  1. I want to invite your attention to a passage is found in John,

  2. the eighteenth chapter and I want to begin reading there in

  3. verse 1. We're just notice these two

  4. verses for our introduction. John chapter 18, beginning in

    John 18 chapter mention

  5. verse 1, when Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with

  6. his disciples, over the brook Kidron, where there was a garden

  7. where he was there with his disciples and Judas, who

  8. betrayed him also knew the place for Jesus often met there with

  9. his His disciples for a little while.

  10. I want to talk on the subject, I've simply entitled Gethsemane

  11. will notice our remarks from John's account when Jesus was

  12. arrested in the garden apart from the cross.

  13. No greater Agony has ever been experienced by any being that

  14. has ever lived in this world in human form.

  15. No man has ever suffered this way.

  16. In fact, this is the second greatest Agony that our Lord

  17. would experience. And obviously, the first being

  18. that, which is to come on the cross itself.

  19. But this is the second great Agony.

  20. This is the Apex of his life of sorrow and grief.

  21. This is the high point of torturous suffering.

  22. This is the night when Jesus anticipates drinking the cup of

  23. divine wrath which would be his in full.

  24. At the cross. And again, his sorrow was so

  25. severe. And the struggle was so massive.

  26. That the Bible says that his sweat was, as it were great

  27. drops of blood falling to the ground.

  28. Now, if we look at the other gospel accounts, we see the

  29. human suffering side of Jesus. I don't want to minimize the

  30. human suffering side. Jesus was in tremendous Agony,

  31. terrible. It was for the Son of God to go

  32. through the things that he did. Did the night in which before he

  33. would be crucified on a Roman cross for the sins of the world.

  34. Earlier on in our meeting we talked about the fact that the

  35. Bible describes Jesus as the Messiah as the son of man and

  36. also as the Son of God obviously he's the son of man, meaning

  37. that our Messiah, Our Savior was fully human, there was a human

  38. side to the messiahship but he's the son of God meaning.

  39. There's the Divine side of his messiahship and it seems as

  40. though if you look at the other gospel accounts, not John the

  41. other ones. It seems as though they describe

  42. the human side with the human suffering and John presents

  43. something else. The Divine side, the deity of

  44. Jesus Christ. Now, all of these things really

  45. point to the supremacy of Jesus Christ and it's done.

  46. So with for preemption Eminent features.

  47. Now let me just say we're going to spend more time on number one

  48. then we are the rest of them and by the time we get to number 4,

  49. it's going to be actually in the conclusion.

  50. So don't think that because we're spending so much time on

  51. number one, we're going to be here all day and night we're

  52. just going to spend more time on number one, the first preeminent

  53. feature that exalts Jesus to the highest in the event of The

  54. Garden of Gethsemane, was his Supreme.

  55. Courage, his courage is certainly seen and his

  56. willingness to go to the cross. You know, I'll tell you it's

  57. courageous when somebody would die for a cause that we call

  58. that a hero when somebody would die for a cause we also find

  59. that if someone is tremendously create a courageous because he's

  60. willing to be martyred for a truth that he is he refuses to

  61. reject. We call that Noble but purpose

  62. in your mind. Jesus think about Jesus here.

  63. Jesus is about to be have all of his Purity and all of his

  64. sinlessness. Has violated and bear the sin of

  65. every man that has ever lived. He would be on the cross

  66. abandoned by God. And he would say those words, my

  67. God, my God. Why hast Thou, forsaken?

  68. Me or is another translation? Renders it.

  69. My God, my God. Why are you so far from helping

  70. me? This is courage, this is

  71. infinite Supreme courage and Jesus sets, his face to go to

  72. the cross and does so Undaunted and he does.

  73. So without hesitation, please understand.

  74. This, though, when they came to arrest Jesus, He was not

  75. tricked, he was not trapped, and he was not surprised.

  76. Please understand that it even magnifies his courage even more.

  77. So he wasn't tricked. He wasn't trapped and he wasn't

  78. surprised. Notice verse one.

  79. Now is I'll put it on the screen.

  80. Verse 1, John 18, and verse 1. When Jesus had spoken these

  81. words he went out with his disciples.

  82. Now obviously in some translations say he went forth

  83. but evidently what it's talking about.

  84. About when he finished speaking, the words of the prayer in the

  85. 17th chapter, he's going to go with those disciples.

