  1. Good evening, everybody is great to be here with you to worship.

  2. And now to study God's word together, we're going to be

  3. studying in Colossians chapter 3, verse 17 through 21.

    Colossians 3:17–21

  4. If you'll turn with me there, I don't know if Terry thought he

  5. was funny, giving me the section on the home and how wives are to

  6. treat their husbands husband to treat their wives and not a

  7. parent. But he gave me a good challenge

  8. that I think I learned a lot from.

  9. So thank you for that and now you have to deal with it.

  10. So we're going to go ahead and read those verses to begin

  11. beginning. In verse 17 of Colossians

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  12. chapter 3, it says, and whatever you do in word or deed do all in

  13. the name of the Lord, Jesus giving.

  14. Thanks to God the Father I threw him wives submit to your own

  15. husband's at his as is fitting in the Lord.

  16. Husbands love your wives and do not be bitter toward them

  17. children obey, your parents in the and all things for this is

  18. well pleasing to the Lord. Fathers do not provoke your

  19. children less, they become discouraged.

  20. Okay so this is our the landscape of what we're going to

  21. cover tonight. Now let's go back up to the

  22. first verse. I love how this starts out he

  23. says, and whatever you do in word or deed.

  24. Do all in the name of the Lord Jesus.

  25. So this gives us a good starting point for everything.

  26. We're going to look at everything.

  27. He's going to say is based on the premise of what he just said

  28. it makes everything else. He's says, okay, because this is

  29. on Jesus Authority and everything we do.

  30. This is supposed to cover every area of Our Lives because it's

  31. not something we take our godliness and were Godly and,

  32. and one section. And we go about our work or we

  33. navigate our relationships, another area of our life.

  34. These areas of our lives are where we, where we ignite

  35. godliness there, the mediums through which we involve

  36. godliness in our lives. And that's he says, they're

  37. everything we do is in the name of our Lord Jesus.

  38. So that first question says, what is meant by the phrase?

  39. Do all in the name of the Lord Jesus.

  40. So it's not saying that we need to do everything in the name of

  41. the Lord Jesus. By speaking those words, I go to

  42. school. Today, I go to work today in the

  43. name of the Lord Jesus and we To say those words, that's not what

  44. it's saying. What that word that phrase in

  45. the name of the Lord Jesus is, is it's acting knowing that

  46. that's who are acting on behalf of he says, in word or indeed,

  47. if that's who we're speaking on behalf of that is who were

  48. operating on behalf of in this and in our life and that's hard

  49. to focus on all the time, when we realize how big of a deal

  50. that is, its kind of overwhelming.

  51. I'm the one who speaking for God on Earth, I'm the one who is

  52. supposed To show people what Christ is like.

  53. And that's a big thought, but that's what second Corinthians.

    2 Corinthians 5:20

  54. 5:20 says it tells us that we are Christ's ambassadors on

  55. Earth and Ambassador is somebody who who leaves the country on

  56. behalf of the country and goes and speaks to another country

  57. and their representatives. It's a representative for for

  58. the country or part of. So, our US ambassador, may meet

  59. with a rep meet with an ambassador of China and they

  60. discuss operations. They discuss relationships from

  61. each side. And that's what we are for God.

  62. We are a representative for God. We are acting on behalf of God,

  63. here, in everything we do. And he said here, that this is

  64. to cover anything we say, and anything we do and, you know,

  65. it's, it would be kind of silly if you had an ambassador who

  66. just sat around and did nothing, you just sat with his feet up

  67. all day and didn't go make any interactions who if you had a,

  68. you know, someone else, maybe they're their assignment was a

  69. CIA agent. If they just sat around and did

  70. nothing, if we have a position, And we need to stand up to our

  71. position. It's not like we can shrink away

  72. from this and say I know that's that's great for some people but

  73. I just don't want to be that. We're called to be an ambassador

  74. because no one else is going to do it.

  75. And it's important that we do it well because because it's not

  76. like Christ is gonna be here, picking up our pieces all the

  77. time and physically if I go about my daily life Christ isn't

  78. standing there, talking to everyone else going.

  79. Okay? He was a jerk today.

  80. He was not very kind you and he didn't do what he should have

  81. been doing it. He didn't help you guys.

  82. Like you should have but that's not what a Christians.

  83. Really like a Christian shouldn't be like that.

  84. A christ-like person is someone like this Jesus isn't there to

  85. pick up our pieces all the time. It is.

  86. Our job to be Christ's representative in the way we

  87. live. And that concept of doing

  88. everything in the name of the Lord.

  89. Jesus is something that should govern everything we talked

  90. about going on from here. So, carrying the name is to

  91. summarize, it is the realization, the perspective,

  92. and the purpose of working for him and for his glory.

  93. So moving on to the next verse Verse 18, do the second half of

  94. verse 17 says, do all in the name of the Lord.

