  1. I want to say before we begin that please pardon my raspy

  2. throat. I didn't have a voice this

  3. morning and I'm trying to do the best I can to forge ahead and

  4. push through it, but will hopefully not lose that again.

  5. Let me Begin by first saying that when the Apostle Paul wrote

  6. those things, as he was divinely inspired by the holy spirit in

  7. both Ephesians chapter 5. And also in Colossians chapter

Ephesians 5 chapter mention Colossians 3 chapter mention

  8. 3, Three that in those passages of scripture, we are commanded

  9. to sing. It's just talking about the

  10. times when we would assemble with those of, like, Precious

  11. faith and Worship the Great God of heaven.

  12. But in those commands to sing, No player on any instrument, can

  13. read in the New Testament. Any passage, which commands him

  14. to play such an instrument. I realized today, that singing

  15. and instrumental music in the church in the religious world is

  16. a much debated. Issue that has been for many

  17. years. We are talking about, though, a

  18. religious question when we speak about something that is to be

  19. found in the worship of the church.

  20. So, all that being said, when we deal with religious questions,

  21. we must understand that no question is settled, right until

  22. it is settled according to the proper Authority and Nolan and

  23. the proper Authority is none other than the New Testament for

  24. all. All religious questions today.

  25. You know, it can never be a matter of what you think can

  26. never be a matter of what I think it can never be a matter

  27. of what you like and certainly it can never be a matter of what

  28. I like, we must always determine what the scriptures teach on the

  29. subject and find out what is found in the New Testament.

  30. When we talk about the church, we recognize that the church is

  31. a new testament institution that institution there Raised up

  32. Jesus Christ and no one else. It is not of Moses or any other

  33. Old Testament Bible character. But Jesus Christ and him only

  34. therefore, we must look to Jesus Christ in his last will and

  35. testament and look to the laws that govern our work and worship

  36. in the church. You remember that much confusion

  37. arose in the early days of the church, over the effort of some

  38. of the Jews to bind on churches, the ordinances of the law of

  39. Moses. You know, and Wednesday night

  40. services, we've been talking about the 14th chapter of the

  41. book of Acts, we all were almost to the end of the fourteenth

  42. chapter. But what we find in the 15th

  43. chapter is there were judaizers that were entering into the body

  44. of Christ. We're talking about people that

  45. were Jewish by Blood and yet they were baptized into Christ,

  46. they were members of the Lord's church and what they were trying

  47. to do is they were trying to bind an ordinance from the Old

  48. Law and and apply that to those Gentiles that would enter into

  49. the flock. For example, we look back at the

  50. history of the Jews, and the Jews had great disdain for the

  51. Gentiles, because the Jews were God's people.

  52. And so, when the Jews were converted to Christianity in the

  53. back of their mind, no doubt. They still held some of those

  54. biases and prejudices against the Gentiles.

  55. So, this is what they said, there was a group or a sect, or

  56. a faction of the church that were Jewish by blood that word.

  57. Trying to bind circumcision on the Gentiles.

  58. Another words we really don't have any other choice.

  59. We have to accept them on the same terms concerning baptism

  60. and salvation but we're going to add one more thing.

  61. We're going to tell the Gentiles that they cannot be saved,

  62. unless they are circumcised to the Apostle.

  63. Paul had to address such issues. Somebody might say, well, what

  64. about Timothy? Why did Paul encouraged Timothy

  65. to be circumcised. What's the difference?

  66. The difference was in circumcising Timothy, it would

  67. cause him to have a greater influence for the cause of

  68. Christ among those that are unconverted Jews, when he would

  69. preach the gospel. Here's the point, and here's the

  70. problem. The problem was those in Acts 15

  71. were binding, the ordinance of circumcision on members of the

  72. Lord's Church. Gentiles if you will and making

  73. that a test of Fellowship, whether they would be accepted

  74. or whether they would not be, but any part in any effort to

  75. bind on Christians, the law of Moses or any other part of it,

  76. results in a sect results, in a faction results in division.

  77. Supporting instrumental music in the worship based upon Old

  78. Testament practices is certainly no different.

  79. Today let me make a very bold statement here that instruments

  80. of Music are prohibited in the scriptures even though you will

  81. not find a passage of scripture that expressly forbids the

  82. practice of using instrumental music.

  83. Now why do I say that? How many times has somebody said

  84. show me the passage of scripture That expressly forbids, a

  85. particular practice. Well, you will not find a

  86. passage of scripture that says, Thou shalt not have instruments

  87. of Music in the assembly. But I am saying this according

  88. to the commands of the New Testament.

