  1. West, even Shaw, he told us about the fact that the lord

  2. loves Warriors. And I do too.

  3. I know it's a few years ago, my heroes were always those kind of

  4. men, who are confident tough and gritty old to the kind of people

  5. that I like and so very briefly this evening, I want to study

  6. with you an old Story one, that means so much to you and I, and

  7. from it very quickly glean, some lessons, I hope will help us and

  8. the Book of 1st, Samuel chapter 17 and verse 12, the Bible

  9. begins like this and say, it's now.

  10. David was the son of a son of that.

  11. Here for theit of Bethlehem Judah, whose name was Jesse and

  12. he had eight Sons. The man went among men for an

  13. old man of the days of soul and the three eldest sons of Jesse

  14. went and followed salt to the battle and the names of the

  15. three sons that went to battle were a lie of the firstborn and

  16. next unto him, a been a Deb and the third shaima, the three

  17. eldest sons of Jesse as the scripture evidently points out

  18. here, had gone was Saul to fight against the Philistines and

  19. ancient enemy of the children of Israel forty days had now passed

  20. in Jessie, begin. Think now an old man.

  21. Perhaps worried about his children, he began to wonder how

  22. they were how things were going for them.

  23. And so he called the youngest David and he told him to go to

  24. leave the sheep with the keeper and to take with him some

  25. subsidence for his Brethren verse 17.

  26. The scripture says, and Jesse said, to David taken out for thy

  27. Brethren and he fought this parched corn and these 10 Loaves

  28. and run to the camp to thy Brethren and carry these 10

  29. Cheese's under the captain of the thousand.

  30. And look how they fare and take their place.

  31. Jan, so quick is opposed. He makes his way to the Bible

  32. field and begins to hunt up his brothers and look for the m.

  33. And when he finds them, he begins to talk to them and see

  34. how they're doing. Jesse had said some things very

  35. specific, first of all, see how they fare look them over.

  36. Make sure everything is, all right, and take their pledge.

  37. Make sure that if you speak with them you find out that

  38. everything really is, okay. And so that's what he begins to

  39. do. But while he's doing that, the

  40. Bible tells us that he heard just These men have been hearing

  41. for the last 40 days, both morning and evening of

  42. philistine, Down Yonder in the Bible.

  43. As the custom was for the people of that day and age.

  44. Often were they went out to battle, they would find the

  45. Little Valley with a hillside on either side of it and one Army

  46. would get on one side and another Army on the other side

  47. and they would set their armies and array and they would fight a

  48. battle. Well, that's exactly what the

  49. Israelites expected to do until they got there.

  50. The Bible tells us if they're came down a man, Man, by the

  51. name of Goliath. In verse 8, the scripture says

  52. of him and he stood and cried into the armies of Israel and

  53. said unto them. Why are you come out to set your

  54. battle in Array? I'm not, I have Philistine.

  55. And you service to Saul choose you a man for you and let him

  56. come down to me. And if he be able to fight with

  57. me and to kill me, then we be your servants.

  58. But if I Prevail against him and kill him, then shall you be our

  59. servants and serve us? And the Philistine said I defy

  60. the armies of Israel. This day give me.

  61. And that we may fight together. When Saul and all Israel, heard

  62. those words, the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly

  63. afraid, it's amazing to me. The Bible tells us what kind of

  64. man, he was. He gives us those old

  65. measurements of qubits and span and when you do the math, he was

  66. over nine feet tall. The Bible tells us that his coat

  67. of mail that he wore in the battle Wade and our current

  68. numbers today around 150 pounds. Now that's a load to pack around

  69. if you don't believe that. That when you get home you go

  70. out to you feed cheddar suppose all y'all have one of those pick

  71. up three bags of fee and you'll find out what 150 pounds is like

  72. the Bible tells us that the tip of is feared weighed so much.

  73. And in our numbers it was about 18 pounds.

  74. Think about that 18 pounds. This was a monster of a man.

  75. Now, the Bible tells us that David looked on watching and

  76. seeing what would happened that day and I supposed like all

  77. children with child like that. Admiration, he looked up to the

  78. older brothers and I suppose David thought.

