  1. happy birthday

  2. pety well good morning

  3. everybody well it's great to be with all

  4. of you it's um I hope you all have been

  5. doing well um I've been doing pretty

  6. well um feel like been um doing a lot of

  7. eating of

  8. late um we had this was invited to our

  9. Cantonese um uh Chinese New Year's

  10. banquet

  11. and ate a ton there and then uh multiple

  12. uh wedding

  13. Banquets was just a lot you know I mean

  14. eating with friends and your loved ones

  15. joyfully it's just a happy time but you

  16. know when you eat so much and indulging

  17. so much afterwards and you're really

  18. worried and uh man man that that the uh

  19. The Wedding Banquet those uh Lobster

  20. Mountain it's wrong it's you could die

  21. on that so anyway anyway but I'm very

  22. blessed but you know think about

  23. Banquets Banquets is uh celebrations

  24. Grand gathering for

  25. relationships many Banquets bring

  26. together distant loved ones Friends

  27. making the occasion all the more special

  28. Banquets are also time where that

  29. requires um considerable

  30. preparations um the week before that Kon

  31. banquet you know I just kind of walking

  32. around in the gym there and I noticed

  33. that they're all cooking in there so

  34. it's like a week before they are cooking

  35. preparing for that banquet every day the

  36. full day this whole group cooking in

  37. there and I remember I was visiting and

  38. talking to and but they were just

  39. talking about how they said they love

  40. the prep as much as the banquet itself

  41. so you know wow that's

  42. great um hosting

  43. banquet can also be

  44. expensive um banquet takes money the

  45. cost some many uh wedding Banquets you

  46. know

  47. staggering

  48. however out of

  49. love I've seen you know very very

  50. Thrifty

  51. parents just break the

  52. bank you know for their kids'

