  1. Men, 2 Kings chapter number 14,

  2. if you recall last week in chapter 13,

  3. we kind of stepped away from the southern kingdom of Judah

  4. and we're talking about the northern kingdom of Israel.

  5. That's kind of how the book of 2 Kings is.

  6. It'll go back and forth between northern and southern kingdoms.

  7. So we're picking up now where we left off.

  8. And if you remember that Joash was the young boy

  9. who started raining when he's eight years old

  10. and he did what was right on the side of the Lord

  11. until the death of Jehoi to the priest.

  12. And then after Jehoi to the priest died

  13. who was his greatest spiritual influence,

  14. his main leader, his mentor,

  15. once Jehoi to the high priest died,

  16. remember all those flatterers came and made obeisance to him

  17. and then he led the nation into idolatry

  18. and he ended up being murdered

  19. and not being blessed by God.

  20. Well, what's interesting here is that in chapter 14,

  21. we hear about his son.

  22. It says in verse number one in the second year

  23. of Jehoi, son of Jehoi, king of Israel,

  24. reigned Amaziah, the son of Jehoi, king of Judah.

  25. And what we're gonna see about Amaziah,

  26. the son of Jehoi, is that he's basically,

  27. just like his dad, where he starts out doing good.

  28. He starts out doing right in the side of the Lord

  29. and then later in life he falls away,

  30. gets into idolatry, screws up his life.

  31. And what's interesting too is that they both

  32. end up dying the same way

  33. because just as Joash is murdered by a conspiracy

  34. within his own kingdom,

  35. it's exactly what's gonna happen to Amaziah,

  36. kind of just showing you that history repeats itself

  37. and if you do the same stupid things

  38. that other people did, you're probably gonna end up

  39. the same failure and having the same problems.

  40. And so what we need to understand is that

  41. there's a big problem with people not making it

  42. all the way to the finish line in the Christian life.

  43. I mean, how many people have we known

  44. in our lives that used to be doing great things for God?

  45. They used to be faithful to church, soul-winning,

  46. maybe pastoring, preaching great sermons

  47. and one way or another they go down some dark path,

  48. they get back slidden, they become a bozo,

  49. whatever happens, they end up ruining their testimony,

  50. their work for God, their trajectory as servants of God.

  51. I mean, we've gotta make it to the end, folks.

  52. We've got to finish and make it to the end.

  53. You look at the Apostle Paul, he said,

  54. I've finished my course, I've kept the faith.

  55. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness

  56. which the Lord, the righteous judge

  57. shall give me at that day and not only me

  58. but unto all the most of the love is appearing.

  59. DMS has forsaken me having loved this present world.

  60. There are so many people who fall out under casualties.

  61. We wanna be like the Apostle Paul

  62. where we make it to the end.

  63. I fought a good fight, I finished my course,

  64. I kept the faith.

  65. And you know, sad to say it's a rare thing.

  66. Most people, even when they're doing great things

  67. for God, younger in life, will ultimately backslide

  68. and become lame or crash and burn, whatever, okay?

  69. And we see that in both Joash's life

  70. and in his son, Amaziah.

  71. So look what the Bible says in verse two.

  72. It says he was 25 years old when he began to reign

  73. and reigned 29 years in Jerusalem

  74. and his mother's name was Jehovah Dan of Jerusalem

  75. and he did that which was right in the side of the Lord

  76. yet not like David his father.

  77. He did according to all things as Joash's father did

  78. and really what the Bible is actually saying

  79. if we compare the two stories

  80. is really that they did right for a while

  81. and then they did wrong afterward

  82. because what you have to understand

  83. when you're reading Kings and Chronicles

  84. is that God is sort of grading everybody

  85. on a past fail kind of a grade.

  86. It's like you either did right in the side of the Lord

  87. or you did evil in the side of the Lord

  88. as far as just overall looking at your kingdom.

  89. In this case, there has to be this caveat of like,

  90. well, he did right in the side of the Lord

  91. but it wasn't like David

  92. where he's worshiping the Lord all the way to the end.

  93. It was more like his father Joash

  94. and we know that that was a situation

  95. where he did right until he stopped doing right, okay?

  96. And I'm gonna prove this to you

  97. as we go through the passage, okay?

  98. Look at verse number four.

  99. It says, how be it, the high places were not taken away

  100. as yet the people did sacrifice

  101. and burnt incense on the high places.

  102. And so another lesson here

  103. is that when you start out

  104. being kind of half in, half out,

  105. you're not that zealous,

  106. you're not really going all the way

  107. in your service for God.

  108. Well, then, you know, a lot of times

  109. you just end up falling all the way

  110. out of church later on.

  111. So, you know, you're more likely

  112. to actually be in it for the long haul

  113. if you get all the way in.

  114. People who already have one foot in the world,

  115. people who are already not really that committed,

  116. not really that zealous in their Christian walk

  117. in the early days or in their youth.

  118. You know, if anything, the fire

  119. is probably only gonna cool over time.

  120. You got a lot of people that are super zealous,

  121. super fired up, super excited

  122. and then they kind of, you know, taper off.

  123. But at least if you start from a place

  124. of being really zealous

  125. and then you slow down,

  126. you're still doing pretty good.

  127. Whereas if you start out

  128. and you're already just barely hanging in there

  129. and just half in, half out,

  130. well then, as soon as you get back to them,

  131. you're probably just going all the way off the cliff.

  132. And I think that that's what we could say

  133. about both Joash and Amaziah.

  134. Neither of them were ever awesome spiritually.

  135. Therefore, it was easy for them to both

  136. crash and burn spiritually.

  137. Now, there's a guy like King Solomon

  138. who was awesome spiritually,

  139. who was a very great man of God

  140. with a great walk with God

  141. and he still crashed and burned later in life.

  142. But how much more when you're a Joash or an Amaziah

  143. that's really not even that into it?

  144. Look at verse number five.

  145. It says that it came to pass

  146. as soon as the kingdom was confirmed in his hand

  147. that he slew his servants

  148. which had slain the king, his father.

  149. Because remember, it was a conspiracy

  150. within his own kingdom,

  151. within his own household

  152. of the servants that slew his father.

  153. So the first thing he does

  154. is he executes these people, right?

  155. He slew his servants

  156. which had slain his king to father.

  157. And here's the thing,

  158. is that the Bible teaches the death penalty.

  159. The death penalty is biblical

  160. and it's not just biblical in the Old Testament,

  161. it's biblical in the New Testament as well.

  162. Jesus reiterated the death penalty.

  163. Also, the epistles of Paul reiterate the death penalty

  164. because in Romans chapter 13,

    Romans 13 chapter mention

  165. God talks about the fact

  166. that he ordained human government

  167. for the punishment of evil doers.

  168. And the Bible says,

  169. if thou do that which is evil,

  170. be afraid,

  171. for he beareth not the sword in vain.

  172. He is a revenger.

  173. He's the Avenger of God, the minister of God,

  174. a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

  175. So the Bible says that when violent criminals

  176. are executed,

  177. that the one who executes them

  178. is doing the Lord's work,

  179. he is the minister of God,

  180. a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

  181. And you say, well, how do you know

  182. how to talk about the death penalty?

  183. Because it says he beareth not the sword in vain.

  184. Okay, the sword is only used for one punishment

  185. and that's death.

  186. They don't spank people with a sword, okay?

  187. They kill people with a sword.

  188. And so he bears not the sword in vain.

  189. That is capital punishment.

  190. It's taught in the Old Testament.

  191. It's taught in the New Testament.

  192. It's biblical.

  193. Now, obviously, it's only very serious crimes

  194. that are punishable by death.

