  1. I'm going to be reading this morning from acts, the

  2. eighteenth chapter and fascinating set of passages.

  3. Here acts the eighteenth chapter starting in verse 24, is it

  4. work? All right and obviously I'm

  5. heard here. I don't need to be tied.

  6. There is this okay if I stand down here and speak but actually

  7. 18th chapter, the last few verses of the chapter starting

  8. with verse 24 and going on down through verse 28 is where we

  9. want to take our text. There are many fascinating

  10. passages and many fascinating characters in the scripture

  11. there. And I've never been one to say.

  12. This is one of my favorites or this is a favorite.

  13. I've never been one to call Favorites because the next time

  14. I read something else, then I have another favorite there in

  15. that it because it just keeps going like that way.

  16. But here's a man that's in a fascinating individual.

  17. That's introduced to us in this passage here in Acts the

  18. eighteenth chapter. We don't know anything about him

  19. before this time. But it's a man by the name of a

  20. paulus. And here, we read these words

  21. Upon A Certain Jew named Apollo's born in Alexandria and

  22. eloquent, man, and mighty in the scriptures came to Ephesus.

  23. This man was instructed in the way of the Lord, and being

  24. fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently, the

  25. things of the Lord knowing only the baptism of John and he began

  26. to speak boldly in the synagogue, whom win Aquila and

  27. Priscilla had heard. They took him unto them and

  28. expounded unto him the way of God more.

  29. Perfectly anyway, he was disposed to pass into aquella,

  30. the Brethren wrote exhorting, the disciples to receive him,

  31. who, when he was come help them much, who have believed through

  32. Grace for, he mightily, convince the Jews and that publicly

  33. showing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ and borrowed.

  34. My mistakes. So weeds here in Reading from

  35. the King James version this morning here.

  36. So introduced to us this man by the name of a Us Bible says he

  37. was a Jew but he has a Greek name.

  38. And he was from Alexandria. Alexandria was a hotbed of the

  39. Jewish of Jews in Egypt, and Northern Egypt, there over in

  40. over in Africa. And here was a man.

  41. The Bible says, he was eloquent, he was mighty in the scriptures

  42. and he came to Ephesus and taught the T, the, the teaching

  43. about the Lord here to these people.

  44. So, here is a man who is obviously from his background, a

  45. very religious man. He was Heritage a Jew.

  46. He had this Greek name. So you see some influence here

  47. of him and he comes up to Ephesus.

  48. Ephesus is as the crow flies about 200 miles, north of

  49. Alexandria, if I can, if I can use a rough estimate there, but

  50. a crow would only fly there because you sure can't drive

  51. there. You sure can't walk there

  52. because it's across the Mediterranean Sea.

  53. And I don't know. And we don't know how that he

  54. came the the route that he came to come to Ephesus but he comes

  55. to Ephesus and Ephesus is a place where the Apostle Paul has

  56. been with two of his cohorts that is with two of his people

  57. that he co-workers in that sense.

  58. Aquila and Priscilla were there, they had come there, they had

  59. preached the gospel there, they worked in the synagogue there

  60. and then Paul left and had gone to Jerusalem as I understand it

  61. here from the Pictures here going into Judea and then he was

  62. going to come back later. The Bible says that a policy

  63. appears on the scene and we understand this about him here

  64. that he accurately had a knowledge had an accurate

  65. knowledge of Jesus notice here. And verse 25 is a Jew named

  66. Apollo's born in Alexandria. Eloquent man.

  67. Mighty in the scriptures, came to Jesus, as a man was

  68. instructed, in the way of the Lord, and being fervent in the

  69. spirit, he spake, and taught diligently, the things of the

  70. Lord. But he knew only the baptism of

  71. John, so it qualifies what he said and what he knew about the

  72. Lord, because notice it says, he was he instructed in the way of

  73. the Lord, he talked accurately or diligently, the things of the

  74. Lord. But he knew only the baptism of

  75. John. So I think we can safely say in

  76. conclude from the scriptures that that last phrase that he

  77. only knew the baptism of John. As a qualifier to his knowledge

  78. of the Lord. Now, we know about the Lord, and

  79. we know the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  80. And this is what he understood. It seems like we have.

  81. You know, the Bible says in First Corinthians, the fifteenth

  82. chapter speaks concerning the gospel.

  83. The Apostle Paul says, and he's talks about the complete Gospel

  84. of Jesus Christ. He says, I declare unto you the

  85. gospel, which I preached unto you which you've received and

  86. wherein you stand by which you are saved if ye keep in memory.

  87. What? I preached unto you unless I

  88. believed you unless you have believed in vain What is that

  89. gospel for? I delivered unto you that which

  90. I also received, how that Christ died for our sins, according to

  91. the scriptures, how that he was buried and that how he rose

  92. again the third day, according to the scriptures.

