  1. As we begin our study this morning.

  2. And as we look at this verse in Matthew, chapter 23, and verse

    Matthew 23 chapter mention

  3. 23. Jesus begins by saying woe to

  4. you scribes and Pharisees and then he calls them Hypocrites.

  5. And the first reason that he calls them Hypocrites from the

  6. things that will discuss this morning.

  7. He said, you pay tithe of mint and anise and cumin.

  8. What does all that mean? Well, first of all the word MIT

  9. there, if you look in the original Greek word, it actually

  10. is translated as Sweet smelling. In other words, you're talking

  11. about something that is in the kitchen.

  12. For example, you're talking about a sweet-smelling mint

  13. leaf, okay? Number two, what about anise?

  14. You know, that word actually means Dill, you know, like a

  15. dill pickle, something that you would have for flavor watch what

  16. they were doing. Oh, they were so meticulous.

  17. They were very meticulous in tithing and they would actually

  18. tithe of mint leaves. They would tithe of Flavored ill

  19. and they would also tie the 10% of what he's called cumin and

  20. cumin actually is a very small herb.

  21. Now, little background about Old Testament law, and I'll be brief

  22. about this under the Old Testament law.

  23. God instructed, his people, obviously, to give one tenth of

  24. all of their crops and we understand that the governmental

  25. structure at the time, was that of a theocracy now?

  26. What's that? What is The Theocratic

  27. government. A theocracy is a form of

  28. government that is Ron or governed by priests that do.

  29. So, in the name of, or for God and the Commonwealth of Israel

  30. was actually a theocracy from Moses all the way until saw was

  31. elected to be king. So at the time of this writing,

  32. we are talking about something that is is referring back to the

  33. days of typing. Something else, too.

  34. I know that the religious world the denominational world today,

  35. still has they use the phrase? Tithing in fact, they call it

  36. tithing and offerings but the word tithing actually means a

  37. tip. That's what the definition of

  38. the word actually is and nowhere in the New Testament.

  39. Are we required to give a tenth of all that we have or a tenth

  40. of our income? What were required to do and

  41. we're going to do that in just a little while.

  42. We give a free will offering That which we have purposed in

  43. our heart as we have been prospered.

  44. So let us give, so it's not a percentage, it's the heart

  45. that's being judged in the New Testament.

  46. Now, going back to the Old Law because Jesus was still living

  47. under the Old Law and we talked about the idea of tithing.

  48. And what did God actually say in Leviticus 27:30?

    Leviticus 27:30

  49. This is actually, what was really required.

  50. And all the time of the land, whether of the seed of the land

  51. or of the fruit of the tree, it is the Lord's and the end of

  52. that passage actually says it is, Holy to the Lord.

  53. What else? How about Deuteronomy chapter 14

    Deuteronomy 14 chapter mention

  54. and verse 22. You shall truly tithe.

  55. Get this of all the increase of your grain that the field

  56. produces year by year. Did God say anything about

  57. kitchen spices? Did God say anything at all

  58. about things that we're are used to season food?

  59. Why? No, he didn't say that at all.

  60. Are you kind of getting the picture of what Jesus is talking

  61. about? I read one scholar.

  62. You know what he called them? These Pharisees and scribes,

  63. then Jesus was talking to he called them wooden literal

  64. assists. I don't know what that means,

  65. but he called them wouldn't literally lifts.

  66. And what they would do is they took the command to give a tenth

  67. or tithe, they would take it to a ridiculous extreme and they

  68. would even have kids Chicken pox, and they would grow what

  69. they grow. Some mint leaves in there.

  70. You know, they would do. Oh, wait a minute, I've got a

  71. tie 129 for me, one for God. Oh what about this deal over

  72. here? It'd be the same thing as a

  73. pickle over here. You got Dill, you got a flavor

  74. there 9 for me, one for God. What about this over here?

  75. What about this? Tiny little herb, and by the way

  76. it was a tiny little herb used for seasoning.

  77. Let me get that out and what they would do meticulously and

  78. by the way. So everybody could see, they

  79. would take urmi and one forgot. That's what they would do.