  195. It's not minor crimes and it shouldn't be.

  196. But here's a crime

  197. that is for sure punishable by death,

  198. first degree murder.

  199. And what does it mean when we say first degree murder?

  200. Because you have second degree murder,

  201. you have manslaughter.

  202. First degree murder is premeditated murder, okay?

  203. As opposed to you had no plans of killing someone

  204. and just in a heat of passion,

  205. in the heat of the moment,

  206. you lose your temper and attack someone

  207. and it's like, oh, what have I done?

  208. I've accidentally killed this person or something like that.

  209. You know, that's a second degree murder.

  210. The Bible uses this wording

  211. to describe second degree murder.

  212. It says that you did not hate him in time past,

  213. meaning that there was no thought in the past of,

  214. oh, I hate this guy, I want him dead.

  215. Whereas premeditated murder

  216. is something that's thought out and planned.

  217. And obviously there's a big murder case

  218. in the news right now of this woman,

  219. Lindsey Clancy, who has murdered three of her children.

  220. And you know, I'm not following the case,

  221. so I don't have the details of the case.

  222. It's kind of hard to ignore it.

  223. It's one of those things

  224. that just kind of people talk about it and hear about it.

  225. But one thing that did come to my attention,

  226. and you can correct me if I'm wrong,

  227. but that there was evidence

  228. that she had planned this murder

  229. as far as she had Googled things

  230. and she had purchased things

  231. and arranged logistics for her husband to be gone

  232. or whatever.

  233. And you know, my understanding is

  234. that she planned and premeditated

  235. the murder of her own children

  236. and then she slittered her wrists

  237. and threw herself out the window

  238. and that's why she's in a wheelchair.

  239. And people are saying, oh, she's innocent

  240. because she's crazy,

  241. but you know, somebody pointed out,

  242. well, isn't everybody who murders their own toddlers crazy?

  243. Is there such thing as a person

  244. who murders their toddler that's not crazy?

  245. It's like, yeah, obviously you're crazy,

  246. but if you're that crazy where you're killing people,

  247. well, sorry, you just need to be removed

  248. from this planet.

  249. Okay, and the thing is that first degree murder

  250. is punishable by death,

  251. not prison, not the loony bin,

  252. not the nut house, it's punishable by death, okay?

  253. And so, you know, we'll see what happens with that trial,

  254. but I don't even think death

  255. is necessarily even on the table.

  256. They can't even figure out

  257. whether they even want to find her guilty or not.

  258. You know, I guess apparently there's three guys

  259. in that jury box trying to mansplain

  260. to the other nine women,

  261. you know, what's going on, I'm just kidding.

  262. I don't know, maybe it's probably,

  263. it could be the dudes for all we know.

  264. These days, you know, they're just white nighting

  265. for this, you know, paraplegic

  266. who murdered her children or whatever.

  267. That wouldn't surprise me at all

  268. if it's actually the women who want to convict

  269. because things are so crazy right now,

  270. anything's on the table.

  271. It's just a weird time that we live in

  272. when people are even wondering, you know,

  273. whether you could just get off the hook

  274. for murdering your kids.

  275. Well, I had postpartum depression.

  276. I had postpartum psychosis.

  277. And here's the thing, postpartum depression's real.

  278. Postpartum psychosis is real.

  279. Anybody who's married knows that women,

  280. when they have children, you know,

  281. it's a hormonal roller coaster.

  282. And obviously as a pastor, I've been exposed to this

  283. a lot because I've counseled with a lot of people.

  284. I've counseled with husbands and wives alike

  285. who have gone through like severe postpartum depression.

  286. And I've even personally dealt with multiple cases

  287. of postpartum psychosis in the last 21 years of fasting.

  288. And let me say this, my wife never had postpartum psychosis.

  289. Let me just give that disclaimer.

  290. When I say that I dealt with it,

  291. I'm talking about people that I counseled with

  292. and helped in our church and other churches.

  293. So I understand that this is a real thing.

  294. I understand that women can get severely depressed,

  295. they can get upset, they can go crazy, hormones,

  296. they get confused or whatever.

  297. But you know what, when you're sitting there

  298. and planning a murder and you're going on the computer

  299. and planning a murder, it's just like, bro, no.

  300. She needs to be put to death.

  301. It's that simple.

  302. So I have now spoken about women's issues as a man.

  303. I just wanted to check that off my list

  304. of things to do today.

  305. So it says in verse number five that he killed

  306. the servants who killed his father.

  307. This is a righteous judgment because he's giving

  308. the death penalty to people who committed

  309. premeditated murder, amen?

  310. But look at verse six, but the children of the murderers,

  311. he slew not.

  312. According unto that, which is written

  313. in the book of the law of Moses,

  314. wherein the Lord commanded saying,

  315. the father shall not be put to death for the children,

  316. nor the children be put to death for the fathers,

  317. but every man shall be put to death for his own sin.

  318. Now let's look at that in the Bible.

  319. Go to Deuteronomy 24, actually go to Ezekiel 18.

  320. Go to Ezekiel 18, I'm gonna read for you

  321. from Deuteronomy from the law of God.

  322. But this is expounded more in Ezekiel.

  323. It says in Deuteronomy 24, 16,

  324. the fathers shall not be put to death

  325. for the children, neither shall the children

  326. be put to death for the fathers.

  327. Every man shall be put to death for his own sin.

  328. And so the Bible is saying it is not right

  329. to punish the parents for what the children do,

  330. or to punish the children for what the parents do, right?

  331. This is part of biblical justice.

  332. Everyone is accountable for their own actions.

  333. And boy, is this something that is missing

  334. in 2026 America, being responsible for your own actions.

  335. Everybody always wants to blame everyone else

  336. for why they did the things that they did.

  337. And you know what?

  338. When people are serial killers

  339. and when people go out and do all these horrific crimes,

  340. they'll go back and look at their childhood and say,

  341. oh, it's because they had this bad teacher

  342. and they had these bad parents

  343. and they had these bad neighbors

  344. and they had the gay uncle that molested them

  345. and whatever.

  346. It's like, okay, you know what?

  347. I'm sorry that those horrible things

  348. happened to that person.

  349. But at the end of the day,

  350. for every serial killer and maniac

  351. who went through those things,

  352. you can find a whole bunch of other people

  353. who went through those same things

  354. and came out and did right, right?

  355. Hey, I've known people who were abused, molested

  356. and raped and whatever that turned out to be great people.

  357. You know?

  358. And then I've known people who had bad upbringings

  359. and came from a bad neighborhood and turned out great.

  360. And then there are other people

  361. who use those things as an excuse

  362. to become wicked themselves.

  363. And you know, at the end of the day,

  364. we're all gonna go through bad things in our lives.

  365. We're all gonna go through things

  366. and obviously some of us are more privileged than others.

  367. And I'll be the first one to tell you

  368. that I had a super privileged upbringing

  369. because both of my parents are saved Christians.

  370. They're both great people.

  371. I had a great childhood.

  372. And so I understand that I'm more blessed

  373. and privileged in my upbringing

  374. than probably 99% of people on the planet.

  375. And I thank God for it.

  376. So I'm not sitting there saying,

  377. hey man, I came from the same streets that you came from.

  378. No, I didn't, okay?

  379. I didn't come from those streets.

  380. I came from, you know, suburbia,

  381. living the dream in the 1980s with my BMX bike

  382. and my Nintendo and a glass of Ovaltine

  383. and, you know, being home

  384. when the street lights came on or whatever, okay?