  93. And so the essential facts of the Gospel, the death, the

  94. burial, the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

  95. All of this done in fulfillment, of God's word and fulfillment of

  96. the scripture. Now did a Polish know, all of

  97. that. And that is that what he taught?

  98. Well, he knew it apparently he taught it, but he taught it in

  99. perfectly. In the Bible in Acts and Romans

  100. a sixth chapter, we speak concerning baptism because that

  101. was a problem that Apollo's had notice.

  102. It says there in that 25th verse he taught accurately, or taught

  103. diligently, the things of the Lord, but he only knew the

  104. baptism of John. So apparently, he did not know

  105. the things of that. We understand in Romans the 6th

  106. chapter verses 3 and 4. No, you're not that so many of

  107. us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his

  108. death. Therefore we are buried with him

  109. by baptism into death that like as Christ was raised up from the

  110. dead by the glory of the father, even so we also should walk in

  111. newness of life. So, apparently, he understood

  112. some things about the Lord, but I don't know that he understood

  113. completely about the Lord. Obviously, he did not because he

  114. did not understand these things about baptism.

  115. Baptism in Jesus Christ because that was not under the baptism

  116. of John there. And that's what he knew about.

  117. Baptism the baptism of John and so there is some completeness

  118. about what he knew, but some incompleteness about what he

  119. knew we run into people like that.

  120. Today when we talk to them, there are people who they know

  121. the gospel. They know the church, they know

  122. about the church but yet at the same time, their understanding,

  123. and their background and their past is the worship of the Or

  124. the service of the church is different is different.

  125. Sometimes it's lacking in what the Bible teaches about, the

  126. worship of the church. And so these are people who are

  127. kind of like a paulus. There are people today, who

  128. speak about the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and they talked about

  129. Jesus and they understand the death burial and resurrection of

  130. Jesus, but they speak different things.

  131. Concerning baptism, they say, baptism is only is only a form,

  132. is only a pattern of the death burial Resurrection.

  133. Jesus Christ has No relationship really is for forgiveness of

  134. sins and so they're kind of like a policin that they know things

  135. and they know accurately many things about Jesus but there's

  136. some imperfections about their understandings there.

  137. And that's kind of how he was here.

  138. Notice what the Bible says about him, the Bible says, some

  139. glowing things about this, man. He was instructed, he taught And

  140. so he was perhaps one of the Disciples of the first

  141. commission that was given in Matthew the tenth chapter.

  142. Remember Matthew, the 10th chapter Jesus calls, some of his

  143. disciples, a number of his disciples to him and he says

  144. this, he called him, he sent them forth and he says, go not

  145. into the way of the Gentiles and into the city of the Samaritans,

  146. neither do not enter there, but he says go to the lost sheep of

  147. the House of Israel. And so, he called the twelve and

  148. he sent them out. And they went out and they

  149. preached the gospel of Us, that was known at that time, that he

  150. instructed them to that. The Messiah is here, the kingdom

  151. is coming, he taught them and that they needed to repent.

  152. They needed to turn to God. They need to turn back to God,

  153. because because wonderful things are going to happen.

  154. And that's what happened. That's what went out.

  155. And perhaps a policy was one who was perhaps influenced by them

  156. or by some who had heard them teach their down in Alexandria

  157. there and that's where he came from.

  158. We really don't know that much about about.

  159. Paulus about where about that except what is.

  160. So shown here in these scriptures at this point, this

  161. man had natural gifts Now, sometimes we read in the

  162. scriptures and we read about those who in the first century,

  163. who preach the gospel, the apostles, they preached, the

  164. gospel, and they would speak by inspiration and work miracles

  165. and they spoke concerning wrap up by Revelation from God.

  166. God told them what to say, and they would say that.

  167. And remember, that's what Jesus told his disciples when his

  168. Apostles when they were brought before, Kings and rulers.

  169. And when they were brought before, the leaders of the Jews

  170. that they were, Were simply to speak what God had told him to

  171. say. Speak.

  172. Which what will be given to them in that our apology didn't have

  173. that ability? Apollo's, could not work

  174. miracles. How do we know that?

  175. Well, let's just use some logical reasoning here to

  176. understand where a policy was Apollo's.

  177. Could not work miracles because those who work miracles were

  178. those who had the hands of the Apostles laid upon him.

  179. Now, that's very clear from scripture there and acts the 8th

  180. chapter verses 14 through 19. Remember when Philip goes down

  181. to Sumerian preaches, the gospel to them.

