  1. Matthew 22.

  2. Matthew 22 is

  3. in the middle of the of the Tuesday before

  4. Friday's crucifixion and in your Bible.

  5. If you go back to Matthew 21, verse

    Matthew 21:18

  6. 18 or so.

  7. Somewhere around there, Matthew 21,

  8. all the way through Matthew 25.

  9. So all of those 21, two, three, four, four, 25 all happen on Tuesday.

  10. They all happen in one day.

  11. The Tuesday before Friday's crucifixion. So.

  12. So what were the passage of Scripture that we're in

  13. is a day.

  14. There's so much that happens on this Tuesday.

  15. And it really begins with Jesus

  16. broaching the subject of his authority and what we're in chapter 21.

  17. And what we're going to see in

  18. chapter 22 is four different groups that challenge his authority.

  19. And chapter 22, he's going to silence them all,

  20. and he's going to show them and prove to them that he has authority

  21. and the right to have authority over everything and everyone.

  22. And so here's the big idea for chapter 22.

  23. Jesus alone has the authority to define the kingdom,

  24. to define truth, to define obedience, and to define our relationship with God.

  25. He alone has that authority.

  26. As I was thinking about this issue of authority,

  27. as we get into chapter 22, I started thinking about the way different

  28. generations view authority because every generation it changes.

  29. We, each generation and each individual chooses

  30. what will be the authority in their lives and what will be allowed

  31. to have authority in their life.

  32. And it's different for, for for most people,

  33. and it's certainly different for each generation.

  34. So I thought, let me just let me just give you some symbols of authority.

  35. Right.

  36. What's that?

  37. A symbol of police who have authority.

  38. At least they should do being on their generation.

  39. They'll determine how much authority you'll give them

  40. about that judge who has what we.

  41. Absolutely.

  42. What about that doctor? He has what?

  43. The doctors have authority, right?

  44. By their training, by their expertise.

  45. What about that military?

  46. Certainly. Symbols of authority.

  47. What about that?

  48. It used to be a symbol of authority.

  49. No, it still is.

  50. It still is.

  51. Depending on what part of you're part of.

  52. What about that?

  53. It's a coach.

  54. Referee, a coach.

  55. It was interesting.

  56. At practice this last week,

  57. there was a young man

  58. I was trying to correct.

  59. I'm the coach, he's the player.

  60. And he started arguing with me about it.

  61. And I said, listen, you can argue all you want.

  62. I'm right.

  63. You're wrong.

  64. The story I heard about that.

  65. Yeah.

  66. Meta verified,

  67. you know, social media.

  68. What about that million likes,

  69. million views for some of us like that has no authority in my life.

  70. Others are. You like, that's the authority.

  71. And it changes generationally what

  72. we what we allow to have authority over us.

  73. And so for, for the baby boomers, those who are somewhere

  74. between 62 and 80 years old, there is a 40 in the position.

  75. There's an authority in the hierarchy.

  76. But that challenge by you, baby boomers is

  77. or that authority by you baby boomers is challenged a little bit.

  78. So. So

  79. for the baby boomer, the older people authority still exists.

  80. But authority comes not just from position but from accomplishment as well.

  81. And so you have to have a position, but that a position,

  82. you've got to be good at it.

  83. So the successful business person or the successful coach

  84. or the decorated military leader.

  85. So there's got to be the position

  86. with the accomplishment for the baby boom generation to say, yes,

  87. they have authority over me for the next generation.

  88. Those 46 to 61 years old,

  89. my generation is a bit more skeptical

  90. about positions of authority and hierarchies and institutions.

  91. In other words, we decide if you have the right

  92. to have authority over us and it will absolutely be challenged.

  93. And so for the baby, for the Gen X generation, competency

  94. is more important than titles. And so so

  95. we view it as you might be the boss, but it doesn't mean you're right.

  96. For the millennial generation,

  97. those who are 35, 30 to 45 years old or so,

  98. the authority they allow to have over them has to be based in relationship,

  99. in authenticity, in transparency and in participation.

  100. Like I have to know who you are.

  101. You can't be fake with me, and you need to invite me

  102. into this process so that I will allow you to have authority over me.

  103. For the Gen Z generation, those who are 14 to 29 years old

  104. or so pay attention now.

  105. The authority that you will allow to have over

  106. you has to first of all be relatable.

  107. They have to get you and you have to get them.

  108. There's there there's

  109. got to be a platform like you have to have it.

  110. Not necessarily a title, but you have to have a platform.

  111. There has to be

  112. peer validation, like all of my tribe agrees,

  113. and there has to be some type of lived experience.

