, He says,

    Matthew 12:33–35

  88. Either make the tree good, and its fruit good,

  89. or make the tree bad, and its fruit bad, for you shall know them by their fruits.

  90. You brood of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak that which is good?

  91. For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

  92. So then make the tree good, and its fruit good,

  93. or make the tree bad, and its fruit bad.

  94. And then Jesus, in His sermon, you remember in Matthew chapter 7 and verse 16,

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  95. He says that men do not gather grapes of thorns or figs of thistles.

  96. Even so, every good tree brings forth good fruit,

  97. and a bad tree brings forth bad fruit.

  98. A good tree cannot bring forth bad fruit, nor does a bad tree produce good fruit.

  99. And every tree that does not produce good fruit, men break down,

  100. and they throw into the fire.

  101. Wherefore, by their fruits you shall know them.

  102. Matthew chapter 7, verse 16 through verse 20.

    Matthew 7:16

  103. Solomon would indicate what Jesus would indicate.

  104. If there are thorns, and if there are nettles in any area of our life,

  105. if the wall is broken down around those things that are ours,

  106. we can't shift that blame to anyone else.

  107. So as we expand our horizons from just the land where we live and the house that's on it,

  108. we ask about its condition.

  109. First of all, for example, what condition is your marriage in?

  110. If you're here today and married, I want you to think about that.

  111. How often do you think back to your dating days or the day that you got married?

  112. Or perhaps you think back to the early days of your marriage?

  113. Those were very exciting times.

  114. And if you're like anybody else, you found, you met that person that you fell in love with,

  115. and you chose them over every other person, every other relationship on this earth,

  116. and you either went to the courthouse, or you went into a church building,

  117. or into some venue somewhere, and you declared your love for all time to that person.

  118. And as you think about those early days and those moments,

  119. do you remember how you interacted with one another?

  120. Think about the words that you said to the one that you were trying to win.

  121. You said words that would attract them to you.

  122. You said words that would be words of encouragement.

  123. You did acts of service for them.

  124. You found tangible ways to let them know that you chose them above any other relationship

  125. and any other friendship that you could ever form.

  126. Now, if you weren't good to one another when you were dating in those courting days,

  127. that should have been a red flag for you to have looked at.

  128. But more than likely, there were things that were said and things that were done by you and by them

  129. that was done to maximize their attraction to you.

  130. That's just the way it works all the way back to the beginning of time.

  131. But what happens so often in the process of time?

  132. So often it seems that we stop saying those words to try to build up and encourage one another.

  133. We stop trying to be selfless and put the other person above ourselves

  134. and before we know it, we can find ourselves being roommates

  135. and being business partners rather than soulmates and helpmates.

  136. Just making it to 10 or 20 or 50 years is not an accomplishment

  137. if the relationship has grown with the nettles and the thorns of hurt and betrayal and isolation and resentment.

  138. You know, William Dougherty in his book, Taking Back Your Marriage, says

  139. that we must constantly be building love and marriage rituals.

  140. What rituals do you have to keep the thorns and the nettles and the broken down walls out of your marriage?

  141. Do you set aside time every day in order to talk to one another?

  142. Do you make sexual and emotional intimacy a priority in your married life?

  143. Are you doing those acts that bring you together?

  144. Are you touching base with one another to make sure that you know what's going on?

  145. Are you continuing to serve?

  146. You know, a woman was asked about that she'd been married to her husband for over 60 years.

  147. A woman in Georgia was asked to give her a most precious piece of advice that she could.

  148. And she said in response to that, never be afraid to be the one that loves the most.

  149. As you look into the field of your marriage, what condition is it in?

  150. What condition is your home in?

  151. You know, moms and dads, we should never get to the point that we outgrow

  152. that absolutely sobering thought that when we bring children into this world,

  153. we are partnering with God to bring something eternal into existence.

  154. That when we are at the various stages of bringing our children up,

  155. we must remind ourselves that someday they're going to stand before the great I Am

  156. and they're going to hear Him say,

  157. come, you're blessed of my Father, or depart from me.

  158. And while the Bible makes it clear that everybody is going to stand

  159. and give and account for themselves individually,

  160. 2 Corinthians chapter 5 and verse 10,

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  161. the book of Proverbs makes it clear that the home is a field,

  162. that we must be constantly cultivating and making sure that we are maintaining.