  182. The Bible says there in that. Passage that, when the apostles

  183. that were at Jerusalem, when they heard that Samaria had

  184. received the word of God, they sent Peter and John who, when

  185. they were come down, they prayed for them that they might receive

  186. the holy spirit for Shetty has fallen upon.

  187. None of them, only they were baptized in the name of the Lord

  188. Jesus. Then they laid their hands on

  189. them and they received the Holy Spirit.

  190. So that's how the Holy Spirit the miraculous abilities of the

  191. Holy Spirit, were imparted unto people in those days through the

  192. laying on of the Apostles hands. And I believe that I think we

  193. can be very sure about that Apollo has had not had his had

  194. the apostles hands laid on him or in Apostles hands laid on

  195. him, why? Because we had had an Apostles

  196. hands laid on him. He would have known Better than

  197. to preach the baptism of John. He would have known the Full

  198. Gospel of Jesus and he could have preached in any would have

  199. preached, it accurately there. So he did not have that ability.

  200. He did not have that knowledge. Therefore he did not have that

  201. ability and so this is how he was now.

  202. Now, this makes him me like him even more because he preached.

  203. The gospel and he preached the word of God, like you and I

  204. preach it. Now we're not inspired and we

  205. don't have miraculous abilities from the Holy Spirit in order to

  206. preach the gospel. We don't have Revelation from

  207. God through the holy spirit for us to preach the word of God.

  208. Neither did a policies. And so look what he says.

  209. Look what it says this man was instructed in the way of the

  210. Lord. Verse 24, he was mighty in the

  211. scriptures. He was an eloquent, man.

  212. He was a good speaker. And notice here, later in verse

  213. 28, he mightily convinced the Jews that publicly showing by

  214. the scriptures, that Jesus was the Christ, was the Messiah.

  215. So what a Polish would do is through his knowledge and his

  216. study of the scriptures as ability to teach and persuade,

  217. he would speak the word of God based upon what he read, but

  218. what was read in the Old Testament scriptures and he

  219. would teach and show that Jesus fulfilled, that picture of the

  220. Messiah, that's what we do. And that's how we do it through

  221. studying the scriptures and then we explain these things about

  222. the Lord. He taught just like we teach

  223. today. So that makes me like him even

  224. more. That makes me like him even

  225. more. I don't think I could speak like

  226. he could, obviously, I don't think I owe.

  227. You know, he was a man who was eloquent and the scriptures

  228. eloquent man. Mighty in the scriptures.

  229. I don't know that I qualify in either of those cat those

  230. categories but he came about it the same way that I would come

  231. about it. And that's what we understand

  232. here about a policy in this. So this makes me like him even

  233. more. There, he would had a profound

  234. understanding the scriptures. He was enthusiastic in

  235. proclaiming. The Lord, the Bible says here in

  236. this, but he had this Gap in his knowledge.

  237. He did not fully know the things of the Lord there in this

  238. situation. So we have these two people that

  239. are introduced to us are here, he began to speak boldly in the

  240. synagogue and verse 26. Whom went Aquila and Priscilla,

  241. heard this heard him, they took him to him and expounded in him

  242. the way of God more perfectly. So Aquila and Priscilla to of

  243. the co-workers of the Apostle, Paul Aquila, the husband of

  244. Priscilla the wife, they took him and they taught him.

  245. I don't think they caught him publicly in the synagogue but

  246. they took him. Aside, is the indication here in

  247. this here, you have a woman a woman also helping to teach a

  248. man in this. So that's a scriptural thing.

  249. Obviously, we understand from the scriptures, that women are

  250. not to teach in the church that they're not to speak in the

  251. church, and they're not to take a teaching role in that or

  252. Speaking role in that. And here we find that they do

  253. have a role to play. And here is a role.

  254. By example that Priscilla played here in this in helping to teach

  255. him the way of God, more completely more completely, he

  256. was incomplete in his knowledge. And so this is what we learn

  257. about him here in this and this is what we have taught to us.

  258. This role here that was played by Aquila and Priscilla in this.

  259. Now. At this point verse 27, it says

  260. he was disposed to pass into a KO.

  261. Now, he was over here in, in in Asia, Asia Minor.

  262. There at Ephesus, he wanted to go over into a KO, which was

  263. over in Europe. It's where Greece is, and

  264. basically what he's talking about is Corinth, we don't know

  265. why he wanted to go to Corinth, but yet it says he was disposed

  266. to go there. And so when he went the Brethren

  267. from Ephesus wrote to Corinth and encourage them to accept

  268. him. You know, sometimes that's what

  269. we do as well. With people, they go into a new

  270. area, we want Brethren there to accept and we write him a letter

  271. of commendation or letter of recommendation.

  272. Sometimes, there's letters that are written that are not letters

  273. of recommendation, in that sense there.