  80. They took it to the Absurd. Jesus was talking about.

  81. Something different. John MacArthur actually said

  82. this way. And his commentary.

  83. He said these men magnify the insignificant and they minimize

  84. the essential. There are things that are

  85. ridiculous. There are things that are really

  86. insignificant, but we'll talk about that in just a minute.

  87. The idea of this though, even though an outwardly Jesus was

  88. saying to them outwardly it appears that their Pious, it

  89. appears that they're doing a great thing, right?

  90. But what the Lord is going to say, is no, wait a minute,

  91. you're rotten on the inside. You didn't fix the inside.

  92. That is the entire theme of what he's talking about.

  93. The difference between Tween how somebody is on the outside and

  94. what they really are on the inside and all the examples were

  95. going to use in this sermon deal with that very thing, the

  96. outside and the inside. And what we're going to find is,

  97. it doesn't matter. What we are in the outside, if

  98. we're rotting on the inside, it's not enough.

  99. It's not good enough, you know what you're called?

  100. If that is the case, he calls them Hypocrites.

  101. All right? They did the things that they

  102. would get credit for, you don't know.

  103. Kid growing up your, my dad, you say.

  104. I remember I would go do something and I got to tell you,

  105. you know, sometimes when you're a kid, you want the immediate

  106. gratification or satisfaction of someone, giving you praise when

  107. you do something. And I remember my father used to

  108. tell me this all the time, he used to say, you know, the

  109. greatest things that we ever do and if you want to ever judge

  110. what you do, And the significance of it.

  111. He said the greatest things that we do in our life, we do when we

  112. don't get any credit. In other words, what would you

  113. do if no one was watching. That's kind of what I think

  114. about these Pharisees. What would they do when no one

  115. was watching, when they wouldn't get any credit, when they would

  116. get the credit? Just with the did not answer me

  117. one for God. see, even the kitchen spices, we pay tithes on

  118. But then he says this, there's something else watch this.

  119. You have neglected, the weightier matters of the law and

  120. then he says, what the weightier matters are, he said, Justice,

  121. mercy, and faith. You cannot exist as a faithful

  122. child of God, without Justice, mercy and faith.

  123. Now, that's what he says. He says, you are neglecting the

  124. weightier matters of the law. Interesting about the word

  125. weightier. That word weightier is a

  126. rabbinical word. What do I mean by that?

  127. It's a fancy way of saying things that are governed by

  128. rabbinic tradition. Okay.

  129. In other words there was what God required and then the

  130. rabbi's which were Jewish Scholars rabbinic tradition

  131. based upon their own, codification of the Jews, they

  132. would have other things that they would add kind of like,

  133. carrying your bed on the Sabbath.

  134. Right. Well, you know what, a

  135. rabbinical word was the word weightier.

  136. And what they would say is and God didn't, what they would say

  137. is under the Old Law of Moses, there are things.

  138. For example, that are really not that big a deal.

  139. But then there are some other commands by God, that they

  140. called weightier. You know what?

  141. One of them was circumcision, you know what, another one was

  142. keeping the Sabbath, and that's why they hated Jesus.

  143. He said, I'm their son of God. They couldn't stand it and the

  144. way he dealt with the Sabbath and Jesus said I am greater than

  145. the Sabbath. I'm lord of the Sabbath and they

  146. hated him for it. You know why?

  147. Because based upon rabbinic tradition of rabbinical word.

  148. They called that a weightier thing.

  149. You know what Jesus says, let me tell you what, the way in your

  150. thing is it ain't seventh. It's this Justice Mercy.

  151. And faith. You've neglected, those things,

  152. you know, Jesus didn't just pick these out of the air.

  153. And this is nothing new. You probably know the scripture.

  154. It's in the Book of Micah. And this is what the Book of

  155. Micah says, that Jesus didn't just grab these three things out

  156. of the air. In Micah chapter 6 and verse 8

    Micah 6 chapter mention

  157. he has shown you o man, what is good and what does the Lord

  158. require of you notice? But to do justly to love mercy

  159. and to walk humbly with your God do you see that?

  160. He said you've neglected the weightier matters of the law

  161. like justice. What did Michael say?