  385. So yeah, I had a great upbringing

  386. but you know what?

  387. I went through stuff later that sucked, okay?

  388. Well, like much later.

  389. And so we all in our lives are gonna go through

  390. nightmarish, terrible things.

  391. If you don't go through it as a kid,

  392. you'll go through stuff as an adult.

  393. It's life.

  394. This world is a messed up place.

  395. The Bible says the dark places of the earth

  396. are full of the habitations of cruelty.

  397. Psalm 74 verse 20, right?

    Psalms 74:20

  398. This world's messed up.

  399. And so therefore everybody is gonna go through

  400. these traumas and difficulties and hard things.

  401. But you know what?

  402. You can use those things as an excuse to do wrong

  403. or you can decide that you're gonna do right

  404. in spite of your parents or grandparents

  405. or your faggot uncle or whatever, problems, okay?

  406. Those are wicked things.

  407. I'm sorry for the things you went through.

  408. But you know what?

  409. Even as a kid, even though I consider my upbringing

  410. super great, you know what?

  411. Obviously, even as a kid, there were times

  412. when I got bullied and stuff, when I was in seventh grade,

  413. I went to this really rough school

  414. and went through some things.

  415. It's funny, I didn't even think about that until just now.

  416. I was like telling you how great my childhood was

  417. and then it just dawned on me.

  418. Yeah, I guess there was that year of bad school.

  419. But you know what?

  420. I didn't even think of it.

  421. It's because I don't sit around thinking about it

  422. because I don't care because I'm 45 years old

  423. and so I'm not fixated on something that happened

  424. when I was 12.

  425. It's like get over it.

  426. It's time to move on.

  427. But you know what?

  428. The entire psychiatry industry is based on one thing

  429. and one thing alone, which is blaming your parents.

  430. Which is why virtually, and maybe this is just

  431. a big coincidence, but virtually the exact percentage

  432. of people who go to therapy on a regular basis,

  433. it's the exact same percentage of people

  434. that are estranged from their parents in 2026.

  435. Because think about it.

  436. When I was a kid and we would do an impression

  437. of a psychiatrist, what would we always say?

  438. You know, you'd lay on the couch at your friend's house

  439. and your friend would come up, pull up a chair

  440. and say, tell me about your mother.

  441. That was the big joke because that's what it all is.

  442. It's all blaming your parents,

  443. blaming your mom, blaming your dad.

  444. Well you know what?

  445. I think it was my dad's fault,

  446. but I think that it's his dad's fault

  447. that he is the way he is.

  448. And then you know, if you look at my dad's,

  449. dad, that guy was one mean SOB.

  450. Let me tell you, okay?

  451. One time he went to a restaurant

  452. and he was given ketchup and he had said no ketchup

  453. and he ended up throwing the ketchup bottle at the waiter.

  454. That's my great-grandfather, okay?

  455. Later he ended up after his mother died

  456. and after he had a heart problem diagnosis,

  457. he ended up shooting himself with a shotgun, okay?

  458. Great guy.

  459. So I'm gonna blame that guy for why my grandpa was the way,

  460. but you know what?

  461. I'll bet it wasn't his fault, I bet it was his dad's fault.

  462. He is some messed up guy from Sweden.

  463. The Andersons, you know, it goes all the way back

  464. to Anders, you know?

  465. Because he was Anders' son.

  466. Literally, there's a guy.

  467. I went back far enough to where I got to Anders Andersson,

  468. you know?

  469. Eventually, you go back far enough

  470. and we could keep blaming our dads until we get to Adam.

  471. And then here's what the Bible says,

  472. we're forced by one man, sin entered into the world

  473. and death by sin and so death passed upon all men

  474. for that all have sinned.

  475. I mean, it's just so dumb.

  476. We could just all blame our parents

  477. and then pretty soon we could just blame everything

  478. on Adam and Eve.

  479. It's all Adam and Eve's fault,

  480. but you know what?

  481. It's not just Adam's fault

  482. because Adam was the son of God

  483. and so we're gonna blame God.

  484. It's God's fault.

  485. Because you know what?

  486. People who go through life blaming parents

  487. end up hating God because they blame God

  488. because you follow that train far enough

  489. you end up at the Lord himself, the Creator.

  490. And he's responsible for all of our problems.

  491. And you know what?

  492. It's a stupid, God-hating evil Jew

  493. who invented this psychiatric crap

  494. his name's Sigmund Freud is a pervert and a weirdo

  495. and virtually all of his theories

  496. have been discredited by 2026

  497. but you still have a bunch of bozos

  498. following and quoting that Christ rejecting

  499. Christ-hating Jew Sigmund Freud.

  500. But beloved, what I would like to say

  501. is that your parents are not an excuse for bad behavior.

  502. Nothing is an excuse for bad behavior

  503. because you know what?

  504. I can do all things to Christ which strengthen me.

  505. The Bible says when my mother and father forsake me

  506. then the Lord will take me up.

  507. Right?

  508. You got a father in heaven

  509. that's the greatest dad of all time.

  510. So why don't you just be happy about that

  511. and praise God for that.

  512. And so you always have all this blame on other people.

  513. The Bible's teaching personal responsibility.

  514. Everyone is responsible for their own sins.

  515. We're not gonna blame the parents for what the kids do.

  516. We're not gonna blame the kids for what the parents do.

  517. Every man is gonna take responsibility

  518. for his own actions and his own sins.

  519. The New Testament says every man's gonna bear his own burden

  520. at the end of the day.

  521. And so this idea of always blaming other people,

  522. and look, people commit adultery and then they say,

  523. oh, it's my spouse's fault

  524. because they weren't the right kind of spouse.

  525. It's like, look, here's the thing.

  526. We all should be the best husband that we could be as men.

  527. You ladies should be the best wives you can be.

  528. And obviously, yeah, if you're the best husband

  529. you can be and women are the best wives they can be,

  530. that's gonna be your best case scenario

  531. for having a good marriage that's free of adultery.

  532. Obviously if you're a bad wife or a bad husband

  533. that could exacerbate things and make it worse.

  534. But you know what, at the end of the day,

  535. there's another guy who has a wife just like yours

  536. and he's not committing adultery.

  537. And there's a woman out there that has a husband

  538. just like yours and she's not committing adultery.

  539. Everybody's got their challenges.

  540. Everybody's got their cross to bear.

  541. And there's no excuse for committing murder.

  542. There's no excuse for committing adultery.

  543. There's no excuse for shoplifting and drunkenness

  544. and all of these other things

  545. because at the end of the day

  546. we are responsible for ourselves.

  547. Go if you would to Ezekiel 18 there in verse four

  548. and this concept is played out further.

  549. It says, behold, all souls are mine.

  550. As the soul of the father

  551. so also the soul of the son is mine

  552. the soul that sineth it shall die.

  553. Now, let me just explain to you

  554. that in the Old Testament the word soul

  555. is often what's called a metonymy for the person.

  556. So we're not just talking about specifically

  557. the part of the person that's the soul.

  558. We're talking about the person or the individual.

  559. The Bible will often use the word soul

  560. just to refer to the individual.

  561. Like for example, in the book of Genesis

  562. very early on in the Bible

  563. talks about how Abraham's packing up all of his stuff

  564. to go into Canaan and it says he's packing his gear

  565. and this person, that person

  566. and all the souls that they had gotten inherent.

  567. He's not collecting just souls.

  568. What does that even mean?

  569. When it says the souls that he got inherent

  570. he's talking about he's collecting

  571. people, individuals, people.

