  1. Men, let's turn over to John chapter number eight.

  2. We're going to come back to Deuteronomy chapter 19,

    Deuteronomy 19 chapter mention

  3. but I want to pick up where we left off in John chapter eight.

  4. This morning we went over the famous story

  5. about the woman taken in adultery.

  6. And after Jesus deals with that whole situation,

  7. he continues preaching to the people.

  8. And as he's preaching to good people,

  9. as he's preaching to people who want to hear

  10. the word of God, who love truth,

  11. who are interested in actually hearing the word of God,

  12. there are also just Pharisees and people

  13. that are just kind of heckling him and fighting with him.

  14. And that's we're going to look at.

  15. And I want to preach this evening

  16. on the subject of Jesus, the faithful and true witness.

  17. Jesus, the faithful and true witness.

  18. So look at verse number 12 of John chapter eight.

  19. This is where Jesus begins to preach once again.

  20. And Jesus spake again unto them saying,

  21. I am the light of the world.

  22. He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness,

  23. but shall have the light of life.

  24. And isn't that the truth that in this world of darkness,

  25. if we follow Jesus Christ,

  26. we're not going to walk in darkness,

  27. we'll have the light of life.

  28. God's word is a lamp unto our feet

  29. and a light unto our path.

  30. And without Christ,

  31. we're just kind of going through life blind.

  32. And you see people just kind of stumbling through life.

  33. They don't know what is right.

  34. They don't know what decisions to make.

  35. And they end up doing so many foolish things,

  36. especially when they're younger.

  37. You know, it's nice to have the Bible as a guidebook

  38. telling you exactly what is right, what is wrong.

  39. And, you know, even with the Bible as our guide,

  40. life could be a little bit confusing sometimes

  41. and we struggle sometimes.

  42. But at least there are certain things

  43. that we know for sure,

  44. some anchor points that we have,

  45. a rock that we can be founded on,

  46. that, hey, as long as I know

  47. that I'm following the Bible

  48. in all my ways, if I acknowledge him,

  49. he'll direct my paths.

  50. And that gives us assurance

  51. that as we walk through this world,

  52. we can have the light of life guiding us

  53. if we're following Jesus.

  54. And make no mistake about it,

  55. to follow Jesus is to follow the word of God, right?

  56. Jesus is not gonna physically appear to you

  57. and say, all right, follow me,

  58. you know, and you're literally gonna,

  59. you know, get in your car

  60. or follow him on foot or something like that.

  61. No, the idea here is that we have the word of God,

  62. we have the words of Jesus Christ.

  63. And if we follow these words,

  64. our path will be illuminated.

  65. He'll lead us where we need to go.

  66. But as Jesus begins to preach this positive message,

  67. he's trying to help people.

  68. He doesn't want people to be in darkness.

  69. He wants to shine the light of the knowledge

  70. of God's word and the glorious light of the gospel.

  71. The Pharisees, you know, they jump in

  72. and they begin to challenge him and heckle him.

  73. And the Pharisees therefore said to him,

  74. well, thou bearest record of thyself,

  75. thy record is not true.

  76. Now, why are the Pharisees saying this to him?

  77. What they're actually doing is they're taking something

  78. that Jesus has already preached to them previously

  79. and throwing it back in his face,

  80. but they're taking it out of context.

  81. So back up just a couple of pages,

  82. keep your finger there and go back to John chapter five.

  83. And this is what people will often do.

  84. They'll often latch onto something in the Bible

  85. and they'll throw it in your face as a Christian,

  86. especially even people who don't even claim

  87. to believe the Bible, atheists and agnostics

  88. and people will, well, doesn't the Bible say X, Y, and Z?

  89. And they'll pull something out of context

  90. and throw it in your face.

  91. These people don't even believe the words of Jesus Christ,

  92. but they're gonna try to use his own words against him.

  93. And of course, Jesus, you know,

  94. is able to outmaneuver them as always.

  95. But look at verse number 31 of chapter five.

  96. Here's what they're referring to.

  97. Jesus said, if I bear witness of myself,

  98. my witness is not true.

  99. Okay, so this is a statement Jesus is making.

  100. If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.

  101. They're misunderstanding this foolishly

  102. because they are spiritually blinded people.

  103. They think that what he's saying,

  104. hey, whatever I say about myself,

  105. you can't trust what I say about myself

  106. because, you know, if I talk about myself, I'm lying.

  107. Now that's obviously a stupid way to interpret this,

  108. but that's basically how they're using,

  109. oh, you're bearing witness against yourself.

  110. Your witness isn't true.

  111. But look what it says in context.

  112. Back up one verse to verse 30.

  113. Jesus says, I can of my own self do nothing

  114. as I hear I judge and my judgment is just

  115. because I seek not my own will,

  116. but the will of the Father which had sent me.

  117. If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.

  118. There is another that bear witness of me

  119. and I know that the witness

  120. which he witnesses of me is true.

  121. What Jesus is actually saying is,

  122. if I am the only one who's bearing witness of myself,

  123. then my witness is not true.

  124. He's not saying I can't bear witness of myself.

  125. He's saying, well, no, if I'm just all by myself

  126. and I'm the only one bearing witness of myself,

  127. then my testimony is not true.

  128. He said there's someone else,

  129. there's another person that is bearing witness of me

  130. as well and that is God the Father.

  131. So God the Father and me are the two witnesses.

  132. Now look, the Pharisees should have comprehended this

  133. in John chapter five

  134. because it's not that complicated, is it?

  135. I mean, we just look at it there in verses 30 through 32.

  136. It's pretty clear what Jesus is saying,

  137. but it went right over their head.

  138. And so Jesus is gonna have to explain this again

  139. in chapter eight.

  140. Now, this is such an important point here.

  141. Don't miss this because the doctrine of the Trinity

  142. is often under attack.

  143. And when we say the doctrine of the Trinity,

  144. here's what we mean is that we believe

  145. that God eternally exists as three persons,

  146. the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.

  147. So we do not believe that Jesus is God the Father

  148. or that God the Father is Jesus.

  149. These are distinct persons of the Godhead,

  150. the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.

  151. The Father is God, the Son is God,

  152. the Holy Spirit is God, okay?

  153. But they are not each other, they are distinct entities,

  154. they are distinct persons.

  155. And we also know that there's only one God.

  156. So some people would point to this as a contradiction

  157. saying that there's only one God,

  158. but that God consists of Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

  159. But here's the thing, that's what the Bible says.

  160. And there's no other God to compare him to

  161. because there is only one God that has ever existed

  162. or ever will exist and that one and only God

  163. eternally exists as three persons,

  164. the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.

  165. And this is called the Trinity, which means three in one.

  166. So it's three persons, one God.

  167. And not only that, but the Father and the Son

  168. are co-equal, the Holy Ghost is co-equal meaning

  169. that one of them is not like more God

  170. than the other or something like that.

  171. But they're all equally divine.

  172. They are all equally eternal, right?

  173. It's not that the Father created the Son.

  174. No, Jesus Christ has always existed and always will exist.

  175. And so that's why we say God eternally exists

  176. as Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

  177. Now you say, well, how do you prove this from the Bible?

  178. Well, it's very easy to prove this from the Bible.

  179. People will try to come at you like

  180. this is some super difficult, complicated doctrine

  181. or that it took hundreds of years

  182. for people to figure this out or something like that.

  183. But really it's not complicated

  184. because all you need is just a few basic facts.

  185. And really they're all found in the Gospel of John.

  186. And you could go to the rest of the Bible

  187. and support this, but even if all you had

  188. on a desert island is just the Gospel of John,

  189. you could still easily derive the Trinity.

  190. Okay, and here's how we know the Trinity is real

  191. because over and over again,

  192. the Bible states that there's only one God.

  193. So we can kind of take that to the bank, one God,

  194. not two gods, three gods, multiple gods.

  195. No, there's only one God.

  196. So we know that, that's clear, okay?

  197. We also know that Jesus is God.

  198. That's also very clear because we go through

  199. and we find all these verses like in John 1-1.

  200. You know, in the beginning was the word,

  201. the word was with God and the word was God.

  202. And the word was made flesh and dwelt among us

  203. and we beheld his glory.

  204. The glory is that the only begotten of the Father

  205. full of grace and truth, Hebrews 1-8 unto the Son he saith,

  206. thy throne, O God, is forever and ever.

  207. Oh, whoops, we're only restricting ourselves

  208. to the Gospel of John.

  209. Well, how about when Thomas actually is confronted

  210. by the resurrected Jesus Christ

  211. and he tells him to check the holes in his hands

  212. and check the hole in his side

  213. and Thomas calls Jesus, my Lord and my God.

  214. And he says, blessed are you, Thomas,

  215. because you believed.

  216. So he praises him for making that confession

  217. that Jesus is his Lord and his God.

  218. In the beginning was the word, he was with God

  219. and he was God.

  220. How could he be with God and God same God?

  221. Because he's with the Father

  222. and he also is God himself

  223. because the Father is God and the Son is God.

  224. So there's really three facts

  225. that you need to derive the training.

  226. Not complicated, folks.

  227. Fact number one, there's only one God.

  228. Fact number two, Jesus is God.

  229. And fact number three is Jesus

  230. and God the Father are two different persons.

  231. They are not the same person.

  232. Okay, and this is where sometimes

  233. people will get into heresy

  234. is they'll think that Jesus and God the Father

  235. are the same person.

  236. And they think that God the Father sent himself

  237. to be the savior of the world

  238. or that the Father became the Son.

  239. This heresy is known as modalism

  240. or oneness Pentecostalism

  241. because out of the Pentecostals of this world,

  242. 75% of them believe in the Trinity

  243. but there is a faction called oneness Pentecostalism

  244. that believes in this foolish

  245. Jesus only oneness doctrine.

  246. And it is heretical.

  247. Here's one of the powerful pieces of evidence

  248. right in front of your face here.