  53. weddings and uh you know there's a

  54. there's a costly generosity flow out of

  55. love and also you know a part of our

  56. Traditions but then there are very

  57. different kind of

  58. Banquets um Banquets of a very different

  59. nature like political events Banquets

  60. you know that may carry a celebration

  61. aspect as well but a often more about

  62. the power and

  63. influence people

  64. eagerly seek to

  65. associate with the rich and the

  66. powerful and um hoping to climb perhaps

  67. social ladders and many are quite

  68. willing to spend to gain

  69. entry into such inner

  70. circles I don't know how many of you

  71. have you know given and attended that

  72. kind of you know high dollar per play uh

  73. events or Banquets you don't have to

  74. raise your

  75. hands um but uh they said that you know

  76. uh the average ticket for these

  77. political fundraising dinners you know

  78. always starts you know starts from the

  79. thousands of dollars

  80. I read that the ticket for Texas

  81. governors in ail

  82. dinner went as high as

  83. $100,000 per

  84. person and then during the presidential

  85. election fundraising dinner tickets for

  86. a couple can

  87. cost half a million

  88. dollars and then for the actual

  89. presidential in arrial dinner

  90. if you want to go to that it'll cost you

  91. a cool million per

  92. person and if that is not mindboggling

  93. enough consider this in

  94. 20122 the final auction price for the

  95. last power lunch was the legendary

  96. investor Warren

  97. Buffett closes out at an astonishing

  98. this a bidding war you know to have that

  99. that lunch was

  100. Buffet 19

  101. million $19

  102. million makes you wonder what do they

  103. eat there anyway huh and makes you

  104. wonder when the dinner when the lunch is

  105. over was it worth

  106. it well anyway that's not the topic

  107. today but to be at the table with the

  108. special and the powerful and the

  109. important as appar apparently in many

  110. circles can be

  111. Priceless today we will resume our

  112. Matthew sermon series which we paused

  113. last year just before Thanksgiving I

  114. mean actually actually right around

  115. Thanksgiving time and we'll be looking

  116. at Matthew Chapter 14 verse 1- 21 and

    Matthew 14:1–21

  117. we'll look at a tale of two Banquets on

  118. the one hand is the birthday banquet of

  119. King Herod and the other is a wilderness

  120. this banquet by King Jesus and I want to

  121. throw up by this question to just for

  122. starters that if you

  123. receive a birthday party invitation in

  124. the Royal Palace but it's just happened

  125. that day that that event also contradict

  126. conflict with conflict with uh our

  127. English Service uh Wilderness

  128. picnic which one would you go

  129. to which one would you go well anyway

  130. well let's uh would you would you rise

  131. for the reading of scripture we're going

  132. to read Matthew 14 1-21 a little bit of

  133. scripture reading here but I hope you

  134. you'll mind I I'll be reading for us

  135. from the

  136. ESV at that time Herod the

  137. tetr heard about the fame of Jesus and

  138. he said to his servants this is John the

  139. Baptist he has risen from the dead that

  140. is why these miraculous powers are atw

  141. working him for Herod had seized John

  142. and bounded him and put him in prison

  143. for the sake of herodias his brother

  144. Philip's wife because John had been

  145. saying to him it is not lawful for you

  146. to have her and though he wanted to put

  147. him to death he feared the people

  148. because they held him to be a prophet

  149. but when herod's birthday came the

  150. daughter of herodias danced before the

  151. company and pleased Herod so that he

  152. promised with an oath to give her

  153. whatever she might ask prompted by her

  154. mom

  155. she said give me the head of John the

  156. Baptist here on a platter and the King

  157. was sorry because of his oath and his

  158. guests he commanded it to be given he

  159. sent and had John beheaded in the prison

  160. and his head was brought on a platter

  161. and given to the girl and she brought it

  162. to her mother and his disciples came and

  163. took the body and buried it and they

  164. went to to to and told Jesus now when

  165. Jesus Jus heard this he was Drew from

  166. there in a bow to a desolate place by

  167. himself but when the crowds heard it

  168. they follow him on foot by to the from

  169. the towns when he when he went ashore he

  170. saw a great crowd and he had compassion

  171. on them and heal their sick now when it

  172. was evening and the disciples came to

  173. him and said this is a desolate place

  174. and the day is now over and the crowds

  175. wa away send send the crowds away to to

  176. go to The Villages and buy food for

  177. themselves but Jesus said they need not

  178. go away you give them something to eat

  179. they said to him we have only Five

  180. Loaves here and two fish and he said

  181. bring them here to me then he ordered

  182. the crowds to sit down on grass and

  183. taken the Five Loaves and the two fish

  184. and he looked up to heaven and said a

  185. blessing then he broke the Loaves and

  186. gave them to the disciples and the

  187. disciples gave them to the crowds and

  188. they all ate and were satisfied and they

