  1. Man, this evening I'm preaching on the subject of financial greed and usury, financial greed

  2. and usury.

  3. And in this chapter, Nehemiah chapter 5, just to give you kind of the historical context,

    Nehemiah 5 chapter mention

  4. if you remember the nation of Judah had gone into captivity in Babylon and now God has

  5. brought them back from the Babylonian captivity.

  6. They're re-establishing their nation, rebuilding Jerusalem, rebuilding the temple, rebuilding

  7. the wall around the city and just, you know, they're getting back and getting established.

  8. But unfortunately, there are people that are just kind of taking advantage of the situation

  9. and instead of trying to help God's people succeed and thrive and be a successful nation,

  10. instead they want to just try to just be greedy and get as much money out of people

  11. as they can and just be lending money to people on interest, predatory lending, etc.

  12. And what you have to understand is that when the Bible used the term usury, it really just

  13. means charging interest no matter what the interest rate is, okay?

  14. Because in our modern vernacular, when we use the word usury in 2026 or laws that have

  15. to do with usury, they prohibit people from charging really high interest rates.

  16. Like usually it will cap it at like 30 percent, you know, just these insane interest rates.

  17. So you'll see credit cards that are charging like 29.99 percent APR compounded, you know,

  18. every split second and literally that's not a joke.

  19. You know, it's just continuously compounding interest.

  20. And you know, the point is that God actually is telling his people not to charge usury period

  21. and he just means don't charge interest.

  22. But now we have this changing of the definition of well, just don't charge 30 percent.

  23. But what you're going to see in this passage, the usury that Nehemiah is upset about is

  24. literally 1 percent interest and Nehemiah is rebuking it.

  25. And so this is not a legitimate way to make money.

  26. And look, all throughout the Bible, what is God teaching us?

  27. Work hard, go out and give it your best at your job, whether you're working for yourself

  28. or whether you're working for somebody else.

  29. Whatsoever thy hand find it to do, do with thy might, work hard, make an honest living

  30. and have enough money to take care of yourself, take care of your family.

  31. And hopefully to be able to help out other people that are in need,

  32. the opposite of that is getting greedy and just wanting more and more money and never having enough.

  33. What does the Bible say?

  34. The love of money is the root of all evil.

  35. Now, here's the thing.

  36. I'm not, I'm going to try not to get super political in the sermon.

  37. That's not really the point.

  38. And I don't want to get super duper economical either because I want to preach through the chapter.

  39. But obviously there are different schools of thought when it comes to government

  40. and when it comes to finances.

  41. And so, you know, we'll typically just in a very vague way talk about like liberals and conservatives, right?

  42. And in our modern day, typically when we think of quote unquote liberals,

  43. we're talking about basically people who want to tax us all

  44. and then give the money away and kind of spread the wealth around,

  45. tax the rich to give money to the poor.

  46. And obviously there are tons of abuses of this where you have all kinds of people

  47. that are just lazy and not working and they're just on welfare and they're just getting free money

  48. and whatever.

  49. And typically the liberals want to have like lots of government spending

  50. and social programs and just have the government provide education for every single person,

  51. health care for every single person.

  52. You know, just even how about just giving everybody money?

  53. Like a lot of people just want a standard basic income just for everyone.

  54. Just pay everyone money to do nothing and whatever.

  55. Okay. Now, obviously unfortunately the conservative side is pretty much into big spending too.

  56. They just like to spend on different things and whatever.

  57. Then there's a more like libertarian mindset

  58. or like kind of like a Ron Paul Republican type mindset

  59. that is basically saying, hey, we need to cut spending, limit government spending.

  60. People need to work and do things for themselves.

  61. The government can't provide everything for everyone.

  62. We can't just pay for everybody's health care,

  63. pay for everybody's education, pay for everybody's housing.

  64. You know, people have to go and work and earn it themselves.

  65. You know, so on the one hand you have kind of this big government socialist view.

  66. And then on the other hand you have this more like libertarian free market economics kind of a view.

  67. Obviously the libertarian free market side is the correct side here, okay?

  68. But here's what's funny is that some people will kind of go too far on that side.

  69. And I remember when I was a teenager in high school in an economics class

  70. and you know the spirit of what we were being taught about like free market economics

  71. and capitalism and everything like that, was true.

  72. But then they showed us a video about how greed was good.

  73. And how like actually it was just outright just saying greed is good.

  74. And this was like kind of an opposite extreme from these kind of left-wing socialists

  75. saying, oh no, no, no, capitalism and free market.

  76. And also it's good to be greedy.

  77. And these greedy billionaires are actually helping society and it's great, whatever.

  78. And that was kind of like a weird over-correction or like another opposite extreme.

  79. So what I want to do is kind of go to the word of God and see what the Bible says.

  80. Because here's the thing, the word liberal comes from the same root as like liberty.

  81. And the whole point of being liberal means you're being generous, okay?

  82. So in my personal life I want to be a liberal, right?

  83. Because I want to be generous.

  84. I want to be very free with my money and not be like a tightwad, stingy guy.

  85. I want to be liberal.

  86. I want to help other people.

  87. You know, I want to help people out and give and be generous.

  88. That's what it should mean to be liberal.

  89. The problem with modern so-called liberalism though is that basically

  90. they want to be liberal with other people's money.

  91. So they want to tax us all and then be liberal with the money and just give it away freely.

  92. And the problem is that they have sticky fingers along the way.

  93. So a lot of it gets just wasted in government waste and government corruption.

  94. And that's why we're $40 trillion in debt and whatever.

  95. So anyway, I'm just kind of talking about this.

  96. Just kind of give a basic foundation for what we're talking about here

  97. when we look at Nehemiah chapter five, okay?

  98. There are a lot of things that are wrong with our society.

  99. Greed is not the answer.

  100. Socialism is also not the answer.

  101. The right answer is that people should have the freedom and the ability

  102. to make as much money as they want and to become millionaires and billionaires

  103. if they can and just, you know, make money and have businesses and work hard.

  104. But that we should, out of our own good conscience and our good heart toward God,

  105. we should want to be generous and giving and not be greedy.

  106. And if you're going to get rich, it should only be through real legitimate work,

  107. not unjust gain and predatory lending and ripping people off, okay?

  108. Now remember, the Bible says the love of money is the root of all evil.

  109. And the Bible says, but they that will be rich will means want to be.

  110. They that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare

  111. and into many foolish and hurtful lusts which drown man in destruction and perdition.

  112. So the Bible is warning you, if you're this person who's just like,

  113. my goal in life is to be rich, that's a bad goal.

  114. And you're probably going to go down a very dark path

  115. because the love of money is the root of all evil.

  116. However, if you're just working hard, building a business,

  117. and you happen to be successful, you happen to make a tons of money,

  118. you happen to make millions of dollars or something, great.

  119. But what do you do at that point?

  120. You're supposed to be generous and liberal with your money,

  121. not that the government is going to steal your money

  122. and give it to someone else,

  123. but rather that you would have your own volition be generous with your money.

  124. Let's see what the Bible says about this,

  125. now that we've kind of thrown around some terms a little bit.

  126. Look at Nehemiah chapter 5, verse 1, it says,

    Nehemiah 5:1

  127. There was a great cry of the people and of their wives

  128. against their brethren, the Jews.

  129. For there were that said,

  130. We are sons and our daughters are many,

  131. therefore we take up corn for them that we may eat and live.

  132. Some also there were that said,

  133. We have mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses

  134. that we might buy corn because of the dirt.

  135. So they're in a bad situation here

  136. because the Jews are trying to get reestablished in Jerusalem

  137. and there's a famine, there's a dirt.

  138. The economy is not doing well,

  139. it would be the modern analog of this.

  140. And so therefore they're having trouble just feeding their families.

  141. They're having trouble putting food on the table.

  142. And so they're saying we're having to go into debt,

  143. we're having to mortgage our lands, vineyards, and houses

  144. so that we can just buy corn to eat.

