  1. morning e

  2. says now there were in the church at

  3. Antioch prophets and teachers Barnabas

  4. Simeon who was called Niger Lucius of

  5. sirene Manan a lifelong friend of Herod

  6. the tetrarch and Saul while they were

  7. worshiping the Lord and fasting the holy

  8. spirit said set apart for me Barnabas

  9. and Saul for for the work to which I

  10. have called them then after fasting and

  11. praying they laid their hands on them

  12. and sent them off would you pray with me

  13. Father we pray that you would help us to

  14. see what we can't see on our own hear

  15. what we can't hear on our own and Obey

  16. through the power of your spirit where

  17. we can't obey on our own we ask and pray

  18. this in Christ's name

  19. amen well over the last few years

  20. probably the last 5 to 10 years the word

  21. disruption has been a very popular word

  22. um it's been popular because it's

  23. usually looked at in a negative

  24. connotation but now the word disruption

  25. is looked at in a positive connotation

  26. for example many many many years ago if

  27. you wanted to get from New York to

  28. California you had one or two options

  29. walk horse and

  30. buggy those were the only two options

  31. that you had and then the right Brothers

  32. decided that they were going to disrupt

  33. the industry by creating Airlines and or

  34. creating planes which we're all

  35. extremely grateful for cuz I don't know

  36. about you but when I travel across the

  37. country I'm glad I don't have to walk or

  38. take a horse and buggy in the early

  39. 2000s most communication was done

  40. usually via phone and if you had um

  41. Nigerians so my family wanted to talk to

  42. other family back home in Africa then

  43. they had to usually go to a convenience

  44. store buy a prepaid card scratch off the

  45. number and then call at certain times of

  46. the day to make sure they caught

  47. somebody then in the early 2000s young

  48. college student by the name of Mark

  49. Zuckerberg decided he was going to

  50. disrupt the communication industry well

  51. really he's been disrupting every

  52. industry but at that time he was going

  53. to disrupt the communications industry

  54. and say hey have a bright idea I want

  55. people to be able to communicate to one

  56. another anytime no matter where they are

  57. what they're doing so that they can

  58. build deeper relationships and

  59. meaningful connection disruption is

  60. often times looked at a negative sight

  61. but really as we've seen over the last

  62. decade or so it can be a very positive

  63. thing A disruption occurs when we are

  64. going about our normal operating the way

  65. we normally do things business as usual

  66. and then something someone invades the

  67. normal agenda in order for something

  68. greater deeper more sustaining to occur

  69. for the time that I have with you this

  70. morning in our passage in Acts 13 I'm

  71. going to talk about what it means when a

  72. church experiences a Heavenly disruption

  73. when a church experiences A disruption

  74. when a There's A disruption in the

  75. status quo and the way we always do

  76. things in the way we normally go about

  77. Sunday morning worship private prayer

  78. time private reading of the word what

  79. happens when the Holy Spirit decides hey

  80. I want to change some things I want to

  81. move some

  82. things when that occurs when there is a

  83. Revival when there is a movement of

  84. God's spirit it always typically results

  85. in one or two things a deeper hunger in

  86. God's people but also the starting and

  87. establishing of new churches the big

  88. idea for our time together today is

  89. simply this a true movement of the

  90. Gospel a true Kingdom movement requires

  91. gospel

  92. Proclamation spiritual

  93. desperation and missional

  94. motivation gospel Proclamation spiritual

  95. despiration and mid missional motivation

  96. and in the passage that we see there's

  97. three key things that I think help us in

  98. order to be the kind of church that

  99. welcomes invites and says Lord if you

  100. want to disrupt the way I go about my

  101. normal time with you if you want to

  102. disrupt our service if you want to

  103. disrupt my quiet time in the morning

  104. Lord have your way but there's three

  105. things that have to that have to occur

  106. one there has to be a unified

  107. diversity secondly there has to be a

  108. deep hunger for God and then finally

  109. there has to be a Great Commission

  110. practice the church that we just read

  111. about here in verse one it says now

  112. there were in the church at Antioch

  113. prophets and teachers Barnabas Simeon

  114. who was called Niger Lucius a sirene

  115. Manan a lifelong friend of Herod the

  116. Tetro

  117. and Saul when a church becomes highly

  118. influential and famous and wellknown

  119. it's usually for a couple of reasons one

  120. they usually have a really well-known

  121. Pastor or there's usually a great

  122. worship leader or artist or musician or

  123. maybe even a wonderful choir that

  124. everybody likes to hear or the seating

  125. capacity just keeps growing growing and

  126. growing now there's nothing inherently

  127. wrong with any of those things but

  128. what's interesting to me about the

  129. church at Antioch is that it is one of

  130. the the most well-known and influential