  189. took up 12 basket full of the broken

  190. pieces left over and those who were

  191. wisdom uh were about 5,000 men besides

  192. women and

  193. children the Lord bless the reading of

  194. his word please be

  195. seated so we're going to start with the

  196. first banquet which I I named this the

  197. first section the fear at King herod's

  198. Palace banquet but before going to that

  199. part of scripture a little bit of

  200. historical background here because there

  201. are a whole bunch of King herods in the

  202. in the Bible actually Four to be exact

  203. King Herod the Great which are in which

  204. is the Herod in Matthew 2 the one who

  205. slaughtered the newborn uh because he

  206. wanted to get Jesus Herod the tetr or

  207. Herod anpus is the Herod in our story

  208. today he was the son of Herod the gy and

  209. his title tetr means the ruler of a

  210. quarter of the Kingdom because his

  211. father when his father died he divided

  212. the kingdom into four quarters and he

  213. that Herod Tetra had one quarter of that

  214. and so he is the one that's uh that's in

  215. our story Herod agria the first was the

  216. Herod that who imprisoned Peter and

  217. executed James he was also the one that

  218. died was eaten by worms in Acts 12 if

  219. you know the story and then finally a

  220. grip of the second her a grip of the

  221. second was the one who presided over the

  222. Pauline while in Acts chapter 25 and so

    Acts 25 chapter mention

  223. that's the four herods but coming back

  224. to the Herod in our story Herod anpus um

  225. he had

  226. a he had an affair with his brother's

  227. wife uh herodias while his brother was

  228. uh in Rome for business and then after

  229. that herodias uh divorced uh his half

  230. brother and Herod Antipas divorced his

  231. wife so the two of them got married and

  232. it is out of that it is against that

  233. that John the Baptist spoke against and

  234. he spoke when as John the bast spoke

  235. this unwelcome truth boldly to the

  236. power he was

  237. imprisoned and when the scripture told

  238. us that King Herod actually wanted to

  239. put him to death but for fear of people

  240. because people considered John a prophet

  241. he kept him in

  242. prison and so we saw here the first

  243. thing here is how and then John the AP

  244. in our story would later be

  245. beheaded um in the story becoming really

  246. the the first recorded martyr in the New

  247. Testament one of the marks of

  248. discipleship that we talk about in our

  249. church we've been looking at the mark of

  250. being beloved in the last three month

  251. but this for this quarter we

  252. particularly want to emphasize is the

  253. mark of discipleship

  254. being the truth Bearer and we said that

  255. to receive obey and honor God's word

  256. daily as our way of life is the

  257. description of this quality that we want

  258. to

  259. cultivate in all of our people's

  260. lives and um and when to when we said

  261. that to receive obey and honor God's

  262. word it means that God's word cannot not

  263. just be a knowledge fact in here or even

  264. buried down in here but that it need to

  265. be lived out and that we are to also to

  266. speak up and share God's word and

  267. testify to the power of His truth and

  268. sometimes that action can meet with

  269. strong

  270. resistance in Philippians 1: 27-29 we

  271. read the Apostle Paul talks about when

  272. he called on the Philippians let that

  273. your manner of Life be worthy of the

  274. gospel of Christ and he talks about how

  275. how that that that that together they're

  276. striving side by side for this gospel

  277. and he said tell them to not be

  278. frightened in anything by your oance and

  279. then he closes that verse out by by

  280. saying in verse 29 he said that for it

  281. has been granted to you that for the

  282. sake of Christ that you you should not

  283. only believe in him but

  284. also suffer for

  285. him it's not an easy thing to uh receive

  286. here but it says that to suffer for

  287. Christ is actually something that's

  288. granted a privilege and

  289. honor and so in in fact I think some of

  290. us when you hear this you may May

  291. hesitate say you know do I really want

  292. that can I really do

  293. that but the truth of fact

  294. is we do take up this kind of

  295. willingness to

  296. suffer in many phases of

  297. life when you commit to marry someone

  298. and when you take the wedding vow when

  299. you take that vow it talks about in good

  300. time and bad time in sickness and in

  301. health you are vowing to do what you are

  302. vowing to love and suffer for the one

  303. you love you are vwing that you be

  304. willing to take up that place to suffer

  305. with your

  306. beloved for those of us who are parents

  307. here from the moment that your child

  308. conceived you have started a commitment

  309. to a

  310. journey of

  311. suffering to suffer willingly to give

  312. willingly

  313. yourself as your child grow as your own

  314. life ABS away you are giving yourself to

  315. the act of love and so if the Gospel of

  316. Jesus Christ is about the love of God

  317. for us then it go it goes naturally it

  318. is also is a call to love and a call and

  319. a willingness to suffer it is granted to

  320. us to

  321. suffer most recently there's been a

