  1. good morning

  2. everyone okay uh if you could all stand

  3. with me and open your Bibles to Matthew

    Matthew 14:1–21

  4. 14 verses 1- 21 if that sounds familiar

  5. uh to you it's the exact same thing we

  6. looked at last week I'll explain why in

  7. a moment but Matthew 14: 1- 21 okay

  8. listen to God's word at that time Herod

  9. the tetrarch heard about the fame of

  10. Jesus and he said to his servants this

  11. is John the Baptist he has been raised

  12. from the dead that is why these

  13. miraculous powers are at work in him for

  14. Herod had seized John and bound him and

  15. put him in prison for the sake of

  16. herodias his brother Philip's wife

  17. because John had been saying to him it

  18. is not lawful for you to have her

  19. and though he wanted to put him to death

  20. he feared the people because they held

  21. him to be a

  22. prophet but when herod's birthday came

  23. the daughter of

  24. herodias the daughter of herodias danced

  25. before the company and pleased Herod so

  26. that he promised with an oath to give

  27. her whatever she might ask prompted by

  28. her mother she said give me the head of

  29. John the Baptist here on a

  30. platter and the King was sorry but

  31. because of his Oaths and his guests he

  32. commanded it to be given he sent and had

  33. John beheaded in the prison and his head

  34. was brought on a platter and given to

  35. the girl and she brought it to her

  36. mother and his disciples came and took

  37. the body and buried it and they went and

  38. told

  39. Jesus now when Jesus heard this he

  40. withdrew from there in a boat to a

  41. desolate place by himself but when the

  42. crowds heard it they followed him on

  43. foot from the towns

  44. when he went ashore he saw a great crowd

  45. and he had compassion on them and healed

  46. their

  47. sick now when it was evening the

  48. disciples came to him and said this is a

  49. desolate place and the day is now over

  50. send the crowds away to go into the

  51. villages and buy food for

  52. themselves but Jesus said they need not

  53. go away you give them something to eat

  54. and they said to him we we have only

  55. Five Loaves here and two fish and he

  56. said bring them here to me then he

  57. ordered the crowds to sit down in the

  58. grass and taking the Five Loaves and the

  59. two fish he looked up to heaven and said

  60. a blessing then he broke the Loaves and

  61. gave them to the disciples and the

  62. disciples gave them to the crowds and

  63. they all ate and were

  64. satisfied and they took up 12 baskets

  65. full of the broken pieces left over and

  66. those who ate were about 5,000 men

  67. besides women and

  68. children the grass withers and the

  69. flower Fades but the word of our God

  70. endures

  71. forever father I pray that your word

  72. today would find uh a spot in our hearts

  73. that we might believe it that you would

  74. give us a mind to understand it and that

  75. we would see uh the challenge of this

  76. word and the promise this word uh gives

  77. to us in our lives we love you God and

  78. pray this in Jesus name

  79. amen please have a

  80. seat well

  81. uh couple things first it's great to be

  82. back up here in the Pulpit it's been a

  83. few months since I've had the

  84. opportunity to preach uh thank you for

  85. pastor Andy and Pastor David and Pastor

  86. Nathan for taking up a lot of the the

  87. slack in that and for our two guest uh

  88. preachers um why are we doing the same

  89. passage all over again well let me just

  90. give you the process by which we put

  91. together

  92. uh these uh our sermon uh series for the

  93. year back in August or SE actually no

  94. this was back in

  95. 20123 we divided the gospel of Matthew

  96. up into uh I think 50 or 60 some odd

  97. sections that we would do over a

  98. two-year period and we just naturally

  99. put uh chapter 14: 1 through 12 and 13-

  100. 21 as two separate sections because they

  101. were two separate

  102. stories when we studi these together as

  103. a staff team a few weeks ago uh we

  104. realized that uh actually you can't

  105. understand these two stories apart from

  106. each other they uh they work together

  107. they are meant to be uh preached

  108. together we were firmly convinced of

  109. that but we couldn't really alter the

  110. schedule so we what are we going to do

  111. because uh we've got uh we've got a

  112. schedule to keep we can't really merge

  113. these two together and so we decided

  114. that there is both uh these two passages