  114. So I don't care about your title as long as we have a relationship

  115. and my tribe agrees and you have some experience that I can relate to,

  116. then you have the right to have some authority in my life.

  117. So for that generation, the Gen Z generation 14 to 29 years old

  118. influence becomes a symbol of authority, not a position.

  119. So if you have influence, that's why

  120. influencers are so important to this generation.

  121. Do you follow because they have influence now?

  122. They have authority.

  123. Doesn't matter.

  124. Position, title, expertise.

  125. They have influence.

  126. For Gen Alpha.

  127. Those who are 1 to 13 years old, the little ones

  128. authority in their life has

  129. been decentralized, and so there's not a single authority in their life.

  130. It's decentralized into multiple voices.

  131. And so for them, it can be teachers,

  132. it can be parents, it can be coaches, it can also be YouTube.

  133. It can also be TikTok, and it can also be their friend.

  134. And they all have equal say in equal authority.

  135. And so their response might be, well, my teacher says this,

  136. but YouTube says this and TikTok says this, and my friend says that,

  137. which is a very, very, very scary proposition.

  138. It's interesting to me to note, in this world of social media

  139. and influence, what just happened to the court system with meta.

  140. Meta was just slammed with an $18

  141. billion judgment against them meta being Facebook.

  142. If some of you don't aren't aware, that whole social media conglomerate

  143. $18 billion penalty because they know that their product

  144. is harmful to people, especially children,

  145. and so they've agreed to pay $18 billion

  146. over ten years and to some parameters around its use.

  147. Now, you might think $18 billion is a big judgment.

  148. Last year alone, the total revenue of meta was 200 billion.

  149. And so it's less than 10% of one year's total revenue paid out over ten years.

  150. And what they've agreed to is that it is unhealthy, unsafe and unwise

  151. for children to spend more than two hours

  152. a day on social media and to have any access to it after midnight.

  153. Please understand, my dear friends,

  154. when a tech company agrees

  155. and affirms that their product is harmful more than two hours

  156. a day, and any time after midnight, parents better start waking up

  157. when the tech company says our product is harmful

  158. for your kids, and they say this is how bad it is.

  159. The only reason they agreed to two hours a day and after midnight,

  160. because that's what they could get away with.

  161. So parents, we how you have to.

  162. And I've been preaching this from the day the whole thing broke.

  163. Ever since social media started showing up, I've been preaching parents in.

  164. So few are we're willing to pay attention to me.

  165. If the tech company says this is dangerous to your child,

  166. why would any parent allow them access to it?

  167. That has become the authority

  168. for a generation.

  169. And the only way that the kids are going to be protected from it,

  170. if it's modeled to them by their parents.

  171. And what we've done,

  172. we've opened up

  173. the the access to have authority over our lives and over our children

  174. by someone and something who should never have authority.

  175. And so Matthew 22

  176. speaks of this very issue of authority, and it gets very difficult for people

  177. to give their allegiance to Christ because he demands authority over

  178. every area.

  179. Is Jesus who says,

  180. I have the authority to define reality.

  181. Every generation

  182. will decide what they will allow to have authority over their lives.

  183. Jesus settles the issue.

  184. It says it resides in me.

  185. That's what Matthew 22 is all about, and that's why it's going

  186. to hit so hard this morning.

  187. Matthew 22

  188. is this interaction Jesus has with four different groups of people

  189. and these debates that they that they try to get him to go to get into.

  190. And Matthew 22 is not about.

  191. Jesus respecting Jesus teaching because he's so profound.

  192. It is about who he says he is.

  193. Jesus has identity, will determine his authority.

  194. And at the end of Matthew 22, he's going to ask the question, who do you say I am?

  195. Because who you say am will determine the authority that I have in your life.

  196. And if you haven't guessed it yet, I am the authority.

  197. That's what it's going to say.

  198. And so for some of us, it's going to be very difficult to here.

  199. But it will be good.

  200. And we need to hear we need to hear his words.

  201. And so Matthew 22, let me, let me just

  202. let me walk you through this

  203. in the beginning of the chapter, Jesus is going to say this.

  204. Jesus has authority to

  205. define how I enter the kingdom of God.

  206. He has the authority to find how I enter.

  207. This is how it reads.

  208. And again, Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying,

  209. the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast

  210. for his son, and sent his servants to call those

  211. who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come again.

  212. He sent other servants, saying, tell those who are invited, see,

  213. I've prepared my dinner.

  214. My oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything's ready.

  215. Come to the wedding feast.

  216. But they paid no attention and went off one to his farm, another to his business,

  217. while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them.