  131. churches in not only in that time but

  132. yet even still today as many people will

  133. still name their church today put the

  134. name Antioch in there in order to

  135. connect their contemporary church to an

  136. ancient past and the reason for their

  137. influence and the reason for their Fame

  138. it wasn't the fact that they had a

  139. really well-known senior pastor although

  140. they had a lot of great leaders it

  141. wasn't the fact that they were a busting

  142. and growing congregation although

  143. chapter 11 of Acts tells us that this

  144. church was growing like crazy it wasn't

  145. because of their seating capacity what

  146. made this church so influential was

  147. their sending

  148. capacity this would be the home Church

  149. the mother church that would start and

  150. send out Paul and Barnabas on their

  151. missionary Journeys when you read the

  152. tail and of Acts and you see Paul going

  153. from one place to another Asia Minor

  154. turkey and you see churches like Ephesus

  155. being planted churches like the church

  156. in Philippi being planted and you see

  157. him traveling all over the then known

  158. world as a gospel Globe troter the

  159. church at Antioch was it sending church

  160. was his mother

  161. church when you get a chance hopefully

  162. you can read acts 11 verses 19 through3

  163. kind of gives the background for what

  164. happened in the Church of Antioch but

  165. there's a few key things that I'll share

  166. with you that I think it's really

  167. important to know about that church

  168. number one it was a church that was

  169. birthed in pain in Acts chapter 7 Steven

    Acts 7 chapter mention

  170. gets stoned and as a result of the

  171. stoning of stepen the church scatters

  172. all throughout and some of those people

  173. who were ended up getting scattered

  174. ended up starting this church here in

  175. Antioch Not only was this a church that

  176. was birthed in pain this was a church

  177. that experienced an abundance of God's

  178. grace in chap 11: 21 it says this the

  179. hand of the Lord was with them in a

  180. great number believed and turned to the

  181. Lord it was a church where people were

  182. regularly coming to know Jesus and

  183. following him it was also a church with

  184. excellent Bible teaching two of its

  185. greatest leaders were Paul and Barnabas

  186. it was a church that was solid

  187. doctrinally that understood the word of

  188. God that loved to teach it so much so

  189. that we're told in Acts 11: 25-26 that

  190. Paul finds Barnabas excuse me Barnabas

  191. finds Paul and they spent a year in the

  192. Church of Antioch teaching them the word

  193. of God but what I love the most about

  194. the church at Antioch was that in

  195. chapter 11 at the tail end of verse 26

  196. we are told that this was a church with

  197. a great

  198. reputation because it is in Antioch

  199. where that famous p page comes in in

  200. chap 11 of Acts verse 26 where it says

  201. and in Antioch the disciples were first

  202. called

  203. Christians so before then they were only

  204. referenced as the way chapter 11 of the

  205. book of Acts but here in this church

  206. people looked at these people who were

  207. following this Messiah who were

  208. following the Risen Lord Jesus they had

  209. no name for them but yet they said they

  210. look like think like act like conduct

  211. themselves like the guy we just

  212. crucified not that long ago and who said

  213. he was risen so much so that in order to

  214. describe and Define them they said we're

  215. going to call them

  216. Christians we're going to identify them

  217. by what they look like by how they act

  218. by how they love one another by how they

  219. care for one another by what they

  220. treasure and what they hold on

  221. to this church was known for having a

  222. great there is no better reputation than

  223. when you don't have a name and somebody

  224. says hey you look and act like the god

  225. that you worship that's what we're going

  226. to call you now I think this is humbly

  227. and convicting for us on one end is

  228. really humbling because it shows you

  229. like as you walk with him many of you

  230. may have had the experience where you

  231. are interacting with somebody and you

  232. didn't open your mouth and tell them

  233. that you love Jesus you didn't say

  234. anything but then there's a sense of

  235. what you're like man are you a

  236. Christian because the way that you're

  237. conduct the way that you're treating me

  238. the way that you're acting there seems

  239. to be an otherworldly attitude and

  240. motivation behind it but it also should

  241. be very convicting for

  242. because friends we live in a day and in

  243. an age where unfortunately the church in

  244. the west is not known for having a good

  245. reputation we're not known for what

  246. we're for we're known for what we're

  247. against we make headlines not for good

  248. reasons we make headlines for really

  249. poor reasons and yet here we see this

  250. church in Antioch being known for all

  251. the right reasons we tend to get

  252. defensive and blame the world we tend to

  253. blame our culture we tend to blame the

  254. devil often all the time for the reasons

  255. why things aren't going well but this

  256. church here living in a time where there