  115. belong together and that they are so

  116. rich that we probably cannot do justice

  117. to them in one sermon and so we just

  118. decided we'd preach two sermons on

  119. Matthew 14 1- 21 so today is part two of

  120. that sermon uh I've entitled this part

  121. uh you know the the Feast of life or the

  122. Feast of death or the banquet of life or

  123. the banquet of death uh because that is

  124. what we have contrasted here as uh last

  125. Matthew 14 presents these two

  126. contrasting Banquets one that leads to

  127. death that's herod's feast and one that

  128. leads to life and that's Jesus's

  129. miraculous feeding uh in the

  130. wilderness Pastor David last week looked

  131. at the contrast between these two

  132. Banquets and focused on the two kings

  133. one King Herod chose to exercise

  134. murderous power to protect himself the

  135. other Jesus

  136. chose compassion foreshadowing his

  137. sacrifice for Sinners on the cross and

  138. we looked and saw Pastor David showed us

  139. how uh Jesus's breaking of the bread uh

  140. and the way he looks up He blesses it he

  141. breaks it it is paralleled perfectly uh

  142. in the inauguration of the Lord's Supper

  143. in Matthew 26 uh verse

  144. 28 this week we are going to go uh we're

  145. going to go deeper and look more at the

  146. nature of these two Banquets and G

  147. detail U what we see here is that there

  148. is a fundamental

  149. antithesis represented in these two uh

  150. in these two feasts an antithesis uh

  151. that goes back all the way uh to the

  152. fall in Genesis 3 if you remember in

  153. Genesis 3 uh you've got Adam and Eve Eve

  154. eats the fruit uh she and Adam are then

  155. uh fall into sin the whole human uh race

  156. is plunged into ruin but God makes a

  157. promise in Genesis

    Genesis 3:15

  158. 3:15 where he says to the

  159. woman or he says to the serpent uh who

  160. is a standing for Satan that there will

  161. be enmity there will be hatred there

  162. will be Warfare between your seed your

  163. Offspring and the seed The Offspring of

  164. the woman you uh he will crush your

  165. head and you will bruise his heel and so

  166. there is this war and that they'll come

  167. a time where there's this final crushing

  168. blow where in the process of crushing

  169. the Serpent's head the seed of the woman

  170. has his heel bruised that there will be

  171. a suffering Conquest over sin and

  172. death and then the whole rest of the Old

  173. Testament really is talking about who is

  174. this Offspring who is this seed and this

  175. Offspring this seed uh we we see that

  176. there's this battle through

  177. time it starts Genesis or in Genesis 4

  178. you've got Cain and

  179. Abel and as you move through the entire

  180. Old Testament you see that there are

  181. those who really follow in the line of

  182. the serpent in the line of Satan and

  183. they are at war with those who have put

  184. their hope and trust in God okay that is

  185. uh the battle that rages throughout the

  186. scripture and here we see it painted in

  187. clear Strokes we have on the one hand

  188. those who worship the creature power

  189. what we can gain in this life and it's

  190. those who attend her herod's banquet and

  191. then we have those who worship the

  192. Creator which would be the disciples and

  193. those who run to Jesus for

  194. feeding so you can either

  195. Feast at the banquet of death the

  196. banquet of Herod the banquet of Satan

  197. the banquet of this world or you Feast

  198. on the banquet of Christ Christ the

  199. banquet of

  200. life and what we see here is that at

  201. this banquet of death that Herod lays

  202. out and we see it is a feast of power of

  203. indulgence and of utter

  204. cruelty to get a seat at that table it

  205. must have been you would have had to

  206. have been a powerful person you would

  207. have had to Curry favor with Herod you

  208. would have done anything to have that

  209. seat at the table to be at that banquet

  210. where all the leading men

  211. of Judea would be sitting and

  212. feasting Herod entertains the

  213. powerful and it is a gruesome gruesome

  214. display it is a perverted display I mean

  215. it is the kind of banquet where a bunch

  216. of grown drunken

  217. men are entertained by herod's do a

  218. stepdaughter and I will let you use your

  219. imagination to see what kind of dance

  220. would inter entertain a group of drunken

  221. men powerful men at a king's

  222. banquet we see King The King who You'