  89. Instruments of Music are prohibited and violate God's

  90. laws in the word of God. We have commands, we have direct

  91. commands, but direct commands are often.

  92. Times used with different terms. There are inclusive terms and

  93. are there are exclusive terms, it includes the thing that is

  94. commanded and at the very same time, it excludes all other

  95. things that are not mentioned. For example, in just a little

  96. while, some brothers going to come up here and he's going to

  97. wait on the table and we are going to commune together with

  98. our Brothers and Sisters in Christ.

  99. When Jesus gave the command and the Apostle Paul did too.

  100. When Jesus instituted the Lord's Supper, he did this, he took one

  101. loaf of unleavened bread and he said it is representative of or

  102. it signifies the body of Jesus Christ.

  103. Jesus Took only one cup and the cup was representative of the

  104. New Testament or New Covenant by which we are bound and contained

  105. therein. The cup is the fruit of the vine

  106. and nothing else and the fruit of the Pine is symbolic of the

  107. blood of Jesus Christ. Now what is the inclusive part

  108. of that command? And that example the inclusive

  109. part is one loaf one cup and contained therein the fruit of

  110. the Vine. What is the exclusive part?

  111. The exclusive part is everything else.

  112. You cannot exclude anything else.

  113. You cannot add anything else. When Jesus took one low-fat

  114. automatically excluded two lobes.

  115. When Jesus Took a piece of that bread and passed it around and

  116. they all did the same. That's the inclusive part.

  117. The exclusive part is, you can't break it down the middle and

  118. send one down one side and the other down the other side.

  119. When Jesus took one loaf of our one cup on that table, it

  120. eliminated multiple cups. Individual cups of any variety.

  121. And any number You know, there is a particular religion today.

  122. I know a little bit about that because I lived next door to

  123. them. When we were growing up, we

  124. lived in Ojai And, you know, they actually believe that you

  125. can use water on the Lord's table.

  126. And I question that I said, but the Lord Jesus instituted, the

  127. Lord's supper with grape juice and they said we can use 7Up if

  128. we want to as long as we pretend, or as long as we allow

  129. it to symbolize the blood of Christ, But when Jesus use the

  130. fruit of the vine grape juice, it excluded, everything else and

  131. anything else. We cannot add our favorite dish

  132. on the ground that it was not expressly.

  133. Forbidden, the command of baptized Believers in Mark, 16,

  134. 15 and 16. When Jesus says he that

  135. believeth and is baptized shall be saved.

  136. He that believeth not shall be, damned the inclusive.

  137. Part who gets to be baptized for the remission?

  138. Omission of their sins. They that believe?

  139. And that that word belief, meaning more than just accepting

  140. of facts, it means having the forced to obey.

  141. So it includes those that are willing to abide by the

  142. teachings, of the New Testament. Somebody hears, the gospel, they

  143. believe it has the forced to obey.

  144. They are candidates for baptism, that is inclusive.

  145. What is exclusive? The unbelievers and everyone

  146. else because to be baptized Direct prerequisite is to

  147. believe having the forced to obey the commander saying

  148. excludes any other kind of music even if it is not expressly

  149. forbidden. I want to make this point.

  150. It is a denominational position. It is a denominational position

  151. which even some among our ranks as members of the body of Christ

  152. have adopted. This particular Theory, this

  153. particular practice, it is a denominational position that

  154. whatever is not expressly. Forbidden is allowed another

  155. words I want to add this practice, I want to do this

  156. thing. I want to add this to our

  157. worship service. I want to add that in my

  158. spiritual life. I want to do things and you tell

  159. me in the scripture where those things are expressly forbidden.

  160. That is a denominational position and sadly even among

  161. some they have adopted the practice of whatever is not

  162. expressly. Forbidden is allowed, I like

  163. what a brother said. One time though, when he said,

  164. you know, I'm getting tired of hearing everybody say, show me

  165. where it's wrong, show me where it's wrong, show me where it's

  166. wrong. I'm waiting for someone.

  167. That is, that is willing to adopt a brand new practice that

  168. we've not seen before, or done before in the Lord's church and

  169. tell me where it's right. Tell me where to write whatever

  170. is not expressly forbidden. Oftentimes, it is the thinking

  171. of today that is allowed, but in commands, we have generic and

  172. specific terms to like, for example, in Matthew chapter 28,

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  173. and 19. And 20, Jesus says go ye

  174. therefore and teach All Nations. Baptizing them in the name of

  175. the father and of the son and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to

  176. observe all things whatsoever. I have commanded you And lo I Am

  177. With You Always even to the end of the world Jesus gave a direct

  178. command and what was that that we have to go to All Nations.