  86. He's going to leave that Upper Room.

  87. He's going to leave the city of Jerusalem and he's going to

  88. cross a little Brook called Kidron, and he's going to go a

  89. place there that we simply call The Garden of Gethsemane.

  90. You know, it was his custom to retire there.

  91. It's a place that he often went there.

  92. In fact, the Bible says, in John Chapter 7, Very end of the

    John 7 chapter mention

  93. chapter. It says this, every man went to

  94. his own house, but then the beginning of chapter 8, says,

  95. and Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

  96. This was the closest thing to home that the Lord had.

  97. Do you remember when Jesus was speaking to that?

  98. Scribe who said, I will follow you wherever you go.

  99. And Jesus said, foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests,

  100. but the son of man has nowhere to lay his head early on in the

  101. This meeting we talked about what that means.

  102. It meant that Jesus did not have the Creature Comforts of life.

  103. That even the animals. Have not only that, he didn't

  104. have a place of permanence in this world.

  105. And that's what he was talking about.

  106. Oftentimes though, he went to this place called The Garden.

  107. He went to this place in the Mount of Olives.

  108. Now, there were other times that he might go out a little ways

  109. crossed a little row. Road, go around a little Hill.

  110. I'm told and go to the place called Bethany and be there with

  111. dear friends, Mary and Martha, but not on this night, this was

  112. time for Gethsemane. I want you to understand that,

  113. Jesus knew exactly what was going to happen.

  114. Each. And every thing that did happen,

  115. he not only, he not only knew, but he also planned every

  116. detail. Now, first of all, there's

  117. somebody else that also new. And I think this is very Very

  118. important there. Somebody else that knew that

  119. Jesus was going to go there, and it was the betrayer, it was

  120. Judas Iscariot when we think about the relationship between

  121. Jesus and Judas, there's actually a picture in the Old

  122. Testament of two other characters that kind of fit that

  123. description or that similar picture.

  124. And because of that, it actually brings up a very interesting

  125. point about prophecy. Let me just say, There's two

  126. kinds of Prophecy. Number one, there's verbal

  127. predictive, propers prophecy. And number two, there is typical

  128. prophecy verbal. Predictive prophecy, is a verbal

  129. prediction of something that's going to happen later, for

  130. example, in Isaiah 9:6 For unto us.

    Isaiah 9:6

  131. A child is born unto us a son is given.

  132. That is a verbal prediction that's going to be fulfilled

  133. later about Jesus Christ. Iced, we understand that, but

  134. typical prophecy is different typical.

  135. Prophecy is prophecy in types. For example, every Old

  136. Testament, sacrifice was a picture of Jesus, the ultimate

  137. and final sacrifice, he would be for the world.

  138. Now sometimes men or characters, also typified Christ, for

  139. example, about Moses, Moses typified.

  140. Jesus in that Moses was the deliverer to deliver God's

  141. people. The children of Israel out of

  142. Egyptian bondage. Jesus is the Fulfillment of

  143. that, in that he is the ultimate fulfillment.

  144. He is the ultimate deliverer deliver to deliver people out of

  145. the bondage of sin. What about Joseph?

  146. You know, a preacher. One time said that he counted

  147. over 100 points of likeness between the life of Joseph.

  148. If and the life of Jesus, one of which would be how he was

  149. betrayed and how he was sold. And the Bible would describe

  150. that his brothers sold him into slavery for 20 pieces of silver.

  151. The price of a slave in like fashion, Jesus was sold and

  152. betrayed for 30 pieces of silver, the price of a slave.

  153. Now, there were also characters that were tip that typified

  154. Jesus, in a, in an event, Like Isaac.

  155. When God told Abraham, take thy son, thine only son, Isaac and

  156. take him to a place that I will tell thee and offer him as a

  157. sacrifice unto me. Do you remember as they went on

  158. and they spent about three days on this journey, you know, in

  159. the mind of Abraham, the very second that he purposed to go

  160. and obey, God and offer Isaac as a sacrifice when that three-day

  161. period started in his mind as he began for three days.

  162. Ways, Isaac was already sacrificed.

  163. You know what happened? Three days later, God stayed his

  164. hand and he received him back in like fashion.

  165. Jesus was nailed to a Roman cross, he was buried.

  166. And on the third day, guess what?

  167. He received him back. There's something else, too.

  168. You know, when Isaac carried the wood that he would be sacrificed

  169. on. Can you imagine that having

  170. someone carry or something that you're going to sacrifice a

  171. blood sacrifice? And you're going to carry the

  172. wood that you're going to be sacrificed on.