  218. So this is what the kingdom of heaven is like.

  219. The King has made all the arrangements for fellowship with him

  220. and to celebrate his son.

  221. And then he gave the invitation, come in and celebrate this with me.

  222. And the first invitation went out to a bunch of people,

  223. and it just simply says, it just simply says they wouldn't come.

  224. They were just uninterested.

  225. Pay attention now.

  226. This is the kingdom of heaven.

  227. The invitation has gone out and there are some people are just aren't interested.

  228. But like neither hot nor cold, there's like whatever,

  229. you know, I know religious people,

  230. whatever.

  231. And so the King sends out a second invitation, which was unheard of

  232. in this culture.

  233. If you turn down the invitation of the King

  234. the first time, he had probably put you to death, at least throw you in jail.

  235. So the fact that he offers a second invitation is indication

  236. that he is a kind, compassionate, and gracious King to continue

  237. inviting you into the King's presence to celebrate his Son.

  238. And so he gives a second invitation.

  239. And to the second invitation

  240. they paid no attention, and they went off

  241. to do other things.

  242. The second invitation goes out, and they're not indifferent.

  243. They just pay no attention. They just make fun of it.

  244. It's like a joke to them.

  245. This whole religion thing, this whole God thing, it's just a joke.

  246. And others, it's not a joke.

  247. They're just too busy.

  248. I got my job, I got my career, we got our,

  249. you know, our hobbies, we got travel, but we got all this other stuff going.

  250. We're just just.

  251. We got other stuff to do.

  252. Follow.

  253. And there's another group.

  254. The rest seized those who were intriguing them

  255. on behalf of the king to celebrate his son.

  256. The children shamefully and killed them.

  257. They weren't indifferent.

  258. They weren't busy. They were hostile to it.

  259. And so in response, verse seven, the king was angry

  260. and sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city.

  261. Then he said to his servants, the wedding feast is ready.

  262. But those invited were not worthy.

  263. Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding as many as you find.

  264. And those servants went out into the roads, and gathered all

  265. whom they found, both bad and good.

  266. So the winning hall was filled with guests.

  267. He said, listen, I'm done. I'm starting.

  268. I'm going to fight it like you'll find anybody you can.

  269. I don't care.

  270. Good, bad and good, bad and ugly. Get clean.

  271. I don't care who to just get people to.

  272. I just need people here to celebrate my son.

  273. And so they go out and they make this invitation.

  274. And I love that, because this is what it tells me,

  275. that we're invited into the fellowship

  276. of the King to celebrate his son, not based on who we are,

  277. but based on the father's compassion and his mercy

  278. and his grace in the honor of his son.

  279. This is a symbol.

  280. This is a statement of God's grace that his kingdom is filled with those

  281. who are invited, not based on who they are, but based on his graciousness

  282. and his compassion and his goodness and his mercy to celebrate His Son,

  283. because His son is worthy to be celebrated.

  284. So that's the scene.

  285. And all these people show up.

  286. Now watch what happens.

  287. But when the king came in and looked at the guest,

  288. he saw there a man who had no wedding garment, and he said to him, friend,

  289. how did you get in here without a wedding garment?

  290. And he was speechless.

  291. Then the king said to the attendance, bind him and buy

  292. him hand and foot, and cast him into outer darkness.

  293. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth,

  294. for many are called, but fewer chosen.

  295. So the King goes in the in the celebration.

  296. See these people celebrating his son, and he sees one of them

  297. that doesn't have wedding clothes on. Now here's what's happening.

  298. In that day, the King was responsible to give his guests clothing appropriate

  299. for the celebration, and especially these are invited in the last minute.

  300. They didn't have time to go home and change it, put on black tie stuff.

  301. And so the King was responsible just to give them wedding garments so

  302. that they were clothed in the appropriate covering to celebrate the son.

  303. Do you follow?

  304. And he sees one in there who got in, not being clothed

  305. by the father's garments, but in his own work.

  306. And he says, you don't belong here.

  307. All through

  308. Scripture when it talks about being clothed.

  309. That's the biblical reference, being clothed

  310. in the righteousness of God, not in our own work.

  311. Go back to Isaiah 61.

  312. I will greatly rejoice in the Lord.

  313. My soul shall exalt in my God, for he has what?

  314. Clothe me with what the garments of salvation.

  315. And he's covered me with the robe of righteousness.

  316. And so the kingdom of God is comprised of those that God has covered

  317. with his righteousness, not our own work.

  318. The Bible says in Second Corinthians five, for our sake

  319. he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him

  320. we might become the righteousness of God, clothed in his righteousness.