  249. He says, if I bear witness of myself,

  250. my witness is not true.

  251. There's another that beareth witness of me

  252. and I know that the witness

  253. which he witnesses of me is true.

  254. Now here's the thing.

  255. If Jesus were just alone bearing witness of himself,

  256. he says, well I'm lying then.

  257. But I don't know, there's somebody else

  258. bearing witness of me

  259. and that someone else is God the Father.

  260. If Jesus and God the Father were the same person

  261. then how is that another?

  262. How is that someone else?

  263. If I went to court and gave testimony

  264. and said, okay, we got another witness now.

  265. Don't worry, it's not just one witness,

  266. it's not just Stephen Anderson the pastor,

  267. it's gonna be Stephen Anderson the husband

  268. is gonna testify.

  269. And then Stephen Anderson the father is gonna testify.

  270. And then Stephen Anderson the son is gonna testify.

  271. And then Stephen Anderson the friend is gonna testify.

  272. That would be absurd because it's all the same person.

  273. But the Bible clearly states that Jesus and God the Father

  274. are two witnesses like in a courtroom

  275. kind of an analogy here

  276. that you got the father testifying

  277. and you got the son testifying

  278. and this gives credence to what is being said.

  279. Look at chapter eight now with that in mind.

  280. So in chapter eight, verse 13,

  281. the Pharisees said unto him,

  282. thou bearest record of thyself,

  283. thy record is not true.

  284. Jesus answered and said unto them,

  285. though I bear record of myself,

  286. yet my record is true,

  287. for I know whence I came and whither I go,

  288. but you cannot tell whence I come and whither I go,

  289. ye judge after the flesh, I judge no man,

  290. and yet if I judge, my judgment is true,

  291. for I am not alone,

  292. and we're gonna come back to the other things he said,

  293. but I wanna focus on this now.

  294. I'm not alone, but I am the father that sent me.

  295. Now look, if modalism or oneness Pentecostal type doctrine

  296. were true, then he is alone, it's just him.

  297. They call it the Jesus only movement.

  298. Well no, it's not a Jesus only movement,

  299. it's Jesus and the father that sent him.

  300. And this would be extremely disingenuous

  301. for him to invoke a second witness of God the Father

  302. if he and God the Father are the same person.

  303. That would make no sense.

  304. Look what he says, it is also,

  305. and this is where modalism just goes

  306. all the way out the window.

  307. It says in verse number 17,

  308. it is also written in your law

  309. that the testimony of two men is true.

  310. I'm one that beareth witness of myself

  311. and the father that sent me beareth witness of me.

  312. So he's saying just as two separate men going into court

  313. and giving corroborating testimonies,

  314. two witnesses are coming and testifying,

  315. well, there's me and there's God the Father.

  316. If they were the same person, that's not two witnesses.

  317. And by the way, the most famous verse on the Trinity,

  318. first John chapter five verse seven,

  319. it says there are three that bear record.

  320. And if you say the context there of that passage,

  321. bear record is used synonymously with bearing witness.

  322. Testifying, it says there are three that testify,

  323. there are three that bear witness,

  324. there are three that bear record.

  325. If we receive the witness of men,

  326. the witness of God is greater.

  327. And so it's a courtroom, kind of an analogy being used.

  328. And he says there are three that bear record in heaven,

  329. the Father, the Word and the Holy Ghost

  330. and these three are one.

  331. So the actual context of first John five, seven,

  332. is that it's not just three that are in heaven,

  333. it's three witnesses that are in heaven bearing record,

  334. three that are testifying and those three are one,

  335. meaning that they agree in one,

  336. they're giving the same testimony, they're united.

  337. And so yes, there are definitely three persons,

  338. one God and people will make fun of biblical doctrine

  339. and sometimes by saying,

  340. oh, you mean Jesus is in the Garden of Gethsemane,

  341. praying to himself?

  342. He's absolutely not praying to himself.

  343. Jesus is praying to God the Father.

  344. It's that simple.

  345. So people are making fun of something

  346. that isn't even taught in Christianity

  347. other than this offshoot of the oneness Pentecostal cult.

  348. When it comes to actual mainstream evangelical Christianity,

  349. Baptist churches, independent Baptist churches,

  350. they teach the Trinity and so they don't believe

  351. that Jesus is praying to himself,

  352. that he didn't send himself.

  353. And he even says,

  354. I came not to do my own will,

  355. but the will of him that sent me.

  356. That would be an extremely disingenuous statement

  357. if he is the one who sent himself.

  358. That would make no sense.

  359. And so notice what Jesus is saying here.

  360. You know, I wanna break this down for you

  361. because sometimes it's easy to get lost

  362. in the language here of what's being said.

  363. He says in verse 14,

  364. though I bear record of myself,

  365. yet my record is true,

  366. for I know whence I came and whether I go,

  367. but you cannot tell whence I come and whether I go.

  368. He said, look, I am a truthful, accurate,

  369. faithful, reliable witness.

  370. He's saying, I know what I'm talking about.

  371. If I bear witness about myself,

  372. I can actually give accurate information about myself

  373. because I know where I came from

  374. and I know where I'm going.

  375. Whereas if you guys testify about me,

  376. you guys don't know anything about me.

  377. You don't know where I came from.

  378. You don't know where I'm going.

  379. Later on he's gonna tell me,

  380. you guys don't know the father either.

  381. You see, in order for a witness

  382. to bring something valuable to the table,

  383. they have to know what they're talking about.

  384. A bunch of people just saying things

  385. isn't what we're talking about.

  386. We need people to bear witness or testify

  387. that actually have firsthand knowledge,

  388. that actually have something to bring to the table

  389. and that are actually reliable.

  390. I mean, if you were to walk into a courtroom,

  391. hearsay is not allowed.

  392. Repeating rumors, or I heard this person say that

  393. and this guy said this and everybody's saying it.

  394. No, no, no.

  395. What happens is the testimony that counts

  396. is the actual firsthand knowledge that people have.

  397. Jesus is saying, well, I, testifying of myself,

  398. actually makes sense

  399. because I actually know about myself.

  400. I know what's going on.

  401. Now, if I were all by myself, I could be lying.

  402. But I'm not lying.

  403. I'm telling the truth

  404. because the father is with me.

  405. He's backing me up.

  406. The Bible's backing me up.

  407. Search the scriptures for in them

  408. you think you have eternal life

  409. and they be they which testify of me.

  410. They bear witness of me.

  411. And so he's like, I'm not alone

  412. because the Bible is backing me up.

  413. God the father is backing me up.

  414. So that's why he says, though I bear record of myself,

  415. yet my record is true

  416. for I know whence I came and whether I go

  417. but you cannot tell whence I come and whether I go

  418. because remember in the previous chapter,

  419. they're confused.

  420. They don't even know that he's born in Bethlehem.

  421. They're confused about where he's from

  422. and they're confused about where he's going in this chapter.

  423. He says, you judge after the flesh, I judge no man

  424. and yet if I judge, my judgment is true

  425. for I am not alone, but I am the father that sent me.

  426. Now this could seem contradictory on the surface.

  427. Again, if you're not paying attention

  428. and if you're not listening to the context

  429. when he says, well, I judge no man

  430. but then in the next breath he says, yet if I judge.

  431. So which one is it?

  432. Does he judge no man or does he judge?

  433. Because in the next breath he says, well, if I judge,

  434. here is what's going on.

  435. He's saying here, I judge no man

  436. because all he's really doing is just coming

  437. and just repeating or relating the judgments

  438. that have already been laid down in God's word

  439. before he was even born.

  440. And I'm talking about humanly speaking.

  441. Obviously Jesus eternally exists

  442. but as far as his human existence,

  443. the Old Testament was already completed

  444. and 100% written before Jesus Christ was born

  445. in Bethlehem's manger.

  446. And so here's the thing, people will often accuse us

  447. as Christians of judging people and say,

  448. oh man, Pastor Anderson, I heard your sermon

  449. and it was super judgmental.

  450. But here's the thing, in the sermon

  451. I was preaching Bible verses that condemned various sins.

  452. And I'm like, hey, the Bible says here

  453. that this sin is wrong

  454. and the Bible says over here that this is wrong

  455. and the Bible says over here

  456. that we need to stop doing this.

  457. Oh, Pastor Anderson, you're super judgmental.

  458. You know what?

  459. I could get up and say, I judge no man.

  460. I'm not judging anybody.

  461. I'm literally just repeating the judgment

  462. that was made by the judge.

  463. For example, if you go to court,

  464. ultimately the final verdict,

  465. the final judgment is typically passed down

  466. in the United States by the jury, right?

  467. The jury is the one who delivers that verdict

  468. of guilty or not guilty.

  469. But are they the ones who actually read the verdict?

  470. No, typically the verdict is handed to some kind,

  471. and I hope I'm getting this right,

  472. but I believe it's like the bailiff or something, right?

  473. It's some kind of an officer of the court

  474. that will read the verdict that says,

  475. we the jury find so-and-so guilty

  476. or we find him not guilty, right?

  477. Now, would you say that that bailiff

  478. is the one passing judgment

  479. because they're reading what the jury found?

  480. No, the ones who actually passed the judgment

  481. are the jurors.

  482. Even if the jurors aren't the ones doing the talking,

  483. all the bailiff is doing, or whoever that is,

  484. is just reading what conclusion the jury came to.

  485. And here's the thing, the preacher of God's word,

  486. if he gets up and says,

  487. thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not commit adultery,

  488. thou shalt do no murder, all he's doing

  489. is just reading the verdict

  490. that God has already pronounced.

  491. You know, and if he gets up and reads the verdict

  492. that God pronounced, thou shalt not print any marks

  493. upon your body, you know?