  162. Micah said, do justly, they were not like that they were not just

  163. people. They were unjust people.

  164. They were Unholy people. They did.

  165. Things to people. How about this?

  166. What about Mercy? Well, Micah says, you got to

  167. love Mercy. They were unmerciful.

  168. I gotta say just as a little aside here.

  169. We need to be really careful sometimes when we don't have

  170. mercy for someone else. Because I'm haunted by the words

  171. of Matthew chapter 7, misunderstood by the religious

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  172. World religious world says, don't judge.

  173. It's not what he said, what he said is the manner in which you

  174. judge it shall be judged and you again. so, if I don't have any

  175. Mercy in my heart, if I have no forgiveness in my heart, the

  176. scary thing is and I need forgiveness.

  177. And so do you the scary thing is I'm not going to have

  178. forgiveness from God. If I don't forgive others and

  179. have mercy in my heart, I'm going to tell you don't fall

  180. into the category. Please of being a Pharisee and

  181. thinking it could never happen to you, don't do that.

  182. What about this walking? Humbly with your God.

  183. You know, that is. That's Faith.

  184. You see that? Where they people of Faith?

  185. Nope. Sure weren't.

  186. They were, they followed the works of the law.

  187. They judged everything by their own Merit and works of the law.

  188. Jesus says you've neglected the weightier matters of the law now

  189. then verse 20 the end of this verse verse 23 because I got to

  190. say you know what people do they miss quote this verse and you

  191. know what they say See Jesus even said you don't have to obey

  192. any kind of commands. Just have this just have

  193. Justice, mercy and Faith. That's not what he said.

  194. What he said is this the very next line?

  195. I didn't make this up. It's what the Lord said these

  196. you ought to have done. Done without leaving the others

  197. undone. In other words, you still have

  198. to obey the law but she got to add these weightier matters and

  199. don't do without them. You have to do it all.

  200. Now the Lord was not saying what you got to do is you should have

  201. counted out the seeds and the seasoning and all of that.

  202. That's not what he meant, what he meant is, you should have

  203. kept the laws about the tithe that was a command of God and he

  204. had to keep that. But along the way, while doing

  205. it, you should have not neglected, the weightier matters

  206. of the law. You should have done it all.

  207. That's what he said. Sometimes people quote that

  208. verse is a you know what, we don't obey anything.

  209. All we gotta do is have faith. Love Mercy, Justice.

  210. It's not what you said. Keep the weightier matters and

  211. also give attention to. The proper matters of tithing is

  212. what he was saying and then in verse 23 and verse 24, He says,

  213. blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel.

  214. That's from the new King James. And, by the way, that's exactly

  215. how it renders it in the original.

  216. And I have to tell you that in my life, I've kind of

  217. misunderstood that, and from the King James, it actually says it

  218. a little bit differently in the King James.

  219. It says, you strain at a gnat Now, if you strain at something

  220. to me in my mind, maybe not you but to me it sounds as though

  221. you were straining or re you are pushing back away from.

  222. I don't know you're straining against it, but that's not what

  223. Jesus was saying. He is continuing on the thought,

  224. you have neglected, the weightier matters of the law and

  225. what did you do by counting all the spices but neglecting the

  226. way to your things of the law? What you've done is you have

  227. strained out a gnat and swallowed it a camel.

  228. All right, it goes further. What's the word strain me?

  229. What does it mean? The word strain comes from the

  230. Greek word, that means to filter and incidentally in the Old

  231. Testament, the smallest unclean creature was in that.

  232. Let's talk about unclean creatures.

  233. So we get kind of some perspective here in Leviticus 11

  234. and 42 whatever crawls on its belly.

  235. Whatever goes on all fours. Whatever has many feet among all

  236. creeping things that creep on the earth.

  237. These you shall not eat for they are.

  238. Are an abomination. You know what?

  239. The smallest one was Annette. You know what they would do?

  240. I'll tell you in just a minute. Let's talk about the biggest

  241. one. Talk about the biggest one,

  242. Leviticus 11 for, and I'm gonna tell you what they would do

  243. about the net in Leviticus 11 and verse 4.

