  1. It's good to be here tonight. Appreciate the presence of all

  2. that have come to be with us. And we are very grateful that

  3. you're here. We're continuing in our study on

  4. the book of Philippians and the set of questions covers chapter

  5. 2 and verses 23 through 30. So we'll be finishing.

  6. Philippians chapter 2 tonight. What I'd like to do though is

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  7. I'd like to go back to verse 19 and we're going to begin reading

  8. there and I'll read down through the end of the chapter just for

  9. context here. Beginning there in verse 19.

  10. But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you shortly that

  11. I also may be encouraged when I know your state for.

  12. I have no one like minded who will sincerely care for your

  13. state for all seek their own, not the things which are of G's

  14. of Christ Jesus. But you know, his probe is

  15. proven character that as a son with his father.

  16. He served with me in the gospel. Therefore, I hope to send him at

  17. once as soon as I see how it goes.

  18. With me, but I trust in the Lord that I myself shall also come

  19. shortly yet. I considered it necessary to

  20. send done to you, epaphroditus. My brother fellow worker, and

  21. fellow Soldier, but your messenger, and the one who

  22. ministered to my need since he was longing for you all and was

  23. distressed because you had heard that he was sick for indeed.

  24. He was sick almost unto death but God had mercy on him.

  25. And not only on him but on me also lest I should have sorrow

  26. upon sorrow. Therefore I sent him the more

  27. eagerly that when you see him again you may rejoice and I may

  28. be less sorrowful receive him therefore in the Lord with all

  29. gladly gladness and hold such man in a steam because for the

  30. work of Christ, he came close to death, not regarding his life to

  31. supply. What was lacking in your

  32. service. Add me correctly, read and

  33. barring any mistakes on my part reads.

  34. Those verses of scripture that are under consideration tonight.

  35. In the latter part of Philippians chapter 2 and just

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  36. to kind of set the tone for what we discussed last time.

  37. Very briefly, we had studied that Paul wanted to send Timothy

  38. Timothy, was a man that was very close to Paul considered as one,

  39. perhaps, that would have been his son in the faith.

  40. You know, we talked about Timothy being the young

  41. evangelist. We talk about him like that and

  42. Timothy labored together with Paul, in fact, it was well known

  43. about. His character as well known

  44. about his priorities and all of that.

  45. In fact, we just studied last time that Paul said that he

  46. labored with me in the gospel as a son and a father.

  47. Now interestingly about that that doesn't mean that Paul

  48. being the father and Timothy being the son and Paul was in

  49. charge and and ruled over Timothy and Timothy obeyed and

  50. so forth, like a young child would do in the home.

  51. That's not what that means. What he's saying about Timothy

  52. is And his relationship with him.

  53. We labor together like a father and son, you know, there's

  54. nothing greater than the Loyalty of Father and Son when both of

  55. them have the same regard for the other and are working

  56. together with great loyalty. So it was a loving relationship

  57. that he's describing with Timothy and Paul.

  58. And Paul said, I have no one else that I could send that is

  59. greater than Timothy. I have no one else.

  60. That would care for you like Timothy.

  61. In fact, Paul said he said this. He said most people think about

  62. other things and they think about themself and most people

  63. don't think like Timothy. But as I paraphrase, Timothy

  64. thinks about Jesus Christ first and the cause of Christ first.

  65. So he'd love to send Timothy. He would also love to go himself

  66. but he knows that he can't as of right now.

  67. And then in verse number 23, he said this I hope to send him at

  68. once as soon as I see how it goes with me.

  69. And this covers the first question actually, I'll read

  70. another the second verse verse 24.

  71. And then we'll look at the question Paul says, but I trust

  72. in the Lord that I myself shall also come shortly.

  73. So, what was Paul referring to when he said as soon as I see

  74. how it goes with me? I think the answer is obvious.

  75. I think, Paul as he was personally imprisoned at the

  76. time, Or currently imprisoned at the time.