  163. And we do that in multiple ways.

  164. One of the ways in which we cultivate and maintain the field of our home is through the training.

  165. It's measured by the training and the discipline that's done there.

  166. The book of Proverbs has a lot to say about raising our children

  167. and perhaps none stands above Proverbs 22 and verse 6.

  168. And in that particular passage, there are at least three facets involved in this discipline.

  169. First is the facet of discipline.

  170. Train up a child.

  171. This idea of training is that when children come into the world from the very beginning,

  172. we are establishing values and a view of the world.

  173. In this discipline, we are introducing them to the very first authority figures

  174. that they must obey and submit to in this life.

  175. And so we're setting the tone for the future relationships that they're going to engage in.

  176. And so God wants us to make sure that we are demonstrating for them

  177. their responsibility, their role to those in authority in their lives.

  178. The second area after discipline is direction.

  179. Train up a child in the way he should go.

  180. Here's what I found about direction.

  181. There are times, these are wonderful golden moments,

  182. when it's easy and effortless

  183. that you tell your child something to do

  184. and remarkably they are ready, they're on board and they're going in the same direction.

  185. But most of the time it doesn't work that way.

  186. Usually there is a test of will and resolve

  187. and there's got to be a consistency that keeps us to the task

  188. because there are days when it is difficult

  189. and yet we must still determine the direction.

  190. Then though there is a durability.

  191. When he is old, he will not depart from it.

  192. We're planting seeds that we can't see the end result of now.

  193. We're helping them along the road

  194. And so because that's the case, there are passages that speak to us and encourage us

  195. that he who spoils, hates his son, spoils him or spoils a child, hates his son

  196. but he who loves him, disciplines him diligently.

  197. Proverbs chapter 13 and verse 24

    Proverbs 13 chapter mention

  198. Discipline your son while there's hope, do not desire his death.

  199. Proverbs chapter 19 and verse 18

    Proverbs 19 chapter mention

  200. And so as we are actively at work in the field,

  201. it's measured by discipline.

  202. But it's also measured by the priorities in the home.

  203. You know, Jesus isn't focusing exclusively on the home environment.

  204. In fact, he's not. He's speaking of our relationship to material things.

  205. When in Matthew 6 and verse 33, he says,

  206. Seek first the kingdom and his righteousness

  207. and all these things will be added unto you.

  208. And yet when we apply that to our home, this is a principle that will ring true.

  209. It's a good gauge of measurement as to whether or not the fields are overgrown

  210. and the walls are broken down.

  211. If your family members were polled as to what was the greatest emphasis in your home,

  212. what would it be?

  213. If it was measured in dollars and cents,

  214. what would the inhabitants of your home say was the thing that was valued the most?

  215. You know, these are things that are measurable.

  216. And we can very easily find ourselves by default focusing, shifting our focus to something else.

  217. And while we're preparing our children to be successful economically, to be successful socially,

  218. we've got to ask ourselves,

  219. what are we doing to make sure that we ensure that our homes are cultivated and turned over

  220. and fertilized in the way that it should be?

  221. What is the condition of your spiritual life?

  222. I discovered something that I appreciate more and more the older I get,

  223. and they call it the forgetting curve.

  224. Did you know there was such a thing?

  225. In you receiving new information, there's a forgetting curve that says

  226. that within a week's time, you forget 90% of the new information that you get.

  227. Howard, isn't that a wonderful thing to know?

  228. That in a week, 90% of what we're saying here today is going to be completely forgotten.

  229. 50% in the first hour.

  230. 75% in the first day.

  231. So psychology today says that there are certain things you can do

  232. in order to try to cut down on that, or to cut into that.

  233. One of the things you can do is to write it down.

  234. If you write it down, you're more apt to remember it.

  235. But you can also, in the things that you receive, try to make connections with them.

  236. And the third and maybe the most important thing is

  237. is that you've got to apply them immediately.

  238. God understands how important remembering is

  239. and how important remembering it is to provoking action in our life.

  240. And so think about how much of what God's Word speaks to our spiritual lives

  241. is about us remembering.