  572. And I'm a big foreign language guy.

  573. You guys know I love to study foreign languages

  574. and everything and it's interesting

  575. a lot of foreign languages will use the word soul

  576. this way even today where you'll talk about like

  577. hey this minivan is for seven souls.

  578. If you said that in English you'd sound like

  579. you were being like super spiritual

  580. when you're talking about like yes

  581. we have a passenger van that holds 15 souls.

  582. Amen.

  583. It sounds like you're like doing a hyper spiritual thing.

  584. But in other languages that's just what it is.

  585. It's just like yeah 15 souls, seven souls.

  586. This is a five soul vehicle, okay.

  587. So that's what it means here it says

  588. basically when it's saying the soul

  589. that Sineeth it shall die it's saying hey

  590. the individual who sins is the one who's gonna die.

  591. The individual not the group.

  592. It says in verse 20 the soul that Sineeth it shall die

  593. the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father

  594. neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son

  595. the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him

  596. and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

  597. That's what the Bible says.

  598. And you know what's funny is that I could have a son

  599. grow up, move out of my house, right.

  600. And then that grocery store security guard

  601. gets up and makes a video and says well you know

  602. why don't you take responsibility for what he did.

  603. I'll tell you why I'm not gonna take responsibility.

  604. It's because I didn't do it.

  605. Because when an adult that's out of the house

  606. doing their own thing whatever they do is on them.

  607. Right and so we're not gonna sit there

  608. and punish the righteous for what his wicked son does

  609. or punish the righteous for what his wicked father does.

  610. And so the Bible says the righteousness of the righteous

  611. shall be upon him and the wickedness of the wicked

  612. shall be upon him.

  613. The father shall not bear the iniquity of the son.

  614. Here's another word for that.

  615. The father's not gonna be responsible

  616. for what his adult son is out there doing.

  617. That's not the way the Bible works.

  618. Now here's the thing.

  619. If you have people living in your home

  620. well then you know you're supposed to rule your house

  621. and make sure that things are right in your home.

  622. So therefore in my home it's like as for me in my house

  623. we will serve the Lord.

  624. You know and so it's not the church

  625. is not optional in our home.

  626. Serving the Lord is not optional.

  627. Okay it's not like well you know what can you do

  628. when the teenagers and the young adults

  629. are bringing home drugs and alcohol

  630. and growing their hair long and you know whatever.

  631. No in my house it's my rules.

  632. You know I'm gonna have a certain standard

  633. of righteousness that I'm gonna enforce in my home.

  634. And look I remember I preached this back in 2007

  635. and had a whole family leave the church

  636. because I got up and preached it is not right

  637. for you to have your adult children

  638. fornicating in your home.

  639. You should not be allowing fornication

  640. to go on in your home.

  641. It's your house you're paying the bills

  642. fornication's not allowed in my house.

  643. Now is that a wild thing to preach?

  644. Is that just really crazy stuff?

  645. I think that's pretty reasonable to say

  646. my house is not gonna be a house of fornication.

  647. It's not gonna be a place where adultery

  648. takes place under my roof.

  649. You know I'm not gonna have somebody

  650. smoking a doobie in my backyard.

  651. Right it's gonna be a drug free, alcohol free

  652. fornication free home.

  653. Okay and you know there was a fundamental

  654. Baptist preacher of the 1980s who once said

  655. I'll kick you out of my home if that's

  656. the clothes you're gonna wear.

  657. I'll kick you out of my house

  658. if you don't cut that hair.

  659. Okay actually it was the BC boys.

  660. But you know it just goes to show you

  661. that even a worldly song is telling you

  662. hey there's some standards to live in your parent's home.

  663. But today that's so just taboo to get up and say

  664. hey I'm not gonna allow those things to go on in my home.

  665. I literally preached a sermon in 2007

  666. you can't have fornication in your house.

  667. And a whole family left the church

  668. because one of their children is just

  669. living in fornication in their home

  670. and they're just fine with it.

  671. Well sorry, bye, see you later.

  672. It's amazing how we're still here.

  673. Even losing that family in 2007.

  674. Somehow the church still survived.

  675. Go back if you would to 2 Kings chapter 14 verse 7

    2 Kings 14:7

  676. and we'll get back to the story here.

  677. So again the father

  678. shall not bear the iniquity of the son.

  679. So it's like you need to, you're responsible.

  680. You need to answer for what you're,

  681. it's like no I don't.

  682. And you know what, here's the thing.

  683. My mom and dad don't need to answer for what I do.

  684. You know if I say and do things it's not their fault.

  685. Now thankfully my mom and dad are both very proud of me

  686. and I have a great relationship with both of them.

  687. I love them both dearly, we get along great.

  688. But here's the thing, you know

  689. they can't be held responsible

  690. if I were to go out and do something terrible

  691. it's not like what have you done Mrs. Anderson?

  692. You know what have you done brother Anderson?

  693. It wouldn't make any sense.

  694. Because here's the thing

  695. is that if you're gonna be held responsible

  696. I'm going off on a little bit of a tangent

  697. but I wanna make this point

  698. cause I think it's so important.

  699. If you're gonna be held responsible

  700. for someone's behavior

  701. then you have to have the power to curtail that behavior.

  702. True or false?

  703. Like if somebody tells you, if somebody told you this

  704. you can't correct and discipline your children

  705. but you're responsible for what they do.

  706. It's like what, how does that even work?

  707. Because if I'm gonna be responsible for somebody

  708. then I have to be able to tell them what to do.

  709. So like for example, you know

  710. the boss at work, the owner of the company

  711. he's responsible for what you do

  712. when you're on the job, am I right?

  713. Because look if he sends you out to the job site

  714. and you go there and you're stealing things

  715. from the customer's home or whatever

  716. isn't the company gonna be liable

  717. cause they sent this criminal into their home

  718. and you know if he's out driving the company vehicle

  719. and he ends up hurting someone

  720. or if he goes to the job site

  721. and he's up on the ladder goofing around

  722. and falls off and gets hurt

  723. isn't the company gonna be held liable for these things?

  724. Absolutely.

  725. The company is responsible for the employee.

  726. This is why the company has a bunch of rules

  727. for the employee.

  728. And they're enforcing these rules

  729. and saying you have to do things a certain way.

  730. Here's how you're gonna drive the vehicle.

  731. Here's how you're gonna use the ladder.

  732. Here's how you're gonna behave in people's homes

  733. because they're responsible when it goes bad.

  734. And so if you're gonna be held responsible

  735. for someone's actions,

  736. you have to be given the power

  737. to actually curtail those actions.

  738. Okay, that's common sense.

  739. But anyway, look at 2 Kings chapter 14 verse seven.

    2 Kings 14 chapter mention

  740. It says he slew of Edom.

  741. So this is Amaziah while he's doing the right things.

  742. He killed the murderers

  743. but he didn't kill their children

  744. because he really wanted to follow the Bible.

  745. And he wanted to do it the right way.

  746. There were obviously people that were telling him

  747. or suggesting that he also put their children to death

  748. but he's like, no, we're gonna follow the Bible.

  749. The Bible says the soul that sineth it shall die,

  750. not these other people, okay?

  751. I realized that Ezekiel's written later

  752. but Deuteronomy was there.

  753. So it says in verse seven,

  754. he slew of Edom in the valley of Salt 10,000

  755. and took Sila by war

  756. and called the name of it Jock Teal until this day.