  179. And we have to make disciples of all Nations.

  180. We have to go and baptize them into the name of the father and

  181. the son and of the Holy Ghost and then we must teach them to

  182. observe all things. That Jesus said, I have

  183. commanded you, that is a direct command.

  184. With a generic term. You know what the generic term

  185. is there? The generic term is the word go.

  186. Jesus didn't tell me how to go, he just said go.

  187. So guess what? I can choose to walk.

  188. I can ride a skateboard. I don't want to do that.

  189. I can even do that, I can ride a bicycle, I can ride a motorcycle

  190. in the Philippines. It's filled with motorcycles

  191. back. If you eliminated motorcycles,

  192. they wouldn't get around. It's so expensive to drive a car

  193. because gas is like $4 a gallon and they're not making anything

  194. so you can just imagine how handy a motorcycle comes and you

  195. find preachers riding their motorcycles everywhere.

  196. They go to get around, that is scriptural, why?

  197. Because Jesus didn't say how to go, he just said, go, I can ride

  198. in a car, I can get on a bus, I can get on a train, I can even

  199. do what I just did and get on an airplane and fly some 9,000

  200. miles away from home and preach. the gospel and never violate the

  201. direct command and the Great Commission because Jesus simply

  202. said, go However, what if Jesus would have said walk to All

  203. Nations, that would have been very difficult for all of us to

  204. do, but if he would have said walk, we might with our human

  205. reasoning and wisdom sit back and say, well, that's just

  206. impossible. I'll just add this or all a bat

  207. after all, there's no other way that I can get there, but if

  208. Jesus would have said in a specific term to walk, I would

  209. violate his direct command. If I rode that bike.

  210. If I rode that motorcycle, if I got on a bus train plane or

  211. whatever, because Jesus gave a direct command though, with a

  212. generic term, we can choose the manner in which we travel but

  213. let's go further music. The word music is in itself.

  214. A generic term have the Apostle Paul in Ephesians 5 and

  215. Colossians. 3 said, make sure when you come together Have

  216. music in your worship service. That would have been a generic

  217. term and not a specific term and because of that, we could choose

  218. all manner of Music, we could have had country western music.

  219. We can have rock music, we would do that.

  220. I'm just saying, if he gave a generic term that everything's

  221. included, you can add it all in. You can have instruments of

  222. music with a piano only with an Again, with the band with an

  223. orchestra, you can do all manner of things.

  224. If Paul would have said, have music in the worship because

  225. that is a generic term, but Singh is a specific term and the

  226. Apostle Paul said, that's the kind of music.

  227. That's the only kind of music that is allowed.

  228. From God's people, we would violate the commands of the

  229. Apostle. Paul divinely inspired by the

  230. Holy Spirit by having any other kind of music in the service,

  231. other than singing authority to play.

  232. The instrument is not found in any passage that commands us to

  233. sing. Now I want to talk about a

  234. common argument. I know I have a common argument

  235. over here. By the way we're going to talk

  236. about some specific things about this argument that was between a

  237. Baptist preacher and a Church of Christ preach.

  238. And some of the things that they said, here's another argument

  239. though, for those that are Advocates of instrumental music,

  240. they say I know that Paul said to sing but really it is an

  241. expedient to have an instrument of Music.

  242. Folks. How many times has somebody said

  243. that some practices, the same thing as a songbook?

  244. Well, same thing as having songbook if you say that that's

  245. wrong within a song book is wrong, I contend right now, that

  246. one of these things is an expedient and one is not.

  247. But to those that are Advocates of instrumental music, they use

  248. the word expedient, while refusing to understand its

  249. definition, the word expedient though.

  250. Means by definition something fit, or suitable to the end in

  251. view for something to be a Bible.

  252. Expedient, it has to be something that aids Us in the

  253. end result of what is commanded. Now, it expedites the doing of

  254. the thing that is commanded. Instrumental music cannot be an

  255. expedient because it in no way assist the singing because it is

  256. a different kind of music. What about a song book, though?

  257. You know, we have people here but men here that can stand up

  258. and grab a songbook. And lead a song when they've

  259. never seen it before. I've always been quite impressed

  260. by that I cannot But you know what?