  322. number of requests from the mission

  323. field yeah hold off on that from

  324. missions field concerning this kind of

  325. suffering our Global Partners Jerry and

  326. kitling um who we've been praying for

  327. they have just been kicked off kicked

  328. out uh uh their country and they've been

  329. uh given the walk-in paper that and

  330. they've been just under tremendous

  331. stress and asking for prayer if you will

  332. pray for them I think they may have to

  333. leave their country that they've been

  334. serving for all these past years uh

  335. within the next week or so our Global

  336. partner stepen friend in North Africa

  337. has been asking for our prayers for a

  338. local Believer by the name of Jason I

  339. don't believe is his real name who's

  340. been imprison for his faith and his

  341. trial and the cour the coure uh uh the

  342. the decision on his and the charge

  343. against him because of a faith uh has

  344. been postponed again and again but now

  345. it's now set for this coming

  346. Tuesday when you pray would you remember

  347. to pray for Jason that he will not be

  348. afraid that God will give him Grace and

  349. give his family Grace

  350. you know something because the truth of

  351. fact is Believers around the world are

  352. suffering for the sake of Jesus as part

  353. of their everyday

  354. life Stephen sent me this link to this

  355. film

  356. www.th 21 film.com

  357. because February 15 which is yesterday

  358. marks the 10th anniversary of the

  359. martyrdom of the 21 Christians who were

  360. executed unfilm by Seashore if some of

  361. you may remember that story by ISIS if

  362. you remember

  363. that Isis filmed that beheading to try

  364. to terrorize Believers but actually rais

  365. the anger all over the

  366. world these believer these copy

  367. Believers were not missionaries they

  368. were everyday

  369. Believers and they were given the chance

  370. if they recant their faith if they

  371. disown Jesus they'll be able to go free

  372. but for some one reason or the other all

  373. of them all of them

  374. resist all of them resist to from dis

  375. owning

  376. Jesus before their

  377. captures to recognize these 21 Martyrs a

  378. team of 70 plus artists from over 20

  379. countries built made this short film to

  380. remember their lives I just want to

  381. point out it is a combination of

  382. animation and Real documentary uh it is

  383. not a film I think suitable for

  384. children but I would say it is a very

  385. powerful film short film that describe

  386. how help us get a glimpse at how men and

  387. women around the world are taking a

  388. stand for their faith and willing to lay

  389. down their

  390. lives the Apostle Paul talks about

  391. enduring persecution and suffering in 2

  392. Timothy 3 when he says that he said that

  393. his suffering that second persecution he

  394. endure he said all who desire to live a

  395. Godly life in Christ Jesus will be

  396. persecuted all who desire to live a

  397. Godly life will

  398. be

  399. persecuted and it speaks of the fact of

  400. how the kind of heart that we need to

  401. have living in the time we

  402. do the Apostle Peter talks about the

  403. speaks of the saying in 1 Peter 3 he

  404. says that but even if you should suffer

  405. for righteousness sake you will be

  406. blessed have no fear of them nor be

  407. troubled and so John the

  408. Baptist who was sent by God as a

  409. forerunner for Jesus the Messiah he also

  410. lays down his life to foreshadow Jesus

  411. own death and

  412. suffering but as we go back to the

  413. narrative we notice that even the

  414. seemingly powerful had the fears of

  415. their own in Matthew

    Matthew 14:5

  416. 14:5 King Herod said he wanted to put

  417. him to John to death but he feared the

  418. people in 149 the King was sorry because

  419. of his oath and the

  420. guests King Herod

  421. feared a public

  422. Uprising as people saw John as prophet

  423. he also could not afford to be seen Weak

  424. by his officials as a king who did not

  425. keep his

  426. word so he made up his mind quickly as a

  427. strong leader does not only to execute

  428. John the Baptist but also to

  429. fulfill the girl's request exactly as

  430. she wanted

  431. delivering John the Baptist's head on a

  432. platter to

  433. her seizing the opportunity he used the

  434. execution as a public warning

  435. serving an example to intimidate all

  436. others who may come in the footsteps of

  437. John anyone who would dare would you

  438. think anyone would dare to challenge or

  439. criticize the king from now

  440. on yeah you can imagine how a birthday a

  441. Rowdy Royal birthday party has gotten

  442. ruined

  443. suddenly the party had turned into a

  444. deeply troubling horrifying stomach

  445. churning spectacle

  446. ending in

  447. unsettling and joyless

  448. dispersal

  449. politics is a ruthless battle for

  450. power we should see here that in

  451. Matthew's stories there's a continual

  452. background plot which is two

  453. Kingdom In conflict two

  454. kings in Conflict King Herod and the

  455. kingdom of God

  456. engaged in severe Mortal

  457. Combat and understand that this is why

  458. Psalm 2 have for told this conflict why

  459. do the Nations rage and the people plot

  460. in vain the kings of the earth set

  461. themselves and the rulers take counil