  494. And then he's like, oh, there it's so judgmental of tattoos.

  495. It's like, well, bro, I'm just reading what God said.

  496. God said don't do it.

  497. God said it's a sin.

  498. God said it's wrong.

  499. God said don't fornicate.

  500. God said don't be drunk with wine.

  501. God said not to covet or bear false witness.

  502. And so Jesus Christ, what did he say?

  503. He said, you know what?

  504. I didn't come into the world to condemn the world.

  505. I came that the world might be saved.

  506. So Jesus said that he did not come to condemn the world

  507. but that the world through him might be saved.

  508. But then in the next breath, he said,

  509. he that believe it not is condemned already.

  510. You know, the reason Jesus didn't come to condemn the world

  511. is because the world's already condemned

  512. because before Jesus was born in Bethlehem's major,

  513. the Old Testament scripture already existed.

  514. It already proclaimed what is right and what is wrong

  515. and every single human being on the planet

  516. was coming short of the glory of God because they've all sinned.

  517. All Jesus did was show up,

  518. point out the obvious of the sinfulness of mankind

  519. and then provide salvation and provide a way to be saved

  520. and say on the light of the world, you know,

  521. he's trying to preach a message of hope here

  522. but of course the Pharisees want to fight him

  523. and heckle him and so forth.

  524. So that's what he means when he says I judge no man

  525. and yet if I judge my judgment's true,

  526. why is my judgment true?

  527. Because I'm not alone, I am the father that sent me.

  528. You know, it's like if I judge somebody up here

  529. with the Bible in my hand as a preacher

  530. and I'm not saying me personally any preacher gets up

  531. and uses the Bible to pass judgment

  532. on some wicked action or sin,

  533. he can say, hey, I'm not alone.

  534. It's God the father that's with me.

  535. It's the Bible and the word of God that's with me.

  536. This is all stuff that God has stated in his word.

  537. So he says, yet if I judge, my judgment is true

  538. for I'm not alone, but I am the father that sent me.

  539. It's also written in your law

  540. that the testimony of two men is true.

  541. I'm one, the bear witness of myself

  542. and the father that sent me,

  543. bear witness of me, powerful proof here

  544. that modalism or oneness is wrong

  545. and that we must come to the conclusion of the Trinity

  546. because of those three facts

  547. that there's only one God, Jesus is God

  548. and Jesus is clearly not God the father.

  549. Because you say, you know, can you count to two?

  550. You know, ideally you can count to three,

  551. then you can get the whole Trinity.

  552. But at least if you can count to two here,

  553. you can figure out I'm one, that's one

  554. and then the father is two, right?

  555. Now I wanna kind of home in on this verse here

  556. where he says it's written in your law

  557. that the testimony of two men is true.

  558. Again, this is one of those things

  559. that if taken in isolation, if taken out of context,

  560. could easily be misunderstood to mean

  561. well if two people testify of something

  562. it's automatically true

  563. and obviously that's very silly to believe that, isn't it?

  564. What Jesus is referring to when he says

  565. it's written in your law that the testimony

  566. of two men is true is Deuteronomy 19.

  567. So go back to Deuteronomy chapter 19

    Deuteronomy 19 chapter mention

  568. and let's look at that.

  569. And what Jesus means when he says

  570. it's written in your law that the testimony

  571. of two men is true, true there means faithful,

  572. reliable, trustworthy, right?

  573. That's what true means in this context.

  574. And so he's saying, you know what?

  575. You can rely on the testimony of two people

  576. whereas the testimony of one person is dubious, right?

  577. If one person comes forward

  578. and accuses someone of a crime

  579. then the veracity of that is dubious

  580. because a lot of times people

  581. can just make things up out of thin air

  582. or even if they're not making things up

  583. they could just remember things wrong

  584. and the human memory is a very fallible thing

  585. and a lot of times years go by

  586. and even just short periods of time go by

  587. and people become confused about timelines

  588. and facts and details.

  589. And so it's easy for one person

  590. to screw up and bring the wrong evidence.

  591. And if we're talking about serious crimes

  592. that involve the death penalty

  593. you don't wanna accidentally execute the wrong person

  594. and then later, oh whoops, that guy wasn't even guilty.

  595. The real criminal is still running loose

  596. and we've accidentally executed the wrong man, right?

  597. This is a horrible miscarriage of justice.

  598. We don't want that to happen.

  599. So the Bible has this safety that says,

  600. hey, no one witness is gonna cause someone

  601. to be put to death.

  602. You know, you're not gonna declare someone guilty

  603. and put them to death on the mouth of one witness.

  604. It's gonna be in the mouth of two or three witnesses

  605. that those kind of judgments would be pronounced.

  606. But the Bible also warns us

  607. that even when there are two or three witnesses

  608. that sometimes they're still lying.

  609. It doesn't mean 100% that, oh, if two people say it,

  610. it's guaranteed to be true.

  611. That's not what Jesus is saying.

  612. Jesus is basically just giving a short,

  613. just quick version of the concept

  614. that you need two people in order to have

  615. a reliable witness.

  616. So he's saying, I'm one, the father's the other,

  617. there's your two witnesses.

  618. He's not actually going into like a big dissertation

  619. on criminal justice,

  620. because that's already in Deuteronomy 19,

  621. and that's what he's referring back to.

  622. And so go back to Deuteronomy 19,

  623. and what you'll see is that the Bible is very clear

  624. that a lot of times, even with two or three witnesses,

  625. people can still be lying,

  626. which is why you still have to investigate

  627. and prove all things and make diligent inquisition.

  628. Now I'm gonna show you right now,

  629. we're gonna look at Deuteronomy 19,

  630. and then I'm just gonna show you just

  631. an absurd number of Bible verses that prove what I just said.

  632. Because a lot of people, they just think,

  633. well, two or three witnesses, okay, it's closed.

  634. Here's the thing about that,

  635. is that I'm about to show you just a massive number

  636. of Bible verses that show how absurd that conclusion is

  637. to think that two or three witnesses

  638. automatically equals guilt, because it doesn't.

  639. And it frequently doesn't.

  640. And again, this is not like some really rare thing.

  641. Wow, there could be these really rare situations.

  642. Super rare situation where there's two or three witnesses

  643. and it turns out to be false.

  644. No, no, no, this is a frequent problem,

  645. which is why there's scripture after scripture

  646. after scripture, that's why this made it

  647. into the Ten Commandments.

  648. I mean, look, the Ten Commandments

  649. are only giving you the big ones.

  650. Thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not kill,

  651. thou shalt not commit adultery,

  652. thou shalt not take the name of the Lord

  653. thy God in vain.

  654. And it's interesting that in the top 10,

  655. what did we get?

  656. We got, thou shalt not bear false witness

  657. against thy neighbor.

  658. Now look, it does not say thou shalt not lie.

  659. And unfortunately, people constantly quote this as

  660. thou shalt not lie.

  661. One of the Ten Commandments is thou shalt not lie.

  662. Now of course, lying is bad, lying's a sin.

  663. But we want to make sure that we get this right.

  664. The Ten Commandments is,

  665. thou shalt not bear false witness

  666. against thy neighbor.

  667. That's pretty specific.

  668. That's a specific kind of lying.

  669. And for me, if I look at that,

  670. I'm gonna think to myself,

  671. well this must not be some super rare thing.

  672. Is killing rare?

  673. Is stealing rare?

  674. Is adultery rare?

  675. Is covetousness rare?

  676. Is taking God's name in vain rare?

  677. Is idolatry rare?

  678. No, these are things that billions of people

  679. in this world are doing.

  680. Billions of idolaters.

  681. Billions of people with another God before the Lord.

  682. Billions of people taking the Lord's name in vain.

  683. Billions of people dishonoring their parents.

  684. Billions stealing, billions killing,

  685. billions committing adultery.

  686. Well, you know what that tells me?

  687. That there's probably millions and billions of people

  688. bearing false witness against their neighbor.

  689. Or is it just the only obscure commandment

  690. that isn't happening en masse?

  691. It makes a lot more sense to think,

  692. yeah, there's probably a lot of people

  693. that are false witnesses.

  694. Jesus is a true faithful witness we can rely on.

  695. God, the Father is a true witness.

  696. Jesus and the Father, I'm sold, I'm convinced, right?

  697. I'm done.

  698. But let's see what the Bible actually says.

  699. Look at Deuteronomy 1915.

  700. It says, one witness shall not rise up against a man

  701. for any iniquity or for any sin in any sin that he sinned

  702. at the mouth of two witnesses

  703. or at the mouth of three witnesses

  704. shall the matter be established.

  705. And then right away it's if a false witness rise up.

  706. So as soon as he finishes saying,

  707. yeah, you need two or three witnesses,

  708. he says, if a false witness rise up.

  709. So this is something that you need to watch out for

  710. right away.

  711. So that's why Jesus made the point of saying,

  712. well, first of all, I'm reliable.

  713. And second of all, it's me and the Father.

  714. He didn't just jump in and say,

  715. oh, I'm not alone, it's me and the Father.

  716. He said, first, let's establish the fact

  717. that I'm reliable.

  718. He's saying, if I bear witness, I'm telling the truth.

  719. I know what I'm talking about.

  720. I know where I'm from.

  721. I know where I'm going.

  722. I know the Father.

  723. So he's saying, I'm reliable.

  724. And then he doesn't spend a lot of time explaining

  725. that God's reliable because that's obvious

  726. that God the Father is reliable.

  727. So notice it's not just, oh, it's me and the Father.

  728. It's I'm reliable and it's me and the Father.

  729. That's important because there's a big if here

  730. if a false witness rise up against any man

  731. to testify against him that which is wrong,

  732. then both the men between whom the controversy is

  733. shall stand before the Lord,

  734. before the priests and the judges,

  735. which shall be in those days.