  244. Nevertheless, these you should not eat among those that chew

  245. the cud or those that have cloven Hooves the camel because

  246. it chews the cud and does not have cloven, hoofs is unclean

  247. unto you. So the two things, the smallest

  248. in the biggest that were unclean to a Jew was an that and the

  249. biggest was a camel. The Lord said, by neglecting the

  250. weightier matters of the law, you know what you're doing?

  251. You are straining out the gnat and you're swallowing a camel.

  252. Now. Little background on that little

  253. background. I read this these, The Strain

  254. their beverages. And incidentally, when they

  255. would make wine when they would do that, they stomp on the

  256. grapes, do all that. And they would take the fruit of

  257. the vine. They would take the juice, the

  258. beverage, the liquid, and obviously, they don't didn't

  259. have things that we have in our society about cleanliness and

  260. being able to keep things sterile, and all that.

  261. So, you know what happens sometimes?

  262. Sometimes bugs flew into the juice, okay.

  263. The smallest of which was an that and then you wait, and we

  264. can't mean that's in there. So, what they would do, they

  265. would take a straining cloth and they would place it over top of

  266. that. And then we pour into, or

  267. through the straining cloth in the juice.

  268. So they can make sure they didn't swallow one of those tiny

  269. little unclean, guys. Okay, so whatever do before they

  270. drank it. John MacArthur said this though.

  271. I thought this was rather interesting.

  272. So you have all these guys, straining Beverages and then

  273. John MacArthur said this, he said, but some fastidious

  274. Pharisees, drink their wine through clenched teeth in order

  275. to filter out any impurities and then pick the net out of their

  276. teeth. So, in other words, going, the

  277. extra mile at strain to the straining cloth and then drink,

  278. the drink cookers and drink and let the liquid go through, keep

  279. your teeth together. So your double straining, don't

  280. let the net down then pick the net of the teeth.

  281. Come on. Going through all of that.

  282. But having their priorities inverted, Anahuac confused.

  283. In other words, Jesus is saying you're afraid to eat the tenth

  284. mint leaf. But you're allowing hypocrisy

  285. dishonesty cruelty, and greed, in your life.

  286. But that's not all. This is incredible, but that's

  287. not all verse 25. He says, once again woe to you

  288. scribes and Pharisees and hypocrites.

  289. Why? Because you cleanse the outside

  290. of the cup and dish? But inside they are full of

  291. extortion. And self-indulgence the word

  292. dish in the original comes to my interesting Greek word, and it

  293. has to do with a plate that was used to serve Delicacies.

  294. Now, you clean the outside of the dish is what he's saying?

  295. Oh, you polish the outside of that thing?

  296. Man you got the outside of that cup.

  297. Just shining like crazy. But what you have put inside you

  298. got by hell extortion. In other words, here's the

  299. example. Somebody comes to a banquet and

  300. you serve them. Oh, you got a beautiful shiny

  301. cup. But inside is filled with things

  302. that they're going to eat, or drink or whatever that you

  303. stole. That you extorted from somebody

  304. else dishonesty. That's the example here about

  305. what he's saying. In other words, your ministry

  306. looks pipe, so it looks Pious. The whole thing is based on

  307. taking advantage of other people making merchandise of others,

  308. Now, Jesus is teaching here that while these religious leaders

  309. are concerned, we ceremonies they make them in appear to be

  310. pure. They are impure in the heart.

  311. And I'll tell you something, folks.

  312. Our life on the outside. Has to reflect our being on the

  313. inside. They didn't do that.

  314. They appeared to be one way on the outside.

  315. But Jesus did. What we can't do, he called them

  316. down on it. Now, you're rotten inside,

  317. that's what you are. And he told them that in this

  318. final sermon, incidentally, sometimes people say, oh, don't

  319. ever preach anything - I'm going to tell you something.

  320. When we preach things that are negative and we preach against

  321. are, please hear me, please hear me.

  322. We have to do so and season our words with salt and do so, in a

  323. productive manner, we don't ever want to use the pulpit as a

  324. weapon or be mean and hateful. But I'm going to tell you there

  325. are times when to stand for the truth and preach that which is

  326. right and when we do we have to preach it straight but we have

  327. to preach it. As the Bible says and season are

  328. words with salt speak, the truth in love.