  145. I mean this would be like if you're taking a second mortgage on your house

  146. just so you can buy groceries,

  147. you know, just so that you can actually

  148. put gas on the tank and keep going.

  149. So this means you're deficit spending

  150. and it's because of a dearth or a famine.

  151. And the thing is it says in verse number one

  152. that there's a cry of the people and of their wives

  153. against their brother and the Jews.

  154. So this is Jews oppressing Jews.

  155. So this isn't some foreign government that's taxing them

  156. and oppressing them.

  157. This is Jews oppressing each other, right?

  158. And this is obviously wicked.

  159. It's not right.

  160. It's ungodly to treat people this way.

  161. You've got the Jews that are more wealthy

  162. and they're abusing and taking advantage of the poorer Jews

  163. by lending to them on interest,

  164. making them mortgage things and so forth and ripping them off.

  165. So they're complaining about it.

  166. And it says in verse number four,

  167. there were also that said we've borrowed money

  168. for the king's tribute and that upon our land's invaders.

  169. So, you know, they're having to pay their taxes

  170. on a credit card, right?

  171. And so, you know, they're being taxed

  172. and they're being charged a bunch of bank fees

  173. and interest.

  174. And so instead of just working

  175. and putting food on the table,

  176. they're getting gouged by these financial predators,

  177. government taxing them to death, banks ripping them off,

  178. charging them a bunch of interest and fees and so forth.

  179. Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brother in verse five,

  180. our children as their children and lo,

  181. we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants

  182. and some of our daughters are brought under bondage already.

  183. Neither is it in our power to redeem them

  184. for other men have our lands and vineyards.

  185. They're saying, look, we literally are selling

  186. our children into bondage,

  187. selling our children into literal slavery

  188. just because we can't afford to feed them.

  189. We can't afford to take care of them

  190. and we need the money just to pay our bills

  191. and to pay the taxes and pay the mortgage, etc.

  192. And so this is a horrible financial situation that they're in.

  193. So it says right here, inverse number,

  194. I lost my page here.

  195. It says in verse number six,

  196. and I was very angry when I heard their cry

  197. and these words.

  198. And so, you know, this makes Nehemiah mad.

  199. And a lot of people, I feel like,

  200. are frustrated when they see, you know,

  201. a situation where banks and governments

  202. are stealing money from people

  203. and then ordinary people are struggling to get by,

  204. struggling to pay their bills.

  205. Everybody's in debt up to their eyeballs

  206. and just trying to make ends meet and get by.

  207. And so Nehemiah is upset when he hears about this

  208. and he's especially upset to hear that Jews

  209. are doing this to other Jews.

  210. Like instead of them sticking together as God's people

  211. and saying, hey, I want all of us to prosper.

  212. We want to succeed as a nation.

  213. It's like, no, let me just personally succeed

  214. at the expense of others.

  215. So he says he was very angry when he heard these words

  216. and then look at verse seven.

  217. Then I consulted with myself

  218. and I rebuked the nobles and the rulers

  219. and said unto them,

  220. ye exact usury, every one of his brother

  221. and I set a great assembly against them

  222. and I said to them, we after our ability

  223. have redeemed our brethren, the Jews,

  224. which were sold unto the heathen.

  225. Because remember, they've gone into captivity in Babylon.

  226. They've been slaves in Babylon and other countries.

  227. They've been buying people's freedom

  228. and trying to bring them back to the promised land,

  229. getting people out of Babylon and these other places,

  230. only to get there and be enslaved

  231. by other Jews when they get there.

  232. And they're going back into bondage.

  233. Their children are going back into bondage.

  234. The whole point is we're coming out of the Babylonian captivity

  235. and then you're bringing us back into bondage.

  236. And so it says, will you even sell your brethren?

  237. Verse eight, halfway through,

  238. or shall they be sold unto us?

  239. Then held their peace and found nothing to answer.

  240. So they're ashamed.

  241. Nehemiah is rebuking them

  242. and they're embarrassed and ashamed

  243. that they're putting their own greed

  244. over the benefit and well-being of the people around them.

  245. And so it says in verse nine,

  246. also I said, it's not good that ye do,

  247. ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God

  248. because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies.

  249. I likewise, and my brethren and my servants,

  250. might exact of them money and corn.

  251. He's saying, I can do the same thing.

  252. I'm wealthy.

  253. I could loan them money at interest

  254. and rip them off and steal from them.

  255. He says, I pray you, let us leave off this usury.

  256. We got to stop this.

  257. Verse 11, restore, I pray you to them,

  258. even this day their lands, their vineyards,

  259. their olive yards and their houses,

  260. also the hundredth part of the money.

  261. That's the 1% interest rate that I was talking about.

  262. And of the corn, the wine and the oil that ye exact of them,

  263. then said they, we will restore them

  264. and we will require nothing of them.

  265. So what we do is thou sayest,

  266. then I called the priests and took an oath of them

  267. that they should do according to this promise.

  268. Also, I shook my lap and said,

  269. so God shake out every man from his house

  270. and from his labor that performeth not this promise,

  271. even thus be he shaken out and emptied.

  272. And all the congregation said, amen and praise the Lord,

  273. the people did according to this promise.

  274. So Nehemiah is saying, look, you got to stop this.

  275. You're ripping people off.

  276. You're hurting people.

  277. You're being greedy.

  278. You're oppressing the poor.

  279. You're taxing the poor.

  280. You're charging interest to the poor and ripping them off.

  281. And so the problem here is greed.

  282. The people that are oppressing their brethren

  283. are already wealthy people.

  284. They're already doing well.

  285. They have money.

  286. The problem is it's not enough for them.

  287. And the problem is that the Bible says,

  288. he that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver.

  289. You know, nobody's ever going to have enough money

  290. where they're like, okay, now I'm satisfied.

  291. I've arrived.

  292. I'm happy now.

  293. Money doesn't make you happy.

  294. And so living a life chasing money

  295. is a bad way to live your life.

  296. And it's going to lead you down a dark path

  297. because you're just going to keep wanting more and more

  298. and you'll do anything to get it

  299. and you'll become a greedy person.

  300. Now, I think that this is a big part of human nature

  301. in general is greed and not just about money.

  302. But you know, people are greedy of money.

  303. People are greedy of food, right?

  304. They eat too much and get super overweight

  305. because they're just greedy.

  306. It's like, well, this food's good.

  307. So I'm just going to keep eating it.

  308. This is so good.

  309. And they overindulge, right?

  310. People overindulge.

  311. Now, obviously, I don't believe that we should drink alcohol

  312. at all whatsoever.

  313. But yet, even people who do think, hey,

  314. it's okay to drink a little bit, you know what?

  315. They tend to overindulge.

  316. And then you have people binge drinking

  317. and getting drunk and, you know,

  318. becoming alcoholics and everything.

  319. Just showing the greedy nature of man

  320. that he's probably not just going to drink

  321. a little bit of alcohol, right?

  322. They're going to drink another one and another one and another one.

  323. And then it's got to be every day

  324. and then whatever road they go down is an alcoholic.

  325. Drug addicts, same thing, you know?

  326. Gambling addiction, you know?

  327. People are just greedy, right?

  328. I mean, what does God prescribe for us as men?

  329. A wife, right?

  330. We're supposed to be married

  331. and we are supposed to be the two of us,

  332. one flesh, husband and wife.

  333. But then throughout the Bible,

  334. what do we see?

  335. Men who are being greedy and just multiplying wives,

  336. you know?

  337. We see a guy like King Rehoboam

  338. who has dozens and dozens of wives

  339. and then it just says he just wants more wives.

  340. He just desired many wives.

  341. It's like, bro, you already have many wives.

  342. How are you desiring many wives?

  343. You already have scores of wives,

  344. but he just wants more, more, more, more, more.