  736. And the judges shall make diligent inquisition

  737. and behold, if the witness be a false witness

  738. and a testified falsely against his brother,

  739. then shall you do unto him

  740. as he had thought to have done unto his brother.

  741. So shall to put the evil away from among you

  742. and those which remain shall hear and fear

  743. and shall henceforth commit no more

  744. any such evil among you.

  745. So here's the thing.

  746. Do you go to court and falsely testify today

  747. and bear false witness in court

  748. and you lie under what is that called today in America?

  749. Perjury, right?

  750. And the Bible actually uses that word.

  751. Also in the New Testament, perjured persons,

  752. people who've perjured themselves.

  753. This is a biblical term.

  754. This is a term in America.

  755. But here's the thing.

  756. Perjury, yeah, it's a crime.

  757. Perjury, yeah, you're gonna get a punishment

  758. but you're probably gonna get a fairly minor punishment

  759. for perjury.

  760. You know, I mean, yeah, it's a serious crime

  761. but are you gonna get put to death?

  762. No way.

  763. Are you gonna get life in prison?

  764. No, you're not.

  765. You're gonna be punished.

  766. But here's the thing.

  767. In God's law, he was so serious about perjury

  768. that he says, hey, we need to have a punishment

  769. for perjury that is super scary

  770. so that people will be really afraid to do this.

  771. So that's why he says, those which remain, verse 20,

  772. shall hear and fear and shall henceforth commit no more

  773. any such evil among you.

  774. He said, people should be scared and terrified

  775. just hearing about this happening to people

  776. and being like, dang, I will not perjure myself.

  777. I'm not gonna bear false witness

  778. because, dang, what's the punishment?

  779. The punishment is whatever the person is being accused of,

  780. you get that punishment.

  781. So therefore, if someone is being accused

  782. of first degree murder and you bear false witness,

  783. you'll be put to death for perjury.

  784. Or let's say it's stealing

  785. and the person has to pay fourfold

  786. and they have to pay quadruple what they stole

  787. or quintuple what they stole

  788. then imagine you make up some testimony,

  789. you plant some evidence, you fake some evidence

  790. or bear false witness, now all of a sudden

  791. you're paying fivefold, right?

  792. Or let's say that the person was supposed to be whipped

  793. and they get beaten or flogged for the crime

  794. and then you bear false witness,

  795. you're getting the beating or flogging.

  796. So these are serious punishments

  797. and that's why the Bible says in verse 21,

  798. by an eye shall not pity, but life shall go for life.

  799. So he's saying that this thing of giving them

  800. whatever punishment they wanted for you,

  801. it goes all the way up to the death penalty

  802. because he says, your eye shall not pity

  803. but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth,

  804. hand for hand, foot for foot, I mean he's saying

  805. whatever it is, that's the punishment.

  806. And he's saying don't pity, don't be like,

  807. yeah, I know that she lied, yeah, I know that he lied

  808. but you know, it seems a little crazy

  809. that the death penalty would be the result

  810. or that they would have to pay a $50,000 fine

  811. or that they would have to be flogged and whatever.

  812. And God's saying, no, no, no, don't have mercy on this.

  813. If somebody is bearing false witness, man,

  814. they need the book thrown at them

  815. so that people will hear about it and be scared

  816. and an example will be made, do not bear false witness.

  817. Because it should mean something

  818. when people walk into a courtroom

  819. and swear to tell the truth, the whole truth

  820. and nothing but the truth will help me God,

  821. that should mean something.

  822. Or even if they just affirm to tell the truth,

  823. the whole truth, nothing but the truth,

  824. hey, that should mean something.

  825. People should take that seriously.

  826. Now I told you I was gonna read you a whole bunch of verses

  827. and that's what I'm gonna do right now

  828. because I wanna show you that this is not just some minor,

  829. oh, what if, here's a wild scenario,

  830. here's something that you can't possibly imagine,

  831. what if one of the witnesses is a false witness?

  832. That would never happen.

  833. Hey, it's in the Ten Commandments

  834. because it's happening billions of times.

  835. Murders happening billions of times,

  836. stealing, all the rest of them are happening

  837. over the course of human history

  838. millions and billions of times, they just are.

  839. So let's look at some scriptures

  840. and you don't have to turn to all of these

  841. because I'm gonna rattle through them pretty quick

  842. but I do want you to turn to Exodus chapter 23.

    Exodus 23 chapter mention

  843. So I'm just gonna have you selectively turn to these

  844. but I'm gonna read a whole bunch of them, okay.

  845. Obviously we already talked about the Ten Commandments,

  846. Exodus 20 verse 16,

    Exodus 20:16

  847. thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor

  848. but look at Exodus chapter 23 verse one.

    Exodus 23 chapter mention

  849. It says, thou shalt not raise a false report

  850. but here's the key part I don't want you to miss.

  851. Put not thine hand with the wicked

  852. to be an unrighteous witness.

  853. Now let me ask you this,

  854. if you are putting your hand with the wicked

  855. to be an unrighteous witness,

  856. do we have one witness or at least two?

  857. This is a minimum of two false witnesses

  858. because here's the thing,

  859. how can I put my hand with the unrighteous

  860. to be a false witness

  861. except that that person's already lying

  862. and I'm going to join them in the lie

  863. so now we have how many liars minimum of two

  864. but possibly we could be grabbing three, four, five people

  865. and getting them all to lie

  866. but we have a minimum of two false witnesses

  867. in Exodus chapter 23 verse one.

    Exodus 23 chapter mention

  868. Flip over if you would to Psalms

  869. and look at Psalm 27

  870. and while you're turning to Psalm 27

  871. of course, Deuteronomy 5 20 says,

  872. thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

  873. The Bible says in Proverbs 6 19

  874. a false witness speaketh lies.

  875. Right, Proverbs 12 17

  876. he that speaketh truth showeth forth righteousness

  877. but a false witness deceit.

  878. Proverbs 14 5, a false witness will not lie

  879. but a false excuse me, a faithful witness will not lie

  880. but a false witness will utter lies.

  881. Proverbs 19 5, a false witness shall not be unpunished

  882. and he that speaketh lies shall not escape.

  883. Same exact thing in verse nine,

  884. a false witness shall not be unpunished.

  885. He that speaketh lies shall perish.

  886. Proverbs 21 verse 28, a false witness shall perish

    Proverbs 21:28

  887. but the man that heareth speaketh constantly.

  888. Let's come back to that one, that one's so good

  889. we're going to turn to that one

  890. but let's look at Psalms

  891. did I ever turn to Psalm 27?

  892. Look at verse 12,

  893. deliver me not over unto the will of my enemies

  894. for false witnesses are risen up against me

  895. and such as breathe out cruelty.

  896. Are we talking about one false witness here

  897. or are we talking about multiple?

  898. Talking about two, three or more

  899. false witnesses risen up against me.

  900. Look at chapter 35 verse 11

  901. and look I want you to just

  902. I want you to appreciate the sheer volume

  903. of verses that I'm showing you right now

  904. about bearing false witness

  905. that this is not a small problem.

  906. This is a big problem.

  907. This is not a rare occurrence.

  908. This is a frequent occurrence

  909. because we're just looking at a whole bunch of verses

  910. and I'm rattling off to you

  911. others that you're not even turning to.

  912. Look at Psalm 35, 11,

  913. false witnesses did rise up, notice the plural.

  914. They laid to my charge things that I knew not.

  915. I mean they're telling stories

  916. and I'm like I don't even know

  917. what they're even talking about.

  918. I don't even know what this is even a reference to.

  919. Crazy things that are just wow

  920. where'd you come up with that one?

  921. Now look at Proverbs 21 verse 28.

    Proverbs 21:28

  922. I already read this one to you

  923. but I wanna stop and look at it

  924. because it's a powerful truth here

  925. in Proverbs 21, 28.

  926. It says a false witness shall perish

  927. but the man that heareth speaketh constantly.

  928. Now the idea here with the man that heareth

  929. it means that this guy actually witnessed something.

  930. Cause when we witness things

  931. we might hear something first hand,

  932. we might see something first hand

  933. and when we say hear we're not talking about hearsay

  934. we're talking about like actually hearing something

  935. like I heard this guy say that

  936. or I heard the car smash into the other car

  937. or I heard the gunshot

  938. or I heard tires screeching or whatever.

  939. A lot of the testimony is gonna be hearing and seeing

  940. and so the man that heareth is

  941. compared to the false witness who's lying

  942. the man that heareth speaketh constantly.

  943. Now what does that mean?

  944. Constantly we would use in our modern vernacular

  945. the word consistently, right?

  946. The man who actually saw something

  947. the man who actually heard something

  948. the man who actually has first hand experiential knowledge

  949. the man who's actually telling the truth

  950. about what happened he speaks consistently.

  951. That's why the police will sit there

  952. and ask people to tell them a story

  953. then they'll get another officer in there

  954. and be like oh I just start from beginning

  955. and tell it to me all over again.

  956. And they're like what in the world

  957. I already told you this whole story

  958. why do you want me to tell it again?

  959. And people get irritated

  960. why do you want to keep hearing the story?

  961. Cause here's what they're looking for

  962. they want to see if you speak constantly.

  963. They want to see are you speaking consistently

  964. or is your story changing constantly?

  965. Right because the person who's telling the truth

  966. they're not making it up

  967. and here's the thing when you make things up

  968. it's hard to keep track of your own lies.

  969. And so you get confused about the details

  970. cause it's a fictional story

  971. that you're making up on the fly

  972. and then next time you tell it

  973. it's going to be a little different.

  974. And the next time you tell it

  975. it's a little different pretty soon

  976. all these holes in your story

  977. and contradictions and things that don't add up.

  978. Whereas the truth fears no investigation, you know

  979. and if you're actually speaking truth

  980. the story is going to stay consistent.