  261. I even I understand I understand the elements are the things that

  262. are involved in singing. What is involved in singing, I'm

  263. not talking about any other kind of music I'm talking about

  264. singing, the two things that are involved.

  265. Very simple, I know, but words are one of them and the tune is

  266. something else. A song book gives us an

  267. expedient to do just that it tells us the words and it guides

  268. us through the tomb. For a song book is an expedient.

  269. The essential idea and the singing that's required by Paul

  270. was teaching and admonishing and making melody in the Heart.

  271. Instrumental music does not Aid Us in doing any of those.

  272. Therefore it cannot be a Bible expedient, if one wishes to make

  273. a noise or a particular sound than an instrument of Music

  274. could be an expedient, but if we are going, as one man said, one

  275. time, if we are going to follow, what the Apostle, Paul

  276. commanded. Instrumental, music is a

  277. hindrance. How many times has people

  278. argued? Well as just a small Edition?

  279. After all, we're still worshipping, we still mean.

  280. Well, but when we look to additions to worship, the Bible

  281. says, about the things that were written of old, or a four-time

  282. in the Old Testament, were written for our learning.

  283. So, let's learn and Deuteronomy chapter 12 and verse 32.

    Deuteronomy 12 chapter mention

  284. The Bible says what things soever, I command you, that

  285. shall You? Observe and do Thou shalt not

  286. add thereto nor diminish from it.

  287. Simple. If we are going to worship God,

  288. we can't add to the worship and we cannot subtract from the

  289. worship. Perfect.

  290. Examples of these is a very familiar example, is found in

  291. Leviticus chapter 10 and the first seven verses there with

    Leviticus 10 chapter mention

  292. made a Banda by Hugh. That is a perfect example.

  293. These men were priests. It was their business to do the

  294. things that are commanded in the Tabernacle worship and as far as

  295. we know, they did all of that. What's the problem?

  296. They didn't subtract from anything?

  297. They added something to it. Was God, pleased.

  298. No, the Bible says that God provided fire that devoured

  299. them, right then. And there, before God, they

  300. mixed a worship. They added with the Lord had not

  301. commanded. Another example with Cain and

  302. Abel. In Genesis, chapter 4 Abel,

    Genesis 4 chapter mention

  303. offered the sacrifice that God commanded.

  304. And therefore he was approved, King substituted something of

  305. his own choosing and because of that God refused to accept it,

  306. God. I will accept no worship that he

  307. has not appointed. God, commands us to sing and no

  308. other form of music will do. I've said all of those things to

  309. lay the groundwork before we look into the definitions and we

  310. look into the specific wording. That's the founding the

  311. scriptures that is used by Paul. First of all, the phrase in the

  312. King James version that says, speaking to yourselves in

  313. Ephesians 5:19 is better translated speaking to each

    Ephesians 5:19

  314. other or as its found in The New American Standard speaking to

  315. one, another Paul gives us this instruction.

  316. And when we realize the praise that we are directing toward

  317. God, when we come together in the assembly and direct our

  318. praises to God. We are also doing something with

  319. each other. We are edifying.

  320. One another, we are teaching one another, we are encouraging one,

  321. another in the Psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs are songs,

  322. then need to have lyrics that share truth, and that can be

  323. understood. You know, there was a song that

  324. used to be in that sacred selections book.

  325. Maybe it's an others too, but it's talking about the

  326. resurrections talking about the day of judgment and I've seen it

  327. written. Two different ways.

  328. I've seen it written on that bright and glorious morning when

  329. the dead in Christ shall rise. And I've also seen it in books

  330. on that bright and cloudless morning.

  331. When the dead in Christ, shall rise.

  332. I think glorious is better than cloudless, because the Bible

  333. says, in Acts 1, Jesus is coming back with The clouds.

  334. Now when songs in the end the song book talks about heaven, it

  335. talks about a cloudless place that is scriptural.

  336. But when we talk about the morning of the Resurrection,

  337. whatever that's going to be we realize it has to be with clouds

  338. because that's how Jesus is coming back.

  339. So, the lyrics have to be true. They have to be true.

  340. They have to be accurate. Also, they must be understood.

  341. You know, there was a meeting, we all went Years ago, a big

  342. meeting. And I'm so glad this brother did

  343. that. I've never done that, but I'm

  344. sure I should have because I would imagine that I've LED

  345. songs over the years in my lifetime and maybe there was a

  346. word or two. I didn't know what they were,

  347. but there was a brother that got up and there was a word that we

  348. don't commonly use. And he got up, and he said this

  349. word, means this, before we sang the song, he said.