  242. How well do we do if we get out of the habit of daily diving into the Word of God?

  243. What happens to us spiritually when faithful prayer goes by the wayside?

  244. Have you considered why it is that God has mandated for us

  245. what a privilege it is, but He tells us that He wants us to come together

  246. and to remember His suffering and His death week after week?

  247. Or why He says it's so important for us to assemble together

  248. not just occasionally, but faithfully?

  249. Or what about the importance of thinking back to

  250. when and why you obeyed God's Word and became a Christian

  251. and how you felt when those moments happened in your life?

  252. When we look at this man's field, we see the condition that it was in.

  253. We don't know anything else about this man,

  254. but we know that he was responsible for the condition that it was in.

  255. But then second, as we look back into Proverbs 24

  256. and we see these overgrown fields

  257. and we see these broken down walls,

  258. we see the cause.

  259. Please take note of the fact

  260. that there's nothing overtly evil that's done by this man.

  261. It's not said that he's practicing wickedness.

  262. What is said is that he didn't do anything at all.

  263. He folded his hands, a little sleep, a little slumber,

  264. a little folding of the hands in rest.

  265. Now we should take note of the fact

  266. that Solomon here is not telling us

  267. that it's wrong for us to take a break.

  268. He's not encouraging us to become raging workaholics.

  269. But this man took a good thing to a bad extreme

  270. and as the result of that, there is a cause.

  271. There is an effect, if you will, that comes as the result.

  272. Because he has folded his hands,

  273. hands that should have been working at a time

  274. when he should have been building and planting,

  275. there are things that are going to happen.

  276. And he summarizes in the way

  277. that we saw in our Bible reading a moment ago

  278. in Proverbs chapter 6, verse 10 and 11.

    Proverbs 6:10

  279. It's almost verbatim.

  280. And Solomon will say in Ecclesiastes 4 and verse 5

  281. that the fool folds his hand and consumes his flesh.

  282. Solomon is saying that when we're not taking care

  283. to cultivate and to maintain

  284. and to work the soil in our lives

  285. and to keep the home protected,

  286. that what happens is that those hands are lying dormant.

  287. We'll see more about the effect of that

  288. even further in this lesson.

  289. But isn't it interesting that the New Testament

  290. often refers to faithlessness,

  291. inactivity, indifference, and apathy

  292. by saying it's like falling asleep.

  293. In the New Testament, we find several contexts

  294. where this is said,

  295. and a little sleep, a little slumber,

  296. the unfolding of the hands can spell the difference

  297. in how we do spiritually.

  298. First of all, a little sleep, a little slumber

  299. can spell all the difference.

  300. And whether we are walking in darkness

  301. or walking in light.

  302. Paul would say in Romans chapter 13 and verse 11

    Romans 13 chapter mention

  303. that the time has come for us to wake out of sleep

  304. because our salvation is near

  305. the day in which we first believed.

  306. And because of this,

  307. we are not to walk in the darkness

  308. that he describes in verse 13.

  309. He says, not in carousing and drunkenness,

  310. not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality,

  311. not in strife and jealousy,

  312. but put on the Lord Jesus Christ

  313. and make no provision for the flesh.

  314. Paul is saying that it spells the difference

  315. as to whether we're walking in darkness

  316. or we're walking with Christ in the light.

  317. And when we don't tend to our spiritual lives,

  318. we fall asleep and we wake up

  319. on the wrong side of the world.

  320. The apostle Paul also would tell us

  321. that a little sleep, a little slumber

  322. spells the difference between wisdom and foolishness.

  323. Wherefore, he says,

  324. awake you who sleep and arise from the dead

  325. and Christ shall give you life.

  326. And be not unwise, men, but wise,

  327. making the most of the time because the days are evil.

  328. Therefore, do not be foolish,

  329. but understand what the will of the Lord is.

  330. By actively being involved

  331. in our own spiritual nurturing and development,

  332. we make sure that we're classified by God in wisdom.

  333. And he says,

  334. it's a matter of making sure

  335. that you're using your time to its fullest

  336. to build and to stay at work

  337. on those things that need your attention.

  338. And alongside of that,

  339. he says a little sleep, a little slumber

  340. can spell all the difference

  341. in whether you are ready or you're not ready.