  274. But do we have, always have to write a letter to send somebody

  275. over somewhere. I don't think we do because we

  276. can sometimes pick up a telephone in there or as we do

  277. now, take out our cell phone and send a text to somebody there

  278. and tell them this is a good brother.

  279. You know, please. Yeah, except him here.

  280. But here it gave introduction to it.

  281. And so he goes to aquella in. The Bible says here that he

  282. went, they hear they exhorted the brother and to receive him.

  283. And when Apollo's was come to aquella, he helped them much who

  284. had believed through Grace. Now here we understand and this

  285. goes back to the 18th chapter, the earlier part of the 18th

  286. chapter will, Paul was at Corinth, Paul goes to Corinth

  287. there and what does he do? The Bible says that when he was

  288. at Corinth, he reasoned verse 4 of Acts 18.

  289. He reasoned in the synagogue, every Sabbath and persuaded the

  290. Jews and the Greeks. And when Silas and Timothy came

  291. Paul was pressed in the spirit. He testified to the Jews that

  292. Jesus was Christ. And so he became more bold when

  293. he had his backups with him. There, I don't think it's a

  294. matter of Boldness. I think it was a matter of

  295. planning that there was more work, that would be brought up

  296. with Timothy our yes, with Timothy and and Silas that came

  297. there. And so this is when he began to

  298. fully, press the gospel and prove to them, that Jesus is the

  299. messiah. Verse 6 says, when they oppose

  300. themselves, that is the people in the Jewish synagogue there in

  301. Corinth, when they oppose themselves and blasphemed.

  302. That is they really, they defeated their own spiritual

  303. purposes in how they reacted to the preaching of the Gospel of

  304. Jesus Christ here, by Paul Paul shook his raiment, he said unto

  305. them, your blood be upon your own heads.

  306. I'm clean. I will henceforth turn unto the

  307. Gentiles. So, Paul took the gospel first

  308. to the Jews. And then he took it to the

  309. Gentiles after that he gave them opportunity first to do this.

  310. And what was he doing? What was he doing when he

  311. preached to them? Well let's look at the 17th

  312. chapter because I think it's a good example of what Paul was

  313. doing their acts of 17th chapter.

  314. Here is Paul and thessalonica verse 2 and 3 Paul as his manner

  315. was This is Paul how he customarily operated when he

  316. went into a area where the gospel had not gone before.

  317. And so if they Paul did it at thessalonica, that's probably

  318. what Paul did at Corinth or what he was doing there.

  319. How did he behave? How did he, what was, what was

  320. his plan of operation, as his manner was he went unto them in

  321. the synagogue there. According to verse 13 Sabbath

  322. days, he's reason with them out of the scriptures, he reasoned

  323. with him out of the scriptures. Now, it's not the New Testament

  324. scriptures, but the Old Testament scriptures there.

  325. He use the prophecies, he used the teachings of the Old

  326. Testament and he reasoned with them.

  327. Paul would read them or they would read them and he would

  328. talk to them reasonably logically about what the

  329. implications and the teachings of the scriptures were verse 2.

  330. Verse 3 says Paul did this, he opened and alleged he opened it.

  331. Alleged that is his argument and is documentation backing that

  332. up. He says his argument and is back

  333. as documentation, backing that up, is that Christ had to suffer

  334. and Rise Again from the dead. The Jews.

  335. Often times, did not believe that about the Messiah.

  336. They wanted a Victorious. Messiah, not a suffering

  337. Messiah, but this is what Paul said.

  338. This was his argument, and this is what he proved to, then, he

  339. opened an alleged that the Messiah had to suffer and to

  340. rise again, on the third day. That is, that's what the

  341. scriptures. Taught here.

  342. And that this Jesus whom I preached unto you is the Messiah

  343. is the Christ. And so that's how he did it.

  344. He's taught them, he taught them correctly, the Prophecies of the

  345. Old Testament and then he showed how that Jesus fit the profile

  346. fit, the teaching of the Old Testament prophets there.

  347. And that's how I convinced many of the Jews that Jesus was the

  348. Christ and that they need to follow after Christ.

  349. That's what he tried to do in Corinth.

  350. In the Bible says that when he did that, there it says They

  351. oppose themselves and they blasphemed they didn't like it

  352. at all. I didn't like it at all.

  353. And so Paul turns away from him and goes to the Gentiles, but

  354. there was enough to start a little congregation.

  355. Apparently they're at Corinth, Paul stays there for some time

  356. and this is where a policy goes and you know how to polish was

  357. doing Paul Apollo's was using the same methods that Paul was

  358. using. In teaching, that's what we just

  359. said there. Now the difference is or

  360. difference is Paul had the benefit of inspiration from God.

  361. On his side Apollo's, did not paulus taught like you and I

  362. did. It.