  79. You just wait. You wait till alive gets down

  80. there. You'll take care of you.

  81. But alive didn't step up. You wait for a minute dad.

  82. When he comes, that's the end of, you know, been a dad, shaima

  83. shama. He's the one.

  84. He'll take care of you. I suppose that David looked up

  85. with childlike. Admiration thinking surely would

  86. have my brother will take care of this.

  87. You know, that's the way a little brothers.

  88. Are I've got two boys separated by 15 years difference.

  89. We one time. Are you eating supper?

  90. And my daughter Caitlin, my oldest daughter overtaken with a

  91. misguided moment of emotion reached over and grabbed groans

  92. hand. She said I love you and Ron said

  93. I love Sam. Well, that's the way little

  94. brothers are and I expect that's what David was doing.

  95. He was waiting. He was looking up, surely, they

  96. will come, but they did, and not only that, as David begins to

  97. talk to the rest of these cowards who had fled back to

  98. their 10, he found out something very amazing as well.

  99. There have been somewhat of an incentive for these children of

  100. Israel as a matter of fact, in verse 24, Scripture says and all

  101. the men of Israel when they saw the man fled from him and were

  102. sore. Afraid.

  103. And the men of Israel said, have you seen this man?

  104. That has come up. Sure did it.

  105. If I Israel has he come up and it shall be that the man who

  106. killed the man, the king will enrich him with great riches and

  107. will give his daughter and make his father's house, free, and

  108. Israel, David was amazed the Bible says, in verse 26 and

  109. David speak to the men that stood by him saying, what should

  110. be done to the man that killed this Philistine and takes away.

  111. The reproach from Israel for who is this uncircumcised

  112. philistine? Steam that he should defy the

  113. armies of the Living God and the people answered him after the

  114. same manner saying, so shall it be done for him, that killeth

  115. him. And so, David begins to speak to

  116. every man around him and I suppose he's looking for a man

  117. who would step out there and take the life as he turns 21.

  118. Now, what will be done. Well, the Kings going to enrich

  119. him and make his father's house free, and give his daughter to

  120. wife yet. That man would not go out to the

  121. next man. Now, what's going to happen to

  122. the man that killed was this uncircumcised Philistine.

  123. Well, Come on Reggie Hammond. Give his daughter to wife and

  124. make this house free. It is related vein, David

  125. searches for a man who would kill the Philistine.

  126. None would go finally alive but his embarrassment who had been

  127. standing there watching all of this.

  128. He came to David, I suppose he snatched him up by his arm,

  129. begin to drag him off and began, to chew him out.

  130. In verse 28, the scripture says, and Allied the eldest brother

  131. when he heard heard, when he spake unto them and lives.

  132. Anger was kindled against Dave. And he said, why can't his now

  133. down? Hither and we're them has.

  134. Now left those few sheep on the Wilderness.

  135. I Do by Pride of the notice of thine heart with our come down,

  136. the town might have see, the Bible, I suppose.

  137. David was used to this, he'd been chewed out by other older

  138. brothers. Now that's where it works to,

  139. with older and younger brothers. You know, sometimes the older

  140. brother gets a little big for his britches and he kind of

  141. steps into that parental role. David knew what it was like to

  142. be chewed out and you remember what he said when he looked up

  143. and alive. He said, what about now bond is

  144. there not a Cause Said David's in Wonder stand at the

  145. something. These other man did not.

  146. There was a reason that Goliath had to die.

  147. There was a reason that this Philistine had to be destroyed

  148. and that was the fact that there was a reproach on Israel, these

  149. were not coming every day men, these Ruiz relax.

  150. These were not Gentiles. These were Israelites, they

  151. serve the almighty God Of Heaven.

  152. Their God was not like the Pagan Idols of the Philistines or any

  153. other land know, their God. Punished his enemies with every

  154. Manner of pestilence. You can imagine it was their God

  155. who led them out of the land of Egypt and parted the Red Sea

  156. before them. It was their God who fed them in

  157. the wilderness with man, I'm with dub.