  342. In 1 Thessalonians chapter five,

  343. verse five through eight,

  344. Paul again tells us not to sleep.

  345. We're not like those who sleep,

  346. but we're of the day,

  347. we're not of the night

  348. because men do those reprehensible things

  349. in the night.

  350. Instead, we put on the armor of God.

  351. We put on the armor of faith and love

  352. and as a helmet, the hope of salvation.

  353. Do you remember,

  354. I guess it was in the tail end of the pandemic,

  355. a story that was really surprising

  356. that occurred down in Surfside, Florida.

  357. It's a Miami suburb.

  358. Remember, it was a 12 story condo

  359. that had been around for several years.

  360. And overnight that condo collapsed

  361. and 98 people lost their lives.

  362. 11 were injured.

  363. And as they always do,

  364. they do an after action report

  365. and they look more deeply into what took place.

  366. And not surprisingly,

  367. as they began to examine

  368. the structural integrity of that condo,

  369. they found that there had been a leak

  370. taking place underground,

  371. involved the pool deck.

  372. And there were still reinforcements underground

  373. and because of the water,

  374. it was corroding,

  375. just slowly,

  376. just a little bit by a little bit.

  377. And they said that it was as the result of this

  378. that even though you couldn't tell

  379. the damage was happening beneath the surface

  380. and it weakened and weakened

  381. and over time,

  382. it got to the point

  383. that this entire building collapsed

  384. and almost 100 people

  385. went out into eternity.

  386. When we consider the fact

  387. that so often,

  388. these damages occur

  389. when we're not even noticing them.

  390. Sometimes things happen suddenly

  391. but so often,

  392. it happens little by little.

  393. By not being vigilant

  394. to take care to those areas of our life

  395. where God holds us responsible,

  396. the erosion takes place.

  397. I don't know if you've gone to a house

  398. that's been unoccupied

  399. and you've had to go in.

  400. Maybe Jeremy,

  401. as you're doing an inspection

  402. that hadn't been inhabited for months,

  403. it makes a difference.

  404. You begin to see signs of that.

  405. There are leaks.

  406. Maybe there's mold.

  407. There are pests.

  408. There's rots.

  409. Negligence leads to decay.

  410. Solomon is walking by

  411. this man's property

  412. and as he looks,

  413. he sees the field

  414. and he observes the wall

  415. and he says,

  416. a little sleep,

  417. a little slumber,

  418. a little folding of the hands.

  419. He's addressing times

  420. when hands that are rested

  421. need to be at work

  422. and so we ask ourselves,

  423. are there areas in our lives

  424. where we folded our hands

  425. where we should be busy?

  426. But then third,

  427. as we look into this text

  428. in Proverbs 24,

    Proverbs 24:30–34

  429. verse 30 through 34,

  430. we see the consequences.

  431. When Solomon speaks of this,

  432. he says,

  433. as I went by,

  434. I reflected,

  435. I looked

  436. and I received instruction

  437. as I saw this.

  438. What I saw was

  439. that this poverty came

  440. like a robber

  441. and the want came

  442. like an armed man.

  443. It seemed sudden

  444. but it had been building

  445. all of this time.

  446. Now,

  447. Solomon's proverb

  448. has a moral here

  449. He's talking about poverty.

  450. He said,

  451. this poverty came on him

  452. like a thief

  453. and like an armed robber

  454. but it wasn't.

  455. The consequences were sudden

  456. but it had been coming

  457. the whole time.

  458. When we look at

  459. the consequences

  460. that come about,

  461. we realize that

  462. there are consequences

  463. that happen in this life.

  464. That want,

  465. that robber

  466. picture is one

  467. that's very graphic.

  468. I don't know

  469. if you've ever had this happen to you.

  470. Have you ever had

  471. a house broken into?

  472. Happened to us twice

  473. when I was growing up

  474. both times in Georgia.

  475. I don't know

  476. what the moral

  477. of that story is.

  478. One was in South Georgia

  479. one was in West Georgia

  480. and it was both

  481. in the night time.

  482. And I remember

  483. I was a kid

  484. and I felt very helpless.