  363. And so a Polish goes there. The Brethren have been

  364. encouraged to accept him and receive him verse 27 of Acts 18.

  365. He says, when he was come He helped them much, which had

  366. believed through Grace. So Paul is came there at Corinth

  367. and he was a great help to the church there in Corinth because

  368. notice what happens here in verse 28, for he mightily

  369. convinced the Jews and that publicly showing by the

  370. scriptures that Jesus was the Messiah was the Christ.

  371. And so he did it. What?

  372. Paul opened an alleged there? Apollo's was the closer I guess

  373. you could say there because he put it over the top for many of

  374. them. Their and apparently he was very

  375. successful in doing that. And so, this is some things we

  376. have about a policy that's not all we read about a policy in

  377. scripture. He's mentioned, if I'm not

  378. mistaken in 10 different verses in the New Testament scriptures,

  379. where we have him next, is, we have him next in, in First

  380. Corinthians, 1st Corinthians. Chapter chapter one.

  381. Who's talked about here, he's mentioned here in this.

  382. Passage. And so I want to turn over there

  383. and let's read some of that because there are some things to

  384. be gained from the teaching about a policy or the mention of

  385. a policy here in these passages. Here the Paul writes to the

  386. church at Corinth Church of Corinth.

  387. As we just said, is the church that Apollo Swit to and help

  388. them a lot by his teaching there after he was straightened out,

  389. after he was straightened out. Before I get there.

  390. There's a question that burns in my head.

  391. When I read this in Acts the eighteenth chapter, if you are

  392. returned, the First Corinthians, just keep your finger there or

  393. Mark, that will come back to that.

  394. But right now, I want to go back to ask the 18th chapter because

  395. I have this, in my, in my sketchy notes Here.

  396. I don't want to talk about this. The question is this?

  397. Aquila and Priscilla taught a policy of the way of the Lord,

  398. more perfectly. Apollo's came knew only the

  399. baptism of John. When a policy has taught the way

  400. of the Lord more perfectly. Was he re-baptized you read

  401. acts? The 18th chapter, doesn't say

  402. that. But you relax, the 19th Chapter.

  403. And here's what we do, read. AXA 19th Chapter, the first few

  404. verses. The first five verses it says it

  405. came to pass. This is sometime later.

  406. Came time is sometime later. Came to pass when Apollo's was

  407. at Corinth. Paul.

  408. This is the Apostle Paul returns to Ephesus.

  409. He did not return by land but he passed the upper Coast.

  410. It says he passed Inland there and came to Ephesus back to

  411. Ephesus. He came to Ephesus, he found

  412. some disciples. There were there.

  413. And he said unto them, have you received the Holy Spirit since

  414. you believed? They said it to him.

  415. We have not so much as heard. Whether there be any Holy

  416. Spirit. He asked them under what then

  417. were you baptized? They Senator John's baptism. so,

  418. With these disciples. Who were followers?

  419. Of what a paulus had preached were these some converts of a

  420. policies there in Ephesus, we don't know.

  421. We don't know, Ephesus. Was a metropolitan City.

  422. There would be probably several synagogues a number of

  423. synagogues in the city of Ephesus.

  424. This may have been a different synagogue that was not even

  425. connected where a policy had been where he had been taught

  426. the way of the Lord more perfectly with the cool and

  427. Priscilla. Maybe may not be.

  428. We don't know at this point. But the thing is that the

  429. Apostle Paul talks to them about this.

  430. What were you baptized into? They sent it to John's baptism.

  431. And so Paul says, this about John's baptism, Paul said, John

  432. truly baptized with the baptism of repentance saying to the

  433. people that they should believe on him, who should come after

  434. him that is on Christ Jesus. So, here was the problem, they

  435. were baptized into John's baptism but baptism of

  436. repentance. If you read back in Mark, the

  437. first chapter, it was a baptism of repentance for the remission

  438. of sins. They're so remission of sins was

  439. even Associated and affiliated with John's baptism.

  440. But it was all conditional upon their acceptance of Jesus.

  441. When Jesus came notice he says there, John baptized the

  442. baptism, repentance saying that you should believe on Jesus on

  443. him and she come after that. Is on Christ Jesus.

  444. They had not done that and that was the problem with the

  445. policies baptism here either. He did not know that Christ had

  446. come or somehow it was, there was a problem here with this.

  447. He preached the baptism of John But not fully to the acceptance

  448. of Jesus. Apparently, that's what had

  449. happened here. This was after the resurrection

  450. of Jesus Christ. This is after the resurrection

  451. of Jesus Christ, is after the time of which now Jesus is now

  452. claimed as the Messiah, as the Risen and ascended Messiah.