  757. Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash,

  758. the son of Jehoah's son of Jehu, King of Israel,

  759. saying, come, let us look one another in the face.

  760. Now what happens here is that Amaziah wins a victory

  761. against Edom and he starts getting arrogant

  762. and haughty and puffed up.

  763. Like he thinks, well, if I can defeat Edom,

  764. I'm gonna take on Israel now

  765. because he's the king of the southern kingdom of Judah.

  766. And so he's like, if I can defeat Edom,

  767. I'm gonna defeat the northern kingdom of Israel.

  768. And what does the Bible say

  769. about getting puffed up and prideful?

  770. Pride goes before destruction

  771. and a haughty spirit before a fall.

  772. Before destruction, the heart of man is haughty

  773. and before honor is humility.

  774. Proverbs 29, 23, a man's pride shall bring him low

  775. but honor shall uphold the humble in spirit.

  776. So he gets cocky, he gets arrogant

  777. and he calls out the king of Israel and says,

  778. hey, let's look each other in the face.

  779. He's trying to taunt him into a battle

  780. where they go head to head.

  781. Now it goes deeper than just pride and arrogance though

  782. because even though verse seven he defeats Edom

  783. and then in verse eight he's calling out Israel,

  784. there's something that takes place

  785. between verses seven and eight that's not mentioned here

  786. but it's mentioned over in Chronicles.

  787. So let's go over to second Chronicles 25

  788. and let's get the inside scoop

  789. about what happened between his victory against Edom

  790. and his failure against the king of Israel, okay?

  791. Go to second Chronicles 25 and look at verse 14.

  792. It says, now it came to pass after that Amaziah

  793. was come from the slaughter of the Edomites

  794. that he brought the gods of the children of Seer

  795. and set them up to be his gods

  796. and bowed down himself before them

  797. and burned incense unto them.

  798. Wherefore, the anger of the Lord

  799. was kindled against Amaziah

  800. and he sent unto him a prophet which said unto him,

  801. why is thou sought after the gods of the people

  802. which could not deliver their own people out of thine hand?

  803. He said, look, this is stupid, this doesn't make any sense.

  804. So you went and defeated,

  805. you've got the God of Israel on your side,

  806. you've got the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob on your side.

  807. You went and fought against the Edomites

  808. and you defeated them

  809. and they're worshiping a false God

  810. and then you decided to start worshiping the false God

  811. that they worship.

  812. It's like, well, why didn't their God protect them from you?

  813. You defeated them,

  814. which is kind of an affront to their false God.

  815. So if their God can't save them,

  816. then why would you worship that fake God?

  817. You know, and again, I think this goes with the theme

  818. that we've had for this chapter

  819. is that history repeats itself

  820. and that what happens to one person

  821. is probably gonna happen to someone else.

  822. So it's like, you start out good,

  823. you become super backslidden and sinful later in life,

  824. you end up crashing and burning,

  825. in this case, getting murdered by your servants.

  826. Your son starts out good, gets into idolatry,

  827. same sin, and then same end gets murdered.

  828. Okay, God, Edomites, worshiping a false God, get smoked.

  829. Adopt their false gods,

  830. guess what, you're probably gonna get smoked.

  831. So he's saying their God didn't help them,

  832. why would it help you?

  833. And so he just adopts these gods of the children of Seer.

  834. And then it says, wherefore the anger of the Lord

  835. was kindled against Amaziah, it says in verse 15.

  836. And then in verse 16, it says, it came to pass

  837. as he talked with them, that the king said unto him,

  838. art thou made of the king's counsel?

  839. Forbear, why shouldest thou be smitten?

  840. He's just saying like, who are you?

  841. Like, are you some counselor to me?

  842. You're not important.

  843. You're just, who are you to some preacher?

  844. He's like, you better shut up,

  845. or I'm gonna command for you to be beaten.

  846. You're gonna be smitten, you're gonna be hit.

  847. And then it says, the prophet forbear.

  848. And said, I know that God has determined to destroy thee,

  849. because thou has done this

  850. and has not harkened unto my counsel.

  851. So here's the thing, when people don't repent,

  852. you know what they're basically telling you is just,

  853. I'm slated for destruction by God.

  854. Right?

  855. You know, it's like if you saw a house

  856. or a building or something that had a side on it

  857. that said, hey, this building's gonna be destroyed

  858. on this and that date.

  859. It's scheduled for demolition on this and that, the date.

  860. You know, these people who often reproved,

  861. hardened their neck, they are scheduled for demolition,

  862. is all that's shown you.

  863. And so here's the thing, you know,

  864. when I'm out soul winning, I have this mentality

  865. where if someone doesn't wanna hear the gospel,

  866. I wanna just move on.

  867. I have no desire to preach the gospel

  868. to people who aren't interested.

  869. So if I'm out soul winning and I knock on a door

  870. and somebody's just like, I'm not interested,

  871. I can't get out of there fast enough.

  872. Why?

  873. Because there's somebody down the street who is interested.

  874. You know, that wants to hear the gospel.

  875. And so if somebody yells at me,

  876. get your blankety blank blank blank,

  877. I'm just like, okay, don't even have to tell me twice.

  878. Why?

  879. Because I'm looking for the person

  880. who wants to hear the gospel.

  881. Okay?

  882. And here's the thing, you know,

  883. when it comes to preaching,

  884. I'm preaching in a church right now

  885. where people have driven out here

  886. because they love the word of God.

  887. They love the Lord.

  888. They wanna be in the house of God.

  889. They wanna learn the Bible.

  890. They wanna hear truth.

  891. They wanna hear unfiltered preaching.

  892. And that's what I wanna preach to.

  893. I don't wanna go out there and, hey,

  894. let's go preach at the queer pride parade or something.

  895. It's like, I'm not interested in preaching

  896. to people that don't wanna hear.

  897. And the Bible says, give not that

  898. which is holy unto the dogs,

  899. neither cast ye your pearls before swine,

  900. lest they trample them under their feet

  901. and turn again and rend you.

  902. He's saying, look, you're just gonna get hurt.

  903. People are gonna physically attack you.

  904. They're gonna physically assault you.

  905. Why would you waste your time

  906. giving precious truths of God's word?

  907. People don't wanna hear it

  908. and are only gonna hurt you.

  909. And so this preacher, that's what he's doing, right?

  910. He's preaching good doctrine,

  911. common sense, Bible-based,

  912. straight from the Lord,

  913. spirit-filled, Bible-preaching.

  914. And the guys are telling him,

  915. shut up for bear.

  916. And you know what he does?

  917. He shuts up.

  918. Cause he's like, well, okay, fine.

  919. Cause now I know God wants to destroy you.

  920. That's why you're not listening.

  921. Bye.

  922. See you later next door.

  923. So this is a smart prophet

  924. because he says if you don't,

  925. you're gonna be smitten.

  926. He says, why would you wanna be smitten?

  927. You better shut up or I'm gonna hit you.

  928. Okay?

  929. Think about it.

  930. This is exactly what the Bible said

  931. that if you cast your pearls before swine,

  932. what are they gonna do?

  933. They're gonna turn around and rend you.

  934. Right?

  935. To rend someone means to tear them.

  936. So this would be analogous to smiting someone,

  937. tearing someone,

  938. hurting someone in some way.

  939. And so he says, you've done this,

  940. you've not harkened to my counsel

  941. because you're just scheduled for demolition.

  942. Verse 17, then Amaziah, King of Judah,

  943. took advice and sent to Joash,

  944. the son of Joahuas,

  945. the son of Jehu, King of Israel,

  946. saying, come, let us see one another in the face.