  173. That's exactly what Isaac did and, you know, that typified

  174. Jesus. Because guess what?

  175. Jesus also carried the wood that he would be sacrificed on as

  176. well. All of this is Go prophecy.

  177. Now I said all that to say this, there's a picture of the

  178. relationship between Jesus and Judas.

  179. In the Old Testament. It's found in the book of

  180. second, Samuel chapter 15. We're talking about King David

  181. and the Bible says that David had a familiar friend and his

  182. name was a hit the fell. Now we know the story Absalom,

  183. the bad son of David decides to rise up against David and all of

  184. that, you know what happened familiar Friend by the name of a

  185. hit, the fill lifted up his heel against David as it were and

  186. went with Absalom. Do you know where David went?

  187. David crossed, the Little Brook. At Kidron.

  188. And he went to the Mount of Olives with his faithful

  189. followers in like fashion. Judas, lifted up his heel

  190. against Christ Judas. Being a familiar friend, he did

  191. the very same thing, you know what Jesus did he crossed the

  192. Little Brook Kidron and he went into the Mount of Olives.

  193. With his followers. Why did Jesus go there if he

  194. knew that, all of that was going to happen?

  195. Why did he do that? The Mount of Olives are the get,

  196. or The Garden of Gethsemane was a place of prayer, it was a

  197. place of rest and it was a place of fellowship with his

  198. disciples. That's all true.

  199. But all of that is secondary. The primary reason that he went

  200. there is because he knew that Judas knew where he would go,

  201. and he knew that Judas would take that mob and bring him

  202. right there. And he was going to surrender

  203. himself wilfully to do that. Now, does that mean that Jesus

  204. was actually setting up the confrontation?

  205. That's exactly what that means. That's exactly what that means.

  206. Look at the next verse verse 2, And Judas, who betrayed him.

  207. Also knew the place for Jesus often met there with his

  208. disciples. You know, I've often thought as

  209. I've reflected back on that event.

  210. I've often thought what if Jesus would have stayed in Jerusalem

  211. and he ever thought about that? What if he would have stayed in

  212. Jerusalem with his disciples? Then what what if the arrest

  213. would have taken place in the city of Jerusalem?

  214. Now, we know a few things about the life of Jesus.

  215. In the last week of Jesus, we know a few things.

  216. For example, we know that there were people that rejected Jesus

  217. one week prior though they were saying Hosanna to the king.

  218. I guess in today's common vernacular, three, cheers for

  219. Jesus and then many other people just forsook him and all that.

  220. We know that but then among others Jesus was very popular.

  221. Can you imagine how it would have been if they would have

  222. come to take Jesus? And in the life or in the, in

  223. the midst of all of those that perhaps would have been

  224. supporters of Jesus? Maybe it would have caused a

  225. revolution. I don't know, maybe an

  226. insurrection. Jesus is going to a place where

  227. he is taken and he controls everything.

  228. This is willful voluntary, surrender.

  229. Listen to John chapter 10 and verse 17.

    John 10 chapter mention

  230. Listen to this. Therefore my father loves me

  231. because I lay down my life, that I may take it again.

  232. That's verse 17. Here's Verse 18.

  233. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of myself.

  234. I have the power to lay it down. I have the power to take it

  235. again. Again, this command I have

  236. received from my father. In other words, a coward would

  237. have gone anywhere, but the garden.

  238. You know, in Matthew chapter 26. It says, the great multitudes

    Matthew 26 chapter mention

  239. came with swords, staves and clubs and they were ready for

  240. action. You know, the best that I can

  241. tell it was, it seems to me that the temple police were those

  242. that use the club's, the soldiers of Rome, use the

  243. swords, and staves, and they come to get Jesus.

  244. And look at verse number 3, listen to this, then Judas

  245. having received a Detachment of troops interesting about that.

  246. What is the Detachment of troops?

  247. A Detachment of troops, by the way, is a Roman cohort.

  248. Now, I've read a lot of commentators.

  249. I've read a lot of things, I know sha.

  250. Hey, I'm sure he has but I'll tell you, I've read a lot about

  251. how many men were would have been in this Roman cohort me to

  252. share with you some things that I have read.

  253. One commentator said that a Roman cohort could have

  254. constituted anywhere from two hundred, six hundred or even

  255. twelve hundred men. All right, then I just Googled a

  256. Roman cohort and I came up with this A Roman legion equaled, 10

  257. cohorts now 10 cohorts, in a Roman legion, was 5,000 men.