  158. It was their God who parted the Waters of the Jordan when they

  159. crossed over into this land of promise and it was their God who

  160. had marched before them has. Granted them Victory after

  161. Victory. And now in David's horror, it

  162. was their God who was being disrespected.

  163. And now, these cowards stood, By mouthy Philistine standing down

  164. there in the battlefield intimidating, every one of them.

  165. And here's what David understood.

  166. This is a reproach and it has something has to be done.

  167. They would not go. Well, he stirs such a stink, the

  168. Bible tells us that finally, the king hears about.

  169. Now, Saul knew David David had already been before Saul and it

  170. played his heart before him and soothe his troubled mind.

  171. And the Bible tells us this and when the words were heard, which

  172. day, It's fake they were Hearst them before Saul and he sent for

  173. him and David said to Saul at no man's heart fail because of him

  174. that I serve him going fight this Philistine and Saul said to

  175. David are not able to go against this Philistine to file with him

  176. for our buddy Youth and he a man of war from as use and David

  177. said, unto Saul died serving kept his father.

  178. She and there came a lion and a bear and took out took a lamb

  179. out of the flock and I went after him and smote him and

  180. delivered it out of his mouth. And when he arose against me, I

  181. called him by his beard and smote him and slew him.

  182. And I served in Slough, both The Lion and the bear and this

  183. uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them.

  184. Seeing it defied, the armies of the Living.

  185. God David said, moreover, the Lord that delivered me out of

  186. the Paul the line and out of all the bear.

  187. He will deliver me out of the hand of this philistine.

  188. It's all said unto David go and the Lord be with thee.

  189. Yes David understood. He understood that God just as

  190. God had blessed him and cared for him.

  191. He knew that God would continue to do that.

  192. He had an abiding confidence and Abiding Faith.

  193. In God. The Bible tells us that Saul

  194. began to persuade him. Listen you're going to go and

  195. fight at least take my armor if you ever thought about this?

  196. David's a young man show He said last night, he was a teenager

  197. saw a grown man. The Bible tells us it is

  198. coronation was Head and Shoulders above everyone else.

  199. He was a big man himself kind of makes me wonder, why this big

  200. man didn't March down there to face their big man.

  201. We start to see something of the crumbling character of Saul, and

  202. so he tells him take my armor so they begin to put the armor on

  203. David and they begin to lace it up and take that to build the

  204. lake sale and reduce it down to a schmedium.

  205. I'm sure. And by the time they get it all

  206. cinched up, I'm sure. David looked like a terrapin

  207. huerto sack and he said, I can't take this, I'm not prove this

  208. armor, I can't have this and so off, he goes, the Bible tells us

  209. he began to make his way down that Hillside.

  210. And as he went along that Hillside, he began together some

  211. Stones. You know what he took with you?

  212. Do you remember what he took with him?

  213. He had to Shepherds bag carried his possibles in there.

  214. You know, he had his staff in one.

  215. Hand and his sling that slang is amazing thing.

  216. Now the, when I was a little boy my dad made me one of them.

  217. That's not like you, we think about a slingshot piece of

  218. leather whole about. So so wide with a string or a

  219. piece of leather tied on one side and on the other side and

  220. the way we did is you tie one piece of string around your

  221. wrist and you'd hold the other piece of string and you'd put a

  222. rock in there or whatever's handy and you take that and you

  223. Wind that up and you would send it.

  224. Oh, Mase it's Force. You kids are out of school.

  225. That's an amazing arts and crafts project for you this

  226. summer. Now, I never was as good as

  227. David, I got to where I could hit paint cans and Stray Cats.

  228. Although me and my neighbor, we did manage to hit a power

  229. transformer on a power pole and knocked out electricity, 27 of

  230. the neighbors down the road from us and mama was so proud, but

  231. David was a master David knew what he was doing.

  232. The Bible tells us what he made his way down there.

  233. And finally met fit Goliath, they God begins to insult him.

  234. The scripture says And the Philistine, Senator David?

  235. Am I a dog without coming to me with staves and the Philistine

  236. cursed David by his gods. And the Philistine said to David

  237. come to me and I will give thy flesh and the fowls of the air

  238. and the beasts of the field. I love David.