  947. So do you see now what happened between

  948. verses seven and eight over in 2 Kings 14?

  949. What happened in that gap?

  950. Let's go back to 2 Kings 14.

  951. What happened in the gap between

  952. verses seven and eight is that he adopted

  953. the false gods of Edom.

  954. He started worshiping idols

  955. and then a preacher came and read

  956. and rebuked him.

  957. He told the preacher to shut up

  958. or he was going to physically hurt him.

  959. And then the preacher's just like, okay, bye.

  960. And then now it kind of makes sense

  961. why he does this stupid thing

  962. of calling out the much larger,

  963. more powerful northern kingdom of Israel

  964. that he's not going to be able to defeat.

  965. This is a much more serious enemy than Edom, okay?

  966. But he gets puffed up and prideful

  967. and God's just blinding him

  968. because God's not blessing him

  969. because he's not right with God.

  970. And so it says in verse number nine,

  971. here's the response of the king of Israel.

  972. Jehovah asked the king of Israel

  973. sent to Amaziah, king of Judah,

  974. saying the thistle that was in Lebanon

  975. sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon

  976. saying, give thy daughter to my son to wife.

  977. And they're passed by a wild beast

  978. that was in Lebanon and trod down the thistle.

  979. So he's giving him an analogy saying, look,

  980. the most impressive, powerful tree in Lebanon

  981. is the cedar.

  982. And then you just have some little stupid weed,

  983. some thistle.

  984. And he's saying basically, you're that little thistle

  985. and I'm the cedar.

  986. And like, how dare you call me out?

  987. You know, you're not worthy basically.

  988. So the northern king is just kind of just scoffing at him

  989. and acting like he's a fool.

  990. And then he says in verse number 10,

  991. thou hast indeed smitten Edom

  992. and thine heart hath lifted thee up.

  993. Glory of this, interior of the home.

  994. He said, look man, why don't you just be happy

  995. that you won against Edom?

  996. You know, this reminds me of the board game

  997. that we grew up playing risk.

  998. Who likes to play risk or you've played risk

  999. or you grew up playing risk?

  1000. Okay, lots of people.

1001. So you know, there's always that guy

1002. who he does real well on his turn,

1003. but he just doesn't know when to pass the dice.

1004. You know, you gotta just take your card

  1005. and pass the dice.

1006. And you know what, I'm gonna tell you

1007. my biggest strategy in the game of risk.

1008. And I know this is ruining my chances.

1009. This is against you, if I give you all my secrets.

1010. But let me tell you something, when I play risk,

1011. this is my rule, early in the game,

1012. you win one battle and you take your card.

1013. Cause you gotta win a battle to get the card.

1014. If you don't win any battles, you don't get the card.

1015. So you gotta do something on your turn

1016. so that you get the card.

1017. You win one territory and you take the card.

1018. Not two, not three, not one.

1019. You defeat Edom and you take your card.

1020. Okay, you don't say, oh hey, now let's,

1021. let's just take all of, you know, Kamchatka

1022. and let's go into Europe and what, no, it's not gonna work.

1023. And so the idea is that he's saying to him,

1024. look, just be humble, be apple, God has blessed you.

1025. But this is human nature, isn't it?

1026. To be greedy and nothing's ever enough.

1027. It's like God blesses you with something

1028. and you're just like, oh, that's not enough.

1029. I want more, more, more.

1030. You know, and this is how we all are as humans.

1031. We can't just eat one cookie.

1032. We gotta eat the whole box.

1033. You know, when it comes to Pringles,

1034. once you pop, you can't stop.

1035. Because people are greedy, that's why.

1036. And so the idea is that he needs to just quit

  1037. while he's ahead.

1038. And this is what the king of Israel

1039. is actually giving him good advice here.

1040. Just saying, look, you beat Edom, glory in this,

1041. have a party, celebrate, stay home,

1042. for why shouldest thou meddle to thy herd

1043. that thou shouldest fall even now in Judah with thee?

1044. Here are some other verses from Proverbs that support this.

1045. It's an honor for a man to cease from strife.

  1046. Right?

  1047. So if there's a fight brewing

1048. and you can get out of that physical fight, you should.

1049. There's no glory in going around

1050. and getting in fist fights.

  1051. Right?

1052. Or just meaningless, pointless arguments,

  1053. vein jangling, contention, strivings.

1054. He says, look, it's an honor for a man

1055. to cease from strife, but every fool will be meddling,

1056. meaning that fools are going out looking for fights.

  1057. They're getting in situations

1058. that don't even pertain to them just to pick a fight.

1059. Proverbs 17, 14, the beginning of strife

1060. is as when one leteth out water.

1061. Therefore, leave off contention before it be meddled with.

1062. Proverbs 25, 8, go not forth hastily to strive,

1063. lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof

1064. when thy neighbor has put thee to shame,

1065. meaning you don't know that you're going to win every fight.

1066. You know, and you get these guys that think they're so tough

1067. and they're so bad and whatever,

1068. one day they're going to mess with the wrong person.

1069. One day they're going to mess with someone

  1070. who's armed with a weapon.

1071. One day they're going to mess with somebody

1072. who has three friends that they didn't see.

1073. One day they're going to mess with someone

1074. who's highly trained in martial arts.

1075. Or one day they're going to mess with someone

  1076. who's a weak, pathetic, bozo

1077. who doesn't even know how to fight

  1078. and just gets lucky.

1079. Because the fight doesn't always go to the strong.

1080. The race isn't always to the swift, right?

1081. It's time and chance happens to them all.

1082. And you know what, some people will just land a lucky,

1083. they'll just swing the wildest haymaker

1084. and it just happens to connect.

  1085. Stranger things have happened.

1086. You don't know how it's going to end.

1087. The Bible says he that passeth by

1088. and meddled with strife not belonging to him

1089. is like one that takeeth a dog by the ears.

1090. You know, you're just asking for trouble.

1091. Don't go picking fights with people.

1092. Try to live at peace with all men as much as possible.

1093. But no, he doesn't take that advice.

1094. Amaziah would not hear it says in verse 11.

1095. Therefore, Jehoash king of Israel went up

1096. and he and Amaziah king of Judah

1097. looked one another in the face at Beth Shemesh

  1098. which belongedeth to Judah

1099. and Judah was put to the worst before Israel

1100. and they fled every man to their tent.

1101. So look, they even have the home turf advantage

1102. and they still get smoked by the Israelites.

1103. It says in verse 13, Jehoash king of Israel

1104. took Amaziah king of Judah,

1105. the son of Jehoash, the son of Isaiah

1106. at Beth Shemesh and came to Jerusalem

1107. and break down the wall of Jerusalem.

1108. I mean, look, he was coming off of a victory.

1109. He had defeated Edom, everything's good.

  1110. The economy's good, we're winning, it's great.

1111. But because of this stupid fight

1112. that he picks with the northern kingdom of Israel,

1113. what ends up happening is

1114. the wall of Jerusalem gets broken down.

1115. I mean, this is serious damage.

  1116. This is really bad.

1117. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down

1118. from the gate of Ephraim under the corner gate,

  1119. 400 qubits, okay, that's approximately 600 feet

1120. of the wall is broken down and destroyed.

1121. So it's just basically just wide open

1122. for people to come in.

1123. He took all the gold and silver

1124. and all the vessels that were found

1125. in the house of the Lord

1126. and in the treasures of the king's house

1127. and hostages and returned to Samaria.

1128. And you know, here's an analogy

1129. from history that comes to mind.