  257. was a lot of hostility towards the

  258. church a lot of vitrio a lot of pain and

  259. a lot of anger towards jesus' people

  260. they were known for who they worshiped

  261. and who they loved in the in the early

  262. church Caesar uh Caesar hadrien he was

  263. trying to figure out man what makes

  264. these people tick they tried everything

  265. that they could to stop them they said

  266. hey we're going to take some of their

  267. leaders like Peter let's crucify him

  268. upside down Peter actually the going to

  269. crucify him right side up Peter said no

  270. no no no no I'm not worthy you can't

  271. crucify me like my Lord throw that bad

  272. boy upside down and crucify me that way

  273. they tried boiling people alive they

  274. tried taking them into the Coliseum and

  275. pulling them from limb to limb Caesar's

  276. trying to figure out how C how come

  277. everything we're doing to stop this

  278. movement is not stopping them so what he

  279. ends up doing he ends up sending a spy

  280. to infiltrate the church and to get back

  281. word on why these people are acting why

  282. we tell infiltrate their Rings go to a

  283. service find out what it is that make

  284. them tick so that we can understand how

  285. to stop them listen to what aristedes

  286. who was the young man who was sented as

  287. a spy listen to what he wrote back to

  288. Caesar he says this they love one

  289. another and he who has giv gives to him

  290. who has not without boasting and when

  291. they see a stranger they take him in

  292. into their own homes and rejoice over

  293. him as a very brother and if there is

  294. any among them that are poor and needy

  295. and if they have no food to spare they

  296. fast for two or three days in order to

  297. supply to the need for their lack of

  298. food such oh King is their manner of

  299. life and verily this is a new people and

  300. there is something Divine in the midst

  301. of them basically what he's saying is

  302. when the church is known for having a

  303. good reputation even the enemies of the

  304. Cross have to say something miraculous

  305. and divine is happening among them the

  306. final Mark of about this church of

  307. Antioch that I think is important for us

  308. to know is that this is a church that

  309. was marked by

  310. generosity and it's a very specific kind

  311. of generosity so at the end of Acts 11

  312. the Church of anarch is growing Paul and

  313. Barnabas are there preaching the word to

  314. them they're growing in number they're

  315. experiencing a lot of encouraging things

  316. and then at the tail end of chapter 11 a

  317. propheus named agabus which is a very

  318. strong propheus name she comes to them

  319. in Jerusalem and she says hey she comes

  320. from Jerusalem she says hey I have a

  321. sense the the Lord has told me there's

  322. going to be a faming and so what the

  323. church in Antioch does they said okay

  324. the Lord has spoken we're going to

  325. gather up the resources we have and

  326. we're going to send them with Paul and

  327. Barnabas to to Judea in order to care

  328. for the need on paper you're like that's

  329. what the church does when it's a crisis

  330. when it's a famine when it's a hurricane

  331. when it's a disaster we show up we send

  332. people we send resources but the part

  333. that's interesting about that is the

  334. Church of Antioch was a primarily

  335. Gentile Church they're sending money and

  336. resources to a primarily Jewish

  337. congregation why is that important well

  338. it wasn't that long ago when the Jewish

  339. Christians didn't even have a category

  340. or a frame of reference for the Gentiles

  341. being a part of the family of God they

  342. and if you would ask a Jewish person

  343. before Peter has this dream in Acts

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  344. chapter 10 and Paul comes to God comes

  345. to him in a dream and says hey don't

  346. call unclean what I've called clean and

  347. basically telling him I'm not just the

  348. god of the Jews I'm the god of the

  349. Gentiles before that they were thinking

  350. the only way that you're entering the

  351. kingdom of God is if you look like us

  352. think like us and worship in the

  353. synagogue just like us God had to have a

  354. Divine disruption in Peter's life and

  355. then lead the church to say oh no no no

  356. this Gospel Movement this message of

  357. Salvation is for all people which what

  358. that communicates to you and I is that

  359. this church in Antioch they were

  360. committed to Unity and they love their

  361. diversity look at verse one again it

  362. says now let me read it

  363. again now there were in the Church of

  364. Antioch prophets and teachers Barnabas

  365. Simon who was called Niger Lucius of

  366. sirene Manan a life long friend of Herod

  367. the tetrarch and

  368. Saul the church in Antioch they fought

  369. for the church's Unity while embracing

  370. the church's diversity if you read those

  371. names again you would think well those

  372. are some Heavy Hitters Paul wrote 13

  373. letters in the New Testament Barnabas

  374. really encouraging uh but when you look

  375. and you actually think about what did

  376. this mean for that church number one you

  377. have Barnabas who back in Acts chapter 4

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  378. were told his original name was Joseph