  258. So if there are ten cohorts you're talking about 500 men,

  259. let's just grab that number. Let's just say five hundred men.

  260. Can you imagine 500, man? And here they come to the Garden

  261. of Gethsemane. And guess whose right out in

  262. front. The vile betrayer.

  263. And he's leading the way. He's in the front.

  264. I like what one man said one time.

  265. What a compliment, 500 men plus all the others?

  266. What a compliment to send so many?

  267. Did you take to get a Galilean Carpenter and his friends?

  268. I say that because that's all they considered him to be just a

  269. Galilean Carpenter and his friends.

  270. Now, it says, they came with lanterns and torches.

  271. I read one commentator that said that during The time of the

  272. Passover in that area, it would have been a full moon now

  273. because of that it would have lit up the skies and they would

  274. have been able to see where they were going.

  275. In other words, they did not need a lantern or a torch to

  276. find the way to navigate their way to the Garden of Gethsemane.

  277. So, why did they have? Why they have lanterns and

  278. torches, I'll tell you why. I think, I think they had

  279. lanterns and torches because they thought they were going to

  280. have to search every nook and cranny that Jesus would be

  281. somewhere coward, somewhere, hiding somewhere, and all these

  282. men were coming and Judas is out in front and they had to take

  283. these torches and lanterns and find him somewhere because he

  284. was hiding, you know, the irony here.

  285. The irony, is that came with torches searching for the light

  286. of the world. They came with swords searching

  287. for the Prince of Peace. What an insult, what a cruel

  288. misinterpretation of Jesus. Who he was and Judas is out in

  289. front. And what does he do when he

  290. arrives? Well, we look to the other

  291. gospels and we find out about the kiss.

  292. I got to make a point about the kiss, Mark chapter 15, listen to

    Mark 15 chapter mention

  293. this or 14. Mark chapter 14 in verse 44.

    Mark 14 chapter mention

  294. Here is the deal they set up watch this.

  295. Now here's betrayer had given them a signal saying, whomever I

  296. kiss. He is the one take him and lead

  297. him away safely. Now, now, the deal was I'm going

  298. to go and I'm going to kiss Jesus.

  299. And that's what the word is in a singular fashion.

  300. A term of welcome and loved and I'm going to term of greeting

  301. and I'm going to give him one little kiss.

  302. That's what the word means on the cheek as it were.

  303. Now we don't go around kissing everybody today.

  304. We don't do that. Now I am Italian and some of my

  305. Italian relatives kiss, both cheeks and all that.

  306. I've never done that. I have no no intention to ever

  307. play. I'm doing that.

  308. I'm just going to stick my hand out to shake your hand.

  309. Hug your neck. That's it.

  310. Here's the deal. Judas was going to use a term of

  311. love and respect and honor of a friend in a greeting.

  312. In a friendly greeting, whoever I kiss that's him.

  313. Lay hold of him and take him away.

  314. But look at verse 45, that's not what happened.

  315. Verse 45 and as soon as he had come immediately, he went up to

  316. him and said Rabbi Rabbi and kissed him that word kissed in.

  317. Verse 45 is not the word kiss and verse 44.

  318. In verse 45, it is a magnified verb of the word to kiss.

  319. In other words, this terrible vile traitor.

  320. Went up to the Lord and kissed him repeatedly.

  321. What a terrible thing? And he kissed him repeatedly.

  322. What? A devilish refinement of a kiss

  323. and nowhere else. Can you find the disciples

  324. kissed coupled with the traitors sign?

  325. Now look at the next verse and verse 4 Jesus.

  326. Therefore knowing all things that would come upon him went

  327. forward. Now please understand, this is

  328. Jesus understanding everything that was going to happen.

  329. He's understanding all that's going to be and because he knew

  330. what was going to happen. Happen.

  331. He went forward, in fact, in Chapter 13 of John and verse 18.

  332. Jesus says he that eats bread with me has lifted up his heel

  333. Against Me. Jesus knew that Judas would

  334. betray him. This is humble willing

  335. sacrifice, all right? Jesus initiated the whole thing.

  336. Now, if you put the whole thing together, we might say that the

  337. kiss came first, we might say, the kiss came first, maybe it

  338. did. But did you know that nothing

  339. happened until what Jesus does? Does next?