  1130. Adolf Hitler, okay?

1131. Adolf Hitler comes into power in Germany

  1132. in 1933 and in the 30s,

1133. he's basically recovering things in the economy

1134. and he's rebuilding the military

1135. and trying to get Germany respect.

1136. And he also was able to regain territory

1137. that had been lost in World War I.

1138. So he regains territory that was taken by France

  1139. without firing a shot.

1140. He's able to get some territory back over here

1141. and then he's able to bring Austria under Germany.

  1142. He's voted in.

1143. Basically, I think it was like 98% of Austrians

1144. voted to become part of Germany

1145. and then Hitler goes to Vienna

1146. and they're all cheering and woo, you know,

1147. he's just winning, winning, winning, winning, winning.

  1148. But you know what?

1149. He just was just so greedy

1150. that he's just never gonna stop, right?

1151. So it's like, instead of just being like,

1152. hey, I fixed the economy,

1153. I got back some territory from France,

1154. got back some territory from Czechoslovakia,

1155. got Austria back into the kingdom.

1156. I mean, if he would have just taken his card

1157. and passed the dice at that point,

1158. you know, things would have gone well for him

1159. but instead, what did he do?

1160. He just has to just keep going.

  1161. And you know what?

1162. He'd already explained all this in his book,

1163. Mein Kampf, where he'd already talked about

1164. how he wants to go east

1165. and take over all this territory in the East.

1166. He wasn't going to stop.

1167. And so he invades Poland

1168. and then that's a bridge too far.

  1169. He invades Poland.

1170. Next thing you know, World War II breaks out

1171. and it's the biggest bloodbath

1172. in the history of mankind

1173. with like 70 million people dead or something.

1174. You know, it's hard to even know the exact numbers,

  1175. 50 million, 70 million deaths,

  1176. just this insane bloodbath.

1177. Because Hitler is just greedy and insatiable

1178. just like other conquerors of the past

1179. who it's like they don't just conquer a little bit

  1180. and then stop.

1181. He's just gotta keep going.

1182. He's gotta invade Poland or whatever.

1183. You know, and you look back throughout history

1184. and you see the same pattern.

  1185. And you know what?

1186. The Bible talks about this

  1187. with Babylon and Nebuchadnezzar.

1188. And you know, what's funny is a lot of these modern,

1189. like conquerors and emperors and rulers

  1190. and furors and dictators,

1191. they'll often look back on men like,

1192. you know, Nebuchadnezzar and Alexander the Great

1193. and all these different people

1194. as like heroes and kindred spirits

1195. and you know, Napoleon Bonaparte or whoever, you know,

1196. and they look back on that.

1197. But it's like, if you look at what the Bible says

  1198. about Nebuchadnezzar, okay?

1199. In the book of Habakkuk,

1200. it says that he enlarges his desire as hell

1201. and is as death and can never be satisfied.

1202. But gathereth unto him all nations

1203. and heapeth unto him all peoples.

1204. It's saying that Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon,

1205. just has a desire to conquer

1206. and just wants all nations,

1207. wants to conquer and conquer

1208. and keep conquering and conquering, right?

1209. And it's like Alexander the Great

1210. just taking his troops and just keeps going

1211. until he's all the way in like India.

1212. You know, he's just conquering, conquering

1213. and all of his troops are like,

1214. bro, are we gonna go home?

1215. I mean, Alexander the Great led his troops.

1216. I think it was like seven years

  1217. without going back home.

1218. Like these people haven't been home in seven years.

1219. But it's just like more, more, more, greed, greed, more.

1220. You know, this is what we see, it's human nature.

  1221. It's a sinful human nature.

1222. And so what did he end up doing?

1223. He had all the success,

1224. but then when he stopped worshiping the Lord

1225. and starts, you know, doing idolatry,

1226. now all of a sudden God causes him

1227. to make this stupid decision of invading Poland,

1228. AKA invading the Northern Kingdom.

1229. And what ends up happening is

1230. he ends up destroying his whole nation,

  1231. just like, guess what?

1232. Germany was totally destroyed by World War II.

1233. You wanna know who lost millions and millions of lives?

  1234. Germany.

1235. Obviously, there were a lot of Soviet Union deaths,

1236. British deaths, American deaths, French deaths.

1237. But I mean, Germany got destroyed.

1238. I mean, you know, Dresden, Germany,

1239. even though it was used with conventional weapons,

1240. it was tantamount to being nuked.

1241. It was like the surface of the moon

1242. when they were done with it.

1243. It was tantamount to nuked, right?

1244. And I mean, at the end of the war,

1245. Germany is having to put teenagers

1246. and old men in the military

1247. because just that whole generation

1248. is just getting wiped out.

1249. I mean, he went from making Germany

1250. like top of the world at the end of the 30s

1251. where Germany is like thriving

1252. and Austria is begging to join,

1253. like please let us be part of Germany.

1254. He took it from the penthouse to the outhouse

  1255. because of greed.

1256. And that's exactly what Amaziah did.

1257. Amaziah is literally Hitler in armscare.

1258. But anyway, I'm saying like,

1259. Amaziah, if he would have quit while he was ahead

1260. and kept worshiping the Lord, it would have been great.

1261. But instead, he bites off more than he can choose.

1262. He ruins the whole country.

  1263. Jerusalem gets destroyed,

1264. just like Germany got destroyed.

1265. They lose the money, they lose the wall,

  1266. they lose everything.

  1267. They get destroyed.

1268. And then, what happens, ultimately, verse 19,

1269. now they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem.

1270. Why do you think they're mad at him?

1271. They're mad at him because he screwed everything up.

  1272. And ruined everything.

1273. So then they made a conspiracy against him

1274. which is exactly what happened to his dad.

1275. They made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem

1276. and he fled to Lakers.

1277. So he's like, okay, I'm not gonna let

1278. what happened to me happen to, or excuse me,

1279. I'm not gonna let what happened to dad happen to me.

1280. I'm gonna be smart and I'm gonna flee to Lakers, right?

  1281. But what happened?

1282. They sent to Lakers after him and slew him there.

1283. You know what's funny is people think they can do

1284. the same sins as their parents,

1285. but that they're not gonna get the punishment.

1286. Like, I remember, I had this guy that I worked with.

1287. His dad was a chain smoker and died of lung cancer.

  1288. And he was smoking.

1289. And I said, well, do you think that smoking

1290. had something to do with your dad dying of lung cancer?

  1291. He's like, no, I don't think so.

1292. Yeah, I'm pretty sure it probably did.

1293. And it's like, it just seems bizarre to me

1294. that like if your dad literally died of lung cancer

1295. as a smoker, wouldn't you think like, well, not me.

  1296. I'm not gonna smoke.

1297. But you know what they think like, well, I am gonna smoke,

1298. but it's just not gonna happen to me.

1299. It's like, well, if you do the same stuff

1300. that your parents did that messed up their lives,

1301. then you're probably gonna end up with the same results.

1302. And so again, we should learn from other people's bad

  1303. experiences.

1304. If we see other people that are getting out of church

1305. and getting divorced and messing up their lives

1306. and or we see people get into gambling.

1307. Next thing we know, they're in debt up to their eyeballs.

1308. We see people get into drinking.

1309. And next thing you know, they're an alcoholic

  1310. and they're a drug addict.

1311. When you see these things happening in other people,

1312. you gotta take a lesson from it.

1313. And not think, well, sure, dad got a DUI,

1314. but I'm not gonna get the DUI.