  329. Some people say don't ever preach one negative thing at

  330. all. Just preach Jesus and that's it.

  331. Do you know who's preaching this sermon in Matthew 23?

  332. It's the Lord himself. Let me just ask you.

  333. You think this is Harsh? I don't think I can get away

  334. with this. If I did it woe to you scribes

  335. Pharisees Hypocrites, and lay them out.

  336. That's the epitome of love doing that.

  337. That is the greatest love ever demonstrated by.

  338. Anyone was Jesus. That's what Jesus said in the

  339. entire chapter. Chapter 23, if we get things

  340. right on the inside, you've heard me say this before, if we

  341. get things right on the inside, it will automatically translate

  342. into things right on the outside.

  343. If however, we cultivate only the outward facade, please get

  344. this, the outward facade. That is an actor, that is a

  345. hypocrite. Did hear what I said, cultivate

  346. the facade on the outside. Now, I'm going to tell you,

  347. you've heard me say people make mistakes and they get blamed for

  348. being hypocrite. That doesn't make him a

  349. hypocrite. That is true.

  350. But what I just said is, when you cultivate a facade and you

  351. never really intended to be that person, that's a hypocrite.

  352. That's a play actor that somebody doing something or

  353. behaving in a way that they appear to be one way and

  354. they're, they're not. But, you know, people look on

  355. the outside and the Pharisees did that, they look to the

  356. outside. You know what?

  357. The Lord looks on. Looks on the heart.

  358. What about this passage right here?

  359. First? Samuel 16 and 7, but the Lord

  360. said to Samuel, do not. Look at his appearance or his

  361. physical stature because I have refused him for the.

  362. Lord does not see as a man sees for a man, looks at the outward

  363. appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.

  364. And one of the most sobering things and I have to come to the

  365. realization about in my life is. The Lord knows my heart and I

  366. can't hide it. I can't hide my heart.

  367. I can't. I just can't.

  368. Jesus continues with this thought.

  369. Next verse 26, notice He says blind Pharisees Hypocrites,

  370. there's that word again. And then he says, first cleanse,

  371. the inside of the cup and dish that the outside of them may be

  372. clean. Also now picture it this way, I

  373. think everybody here will understand okay.

  374. If I got a coffee mug, okay, and it's dirty inside now.

  375. And I take a sponge or whatever and I hold it up.

  376. I dip the sponge in water, I buff the outside.

  377. I've done nothing to the inside at all.

  378. If I am first cleansing the outside, only I'm not doing

  379. anything for the inside. If however, I take that coffee

  380. mug and I got the sink there and it's full of Suds and nice hot

  381. water. I submerged this cup in that

  382. water. It goes on the inside, guess

  383. what? I've taken care of the inside,

  384. it automatically takes. Care of the outside.

  385. That's what the Lord meant. Cleanse the inside.

  386. And the outside will be fixed. Fix it on the inside.

  387. Wash the inside of the cup. And the and the outside will be

  388. fixed. Then he says this.

  389. This is really an amazing passage in verse 27.

  390. Again, woe to you scribes and Pharisees and hypocrites.

  391. And then he said this, he said you are like whitewashed tombs

  392. now. Please follow this.

  393. He says, you are also guilty of deception and I'm going to use

  394. the word and I'm going to prove it to you by the example that he

  395. gives you are guilty of Contaminating, others.

  396. You're guilty of contaminating, others you're doing so by

  397. deception. And, you know, very sadly that

  398. fills the religious world today deception and it contaminates,

  399. all of those that come and touch or contact with that false

  400. teacher. Now, listen to this, Jesus

  401. condemns these Pharisees for spiritually can contaminating

  402. everyone that they touch. In other words, you are not what

  403. you claim to be. And the example, he uses is Is

  404. whitewashed tombs. What does that mean?

  405. That Terry is a painter I was one.

  406. Okay, 20, I don't know, 27 years ago, whatever, 25 years ago, six

  407. years ago, came in the painting trade.