  321. And the kingdom of God is filled to those who,

  322. by the grace of God,

  323. have been invited into the fellowship of the kingdom to celebrate the

  324. son clothed in what God has done through Jesus on the cross.

  325. And there's this one person there who came in on his own merit.

  326. And the King says, that's not how we do it.

  327. You don't get in to my kingdom based on how you've clothed yourself.

  328. Do you follow?

  329. And that person, now it's too late,

  330. is thrown into outer darkness where the weeping and gnashing of teeth.

  331. Here's two responses.

  332. When we try to get into the kingdom, clothe

  333. in our own effort and merit, it doesn't work.

  334. It's not how it's designed, and there will be a day

  335. when it's too late to be clothed in the righteousness of Christ.

  336. When you stand before him.

  337. And there'll be two responses.

  338. One is weeping.

  339. There'll be people on the day who will realize what a full life been.

  340. What a fool I been.

  341. I was too busy, I was indifferent,

  342. I just didn't care enough.

  343. What a fool!

  344. I've denied his authority over my life.

  345. And they'll weep in desperation because they realized.

  346. What?

  347. What have I done?

  348. But another group will have gnashing their teeth.

  349. That's a biblical way of saying they are still vehemently demonically angry at God.

  350. How dare you?

  351. How could you do this to me?

  352. What right do you have to assert this kind of authority over my soul?

  353. Can you imagine?

  354. So Jesus says,

  355. I have the authority to determine how you enter my kingdom.

  356. This by my righteousness, not by your effort.

  357. And then he says this

  358. I have the authority to determine what you owe the kingdom.

  359. He says, I have the authority to determine what's owed.

  360. Verses 15 through 22.

  361. Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his words,

  362. and they sent their disciples to him, along

  363. with the Herodians, saying, teacher, we know that you are true

  364. and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone's

  365. opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances.

  366. Tell us then, what do you think?

  367. Is it lawful to be taxes to Caesar or not?

  368. You're going to see four groups in Matthew 22 the Pharisees,

  369. the Herodians, the Sadducees, and the lawyers.

  370. And so this first two groups, the Pharisees and the Herodians, come

  371. to Jesus. And they think, we don't like what you're saying.

  372. What do you mean?

  373. Our righteous work doesn't get us into the king's banquet hall?

  374. You're ridiculous. We are Jews.

  375. We're God's chosen people, and we're righteous religious people.

  376. We deserve to get in. He says, no, you don't.

  377. And so they plot together like we can't handle what he's saying.

  378. We've got to kill him.

  379. We got to discredit him and kill him.

  380. And so the Pharisees and the Herodians get together, and all the Pharisees

  381. were the conservatives of their of their day.

  382. They believed in the literacy of Scripture.

  383. They were pro-Israel.

  384. They were conservative in their living.

  385. They were the conservative group.

  386. The Herodians were fans of Herod, who was a puppet king of Rome.

  387. The Pharisees hated Rome.

  388. The Herodians loved Rome.

  389. And so now these two were diametrically opposed

  390. to each other, have a common enemy and a common enemy.

  391. It makes strange bedfellows.

  392. So the Pharisees go to the Herodians.

  393. The audience wanted to support Rome.

  394. They didn't mind taxes.

  395. And so they asked the question, is it lawful to taxes to Caesar?

  396. Because the Herodians think we got him.

  397. If he says, no, it's not lawful, it'll be taxes to Caesar.

  398. Like the Pharisees say.

  399. The zealots of the Pharisees would say that if you pay taxes to Caesar,

  400. you are sending Caesar to be your God.

  401. It's idolatry, like they were vehemently opposed to that.

  402. So if Jesus says, if Jesus says yes, pay taxes,

  403. Caesar, he's denying the sovereignty of God over Israel.

  404. If he says no, don't pay taxes, Caesar.

  405. Now he set himself up against the government of Rome.

  406. And so they they think we got him.

  407. He's in a no win situation. We're going to best him.

  408. Well, we learned last week that Jesus was the mover of mountains

  409. who could take these incredible, difficult mysteries and unravel them

  410. and make them make sense.

  411. And so his response, he says, you think you got me?

  412. Is it lawful?

  413. They weren't talking about legal.

  414. They were talking about spiritually acceptable.

  415. Is it okay because some believe that by paying taxes, the Rome they were

  416. they were acknowledging the the lordship of Caesar over their lives.