  77. And he was looking at his situation, his impending trial.

  78. And he said this, I desire to go to.

  79. I want to go with Timothy so I'm not going to send him yet.

  80. But as I see what's going to happen to me in my impending

  81. trial, just maybe I can go to and I would love to join him and

  82. go shortly. In fact, that's what verse 24

  83. says. He said I trust in the Lord that

  84. I myself shall also come shortly.

  85. I want to notice that phrase I trust in the Lord.

  86. You know what Paul was saying is he was saying this and many

  87. times Paul understood this very concept and it's a great concept

  88. to know it's a great concept for all of us to know even today in

  89. our life. When you are a Christian, you

  90. put your life in the hands of God in both Time and Eternity.

  91. And you put God in charge. In other words, what Paul was

  92. saying here? I want to go.

  93. I want to go to Philip II, want to go with Timothy and see you,

  94. but I got to wait to see what's going on here, but I trust in

  95. the Lord. In other words, it's in his

  96. hands but he also had faith that it would be.

  97. All right and he would be able to go to Philippi.

  98. He said I trust in the Lord. In other words, determining

  99. voice that holds the future is the Lord.

  100. And I believe that he thought that he would be able to do that

  101. by faith to but in verses 25 and 26.

  102. Yet, I considered it necessary to send to you.

  103. Epaphroditus notice how he describes epaphroditus.

  104. This is really incredible. He calls him.

  105. These are some high praise words.

  106. He said he's my brother. He's my fellow worker.

  107. He's my fellow Soldier but then he says, but he's your

  108. messenger. You know, interestingly about

  109. this word messenger, it could be used in a generic sense and it

  110. can be used in a specific sense and often times this word and

  111. its Origins is translated as apostle and we can look in the

  112. New Testament. We can find that.

  113. The word Apostle is used to describe those that were set by

  114. the Lord. And by the way, that's what that

  115. means, it means to be sent and we can look at the specific

  116. office of an apostle, and the 12 apostles And one fell and

  117. Mathias was added to the 12. And Paul was added later on.

  118. They were Apostles in an official sense in that they were

  119. sent by the Lord Chosen and sent this man.

  120. Epaphroditus was not an apostle in an official sense, but in a

  121. general sense or generic sense, he was an apostle in that he was

  122. sent, he was a minister. So Paul said this about

  123. epaphroditus, he's my brother. He's my fellow worker.

  124. He's a fellow Soldier but he's your Messenger.

  125. And the one who ministered to my need.

  126. And then in verse 26, Since he was longing for you all and was

  127. distressed because you heard that he was sick.

  128. You know what? I think sometimes it's Human

  129. Nature. It's human nature sometimes when

  130. we have things that go wrong. In our life or our health.

  131. And we worry about ourselves. I think it's human nature to do

  132. that and be really concerned about our self.

  133. And really if you talk to people about their worries, usually

  134. they're worried about things that are going on in their life.

  135. And I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that,

  136. sometimes we worry and then the Bible tells us what to do about

  137. worry is, you know, be anxious for nothing but pray about

  138. everything. But it's human nature to be

  139. concerned about the things that are going on in your own

  140. personal life. What's amazing about?

  141. This is epaphroditus was sick and the people that were there

  142. in Philip, I were concerned for him and his health and they were

  143. worried about it in fact and that's what it says in verse 26.

  144. It says since he was longing for you all and was distressed

  145. because you had heard that he was sick.

  146. What's amazing is Epaphroditus was distressed, not because he

  147. was sick or his own problem. He was distressed because they

  148. were worried That's amazing. How about being so selfless?

  149. That you have an illness and we're going to find out was an

  150. illness that almost took his life.

  151. It was a serious illness and he's concerned and he's

  152. distressed because and the word distressed me, the Greek term

  153. describes, the confused or chaotic, a heavy state of

  154. restlessness, that results from a time of turmoil or great

  155. trauma. So, epaphroditus was distressed

  156. because they were worried about him.

  157. Because he was sick men in verse 27 for indeed, he was sick

  158. almost unto death, but God had mercy on him and not only on

  159. him, but on me also lest, I should have said, I should

  160. sorrow. Had lest, I should have sorrow

  161. upon sorrow. You know.