  345. This is human nature.

  346. And we need to make sure that as Christians,

  347. we don't fall into this trap of being greedy

  348. of anything, you know?

  349. We need to understand, hey, the money that I make at my job,

  350. making an honest living, working hard,

  351. being productive, producing value,

  352. that's got to be enough for me.

  353. It's like John the Baptist preached to the soldiers,

  354. be content with your wages.

  355. Don't go steal and take things that don't belong to you.

  356. He told the publicans, don't exact more

  357. than you're supposed to be exacting

  358. because they're ripping people off.

  359. Instead of just being content with their paycheck,

  360. they have to be stealing as well

  361. because they're being greedy.

  362. We need to be content with the money

  363. that we make at our legitimate job

  364. and not be trying to do something greedy

  365. or unjust on the side.

  366. See, there are legitimate ways

  367. to make money in this world

  368. and there are illegitimate ways to make money, right?

  369. I mean, if you go to your job and work, that's great.

  370. But you know what?

  371. Here are bad ways to make money, selling drugs, right?

  372. This is an illegitimate way to make money.

  373. You're hurting people.

  374. You're destroying people's lives

  375. so that you can make money, okay?

  376. You're also risking obviously going to prison

  377. and having all those consequences

  378. of breaking the law and selling illicit drugs.

  379. But you know what?

  380. People get into this all the time

  381. and they get into things like selling drugs.

  382. They get into just pyramid schemes

  383. and just get rich quick schemes

  384. and they get into just ripping people off

  385. and unjust gain because of greed, okay?

  386. We need to just understand,

  387. hey, let's enjoy the amount of food that we should,

  388. let's enjoy the amount of money that God has given us,

  389. let's enjoy the one wife that God has given us

  390. and not be greedy like,

  391. oh, I have to have a second wife,

  392. third wife, fourth wife,

  393. or I have to have the side piece,

  394. the concubine or whatever,

  395. or go out and cheat on my spouse or whatever.

  396. Hey, be content with what you got.

  397. The opposite of contentment is greed.

  398. And so human nature is greedy.

  399. So these people,

  400. they're already the wealthy stratum of society

  401. here in Nehemiah 5,

  402. but what are they doing?

  403. They're looking at poor people

  404. who are barely struggling to even get by

  405. and they're saying,

  406. let's charge them interest.

  407. Let's make them pay us rent.

  408. Let's get them to mortgage their houses to us

  409. and get them paying rent to us every month

  410. on property that's already theirs

  411. that they already owned and so forth.

  412. And you know, it's just evil.

  413. You know, and so again,

  414. like I'm not trying to be super political

  415. or anything when I talk about this,

  416. but at the end of the day,

  417. there are people out there who are greedy people

  418. who want to take money away from hardworking people

  419. so that they can lie in their own pockets with it.

  420. They pretend that they're giving it to the poor,

  421. like Judas Iscariot,

  422. but really most of it is sticking to their fingers

  423. and a little bit of it makes it to the poor,

  424. but most of it is being used up in the process.

  425. And by the way,

  426. also what we call sometimes poor people

  427. are just lazy people refusing to work.

  428. Now look, I understand there are some people

  429. who are legitimately the poor,

  430. but there's a difference between being poor

  431. and you want to work,

  432. you're doing the best work you can,

  433. you're doing what you can,

  434. and you're a working poor.

  435. And then there's people who are just career

  436. welfare recipients,

  437. career derelicts milking the system.

  438. And so, you know,

  439. I do believe that the Bible is teaching us here

  440. that generosity is good.

  441. Being liberal with your own goods is good.

  442. That's what we're going to see Nehemiah do in just a moment.

  443. And I do think that it is wrong

  444. to go through life just being greedy

  445. and getting as much as you can from other people.

  446. People who've been blessed with money,

  447. if you're well off,

  448. you should be generous.

  449. Nobody should necessarily be forcing you

  450. at the barrel of a gun to give your money to the poor,

  451. but you should want to out of the goodness of your heart

  452. and because of your Christian character

  453. want to help out others and those in need.

  454. So let's see what the Bible says about greed.

  455. Go, if you would, to Proverbs chapter one.

  456. We're going to look at like almost every mention of greed.

  457. We're going to look at every relevant mention of greed

  458. in the Bible and see what the Bible has to say

  459. about being greedy because

  460. I think that's the problem in Nehemiah 5

  461. is just rich people being greedy

  462. and they're just trying to just squeeze

  463. every penny that they can out of poor people.

  464. Instead of being generous and saying,

  465. hey, let's help out the poor.

  466. And Nehemiah is not saying,

  467. give all your money to poor people.

  468. That's not what Nehemiah is even saying.

  469. Nehemiah is literally just saying,

  470. just stop ripping them off.

  471. Stop stealing their money.

  472. Stop charging them interest and charging them rent

  473. and charging them fees.

  474. Just let them keep their own produce of their own labor.

  475. That's all he's saying.

  476. And then the next step though

  477. would be that out of the goodness of their heart

  478. they should want to be helping out their brethren

  479. and actually giving and being generous and so forth.

  480. But look what the Bible says in Proverbs chapter 1 verse 19.

    Proverbs 1:19

  481. It says, so are the ways of everyone that is greedy of gain

  482. which take away the life of the owners thereof.

  483. So, you know, the Bible is talking about people here

  484. being greedy of gain to the point

  485. where they're willing to kill people

  486. in order to get what belongs to them.

  487. Kill people to get the inheritance.

  488. Kill people to steal their money or whatever.

  489. Look at chapter 15 of Proverbs.

    Proverbs 15 chapter mention

  490. Chapter 15, while you're turning there,

  491. I'm going to read for you from Isaiah chapter 56.

    Isaiah 56 chapter mention

  492. The Bible says in Isaiah 56-10 is,

  493. Watchmen are blind, they're all ignorant,

  494. they're all dumb dogs, they cannot bark,

  495. sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber.

  496. Yay, there are greedy dogs.

  497. Listen to this, there are greedy dogs

  498. which can never have enough

  499. and they are shepherds that cannot understand

  500. they all look to their own way,

  501. everyone for his gain from his quarter.

  502. So, the Bible is saying these greedy dogs,

  503. they just only are just thinking about themselves

  504. and how they can just amass more and more for themselves

  505. and they're wicked, they're dogs, etc.

  506. Look at Proverbs 15, 27.

  507. It says, he that is greedy of gain

  508. troubleth his own house,

  509. but he that hated gifts shall live.

  510. Now, when the Bible talks about hating gifts here,

  511. this isn't saying that your name is Ebenezer Scrooge

  512. or something and you just don't want to get

  513. a Christmas present

  514. and you don't want people to give you a birthday present.

  515. That's not what this means.

  516. When the Bible talks about taking a gift

  517. in Proverbs or receiving the gift,

  518. usually what it's talking about is bribery.

  519. So, the idea here is you're a judge

  520. or a public official or an authority figure of some time

  521. and someone is giving you gifts

  522. bribing you to do evil.

  523. Now, here's the problem with our government

  524. is that many people in government are being bribed to do evil.

  525. They love gifts

  526. and the way that this is referred to in Washington DC

  527. it's not called gifts, it's called lobbying.

  528. And these lobbyists will take these politicians out

  529. and whine them and dine them and give them gifts

  530. and then these guys will,

  531. instead of doing what's right for the American people,

  532. they're going to pass legislation that's going to help

  533. these certain wealthy businessmen

  534. or whatever the special interest

  535. that is paying them through gifts and whining and dining.

  536. Another way that they will bribe public officials

  537. is they can give them insider information

  538. and they can do insider stock trading

  539. and make money at the expense of other people,

  540. hurting other people, you know,

  541. because for everybody who's a winner in the stock market

  542. there's going to be losers

  543. and so these people are cheating,

  544. getting inside information

  545. and making money at the expense

  546. of other people's retirement accounts or whatever.