  340. If you put all the accounts together, it may be that the

  341. devilish kiss came first. But nothing happened until Jesus

  342. did this. He says, Whom are you seeking?

  343. That's when things were going to happen, that's when things began

  344. to happen. Who are you seeking?

  345. He went out the gate, they were coming to meet him.

  346. He had seen them all the way. He saw Judas, put the whole

  347. thing together. He had seen them all come out,

  348. the gate down the hill, back up the hill and he walks right out

  349. to meet them. This is majestic boldness.

  350. This is courage that the Lord had set forth as he went to the

  351. cross. And that brings us to verse 5

  352. and that covers the next point, which is Is not only Supreme

  353. courage, but also supreme power now.

  354. Perhaps the kiss came first but nothing happened until Jesus

  355. says, who are you seeking? Watch What Happens Next in verse

  356. 5, they answered him. Jesus of Nazareth and Jesus

  357. said, I am in the original just as I am, I am now.

  358. Watch this in verse 6, W. What happens?

  359. Look at the power of Jesus Watch What Happens and then when he

  360. said to them, I am They drew back and they fell to the ground

  361. now. Have you ever wondered why

  362. Judas? It says that Judas was out in

  363. front of the whole thing? I think Judas, is there to prove

  364. to Judas that he has no power at all.

  365. He is nothing but a vile traitor, and the Lord was

  366. totally in control. The Lord was laying down his

  367. life. Nobody takes it from him now,

  368. have you ever wondered why they all fell to the ground?

  369. I actually read two commentators and this is what they said, I

  370. don't get it one commentator said this is what happened.

  371. Now picture this picture. This got about 500 of these

  372. soldiers there 500 in the Roman cohort and one commentator said

  373. when they fail this is what happened.

  374. You see the first guy just kind of stumbled back a little bit

  375. and they were kind of lined up really close to each other.

  376. So the first guy kind of stumbled into the second guy

  377. pretty soon he knocked into the third guy.

  378. And pretty soon as it were all 500, they just kind of like

  379. dominoes tipped each other over in the awful.

  380. Yeah, really. That's what we're going with.

  381. You don't think a soldier knew how to stand on his own two

  382. feet. Here's another commentator, you

  383. know, he said, oh, they thought they were going to have to

  384. really search for Jesus, but when they found him, they were

  385. so surprised. They just fainted back soldiers,

  386. really? I'm going to tell you why they

  387. fell folks. They fell because of what he

  388. said. They fell to the ground because

  389. of what Jesus said, and this is supreme power.

  390. Jesus said, who are you looking for?

  391. They said, Jesus of Nazareth. He said I am and they all fell.

  392. Look at the power, the power of Jesus.

  393. He said I am and in the very presence, they all fell.

  394. You know, the Bible says that God created the world by what

  395. created the World by his word. In fact, the Bible says God

  396. would say let there be light, and there was light, God said,

  397. let there be this and there was that all right, when Jesus

  398. Christ comes in Judgment, at the End of Time, the Bible says, he

  399. has a sharp sword. Where's the sharp sword?

  400. Coming out of his mouth. You see, it's the word of God.

  401. That's powerful. It's the word of God that would

  402. judge, man. It's the word of God that will

  403. condemn, man. It's the word of God that is

  404. incisive and it comes out of his mouth.

  405. This mob that was there just got a little taste of judgment

  406. power. Supreme power.

  407. Jesus says, who are you looking forward?

  408. They said Jesus of Nazareth. He said I am he, our I am and

  409. they fell to the ground that leads us to our third point.

  410. And that is, we find Find another preeminent feature in

  411. the arrest of Jesus. You know what?

  412. We see. We see Supreme love.

  413. Supreme love, you know, when Jesus anticipated the cross, he

  414. was always concerned about his disciples always, they're

  415. constantly on his mind, we see the selflessness of Jesus, we

  416. see the endless love for his own.

  417. In fact, in marks account and Mark 15 when he was praying to

  418. his father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me but

  419. not my will. But thine be done three times.

  420. The prayer was Dated, and when he does that, he checks on those

  421. disciples. Now I got to ask you Don't you

  422. think that Jesus was pretty busy just now?

  423. He was about to go and bear the sins of the world on the cross.

  424. I think he's pretty busy. But he was concerned about his

  425. disciples Watch, What Happens. They've already asked the

  426. question once he already asked a question once, who you looking

  427. for? They said, Jesus of Nazareth.