  239. Listen to what David said. Now comes to me with a sword

  240. with the spirit, with The Shield.

  241. But I come to the end of the name, of the Lord of hosts, the

  242. god of the armies of Israel. Whom thou Hast defied this day,

  243. will the Lord deliver the into my hand?

  244. And I will smite thee and take the head from thee and I will

  245. give the carcasses of Host of the Philistines.

  246. This they do the fowls of the air out of the wild beasts of

  247. the earth that all the Earth. May know that there is a God in

  248. Israel. And that all this will simply

  249. may know that the Lord saves with not with sword.

  250. And spear for the battle is the Lord's and he will give it into

  251. your hands in my mind's eye. I can see David as he begins to

  252. head toward Goliath. First two steps are measured,

  253. but then his strides begin to grow until ultimately David is

  254. racing toward him at full strength.

  255. The scripture tells us, he takes one of those smooth stones, and

  256. puts it in that swing. And as he begins to make ready,

  257. too. Fire his shot.

  258. I suppose had to the sudden stop David took the momentum.

  259. He had built up. It began the soles of his feet

  260. and travel through his body until awesomely the shot was

  261. fired. The Bible tells us that it found

  262. its Mark in Goliath's forehead and pointedly says it's sucking

  263. and Goliath fell before him dead.

  264. There was no sword and David saying.

  265. And so David ran to him, the scripture tells us they took

  266. Goliath's sword. The cut Goliath's head off.

  267. And in my wild imagination, I can only imagine what it must

  268. have been like, when David reached down and grabbed those

  269. nappy oily, curls of that, Philistine and hoist his his

  270. head before the Israelites. And they begin to understand our

  271. God. Save is not with sword and

  272. spear. The Bible tells us the

  273. Philistines were put to flight very quickly.

  274. I want to notice with you a couple of lessons here, that I

  275. think that you and I should glean from this and that we We

  276. should check a with first of all, David points out.

  277. The fact that there is a cause must be defended, there is a

  278. cause today, there always has been Israel.

  279. Here was being humiliated, her lands were being threatened and

  280. the Army was too afraid to do anything about it.

  281. David asked the most appropriate question when he said, is there

  282. not a cause. And so I say today Brethren, he

  283. is there not a cause in which you and I are engaged.

  284. Is there not a cause it's worth our work, our effort and our

  285. defense, the Bible teaches. Us in Romans chapter 1 and verse

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  286. 16. The Apostle said, for I am not

  287. ashamed of the gospel of Christ for it is the power of God unto

  288. salvation to everyone that believeth to the Jew first and

  289. also to the Greek. Yes.

  290. Today, that is a Cause worth defending.

  291. The Apostle. Defined it in First Corinthians,

    1 Corinthians 15:1–4

  292. 15 verses 1 through 4 as being the very fact of the life, the

  293. death, the burial, and the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

  294. And that's a story. The world needs to hear.

  295. That's a Cause worth defending today.

  296. And more critics today, assail the story of Christ and the

  297. scripture itself, and that's the cause we please.

  298. It's the one that makes the difference for a man.

  299. Literally the difference between Heaven or Hell?

  300. The difference between saved being saved and being lost

  301. forever? Thus the scripture says in 2nd,

  302. Corinthians 4 and verse 3. But if our gospel be hid, it is

  303. hid to them that are lost in whom the God of this world has

  304. blinded the minds of them which believe not lest the light of

  305. the Glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God should

  306. shine. Unto them?

  307. Yes, are closed. Today is work defending.

  308. Our calls today is worth declaring.

  309. But secondly, to we defend the church.

  310. The church today is worth defense.

  311. This glorious Kingdom of Heaven on Earth.

  312. The Bible teaches us in Acts chapter 2 and verse 47 praising,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  313. God, and having favor with all the people and the Lord added to

  314. the church daily. Such as should be saved

  315. yesterday. My friends.

  316. The church is the cause we plead.

  317. She's worth working for she's worth laboring.

  318. For their critics today. Both inside the kingdom and

  319. outside the kingdom, who wants to look down on the church.