  547. And then not only that,

  548. but they will give them these speaking engagements

  549. where basically they won't bribe a public official outright,

  550. they'll just say,

  551. hey, I want you to give a speech over here for five minutes,

  552. here's $250,000, right?

  553. So we're going to pay you just this insane speaking fee

  554. and that's why you'll see a lot of presidents

  555. and congressmen,

  556. when they finish their term,

  557. they'll go on these speaking tours

  558. and they're speaking

  559. and they're getting paid these insane amounts of money

  560. because it's already been agreed earlier

  561. that like, hey, you do X, Y, and Z for us

  562. and then when your term ends,

  563. we're going to pay you millions of dollars

  564. to come make speeches for us.

  565. And so there are a lot of ways

  566. that these gifts are given

  567. and what does the Bible say?

  568. He that is greedy of gain trouble at his own house

  569. but he that hate it, gifts shall live.

  570. The Bible's saying, you know,

  571. you should be the kind of person that says,

  572. you know what, I'm going to do what's right

  573. and I'm not going to be bribed,

  574. nobody's going to pay me

  575. to do something that's immoral

  576. or unethical or not right.

  577. I'd rather just live off my paycheck,

  578. live off my wages

  579. than to take money for doing wrong.

  580. And interesting as a preacher,

  581. how this manifests is the Bible says

  582. that false prophets will teach things

  583. that they ought not

  584. for filthy Luke or sake.

  585. So just as the politician

  586. will pass legislation

  587. that is not right

  588. because he's being bribed

  589. and getting gifts

  590. and people are lobbying

  591. and whining and dining him

  592. and paying him for speaking engagements,

  593. giving him insider tips

  594. for stock trading or whatever.

  595. Well, you know what,

  596. the same way as a pastor,

  597. I don't want to get up

  598. and teach a false doctrine

  599. because I know, hey,

  600. this is what people want to hear

  601. and then people are going to donate

  602. money or give me gifts or whatever.

  603. You know, we can't let that

  604. cloud our judgment

  605. as leaders.

  606. So that's what the Bible says,

  607. he that hated gifts shall live.

  608. The guy who is actually

  609. you know, going to do what's right

  610. and he hates the idea of being bribed.

  611. He hates the idea of getting up

  612. and preaching

  613. because there's a paycheck

  614. involved to preach something wrong.

  615. There's nothing wrong with getting paid

  616. as a politician

  617. or getting paid as a preacher,

  618. but you got to be content with your wages

  619. and not say, oh, well,

  620. I want to make the big bucks.

  621. So I'm just going to teach

  622. what's going to make me super popular.

  623. Get me on the New York bestseller list

  624. or what, New York Times bestseller list.

  625. You know, because I'm going to write a book

  626. about how God's not mad at you

  627. and no matter who you are

  628. and no matter what you've done,

  629. God is not mad at you.

  630. Hey, that's a lie,

  631. but she made millions of money off that.

  632. And I'm talking about the female Joker

  633. if you're not sure what I'm talking about.

  634. But look at Proverbs chapter 21 verse 25.

    Proverbs 21:25

  635. Proverbs chapter 21 verse 25 says this,

    Proverbs 21:25

  636. the desire of the slothful killeth him.

  637. Slothful means lazy, right?

  638. The sluggered, the slovenly slothful man.

  639. The desire of the slothful killeth him

  640. for his hands refused to labor.

  641. He coveteth greedily all the day long,

  642. but the righteous giveeth and spareeth not.

  643. So notice that greed and covetousness

  644. go hand in hand.

  645. Covening is desiring something

  646. that is not legitimately yours.

  647. And so he covets greedily all the day long.

  648. He's too lazy to work legitimately

  649. but he still just covets greedily all the day long.

  650. Whereas the righteous gives and spares not.

  651. Here's another way of saying that,

  652. the righteous is liberal.

  653. You know, the righteous gives and spares not.

  654. He's free with his possessions, free with his money.

  655. He's not just like greedily coveting other people.

  656. So he wants to help other people

  657. and give and be generous to his people.

  658. Go through it to Psalm 17, Psalm 17.

  659. And we're looking at, like I said,

  660. we're looking at virtually every mention of greed

  661. in the Bible is what we're doing.

  662. You know, because like I said,

  663. I was shown a video in high school

  664. and the guy who showed it to us

  665. was a born again Christian actually.

  666. My economics teacher in high school

  667. was a born again Christian.

  668. He was conservative.

  669. He had a lot of great views on economics

  670. and politics and everything like that.

  671. But the thing is like Bro just went a little too far

  672. when he's showing us a video

  673. about how greed is actually good.

  674. Like that's when you've gone a little too overboard

  675. on that viewpoint.

  676. Okay.

  677. So look at Psalm 17, verse 8.

    Psalms 17:8

  678. It says,

  679. Keep me as the apple of the eye.

  680. Hide me under the shadow of thy wings

  681. from the wicked that oppressed me

  682. from my deadly enemies who compass me about.

  683. They're enclosed in their own fat.

  684. With their mouth they speak proudly.

  685. They have now compassed us in our steps.

  686. They've set their eyes bowing down to the earth

  687. like as a lion that is greedy of his prey

  688. as it were a young lion lurking in secret places.

  689. Arise, O Lord.

  690. Disappoint him.

  691. Cast him down.

  692. Deliver my soul from the wicked which is thy sword.

  693. From men which are thy hand, O Lord,

  694. from men of the world which watch this

  695. have their portion in this life

  696. and whose belly thou fillest with thy head treasure.

  697. They're full of children

  698. and leave the rest of their substance to their babes.

  699. As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness.

  700. I shall be satisfied when I awake with thy likeness.

  701. So again, he's graphically describing these people

  702. who are enclosed in their own fat

  703. and yet they just can't have enough.

  704. They're just greedy.

  705. They just want more

  706. and they're willing to hurt other people to get it.

  707. And so I hope you're seeing a pattern.

  708. Go through it to Ezekiel chapter 22.

    Ezekiel 22 chapter mention

  709. I hope you're seeing a pattern

  710. that as we look up these mentions of greed,

  711. it's always very negative.

  712. This is never a good thing, right?

  713. Greed is people wanting more than is legitimately theirs.

  714. They're never satisfied.

  715. And you know, the Psalmist is saying,

  716. as for me, I will be satisfied

  717. when I awake with thy likeness.

  718. It's like I'm just satisfied to be saved,

  719. to be a new creature in Christ.

  720. I'm just gonna be satisfied to just go to heaven one day

  721. and to be like Christ

  722. and we shall be like him

  723. for we shall see him as he is.

  724. I'll be satisfied when I awake with thy likeness.

  725. Whereas these people that are enclosed in their own fat

  726. and greedy like lions,

  727. you know, they're never satisfied.

  728. Their greed is endless.

  729. You know, it talks about this in Habakkuk chapter 2

    Habakkuk 2 chapter mention

  730. when it talks about Nebuchadnezzar,

  731. the king of Babylon,

  732. how his desire is enlarged as hell

  733. and is as death and cannot be satisfied

  734. but gathered under them all nations

  735. and heapeth unto them all people

  736. just no matter how much he conquers,

  737. it's never gonna be enough.

  738. It's never gonna be enough wealth and power.

  739. That's the greed of the human condition, unfortunately.

  740. Look at Ezekiel 22 verse 12.

    Ezekiel 22:12

  741. In thee they have taken gifts to shed blood.

  742. This goes back to what we said earlier

  743. about how the gift is talking about bribery.

  744. And here when it says they've taken gifts to shed blood,

  745. the idea here is you could look at it as obviously just,

  746. you know, paying someone to kill someone,

  747. like be, you know, just basically, you know,

  748. paying to have someone murdered.

  749. But also this could be also an illegal setting

  750. where you're bribing judges or bribing people

  751. to condemn the innocent and put someone to death

  752. who's just in your way,

  753. somebody that you want to get out of the way,

  754. a business rival or you want to get the inheritance

  755. or whatever, you know,

  756. and you bribe someone to get that person put to death

  757. wrongfully through false witness.