  417. It's an act of idolatry.

  418. It's like you want to talk about that. Okay.

  419. So this way says Jesus said, aware of their malice.

  420. They started by flattery.

  421. Look, we know you don't respect to people.

  422. You know, you just you speak the truth.

  423. You're you're so righteous and and and you people can't win you over.

  424. Well, that's what they're trying to do. But.

  425. And he calls them on it.

  426. But you here I see right through who you are.

  427. Your flattery means nothing to me

  428. to to think I'm so shallow that I would give given over to your flattery.

  429. It's ridiculous.

  430. Aware of their mouth says.

  431. Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites?

  432. Show me the coin for the tax. And they brought him a denarius.

  433. And Jesus said to them,

  434. whose likeness is and inscription is this they said, Caesar's.

  435. Then he said to them, therefore render to Caesar

  436. the things that are Caesar's, and the gods the things that are gods.

  437. When they heard it, they marveled, and they left him and went away.

  438. Here's what he's saying. He's saying, fine. You want to talk about taxes?

  439. Bring me the coin. The coin was a Daenerys coin.

  440. And once a year, every citizen of Roman Empire

  441. had to pay a denarius for the right to breathe Roman air.

  442. And so he says, fine, if that's the tax system we live in.

  443. I didn't come to abolish the tax system.

  444. I didn't come to remake the tax system.

  445. If it's oppressive, whatever, we're citizens, we got to pay our tax.

  446. So says bring me the Daenerys.

  447. So someone brought them a little coins, a little silver coin, and he said,

  448. who's image?

  449. Caesar's? Because, you know, like us, right?

  450. Our money has the pictures of who on it.

  451. Our presidents.

  452. Same thing back then, he said, if it bears Caesar's image, give it back to him.

  453. Don't care if you like the taxes or not.

  454. That's not the point.

  455. The point is, you're a citizen of this empire, so you pay your taxes.

  456. But then he says this.

  457. In essence, he says, and whatever bears God's image

  458. that belongs to God.

  459. Go back to Genesis one chapter,

  460. chapter one, verses 2020, 2627.

  461. God says, let us make man in our image,

  462. in the image of God, let us make male and female.

  463. What he's saying is this

  464. taxes or taxes?

  465. But you bear the image of God.

  466. And so he says, I have the right and the authority to define

  467. what you owe the kingdom and what you owe the kingdom, because you bear

  468. the image of God is your very being.

  469. Do you understand?

  470. And they knew that they were bested.

  471. They wanted to trap him.

  472. He said, no, no, no, I'm going to, I'm going to, I'm going to.

  473. I don't want to talk about governmental oversight.

  474. I want to talk about God's rulership.

  475. Human and human alone bear the image of God.

  476. Plants don't. And animals don't.

  477. You and I are the only creatures made.

  478. Angels don't.

  479. The only creatures made in the image of God as me and you.

  480. And God says, if you.

  481. Jesus says, if you bear his image,

  482. every

  483. selling, your being,

  484. every decision, every move belongs to him.

  485. You give it back.

  486. Romans 12 one

  487. I appeal to you there for brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God,

  488. to present your bodies as a living sacrifice,

  489. holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

  490. Your act of worship is not emotionalism.

  491. It's not exuberance.

  492. It is the giving of your whole self to the God

  493. who has authority over your life because you bear his image.

  494. Follow.

  495. So Jesus says, listen, I have the authority to determine who

  496. and how you enter the kingdom,

  497. and I have the authority over what you owe the kingdom.

  498. And then he says this I have the authority

  499. to find what scriptures mean.

  500. And so the next group, the Sadducees, that same day, this is all on Tuesday,

  501. the Sadducees came to him who say there is no resurrection.

  502. And they asked him a question, saying, Teacher Moses said,

  503. if a man dies having no children,

  504. his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring from his brother.

  505. Now there were seven brothers among us.

  506. The first married and died having no offspring left,

  507. left his wife to his brother, so the second and third

  508. down to the seventh after them all the woman died in the resurrection.

  509. Therefore, of the seven whose wife will she be?

  510. For they all had her.

  511. Here's what's going on. The Sadducees,

  512. this other group of religious leaders, they were the liberal group.

  513. They didn't believe in miracles.

  514. They didn't believe in resurrection.

  515. They believed the science only what could be proven scientifically.

  516. They didn't believe all the scriptures.

  517. They just believe the first five books that we know them

  518. Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, numbers, Deuteronomy.

  519. And they were the liberal part of this religious group.

  520. And so they didn't believe the resurrection.

  521. So in order to trap Jesus, they asked him a resurrection question,

  522. hoping that he'll say, well, you're right.

  523. I guess resurrection doesn't make any sense.

  524. You're right.

  525. There is no resurrection, thereby

  526. ruining everything that Jesus taught about the resurrection

  527. and the doctrine of Scripture, about the resurrection.