  379. and then they Apostles renamed him

  380. Barnabas and he gets a name called

  381. Barnabas which means son of

  382. encouragement Barnabas was the guy

  383. everybody wants in their Church he's the

  384. guy that says man I'm for you I believe

  385. in you God's going to do it like God's

  386. not doing anything in your life in this

  387. particular moment you feel like but

  388. Barnabas comes and says man God's got

  389. some incredible things for you he's the

  390. kind of guy that you always want in your

  391. circle he's the kind of guy you want

  392. around when you're having a bad day or a

  393. great day because he's constantly going

  394. to encourage you now what I love about

  395. Barnabas is that he ends up being paired

  396. with Paul if you're in the Church of

  397. Antioch or in church at that time

  398. initially and the Apostle Paul walks

  399. into your church everybody as you're

  400. looking at me right now everybody's

  401. going to start looking sideways

  402. clutching their purse and whispering to

  403. their spouse or their kids saying hey

  404. get as close to the door as possible but

  405. don't make any sudden movements why

  406. because the last time that the people

  407. heard about Paul he was sa of Tarsus he

  408. was persecuting the church the he was

  409. overseeing the stoning and killing of

  410. Steven so if you're coming into that

  411. congregation and you see him you're

  412. thinking to

  413. yourself you know I need to check my

  414. life insurance

  415. policy um you may want to pull Pastor

  416. Andy to the side and say hey uh yeah guy

  417. in the back we may want to keep an eye

  418. on him how many HPD officers do we have

  419. here on

  420. Sunday why because you you're thinking

  421. here's a guy who we he was known for

  422. trying to stop the movement by killing

  423. our people

  424. and yet Barnabas goes and finds him and

  425. brings him in because Barnabas

  426. understood that the diversity in the

  427. Kingdom in other words if God can change

  428. and transform a man like Saul into Paul

  429. if he can turn a terrorist into a

  430. teammate it's only because he turns

  431. Sinners into

  432. Saints Barnabas understood like don't

  433. don't get it misunderstood what you're

  434. seeing in Paul's life on the outside is

  435. exactly what God does in each and every

  436. one of us on the

  437. inside so here you have somebody who is

  438. in loved and beloved by the church and

  439. you have somebody who we have a lot of

  440. Suspicion doubt and worry about in the

  441. church and the other part about

  442. barnabas' story I think is encouraging

  443. considering the fact that they're

  444. working

  445. together the church L Barnabas they

  446. named him son of encouragement if you're

  447. him you're probably thinking well um I'm

  448. going to go find Paul but I don't really

  449. want to open up a lot of opportunities

  450. and doors for him

  451. but yet he does the exact opposite twice

  452. this is actually the second time that

  453. Barnabas goes and finds Paul brings him

  454. to the church and allows him to use his

  455. gift to build up the church what am I

  456. trying to say you know that there is a

  457. ridiculous amount of unity in the midst

  458. of diversity when people from different

  459. backgrounds and cultures are not only

  460. worshiping together but they're actually

  461. trying to open up gospel opportunities

  462. and doors for people that they have

  463. access to that others wouldn't there's

  464. no way that the church in Jerusalem

  465. without Barnabas co-signing and vouching

  466. for him would say hey come on come on

  467. come on Pastor Paul teach us the Bible

  468. but Barnabas who they love said he's

  469. with me and if I'm good with you and

  470. he's good with me he has to be good with

  471. all of us the other names here that

  472. should be interesting is Niger bar

  473. Simeon who was called Niger that word

  474. Niger there is Latin for black um so he

  475. was a black African Lucius of sirene

  476. sirene is Northern Africa so here you

  477. have in the church you have a Jew and

  478. you have non-jews you have Gentiles and

  479. you have Jews you have those who are

  480. black Africans you have those with

  481. different spiritual gifts because we're

  482. told in verse one some were prophets

  483. some were teachers you have different

  484. ethnicities you have different

  485. backgrounds and yet they didn't see

  486. their diversity as something to fear

  487. they saw it as something to embrace and

  488. to celebrate because they understood our

  489. diversity is beautiful as long as our

  490. Unity is even stronger what United them

  491. was their common love and their Savior

  492. and as they as they were anchored in

  493. that they embraced not only embraced but

  494. they celebrated the diversity that they

  495. had among

  496. them this is transformational and not

  497. only to say nothing of the fact of the

  498. last man that I overlooked Manan it says

  499. Manan a lifelong friend of Herod the

  500. tetrarch now if you didn't like Paul

  501. you're probably not going to like Manan

  502. either because who is Herod the tarch

  503. Herod AKA Herod anpus also known as the

  504. son of the Herod that we read about

  505. during Christmas time in Matthew Chapter

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  506. 2 who tried to kill baby Jesus in