  758. Like remember the story of Naboth's vineyard, right?

  759. Ahab just really wants his little garden of herbs or whatever.

  760. I mean, he's king of Israel.

  761. He's got a palace.

  762. He's got all kinds of property,

  763. but he has to have this one little special garden of herbs.

  764. And so what do they end up doing?

  765. They end up bribing false witnesses

  766. to testify against Naboth

  767. and put him to death wrongfully

  768. so that they can seize his property, right?

  769. Taking away the life of the owners thereof.

  770. So all of these scriptures that we're seeing,

  771. Bible stories illustrate these principles

  772. that we're reading in Proverbs and in the Prophets.

  773. We see Bible stories that illustrate these principles.

  774. And so it says in Ezekiel 22, 12,

  775. in thee have they taken gifts to shed blood, right?

  776. That's like the people who testified against Naboth,

  777. for example.

  778. There obviously could be a lot of other things.

  779. Thou hast taken usury and increase

  780. and thou hast greedily gained of thy neighbors

  781. by extortion and as forgotten me sayeth the Lord God.

  782. What is extortion is forcing people to pay you, right?

  783. And saying, hey, you know,

  784. this is the neighborhood safety association

  785. and everybody's got to be a member

  786. because we'd hate for something to happen

  787. to your business, you know?

  788. And so it's like, you got to pay us money

  789. and we'll leave you alone basically.

  790. Pay us money for safety.

  791. It's really just organized criminals stealing your money, okay?

  792. And that's what extortion is.

  793. He says in verse 13,

  794. behold, therefore I've smitten my hand

  795. at thy dishonest gain which thou hast made

  796. and at thy blood which have been in the midst of thee.

  797. He's saying, look, don't get dishonest gain

  798. through extortion, charging interest,

  799. predatory lending, charging a bunch of fees

  800. and ripping people off and stealing from people is wrong.

  801. How about Ephesians chapter four?

  802. You don't have to turn their turn to first Timothy six,

  803. if you would.

  804. Ephesians chapter four says,

  805. who being past feeling have given themselves over

  806. unto lasciviousness to work all uncleanness with greediness.

  807. So, so far all the scriptures we looked at about greed

  808. were about money, greedy of money.

  809. But in the New Testament in Ephesians,

  810. that's talking about the kind of greed I mentioned earlier

  811. of not being satisfied with your wife

  812. and you know, you're going out and committing fornication,

  813. lasciviousness, uncleanness with greediness, right?

  814. Just being unsatisfied with what God has provided for you

  815. and you want to just go out and be a whoremonger

  816. instead of being satisfied with the God given remedy

  817. which is your wife and you know,

  818. having that physical relationship with her.

  819. So, look if you would at, and then also the last mention

  820. that I found is Jude where he says,

  821. woe unto them, they've gone in the way of Cain

  822. and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward.

  823. And again, Balaam's a false prophet,

  824. taking money to do wrong, teaching things

  825. was they ought not for filthy Luke or sake.

  826. So, actually keep your finger in first Timothy six

  827. and let's go finish up in Nehemiah five

  828. and then we're going to come back to first Timothy six.

  829. So, keep a finger in first Timothy six

  830. and let's finish up in Nehemiah chapter five here.

  831. Because first of all, the first part of the chapter

  832. is Nehemiah is rebuking them for being greedy

  833. and for rich people ripping off poor people

  834. and just trying to take as much from them

  835. and just squeeze them for as much money as they can.

  836. And that's obviously wrong.

  837. We as Christians, and by the way,

  838. if you're a Christian business owner,

  839. you should not have a goal to just see

  840. how little you can pay people.

  841. You know what I'm saying?

  842. Like, obviously you got to make money

  843. and you got to have a business that makes sense

  844. and everything, but you know what?

  845. You should try to be generous and pay people

  846. an honest wage for an honest day's work

  847. and not be like, well, how little can I pay this guy?

  848. How can I just squeeze this guy

  849. and get as much work for as little money as well?

  850. I mean, is that really the right Christian attitude?

  851. And then on the other side of that,

  852. if you're the worker, you shouldn't be like,

  853. well, how little work can I do for this paycheck, right?

  854. The way that the world should function

  855. is that the boss is being generous with the employees

  856. and not trying to pay them as little as possible.

  857. And then the employees are trying to work as hard as they can

  858. and not work as little as possible.

  859. They're trying to go above and beyond

  860. and do extra and work hard.

  861. You know what?

  862. That's a beautiful thing.

  863. That's the way it should be.

  864. But instead, this world is filled with workers

  865. phoning it in, patting their hours,

  866. lying on their timesheet, doing as little as possible,

  867. and bosses just trying to pay people as little

  868. as they can get away with

  869. and just the cheapest possible person that they can hire

  870. and paying them as little as they possibly can.

  871. Neither of those are godly situations.

  872. And they're both driven by greed, in a sense.

  873. And so greed is the enemy.

  874. So now let's look at the other side of the coin

  875. because the first part of Nehemiah 5,

  876. he's rebuking the Jews

  877. who are oppressing other Jews.

  878. Now he's going to bring up the fact

  879. that he actually is a very wealthy man, himself.

  880. He's extremely wealthy

  881. and he's actually being generous.

  882. Instead of trying to rip the people off,

  883. he's trying to give and be generous with what he has.

  884. Look if you would have verse 14.

  885. Moreover, from the time that I was appointed

  886. to be their governor in the land of Judah,

  887. from the 20th year, even under the 2 and 30th year

  888. of Artaxerxes the king,

  889. that is 12 years,

  890. I and my brethren have not eaten the bread

  891. of the governor.

  892. What's he saying?

  893. He's saying, look,

  894. I am not even taking some of the pay

  895. and some of the compensation that's due to me

  896. as the governor,

  897. I'm returning that stuff

  898. because I don't want to oppress

  899. people that are already struggling financially.

  900. I don't want to have to tax people.

  901. So I'm not even taking what's coming.

  902. This would be like a politician,

  903. not using his old budget

  904. or not taking his full paycheck or whatever.

  905. And like, for example,

  906. Congressman Ron Paul famously would return part of his budget

  907. every year

  908. and he was the only congressman

  909. who didn't just spend all the money

  910. that he was allowed to spend or whatever.

  911. And so Nehemiah is basically saying,

  912. hey, I have not eaten the bread of the governor

  913. but the former governors that had been before me

  914. were chargeable under the people

  915. and had taken of them bread and wine.

  916. So here's the thing,

  917. it's like the people are struggling,

  918. the people are poor

  919. and these rich fat cat governors

  920. are taking bread, wine,

  921. beside the 40 shekels of silver.

  922. Yay, even their servants bear rule over the people

  923. but so did not I because of the fear of God.

  924. He said, look, former governors have done this.

  925. Now, do you think that there's anything new under the sun?

  926. In 2026, unfortunately,

  927. a lot of leaders will live a really high life

  928. and take people's money

  929. and just abuse the privilege of being a governor

  930. or in government in some way.

  931. He's saying, you know,

  932. the reason I didn't do that is because I feared God.

  933. You know, he's saying,

  934. I didn't do it because it was the right thing to do

  935. to not oppress people that are already poor

  936. and so because I feared God,

  937. I didn't oppress the poor by taking money from them.

  938. And then he says in verse 16,

  939. yea, also I continued in the work of this wall,

  940. neither bought we any land

  941. and all my servants were gathered under the work.

  942. He's like, look, I came here to try to rebuild Jerusalem,

  943. build the wall and help things out.

  944. I didn't come here for like some real estate investment.

  945. So I'm not buying up all the property

  946. so that I can charge people rent to live on the property

  947. and drive up the real estate and have some scam

  948. where I can get rich in some big real estate scheme

  949. or whatever.