  528. So this is the question according to their law

  529. in the first five books of the Bible, the leverage vow.

  530. If a man marries a woman and they don't have babies, then that

  531. woman becomes the property of his brother so that that family line can have babies.

  532. If that one dies, it goes to the next brother.

  533. So they come up with this stupid hypothetical.

  534. Well, let's say that happened seven times and she still doesn't have a baby.

  535. Then she dies.

  536. Now all seven husbands and a woman are in the resurrection.

  537. Whose wife is she?

  538. They don't believe in the resurrection, but they're trying to stick it to Jesus.

  539. Do you see what I'm saying?

  540. And so Jesus is like, you guys are idiots.

  541. That's that's all.

  542. I just like you don't get a redefined scripture.

  543. The doctrine of the resurrection has been one of the most foundational doctrines

  544. in all of Scripture, from beginning to end.

  545. You don't get to redefine it.

  546. And so he says, your problem

  547. is because you're you're ignorant both to the Bible and to the power of God.

  548. That's what he says, he says.

  549. Jesus answered them, you are wrong.

  550. He's not gentle with these guys like your mom.

  551. You don't argue with me all you want.

  552. You're wrong.

  553. Because you don't know neither the scriptures nor the power of God.

  554. For in the resurrection they neither Mary nor a given a marriage.

  555. But they're like angels in heaven.

  556. And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you?

  557. By God?

  558. I am the God of Abraham and Isaac, and of Jacob.

  559. He's not the God of the dead, but of the living. And the crowd heard it.

  560. They were astonished as his teaching he said, listen,

  561. your problem is because you don't understand the Bible.

  562. You don't understand Scripture.

  563. You don't know the power of God.

  564. In the resurrection.

  565. There is no marriage. You're like the angels.

  566. Please don't misunderstand.

  567. We said he doesn't say we become angels.

  568. Don't don't ever believe.

  569. Well, they died because God needed another angel that isn't so unbiblical.

  570. It's not even funny.

  571. God made angels. He made people.

  572. People don't become angels when they die.

  573. Do we understand that? Yeah.

  574. We're like the angels in that there's no more death

  575. and there's no need to recreate anymore, okay?

  576. But there's no marriage in heaven.

  577. Like there's no ceremonies in heaven.

  578. Some of you are thinking finally. And get out.

  579. Don't get.

  580. I mean, it's like, just just put this straight.

  581. The point is this.

  582. God's not a dead god, and his people aren't dead in a grave.

  583. God said, I am the God currently, right now

  584. of Abraham, right now of Isaac, right now of Jacob.

  585. Right now. They're not dead.

  586. They might pass from this earth, but they're not dead. Why?

  587. Because the doctrine of the resurrection is one of the most foundational doctrines

  588. in all of Scripture.

  589. And just because they didn't agree with it,

  590. because they didn't like it, because they didn't understand it, doesn't

  591. mean that they get to redefine it.

  592. And Jesus says,

  593. I have authority to define what scriptures mean.

  594. That is still the case.

  595. And just because we don't understand or like what the Bible says,

  596. doesn't mean we have the authority to redefine what it means.

  597. He has authority.

  598. This is so important.

  599. If it's true, it's not new.

  600. If it's new, it's not true.

  601. Don't let anybody redefine what the Bible says.

  602. All Scripture is breathe out by God and profitable for teaching,

  603. reproof, for correction, and for training and righteousness.

  604. I hear all the times, well, Jesus never really spoke to that very thing.

  605. Well, the Bible says that all scriptures breathed out by God,

  606. so it's all God's Word with this Old Testament.

  607. It doesn't matter whether Paul said that Jesus said it.

  608. Moses.

  609. All scriptures breathed out by God.

  610. We don't have the authority

  611. to reinterpret Scripture just because it doesn't fit our agenda

  612. just says, look, I have the authority to determine how you get into my kingdom.

  613. I have the authority of what you owe

  614. the kingdom, and I have the authority to determine what scriptures mean.

  615. And then he says, and I have the authority to determine what matters most.

  616. But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees,

  617. they gathered together, and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question

  618. to test him. Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?

  619. And he said, you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,

  620. and with all your soul, with all your mind.

  621. This is the greatest and first commandment,

  622. and the second is like it you shall love your neighbor as yourself.

  623. All these two commandments depend on.

  624. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.

  625. So now they get the lawyers involved

  626. and, and and in their law they had 613 commands of God,

  627. 365 negative ones, one negative command for every day of the year.