  350. So now we can sing with the understanding.

  351. Also, we need to understand what we are singing and those words

  352. must be true and must be correct in 1st Corinthians chapter 14,

  353. beginning in verse 15, more words of the Apostle, Paul when

  354. he said, what is it? Then I will pray with the spirit

  355. and I will pray with the understanding.

  356. Also, I will sing with the spirit and I will Sing with the

  357. understanding also else. When thou shalt bless with the

  358. spirit. How shall he that occupy?

  359. At the room of the unlearned? Say, Amen at the giving of

  360. thanks seeing he understandeth. Not what thou sayest for thou

  361. barely give us. Thanks well, but the other is

  362. not edified. I thank my God.

  363. I speak with tongues more than you all yet.

  364. In the church, I had rather speak five words with my

  365. understanding. That by my voice.

  366. I might teach others also than ten thousand words.

  367. In an unknown tongue. We have to understand.

  368. Let me just give you a little aside here.

  369. In the Philippines. They don't speak our English

  370. language fluently though. They speak some, they all speak.

  371. So but when we come together on the Lord's day when we come

  372. together and we assemble with the large Church in the

  373. Philippines on the Lord's day and when we commune, we need

  374. brother do now to translate everything being said or we

  375. cannot say Amen, we can't say, Amen, do a prayer.

  376. We can't do that. Unless we understand when we

  377. come together and worship, we need to sing with the

  378. understanding. Standing.

  379. And by the way, we do that the Philippines because the tunes of

  380. the songs are exactly the old songs that we know, and we just

  381. sing the English words. I got a kick out of town

  382. Bonifay. He was sitting there trying to

  383. sing it in Tagalog. He is no way mean.

  384. A song. I got a kick out of that you got

  385. to sing with the understanding also.

  386. We need to have lyrics that we understand, and that are true.

  387. Now, please notice that, even though speaking to one another

  388. suggest congregational singing, and it does, now, please get

  389. this point, we must not assume that worshipful singing is

  390. limited to the assembly. I don't believe it.

  391. Although I've heard it taught in my lifetime at some point in

  392. time. I've heard it talked that we

  393. cannot sing the songs of Praises.

  394. Other than in the assembly, worshiping God.

  395. I don't believe that at all. I believe in James 5, when the

  396. Bible says, is any merry let him sing Psalms?

  397. I think the Bible is saying if you're married, Go, sing now in

  398. the command, in the Lord's Church, it doesn't say if you're

  399. in a good mood, you're happier. I marry then singing The Worship

  400. it says no it doesn't make any difference what your day is.

  401. Like it doesn't make a difference, what your mood is,

  402. how you feel, you come together and you will sing and you will

  403. do it together and you will do it with the melody in your

  404. heart, and you will do it in these Psalms hymns, and

  405. spiritual songs, you will teach one another and admonish one,

  406. another and encourage, and instruct one another in doing.

  407. So that's a command James. 5 is any merry?

  408. Let him sing. Psalms folks, we get together.

  409. Together this afternoon. And we can gather around

  410. somewhere and sing, we can go to my house.

  411. We can sing, we can go to a big meeting and sit around a bonfire

  412. and sing these songs of praise. Another thing.

  413. There are no absolute distinctions that are drawn

  414. between the different types of songs that Paul talks about

  415. notice. First of all, Paul says the word

  416. Psalm, this is a very misunderstood word of among

  417. those that are Advocates of instrumental music.

  418. Now, the word Psalm as described by mr.

  419. Strong is defined like this. It is a Pious song.

  420. It is a song of Praise. But somebody might say, no, wait

  421. a minute. What about the original

  422. definition? What about what faier says

  423. about? The original definition of the

  424. word. Psallo, what about that?

  425. Because that word means to Twitch to twang to strike or to

  426. pluck, but I'm going to tell you something.

  427. If we're going to quote Fair, we better keep quoting because on

  428. page six hundred seventy five of his greek-english.

  429. Lexicon of the New Testament, this is what failure said this

  430. is the same scholar. That said, it means to Twitch

  431. twang strike or pluck in its origin.

  432. They are gives many different nations of the of the Greek

  433. word, psallo. From which we get the word saw

  434. most, which is translated in the English language as Psalm.

  435. This is what Fair says in the New Testament The word means

  436. this in the New Testament, every time, it means to sing A Hymn,

  437. it means to celebrate the Praises of God in song.