  485. It was an opening

  486. of a sliding glass door

  487. on one occasion

  488. and somebody

  489. with a flashlight

  490. trying to get into a house

  491. that we weren't quite in

  492. but we were camping in

  493. a few days

  494. before we were

  495. going to occupy it.

  496. It's a scary thing.

  497. When you feel like

  498. your safety

  499. your peace

  500. is being violated

  501. somebody who you've

  502. not invited

  503. is coming in

  504. and that's the picture

  505. that Solomon

  506. is painting for us.

  507. By the way

  508. it's happened twice

  509. since we've been married

  510. and both times

  511. I was out of town

  512. and poor Kathy

  513. had to

  514. I was in a different

  515. time zone.

  516. It's a scary feeling

  517. when somebody

  518. is in your house

  519. and doesn't belong there

  520. and Solomon says

  521. there's the picture.

  522. You want to see

  523. what it's like?

  524. It's like an armed man

  525. who comes in suddenly.

  526. You know

  527. I think about

  528. the New Testament

  529. and that's how

  530. the New Testament

  531. describes Jesus is coming.

  532. It's like a thief

  533. in the night

  534. in the twinkling of an eye

  535. but here

  536. the application is

  537. it's something unwanted.

  538. The consequences.

  539. And think about

  540. how we can suffer

  541. those consequences

  542. in this life.

  543. We stop investing

  544. in our marriage

  545. it becomes cold

  546. it becomes lifeless

  547. and it can even lead

  548. to adultery

  549. and divorce

  550. and death

  551. and death

  552. and death

  553. and death

  554. and death

  555. and death

  556. and death

  557. and divorce.

  558. Or we stop working on

  559. putting the Lord first

  560. in our homes

  561. and we make habits

  562. and decisions

  563. that compound

  564. over the years

  565. and then when our children

  566. leave home

  567. they leave the Lord.

  568. Or perhaps we have

  569. a disagreement with

  570. an argument with

  571. if you will

  572. a brother or sister

  573. in Christ

  574. and it doesn't take long

  575. that that grows

  576. beyond just

  577. that one-on-one

  578. situation

  579. the Lord says

  580. take care of it

  581. Matthew 18 15-17

  582. and we find

  583. that it begins

  584. to impact

  585. our spiritual health

  586. and even

  587. our relationship

  588. with the Lord

  589. because it's impossible

  590. for us to be right

  591. with Him

  592. and not be right

  593. with each other.