  507. Matthew 2 so you're thinking oh that's

  508. like you got a group of Elders or

  509. Pastors in the church and one of them

  510. says hey my lifelong friend my BFF my

  511. ride or die is the ruler who's trying to

  512. stop our movement I don't know about you

  513. but he's probably not getting ordained

  514. in our church because I'm thinking hey

  515. is he going to try and like Rome isn't

  516. for

  517. us but yet they have different

  518. backgrounds different cultures different

  519. people working and worshiping together

  520. in order to see a true movement

  521. occur do you see diversity in the church

  522. as Kingdom strength or Kingdom

  523. weakness is your life personally

  524. reflected of this kind of diversity that

  525. we see here in verse one now this is not

  526. a call for every Church to be extremely

  527. diverse but what it is saying is every

  528. church will have a variety of gifts a

  529. variety of backgrounds a variety of

  530. expressions and ways that they grew up a

  531. every church will have by Nature a

  532. variety of relationships even if there

  533. was a mono ethnic church and one guy

  534. says hey my lifelong friend is the guy

  535. who's running Rome I'm thinking to

  536. myself yeah I probably don't want you

  537. anywhere near the finances of the church

  538. but in h for but for them they thought

  539. our unity and what we have together is

  540. stronger than what separates

  541. us Pastor in Rockford Illinois um of a

  542. pastor of a predominately

  543. African-American church K Edward

  544. Copeland says this in the Symphony of

  545. God there is room for every

  546. instrument secondly not only did this

  547. church have a Unity amidst their

  548. diversity but also there was a DE deep

  549. hunger for God look at verse two while

  550. they were worshiping the Lord and

  551. fasting the holy spirit said set apart

  552. for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to

  553. which I've called them the church at

  554. Antioch ostensibly was not content with

  555. doing church as normal just going

  556. through the emotions which is a

  557. Temptation for me I know for sure even

  558. in my own time with the Lord there's a

  559. temptation just reading and praying and

  560. going through the motions they weren't

  561. content with that how do we know they

  562. weren't content with that well we know

  563. they weren't content with that because

  564. when we find them here in verse two we

  565. see that there is a deep hunger for God

  566. verse two tells us that they were

  567. worshiping the Lord and fasting fasting

  568. means that they were giv up legitimate

  569. needs of the Body for a greater need of

  570. the Soul worshiping That Word Worship

  571. there literally means that they were

  572. performing their religious duties so

  573. they were going about their day

  574. preaching the word doing communion

  575. baptizing caring for the Saints using

  576. their gifts and then as they were doing

  577. that and as they were devoting

  578. themselves saying hey I'm going to take

  579. some time off temporarily from Instagram

  580. I'm going to take some time off

  581. temporarily from Facebook I'm going to

  582. take some time off temporarily from

  583. Netflix they said I want a deeper hunger

  584. for the Lord in my soul so I'm going to

  585. put away things that are good but not

  586. great in this season and they said as a

  587. result of that a Divine disruption comes

  588. in heaven invades this

  589. church remember we don't know so there's

  590. so many questions here that we don't

  591. even have time to get to but we don't

  592. know why they were fasting but what we

  593. do know is this is a fairly new church a

  594. growing congregation a new Community of

  595. Faith they're living in an

  596. anti-christian Greco Roman culture that

  597. is very hostile to what they believe and

  598. is trying by force to put an end to it

  599. and

  600. yet with all of that that world that is

  601. being turned upside down they don't

  602. respond in fear they don't get defensive

  603. they get offensive by going to God and

  604. crying out in

  605. prayer this is a miraculous thing we're

  606. not living in that much really that much

  607. different of a Time

  608. we could talk all day about the moral

  609. decay in our culture about the spiritual

  610. Decay excuse me about the political

  611. decay in our culture about the social

  612. decay in our culture but at the root of

  613. it is always a sense like man there's a

  614. spiritual decay in our culture no people

  615. don't want God and yet the church here

  616. they said no we need him we need him so

  617. much that we are going to we even as

  618. we're going about church that there's a

  619. sense and a hunger that we want God to

  620. invade one of the ways you know that

  621. there is a hunger for God amongst a

  622. group of people is when the people are

  623. no longer setting the agenda God is the

  624. one setting the agenda how do I know

  625. this it says

  626. here that they were worshiping the Lord

  627. in fasting and then the spirit

  628. interrupted and said hey set apart for

  629. me Paul and Barnabas so what does that

  630. mean that means that the church leaders

  631. are no longer setting the agenda saying

  632. this is what's going to happen saying

  633. we're going to do this we're going to do

  634. that the spirit says hey I got a can I

  635. speak well one of the beautiful things

  636. when there's a hunger for God the lord

  637. loves to speak the Lord speaks us to us

  638. primarily through his word he speaks

  639. through Us in ways that is very clear

  640. Old Testament and New Testament and yet

  641. what we don't know here is how I mean

  642. there's questions how when the spirit of

  643. God says Hey set apart for me Paul and

  644. Barnabas like how does that work is he

  645. is this like Jesus being baptized where

  646. the father says audibly this is my son

  647. with whom I'm well pleased is this like

  648. what happens later on in Acts chapter 15

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  649. where as a result of the Jerusalem