  453. Now the king over God's kingdom and they somehow had missed part

  454. of that. They had not accepted in as the

  455. king over God's kingdom. They not had accepted him as the

  456. Risen Christ. As the ascended Christ.

  457. And so when Paul teaches these disciples, what they say about

  458. that, they need to accept Jesus Christ.

  459. What they do. They say, oh okay, we'll accept

  460. them now. No, they didn't do that.

  461. They Under the guidance of Paul here.

  462. Obviously, if this had been wrong, Paul would have corrected

  463. him there since when they heard this, they were baptized in the

  464. name of the Lord Jesus. These people were baptized.

  465. Sometimes we call that they were re-baptized.

  466. But that's the appropriate thing to do.

  467. So my question would be then going back to a paulus.

  468. This is what was in Acts chapter 19.

    Acts 19 chapter mention

  469. Is this what was done in? Check Acts chapter 18 and I

    Acts 18 chapter mention

  470. would say yes. Indeed, it was, yes, indeed.

  471. It was When a Polish found out that his baptism, the baptism he

  472. was preaching and obviously the baptism that he had obeyed was

  473. wrong. He did the same thing that Paul

  474. later instructed the Ephesians to do down here If not, then we

  475. have confusion and how the scriptures are put together.

  476. And there's some people today that I've believed are

  477. confusing. The idea of baptism they want to

  478. say this, they want to say it really doesn't matter.

  479. Why you're baptized just as long as you're baptized.

  480. And that's not what the scriptures say.

  481. That's not what the scriptures say because it does matter.

  482. It does matter baptism according to Acts 2:38 is for the

    Acts 2:38

  483. remission of sins. 1st Peter, chapter 3 verse 21 says baptism

  484. also. Now saves us Acts 22:16 arise,

    Acts 22:16

  485. and be baptized and wash away your sins.

  486. That's what it's for and the intention makes a difference. if

  487. you fall off a bridge, I guess the end result is the same,

  488. whether you jump or whether you're pushed right, the

  489. intention is, the end result is the same, but baptism is not

  490. falling off a bridge. Baptism is not falling off a

  491. bridge, it understands and it makes a difference what you

  492. understand, what you believe in the purposes for which you're

  493. doing it. It does.

  494. And so the idea that sometimes, sometimes we hear said well just

  495. as long as they're baptized just as long as they're baptized,

  496. That does not add up to scripture here, that does not

  497. act to the context of Acts chapter 18.

    Acts 18 chapter mention

  498. Our Acts chapter 18 in Acts chapter 19, does not does not

Acts 18 chapter mention Acts 19 chapter mention

  499. add it. To the purpose of baptism as is

  500. taught in the New Testament scriptures there.

  501. And so that's what stands out to me here.

  502. A part of this story of a policy.

  503. Let's go on next. It's notice this.

  504. According to the book of Acts here.

  505. Not look at First Corinthians. That's where we're going, right?

  506. Thank you. Thank you for reminding me where

  507. we're going here and, and we'll be done.

  508. Let's notice here. What Paul says One of the

  509. problems in Corinth Paul addresses.

  510. A number of difficulties that took place in the church at

  511. Corinth. One of the problems was there

  512. divisions. Here's what he says in First

    1 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  513. Corinthians chapter 1. He says, now this I say every

  514. one of you says, I am appalled, I am of a paulus.

  515. I am of cephas or Peter and I am of Christ.

  516. Now, apparently, Paul lays out here that there were divisions

  517. among them there. Is Christ.

  518. Divided was Paul crucified for you.

  519. Are you baptizing? And Paul.

  520. I think God, I baptized none of you.

  521. But Crispus and Gaius he says, there were divisions among you

  522. in verse 10. I beseech you Brethren by the

  523. name of our Lord Jesus Christ, he speak all that.

  524. You speak the same things. If there be no divisions among

  525. you, but be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in

  526. the same judgment. Because I understand there's

  527. some saying, I am a follower of Paul.

  528. I'm a follower of a policy. I am a follower of Peter.

  529. I'm a follower of Christ. That doesn't work.

  530. Paul was not. Crucified for them.

  531. They were not baptized in the name of Paul or of a paulus

  532. nopales, was not crucified for them.

  533. They don't qualify to be one who people follow.

  534. Christ. Jesus Christ is the one who

  535. qualifies there. so he urges them urges them to follow after

  536. Christ chapter 3, Start in the beginning of chapter 3.

  537. Paul says, I could not speak unto you as unto spiritual that

  538. as unto those who are influenced by spiritual things.

  539. Under more mature, people could not speak unto you as mature,

  540. Christians, spiritually, minded Christians, but even carnal.

  541. Those who are influenced by the world, even like babes in

  542. Christ, I fed you with milk. I've not fed you with meet up

  543. into this point. You have not been able to Bear

  544. it, neither yet. Now, are you able to Bear?