  628. You better not, you better not, you better not.

  629. And 248 positive ones.

  630. You're better, you're better, you're better.

  631. So out of all those is so which one is the greatest one?

  632. And Jesus says, look,

  633. let me take you back to what you believe in the Old Testament.

  634. Let me take you away.

  635. Back then, this has been God's standard from day one.

  636. Deuteronomy six you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,

  637. and with all your soul, and with all your mind.

  638. You've

  639. made it into something that was never intended to be.

  640. You added all this stuff to it.

  641. And not only that, back to Leviticus.

  642. You shall not take vengeance or bear grudge

  643. against the sons of your own people.

  644. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

  645. I'm the Lord.

  646. I have authority you to find what is the greatest and most important,

  647. what's the priority?

  648. And it's loving God and love in other people.

  649. That's where this whole thing, this is what it's about,

  650. is to love God completely and love your neighbor rightly.

  651. I have the authority to find what matters most,

  652. and all of the law and all the prophets.

  653. Love the Lord your God and love your neighbor.

  654. Though

  655. vertical in the horizontal hangs on the cross

  656. you follow.

  657. This is what matters most.

  658. Now, while the Pharisees

  659. were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question.

  660. Well, let me say this when that when the verse says, love the Lord

  661. with our heart, soul and mind, like

  662. the heart is the seat of emotion,

  663. your soul, all your, your, your, your, your desires.

  664. But he says, your mind.

  665. Love the Lord your God with all your mind.

  666. This is the one that gets lost in people.

  667. We think loving God has to do with the emotion of it

  668. and the experience of an expression of it, and the command

  669. is to also love God with your engage your brain.

  670. That's what the Scripture says.

  671. Like in use this, use your intellect over and over and over through Scripture.

  672. Psalm one,

  673. verse two, Psalm 119, verses 15 to 16.

    Psalms 119:15–16

  674. Like, engage your brain.

  675. Meditate, think about it, ponder it.

  676. We must.

  677. The disciple must engage their brain in learning the Bible

  678. and learning doctrine.

  679. This is so important for us.

  680. If you want to love more deeply,

  681. you must know more fully.

  682. Do you understand this?

  683. The more you know

  684. your spouse, the deeper your love can be.

  685. It's the same thing with God.

  686. You want to love God more.

  687. Know him deeper.

  688. Love him with your mind.

  689. Study.

  690. And then Jesus says, I have the

  691. the authority to find who I am.

  692. Now. While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question.

  693. He said, look, I'm not going to let you ask me one more question.

  694. You've changed my authority enough.

  695. I have the authority. I am the authority.

  696. So he asked them a question what do you think about the Christ?

  697. Whose son is he? They said to him, the Son of David.

  698. He said to them, how is it then, that David, in the spirit of God,

  699. calls

  700. him Lord, saying, and then he quotes Psalm 110, the Lord said to my Lord,

  701. sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.

  702. If David if then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?

  703. And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day

  704. did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.

  705. He had just silenced them all. Here's what he said.

  706. He said, who's who's who is this Messiah?

  707. They said, was this Son of David all the Old Testament say that

  708. they thought from the genealogy of David, like he's going to come

  709. from that genealogical line.

  710. Jesus is saying, yes, but more than yes,

  711. he is God.

  712. Because how can David, who comes

  713. before the Messiah, call that Messiah Lord over him?

  714. I am the Messiah, and I am before David.

  715. I am,

  716. and because I am, I have authority over all things.

  717. And they realize that their concept of the Messiah was something the Messiah wasn't

  718. there.

  719. Realizing now you're claiming to be that Messiah,

  720. and so you're claiming that you are Lord over all things.

  721. You have authority over all things, and that set them up.

  722. They knew they couldn't

  723. ask him any more questions, and they knew they had to kill him.

  724. Everything in Matthew 22 is designed

  725. by Jesus to set the dominoes in place,

  726. to challenge every structure, every everything that they have set up

  727. for their own authority

  728. over their lives, to challenge and to destroy and dismantle all of that

  729. so that the dominoes will fall, so they will become so our way.

  730. They will petition Rome to kill him.

  731. Because when Jesus asserts, I am the authority over your life,

  732. you're either going to submit to it or you're going to crucify him.

  733. And the same thing goes for us today.

  734. Jesus has just asserted,

  735. I have to determine how you get into the kingdom and who gets in.

  736. I have the authority to determine what you owe the kingdom.

  737. I have the authority to determine what scriptures actually mean.

  738. I have the authority to determine what matters

  739. most, and I have the authority to determine who I am.

  740. You're either going to submit to that, or you're going to say, go away with you,

  741. Christ.

  742. The same thing.

  743. We don't

  744. get to decide who Jesus ought to be.