  981. You're going to speak constantly.

  982. Chapter 25 verse 18

  983. you don't have to turn there

  984. but if you would flip over to Malachi chapter three

  985. toward the end of the Old Testament

  986. but Proverbs 25 18 says

  987. a man that beareth false witness

  988. against his neighbor is a mall

  989. and a sword and a sharp arrow, right?

  990. And again, you know

  991. these are weapons that harm

  992. and you know, they harm up close

  993. they harm far away

  994. they harm brutally

  995. they harm in various ways

  996. I already preached about those three weapons

  997. in particular the mall, the sword and the sharp arrow

  998. but look at Malachi chapter three verse five

  999. it says I will come near to you to judgment

1000. and I will be a swift witness

  1001. against the sorcerers

  1002. and against the adulterers

1003. and against false swears, right?

1004. These are people that would maybe go under oath

1005. or swear that something happened

1006. and they're lying, they're bearing false witness

1007. and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages

1008. the widow and the fatherless

1009. and that turn aside the stranger from his right

1010. and fear not me, say it the Lord of hosts

1011. so that you know, there are a couple of things here

1012. that I wanna point out is that

1013. you know, false swarers abound, right?

1014. Just as we've seen so many verses

1015. about false witness so far

  1016. but not only that

1017. we can contrast that with the swift witness, right?

1018. What does it mean to be swift?

1019. Swift means that you're quick

1020. you're Johnny on the spot, right?

1021. We in the United States of America

1022. and also in the state of Arizona

1023. we have enshrined in our constitution, bill of rights

1024. the right to a speedy trial, a speedy trial

1025. and that is defined in the state of Arizona as 180 days,

1026. right, so you know, six months

  1027. that's considered a speedy trial

1028. they always find a way to violate that

1029. and drag it out and make things go on for years or whatever

1030. but in theory, supposedly we are supposed to get

1031. a speedy trial, now why do we need to get a speedy trial?

1032. Because you know what, it's a lot easier

1033. to defend yourself about something

  1034. that just happened recently

1035. than to defend yourself about something

  1036. that happened 10, 15, 20, 30 years ago

1037. this is why a lot of crimes have a statute of limitations

1038. where they'd say, hey, you can't be accused

1039. of something because it's too long ago

1040. because the idea is how can you defend yourself?

1041. So think about this, what if I were,

1042. you know, you think about the kind of proverbial

1043. or kind of cliche, you know, detective show

1044. on the radio in the 1930s or something

  1045. where someone's being interrogated

1046. and it's like, where were you on the night

1047. of May 17th or whatever?

1048. Now here's the thing about that

1049. is that if somebody asked me where I was

1050. last Tuesday, you know, I would have to think

1051. for a second, but then I'm like, oh, well,

1052. and I could tell you exactly where I was last Tuesday,

  1053. I could give you kind of a blow-by-blow

1054. of what I did last Tuesday.

1055. Now if you asked me about the Tuesday before that,

1056. it'd be a little harder, but if I thought really hard

1057. about it, I could figure it out.

1058. The Tuesday before that though,

1059. I don't even have the foggiest idea.

1060. You know, because last Tuesday I was in Leavenwork

1061. with my wife on vacation

1062. and then the Tuesday before that

1063. I was soul winning on an Indian reservation

1064. in Nevada, the Tuesday before that

1065. I have no idea what I did that day.

  1066. I don't have a clue.

1067. So then I would have to start getting out

1068. like my email and I'd have to start going

1069. into my text messages and start going

1070. into my phone log and figure out what was I doing

1071. on Tuesday, you know, less than three weeks ago.

1072. Okay, now it's like, okay, well,

1073. where were you six months ago on this Tuesday evening?

1074. Where were you on this Tuesday in 2016?

1075. Where were you on this Tuesday in 2009?

1076. Does everybody see what I'm saying?

1077. How can you defend yourself?

1078. It's gonna get harder, right?

1079. It's gonna be easier to defend yourself sooner

  1080. rather than later.

1081. Memories are fresh in everybody's mind.

  1082. Everybody's got a fresh memory.

1083. Whereas years and years and years go by,

  1084. everybody's getting confused.

1085. People are forgetting things, but you know,

  1086. that's why it's good sometimes

1087. when major events happen to document them right away.

1088. You document things right away, write it down,

1089. make a video or whatever sometimes to just refresh

1090. like if something major happens, some kind of a crime.

1091. That's why the police are there.

1092. They're taking statements right away.

1093. They're not gonna just, well, let's wait six months

1094. and then take statements from the witnesses.

1095. They wanna get statements on the scene.

1096. They want you talking to them right now.

1097. They wanna bring you in for questioning tomorrow.

1098. They wanna deal with it this week

1099. because the longer that goes by,

1100. the harder it is to establish truth claims, right?

1101. And so here's the thing.

  1102. It's shady and dubious

1103. when people start pulling out accusations

  1104. from 10, 15, 20, 25 years ago.

1105. You know, the faithful witness

1106. tends to be a swift witness.

1107. Basically, it's like, hey, this happened

1108. and I'm gonna talk about it now.

1109. Not like, oh well, I saw this thing 15 years ago,

1110. first hand, but first hand isn't really me.

1111. Because it's first hand or second hand

1112. and first hand is me or my wife.

1113. Saw this thing 15 years ago

1114. and didn't say anything to anybody,

1115. didn't talk to anybody, didn't confront anybody,

1116. didn't call anybody, didn't give the person

1117. being accused a chance to defend themselves,

1118. didn't bring it to their attention or whatever

  1119. because here's the thing.

1120. 15 years later, you can just say anything

1121. and it's like, well, how can you prove something?

1122. Right back then, you could have easily proved

1123. the false accusation to be lies, right?

1124. If somebody's claiming that someone had injuries

1125. that they didn't have, you could just be like,

1126. well, it isn't there, buddy.

1127. Does everybody understand what I'm saying?

1128. But what happens is you fast forward years

1129. and years later these lying false witnesses,

1130. because that's what they are,

1131. what they do is they pull out stuff

1132. from a long time ago.

1133. You know, if you really did get violated

1134. or if someone really got violated

1135. or attacked or robbed or whatever,

1136. it's not like, hey, I'm calling the police.

1137. Someone stole this tool out of my garage six years ago.

1138. I need to file a report about this missing drill

  1139. from six years ago.

1140. Do you think that the police

1141. are gonna take that seriously?

1142. But what if I said, hey, these tools

1143. were taken from my garage six hours ago?

1144. Doesn't that make a little more sense?

1145. Like, who would you trust?

1146. Who would you believe if they're calling

1147. the insurance company and say, hey,

  1148. I need to file a homeowner's insurance claim?

1149. I was robbed three months ago

1150. and I'm just now calling you.

1151. Or I was robbed three hours ago and I'm calling.

1152. Does everybody understand what I'm saying?

1153. And so the faithful witness tends to be a swift witness

1154. and the lying false witness will often just pull things

1155. out and just things that we know not.

1156. Strange accusations from the distant past.

  1157. And again, it's unjust

1158. and our criminal justice system acknowledges this,

1159. which is why there is a statute of limitations

1160. on a lot of things.

1161. Now, a lot of things they don't put

1162. a statute of limitations just because they don't wanna let

1163. really heinous criminals get off the hook.

1164. They don't want somebody to commit first degree murder

1165. and get off on a technicality

1166. because the statute of limitations or something like that.

  1167. But here's the thing.

1168. If they're trying to prove a murder

1169. from 10 years ago, 15 years ago,

  1170. 20, it's gonna be a lot harder

1171. to convince that jury beyond a reasonable doubt.

1172. They're gonna have to have some really hard evidence

1173. much harder than if it were recent.

1174. Because again, it's harder to defend yourself.

1175. It's harder to prove guilt.

1176. People can say whatever they want 20 years later

  1177. about conversations and events

1178. that are so far in the past

1179. that nobody can really prove anything.

1180. And it's just, it's stupid and wrong.

  1181. That's why I like this term.

1182. I will be a swift witness, right?

1183. I'm gonna be one who brings the testimony right away

1184. because I'm telling the truth.

1185. Not pulling something out years later.

1186. Oh, I saw this thing 15 years ago.

  1187. I just didn't say anything.

  1188. It's like, that's just stupid, right?

1189. You know why you didn't say anything 15 years ago

1190. is because you knew it was a lie.

1191. You knew it was stupid.

  1192. You knew your wife's a liar

1193. and you didn't believe your wife.

  1194. That's why you didn't say anything.

1195. Your wife told you a bull crap story

1196. like she tells all kinds of bull crap stories.

1197. And your wife told you a lie.

  1198. You didn't believe it,

1199. which is why you didn't say anything to anybody.

1200. And why you got up and said,

1201. hey, I had no reason not to believe Pastor Anderson.

1202. Pastor Anderson has been 100% truthful, 100% honest.

1203. I had no reason to believe

1204. that he was guilty of anything.

1205. But oh, by the way, my wife told me 15 years ago

1206. that she observed him spank his kid

1207. or his wife spank the kid too hard or whatever.

1208. It's like, bro, you didn't believe her.

1209. That's why for 15 years you had no reason not to believe.

  1210. Everybody understand?

  1211. I mean, I don't know.

1212. I feel like I've been explaining this too many times,

1213. but some people don't get it anyway.

  1214. Let's go to Matthew chapter 15.

    Matthew 15 chapter mention

  1215. Matthew chapter 15.

    Matthew 15 chapter mention

1216. The Bible says in Matthew chapter 15 verse 19,

    Matthew 15:19

  1217. you're already in Malachi.

1218. There's just a few pages to the right in your Bible.

1219. Matthew 15, 19, for out of the heart

1220. proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries,

1221. fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.