  545. He says, this is a sign of carnality among you.

  546. This is sign of being influenced by the world and immaturity

  547. spiritual immaturity for. Whereas among you, there is any

  548. among you envying and strife and divisions, are you not carnal

  549. and walk as men? Now, what's the evidence?

  550. He's saying that they were immature and they were

  551. influenced by the world. He says this.

  552. Verse 4. First Corinthians 3:1 says, I am

    1 Corinthians 3:1

  553. a follower of Paul another. I'm a follower of Apollo's or I

  554. am of Paul, or I am of Apollo's. Are you not carnal?

  555. Who's Paul? And who is Apollo's.

  556. They're simply ministers by whom ye believed even as the lord

  557. gave to every man. I have planted Apollos, watered

  558. God gave the increase. So, they neither see the planet.

  559. Anything to the? He that water.

  560. But God gave the increase now. Think back after reading that

  561. thing back over there in Acts the 18th chapter, what happened

  562. there? Paul went to Corinth, Paul

  563. started, the church there, but to a great degree.

  564. Paul is frustrated in preaching the gospel at Corinth.

  565. Paul planted. the end of Acts, the eighteenth chapter Apollo's

  566. comes and where Paul had planted and was frustrated, a paulus,

  567. preach, the gospel there Apollo's watered Apollo's was

  568. highly successful, He helped him much, he believed that through

  569. faith because he convinced the Jews mightily through the

  570. scriptures proving that Jesus was the Christ.

  571. So, a Polish wins the ticket right here.

  572. Impalas wins. Because he did, he was more

  573. successful than Paul at Corinth there, right?

  574. No. And one way of accounting, we

  575. can say he was more successful. But he just played a different

  576. role. Paul was the planter a paulus,

  577. was the water there and that's kind of how it is sometimes.

  578. Sometimes how it is parents, they'll teach their children all

  579. their lives and someone comes through.

  580. And some preacher comes through, from out of town has never been

  581. there before. Hold the gospel beat him and

  582. they baptized him and, you know, Wonderful.

  583. It's everybody playing the road. That's how it is here because

  584. that's what Paul says here. I planted Apollo's watered God

  585. gave the increase. So is neither the he the plans

  586. plants anything? Neither, is he that Waters?

  587. But it is God who gives the increase.

  588. That is the one who really makes the difference there.

  589. We play our roles and without planting and watering there

  590. would not be the increase to be made, but God gives the increase

  591. and we play our roles. Paul played his role Apollo's

  592. played his role. You play your role.

  593. I play my role, those in the congregation, they play.

  594. A their role, it is God who gives the increase?

  595. So, these are some things we can learn from the palace.

  596. Another thing we learned from the policy here is this idea of

  597. this division of this falling after different people.

  598. There Paul says, is a sign of carnality, being influenced by

  599. the world, and it's a sign of spiritual immaturity.

  600. It results in here. He says, envy and strife and

  601. divisions among you, he says this is a symptom of your

  602. carnality and spiritual immaturity in this And sometimes

  603. today we don't do that. Sometimes we don't say, I'm a

  604. follower of this brother. I'm a follower of that brother.

  605. I'm a follower of that person there but we do is we turn it a

  606. little bit different. And we'll say this, will say we

  607. change that phrase a little bit will say, do you agree with

  608. them? You do agree with that person.

  609. Do you agree with them that person there?

  610. It's sometimes. It said tool that you use to

  611. divide up there and identify each other.

  612. And sometimes it's born out of strife and Division.

  613. And sometimes, oftentimes, sadly, it is a sign of

  614. carnality. Oftentimes though, that's an

  615. it's necessary to identify those who are teaching false Doctrine,

  616. teaching false things. But sometimes we use it in the

  617. much the same way that it was used in 1st Corinthians.

  618. The third chapter there, to the detriment of the cause of

  619. Christ. Now, Now let's go next and see

  620. another place in which it's used here in chapters and verses 21

  621. through 23. Paul says the roles are this

  622. that they were just working together in this verses 21

  623. through 23. Therefore let no man.

  624. Glory in man for all things are yours.

  625. So it's not the individual leaders or teachers that we are

  626. to follow. After let, no, man glory in man,

  627. for all things are yours, whether Paul or Apollo's, or

  628. Peter, or the world to come or life, or if their death, nor

  629. things, present, or things to come.

  630. All are yours. You are.

  631. Christ's and Christ is God's. It says, the thing is, we're in

  632. this together. and then in chapter 4, Verse 6, Paul, erases

  633. all the names. Now, what do we mean by that?