  428. He said I'm he and they all fall down and then verse 7 and then

  429. he asked him again. Who are you seeking?

  430. And they said, Jesus of Nazareth now.

  431. Little side point here. Wouldn't you think you'd be

  432. impressed if Jesus said I am? And the power was so great that

  433. you as a soldier fell to the ground in his power Dutch, think

  434. you'd be impressed by that. But they're unfazed.

  435. They fall down. They get back up there, unfazed,

  436. the Lord asks him again. Who you looking for?

  437. They're unfazed. They just said, well, it's just

  438. Jesus of Nazareth and they answer it again.

  439. Now, I got to thinking about this, you know.

  440. Sometimes we wonder about people.

  441. You preach the gospel. They hear about what the Lord

  442. has done for their sins, they learn about salvation, they

  443. learn about Kevin, they learn about having a better life after

  444. this life. They learn about all of that and

  445. you would think that they would be moved to make a decision to

  446. obey the Lord, but they're unfazed, and they just kind of

  447. walked right out the back door again, that's nothing new

  448. member. When Paul was talking to Felix

  449. the governor Felix, he reasoned with him of righteousness

  450. Temperance and judgment to come. What happened to Felix?

  451. He trembled, then he said go thy way for now.

  452. And when I have a more convenient season, And I will

  453. call for thee unfazed. Remember 911.

  454. I remember exactly where I was. I remember exactly the time it

  455. was. I remember in California.

  456. The sun wasn't up yet. When I where I was I remember

  457. all of that when that happened, I also remember how people

  458. change for just a little while, people started being drawn to

  459. their Bibles and sometimes that happens with tragedy, people are

  460. drawn to God in tragedy. But then in a period of time

  461. whatever we just go back, we just go back and be unfazed.

  462. These men were unfazed, folks. So why did Jesus ask twice?

  463. Watch this supreme love. Why did he ask twice here it is

  464. verse 8. Jesus answered I have told you

  465. that I am he therefore if you seek me, let these go their way.

  466. Oh, the Lord was so brilliant. He was so brilliant.

  467. He repeats the order to them. And by the way, let me ask you

  468. who looks like they're really in control.

  469. He said, who you looking for? He made the initiative, he went

  470. out to them, he knowing everything, orchestrated, all of

  471. it, set it all in motion, we're looking for Jesus of Nazareth.

  472. I Am All Fall Down back up again.

  473. Who are you looking for? Jesus of Nazareth, then.

  474. Guess what? Jesus does?

  475. He's not making a suggestion. He is commanding them.

  476. He said, if you're looking for me, I have already told you that

  477. I am he? So let them go.

  478. Let him go. Totally in control, what a

  479. powerful concept, you know, Jesus is not the kind of

  480. Shepherd who rescues a lamb after.

  481. It's half eaten by the wolf. In John chapter 10 and verse 12,

    John 10 chapter mention

  482. listen to this. But the hireling, he who is not

  483. the shepherd one, who does not own, the Sheep sees the wolf

  484. coming, and he leaves the sheep and flees, and the Wolf catches,

  485. the sheep and scatters them. This is Jesus referring to

  486. himself as the shepherd and he describes the hireling.

  487. Now, look at verse 13. The hireling flees because he is

  488. a hireling and does not care about the shape.

  489. Watch this verse 14, but But I am the Good Shepherd and I know

  490. my sheep and I am known by my own verse 15 as the father knows

  491. me even. So I know the father and I lay

  492. down my life for my sheep. Now a couple things we have to

  493. say, I Think Jesus knew that they would not be able to handle

  494. such a persecution or they wouldn't be able to handle

  495. having them come. How many times did Jesus say to

  496. them? Oh, ye of little faith.

  497. They had faith. But they didn't have enough but

  498. there's so much more there's so much more Jesus needed the

  499. disciples to go forth and preach the gospel.

  500. In fact, the Bible says, in the book of Acts, they did just that

  501. those disciples literally turned the world upside down preaching

  502. the gospel. Jesus knew he needed them, but

  503. he protected them in every way. You know, the lord always has

  504. time for his own. He always has time for his own.

  505. The Lord is always there for us. And when you think about your

  506. life, let me just say this, we, the Lord doesn't leave us.

  507. Have you ever heard somebody say where was The Lord?

  508. When this terrible thing happened in my life?

  509. I like what one preacher said? One time.

  510. Well I'll tell you where he was when your son died.

  511. He was the same place that he was when his son died.

  512. Folks, the Lord doesn't leave our side.

  513. We leave him. We leave the Lord and when we

  514. leave the Lord, we are away from the Lord.