  950. He's like, no man, I'm here to work to help everybody.

  951. He says in verse number 17,

  952. Moreover, there were at my table

  953. 150 of the Jews and rulers,

  954. besides those that came unto us

  955. from among the heathen that are about us.

  956. Now, that which was prepared for me daily

  957. was one ox and six-choice sheep.

  958. Also, fowls were prepared for me

  959. and once in 10 days store of all sorts of wine,

  960. yet for all this required not either bread of the governor

  961. because the bondage was heavy upon this people.

  962. He said, look, the bondage is heavy upon the people.

  963. I don't want them to pay more taxes

  964. than they're already paying.

  965. I don't want to charge them.

  966. And he's like, I already have money.

  967. Now, this is a pretty impressive amount of food

  968. that is being cooked for him every single day.

  969. Now, you can understand why he has 150 people

  970. over eating of his food

  971. because obviously this is not what one person eats.

  972. Okay, daily one ox.

  973. So this is an entire cow every single day.

  974. Now, I don't know about you,

  975. but like my family, we've bought entire cows,

  976. but actually I think we've never bought more than half a cow.

  977. So we would do these things

  978. where we would actually buy like locally raised Arizona beef.

  979. You know, because you know the rancher,

  980. you know where it's coming from,

  981. you know it's all truly free range,

  982. organic, good stuff.

  983. You're helping out your local rancher business.

  984. It's a benefit for everybody.

  985. So who's ever been to my house

  986. and like got a piece of a cow that I bought?

  987. All right, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven.

  988. Yeah, so it's not 150, but no, I'm just kidding.

  989. But yeah, so there's like 10 people here

  990. who've been to my house

  991. and when we did these big like beef buys

  992. and we'd buy like a full cow or a couple full cows

  993. and then we'd all split it up

  994. and that would last us for like months.

  995. Right?

  996. This guy's killing a whole cow every single day.

  997. So that's crazy because if we killed a whole cow,

  998. we're gonna, our whole family's gonna eat that

  999. for like months and months and months, okay?

1000. But that's just the one ox, okay?

1001. And then after that, it says six-choice sheep.

1002. So one ox, six sheep, also fowls.

1003. So you know, just on the side,

1004. they got the, you know, the birds

1005. and the chicken and the Cornish game hens

1006. and the geese or whatever they've got

1007. that they're eating on the side.

1008. So one ox, six-choice sheep and fowl.

1009. And then once every 10 days, all, you know,

1010. that's where they get out the fruit punch

1011. and the fruit juices and, you know,

1012. and indulge in that stuff

1013. because that stuff was extremely expensive back

  1014. before you had machines

1015. that would actually make the juice and so forth.

1016. And so it had to be made by human labor.

1017. So the bottom line is that he has this massive amount

1018. of food being prepared every day.

1019. So he's sharing with like 150 of the local Jews,

1020. but then also a bunch of foreigners are coming.

  1021. So it's more than 150 people

1022. that he's offering just this giant buffet to.

1023. And then he says in verse 19,

1024. think upon me, my God,

1025. for good according to all that I've done for this people.

1026. So he's praying to God and he's saying,

1027. God, look, I'm being generous.

  1028. I'm helping people out.

1029. Bless me for doing that, God.

  1030. And you know what?

1031. God is going to bless you

1032. when you are generous and not greedy.

1033. If you are generous and helping other people,

  1034. caring about other people,

1035. God's going to bless you.

  1036. And if you're greedy,

1037. God is not going to bless that.

1038. God's going to curse that if you're greedy

1039. because what did he say in Proverbs 28,

  1040. he said,

1041. he that by usury and unjust gain

  1042. increases his substance,

1043. he shall gather it for him

1044. that will pity the poor.

1045. So the Bible is saying,

1046. God will take it away from you

1047. and give it to somebody

1048. who is actually a good, generous person.

1049. Now I do want to say this.

  1050. Nobody's asking Nehemiah

1051. to live like everybody else

  1052. because here's the thing.

  1053. If you work hard,

1054. you're entitled to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

1055. So if you go out and work 16-hour days

  1056. and build a business,

1057. and look, building your own business

1058. is a lot of work.

  1059. It's stressful.

  1060. It's strenuous.

1061. It takes a ton of work

  1062. and there's risk involved.

1063. So look, if you go out

1064. and actually start a business

1065. and put in all that work

1066. and effort and blood, sweat, tears

  1067. and take that chance,

  1068. you deserve more

  1069. than just some guy

1070. who's just clocking in and out

  1071. at McDonald's, right?

  1072. So this weird,

  1073. commie idea

1074. that everyone should be equal

  1075. is foolish

  1076. because then people

1077. aren't going to be motivated

1078. to go out and do all this work

  1079. and push themselves

1080. so that they can just

  1081. be like everybody else.

  1082. It's like, well, no.

1083. Obviously, people who work hard

1084. and excel and do more,

1085. they're entitled to have more, right?

1086. And so what we want in our world

1087. is we don't want equality of outcome.

1088. We want equality of opportunity, right?

1089. We don't want to say,

1090. hey, we're going to give white people

  1091. more of an opportunity

1092. than black people or vice versa.

  1093. We just want everybody

  1094. to have the opportunity,

1095. but at the end of the day,

1096. you're going to get rewarded

1097. according to what you do.

1098. And I mean, even Jesus Christ

1099. when he returns one day,

1100. he says, behold, I come quickly

1101. and my reward is with me

  1102. to give every man

1103. according as his work shall be.

  1104. Notice when Jesus returns,

1105. he's not giving to everyone equally.

1106. When we get to heaven,

  1107. sorry, we're not all

1108. going to be the same in heaven.

1109. Some people are going to have

1110. a higher rank and a higher status

1111. and a higher level of reward

  1112. than others.

1113. And God is going to reward

1114. everyone according to their works.

1115. We're not saved by works,

  1116. but once we're saved,

  1117. if we do works,

1118. we get rewarded for our works.

1119. And so when we get to heaven,

1120. it's not going to be

  1121. this egalitarian utopia

  1122. where everybody's the same.

1123. There are going to be people

1124. who did more for Christ

1125. that are going to be ruling

1126. and reigning and at a higher level.

1127. And then there's going to be

1128. the people who just barely got in,

1129. yet so is by fire, right?

1130. The first Corinthians three types,

1131. like the thief on the cross or something,

1132. he's not going to be in the same position

1133. as the apostle Paul in heaven.

1134. So at the end of the day,

1135. we want to have equality

1136. in the sense of we want to have

  1137. equality of opportunity.

1138. Everybody should have the same

1139. opportunities and the same chances

1140. to go out and work hard and make money.

1141. But saying that we all end up

1142. in the same size house,

  1143. driving the same vehicle,

  1144. eating the same food,

1145. getting the same level of services,

  1146. that's stupid and doesn't make sense.

  1147. And by the way,

  1148. everywhere it's been tried,

  1149. it has failed.

1150. All of the socialist systems

1151. of the 20th century have failed.

1152. All of the little socialist utopias

  1153. that they promised,

  1154. they didn't pan out.

1155. And who have been the most

1156. prosperous countries in the world

1157. over the last 150 years

1158. have been the freest countries.

  1159. The countries that have

  1160. the freest economies,

  1161. free market economics works

  1162. everywhere it's tried.

1163. Socialism fails every time it's tried.

  1164. It's just that simple.

  1165. Okay.

1166. So economically it works out that way.

1167. So I'm not up here saying

1168. that everybody should live the same.

  1169. Because let's face it,

1170. Nehemiah is living pretty good.

  1171. I mean if it's your table

1172. and you got an ox

  1173. and six sheep

  1174. and various fowl

  1175. being prepared for you,

1176. not to mention all the veggies

  1177. and side dishes

1178. that he doesn't even bring up.

1179. You're doing pretty stinking good.

  1180. Okay.

  1181. But here's the thing.

  1182. Is that nobody's saying

1183. that you can't work hard,

  1184. build a business,

  1185. make money,

1186. and enjoy the fruit of your labor

  1187. and have nice things.