  223. think is the most secure person you

  224. could imagine but even he here is in his

  225. depravity in his

  226. corruption there's an emptiness there's

  227. a lack of security

  228. there the people would have sold their

  229. souls to be at that table and Herod is

  230. is willing to sell his soul to stay in

  231. that position of power why does Herod

  232. agree to kill John the

  233. Baptist because he's made an oath to his

  234. daughter to Pro and she has said this is

  235. what I want he has to keep his oath if

  236. he does not keep his oath he loses trust

  237. and

  238. credibility among the powerful men

  239. ultimately his power depends on keeping

  240. a certain appearance before those at his

  241. table those who also have

  242. power this kingdom is built on the Flesh

  243. and its desires an oppressive corrupt

  244. self-serving and fear driven

  245. rule you I think most of us today would

  246. probably say I would never want to sit

  247. at that

  248. table but I want to submit that uh for

  249. all of us that temptation is

  250. there for the Youth in particular or for

  251. our young adults but I think even for

  252. those of us uh in late young adulthood

  253. or middle age or there's there's this

  254. this thing there's this

  255. temptation that CS Lewis uh he termed it

  256. this desire for to be a part of the

  257. inner

  258. ring and here's what I mean by the inner

  259. ring the inner ring it starts probably

  260. starts when you're about 11 or 12 years

  261. old uh and you start to see that there

  262. are there's this one group of kids uh

  263. they're called the popular kids

  264. or there might be you might not have an

  265. interest in that but there's another

  266. there might be uh the math club or it

  267. might be uh the volleyball team or the

  268. football team or whatever but there is

  269. there is this one group and you feel

  270. like if I could just get into that group

  271. if I could be accepted by

  272. them then I would I know I'm okay I

  273. would be happy I'd feel good about

  274. myself or I'd feel secure about my place

  275. here my

  276. standing and so we do whatever we can to

  277. enter that inner ring whatever that

  278. inner ring is uh it could be that when

  279. you've got you're in in college and

  280. there's this uh this one group where you

  281. know if I if I can get in with that

  282. Professor I know that I've got a

  283. recommendation to whatever grad school I

  284. want to go to or you first get a job and

  285. if okay they're the Power Players if I

  286. can get on the good side with that

  287. manager or this group of people I can go

  288. places in this company and it just goes

  289. on and on and

  290. on even in your own family some of you

  291. with extended families here in Houston

  292. there might be an inner ring you feel

  293. like that's the group of people I need

  294. to be in with this uncle or this

  295. grandfather or whomever there's always a

  296. group of people you feel like I just

  297. need to get into that that group and

  298. somehow this group

  299. knows that they got to put boundaries

  300. between them and the rest of the world

  301. or they lose their special status and

  302. they will make you do things to become a

  303. part of that group when I was when I I

  304. pledged a fraternity when I was in uh

  305. college and they made us do some things

  306. that looking back are are were pretty

  307. unsavory and what they're looking to do

  308. make consciously or

  309. unconsciously is to get you to do things

  310. that your

  311. conscience would tell you not to

  312. do in order to be a part of this inner

  313. ring you have to make compromises you

  314. have to let go of your own values your

  315. own your own sense of what is right and

  316. wrong in order to Curry favor with this

  317. group when you find yourself doing that

  318. you are feasting at herod's banquet the

  319. inner ring really is herod's

  320. banquet CS Lewis when he talked about

  321. that he was talking to a group of uh

  322. seniors who were about to graduate from

  323. from Oxford and he looked at them and he

  324. said you know out of you all of you have

  325. high hopes you have learned about

  326. morality here and ethics but I guarantee

  327. you within 5

  328. years 10

  329. years several of several of you in here

  330. will be what we call

  331. Scoundrels because you will allow

  332. yourself to be corrupted in order to be

  333. a part of the inner

  334. ring and if your desire is to Feast at

  335. the king's banquet at herod's ban

  336. banquet where the powerful are where the

  337. successful

  338. are you will also make those compromises

  339. and you too will find yourself