  650. Council and saying hey we want to

  651. encourage the Saints by sending them a

  652. letter they say in verses 15 in chapter

  653. 15: 20- 29 for it seemed good to the

  654. holy spirit and to us to lay on you no

  655. greater burden than these requirements

  656. that you abstain from what has been

  657. sacrificed to idols and from blood and

  658. that you abstain from sexual immorality

  659. if you keep your souls from these you

  660. will do well farewell they said it

  661. seemed good to us and the Holy Spirit

  662. like how do you know there's so many

  663. like you're I'm reading I've read this

  664. passage a bunch of times I'm like God

  665. what does it feel like what does it

  666. sound like when the spirit starts

  667. speaking where the pastor's voice is

  668. decimated and the spirit's voice is is

  669. Amplified the reality is we don't know

  670. but what we do know is when the spirit

  671. spoke everybody

  672. agreed that when there is a hunger for

  673. the word of God when there's a hunger

  674. for The God Who is resurrected from the

  675. dead who has drawn us together we we we

  676. do the things we're supposed to do we

  677. gather with the Saints we take communion

  678. We Gather in groups we do Outreach we

  679. pray and then all of a sudden there is a

  680. sense in which the spirit says oh I I

  681. like this I I like it when there is a

  682. temporary um pushing away of physical

  683. needs so there can be be a temporary um

  684. amplification of spiritual needs I I

  685. love it when the leaders are sensing we

  686. want to take some time away to draw

  687. nearer and closer to God the spirit said

  688. oh I I'm going to use my bullhorn so

  689. that everyone knows I have something to

  690. say that I have something to say this

  691. should develop within us a deep desire

  692. and a passion for the Lord for him to

  693. speak into our lives for him basically

  694. it should it should bring within us an

  695. opportunity and an attitude to say

  696. Lord I love you you know I do I love

  697. spending time in your word I love

  698. praying I love gathering with the Saints

  699. but Lord I'm also open if you want to do

  700. a miracle today have your way if you

  701. want to call us to something greater

  702. have your way if you want to call us to

  703. things that seem scary like we prayed

  704. about earlier taking a step out of faith

  705. into going to places we never thought we

  706. would go sending people to places we

  707. never thought we would send them a

  708. general sense in which there is just a

  709. almost a earthquake Quake trying to

  710. erupt beneath us because we are hungry

  711. for

  712. you have your

  713. way isn't that what you want in your

  714. life like that's what when when we talk

  715. about being led by the spirit but

  716. everybody wants to be led by the spirit

  717. I do but what we often don't talk about

  718. is creating a hunger for God so that we

  719. can be led by the spirit we want the

  720. benefits but we don't really enjoy the

  721. process I mean if you have a big project

  722. at work this week or you have a big

  723. meeting it's not just the execution of

  724. the project or the execution of the

  725. meeting you're saying Lord in the

  726. process guide me lead me if you're in

  727. the real estate industry and you you're

  728. think man I have this commercial real

  729. estate property that I have to get out I

  730. have to find a buyer you know there's a

  731. difference between straining and

  732. struggling and trying to find everything

  733. you can walking the property there's a

  734. difference between going tooth and nail

  735. trying to find a buyer there's a

  736. difference between that and then when

  737. you sense like Lord I'm just going to

  738. prayer walk this

  739. area I'm going to pray for the right

  740. buyers I'm going to pray for this area

  741. I'm going to pray for this neighborhood

  742. I Lord I sent you leading me to that

  743. house in particular to pray for it now

  744. you say I well does it really involve

  745. all that well you have to ask yourself

  746. are you a spiritual person often times

  747. we forget that by definition being a

  748. Christian means you are you are by

  749. definition a spiritual person which

  750. means your life is engulfed incenter

  751. around not only the person and work of

  752. Jesus but in how he communicates to us

  753. it's a it's a deep you're cultivating a

  754. deep hunger and a deep passion saying

  755. Lord move Lord Speak Lord have your way

  756. Lord open doors that no man can open

  757. Lord close the doors that no man can

  758. open Lord guide and lead us and it

  759. wasn't it wasn't just the fact that the

  760. spirit spoke the spirit spoke very

  761. distinctly he said set apart for me

  762. these two individuals what does that

  763. mean that means that there has to be a

  764. understanding in the church that Lord

  765. what you're doing is greater than what

  766. we're doing it's a beautiful thing when

  767. you're creating plans and this isn't

  768. this doesn't mean don't create plans

  769. don't have a strategy it just means

  770. write it in pencil so that when you

  771. submit it to the Lord and the Lord says

  772. oh that's cute but hey I got an idea

  773. send out that person and that person now

  774. when you are reading that passage you're

  775. like

  776. Lord are you if I'm there I'm thinking

  777. let's pray again which is exactly what

  778. they did in verse three let's pray again

  779. to make sure we heard that one right

  780. Saul like H okay we can but Barnabas we

  781. love Barnabas but then as they got to

  782. know Paul they probably thought man this

  783. dude is the brightest person in the

  784. history of the world I see why God saved

  785. him he has a massive intellect he is

  786. basically has three phds he is defending

  787. the faith and he's willing to sacrifice

  788. and go wherever the Lord sends him

  789. you're kind of thinking Lord keep him

  790. here we get great Bible teaching every

  791. week don't send them out help them stay

  792. but of course they were compelled by the

  793. fact that when this when there is a

  794. hunger for God even the things that lead

  795. to tears and gospel goodbyes everybody

  796. in the church says we got to do it

  797. because God has spoken we got to do it

  798. because God has

  799. spoken a gentleman I listened to

  800. recently he was a very wealthy man came

  801. to Faith later in life and he talked

  802. about how the Lord developed a deep

  803. hunger within him and he said the as a

  804. result of that deep hunger he wanted to

  805. teach his kids about Jesus he wanted

  806. them to have the Deep hunger so much so

  807. that I heard him this week he said man

  808. my son he's a oral he's an eye surgeon

  809. in Oklahoma and he prays for his

  810. patients before he does surgery and I

  811. thought to myself man the kingdom of God

  812. must be breaking out in Oklahoma see we

  813. often think in large grandiose ways but

  814. when there's a hunger for God you're

  815. just going about your the the best word

  816. in that passage is while while they were

  817. worshiping the Lord in fasting which

  818. nobody had on the agenda hey we're going

  819. to worship and fast and sing and pray

  820. today and then at about 2:00 the spirit

  821. of God is going to intervene no they

  822. were just saying this is what we seem

  823. the Lord's calling us to do and we're

  824. just going to keep doing that and then

  825. all of a sudden the Holy Spirit disrupts

  826. their service flow and their agenda and

  827. he calls them to something greater that

  828. word w is a is a great word Romans in

  829. Romans chapter 5 Paul says that while we

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  830. were yet sinner Christ died for what