  745. We must decide whether we believe who he says he is.

  746. Simon Peter finally got it.

  747. You are the Christ, the son of the living God.

  748. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life.

  749. Nobody comes the father but through me.

  750. You don't get to decide who you think I am.

  751. You have to respond to who I am.

  752. See, Matthew 22 is not

  753. a collection of debates that Jesus wins because he's smarter than everybody else.

  754. That's not what this is.

  755. At every challenge, Jesus has demonstrated

  756. that he has authority over all things and all people.

  757. That's what this is.

  758. And the one who has been asked questions now ask the question.

  759. And the implication of that answer has profound resonance.

  760. See, here's let me let me finish with this.

  761. Here's what we have to understand.

  762. Jesus is not asking to have a place in my life.

  763. Jesus has authority to define every part of my life.

  764. Jesus has not asked

  765. to be a part of your world.

  766. He has come and said, I have authority over every portion of it.

  767. And some of us today

  768. as well, many as we are, sit in this place.

  769. Having given Jesus a place in my life,

  770. and I have chosen the authority over what places

  771. Jesus will be, in what places he won't be.

  772. And Jesus says, that is not who I am,

  773. and that is not the way of the kingdom.

  774. I'm not asking to be a part of your life

  775. if you want to call yourself a disciple.

  776. I'm demanding.

  777. I have authority over every part of it.

  778. So when it comes down to me and your friend group, I win.

  779. When it comes down to me and your schedule, I win.

  780. When it comes down to me and your money, I win.

  781. When it comes down to me and your goals, I win.

  782. When it comes down to me and your embarrassment of me, I win.

  783. That's what he's saying.

  784. What do you think Jesus would have said to those

  785. after he said, follow me in the New Testament?

  786. What do you think Jesus would have said to those if they said, you know what?

  787. Yeah, like I want your salvation, but I'm not going to do everything you say.

  788. What do you think you would have said?

  789. He would have said, you're not my follower,

  790. then.

  791. You can't accept my salvation and not follow everything I say.

  792. You're not a follower.

  793. And if that's what he would have said to them, then guess what he says to us now.

  794. So we have to answer the same question.

  795. Who do you say Jesus is?

  796. Is he the one you've looked for salvation?

  797. And then you've determined what else he gets to have say over?

  798. Or are you one who says he is Lord over all areas?

  799. And I live in submission to him?

  800. That's the question.

  801. And I leave it

  802. between you and the Holy Spirit to answer that question.

  803. And on those of us for whom conviction

  804. needs to fall, I pray it falls hard,

  805. and we repent

  806. of how we've let Jesus be part of our life

  807. and not Lord over at all.

  808. I pray that conviction falls hard

  809. not to break us, but so that we're made new

  810. and in repentance we say, father, I'm sorry.

  811. I give you my whole self.

  812. All my allegiance is yours above all things redirect.

  813. And all of my life it's all yours.

  814. I want you to pray with me.

  815. Father, thank you

  816. that your love is so profound.

  817. Thank you for your mercy and your grace.

  818. That is new for us every morning.

  819. Thank you for your patience.

  820. Thank you for your goodness.

  821. And thank you for your authority.

  822. I pray in this place that we would humble ourselves,

  823. that we would repent,

  824. and that we would accept the authority

  825. that you have over our lives.

  826. Friends, I want to invite you in this moment

  827. to accept the authority that Jesus has asserted.

  828. And in repentance say, father, I'm sorry I've made you a part of my life,

  829. but you have not received my full allegiance, and you deserve it.

  830. So I submit all of my life to you. You.

  831. I give you a thought.

  832. I accept the authority of you over my life.

  833. Every part of it.

  834. Every part of it.

  835. Father, I honor your son.

  836. Forgive me of my sin.

  837. Give me an incredible disdain for my sin.

  838. Give me an increased desire

  839. to rid myself of it.

  840. To choose a holy life, a righteous life.

  841. And father, do what I cannot do in me, which is to transform

  842. me and make me new.

  843. I give myself to you, and your name I pray.

  844. Amen.

  845. Friends, listen.

  846. I believe that some here

  847. are repenting and in repentance.

  848. I want to just encourage you.

  849. Continue pressing into that.

  850. Let the Holy Spirit do what he wants to do.

  851. And if any of you want to pray with somebody,

  852. just let us pray and agree with you in this way

  853. for your repentance, your renewal, your rejuvenation, for God's hand

  854. to be in there and on there, making things new that have been dead and old.

  855. Humble yourself.

  856. Humble yourself.

  857. Let's see.