  438. And then it says, Ephesians 5:19, James, 5:13 and Romans 15

    Ephesians 5:19

  439. and 9 Bollinger, another Greek lexicographer.

  440. After giving the definition of the word, he said this it is

  441. only in the in the Old Testament.

  442. Emmett worship that musical instruments were ever.

  443. Used, not in the New Testament nor in the early church.

  444. Justin Martyr expressly says that instrumental music was not

  445. found in Christian worship, JW McGarvey, one of the greatest

  446. Scholars the world ever. Produced said this, When any man

  447. says that by the word Saum Paul meant to authorize instrumental

  448. music and worship is what McGarvey said?

  449. He is a s'matter ER, in Greek who can believe anything, that

  450. he wishes to believe because when the wish is father, to the

  451. thought, true exegesis is like water on a duck's back.

  452. If your hope and your desire comes before the thought of

  453. understanding, then true exegesis or true understanding

  454. the context of a passage is like water going off.

  455. A duck's back, you will never understand what the word of God

  456. teaches on the subject. When Paul said sing Psalms, the

  457. instrument to be touched Twang and so forth is the heart.

  458. And not a mechanical, instrument Paul said, make melody in your

  459. heart to the Lord. How do you do that?

  460. You do that by singing? A song of Praise.

  461. What? About the word him?

  462. You know, in the religious World, a lots been said about

  463. the different words that Paul is using and saying, well, you

  464. know, there's different words and they use this This word to

  465. authorize instrumental music. We've proven that was never in

  466. the New Testament. It doesn't mean that the New

  467. Testament, so we can't do that. What about the other words?

  468. The other words for example, the word him strong says, is a song

  469. written in praise to God. It is a sacred song.

  470. Matthew 26 and 30 is cited. And when they had sung A Hymn,

  471. they went out into the Mount of Olives acts 16:25 and at

    Acts 16:25

  472. midnight, Paul and Silas prayed and sang, Praises unto God, and

  473. the prisoners heard them. As a great example, they weren't

  474. worshipping God in an assembly. Hey, weren't worshipping God in

  475. the assembly. They were in prison.

  476. In fact, it would have been unscriptural for them to Worship

  477. in an unscriptural way. We're not talking about the

  478. worship service here. We're talking about a time when

  479. they were in prison at midnight and they were praying to God and

  480. they were giving God the praise and they sang songs of praise

  481. and they did so loud enough that other people that were

  482. prisoners, heard them sing it. Singing A Hymn so you can sing

  483. hymns, you can sing what we often times call church songs.

  484. Anywhere you want to according to the scriptures Hebrews 2 and

  485. 12 says, I would declare thy name unto my brethren in the

  486. midst of the church. I will sing praise unto thee.

  487. That's the other side. You can do it away from the

  488. church and you will do it in the Assembly of the church.

  489. What about spiritual songs? Strong says, spiritual songs are

  490. songs belonging to the spirit or songs that have spiritual

  491. themes, you know, I gave you a variety of definitions and

  492. really, there's no tremendous distinctions between the Tom's

  493. and between the names that Paul gives there.

  494. Throw no great distinctions between all of those.

  495. There are no absolute distinctions that are drawn

  496. between the different types of songs that Paul listed.

  497. But you know if somebody was going to misunderstand or what

  498. Paul was talking about and somebody didn't know what those

  499. words mean, Paul clears it up by saying next the kind of music

  500. that's to be had and that is singing.

  501. He says Strong says the word. Singing means to sing with

  502. voicing words in musical, tones involving Musical modulations

  503. and inflections. You know, there are many

  504. different unique forms of singing from different parts of

  505. the world. I mentioned the Philippines,

  506. just a, just a little bit ago. They do sing a little bit

  507. differently to style, which they sing you can go to Africa.

  508. And I've heard recordings in Africa, the Africans Terry's

  509. been there. Where they sing.

  510. It doesn't quite sound exactly. Like, we sing the stylist, So

  511. forth and so on, in the manner we sing in harmony, we sing good

  512. parts. But, you know, when we sing with

  513. the spirit and we sing with the understanding also and we sing

  514. words that are true and accurate and correct.

  515. And we do so, according to the Scriptures, it doesn't make any

  516. difference if we were in the Philippines.

  517. If we are in Africa or were assembled here at plans Road and

  518. sing as we sing, all those matters of singing and song is

  519. acceptable in the eyes of God equally, so The key is this, in

  520. our singing, it is a message and attitude and our sincerity

  521. rather than the style that's important.