  162. This is really amazing because if you think about this and I've

  163. always known about this, but I haven't really looked at it as

  164. closely as I did today. But have you ever stopped to

  165. consider that? Just maybe there are times when

  166. God spares the life of someone and extends mercy and Spares the

  167. life of someone for showing Mercy for somebody else.

  168. You ever stopped to consider. That's exactly what Paul is

  169. saying. Paul is saying God had mercy and

  170. extended that Mercy in sparing, the life of a peppered itis.

  171. But Paul said Not only did he extend Mercy by extending his

  172. life, he extended Mercy to me. So I would not sorrow upon

  173. sorrow that I lost my friend in the faith.

  174. You know, that's really a powerful thing.

  175. I got to thinking about that. I got to thinking about, you

  176. know, there's a lot of things I don't understand about what God

  177. does and God's providential care and we studied about that in a

  178. Bible, study the other night, but a God's providential care.

  179. I just know that God's Providence God is involved in

  180. his providential care and God makes decisions.

  181. Sometimes, we don't understand that.

  182. But in this verse, it's saying this, I'm going to read it again

  183. for indeed. He was sick almost unto death,

  184. but God Had mercy on him and not only on him but on me also lest

  185. I should have sorrow upon sorrow.

  186. That's pretty powerful. And that's what that phrase

  187. means sorrow upon sorrow. The first idea is Paul was

  188. undergoing terrible persecution. Paul was imprisoned, Paul had an

  189. impending trial coming his way, Paul had some real trouble.

  190. And instead of allowing him to have sorrow upon sorrow, and

  191. that would be with epaphroditus now Dying.

  192. God was merciful to epaphroditus and he was merciful DePaul and

  193. he spared his life. And then the phrase that I may

  194. be less sorrowful one scholar said to relieve the tension was.

  195. Another reason for sending epaphroditus back to Philippi at

  196. this time, besides the one mentioned in verse 25, in other

  197. words, when the Brethren got to see him, you know, today we just

  198. text I knew Chris was going to Chris and his family were

  199. running late. So I texted him to take the

  200. invitation song in the closing prayer.

  201. What I'm getting at is this, we have access to people, easily,

  202. instant instantaneously, even if you're in other parts of the

  203. world, But in this case, they didn't have that, they don't

  204. have cell phones, they didn't have ways of picking up the

  205. phone and making a phone call. So, Paul said it's good.

  206. That epaphroditus goes back and relieve the stress because these

  207. Brethren and Philippi were greatly distressed and greatly

  208. sorrowful and worried sick about epaphroditus.

  209. So, he said, I'm going to send him back and it will relieve

  210. that very thing, and also relieve the stress that was On

  211. Paul worried about them all. First 29, which covers question.

  212. Number four. Receive him therefore in the

  213. Lord. With all gladly gladness and

  214. hold such man in esteem. You know, the question is simply

  215. is this how does a Christian receives someone in the Lord?

  216. Well, first of all, when you receive someone in the Lord, you

  217. are receiving a fellow Christian, you are receiving a

  218. brother or sister in Christ. In this case, it's a brother in

  219. Christ. And the brother in Christ is

  220. epaphroditus. Now, interestingly they loved

  221. him. So they didn't need instruction,

  222. or they didn't need admonition. He wasn't correcting them.

  223. I think this was really just a friendly, loving encouraging,

  224. reminder receive him in the Lord.

  225. Now, this is what that means. I think it means this in two

  226. ways. Number one, it means receive him

  227. as a brother. That's number one, number two,

  228. receiving him. In the Lord also means receive

  229. him in the same way that the Lord would receive him.

  230. Have you ever stopped to consider the word?

  231. Christian means christ-like. And that means that in our life,

  232. we behave like Christ, if we're going to follow our leader, if

  233. we're going to follow Jesus and he is the, he is the husband and

  234. we are the bride being the church and we are Christians,

  235. meaning, we are Christ. Like that means that in every

  236. aspect of our life, we have to do our best to try to act like

  237. Jesus. You know the world even came up

  238. with a number that wwjd what would Jesus do?