  831. does that mean that means while you were

  832. far off from God while you were not a

  833. follower of his while you were an enemy

  834. of his he doesn't wait for you to get

  835. right he says I'm going I'm going to

  836. bring a Divine disruption into your life

  837. to draw you closer to me all he's doing

  838. here in the Church of Antioch is

  839. creating a Divine disruption in the

  840. world so that churches can be started

  841. people far from God can be drawn near in

  842. the Kingdom would

  843. Advance there isn't a lot of clarity

  844. here we don't know a lot about what the

  845. specifics are it doesn't tell us hey

  846. here's a fivepoint strategy on what I'm

  847. going to he just says I'm going to call

  848. them to myself to the work that I've

  849. called them

  850. to let me ask you a

  851. question if the Lord was to call you

  852. into something that feels scary

  853. something you feel like you're not

  854. equipped for something you feel like I'm

  855. not even ready for

  856. would you be able to hear

  857. him part of what it I mean inevitably

  858. part of what it means to hear the spirit

  859. speak is that you have to be

  860. listening we do not know the specifics

  861. of how the spirit spoke to them but we

  862. do know that because there was such a

  863. hunger for God when he did speak

  864. everybody in the church said yes and

  865. amen yes and a God is speaking to you

  866. he's speaking to me he's often calling

  867. us from what is comfortable to calling

  868. us to what is uncomfortable he's calling

  869. us from what is safe and he's calling us

  870. to Adventures the Great Adventure of

  871. Faith the attitude that we have to have

  872. is to say Lord your servant is listening

  873. what do you want us to

  874. do now of course this is scary and the

  875. as we get to the final point we see that

  876. not only must there be a unified

  877. diversity not only must there be a deep

  878. hunger for God there must also be a

  879. Great Commission practice as we round

  880. third base and head for home verse three

  881. simply says this then after fasting and

  882. praying they laid their hands on them

  883. and sent them off

  884. we all love the Great Commission I love

  885. the Great Commission Mo often times I

  886. find out that we often have a Great

  887. Commission Theory or a wonderful Great

  888. Commission theology but the church in

  889. anoch had a great commission practice

  890. they said it's not when the spirit spoke

  891. notice the first thing they did they

  892. went back to praying and fasting

  893. probably one if I'm there I'm thinking I

  894. want to make sure this is right right we

  895. I mean we have some incredible Bible

  896. teachers in this church we're not just

  897. giving away people for free amen but

  898. we're probably thinking all right Lord

  899. did I hear you right but then you're

  900. also thinking we got to pray and prepare

  901. them for where God is because they they

  902. have no idea they have no idea what

  903. troubles are facing them Paul has no

  904. idea all the imprisonments he know

  905. there's going to be suffering because of

  906. his call but he doesn't understand the

  907. Shipwreck that's going to occur he

  908. doesn't understand the beatings the

  909. lashes the

  910. loneliness he but they set aside time to

  911. pray for them which just is another way

  912. of saying point two isn't really just

  913. one point isolated it should be a way of

  914. life that a hunger for God it shouldn't

  915. just be something that we do for a

  916. season it should characterize our

  917. everyday lives and when it does we have

  918. a practice of sending people out that

  919. the Great Commission doesn't just become

  920. our favorite verse it becomes our

  921. favorite

  922. practice that they said hey we're going

  923. to bring these brothers up we're going

  924. to lay our hands on them and we're going

  925. to send them

  926. out what I love about this John St says

  927. that this shows the beautiful

  928. relationship between the church and the

  929. spirit some people we love the Holy