  95. Jesus giving. Thanks to God the Father through

  96. him. So that's something we do with

  97. thankfulness. It's something we don't want to

  98. shirk away from shy away from, is the chance that we get to be

  99. a part of this. We get to be an ambassador of

  100. Christ. We get to have that license if

  101. you will. What if God said, you know, you

  102. messed up so you can never be a part of my team.

  103. You can never be a part of what I'm going to do on this Earth.

  104. You know, that be disappointed. We'd be on the outside looking

  105. in, but God tells us you get to be a part of my team.

  106. You get to act as my Ambassador and you need to give, thanks to

  107. God, the Father through him and everything you do.

  108. It's an attitude of thankfulness even though it's a heavy thing,

  109. we accept it and we're going to be doing everything we do with a

  110. thankfulness toward God. Okay, so Verse 18, says, wives

  111. submit to your own husband's as is fitting in the Lord.

  112. So what we just said, Everything we do needs to be done in the

  113. name of the Lord Jesus. So, so, starting off in wife or

  114. wives wives need to act toward their husbands and in the name

  115. of the Lord Jesus, let's remember that.

  116. So we're acting on wiser to act on the name of the Lord Jesus

  117. and the way they act and how are you how are women supposed to

  118. act toward their husbands to submit to your own husband's as

  119. is fitting in the Lord. So the first part, I want to

  120. notice on that is the OWN the word own right there.

  121. He could have said, well, I've submit to men like in statement,

  122. but I think it's important here and what he says is that he says

  123. submit to your own husband's, women are not an inferior being.

  124. There is a headship crisis. Stablished God, the Father

  125. Christ, man. And God, that's just the order

  126. of things that God set it up in. But it doesn't mean the women or

  127. the wife's are in any lower position, less of a any position

  128. of lesser value. And is important to notice that

  129. he says to submit to your own husband's.

  130. This isn't that there's a direct commandment to submit to any

  131. man, any situation. So I think that's an important

  132. note as we move forward. But the overall command that's

  133. given here is to submit. Now this is for something.

  134. I want to focus as a universal concept because we are told as

  135. Christians to be submissive as a whole, that's a command

  136. throughout scripture. And I think that is the Biggest

  137. most probably the most impactful way we can show Christ to others

  138. in general, that is what Christ did.

  139. He took his will and he put it aside and he came down here,

  140. everything you see in Christ's life was a this is what I might

  141. want, but I'm going to set that aside and do this.

  142. I'm going to set aside everything that's perfect up in

  143. here here in heaven. However it is I'm going to set

  144. aside and go to my people. I'm going to set aside what I

  145. want over and over. And so Christ attitude that he

  146. set for us was one of submission.

  147. And so instead of looking at like many people, look at that

  148. as a negative thing, this submissive attitude.

  149. It's not, it is a position of strength.

  150. It is, I have this power but I'm going to release it.

  151. It's kind of like gentleness. I've heard gentleness described

  152. a strength controlled Like, like I have the ability to do one

  153. thing, but I'm going to give, I'm going to carefully control

  154. myself and handle this and give you the, the upper hand or

  155. whatever. It might be.

  156. So this concept of submission is discussed in Ephesians chapter 5

    Ephesians 5:21–23

  157. verse 21 through 23. And there is says submitting to

  158. one another, to one another, in the fear of God, that is a

  159. commandment for everyone to submit to one another.

  160. So this is primarily an instruction to be submissive to

  161. all Christians. Now I think both for this

  162. command toward the women to be to submit to your own husband's

  163. and the command that's going to follow, for the husband's to

  164. love your wives. Those are both.

  165. Those are both commands for all Christians to love your wives

  166. and do not be. Be bitter.

  167. Those are the love to not be bitter and submissiveness is

  168. something we're all commanded to do anyway.

  169. But I think these two are pointed out specifically for one

  170. for the man and one for the woman because maybe there are

  171. areas that we commonly fail in that one of the areas we falter

  172. first and is maybe the husbands don't love their wives if they

  173. feel certain way and they turned bitter.

  174. That's a maybe that's a first reaction.

  175. Maybe the wives first reaction for many is when their husbands

  176. not acting. Well to I'm not going to say

  177. admit to that. But so this, these are ways that

  178. God is pointing out perhaps that their key areas, we need to

  179. focus on and if we're in one of these roles as a husband, or a

  180. wife, In Philippians 2 verse 3. We're told to do nothing from

    Philippians 2:3

  181. selfish ambition or conceit but in humility count others, more

  182. exciting. More significant than ourselves

  183. to look at to the other to the needs of others.

  184. As more important than our own. And I think, as we, as the

  185. question asks, well, how does this a wife submit to her own?