  515. But if we are doing what is right, the Lord will never leave

  516. our side. Even if we have terrible things

  517. that come our way, Listen to This Promise 1st Corinthians

  518. 10:13. No temptation has overtaken, you

  519. such as is common to man, but God is faithful who will not

  520. allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able.

  521. And with the Temptation will also make a way of Escape, that

  522. you may be able to bear it. But folks, we can't do it on our

  523. own. We can't do it on our own.

  524. Look at this. Jesus says, let them go that the

  525. saying might be fulfilled, which he spoke of those.

  526. You gave me. I have lost none.

  527. He protected them all. What about Peter?

  528. What about Peter? What about what did Peter do in

  529. verse 10? Impulsive Peter, Simon, Peter

  530. having a sword drew it and struck the high priests servant

  531. and cut off his right ear and the servants name was malchus

  532. now, just a little freebie here, little freebie, I don't think

  533. Peter was trying to be a great swordsman and I don't think he

  534. was. So, So skilled that he intended

  535. on cutting off Mal khizr. So he just aimed really closely

  536. and just slit. Sliced it off like that.

  537. I think he was swinging for the cheap seats.

  538. I think he was swinging with that sword to cut his head off.

  539. And he cut off his ear Peter decides to do it on his own.

  540. You can't do it on your own. You can't do it on your own.

  541. Can't do it your own way. You can't do it that way.

  542. Now that brings us to our final Point as we draw a remarks to a

  543. close. All this happens.

  544. Who are you seeking? Jesus of Nazareth, they answered

  545. twice. He said, then if you are looking

  546. for me, I've already told you that I am.

  547. He didn't let these go why that? It might be fulfilled, which we

  548. spoke. All those that you gave me is

  549. talking to his father, I have lost none, Simon, Peter cuts

  550. off, Mal kazeer, Jesus puts it right back on.

  551. Now one final thing. May the Lord shows a fourth

  552. preeminent feature and that is supreme obedience.

  553. Look at verse 11, then Jesus said to Peter, put your sword

  554. into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup?

  555. Which my father has given me. I'll tell you people in the

  556. world. Don't like the word obedience.

  557. People don't like that word. Don't do that.

  558. People also don't like this word submission.

  559. And the reason that people don't like the word submission is

  560. because people misunderstand what it means.

  561. Submission and obedience is not a term of weakness.

  562. It is the ultimate term of strength.

  563. It is something willful. It's not somebody putting you in

  564. your place. It is something that is willful.

  565. You Are by strength submitting yourself in obedience to God and

  566. incidentally, in the marriage relationship, I'll just say this

  567. to when a wife would be in submission to her.

  568. A husband that is the ultimate ultimate Act of strength, not

  569. weakness, not less than it's an act of strength, and it's

  570. willful active, obedience. The Lord set the stage.

  571. He said to Peter, put that thing away, shall I?

  572. Not drink the cup? Which my father has given me,

  573. all right? Jesus paid a price, he didn't

  574. know. Because we had a debt, we

  575. couldn't pay. And yet sometimes people today

  576. are so unfazed. Unfazed by What the Lord Has

  577. Done. What do we learn in these

  578. verses, in the Garden of Gethsemane, we learn these

  579. things right here. We learned number one, supreme

  580. courage, Jesus went forward, he orchestrated the whole thing, he

  581. set the whole thing into motion, he knew that's exactly where

  582. Judas would take that mob. And so he went right there and

  583. act of Courage. He's so showed supreme power, he

  584. said, who you looking for? They said Jesus of Nazareth.

  585. He said I am And all five hundred.

  586. Who else is there fell down. What else do we learn?

  587. Supreme love. He said the second time who you

  588. looking for? They said Jesus of Nazareth.

  589. He said I already told you it was me.

  590. Here I am let them go. And finally Supreme obedience.

  591. Folks, he drank the cup to the bottom. and we are so thankful

  592. and we are so grateful because now we have the hope of

  593. everlasting life, I'll close with this final remark.

  594. The lord always has time for you.

  595. How much time do you have for the Lord?

  596. He always has time for us. How much time in our life do we

  597. have for him? How much time have we devoted to

  598. serving him? How much time have we devoted to

  599. worshipping him when the doors are open?

  600. How much time?