  408. And one of the fads back then was whitewashed cabinets.

  409. And we would even and one of the, one of the fads was red oak

  410. wood and then you take a white Platinum stain.

  411. And you they called it whitewash.

  412. You would whitewash the outside and if you add white Platinum

  413. stain to a red cabinet. You got pink, that was a huge

  414. fad and number of years ago. So that's what I think about

  415. when I think about whitewash but whitewashing this passage is not

  416. Platinum stain, whitewashing. This passage means that they

  417. they went out to these tombs and they smeared lime powder on them

  418. lime powder. Now, there was a reason.

  419. Every Spring after the early rain ceased, And you know what?

  420. Rain does rain would wash away, things like, lime powder.

  421. And by the way, it was about the 15th of Adar.

  422. You know what that is? That's the first part of March.

  423. So, every first part of March, after the rains, you what they

  424. do. They'd look out over Jerusalem,

  425. and they would find a bunch of houses, a bunch of walls, and

  426. most importantly tombs out there with no whitewash.

  427. You know, why? Because the rain washed it away.

  428. So here they come. They got the lime powder in head

  429. and they go out and smear it all over these tombs.

  430. In fact, I also read that sometimes the whitewash was

  431. smeared on caves and Limestone tombs for those that were more

  432. prominent and they did. So for preparation of the

  433. Passover, let me tell you why. When people came to Jerusalem

  434. for the Passover, they came from everywhere.

  435. Now, picture this hundreds thousands, I don't know.

  436. People came to Jerusalem for the time of the Passover.

  437. The people that live there in Jerusalem, they wanted to create

  438. something that was beautiful. You see this appear beautiful

  439. outward lie. So instead of having these old

  440. nasty looking Graves out there, they would go to these tombs and

  441. they would smear lime powder on it.

  442. So when you I walked into Jerusalem, all the beauty of it,

  443. it was all white. I read one scholar that said you

  444. can find white sepulchres that dot the mountains and hillsides

  445. all throughout when you came into Jerusalem during this time,

  446. But that's not the main reason they did it.

  447. That's not the main reason. That's not the main reason that

  448. they did. So they actually went out.

  449. And they put whitewash on the tombs.

  450. So people that came to Jerusalem at the time of the Passover

  451. would not inadvertently or accidentally touch the tomb and

  452. be ceremonially unclean for seven days.

  453. That's why they're going to the Passover.

  454. They don't to be unclean so they would mark it with sometimes the

  455. entire tomb being whitewashed. Other times.

  456. I read, you know, they did, they actually painted Bones on the

  457. grave White Bones? So people that would walk by,

  458. oh, I got to stay away from that.

  459. I better not touch that grave. Okay.

  460. Now, And be defiled. I didn't just grab that notice.

  461. This passage here from the Old Testament, numbers, 19, and 16

  462. Whoever in the field opened whoever in the open field.

  463. Touches one who is slain by a sword, or who has died or a bone

  464. of a man, or a grave shall be unclean.

  465. Seven days. That's the reason right there.

  466. So, they painted the sepulchres. Now, that's the example that

  467. he's using. He's using that as an example,

  468. when you came in Jerusalem, they were beautiful.

  469. They were claiming their own white tombs everywhere dazzling

  470. in the Sun, but they weren't what they appear to be.

  471. You know why? You know what they were?

  472. They were just a grave. I'm going to tell you, I have

  473. you. I would imagine in your

  474. lifetime, you've been called some names.

  475. You've been called some things I've been called some things.

  476. And what if the Lord called you a tomb?

  477. Because the only thing inside of you is dead men's bones, what if

  478. the Lord looking at my life said, you know what, you've got

  479. this facade, you're beautiful on the outside, in the eyes of

  480. others, but I know yet, No, I know you.

  481. You're full of dead men's bones, and uncleanness.

  482. That's what he told them. Now inside are full of dead

  483. men's bones. now, the next verse verse 28, Even so you also

  484. outwardly appear righteous. You appear to be righteous men

  485. but inside you're full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

  486. That's the example that he uses. He uses the to just like

  487. whitewashing the two on the outside.