  340. cheering the kind of corrupt depravity

  341. that was there at herod's

  342. banquet in contrast with that we have

  343. the banquet of

  344. Life verses 13- 21 it starts with The

  345. Compassion of Jesus

  346. and true provision Jesus feeds the

  347. hungry in the

  348. wilderness okay it starts with a false

  349. perception of scarcity King King herod's

  350. banquet has everything Jesus they just

  351. have Five Loaves and two fish it looks

  352. like

  353. nothing but out of faith and trust Jesus

  354. provides more than enough to those who

  355. rely on him the disciples do what Jesus

  356. said says as silly as it might have

  357. seemed you know to take these five

  358. loaves of bread and two fish and break

  359. them and try to pass them out and expect

  360. that to feed 5,000 men plus women and

  361. children that must have seemed

  362. ridiculous we actually tried this once

  363. when I was an inter Varsity staff worker

  364. at the Claremont colleges way back in

  365. the uh mid early 1990s we had our

  366. fellowship uh Sunday nights from 5: to

  367. 6:15 the dining hall closed at 6:30 so

  368. we we were always careful to be done by

  369. uh 6:15 so that people could go and get

  370. their dinner in the dining hall it was a

  371. residential College everyone lived in

  372. the dorms uh one night we had a guest

  373. speaker at our fellowship and he went

  374. long so we finished at uh he finished at

  375. 6 uh 29 we decid we're still going to do

  376. worship we did worship it was 6:40 and

  377. every said all right now what do we

  378. do we can't go eat dinner because the

  379. dining hall is now

  380. closed and one person

  381. uh had brought uh his own dinner four

  382. tacos from uh a a chain store in uh

  383. Southern California called Del Taco and

  384. someone actually prayed over the tacos

  385. and we split them and tried to pass them

  386. around uh the the the congregation and

  387. like six people got to eat and the rest

  388. of us had to go out

  389. afterwards but with Jesus it's

  390. different right it was ridiculous for us

  391. to think that we could replicate that

  392. because we're not Jesus there was real

  393. scarcity Jesus's Kingdom it looks like

  394. there's scarcity but through his power

  395. if you trust in him there will be more

  396. than

  397. enough so we've got the key contrast

  398. here okay which banquet are you feeding

  399. at the world offers power pleasure and

  400. Indulgence but it leads to

  401. death Jesus offers the humblest

  402. provision but we see that it leads to

  403. satisfaction in

  404. life but there's more that's going on

  405. here to be able to see the fullness of

  406. what's happening with these two Banquets

  407. uh we need to see that there are

  408. parallels here to The

  409. Exodus if you look at uh the story of

  410. pharaoh and Moses in Exodus Exodus

  411. starts with the pharaoh who wants to

  412. kill all of the Hebrew HEB Brew boys

  413. under the age of or just as they're born

  414. he orders The Midwives to slaughter

  415. them because he's

  416. afraid he's afraid of losing his power

  417. to the

  418. Hebrews and then God miraculously saves

  419. one child Moses who escapes

  420. pharaoh and then after this Pharaoh is

  421. dead his son now takes power in Egypt

  422. and that's when Moses is called back to

  423. go called to go back to to to Egypt and

  424. there there's confrontation with this

  425. son's King who follows in the footsteps

  426. of his father so you've got this

  427. continuing battle between Pharaoh that's

  428. the anus those who worship the creature

  429. and Moses whom God has saved and he

  430. comes sort of as a foreshadowing of the

  431. seed who will crush the Serpent's

  432. head then after that he is they've

  433. escaped Egypt then they they will cross

  434. a sea

  435. miraculously and the people will be fed

  436. bread in the

  437. wilderness so you've got King who

  438. Slaughters

  439. infants King's son who is in conflict

  440. with Moses after Moses had been saved

  441. from the first

  442. king a crossing of a sea miraculously

  443. and a feeding in the wilderness

  444. well what do we see in Matthew Matthew

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  445. Chapter

  446. 2 Moses I we've got not Moses the King

  447. Herod Slaughters all the children all

  448. the Hebrew boys in the city of Bethlehem

  449. but one escapes only the escap instead

  450. of escaping from Egypt he escapes to

  451. Egypt that King

  452. dies his son Reigns in his

  453. place and now Jesus return returns and

  454. is in conflict with that

  455. King then we see a feeding in the

  456. wilderness in verses 12 through 20 13-