  239. You know, I don't think people need to have some sort of a sign

  240. or a bracelet or a shirt. I think that people ought to be

  241. able to have Christ Living in them to the point.

  242. They don't need reminders like that.

  243. If Jesus Christ is in me and I am following him, then his word

  244. is burning in my heart too. I'm not going to need those

  245. extra reminders. I got the word of God and I've

  246. got Jesus Christ in my heart. So to receive him as you would

  247. in the Lord is to receive him as you will, as Jesus would do

  248. also. And then he says to receive him

  249. and give him honor or esteem because of his work sake.

  250. And finally, verse number 30, the question is summarize, this

  251. verse and then Briefly summarize the chapter So verse 30.

  252. Here's the Reason, by the way, he got sick.

  253. And I've looked and looked and researched and read scholar and

  254. after scholar. And I tried to find out what

  255. exactly the illness was and some have speculated but I'm going to

  256. tell you, I don't think we can know, I don't think we know for

  257. sure. All we know is what happened and

  258. when he got sick and it's in verse 30, Because for the work

  259. of Christ, he came close to death, not regarding his life to

  260. supply. What was lacking in your service

  261. toward me? So evidently they didn't have

  262. sufficient enough or Provisions enough for him to take it to

  263. Paul and have Paul have what he needed.

  264. So, what did, what did epaphroditus do, he tarried?

  265. He stayed along. He stayed there and did

  266. something of a secular. In order to create or have the

  267. provisions and bring it back to Paul, when Paul was imprisoned,

  268. whatever happened, whatever, you people speculate, whatever

  269. happened, he became ill. And in that period of time, it

  270. was an illness that almost took his life, very serious.

  271. Now, it's very important to note this too.

  272. When they didn't have enough Provisions, it wasn't the fault

  273. of those in Philippi. It wasn't the church is Fault.

  274. In fact, we find out later. They didn't have they lacked

  275. opportunity. In other words, it wasn't their

  276. fault. It just happened.

  277. They wasn't enough and epaphroditus had to stay on got

  278. ill, whatever happened to him, and almost died.

  279. Paul said I need to send him back to relieve the stress to

  280. relieve. The worry, also to get a good

  281. report and Paul was longing for the time.

  282. Very shortly perhaps that his matter from a legal standpoint

  283. would be cast aside. He would be released from

  284. custody and be able to travel with Timothy and go back there

  285. and check on the church in Philippi. so, That's the

  286. questions under consideration. So let's say I'm just going to

  287. give you a quick summary of the chapter that will open it for

  288. discussion. The chapter begins with the

  289. theme being humility. And not only just humility but

  290. humility with regards to its role that it plays in unity.

  291. You know, it's really amazing. If, if people didn't have a

  292. problem with humility, we really wouldn't have any problem with

  293. unity. It's easy to be unified when

  294. people possess the spirit of humility and the idea is this

  295. don't just think about yourself. And by the way, remember in the

  296. beginning of the chapter in the beginning of the chapter, if he

  297. wasn't condemning someone that thought about his own needs or

  298. his own self. He talked about, not thinking

  299. about only, Be your own self. That's the problem.

  300. So in the midst of taking care of my obligations, if I think of

  301. somebody Beyond me or somebody above me and I put him above me,

  302. that is humility. And that actually works together

  303. to bond with unity and that covers verses 1 through 4 verses

  304. 5 through 11. And I love this because now the

  305. emphasis on Jesus. Here's the example.

  306. So this is what I need you to do.

  307. But here's the example and verses five through 11.

  308. The emphasis is on, Jesus and his humility and exultation in

  309. other words because he humbled himself, God, exalted him, and

  310. gave him a name. That was greater and higher than

  311. every name. And I think that name is Lord.

  312. Why do I think that obviously is Jesus Christ?

  313. It is the description of him, but it has to include Lord.

  314. It has to, if it doesn't. Then why does it say that when

  315. Jesus comes back? They'll be a time when every

  316. knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord,

  317. So Not only was he given all power and all authority in

  318. heaven and on Earth, but he was also given the title of Lord.