  462. together against the Lord and against

  463. his

  464. anointed made no mistake about it that's

  465. all the kings of the

  466. world and so understand why we are not

  467. to put our trust in any political figure

  468. or party even if the political leaders

  469. try to connect their action to

  470. supposedly Faith

  471. motive when church and

  472. Believers become tied up with any

  473. political party the

  474. gospel

  475. inevitably

  476. suffers and so we want to show we want

  477. to bring a gracious attitude on behalf

  478. half of the kingdom of God whom we

  479. represent you can't represent two

  480. kingdoms and so when we see people who

  481. gets very all all all worked up or

  482. overly emotional we want to be gracious

  483. and reminding people that why is it that

  484. we follow one

  485. king and we follow the kingdom in the

  486. kingdom of

  487. God do not put your trust in princes

  488. says Psalm 146 in human human beings who

  489. cannot save when their Spirits depart

  490. they return to the ground on the very

  491. day their plans come to

  492. nothing when House Church Pastor Wang e

  493. of the early Reign church was imprisoned

  494. in 2019 for his ministry he wrote an

  495. open letter to declare why he chose the

  496. path of faithful

  497. Disobedience it's very much worth

  498. reading if you're interested looking

  499. Pastor Wang e and his open letter I want

  500. to read a short bit for for you Pastor

  501. Wang is still serving his nyear

  502. sentences right

  503. now for on Earth there has only ever

  504. been a Thousand-Year Church there has

  505. never been a Thousand-Year government

  506. there's only Eternal Faith there's no

  507. permanent Authority those who lock me up

  508. will one day be locked up by Angels

  509. those who interrogate me interrogate me

  510. will finally be questioned and judged by

  511. Christ when I think of this the Lord

  512. fills me with a natural compassion and

  513. grief toward those who are attempting to

  514. and actively imprisoning me pray that

  515. the Lord will use me that he will grant

  516. me patience and wisdom that I may take

  517. the gospel to

  518. them separate me from my wife and

  519. children ruin my reputation destroy my

  520. life and family the Earthly authorities

  521. are capable of doing all these things

  522. however no one in this world can force

  523. me to renounce my faith no one can make

  524. me change my life no one can raise me

  525. from the

  526. dead Jesus is the Christ son of the

  527. living Eternal God he died for Sinners

  528. and rose again to to life for us he is

  529. my king and the king of the whole earth

  530. yesterday today and forever I am his

  531. servant I am in in prison because of

  532. this I will resist in meekness those who

  533. resist

  534. God we need to remember the suffering

  535. church we need to remember the suffering

  536. Believers I want to encourage uh our our

  537. congregation our Global Ministry prayer

  538. meeting we we really do have do have

  539. have't been seeing a lot of uh English

  540. congregation people uh I want to

  541. encourage you we need to pray please

  542. remember the suffering people of God all

  543. over the world

  544. and pray at the same time for our own

  545. courage and Grace to suffer for Christ

  546. when our time comes and we come to the

  547. next part I'm running really late on

  548. this it's the fellowship at King Jesus

  549. uh Wilderness banquet and there's a very

  550. different kind of banquet immedately

  551. followed this because when when Jesus

  552. went ashore and they saw the great crowd

  553. and and people came to and he says Jesus

  554. had compassion on them and so I'm not

  555. going to jump into a great deal upon

  556. this passage because next week we're

  557. still going to go into this passage in

  558. more detail but here I'm just a contrast

  559. here and so the disciples right away

  560. suggested that you know send them to um

  561. send the people to offend for themselves

  562. and get food but Jesus said no Jesus had

  563. compassion on

  564. them and uh and so what we have in the

  565. in the story in Matthew 14 uh 1721 we

  566. have Jesus taking Five Loaves and two

  567. fish and and if you remember the the the

  568. the the gesture he said Jesus look into

  569. heaven and he broke bread and what does

  570. this remind mind you

  571. of because what Jesus was doing there

  572. was a foreshadowing of

  573. the Lord's

  574. Supper because what is really ultimately

  575. is going to be feeding all the

  576. people is the is is going to be the

  577. offering of Jesus himself he will become

  578. our bread of

  579. life and and and and the Wilderness

  580. setting is not an accident because

  581. that's it is in our each of our own

  582. Wilderness where we all met the

  583. compassion of

  584. Jesus if you look back into your own

  585. life how did you experience The

  586. Compassion of Jesus which changed the

  587. course of your life and made you a child

  588. of God that is our

  589. story and so in the wilderness Jesus and

  590. not only in this this also goes right

  591. back into the Exodus experience when the

  592. when the Lord led the Jewish people

  593. through the through the Wilderness in

  594. into the promised land even as he's

  595. doing so for us

  596. today and not to be missed