  320. And you want to downplay the church and the importance of the

  321. church she's worth defending today.

  322. Now, I realize today, it's only a grammatical thing, but it

  323. absolutely gets under my hide. When I see somebody spell out

  324. the Church of Christ and they put a little see on Church.

  325. As if 2D emphasized, the importance of the church,

  326. listen, friends. That's the Kingdom of Heaven on

  327. Earth. And if men are going to be saved

  328. today, they're going to be members of that Kingdom.

  329. And we need. Not be valued.

  330. No, I understand the principle, you know, we want to emphasize

  331. Christ in the name Church of Christ.

  332. Well that's good and that's important.

  333. Man, won't be safe without the church.

  334. You can't be saved with Christ and without the church, it

  335. doesn't work that way. Now, I understand it's a

  336. grammatical issue, but there's an underlying theme in there to

  337. my friends and don't be fooled by Wiley.

  338. Folks who simply want to say tell you that it's merely a

  339. matter of advertising. Yes.

  340. The Kingdom of Heaven is a Cause worth fighting for, but

  341. secondly, I want you to notice today that David had Faith, you

  342. know what drove him. Down in that Valley, faith,

  343. faith. He believed in God and you

  344. believe in God protecting power. I've often thought about David,

  345. you know, we don't have very many bear at home.

  346. You don't have very many mountain lions either, at least

  347. not these kind. And so I've been reduced to

  348. hunting wild hog every once in a while.

  349. You'll catch an old wild Sal 200, 250 pounds, or so, who

  350. don't understand that. This is really just a I'm just

  351. going to catch you and tie you up and catch you my dogs and

  352. we're going to turn you loose and go on our merry way.

  353. She don't understand that. And so, when I get ahold of her,

  354. she's trying to eat me alive. And almost every time I think, I

  355. hope David didn't feel this way. But I'm scared to death.

  356. The only thing that really keeps me from turning loose is number

  357. one, the abiding fear of being mauled.

  358. Number two having to tell my wife meet me at the emergency

  359. room, I've done something stupid.

  360. Well isn't that a way for David? David had faith and David said,

  361. just as God delivered me from The Lion and from the bear, he

  362. will deliver me from this Philistine.

  363. Let me ask you today. Where is your faith?

  364. Glad you David's Faith. Led him to a valley of victory

  365. of valley of Victory. Where's your faith?

  366. LED you do, you have faith enough today to live the truth?

  367. You have faith enough to live the truth in front of friends

  368. and in front of critics I've got to hurry on very quickly.

  369. You know, we've been talking to these young men.

  370. They did an amazing job this morning I think I didn't see a

  371. dud and a bunch. They really did good and you

  372. know here and like all the young people's meetings that you will

  373. go to peep they're going to pet and Ponte.

  374. You have good. You did you mama's going to

  375. flutter around you? And your daddy's going to March

  376. around with pride and all the Brethren.

  377. Going to tell you the greatest thing since sliced bread and you

  378. all did very well. But it's one thing to preach the

  379. truth where the fans are. And it's another thing to preach

  380. the truth with the critics alter its own, don't you understand

  381. today? It's going to take some Faith.

  382. Some confidence of what you're preaching is the truth of God's

  383. Divine will and I pray, you'll do that very thing.

  384. Just as I do for all our preachers you have faith in

  385. after enough today. To confront are and false

  386. teaching yes, false teachers still are among us today just as

  387. they were in the first century. And you know what?

  388. It's going to take to confront them.

  389. Faith confidence in God's word. That is true, right?

  390. And unchanging, it's going to take Faith, he have faith enough

  391. today to preach the truth and to live the truth in your everyday

  392. life. You're going to have friends and

  393. neighbors. You're going to have workmates

  394. today, who don't agree with what you do, what you stand for, how

  395. you live, What You Preach, what you practice and you, you are,

  396. they just don't like it. You know what?

  397. It's going to take to live it out before them.

  398. And to change their mind, it's going to take Faith.

  399. You're going to have to be convinced that what you're doing

  400. is absolutely right. So I ask you again today.