  522. We must choose songs that are for their appropriateness and

  523. spiritual content and the melody is made in the heart.

  524. The heart as Thayer says, is the seat of our spiritual life.

  525. It is the source of our thoughts, the source of our

  526. passions and the source of our desires.

  527. It is our Inner Man. It is our Spirit with which we

  528. sing and the words that we sing are to originate from the

  529. thoughts and feelings of our heart.

  530. We sing with the spirit. And we sing with the

  531. understanding also. You know, I never did understand

  532. how someone thinks they can worship in spirit and in truth

  533. and sleep. During the singing, I've seen

  534. people do that maybe you have to sleep during the day, That's not

  535. an item of worship that we get to decide if we're going to do

  536. or not. We sing with the spirit, we sing

  537. with the understanding we do. So in truth, We sing with the

  538. melody that's in our heart and one more thing along this line

  539. before moving on, there are many words in the New Testament that

  540. are used symbolically or figuratively that have different

  541. meanings in the Old Testament. For example, I have on the board

  542. there, I have circumcision. Now, I just mentioned in Acts 15

  543. about circumcision under the Old Law of Moses.

  544. We are talking about literal circumcision and that was a

  545. covenant agreement, or Covenant relationship.

  546. That was bound upon the men, the people of God, under the law of

  547. Moses, but we don't have literal circumcision.

  548. But this works circumcision is found in the New Testament.

  549. What is it? The Bible says, it is

  550. circumcision of the heart. There for circumcision is not

  551. used, literally in the New Testament it is used

  552. symbolically. It is used figuratively.

  553. Sacrifice was used, literally under the Old Law in the old Old

  554. Testament, they had blood of bulls of calves and of goats and

  555. so forth and so on we no longer have that because Jesus was our

  556. great high priest and it is, and Jesus was the Supreme sacrifice

  557. there for you and I don't make any more animal sacrifices in

  558. worship to God. That is done away with but The

  559. word sacrifices in the New Testament.

  560. We make our bodies, Our Lives, a Living Sacrifice.

  561. Used symbolically or figuratively.

  562. What about altar? We don't actually come to a

  563. literal Altar and offer a sacrifice in a place of honor

  564. and worship to God at an altered literally.

  565. But the word altar is used in the New Testament.

  566. In fact, remember what Jesus said.

  567. If we are going to apply what Jesus said to our life today,

  568. then we need to understand what he's talking about or what is

  569. used symbolically when he said when you can.

  570. When you remember in your mind that your brother Has fought

  571. with you, leave your gift at the altar and go be reconciled to

  572. your brother and then come back to the Altar and make the

  573. sacrifice and we don't have a literal altar.

  574. We don't have a literal sacrifice but we do have worship

  575. when we come together to worship.

  576. Altar being used symbolically for that.

  577. I said that to say this, it is misleading.

  578. Then to force, the ancient literal meaning of solow on to

  579. the New Testament text to justify.

  580. Fi instrumental music. Even if solow were to carry the

  581. meaning of plucking or striking a chord, then contextually, the

  582. instrument is the heart and nothing else.

  583. Finally, a common argument. A Baptist preacher was engaged

  584. in a written debate with a Church of Christ preacher.

  585. And these were the examples that were used in his final argument.

  586. He introduces the harps in heaven that are found in the

  587. Revelation letter, to prove, the use of instrumental music in the

  588. worship of the church. He says, this if it's in heaven,

  589. and we're going to worship in heaven for all eternity and it's

  590. acceptable in heaven, than why can it not be in the church

  591. isn't a church, the Earth. The institution of the Heavenly

  592. Kingdom, don't we believe that the church is what will be

  593. handed over to God in heaven and will worship God.

  594. For all eternity. And Jesus Christ will step down

  595. from the throne and God will reign forever and ever that God

  596. will be all in all. This fellow leaves the

  597. impression that these were literal Harps.

  598. He cited Revelation. 589 Revelation 14 2 and 3 in

  599. Revelation 15 2 & 3. However, if the harps were

  600. literal by the same rule of interpretation, you know what

  601. else is literal horses? There's literal horses in heaven

  602. and they are white red, black and pale, according to

  603. Revelation 6 and verse 8. But let's examine I'm in the

  604. text to see whether these Harps were literal or were they

  605. symbolic in Revelation, 5 and 8, whatever.