  634. Looking 4:6? He's used Paul a paulus and

  635. Peter and Christ all along here. In chapter 6, verse 6 of chapter

  636. 4 seems to indicate to me that really the problem wasn't some

  637. were saying I'm a follower of a policy and some say my man

  638. followed appalled. Because in Chapter 4 Verse 6,

  639. Paul says it's these things Brethren.

  640. I have in a figure transferred to myself and to apologize for

  641. your sakes. Notice he says, I have in a

  642. figure transferred him to myself on a policies.

  643. Used Paul says I've used myself a nopales is examples here.

  644. I don't think they were following after Paul or polish.

  645. They might have been following after brother so-and-so in the

  646. congregation and some saying I'm a leader.

  647. I'm, I'm, I'm following the leadership of brother so-and-so

  648. in the congregation there at Corinth there.

  649. The Paul just used himself in a policies examples.

  650. So sometimes we, you know, you seen those shows where it says

  651. the names were changed to protect the innocent Here I

  652. guess you'd say. Paul says the names were changed

  653. to protect the guilty and that sense there.

  654. Having to figure transferred Paul myself in a policy in this.

  655. But the point is this. The point is still clear.

  656. The point is still the same that you may learn in us, not to

  657. think of men above that, which is written.

  658. And then no one of you be puffed up against another.

  659. The point is still the same. God is the one who gives the

  660. increase. We are simply workers together.

  661. For God or with God, in his Vineyard and his kingdom one.

  662. Last thing I want to point out about a paulus here.

  663. Is in. the last chapter of the book of Corinthians, First

    1 Corinthians 16 chapter mention

  664. Corinthians chapter 16. One thing I learned about Paula

  665. Paul is, if we look at it here Apollo's finally did meet up

  666. with Paul. He did meet up with some

  667. Apostles and so he could have in his later career, in his later

  668. life, he could have had miraculous gifts imparted to him

  669. because he came in contact with Paul.

  670. He came in contact, perhaps with others as well.

  671. That we do not know of Paul mentions him at the book of

  672. Titus, Titus Chapter 3, I believe verse 13.

    Titus 3 chapter mention

  673. He mentions a paulus. It apparently seems like Paul is

  674. may have been the one who delivered the letter to Titus

  675. there and so he was associated with the Paul's, but here in 1st

  676. Corinthians chapter 16, we learned something about how God

  677. works and God's plans for us 1st Corinthians chapter 16 and verse

  678. 12. Paul rights.

  679. In his closing remarks to the Corinthians as touching our

  680. brother Apollo's. I greatly desired him to come

  681. unto you with the brethren. But as will was not at all to

  682. come at this time but he will come when he shall have a

  683. convenient time. You know, this verse seems to

  684. tell me this verse seems to seems to indicate and gives me

  685. understanding that. God does not always have a

  686. specific plan for your life on what you to do and what work

  687. here involved. I guarantee you there are times

  688. in life when we draw the conclusion, when we're faced

  689. with an issue, when we're faced with the work.

  690. Frank you ever had this who you? Those words, the Old Testament,

  691. who knows? But what you've come to the

  692. kingdom for such a time as this and sometimes you feel like that

  693. the task in front of you, is the task that you're called to do.

  694. And indeed it is. But look here in 1st

  695. Corinthians, the 16th chapter verse 12 and inspired Apostle

  696. greatly desire to polish to go to Quarry if and work there.

  697. But the Paul says a paulus. Didn't want to come at this

  698. time. Don't know why?

  699. He was not willing to come at this time.

  700. You'll come later when he has a convenient time.

  701. And so that tells me also there that it's not that God says,

  702. this is the work that you are to do, and you have to do this

  703. work, we have a choice in the matter.

  704. We have a choice in the matter. But we follow the wisdom and the

  705. teaching of scripture in this. And so that tells me that tells

  706. me and that seems to indicate to me that God doesn't have a

  707. roadmap for my life on, on where I'm going to go, what I'm going

  708. to have for breakfast, what I'm going to have her lunch and, you

  709. know, things like that, it does not do that.

  710. He tells me, I need to obey the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

  711. I need to live for him. I need to serve and I need to be

  712. a part of the body of Christ. I need to serve him in the

  713. church. I need to worship as he teaches

  714. here. Those are things that he does

  715. plan for my life and he does direct for my life.

  716. But some of the details he leaves to my choice as to where

  717. and when and how some of these Works go forward there.

  718. Some things for your consideration.

  719. A paulus a man whose fascinating to me in Scripture.

  720. A man who I take a lot of Hope him because he was a man, kind

  721. of like me. It's kind of a goal to Aspire to

  722. but he's a man that I can learn a lot about and preaching the

  723. gospel to others and in learning how the gospel Works in people's

  724. lives for the saving of their souls.