  457. 21 and in the rest of chapter 14 we see

  458. a miraculous walking on the

  459. sea okay the parallels are intentional

  460. they're clear and they're

  461. obvious Herod mares Pharaoh both ru over

  462. God's people and murder the righteous

  463. Jesus is the new and the greater Moses

  464. the greater Moses that Moses prophesied

  465. of in 18:15 uh Deuteronomy 18:15 Moses

    Deuteronomy 18:15

  466. says that God will raise up another

  467. Prophet after me and then at the end of

  468. Deuteronomy which was written long after

  469. Moses's death as kind of an addendum to

  470. Moses's uh book says that after Moses

  471. there never arose another Prophet like

  472. him the people were waiting for this

  473. prophet and he is here in Jesus he is

  474. the new Moses who leads His People Into

  475. the Wilderness of Faith to receive new

  476. provision so if you look at

  477. but what you see here is more than that

  478. what you saw in Exodus is the people

  479. continue to Grumble they've left Egypt

  480. they want to go back to Egypt oh if we

  481. were in Egypt where we could eat leaks

  482. and cucumbers and had uh meat to the

  483. pothole they they wanted to go back into

  484. slavery Exodus 16:3 if we have it up

    Exodus 16:3

  485. here okay and the people of Israel said

  486. to them would that we had died by the

  487. hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt

  488. when we sat by the meat pots and ate

  489. bread to the full for youve brought us

  490. out into this Wilderness to kill this

  491. whole assembly with

  492. Hunger or numbers 114 through6 and the

  493. people and now the rabble there was

  494. among them had a strong craving and the

  495. people of is Israel also wept again and

  496. said oh that we had meat to eat we

  497. remember the fish we ate in Egypt that

  498. cost nothing the Cucumbers the melons

  499. the leaks the onions and the garlic but

  500. now our strength is dried up and there's

  501. nothing at all but this Mana to look at

  502. okay so if we look at

  503. this you can choose the the table of

  504. Jesus you can go to the banquet of life

  505. and you can look and you see five fish

  506. Five Loaves and two

  507. fish and say this is I don't know if

  508. this is

  509. enough maybe that banquet with Herod the

  510. banquet of the

  511. world they got meat there the beer flows

  512. freely there's

  513. entertainment it seems so much more

  514. thrilling and exciting than what we

  515. have and so there's another parallel the

  516. people in Jesus's day if we could see

  517. that up on the board the people in

  518. Jesus's day face the same choices the

  519. people of

  520. Israel trust in herod's world of power

  521. and feasting or trust in Jesus's

  522. Wilderness provision we have the same

  523. Temptation today the temptation to go

  524. back to Egypt back to our lives before

  525. we knew Jesus back to the banquet of

  526. evil and of death

  527. moving on to the third point the death

  528. of John points the powerlessness of the

  529. old Covenant and our need for the

  530. new we didn't do much with John's death

  531. last week what does it represent who is

  532. John the Baptist if you remember back in

  533. chapter 11 Jesus

  534. said there's never been one born of

  535. women greater than John the Baptist

  536. but he was least in the Kingdom of

  537. Heaven is greater than John now Jesus

  538. did not mean that John the Baptist is

  539. not a believer that he's not going to be

  540. saved he's looking at the history of

  541. Salvation and he looks at John as

  542. representing the old order the old

  543. Covenant John was the greatest Under the

  544. old Covenant was Matthew 11:11 that I

    Matthew 11:11

  545. was quoting by the way yet

  546. he comes in

  547. confrontation with the King he comes in

  548. confrontation with the representative of

  549. Satan himself and King

  550. Herod and he is

  551. powerless he dies at the hand of

  552. Herod and all his disciples can do is

  553. carry his body to be bapt carry his head

  554. carry his body all they can do is bury

  555. him

  556. okay Jesus is the true

  557. deliverer Moses led the people out of

  558. Egypt but he could not bring them into

  559. the promised land Jesus is the greater

  560. Moses John prepared the way for the

  561. Messiah but he could not establish the

  562. kingdom only Jesus the new and greater

  563. Moses can accomplish this

  564. work and so we see John's disciples what

  565. do they carry his body they carry the

  566. death and they bury it they're burying

  567. the end of the old order what do Jesus's

  568. disciples carry they carry the blessings

  569. and provision of the Kingdom they bring

  570. life they bring the bread of life if I