  186. Husband is important to notice these Concepts as a whole to

  187. know, how this can be implemented in a way in a wife's

  188. life is that they are you weird to look at no one else's needs

  189. above our own and a wife can do that by looking out for the

  190. needs of her husband, and taking care of those.

  191. And in many different ways and companionship, and strength, and

  192. encouragement support. Anything you might throw in

  193. there. It is, it is something that the

  194. wife should be looking for and submitting to sometimes take

  195. what she wants and set aside and do what might be best for her.

  196. Husband that how the question as to.

  197. How does a wife submit to her husband?

  198. I think is important to note that says, as As is fitting in

  199. the Lord that you don't just submit to anything.

  200. If you're a wife, you submit to things that are proper in the

  201. Lord. First things that are, okay,

  202. that God wants us to do first. And from, there it is, I guess

  203. it's a discretionary command is what can I do for him in this

  204. situation? What can I do for him and this

  205. situation? So it's a situational thing is

  206. how to best submit to her own husband and taking care of him

  207. and helping him. And I think this is also

  208. addressed in First Peter chapter 3 beginning in verse 1.

    1 Peter 3 chapter mention

  209. There it says that wives are to submit going to turn over there

  210. real quick. Why is likewise be submissive to

  211. your own husband's that? Even if some do not obey the

  212. word, they without a word, may be won by the conduct of their

  213. wives. So, what you just said there is

  214. that if you have an unbelieving husband, even if you might not

  215. believe the word of God Alone, maybe because of your actions,

  216. your submissive attitude, your your godliness, you can change

  217. him. And I think that is a critical

  218. part of everything we've discussed here is the power of a

  219. submissive. We'll have it your way out of

  220. tude and changing hearts. For both the woman and for all

  221. of us to have a submissive attitude, I don't know.

  222. One thing that can turn someone's head faster as when

  223. they expect you to do one thing in a selfish way and to act in

  224. their own interest and you say no here, we'll do it your way.

  225. I know I wanted this and it's obvious maybe by the situation

  226. but no, we're going to do it your way.

  227. I'm going to sacrifice on my behalf to get to let you have

  228. the upper hand somehow and that is a beautiful thing because

  229. people are going to say, wait what?

  230. They can have a double. Take.

  231. What do you mean? You're going to?

  232. Give up something for me. I know you wanted that.

  233. No you can have it. That's for you.

  234. We're going to do it your way. And so as a whole this is an

  235. attitude. I think we can all learn from

  236. Going on to verse 19. It says husband's, love your

  237. wives and do not be bitter toward them.

  238. So this instruction for the husband's is to not be bitter.

  239. Some of these things, I'm not gonna have a whole lot to say on

  240. because I will maybe leave for the older man or someone else to

  241. fill in these gaps because I don't have a whole lot of advice

  242. on, but one of the things as I was thinking about these things,

  243. why can a husband get bitter toward his wife and typically

  244. Bitterness comes from, it seems like from a place of an

  245. expectation that was not met for example.

  246. If you had a friend who was supposed to be a good friend to

  247. you that you guys had been close friends for a long time and they

  248. betrayed you or they went, you know, they did something

  249. contrary to you. And they kind of left you high

  250. and dry that creates a certain feeling of bitterness that you

  251. don't feel from anyone else. People can make you angry on the

  252. side of the road, people can make you angry.

  253. You're going about your daily business.

  254. They can make you frustrated. But Bitterness comes from

  255. something that's deeper seeded and you're angry about because

  256. they should have done better for you.

  257. And I think as as many men approached relationships

  258. husband's approach relationships, they see, they

  259. see this wife when, you know, maybe the first together is

  260. this, the this perfect being that can't do any wrong and

  261. they're just so overwhelmed with how great they are.

  262. And then there's a point where they realize, hey, they're

  263. human. But for for someone who felt

  264. like this woman is everything that will ever need in my life

  265. to make me happy in any way. That's a big drop off for them

  266. to feel like, well, this person failed me this, you know, my

  267. wife failed me on this and so maybe that's where the

  268. bitterness comes in, where his expectations for her were so

  269. high that when she didn't meet those expectations, he got

  270. bitter because she should have been something else for him.

  271. That's just some thoughts. I have maybe that's why, but I

  272. think that speaks to the need for husbands to have wise

  273. expectations. I guess I'm pointing.

  274. Fingers at myself. As I'm the one who's kind of

  275. stepping on Deck to this, but to have wise expectations, that,

  276. that yes, you, you want to choose a Godly wife and you want

  277. to choose, someone is going to be best for you.

  278. But there's a point where she is human as well, and she won't be

  279. God. She's not going to be perfect.

  280. And, and if, if she does feel, that's just because she's a lot

  281. like you, she's a lot like any of us.