  930. Spirit working in our own lives we feel

  931. the spirit guiding us and we want just

  932. that just me Jesus and nothing else but

  933. then that just leads us to hyper

  934. individualism but some people we just we

  935. love the work of the church we think man

  936. the church should be doing everything

  937. but often times that leads us into hyper

  938. institutionalism but John St says you

  939. know what's beautiful here who says we

  940. should set apart Paul and Barnabas the

  941. spirit then who lays their hands on them

  942. to send them out the

  943. church when the church and the spirit

  944. are working in un it it it's a it's

  945. almost like a marriage that you are feel

  946. like you're at a front row watching it

  947. happen the spirit calls puts on the

  948. hearts of the leaders whether it's

  949. through the prophets they were there or

  950. just through however he spoke puts it

  951. heart on the heart of the leaders and

  952. then as he puts it on the heart of the

  953. leaders the church says man we have to

  954. by faith walk forward in bringing these

  955. men up recognizing them sending them out

  956. and trusting that what God has for them

  957. is better than what he has for them here

  958. it's a call to Courageous Faith the word

  959. they're literally sinned it means they

  960. were commissioned they were sent out

  961. they were pushed

  962. out part of the reason why this is so

  963. important is that this is what God

  964. always does and this is what he

  965. continues to do he continues to call his

  966. people to himself so he draws Us in but

  967. he doesn't just draw Us in to draw Us in

  968. he draws Us in to send us out the Church

  969. of Antioch was growing like crazy if you

  970. read chapter 11 they could have been

  971. suff they could have been say we are

  972. sufficient by growing by addition but

  973. they said no when there's a hunger for

  974. God we don't we're not just okay with

  975. growing by addition we want to grow by

  976. multiplication which means we are always

  977. looking for identifying who the spirit

  978. is calling us to raising them up and

  979. sending them out three years ago a

  980. little over three years

  981. ago uh the church that we my wife and I

  982. were attending downtown they did the

  983. same thing they said hey we want to send

  984. you all out they we felt the Lord

  985. calling us to the a community southwest

  986. Houston where we start our church and I

  987. remember distinctly a meeting I had with

  988. one of the leaders and they said hey you

  989. know we're planning on this and they

  990. said you know if you want you can

  991. stay which I know that's what they

  992. really

  993. wanted and I for a moment there I

  994. thought man that's a lot more

  995. comfortable frankly you know couple

  996. million dollar budget I don't have to

  997. worry about anything don't have to start

  998. anything from scratch all the systems

  999. everything is Plug and Play I was like

1000. man this is great I'm fairly comfortable

1001. I you know a little bit of church issues

1002. but every church has that I can sleep

  1003. well at

1004. night uh not a lot of

1005. stress but as they were talking to me I

1006. it was like I remember thinking but I

1007. can't stay if God has called me to

1008. go I can't stay if God has called me to

1009. go remember the church in Antioch they

1010. were first called Christians at Antioch

1011. what is Jesus most known for obviously

1012. for his death and for his resurrection

1013. but also he was Jesus God himself as the

1014. First Missionary we serve a sending God

1015. he sent his son into the world on a

1016. rescue mission to redeem us he sending

1017. his people out through every area that

1018. we live work and play in order to draw

1019. people to him and he keeps Gathering his

1020. people to send them out he and it's so

1021. beautiful because you think man we're

1022. we're actually subtracting but when you

1023. look at the rest of the book of Acts and

1024. the big reason why we're all sitting in

1025. this room today is because this church

1026. said hey we're going to send out

1027. missionaries to the ends of the Earth