  571. can borrow a metaphor from

  572. John so we see this truth even if if

  573. even John the Baptist cannot bring true

  574. salvation the nothing in the old order

  575. the old covenant could do it no ritual

  576. Washings no sacrifices on the altar none

  577. of that could bring about the full and

  578. final forgiveness of

  579. sins no amount of religious obedience

  580. can save us our own works and our own

  581. righteousness are

  582. powerless to bring an end to the kingdom

  583. of Satan only Jesus himself through his

  584. death and Resurrection

  585. Jesus dies he's buried and he rises

  586. again final

  587. point I just want to repeat and

  588. emphasize something I said earlier the

  589. banquet of life looks

  590. unimpressive but it leads to True

  591. salvation the Mana in the wilderness I

  592. mean just even the name they like Mana

  593. in Exodus uh 1615 it tells us what Mana

  594. what they called it Mana uh it's just

  595. when the people of Israel saw it they

  596. said to one another what is it for they

  597. did not know what it was and Moses said

  598. to them it is the bread that the Lord

  599. has given you to eat that word what is

  600. it that's Mana so that's just that's

  601. just what Mana means what is it so

  602. they're they can't even they don't have

  603. a name for it it's just this coriander

  604. seed type thing that they find on the

  605. ground every day it looks

  606. unimpressive the disciples have a

  607. similar response when they look at what

  608. they have Five Loaves and two fish and

  609. they say it is not

  610. enough if we could have that up just I I

  611. want you to see it here clearly we have

  612. only two loaves here and two Five Loaves

  613. here and two fish it is not

  614. enough God's provision never looks

  615. impressive at

  616. first the world's banquet looks glorious

  617. but it leads to

  618. death what does Jesus's provision look

  619. like it looks it comes in the form of a

  620. peasant born in a

  621. manger as an impoverished first

  622. century Galilean

  623. peasant it comes in the form of a man

  624. who is

  625. crucified like a

  626. criminal who is abandoned by his friends

  627. friends whose last cry on the cross is

  628. the Cry of the Damned who says my God my

  629. God why have you forsaken

  630. me this does not look

  631. impressive Five Loaves and two fish do

  632. not look impressive for 5,000 people

  633. when we come in here on the first Sunday

  634. of each month and we have that little

  635. tiny piece of cracker and that little uh

  636. little plastic cup of grape juice

  637. that does not look

  638. impressive when I first became a

  639. Christian the guy who reached out to me

  640. who shared the gospel to me he did not

  641. look impressive you he was a fifth year

  642. senior socially unskill I mean what

  643. fifth year senior lives in the dorms

  644. with a bunch of

  645. freshmen he was socially nervous

  646. socially

  647. awkward he invited me to his Bible study

  648. I only went because I felt sorry for him

  649. I thought I was strong independent

  650. uh in my delusions I thought I was kind

  651. of cool he looked weak and uh just

  652. insignificant and yet he's the one who

  653. had the true life and the true power in

  654. Jesus Christianity will never look cool

  655. we can try to make it look cool we can

  656. uh have bells and whistles there are

  657. churches that their whole point is to

  658. try to make Christianity seem cool and

  659. hip they try to dress as pastors they

  660. try to dress in a hip and cool way they

  661. try to have the hippest and coolest

  662. music that's not where we find

  663. Jesus we find true life not in that

  664. which is

  665. impressive but with but in that which to

  666. the world looks like death you know

  667. yesterday I was driving home from

  668. Oklahoma City it's a long drive and it

  669. was raining there's a horrible car

  670. accident uh what should have been a

  671. 7-hour drive took me about nine and a

  672. half hours and while I'm on the road I'm

  673. just flipping you know stations and I'm

  674. contrasting a Christian music to secular

  675. music and I just struck me

  676. you

  677. musically Christian music is just so bad

  678. okay I mean it's just it's it's just the

  679. the world's music just the production

  680. value is so much better okay the tunes

  681. are so much uh there's there's catch

  682. here okay and the The Poetry of the

  683. lyrics even that's better than a lot of

  684. what Christian artists put together but

  685. where is life going to be held what are

  686. we going to listen to on Sunday morning

  687. where do we it's not in Bruno

  688. Mars