1222. You know, these are the things

1223. that come out of the evil heart of man.

  1224. Unfortunately, they're common.

  1225. They're frequent.

1226. Jesus is not giving us a list of every possible sin.

1227. He's just giving us the big ones.

1228. Look at chapter 19 verse 18, same thing.

1229. He's giving us synopsis from the Ten Commandments.

1230. He saith unto them, which Jesus said,

1231. thou shalt do no murder,

1232. thou shalt not commit adultery,

  1233. thou shalt not steal,

1234. thou shalt not bear false witness.

1235. Okay, now look at Matthew 26.

  1236. Matthew chapter 26, say,

    Matthew 26 chapter mention

  1237. I don't know, I'm getting tired

1238. of these false witness verses.

1239. Well, you know, there's just a lot of them.

1240. You know, I'm trying to make a point here,

1241. showing you that there are all kinds

1242. of false accusers and false witnesses.

  1243. And here's what you're gonna notice

1244. about false witnesses, they don't speak constantly.

1245. You know, that's why the Bible says

1246. when false witnesses rise up,

1247. you gotta make diligent inquiry

1248. and figure out who's telling the truth.

1249. And what you're gonna find

1250. is that the false witness,

  1251. he doesn't speak constantly,

  1252. he doesn't speak consistently.

1253. And there are holes in his story,

1254. and there are gonna be inconsistencies

1255. and things that don't match up.

1256. So look at Matthew chapter 26 verse 59.

    Matthew 26:59

1257. Now the chief priests and elders

1258. and all the counsel sought false witness

1259. against Jesus to put him to death.

1260. But found none, watch this,

1261. yay though, many false witnesses came.

1262. So look, did they have a hard time

1263. finding people that would bear false witness?

1264. Is bearing false witness super rare?

  1265. It's just a super rare thing.

1266. So anytime two or three witnesses,

1267. you just take it to the bank, it's true.

1268. Is that what the Bible is teaching?

1269. Because I'm seeing that false witness is frequent.

1270. And so it says that many false witnesses came,

  1271. yet they found none.

1272. Now, how does this work?

1273. Stop and think about this.

1274. If many false witnesses came,

1275. how did they find none?

  1276. You know why?

  1277. Because what it is,

1278. is that a bunch of false witnesses came

1279. and their stories aren't adding up,

  1280. their stories aren't matching.

1281. They're inconsistent with one another.

1282. So even though they have tons of people

  1283. bearing false witness,

1284. oh look, Jesus must be guilty of something.

1285. There's just so many people making accusations,

1286. but the accusations are totally different.

1287. Accusation A is different than accusation B,

  1288. C, D, they're all contradicting one another.

1289. That's not two or three witnesses.

1290. Well, we got two or three witnesses.

1291. Yeah, but if they're dramatically contradicting each other

1292. and found to be lying, then it's zero witnesses.

1293. Because the Bible is counting for us.

1294. We counted to two earlier, we counted to three.

1295. Now we're gonna count to zero.

1296. It says here, they sought false witnesses

1297. against Jesus to put him to death,

  1298. but found how many?

1299. How many did they find?

1300. None, zero that were legitimate,

  1301. that were credible.

1302. Though many false witnesses came yet they found none.

1303. At last came two false witnesses, right?

1304. And they finally find two whose story vaguely agrees.

1305. And they're like, okay, we got it.

  1306. Here we go.

1307. Two people saying that Jesus said

1308. that he was able to destroy the temple

1309. and build it in three days.

1310. Obviously Jesus never said that.

1311. This is a twisting of the truth.

1312. Jesus said to them that if they destroyed this temple,

1313. he would raise it up in three days

1314. and he'd spake up the temple of his body.

1315. He didn't say he was gonna destroy the temple.

1316. He said they were gonna destroy his body,

1317. which is the temple, okay?

1318. And so they're twisting the truth

1319. and they're false witnesses and they're lying.

1320. Look at Mark chapter 10.

    Mark 10 chapter mention

1321. Few pages to the right in your Bible.

1322. Mark chapter 10, I gotta hurry for sake of time here,

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  1323. but Mark chapter 10, verse 19.

    Mark 10:19

1324. Again, we have the 10 commandments.

1325. Actually go straight to 14, sorry.

  1326. Mark 14, because Mark 10, 19 is just

1327. do not bear false witness to fraud not

1328. honor the father and mother, et cetera.

1329. Look at Mark 14, 56 for many

1330. bear false witness against him.

1331. And this is what I was saying about Matthew,

1332. but their witness agreed not together.

  1333. Do you see that?

1334. Their witness agreed not together.

  1335. So think about this.

1336. If what if we have, let me give you a scenario.

1337. Let me just give you a super hypothetical scenario.

1338. Let's say that you have witness A comes along

  1339. and bears witness.

1340. Then witness B comes along and says,

1341. actually witness A is lying.

1342. It happened totally different than that.

  1343. And yeah, he's exaggerating.

1344. He lied and he goes and tells seven different adults

  1345. that witness A lied.

1346. So witness B tells seven different adults

1347. that witness A lied and then he gives

1348. his own different version that contradicts

1349. witness A's on a whole bunch of points.

1350. Everybody following the story right now?

1351. So you have witness A and witness B.

1352. Then witness C comes along and just puts a rubber stamp

1353. and says, everything that witness A and B said is both true.

1354. I mean, this sounds super reliable, doesn't it?

1355. You have witness A telling one story.

1356. Witness B telling a dramatically different story

1357. and quote saying, witness A is a liar.

1358. What witness testified is lies, okay?

1359. Then witness C comes along and says,

1360. every single thing that both of them said is true.

1361. I'll just stamp all of it, right?

1362. Case closed, super reliable, right?

1363. Three witnesses, but see the false witnesses,

1364. their witness agreed not together

1365. and there arose certain and bear false witness

1366. against them and it's the same accusation.

1367. You don't have to turn to Luke, but Luke 18, again,

1368. do not commit adultery, do not kill,

1369. do not steal, do not bear false witness.

  1370. Look at act six.

1371. This is the last place we'll turn, act six.

1372. And then Romans 13, again, you know, quotes,

1373. take commandments, that's not bear false witness.

1374. So how many verses do we have that specifically use

1375. these exact words, false witness, false witnesses,

1376. bearing false witnesses, those exact words,

1377. we have one, two, three, four, five, six,

  1378. seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14,

  1379. 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23,

1380. 24 separate scriptures talking about this.

1381. And that's not even all of them

1382. because we could find other ones

1383. that just don't use that exact word

1384. but they still talk about the concept of false witness.

1385. Because we didn't even go to the Naboth story

1386. where two witnesses rise up against Naboth

1387. and falsely testify and get him put to death.

1388. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

1389. This is just any chimpanzee can just type in false witness

1390. into a Bible search and they're gonna get

1391. 20 some scriptures just right out of the gate,

1392. let alone all the verses that use different wording

1393. and different language to talk about people

  1394. bearing false witness.

1395. Is this a small subject?

1396. Is this a rare sin?

1397. Is this something that rarely occurs?

  1398. No, it isn't.

1399. Look at Acts chapter six verse 13.

1400. The Bible says they set up false witnesses.

  1401. This is against Stephen.

1402. They set up false witnesses which said

1403. this man sees as not to speak blasphemous words

1404. against this holy place and the law.

1405. Of course, that was a lie.

  1406. They didn't do it.

1407. So go to John chapter eight.

1408. Let's wrap up in John chapter eight

1409. now that we took that little rabbit trail

1410. through all the false witness.

1411. So again, just to bring you up to speed here.

1412. Jesus is preaching the gospel.

  1413. Jesus is preaching truth.

1414. Jesus is preaching a positive message.

  1415. Try to help people.

1416. But the Pharisees heckle him,

1417. accuse him of being a liar.

1418. They say, well, you're bearing witness of yourself.

1419. Your testimony is not true.

1420. He answers by basically saying,

1421. well, first of all, I'm reliable

1422. because I know what I'm talking about

1423. and you don't, you don't have the facts I do.

  1424. I was there, you weren't.

1425. So number one, I'm reliable.

1426. Number two, it's not just me bearing witness.

1427. It's also God the Father that is bearing witness.

1428. And if I judge or bear witness,

1429. what I'm saying lines up with the Bible.

1430. It lines up with the word of God.

  1431. Therefore it is true.

1432. Then if we jump down to verse number 19,

1433. let me get there myself.

1434. He says in verse number 19,

1435. then said they unto him, where is thy father?

1436. Cause he said, you know,

1437. hey, the father bears witness of me.

1438. They said unto him, where is thy father?

1439. Jesus answered, you neither know me nor my father.

  1440. If you'd known me,

1441. you would have known my father also, right?

1442. And so again, this goes to show

1443. that people who don't believe in Jesus,

1444. they don't know the God of the Bible.

1445. So Jews are not worshiping God the Father.

1446. Jews are worshiping a false God, false religion.

1447. They're the synagogue of Satan

1448. because the Bible says, you know,

1449. the only way to get to the Father is through Jesus.

1450. No man come unto the Father,

1451. but by me Israeli soldiers kneeling down

  1452. and praying to God,

1453. they're not praying to Jehovah God of the Bible.

1454. They're praying to a fake God of their own imagination,

1455. the fake God of Judaism,

1456. which is not the God of the Bible.

1457. How do I know that?

1458. Because the Bible says if you don't have the son,

1459. you don't have the father.

1460. If you don't have the son, you don't have,

1461. well, they have the same,

1462. no, they don't have the same God

1463. because if you don't have the son,

1464. you don't have the father.

1465. No man comes unto the father, but by Jesus,

1466. he says, you don't know me or my father.

1467. If you had known me,

1468. you would have known my father also, right?

1469. So those of us who know Jesus,

1470. we also know God the Father through Jesus.