1188. But you know what you should also

1189. be doing is being generous

  1190. with other people.

1191. And that's what we see Nehemiah.

1192. Yeah, we see him enjoying

1193. the fruit of his labor.

1194. But then we also see him

  1195. being super generous

1196. and helping other people out as well.

1197. So go to 1 Timothy chapter 6

    1 Timothy 6 chapter mention

  1198. and we'll close there.

  1199. 1 Timothy chapter 6.

    1 Timothy 6 chapter mention

1200. So I hope that the sermon

  1201. makes sense to you.

1202. I'm not trying to get all

  1203. into some political

  1204. or economical thing.

1205. I more want to deal

  1206. with the text here

  1207. that you know,

1208. God is against making money

  1209. by lending to people.

  1210. Okay.

1211. This is not a legitimate way

  1212. to make money.

  1213. Okay.

  1214. Lending people money,

  1215. charging interest,

  1216. foreclosing on their stuff.

  1217. You know, that's not

  1218. a good godly way

  1219. to make money.

1220. He wants us to work hard

  1221. and produce things

1222. and to be able to help

  1223. other people.

1224. You know, that's the ideal situation.

1225. And if you work for your boss,

  1226. you should give 100%.

1227. And if you have employees,

1228. you should be generous with them

  1229. and love them

  1230. and care about them

1231. and pay them a decent wage.

  1232. That's what I've always believed

1233. when I was an employee.

  1234. That's what I believe

  1235. when I was a business owner,

  1236. you know,

  1237. because it's just

1238. either side of that coin

  1239. that you're on,

  1240. you know,

1241. you want to do right

  1242. by the Lord

  1243. and fear God

1244. in everything that you do.

  1245. Because the Bible says,

  1246. you know, that servants

  1247. should obey their masters,

  1248. but then it says,

1249. you masters do the same

  1250. things unto them

  1251. for bearing, threatening,

  1252. knowing that your master

  1253. also is in heaven,

  1254. neither is there

1255. respect of persons with them.

1256. So God's up in heaven.

  1257. He's, even if you're

1258. the top dog in your business,

1259. you got to master up in heaven

1260. and he doesn't respect your person.

1261. He sees you the same

  1262. as the poorest person

1263. because the rich and poor

  1264. meet together

1265. in the Lord's sight, right?

  1266. The Lord lightened

  1267. both their eyes.

1268. And so in 1 Timothy,

  1269. chapter number six,

  1270. it says this,

  1271. verse 17,

1272. charge them that are rich

  1273. in this world

1274. that they be not high-minded.

  1275. He's saying, you know,

  1276. if you are wealthy,

1277. if you have a lot of money,

  1278. don't get prideful,

  1279. don't get arrogant,

  1280. don't think that

  1281. you're better

  1282. than other people

  1283. because it's the Lord

1284. that gives you the power

  1285. to get wealth.

  1286. And so you really

  1287. ultimately owe everything

  1288. to him anyway.

1289. Charge them that are rich

  1290. in this world

1291. that they be not high-minded,

1292. nor trust in uncertain riches.

  1293. So he's saying,

  1294. don't get arrogant

  1295. and don't think

  1296. that you're untouchable

  1297. just because you have

  1298. so much money.

1299. Just say, oh, I don't need God.

1300. I can do everything on my own.

  1301. I'm untouchable

  1302. because you know what?

1303. God can take it away from you.

  1304. Riches are uncertain.

  1305. There have been people

  1306. who thought

1307. that they could never lose

  1308. their money

  1309. and they did.

1310. Don't trust in uncertain riches

1311. but trust in the living God

  1312. who giveth us richly

  1313. all things to enjoy.

1314. He says in verse 18

  1315. that they do good.

  1316. This is what

1317. you should tell rich people

1318. that they should do good

1319. and that they should be rich

  1320. in good works.

1321. Don't just be rich in money.

1322. Be rich in work for God.

1323. Be rich in good works.

  1324. Ready to distribute.

  1325. Willing to communicate

  1326. and the communicate here

1327. if you look up that word

  1328. it's talking about

  1329. donating

  1330. and giving money

1331. that's what that actually means.

1332. So you want to be ready

  1333. to distribute.

  1334. Willing to communicate

  1335. meaning that you're willing

  1336. to send money

  1337. to other people

  1338. and distribute

  1339. and share the wealth.

1340. So the Bible is saying

  1341. that rich people

  1342. should be generous.

  1343. They should be giving.

  1344. They shouldn't be just

  1345. greedily hanging on

  1346. to everything for themselves.

  1347. They should do good.

  1348. They should be rich

  1349. in good works

  1350. and they should be

  1351. ready to distribute

  1352. and willing to communicate.

  1353. Laying up in store

  1354. for themselves

  1355. is a good foundation

1356. against the time to come

  1357. that they may lay

  1358. hold on eternal life.

  1359. He's saying look

  1360. they should be

  1361. laying up treasure

  1362. in heaven

  1363. not on this earth.

1364. And what does the Bible say?

1365. Lay not up for yourselves

  1366. treasures upon this earth

  1367. where moth and rust

  1368. with corrupt

  1369. and where thieves

  1370. break through and steal

1371. but lay up for yourselves

  1372. treasures in heaven

  1373. where neither moth

  1374. nor rust with corrupt

  1375. and where thieves

  1376. do not break through

  1377. nor steal

1378. for where your treasure is

  1379. there will your heart

  1380. be also.

1381. And so God doesn't want us

  1382. to just be greedy

  1383. and just storing up

  1384. a bunch of money

  1385. on this earth

  1386. because then our heart

1387. is going to be on this earth.

  1388. Whereas if we're giving

  1389. and generous

  1390. and helping others

  1391. and investing in people

1392. and working for the Lord

  1393. then now we're laying

  1394. up treasures in heaven

1395. and our heart's going to be

  1396. in heaven.

  1397. Set your affection

  1398. on things above

1399. not on things on the earth

1400. is what the Bible says

  1401. as well.

  1402. And so rich people

  1403. are commanded

  1404. to be generous

  1405. with their money

  1406. and to think about

  1407. other people

  1408. and to care about

  1409. other people

  1410. but the problem

1411. that we have in our society

  1412. today

1413. is an idea that says

  1414. well let's just have

  1415. the government

  1416. take their money

1417. at the barrel of a gun

  1418. and force that.

1419. Is that what the Bible

  1420. is really teaching?

1421. No, the Bible is teaching

  1422. that this is something

  1423. that they should do

  1424. as a Christian

  1425. that we should do

  1426. as Christians.

  1427. It's not saying

  1428. hey the answer

  1429. is that the government

  1430. steals from the rich

1431. and gives to the poor.

  1432. The problem with

  1433. stealing from the rich

1434. and giving to the poor

  1435. again

  1436. is that the government

  1437. ends up keeping

1438. a lot of the money

  1439. along the way

  1440. and it's also

1441. just not right to steal.

  1442. That should not steal.

  1443. You know and so

  1444. it isn't right

  1445. to rob the rich

  1446. sorry rob and hood

  1447. but it's not right

  1448. to rob the rich

1449. to give to the poor

  1450. and I know that

1451. the story of rob and hood

1452. is a little more complex

  1453. than that.