  1315. You probably are.

1316. Sure, you know, dad cheated on mom and ruined his marriage,

1317. but if I cheat on my wife, I'm gonna be okay.

1318. Or this pastor over here cheated on his wife,

1319. screwed up his ministry, screwed up his life,

1320. but I'm gonna get away with it

  1321. or something, what?

  1322. No, that's stupid.

1323. Learn from other people's mistakes.

1324. And you know what, when I see people crash and burn,

1325. I'm thinking like, what can I learn from this?

1326. And then I'm thinking like,

1327. I'm not gonna go down that road.

  1328. Don't wanna do that.

1329. Ain't gonna let that happen to me.

1330. Not me, I'm not gonna do that.

1331. And so here's the thing.

1332. How do we know what's right and wrong?

  1333. Cause the Bible says.

1334. So if somebody did something against the word of God

1335. and faced consequences, we should take a warning.

1336. Hey, I better follow what the Bible says here.

1337. And the Bible says not to make any graven images,

1338. so idolatry is off limits.

1339. And so the same thing that happened to his dad happened

1340. to him, even though he tried to escape it.

1341. He tried to say, I'm not gonna end up like dad.

  1342. I'm gonna go to Lake-ish.

1343. I'm gonna get out while I still can.

1344. Nope, they just follow him to Lake-ish

  1345. and get him anyway.

1346. And he ends up being killed.

  1347. I'm out of time.

1348. So I just wanted to say one last thing

1349. because I thought this was interesting.

1350. If you jump down to verse number 24,

1351. it says, and this is talking about the Northern Kingdom.

1352. We went back to the Northern Kingdom.

1353. So this is kind of like a little bonus feature.

1354. The sermon proper is over.

1355. It says, he did not which was evil

1356. in the side of the Lord.

1357. He departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam,

1358. the son of Nibad who made Israel descend.

1359. Verse 25, he restored the coast of Israel

1360. from the entering of Hamath under the sea of the plain

1361. according to the word of the Lord God of Israel,

1362. which he spake by the hand of his servant Jonah.

1363. Now this is interesting because this is the only mention

1364. of Jonah outside of the book of Jonah.

1365. Jonah the son of Amitai.

1366. That's how you know it's the same guy

1367. because Jonah in the book of Jonah

1368. is also the son of Amitai.

1369. The prophet, which was of Gathefer.

1370. For the Lord saw the affliction of Israel

1371. that it was very bitter.

  1372. Now don't miss this.

1373. The Lord saw the affliction of Israel

1374. that it was very bitter for there was not any shut up

1375. nor any left nor any helper for Israel.

1376. Now, stop and think about this.

1377. Everything in the Bible is there for a reason, right?

1378. This gives you a little backstory on the book of Jonah

1379. because it's like, okay, Jonah is preaching

1380. and ministering in a time

1381. when things are very bitter for Israel

1382. because of affliction, they're being afflicted.

1383. And so this kind of explains why later on

1384. Jonah is gonna be so bitter against the enemies of Israel

1385. and he just wants Nineveh to get destroyed

1386. and he wants no mercy for Israel or for Nineveh

1387. because he grew up and is preaching

1388. and ministering in a period

1389. where he's watching Israel suffer, right?

1390. And so the moral of the story here is

1391. that we are gonna go through things in our life,

1392. we're gonna see bad things happen to people around us,

1393. bad things are gonna happen to us

1394. and we can't let that make us become bitter

1395. and hateful toward entire groups of people, right?

1396. Because it's easy as you go through life

1397. and you see bad things happen

1398. and you get to a point where you just start hating

1399. entire groups of people and just being super bitter

1400. and super negative and that's what happened to Jonah

1401. because remember Jonah starts out

1402. and ends up both kind of bitter and messed up

1403. and I think Jonah was a great man of God.

1404. I think Jonah was an awesome man of God.

1405. It's just the book of Jonah is an episode in his life

1406. where he's in a messed up place and disobedient.

1407. But it doesn't make him a bad guy overall.

1408. He's obviously a man who's being greatly used by God

1409. and even in the story of Jonah, in the book of Jonah,

1410. I mean he's getting tons of people saved.

1411. I mean, I would love to crash and burn like Jonah

1412. and just get just thousands and thousands

1413. of salvations along the way, sounds great.

1414. I mean, so Jonah's not the worst person in the Bible is he?

  1415. He's a good guy who's going through a bad episode

1416. in the book of Jonah and yeah,

1417. the episode lasts for all four chapters

  1418. but it's still, it's a bad episode, but he's a good guy.

1419. When I get to heaven, I'm gonna hang out with Jonah

1420. and I'm gonna be like, I get it man.

1421. But the thing is, you don't wanna go down this road

1422. of being bitter and hateful because you know what?

1423. I remember, we were just talking about this

1424. the other day, I remember that after 9-11

1425. there was an attitude in the US

1426. of just, just kill all Arabs.

  1427. Do you remember that?

1428. I mean, there were people that talked that way.

1429. Just, and they were not joking

1430. and they were not using hyperbole.

1431. Who remembers people talking that way?

1432. Just saying, bomb them into oblivion,

1433. bomb them into the stone age, nuke them all,

  1434. destroy them all.

1435. Now look, I remember that was the attitude

1436. of a lot of people.

1437. Now people cooled down after a few weeks, months, years,

1438. maybe some people have never cooled down.

1439. But is that really right though?

1440. Like, look, I hate obviously Islam.

1441. I hate every false way.

1442. I hate Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Catholicism,

  1443. Mormonism, Calvinism.

1444. But the point is, I hate every false way

1445. but I'm not gonna say, hey, let's just murder

1446. millions of people, man, woman, boy, and girl.

1447. Because of what their relatives or friends

1448. or co-religionists did to us.

1449. Obviously that's going too far

1450. and here's the thing, we want people to be saved.

1451. We want people to be saved.

1452. Obviously we want justice, we want the guilty punished

1453. but here's the thing, at the end of the day though,

1454. is that killing innocent people is not justice.

1455. Killing man, woman, boy, and girl is not justified

1456. because you know what, Simeon and Levi,

1457. they were pretty mad about what happened

1458. to their sister in the book of Genesis

1459. and they went in and just killed the whole town.

1460. And God said that it was wrong,

1461. that they shouldn't have had that vengeful attitude

1462. that said, well, we're just gonna kill everybody

1463. because of what this one guy did.

1464. Oh, this one guy did, let's kill everybody.

1465. Just like Amaziah said, well, we're not gonna kill

1466. the children of the slayers.

1467. We're only gonna kill the murderers themselves.

1468. And so we wanna make sure that we always stay with

1469. biblical justice, biblical principles that we do write

1470. no matter what and that we don't get so bitter

1471. and negative that we're just like, you know what,

1472. I don't care, just kill them all and let God sort them out.

1473. That should never be our attitude.

  1474. Let's pray, it's enough water prayer.

1475. Father, we thank you so much for this great chapter Lord

1476. and thank you for this example of Amaziah

1477. foolishly making the same mistakes

1478. that his father, Joe Ash, made Lord

1479. and ending up the same way.

1480. And Lord, you showed us an example of somebody

1481. who followed in their father's footsteps for evil.

1482. But Lord, help us to realize that even if our ancestors

1483. or fathers or grandfathers have done evil,

1484. we don't have to go down that road.

1485. We can always follow your word

1486. and Lord, just help us not to get bitter like Jonah.

1487. Help us to continue to love people

1488. and give people a chance.

1489. Bless us now as we go our separate ways

1490. and in Jesus' name we pray amen.