  282. So, to have wise expectations for marriage and for A spouse or

  283. for anyone in our lives. I think it will be helpful in

  284. fostering, good relationships, but the message to the men is to

  285. love the wife, to show them like to show them love.

  286. And another scripture it says to bear with them and understanding

  287. and to dwell with him and understanding so to really get

  288. to know them because that will help to not have a ridiculous

  289. estimation for them. They're not going to be gone.

  290. Let's get to know them how they are.

  291. Let's get to know them in the different ways.

  292. That That will help us interact better.

  293. So, to dwell with him in understanding, instead of being

  294. bitter and to love, that's the instruction.

  295. Going on in verse 20, it says children obey, your parents and

  296. all things for this is well pleasing to the Lord.

  297. So the instruction to Children is to obey and that's funny.

  298. I had one Cole was younger. He had to write like children

  299. obey your parents in the Lord. For this is right.

  300. Honor, your father and mother for this is the first

  301. commandment with promise Cole got in trouble for doing

  302. something that you shouldn't have done.

  303. I think he, he, you know, my parents knew he was going to do

  304. something, but he told me wouldn't.

  305. But he did anyway, whatever went on it.

  306. Did something. And he had to write like 150

  307. times that whole scripture out, and I just remember pages and

  308. pages of that. But the beautiful thing with

  309. this scripture is it something the child can do to glorify God?

  310. You know, we can wonder, how can I really make God happy?

  311. How can I make God? Feel something that's, that's a

  312. fascinating thought and for a child for someone who's

  313. underneath the parent underneath their roof, it's as simple as

  314. doing what they say and it doesn't feel like that's a big

  315. deal, but Odds is, it makes him happy.

  316. And that's all we need to know. I think to really soak in that

  317. awareness, that it's that simple.

  318. And I can do that today and I can't access God in that way.

  319. I can get to God in a way that will make him happy by by

  320. obeying my parents because for because God sets up parents, as

  321. kind of the first authority figure in our lives to where we

  322. learn Authority. We learn, we learn how to

  323. ultimately handle God. By the way, we handle our

  324. parents by The way we submit to our parents, by the way, we obey

  325. them and show respect to them. And so it is important that we

  326. take that picture going to set up as God the father and learn

  327. how to interact with that presence with our Earthly

  328. fathers, in our Earthly mothers. And there's another scripture.

  329. We're told in the fusion 6 verse 2, it says to honor them we're

  330. told the children on your parents and and the best way to

  331. do that regardless of whether they are in the Lord whether

  332. they're not is to obey them because honoring them Obeying

  333. them shows them honor. Now, as this question States is

  334. ever permissible for a child to disobey his parents and this is

  335. where the Ephesians 6 verse 1 and 2 comes in is yes, I

    Ephesians 6:1

  336. believe. So, if that parent is asking the

  337. child to do something that is contrary to what God wants, God

  338. is always the primary head in our life.

  339. He's the primary figure of authority and so while a parent

  340. may be the head of the child the primary Authority is God now.

  341. In the situation that you have a parent wanting a child to do

  342. something, contrary to God's, will the child is still honoring

  343. the parent by doing what God wants, even if they're not

  344. obeying the parent because of the wrong instruction, they're

  345. getting they're still honoring their parent because as as their

  346. parent, it is their job to prepare them for God.

  347. And so if that child Will obey. God first that is an honor to

  348. the parents in reality, whether the parent is Godly and realizes

  349. it or whether the parent is ungodly and doesn't realize it.

  350. The highest honor that can be given is to First obey, God.

  351. I don't know if I made that clear, but we can honor our

  352. parents and all things regardless of whether their

  353. instruction is wise or unwise. Verse 21, fathers do not provoke

  354. your children less, they become discouraged.

  355. I was I was I was talking to Frank about this.

  356. He said that his favorite description of it is to

  357. exasperate, don't exasperate your kids, don't harp on them in

  358. a way that that kind of Beats them down the bludgers them and

  359. doesn't it doesn't help them grow.

  360. Because as a parent the job of the parent is to nurture and to

  361. raise up a child to build them up and not to take hits at them.

  362. not to take body shots that hopefully make them stronger,

  363. it's to build them up and one of the things he said is that

  364. Parents shouldn't say something to a child that they can't

  365. respond to like name-calling or blood during comments.

  366. That really don't the child is like, what do I say to that?

  367. How do I respond? I can't like improve with with

  368. ridiculing comments. I can't be better with with the

  369. grading comments. So I guess the words he

  370. suggested were to give words that children can respond to and

  371. Obey and improve upon. And this this instruction was

  372. given as I understand as he was telling me from a culture where

  373. the parents had authority to do really too much, they have the

  374. authority to even give or take the child's life.

  375. And so they had to be reined in. They had to learn to wield that

  376. power in that control with, with a Godly attitude instead of a

  377. domineering one. We thank you for listening to