  488. What do you got in the inside dead men's bones?

  489. What about you, what about you? He says I'm telling you this

  490. because here's the example on the outside you appear

  491. righteous. That's a whitewashed tomb but

  492. inside you're full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

  493. That's Dead. Man's Bones.

  494. You just did you just a grief? You're dead inside.

  495. And by the way, the word Lawless means to disregard the law of

  496. God. Make no mistake about it, folks

  497. and don't let anyone talk you out of it.

  498. Just because we are supposed to be those of Justice.

  499. Mercy, love, peace, faith, and all of that.

  500. As the weightier matters, it doesn't mean that we are not

  501. required to follow the laws of God.

  502. He said your Lawless. And that simply means you

  503. disregard the laws of God. Anybody who touches you?

  504. Here's his point is contaminated.

  505. You know, very sadly. There are many false teachers

  506. doing the very same thing. They're contaminating innocent

  507. people. But then the last one, the last

  508. one that he uses these false, spiritual leaders are cursed for

  509. pretension pretension. What I'm saying is pretending to

  510. be so much better than everybody else.

  511. You know, if you go all the way back to when Satan and a third

  512. of the hosts of Heaven were cast out of Heaven.

  513. God has always hated Pride. God is not okay with me acting

  514. or thinking that I'm better than Dave Morgan.

  515. I don't just use that example, he's not okay with that.

  516. He's not okay with that at all. God is never okay for us to be

  517. filled with pretension. The last thing, he blessed him

  518. with his this, you're guilty of all of the things I just said,

  519. but there's more. There's more you sit in a

  520. position or a place that you act as though you are better than

  521. other people. Especially those of the past.

  522. Notice what happens. God always hates Pride.

  523. So he says you appear outwardly to appear righteous as righteous

  524. man, inside your full of hypocrisy of lawlessness.

  525. Then he says this woe to you scribes and Pharisees

  526. hypocrites. Because why?

  527. Because you build the tombs of the prophets and Adorn The

  528. Monuments of the righteous. What does that mean?

  529. Okay, I had to do a little reading for that.

  530. If, you know that at that time what they would do is it was a

  531. big deal for juice to do this man that had already died.

  532. Let me just call them Heroes of the past.

  533. It might be something like Terry went are he's preaching his

  534. series on Heroes of Faith. In other words except lockers or

  535. tombs. Or Graves of men that have lived

  536. before that were great, man. Now, this is what Jesus says of

  537. all things. He says this.

  538. Oh, you are great at this, by the way, still hypocrite, you're

  539. great at this. You build tombs of the prophets.

  540. In other words, you build these monuments for those that have

  541. already died. Of the righteous.

  542. He's referring to the practice of rebuild rebuilding in

  543. remembrance those things for past heroes.

  544. In fact, I read this that even today, even today on the lower

  545. slope of the Mount of Olives. Even today you can find tombs

  546. that are built in honor of the prophets.

  547. And if you've been there and seen that, you know, exactly

  548. what I'm talking about. Robertson said it this way, this

  549. is exactly what you find today. And it's when Jesus was

  550. speaking, notice what Robertson said the tombs in the Kidron

  551. Valley that are now named in honor of Zechariah Absalom and

  552. Jehoshaphat. For example, they were all built

  553. at the same time that Jesus said this.

  554. So Jesus is saying, oh, you Hypocrites.

  555. Oh, you're great at building these These monuments.

  556. You're great at that. Yeah, you're great at that.

  557. Really big at lifting up the heroes from the past, lifting

  558. them up with memorials and monuments.

  559. Okay. And they even said this, if we

  560. had lived in the days of our fathers, we would have not been

  561. partakers with them in the blood of the prophets, we're better

  562. than them. We didn't ever done that.

  563. We have never done that. I've heard people say, I don't

  564. understand how the apostles for such Jesus.

  565. I could I wouldn't ever done it. I demand it right in there.

  566. Yeah. No you weren't no you wouldn't.

  567. No you wouldn't. First of all you can't know what

  568. you would ever do in a situation you never been in but no you

  569. wouldn't it was prophesied. Jesus would do it alone so you

  570. would have done it too. if Peter can mess up, I guarantee you,

  571. Frank brancato can Yeah, that was a special man.

  572. There I am not. What I'm saying is this, you

  573. know what they were saying they he says oh you build these

  574. monuments for all these heroes in the past and that but you sit

  575. back and say, oh, I don't ever done what they did?