  1454. Okay

  1455. but I guess I just

  1456. saw the Disney cartoon

  1457. okay so

  1458. you know

  1459. I'll leave it

  1460. that's not true

  1461. I've read

1462. several rob and hood books

  1463. I've read Ivan Ho

  1464. okay

  1465. but the point is

1466. that we as God's people

  1467. you know

1468. even if you don't care

  1469. about economics

1470. even if you don't care

  1471. about politics

  1472. you know you need

  1473. to have a right

  1474. relationship with money

  1475. and you'd have a right

  1476. view toward money

  1477. and so

  1478. if you're

1479. if you're on the poor

  1480. end of the spectrum

1481. and you don't have a lot of money

  1482. don't sit around

  1483. fantasizing and wishing

  1484. that you were rich

1485. be content with what you have

  1486. work hard

1487. and try to do the best you can

  1488. improve your situation

  1489. financially

  1490. you know

1491. that's all you can do

  1492. right

  1493. work hard

  1494. pray

  1495. live for God

  1496. let God bless you

  1497. and try to improve

  1498. your situation financially

  1499. and if you are

  1500. well healed

1501. and if you have been

  1502. blessed with riches

  1503. and abundance

  1504. you know what

1505. you shouldn't get all arrogant

  1506. cocky

  1507. and think you're great

  1508. you should be humble

1509. and say you know what

  1510. God has given me

1511. God has blessed me with this

1512. I'm going to bless other people

1513. I'm going to help people out

1514. I'm going to be generous

1515. I'm going to be giving

  1516. I'm going to be

  1517. thinking about heaven

1518. and laying up treasures in heaven

1519. and I'm not just going to sit here

  1520. and pay my employees

1521. as little as I absolutely can

1522. and just increase my bottom line

1523. and it's not just paying

  1524. your employees too little

  1525. it's lowering quality

  1526. for the customer too

  1527. how about that

  1528. it's

  1529. I mean

  1530. look how many companies

  1531. get greedy man

  1532. it's horrible

  1533. like restaurants

1534. will start out really good

  1535. and they're making a great meal

  1536. and you're paying

  1537. and you're happy

  1538. to pay

  1539. and get that meal

  1540. and then it's like

  1541. somewhere along the line

  1542. some greedy CEO

  1543. gets in there

  1544. and just wants to

  1545. sell you

  1546. all the

  1547. lower quality meat

  1548. and lower quality veggies

  1549. and everything

1550. and just ruin the menu

  1551. and then these restaurants

  1552. you know

1553. in the words of our

  1554. young people

1555. they tend to fall off

  1556. you know

1557. and they're just not as good

1558. as they used to be

  1559. you know

  1560. nothing makes me matter

1561. than to buy a drill bit

  1562. at Home Depot

1563. and the thing just melts

  1564. into nothingness

  1565. it just

  1566. it just disintegrates

  1567. on the first use

  1568. you know

  1569. I bought a shovel

1570. one time at Home Depot

  1571. and I returned it

  1572. like an hour later

  1573. and the lady said

  1574. why are you returning

  1575. the shovel

  1576. and I said

  1577. this is why

  1578. and I reached up

  1579. with my bare hands

  1580. and I'm not Samson

  1581. up here okay

  1582. I reached up

  1583. with my bare hands

1584. and just bent the shovel

  1585. and just went

  1586. I said

1587. this is why I'm returning it

  1588. because I shouldn't be able

1589. to bend the shovel head

  1590. with my bare hands

  1591. but why

  1592. why is it like

1593. why can I bend the shovel head

  1594. with my bare hands

  1595. it's a worthless tool

  1596. why

  1597. because they have used

  1598. some super cheap metal

  1599. because they're just

  1600. being greedy

  1601. I mean

  1602. you know that

1603. they're making tons of money

  1604. it's probably some company

  1605. and the CEO

  1606. is making millions

1607. and the company is making millions

1608. and then they just have to

  1609. sell you crap

1610. that's going to just ruin your day

  1611. and ruin your life

  1612. and waste your time

  1613. because look

  1614. I know that

1615. maybe some don't understand this

  1616. but when you're a tradesman

  1617. having crappy tools

1618. is like the worst thing ever

1619. and having the right tool

1620. just makes everything so wonderful

1621. you know I remember one time

1622. I was out in the coal

  1623. I was at this

1624. I was working on this gas station

  1625. out in the Midwest

  1626. and it was like

  1627. snowing outside

  1628. and I was freezing

1629. and like my drill bits

  1630. were all garbage

1631. and I was just cursing these drill bits

  1632. and then

1633. the angel of the Lord

  1634. appeared unto me

1635. I think this might have been

  1636. an angel unawares

  1637. I'm out here struggling

1638. and fighting to do this job

1639. and I didn't have the right equipment

1640. to do what I needed to do

1641. and I was so upset

1642. and this man walks up to me

1643. the angel of the Lord

1644. he walks up to me

1645. and he just walked up to me

1646. and it was so dramatic

1647. he just looks at me

1648. and he just goes like this

1649. don't you just want to get the hell out of here

1650. and he just opens his hand

1651. and he just had four of like

1652. the exact parts that I needed

1653. and I was out of there in like

  1654. five minutes

1655. and I would have been there for an hour

  1656. and I was freezing

  1657. and cold and wet

  1658. and whatever

  1659. you know

1660. and that but you know

  1661. God sent his angel

  1662. I was so happy

  1663. I was so thankful

1664. this guy just had the exact

  1665. like self tapping

  1666. bolts that I needed

1667. and he just held out his hand

  1668. and he's just like

1669. this is exactly what you need

  1670. I was just like

  1671. wow

  1672. and then you know

1673. he went up in a fire

  1674. no I'm just kidding

  1675. that part didn't happen

1676. but the rest of the story is true

  1677. and I ended up

  1678. you know

  1679. using those four bolts

  1680. that he gave me

1681. and it was just like

  1682. the perfect tool

1683. perfect thing that I needed

  1684. it was great

  1685. you know what

1686. but why are these companies

  1687. torturing us

  1688. with cheap drill bits

1689. why are they torturing us

  1690. with shovels

1691. made out of these weak alloys

  1692. and selling you tools

  1693. that break all that

1694. you know what I'm talking about

1695. you buy those cheap tools

  1696. and they break

1697. what kind of a person

  1698. manufactures that stuff

1699. how do you live with yourself

1700. how do you even go to bed

  1701. at night

  1702. when you're selling

  1703. bad tools

  1704. you just hate everyone

  1705. the spawn of satan

  1706. I'm just

  1707. I'm serious

  1708. you know

  1709. what is it

  1710. it's greed

  1711. so you know what

1712. if you were on a business

1713. don't cut the quality either

  1714. and look

1715. obviously you got to charge

  1716. you got to charge

  1717. money to where

  1718. you're making money

1719. you don't want to be

  1720. one of these people

  1721. that charges too little

1722. and then they go out of

  1723. business because

  1724. they're not charging enough

  1725. obviously yeah

1726. you can pay your employees

  1727. too much

1728. you can charge the customer

  1729. too little

  1730. whatever

  1731. but you know what

  1732. you should

  1733. you do quality work

1734. and charge a decent price

  1735. make money

  1736. but don't get greedy

  1737. work hard

  1738. make money

  1739. and you know what

  1740. I'm not against you

1741. making huge amounts of money

  1742. and making money

  1743. hand over fist

  1744. but you know what

  1745. when you do

  1746. don't get greedy

  1747. don't get arrogant

  1748. and be generous

  1749. and share the wealth

1750. that's what the bible says

  1751. that you should do

  1752. you should be generous

  1753. toward the lord

  1754. you should be generous

  1755. toward your fellow man

1756. that's what the bible says

  1757. let's borrow it's not

1758. father thank you so much

  1759. for this chapter lord

1760. thank you for the example

  1761. of Nehemiah

1762. who was a wealthy man

1763. but he shared with others

  1764. and he rebuked

  1765. and preached hard

  1766. against those

  1767. who were greedy

  1768. and taking advantage

  1769. of the poor lord

1770. help us to love one another

  1771. help us to love

  1772. employees

1773. help us to love customers

  1774. help us to love

  1775. our fellow man

  1776. and to do right

  1777. by everyone

  1778. and monday tuesday

  1779. wednesday thursday

1780. when we go to work lord

1781. help us to have integrity

  1782. in business

  1783. and to do right

  1784. and in jesus name

  1785. we pray amen