  319. He is Lord of our life. He is Lord of it all.

  320. Therefore, he's been given that name.

  321. Why he humbled himself in submission to God's plan and God

  322. exalted him for doing that? All right, verses 12 through 17.

  323. Now, Then he talks about letting their light shine to the world.

  324. Paul encourages them to work out their salvation with fear and

  325. trembling practical things that they can do.

  326. He tells them to hold fast the word of life so that Paul could

  327. rejoice in the day of Christ. Now, something about that.

  328. Paul said you keep going, So that we can rejoice in the day

  329. of Christ and what's that mean? Well the day of Christ is

  330. talking about the second coming. It's talking about when Jesus

  331. comes back. So he says that there's going to

  332. be rejoicing when you make it, and I think it's really

  333. important because there are people in your life.

  334. For example, that you have had, some sort of effort, you've done

  335. something that has helped convert them, and maybe you go

  336. years and you've never seen, you never see him again.

  337. When the Lord comes back, there's rejoicing because they

  338. have kept the faith and you have kept the faith.

  339. And I think about that a lot too.

  340. I think about the fact that there's a day of rejoicing in

  341. the Lord comes back to hang in there and know that when the day

  342. of Christ comes the labor is not in vain.

  343. That's what Paul said that the labor would not be in vain now,

  344. got to add this though. Paul was not saying when he said

  345. my labor is in vain. He was not saying that he was

  346. going to be judged based on their obedience and I don't

  347. think we're going to be judged either based on somebody else's

  348. obedience and faithfulness. You know, we can do all that we

  349. can we can take the word of God to people.

  350. We could preach the truth. We can do all that, but there

  351. comes a time when a person has to make the choice on their own,

  352. and if they choose something else and they choose to turn

  353. their back on the Lord, we're not going to be judged for their

  354. making that choice. Their faithfulness does not mean

  355. whether the work was successful in terms of doing our part.

  356. You know why? Because all we do is plant and

  357. water, that's it. And God gives the increase so we

  358. don't get the credit when they obey and we won't get the blame

  359. when they disobey. But what he's saying is this, my

  360. labor would not be in vain? In other words, I look at it as

  361. a success. If you make it to the end and I

  362. make it to the end and together, we Rejoice that covers those

  363. versus now. 19 through 23. It was Paul's commending of

  364. Timothy. We talked about that in the

  365. introduction. I'll not do that.

  366. Again, his proven character and all that he was known for

  367. wanting to send Timothy understanding that, perhaps he

  368. would be out of the imprisonment soon and he can go to, and then

  369. finally verses 25 to 29. It covers, the questions under

  370. consideration tonight and that is for the most part about

  371. epaphroditus their relationship. Their love for him, what he did.

  372. You sacrificed and God's Great Mercy in sparing his life.

  373. Absolutely and Terry read that scripture when he said that they

  374. came to his Aid and he says and he wanted them to do that but

  375. not so that he could receive a gift.

  376. But so that it would be fruit credited to their account.

  377. Anytime a congregation is behind financially, a work.

  378. It is fruit for your account every time.

  379. And that means this to in a practical sense, there's going

  380. to be people just because you're a member of this congregation

  381. and it is a command to give and we give of our means on the

  382. first day of the week we must give.

  383. And when we do give whatever amount that is, we give that

  384. which is purposely purpose in our heart, as we've been

  385. Prosper, like the word of God says, okay, when that money from

  386. the treasury is taken and used to preach the gospel.

  387. There's going to be people in heaven because the support of

  388. the preacher that sent that is sent from the congregation.

  389. There's people in heaven that are credited to your account.

  390. That means this, just like Danny said, you are involved in every

  391. aspect of a work. When you're behind an evangelist

  392. preaching, the gospel in every aspect of it.

  393. I think the greatest things that are done for the cause of Christ

  394. are oftentimes done behind the scenes when nobody even sees it

  395. it could be a During Christ doing something behind the

  396. scenes. It needs to be done, could be a

  397. brother in Christ. Could be an older person could

  398. be a younger person doesn't really matter, but some of the

  399. greatest things that are ever done are done behind the scenes