  594. Or perhaps

  595. we've stopped working

  596. on our spiritual

  597. relationship

  598. with God

  599. and as a result

  600. of that

  601. the Hebrews writer says

  602. we can liken that

  603. to drifting

  604. and we are

  605. neglecting so great

  606. a salvation

  607. Hebrews chapter 2

    Hebrews 2:1–3

  608. verse 1-3

  609. and so

  610. thankfully

  611. as we look at this

  612. there are warning signs

  613. in this life

  614. and God

  615. wants us

  616. through passages like this

  617. to see those

  618. and to take the steps

  619. you think about

  620. what makes good soil

  621. it's not just

  622. good soil by itself

  623. it has to be fed

  624. it has to be watered

  625. it has to be turned over

  626. it has to be fertilized

  627. but you know

  628. there's consequences

  629. that come

  630. ultimately

  631. if we're not

  632. heeding this principle

  633. that Solomon

  634. is mentioning here

  635. of actively

  636. being at work

  637. in our own lives

  638. Peter says

  639. if after they have escaped

  640. the pollution

  641. of the world

  642. through the knowledge

  643. of our Lord and Savior

  644. Jesus Christ

  645. they are again

  646. entangled therein

  647. and overcome

  648. the latter end

  649. is worse with them

  650. than the beginning

  651. for it would have been

  652. better for them

  653. to have never known

  654. the way of righteousness

  655. than having known

  656. it to turn away

  657. from the holy commandment

  658. delivered unto them

  659. but it has happened

  660. to them according

  661. to 2 Peter 2

    2 Peter 2:20–22

  662. verse 20-22

  663. and so

  664. Solomon shows us

  665. there are consequences

  666. now

  667. and eternally

  668. if we're not

  669. actively at work

  670. in nurturing

  671. our own spiritual development

  672. and those

  673. that God has put

  674. into our lives

  675. so what's the point

  676. Neil

  677. is it hopeless

  678. are once fields

  679. overgrown

  680. with nettles

  681. and thistles

  682. is that all

  683. that can be done

  684. can walls

  685. that are broken down

  686. can they be built

  687. back up again

  688. I believe

  689. the very existence

  690. of this

  691. that these verses

  692. are in

  693. the Bible

  694. tell us

  695. that God says

  696. that we can do

  697. something

  698. but this is a warning

  699. for us

  700. it's an encouragement

  701. that we can repair

  702. what's been broken down

  703. we can begin again

  704. anew

  705. full confession

  706. I'm not an

  707. HGTV fan

  708. or I guess

  709. it's Magnolia network

  710. now

  711. but

  712. this is one show

  713. that we watched

  714. on occasion

  715. they were

  716. seem to be

  717. a wholesome couple

  718. and that show

  719. was called

  720. Fixer Upper

  721. with Chip and Joanna Gaines

  722. if there's

  723. stuff I don't know about them

  724. then don't tell me

  725. but

  726. that's what they

  727. are said to be

  728. you know

  729. and she's very talented

  730. and he was a funny guy

  731. and so they take a house

  732. that was in need

  733. of great repair

  734. structural problems

  735. and she would design it

  736. and he would build it

  737. and according to Zillow

  738. houses that were

  739. fixer uppers

  740. exceeded

  741. the market

  742. expected value

  743. by 30 percent

  744. there is

  745. a

  746. there is

  747. a master

  748. of the makeover

  749. Chip and Joanna Gaines

  750. have absolutely

  751. nothing on him

  752. he majors

  753. in taking

  754. those things

  755. that have

  756. fallen into

  757. disrepair

  758. those individuals

  759. who have

  760. fallen into

  761. disrepute

  762. who have

  763. stumbled

  764. and failed

  765. and he is

  766. the master

  767. of their makeover

  768. Paul says

  769. you've not

  770. learned

  771. Christ

  772. if so be

  773. you've learned

  774. the truth

  775. which is

  776. in Christ Jesus

  777. that you

  778. put off

  779. the old man

  780. which is being

  781. corrupted by

  782. the deceitful lust

  783. be renewed

  784. in the spirit

  785. of your mind

  786. and that you

  787. put on the new man

  788. which after God

  789. is created in

  790. righteousness

  791. and true holiness

  792. Ephesians 4

    Ephesians 4:20–24

  793. verse 20

  794. through 24

  795. I think it was

  796. instructional for us

  797. that Solomon

  798. took his little walk

  799. that day

  800. and when he did

  801. he came across

  802. this field

  803. because he shows

  804. that we are

  805. conditioned

  806. not just

  807. that our

  808. occupation

  809. and our

  810. career

  811. can be in

  812. but in

  813. every aspect

  814. of our life

  815. and he wants

  816. us to see

  817. the cause

  818. and that's

  819. when we

  820. fold hands

  821. that need

  822. to be busy

  823. and the

  824. consequences

  825. if we

  826. don't

  827. change that

  828. will be

  829. felt in

  830. this life

  831. and in

  832. the life

  833. and in the midst

  834. of that prayer

  835. he talked about

  836. the heart

  837. of an individual

  838. who sees

  839. the will

  840. of Christ

  841. and wants

  842. to rise

  843. to walk

  844. in newness

  845. of life

  846. maybe that's

  847. where you

  848. find yourself

  849. this morning

  850. ready

  851. to make

  852. that decision

  853. to put your

  854. Lord on

  855. in baptism

  856. believing

  857. that he

  858. is the son

  859. of God

  860. willing to

  861. confess

  862. to you

  863. of such a

  864. nature

  865. that you

  866. need us

  867. to pray

  868. alongside of

  869. you

  870. to take

  871. your concerns

  872. and your

  873. needs

  874. to the throne

  875. of God

  876. and to have

  877. prayers

  878. collectively

  879. on your

  880. behalf

  881. maybe

  882. there's

  883. something

  884. you're

  885. struggling

  886. with

  887. that has

  888. outgrown

  889. your ability

  890. to work

  891. as we stand