  606. John saw it was defined as the prayers of saints.

  607. In Revelation, 14 2 and 3. John doesn't say anything that

  608. he saw, in fact, whatever it means in the text.

  609. It was something that he heard and not something that he saw,

  610. what he heard was the Bible says, a great voice as the voice

  611. of Harper's harping with their Harps.

  612. He never said I saw Harps being played in heaven.

  613. He said, I heard sound I heard a great voice and that great voice

  614. was as the sound of Harpers harping with their Harps used

  615. figuratively. Their Revelation 15 2 and 3 it

  616. speaks of something that John saw among the things that he

  617. saw, he saw a sea of glass, mingled with fire.

  618. Fire. I don't think we really think

  619. that literally, there's a sea of glass mingled with fire in

  620. heaven. I believe we can look at that

  621. and be for a symbolic meaning. No one can actually believe that

  622. literacies of glass and mingled with fire in heaven.

  623. Neither can we look and find that there are literal Harps in

  624. heaven? Also, when a trumpet is being

  625. used in The Book of Revelation, it's a time when a woe is being

  626. pronounced. Or an announcements being made.

  627. Not for the melodious sound of it.

  628. And not so that they can have a good tune.

  629. So the angels in heaven can sink.

  630. These are symbolic. In their context. the final

  631. argument was this, I mentioned just a moment ago briefly, but

  632. all this will be my final Point. His final argument was, if it's

  633. in heaven. Then it has to be.

  634. All right, to be in the church. Let me ask you this.

  635. You believe that infants are going to heaven?

  636. You believe little babies are going to go to heaven.

  637. I think and hope we all do. Little babies don't have any

  638. sin. We got a little guy that we

  639. think is going to be there one day.

  640. Among all of those that have died as children, among those

  641. that have been killed and abortion clinics.

  642. These are living Souls. What do you think they're going

  643. to heaven? I believe, with all my heart,

  644. they're going to heaven and they were not in the church.

  645. Because to be in the church you have to first be in sin.

  646. And if you're a baby and you don't know how to sin, you

  647. cannot send therefore you need no.

  648. Remission of your sins. We don't baptize babies because

  649. they were born with the depraved soul and we believe, if they are

  650. innocent, they are pure and they are saved.

  651. Without becoming a member of the Lord's Church.

  652. Because Acts 2 tells us how you become a member of the Lord's

  653. church. It's when you repent repent of

  654. what your sins your life, how can a baby do that?

  655. They can't you repent, and you are baptized in the name of

  656. Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins.

  657. And when you do that, the Lord automatically adds you to his

  658. church. That's a pretty weak argument

  659. that if it's in heaven, it's got to be okay to be in the church.

  660. Those little guys are going to heaven folks and they never ever

  661. came forward during an invitation were baptized in

  662. water. One more thing, what about

  663. somebody that lives until they're 60 years old or so?

  664. But mentally, they don't have the capabilities of an adult.

  665. The capacity of an adult may be mentally, they are as children,

  666. they're maybe they're six or seven years old mentally.

  667. They're not accountable. They can go to heaven to without

  668. being in the church because there's no way that they could

  669. be of the mindset to make the determine choice to sin.

  670. You know, are Tanner is getting older.

  671. Taylor's already obeyed, the gospel.

  672. But I've used this example, I can't use it with Taylor

  673. anymore. She's known to church now or

  674. Anthony. But I remember using this as an

  675. example. They know these kids that are

  676. that are among us, they know what's right and wrong because

  677. what, their parents tell them is right and wrong.

  678. Not because they made a moral choice, but there Comes A Time

  679. in their life when they will make a moral choice.

  680. They will. Make a choice, whether this is

  681. wrong or that is wrong. I guarantee you every kid that's

  682. ever grown up in any house. Doesn't do things when they're

  683. young because they're afraid to get in trouble.

  684. Not because it's wrong necessarily but over time they

  685. learn and then they when they learn and know the difference

  686. they are accountable and then when they make the choice to do

  687. that, which is morally wrong or wrong in any other way they sin

  688. and therefore sin is in their life and they need permission

  689. from those sins. We car Omit.

  690. If in heaven, it's got to be in the church.

  691. Well, as we pointed out today, hopefully clearly the only music

  692. in the worship that's acceptable in the eyes of God, is when we

  693. come together congregationally and sing as we have done today.

  694. No instruments of Music are allowed.

  695. They are prohibiting in the worship and the only thing we

  696. are plucking and twanging is the instrument of the heart.