  689. okay that's not where our soul is going

  690. to be

  691. fed our faith looks

  692. unimpressive I think that evangelicals

  693. represent 28% of the American population

  694. maybe a little more than that we

  695. represent we have maybe

  696. uh 12% of attorneys 6% of the doct I

  697. mean just kind of when you look at Elite

  698. culture

  699. you're not going to find it very often

  700. in the Evangelical

  701. Church we are the weak and the

  702. despised but Paul says that's who God

  703. calls I didn't I just thought of this

  704. like 5 seconds ago so we don't have a

  705. PowerPoint slide for it but 1

    1 Corinthians 1:18

  706. Corinthians chapter

  707. 1 verse

  708. 18 for the word of the Cross is folly to

  709. those who are perishing

  710. ing but to us who are being saved it is

  711. the power of God for it is written I'll

  712. destroy the wisdom of the wise and the

  713. discernment of the Discerning I will

  714. thwart where's the one who is wise where

  715. is the Scribe where is the debater of

  716. this age has not God made foolish the

  717. wisdom of the world for since in the

  718. wisdom of God the world did not know God

  719. through wisdom it pleased God through

  720. the Folly of what we preach to save

  721. those who believe and I'm going to skip

  722. down to verse 26 for consider your

  723. calling Brothers not many of you were

  724. wise according to worldly standards not

  725. many were powerful not many were of

  726. noble birth but God chose what is

  727. foolish in the world to shame the wise

  728. God chose what is weak in the world to

  729. shame the strong God chose what is low

  730. and despised in the world even things

  731. that are not not to bring to nothing

  732. things that are so that no human being

  733. might boast in the presence of God and

  734. because of him you are in Christ Jesus

  735. who became to us wisdom from God

  736. righteousness and sanctification and

  737. Redemption so that as it is written let

  738. the one who boasts boast in the

  739. Lord so to summarize for today the world

  740. offers a banquet of indulgence power

  741. control

  742. but it leads to

  743. death Jesus offers a a banquet of

  744. humility faith and provision but it

  745. leads to eternal life and joy and

  746. satisfaction the Israelites long for

  747. Egypt but those who trusted God received

  748. the promised land John's death shows

  749. that the old Covenant can only take us

  750. so far we need a savior in Jesus to

  751. complete this journey for us and so I

  752. have three points of application one

  753. I've asked it again and again what

  754. banquet are you feeding on are you

  755. chasing power success Indulgence or

  756. rejecting the humble and seemingly weak

  757. faith in

  758. Christ two are you trusting God's

  759. provision do you believe that what God

  760. has given you is

  761. enough are you constantly in

  762. discontentment longing for something

  763. else

  764. and three will you follow Jesus Into the

  765. Wilderness into the unimpressive places

  766. away from the huge banquet

  767. table will you follow Jesus Into the

  768. Wilderness and while the Israelites

  769. struggle to be content there will you do

  770. the same or will you embrace the

  771. provision of Christ will you look at the

  772. life God has given you the body God has

  773. given you the job job God has given you

  774. the intellect God has given

  775. you and will you say it's not

  776. enough or you Embrace what Christ has

  777. given you will you embrace the life

  778. group or small group or dgroup that you

  779. are in and the weaknesses of the people

  780. there will you embrace the pastors of a

  781. church that does not hire Rockstar

  782. Megastar million dooll a year pastors

  783. will you Embrace a worship team that

  784. doesn't have full-time paid

  785. musicians will you Embrace this as the

  786. life God has given you and say it is

  787. good and I can be satisfied with this

  788. because the banquet of Jesus is the

  789. banquet of

  790. life let's

  791. pray father God we come to you in

  792. weakness and in trembling

  793. in

  794. imperfection we come to you

  795. not as the wise and Powerful of the

  796. earth not as those who are in the inner

  797. ring but as the weak the needy the lowly

  798. born those who in the eyes of the world

  799. are

  800. nothing we want to come before you and

  801. say this is where we find the banquet of

  802. life this is where we find full

  803. provision this is where we find the true

  804. promised

  805. land so help us Lord

  806. God humble us and open our eyes that we

  807. might see where true life and true

  808. satisfaction is found in Jesus name we

  809. pray amen