1471. Whereas those who don't have Jesus,

1472. they don't know God or Jesus.

  1473. They know neither.

1474. So it says in verse number 20,

1475. these words spake Jesus in the treasury

1476. as he taught in the temple

1477. and no man laid hands on him

1478. for his hour was not yet come.

1479. Then said Jesus unto them,

1480. I go my way and ye shall seek me

1481. and shall die in your sins.

1482. Whether I go, you cannot come.

1483. Then said the Jews, will he kill himself?

1484. Because he saith, whether I go, you cannot come.

1485. Really, where he's actually going is going to heaven

1486. and they're not going because they're not saved.

1487. He said unto them, you're from beneath.

1488. I'm from above, you're of this world,

1489. I am not of this world.

1490. I said therefore unto you that you shall die

1491. in your sins, for if you believe not

1492. that I am he, you shall die in your sins.

1493. Then said they unto him, who art thou?

1494. And Jesus saith unto them, even the same

1495. that I said unto you from the beginning.

1496. I have many things to say and to judge of you,

1497. but he that sent me is true

1498. and I speak to the world those things

1499. which I have heard of him.

1500. They understood not that he spake to them of the father.

1501. Then said Jesus unto them,

1502. when you've lifted up the son of man

1503. then shall you know that I am he

1504. and that I do nothing of myself

1505. but as my father had taught me,

  1506. I speak these things.

1507. And he that had sent me is with me.

1508. The father had not left me alone

1509. for I do always those things that please him

1510. as he spake these words, many believed on him.

1511. And so Jesus here, although he's being heckled

1512. by the Pharisees, although he's arguing

1513. with the Pharisees and what's he telling the Pharisees?

1514. He's not really given the Pharisees

1515. much of a message of hope here.

1516. He's just like, I'm from above, you're from beneath.

1517. You're of this world, I'm not of this world.

1518. You're gonna die in your sins

1519. because if you don't believe that I'm he,

1520. you should die in your sins.

1521. But remember before the Pharisees showed up,

1522. he's teaching all the people in the temple.

1523. There's a huge crowd that he's teaching all the people.

1524. And so this part tends to confuse people a little bit.

1525. So I wanna make sure we understand this correctly.

1526. It says in verse number 31,

1527. then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him.

1528. So not the Pharisees who are heckling him,

  1529. telling him he's a liar.

  1530. He's saying, you don't know me.

1531. You don't know the father.

1532. You guys are gonna die in your sins.

1533. You guys are rot, you know.

1534. He tells the ones who believe on him.

1535. Because a lot of people in the crowd,

1536. just the average people in the crowd,

1537. they do believe in Jesus when they hear this preaching.

1538. And so he says to those Jews which believed on him,

1539. if you continue in my word,

1540. then are you my disciples indeed

1541. and you shall know the truth

1542. and the truth shall make you free, right?

1543. So he's saying, look, it's great that you believe on me.

1544. Obviously, virtually all of us in here believe on Jesus Christ.

1545. That's the beginning of our Christian life

1546. believing in Jesus, getting saved.

1547. But after we get saved,

1548. we wanna continue on to become disciples of Jesus.

  1549. We wanna follow Jesus.

1550. We wanna be studying the Bible, going to church,

1551. preaching the gospel, following the commandments,

1552. living right, now look, in order to get to heaven,

1553. you only have to do one thing and one thing alone

1554. that is believe on the Lord Jesus Christ

1555. and thou shall be saved.

1556. Whosoever believe in him should not perish

  1557. but have eternal life.

1558. But here's the thing, in order to be a disciple of Jesus though,

1559. you gotta take up the cross daily and follow him.

  1560. Not every saved person's a disciple.

1561. How many disciples did Jesus have?

  1562. 12 disciples, right?

1563. Later, he has more disciples,

1564. but even after three and a half years of ministry

1565. in the early church in Acts chapter one,

1566. there's only 120 people that are really disciples,

  1567. that are really die-hards,

1568. that are really following Jesus.

  1569. It's not a huge number.

1570. But the Bible says thousands of people

  1571. got saved and baptized.

1572. So you have thousands and thousands and thousands

1573. of people getting saved and baptized,

1574. but the church is only running 120 in Acts chapter one.

1575. You've got all kinds of people

1576. hearing Christ preaching and believing in him,

1577. but you got 12 disciples.

1578. Later, you have maybe 70 other apostles

1579. being ordained and so forth.

1580. So he's saying, look, if you continue in my word,

1581. then you're really my disciples,

  1582. you're my indeed disciple.

1583. He says, and you'll know the truth

1584. and the truth will make you free.

1585. The more you know the truth of God's word,

1586. the more liberty you're gonna have, right?

1587. The more freedom you're gonna have.

  1588. Why?

1589. Because sin brings bondage into our life.

1590. Sin drags us down and enslaves us into addictions

1591. of drugs, alcohol, pornography, gambling, whatever.

1592. But this is where people get confused.

1593. He says to the ones who believe on him,

1594. if you continue in my word,

1595. and then it says, they answered him,

  1596. we be Abraham seed.

1597. These people that are answering him

  1598. are the hecklers again,

1599. not the actual good saved people in the crowd that believe.

1600. And that's why pronouns can sometimes be confusing

1601. in the Bible of what they're referring to,

1602. but it's obvious if you read this

1603. that they here are the bad guys again

1604. because they're denying Christ in the coming verses,

1605. and he's ultimately just gonna tell them,

1606. you guys are of your father, the devil,

1607. you guys are of Satan,

  1608. he's a liar from the beginning,

1609. and you all are just like him.

1610. So obviously we're not talking to the believers.

1611. Does everybody understand what I'm saying?

1612. People would try to twist this like,

1613. oh, well he's telling people to believe in him

1614. that they're of the devil.

1615. You know, you just have to understand

1616. that sometimes the Bible will switch pronouns,

1617. deal with it, it's real, it's life.

1618. You can prove it in many places.

1619. Says they answered him, we be Abraham seed,

1620. and we were never in bondage to any man.

1621. Now is that true that Abraham seed

1622. was never in bondage to any man?

1623. Because I thought that the children of Israel

1624. were in bondage in Egypt for 400 years.

1625. So you notice how these people,

  1626. they're not reliable, they're not trustworthy,

1627. they're not being faithful to the word of God,

1628. they're not true witnesses, they're full of baloney.

1629. Everything they say is baloney.

1630. We were never in bondage to any man.

  1631. We're Abraham seed.

1632. Yeah, Abraham seed went to Egypt

1633. for 400 years as bond servants.

1634. Jesus answered, them verily, verily I say unto you,

1635. whosoever committed sin is the servant of sin.

1636. And the servant abided not in the house forever,

1637. but the son abided forever.

1638. If the son therefore shall make you free,

1639. you shall be free indeed.

  1640. I know that you're Abraham seed,

1641. but you seek to kill me

1642. because my word has no place in you.

1643. I speak that which I've seen with my father

1644. and you do that which you've seen with your father

1645. and ultimately he tells them, your father is the devil.

1646. He's clearly talking to the hecklers, the Pharisees,

1647. when he says, you guys are trying to kill me.

1648. He's not talking to the ones who believe in him.

1649. The ones who believed in him, he's trying to encourage them.

1650. You know what I see here,

1651. and I'm gonna close on this thought.

1652. What I see here is Jesus

1653. is constantly trying to preach to the good people.

1654. He's trying to edify sincere people.

1655. He's telling them, hey man, I'm the light of the world.

1656. If you follow me, you'll have the light of life.

1657. And then the Pharisees are constantly jumping in

1658. and basically turning it into an argument,

1659. turning it into a fight, heckling him

1660. and trying to drag him into all these other conversations.

  1661. Do you notice that?

1662. You know, he's like, hey guys,

1663. if you continue in my word, you're my disciples indeed.

1664. You know the truth, the truth.

1665. And then just some bozo,

1666. well actually we were never in bondage city, man.

  1667. What do you mean?

1668. It's like, shut up, bro.

1669. I'm not even talking to you.

1670. But here's the thing, what you do see though,

1671. is you do see that when these hecklers are piping up

1672. with these false doctrines, lies,

1673. railing on Jesus, false accusations,

1674. you know, Jesus does respond to them

1675. and he does spend time refuting them

1676. because it becomes a teaching opportunity for everyone.

1677. So here's the thing, I kind of feel the same way

1678. as a pastor in my ministry too.

1679. You know, my desire is to get up

1680. and preach to people that want to hear the truth.

1681. I'm not interested in preaching to hecklers and railers

1682. and all the critics and all the haters

1683. and all the people that are just here

1684. to tear me down or something like that.

1685. You know, I'm interested in preaching to good people

1686. who love truth, who want to learn the Bible,

1687. who want to do right.

1688. Like that's who we enjoy preaching.

1689. When we go soul winning, that's who we're looking for.

1690. Sincere people who want to hear the truth.

1691. When I'm up here preaching, you know,

1692. I'm preaching to the choir.

1693. I'm preaching to the saved.

1694. You know, I'm preaching to the good people

1695. that want to hear it, right?

1696. But here's the thing, the haters are listening too.

1697. The wicked are listening too.

1698. And they will try to gain say and dispute

1699. and try to fight truth, you know?

1700. And it's obviously we want to preach to the receptive,

1701. but then the gain sayer comes along and argues

  1702. and here's the thing,

1703. rebuking the gain sayer is profitable.

1704. Otherwise Jesus wouldn't be doing it.

1705. Cause Jesus could just be like,

1706. all right guys, I'm not talking to you.

1707. All right, back to those of you that believe on me.

1708. He does take the time to refute them

  1709. because there's the thing.