  597. out is the high price of this

  598. banquet more

  599. costly more costly than Harris's

  600. Birthday

  601. Bash more

  602. costly than the power lunch was warm

  603. buffet for it is at the price

  604. cause of the son of God's life that that

  605. we all may be welcomed

  606. into banquet was the Lord and so we got

  607. two kings two Banquets two requests two

  608. surprises two sacrifices and two

  609. outcomes in these two Banquets here and

  610. and and and it draws the cont and the

  611. story L is it's drawing the powerful

  612. contrast here because one banquet is all

  613. about power and the other one is about

  614. love and so and so what we're seeing

  615. here is is what God is now calling us as

  616. we go to the last part of this

  617. message is about the banquet that is

  618. still to

  619. come the fullness of the Glorious

  620. banquet of the

  621. lamb and I was just jumping uh jumping

  622. ahead a little bit that uh um you see in

  623. ancient time when a covenant is being

  624. formed the ratifying of a covenant

  625. always calls for a covenant

  626. meal it is in this coveted meal where

  627. the two sides sit down and dine together

  628. signifying the fellowship that they have

  629. they now share because of the covenantal

  630. agreement you can look back to Exodus 24

  631. and Mount Si where there's an example of

  632. that and in the New Testament time the

  633. the Lord's Supper is our covenant meal

  634. every time we take it we're reminded of

  635. how at the highest cost that we now can

  636. be made peace with God and men and with

  637. our

  638. neighbors how we become the people of

  639. God and so in Luke

  640. 14 when one of the I believe a scribe

  641. said to Jesus that blessed is he the one

  642. who eats at the Feast of the kingdom of

  643. God the the The Feast at the kingdom of

  644. God is something all the Jewish people

  645. looking forward to they understood that

  646. you see the human

  647. heart crave for True genuine

  648. acceptance free from Fear And

  649. pretentions there's a deep longing

  650. inside of every

  651. person that we long to me was our

  652. maker and enter into the Glorious G

  653. gracious welcome enter into fellowship

  654. with him without fear in eternity and

  655. that is the background and what behind

  656. this eternal banquet that we're all

  657. looking forward

  658. to and you

  659. know um if you saw if you probably been

  660. our church you've seen the painting that

  661. we call the next supper in our lobby

  662. that was commissioned back in 2017 for

  663. our missions

  664. conference and um

  665. inspired by another work by artist ha Mo

  666. the painting serve as a visual portrayal

  667. of our miss our heart for Missions to

  668. reach out locally and globally as we

  669. work together to welcome all people all

  670. solders from our neighbors our loved

  671. ones to families to to far away tribes

  672. for them for everyone to take their

  673. place at the joyous supper table of the

  674. Lord when that work was Commissioned I

  675. took some

  676. photos of the painting in

  677. progress so you the top left there was

  678. the original pencil sketch of that work

  679. and then I took some pictures when the

  680. picture was uh painting was midway

  681. finished and that got me thinking how

  682. this how the the work in

  683. progress that is us

  684. the next

  685. supper in preparation and in progress

  686. and this is the time we're living

  687. in you know that that in the next supper

  688. picture there are two are standing up

  689. there representing kind of the

  690. Asian-American both OBC and ABC in that

  691. in that standing signifying our posture

  692. as one who served at that

  693. table but the truth is we are in a

  694. Continuum

  695. of profits

  696. Apostles Saints throughout histories

  697. Martyrs who gave their

  698. lives as we

  699. continue their

  700. mission to extend this gracious

  701. invitation to All

  702. Nations to bring this invitation to

  703. people in every walks of life to welcome

  704. Souljers home on behalf of the

  705. king and so every time when we are

  706. given a benediction here and you're

  707. being sent out we're being sent out once

  708. more to

  709. continue in the footsteps of those who

  710. went before us sharing the mission with

  711. our brothers and sisters around the

  712. world who are suffering for their

  713. faith and so we

  714. too who have been given this blessed

  715. place at the

  716. table have been given given this

  717. tremendous joy to extend the

  718. welcome for all to come to the table of

  719. the Lord would you join me in prayer

  720. together thank you Lord for your love

  721. for

  722. us thank you Lord that we who are not

  723. worthy at all have been given a

  724. place at your

  725. table thank you for paying the highest

  726. cause to save us and make us your own

  727. Lord we pray that today that your spirit

  728. will speak to each and every one of

  729. us or what is the banquet that our

  730. hearts are longing

  731. for help us Lord that our hearts are

  732. long and for the Eternal

  733. banquet of the

  734. lamb and give us

  735. Grace to join with men and women

  736. in history and around the world to

  737. welcome Souljers home to the joy of

  738. following Jesus

  739. Together We Love You

  740. Lord in your name we pray amen