  576. My father's did I would have never done a thing to the

  577. prophets of old that were killed by my forefathers.

  578. I would have never even thought of it like there holier than

  579. thou or it would be Beyond them to do that.

  580. The print the pretense here of ugly spiritual Pride, great at

  581. building monuments great at honoring men in the past and

  582. claiming to be. Be better than their fathers,

  583. they would have never done that. You know what Jesus says here's

  584. a direct hit and I'm almost finished but here is a direct

  585. hit and you know, the Lord never beat around the bush he made

  586. direct hits and he does it right here.

  587. Amazing verse, you know he says therefore you are what Witnesses

  588. against yourself. You know why it's the idea of

  589. like, father, like son They were plotting to kill the greatest

  590. Prophet ever. Yeah, they were plotting to kill

  591. the greatest Prophet ever. They were bragging and boasting.

  592. We would have never killed those prophets of old.

  593. Like our fathers didn't know we were better than that.

  594. Jesus said, you know what you are?

  595. You're a witness against yourself, why?

  596. Because the plot was already in place.

  597. The plan was already in place, they had to get rid of Jesus.

  598. Now, I'm going to tell you something, there's an next

  599. verse. That I love.

  600. Because you've heard me preach. How many times you have heard me

  601. preach that? Jesus Christ was no man's

  602. victim, you've heard me say it. You have heard me say that in

  603. great detail, many times. That he was totally in control.

  604. We go to the Garden of Gethsemane.

  605. He commands them to leave these alone and all that.

  606. We know all that, right? This is the first place I can

  607. see that it started. Watch this in verse 32, he says

  608. fill up then the measure of your father's guilt.

  609. What's fill up mean? It means this, it means do it.

  610. You are already your Witnesses against yourself because you're

  611. plotting to kill the Son of God. So you know what?

  612. I'm going to tell you do it. That's what the word Philip

  613. means. It is a, it is a word that is

  614. commanding to them. It is emphatic, in the sentence

  615. me. Meaning he is, commanding them,

  616. do it. Now who's got the power, who's

  617. in control? He said, do it.

  618. Do it. Scheming to kill the greatest

  619. Prophet. You know when you look at his

  620. life from then on he's totally in control when he's before

  621. Pilate pilate says don't you understand what I can do

  622. against? You said you know what, you

  623. wouldn't have that Authority if it wasn't for my father.

  624. Jesus says, no man takes my life.

  625. I lay it down myself. All the things in which he did,

  626. he commanded them and orchestrated all of them to do

  627. exactly what God's plan was. And Jesus saw it to the very end

  628. and right here, right now, do you remember, when I said, the

  629. reason that I wanted to preach this series is what happened

  630. from Sunday when they said Hosanna to Friday when they said

  631. crucify him? Thursday and Friday, crucify

  632. him. Well, I'ma tell you, he laid him

  633. out, pretty good in this sermon and then you already said, you

  634. are the Fulfillment. You are the full measure of the

  635. father's guilt. You are so do it.

  636. Scholars, tell us that perhaps there was nothing to happen on

  637. Wednesday. In fact, some Scholars say that

  638. maybe the triumphal entry happened on Monday.

  639. So that there was something that happened every day.

  640. We don't need to know that we've proven that the triumphal entry

  641. happened on Sunday. I believe that.

  642. And if that means, there was nothing recorded on Wednesday.

  643. So what So what? But we're nearing they were

  644. coming right to the end of Tuesday now and this is the

  645. sermon that they heard the last sermon.

  646. Jesus preached, I'm finished this morning.

  647. Thank you so much for your kind listening.

  648. I hope something was said that was both edifying and

  649. encouraging to you. As always is the case, My Hope

  650. and prayer is that it would cause you to have a greater

  651. appreciation for Jesus and for all that he has done for us in

  652. our life, and be better in the future than we've been in days

  653. gone by