1710. If I get up here and refute liars and refute railers

  1711. and refute false religion

1712. and I get up here and refute the Roman Catholic church,

1713. refute Mormonism, refute Buddhism, refute Hinduism,

1714. refute the Mormons and the JFWs

1715. and the Seventh-day Adventists and whatever.

1716. If I get up and rebuke those things,

  1717. it's a teachable moment for everyone.

1718. Like even though Jesus is trying to teach positive things

  1719. over and over again

1720. and then they keep getting him on the negative stuff,

1721. he takes the bait and he goes off on the negative stuff.

1722. He goes off on the synagogue of Satan.

1723. He tells them they're of their father the devil

  1724. and you know what?

1725. I don't know about you, but I like all those verses.

1726. I'm glad Jesus argues with them.

1727. I'm glad Jesus straightens them out.

1728. I'm glad that Jesus proves his point.

1729. I'm glad that he shuts down their false accusations.

1730. I'm glad that he points out that they're of the devil

1731. and that they're gonna die in their sins

1732. cause it ends up just being good preaching.

1733. And so yeah, pastors, we wanna preach positive stuff.

  1734. We're like Jude.

1735. Hey, I wanna write to you about the common salvation,

  1736. but you know what?

1737. We gotta contend for the faith, so let's go.

1738. And then Jude ends up being a book of super hard preaching

1739. cause he says, hey, I wanted to preach something nice,

1740. but there's too much garbage out there that needs rebuke.

  1741. So here we go.

1742. So don't ever get frustrated with hard preaching

1743. against sin, hard preaching against railers and enemies

  1744. because you know what?

1745. As long as we're learning the Bible,

  1746. that's all that matters.

1747. Sometimes current events, sometimes battles,

1748. sometimes rebuking a false religion,

1749. can just give us like a vehicle for learning the Bible.

1750. We had a controversy in our church about nine years ago

1751. where there were certain evil people crept in unawares

  1752. that denied the Trinity.

1753. Now this is a tragedy.

  1754. This is not fun.

1755. I didn't wake up that morning and go swim laps

1756. down at the Salvation Army and come out

1757. and my wife picked me up and told me,

1758. oh, by the way, you know,

1759. one of your employees is denying the Trinity.

  1760. You know what?

  1761. That wasn't a fun thing.

  1762. That wasn't like, yes.

  1763. That was a tragedy.

  1764. That was horrible.

  1765. That was upsetting.

  1766. This was uncomfortable.

  1767. This was discouraging.

1768. This was, you know, embarrassing.

1769. This was horrible, but here's the thing.

1770. But looking back, it's like, well, yeah, but man,

1771. we were really able to really tighten things up

1772. on the Trinity and preach a bunch of sermons

1773. on the Trinity and everybody got super solid on the Trinity.

1774. So at the end of the day, is it really a bad thing?

1775. If a bunch of important preaching comes out of it,

  1776. you know, it's a good thing.

1777. And so again, the title of the sermon tonight is,

1778. Jesus is the faithful and true witness.

  1779. He's reliable.

  1780. He's trustworthy.

  1781. He's telling the truth.

  1782. He's right.

1783. It's in accordance with the Bible.

  1784. And you know what?

  1785. False witness abounds.

  1786. Liars abound.

1787. You know, we want to be like Jesus.

1788. We want to be faithful and true witnesses.

1789. We want to testify truth.

1790. We want to talk in accordance with the Bible

1791. and we want to talk in accordance with reality

1792. and not make up stories.

  1793. And you know what?

1794. People who make up stories all the time

1795. and lie all the time, you know what?

1796. That's a horrible attribute and shame on you

  1797. if that's you.

  1798. Because you know what?

1799. I bet you that there are a bunch of people

1800. in this room even that are habitual liars.

  1801. Why?

1802. Because that's just human nature.

  1803. I'm not accusing anybody.

1804. I'm not thinking of anyone in particular.

1805. I'm just saying in a crowd this size,

1806. it's probably a bunch of habitual liars.

1807. There could be little kids, teenagers,

1808. just in the habit of lying.

1809. Adults in the habit of lying.

  1810. You know what?

  1811. That's a rotten attribute to have.

1812. Love, truth and your personal life.

1813. Don't go around lying to people and telling tall tales.

1814. You know, my dad used to joke around

  1815. because you'd say something

1816. and then someone would always one up you.

1817. Have you ever known these people?

1818. Like I remember we were talking about knee boarding

1819. behind a boat and my uncle asked me,

1820. how many 360s did you do behind the boat?

1821. And in one shot I said 15, he said I did 16.

1822. And basically my dad would always,

1823. whenever someone would one up him like that,

1824. when he would say a number and then the person would come in,

1825. oh, and it was always more,

1826. he would say this joke,

1827. oh the first liar never stands a chance.

1828. Joking that they were both lying.

1829. But he would say, oh the first liar never stands a chance.

1830. It was just a joke though.

1831. But have you known people who are always telling tall tales?

1832. Always exaggerating and often they're the hero

1833. of these stories that are super exaggerated tall tales

1834. and they tell you about all their feats

1835. behind the wheel of the car

1836. and they tell you about all their feats

  1837. in sports and everything

1838. and it's just kind of like bro,

1839. this is so unrealistic, this is so exaggerated.

  1840. That's a scary attribute when you're constantly lying,

  1841. constantly exaggerating.

  1842. Be a truth teller.

  1843. Don't be that guy.

1844. And look there are people, relatives that we had

1845. that were like that and people would just tell you,

1846. don't believe anything this person says.

1847. There was this guy, Uncle Patterson.

1848. And this guy's been dead for like 30 or 40 years

1849. so I don't think he'll mind me using him in the sermon

1850. but he's been dead for like literally 30 or 40 years.

1851. But this guy Pat Patterson would just tell all these lies

1852. and it just became known as,

1853. oh it was a, we would say it's a Pat Patterson type story.

1854. So if anyone told us a weird story,

1855. it was a Pat Patterson type story.

1856. You can tell the guy's Irish or whatever, it sounds like it.

1857. Bro kissed the Blarney Stone.

1858. But this guy, he would tell all these wild stories

1859. about how, oh I was going up this ladder

1860. and I was carrying four 100 pound bags of concrete

1861. while I was climbing the ladder

1862. and you're just like, bro, no.

  1863. That didn't happen, it's just annoying.

1864. You know, he told this story about how he got mugged

1865. and this guy stabbed him in the side of the head

1866. and blood was just shooting out of the side of his head

1867. 10 feet while he fought the guy off.

1868. He ended up fighting the guy,

1869. carrying the guy to the police station

1870. and while he was carrying the police station,

1871. blood was shooting out the side of his head 10 feet.

1872. And it's just like, so one time my grandfather

1873. got so angry at Pat Patterson.

1874. He was just sick of it.

1875. Because it's knowing when people just lie to you

1876. and tell these lies to you.

1877. He got so mad that he basically told Pat Patterson,

1878. I'm gonna kick your butt, let's go outside right now.

1879. You're telling all these stories about how tough you are

1880. and you're just beating everybody up in every story.

1881. You're just doing all this kung fu

1882. and blood shooting out the side of your head.

1883. Come out in my driveway right now

1884. and I'm gonna beat the living crap out of you

1885. and we'll see if your stories are true.

1886. Because obviously this wasn't right.

1887. My grandpa was unsaved at the time

1888. and so it's totally the flesh talking.

1889. And he said, you come out in the driveway

1890. and I'm gonna beat the living whatever out of you.

1891. Because he just finally just couldn't take it anymore.

1892. So he's out in the driveway waiting for Pat Patterson

1893. to come out and face him.

  1894. Pat doesn't show up.

1895. He goes back into the house

1896. and all the ladies in the family

1897. are all surrounding Pat as he's on the floor

  1898. because he's had a heart attack.

1899. So Bro was saved by the bell.

1900. He had a heart attack.

1901. How many of you think that he actually

1902. really had a heart attack?

1903. And this guy, he was telling stories.

1904. He told a story about how he was sitting in a diner

1905. or a coffee shop and he overheard two cops next to him

1906. describing his car about how he's constantly driving

  1907. down I-5 at 120, 130 miles an hour.

1908. And now they were talking to each other.

1909. Oh, don't even try to catch that guy.

  1910. You'll never catch him.

1911. He's too fast for us.

1912. We just let him go because it's impossible to catch him.

1913. He also told the story that he was pulled over by the police

1914. just so that the police could tell him

1915. that he was the best driver that they'd ever seen

1916. and that he was checking his mirror exactly

1917. every 11 seconds as the handbook recommends.

1918. And I mean, I could go on and on.

1919. I mean, this is, Bro's burning in hell, man.

1920. I'm just telling you, like, it's wicked.

1921. Okay, all liars shall have their part.

1922. Now, obviously, if he believed in Jesus Christ, he'd be saved,

1923. but he didn't, so he's in hell.

1924. Okay, so again, he doesn't mind me telling the story.

1925. All right, I'm out of time.

1926. Let's bards in order of prayer.

1927. Father, thank you so much for your word, Lord.

1928. Thank you for a faithful and true witness

1929. that we have in Jesus Christ.

1930. Thank you for the faithful and true witness

1931. of the word of God.

1932. Thank you so much, Lord, for Christians who love truth

1933. and tell the truth and are honest, Lord.

1934. Help us to remember that honesty is the best policy.

1935. And Lord, help us not to become a Pat Patterson,

1936. telling all kinds of stupid wild stories

  1937. and insulting people's intelligence

1938. by telling outrageously tall tales.

1939. Lord God, help us not to be deceived

1940. by the liars of this world,

1941. because as Brother Segura mentioned in his sermon

  1942. on Wednesday night,

1943. being deceived is you're in the transgression

  1944. when you're being deceived.

1945. And so help us not to be deceived.

1946. Help us to be lovers of truth and believers of truth.

1947. And in Jesus' name we pray amen.

  1948. Amen.
