  1. Tonight, we want to continue on our theme that we've been

  2. teaching ever since Lord's Day morning, and for those of you

  3. who haven't made them all, we've been talking about some things

  4. that that absolutely must change.

  5. Some things that must not change and what are the differences in?

  6. How can we get it? The image of Christ into our

  7. hearts and into our minds? God does not accept us just as

  8. we are. He loves us.

  9. Just As we are but he does not accept us just as we are He

  10. commands. All men everywhere to repent,

  11. acts 17 and verse 30 and because of that you and I both in

  12. reflecting on that verse ask ourselves, what do I need to do

  13. to repent? What is it that I need to repent

  14. about? Well, repentance is a word which

  15. we, as we've said, doesn't it don't doesn't normally come up

  16. in our everyday language, but the word me.

  17. Needs to change. And so that's the essence of

  18. what we're studying tonight. We've been studying change or

  19. we've been studying, studying repentance all week we've been

  20. studying about things that we really need to change but one of

  21. the things I want to focus on tonight before we make another

  22. specific application of, this is how important it is to have the

  23. right knowledge of what to change about to really focus and

  24. look into the mirror. That God gave us in James.

  25. The first chapter, if you have your Bibles open in James, the

  26. first chapter We there notice that the Bible tells us in James

  27. one that we're going to start reading if you will, and verse

  28. 19. This, you know, my beloved

  29. Brethren, but everyone must be swift to hear slow to speak and

  30. slow to anger for the anger of man does not achieve the

  31. righteousness of God. Therefore, putting aside now,

  32. here's one of those things that he described using the clothing

  33. metaphor again. He says, this is something I

  34. want you to put off after. I've just told you some things

  35. to put on you. To put on some of these things,

  36. put it. Be swift to hear.

  37. Slow to speak and slow to anger, that's Behavior.

  38. He wants us to adopt if we don't have that behavior, we need to

  39. repent of that and put these things on, but notice he says, I

  40. want you to put this these things off, be get away from the

  41. anger for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of

  42. God. Therefore putting aside all

  43. filthiness and all the remains of wickedness in humility,

  44. received the word implanted, or as the King James, Says

  45. engrafted, which is able to save your souls.

  46. Now, he specifically talks about this scriptures, the scriptures

  47. that God gave us, he says, these have a work, God designed them,

  48. not to be a spiritual rabbit's foot if you will or some kind of

  49. Talisman. Whereas if you purchase a Bible,

  50. you've bought your ticket. All you got to do is show God at

  51. the Gate of Heaven, that you bought a Bible and have it

  52. punched and you get in. That's not what this is about.

  53. He said the word God wants us to use.

  54. God wants us to use it and put it into our hearts and into our

  55. minds. That's what he's saying, here,

  56. receive the word, implanted or engrafted.

  57. It means literally to put in to put under the surface and so the

  58. word has its work. James tells us that the word is

  59. important. Very, very important to our

  60. understanding, what it is that we're supposed to put off.

  61. Off and put on in our life. How can we even know that we're

  62. supposed to put this on? Unless the word tells us the

  63. very word itself tells us its purpose and the Bible must be

  64. respected. Notice in the next few verses

  65. verse 22 but prove yourselves doers of the word I want you to

  66. underline that phrase because whenever he says prove

  67. yourselves he's not saying I want you to prove that you have

  68. a copy. I want you to demonstrate is

  69. what he's saying. I want you to show That you have

  70. this word in your heart and in your mind, I want you to

  71. demonstrate it demonstrate. If you will yourselves doers of

  72. the word and not merely hearers who delude themselves, there's a

  73. delusion that goes on with knowledge.

  74. We sometimes think because we know how to do something we can

  75. do it. Well, you know, I've read books

  76. on fixing cars, but I can guarantee you.

  77. There's a difference between what they teach in the books and

  78. what I can do on a car. I don't know about you, but

  79. that's the way it is. Sometimes there's a variance

  80. between that and God says here, I want you to not only know, the

  81. word, I want you to do it because just having a knowledge

  82. sometimes can deceive you into thinking that you're doing it.

  83. You know, many times, Christians people who have the word of God

  84. memorized in their life years, use that knowledge as a

  85. substitute for obedience, they say, I'm smart, I know my Bible

  86. but they don't do it. They don't obey the word, and

  87. that's what James is talking about.

  88. Don't be a person that gets dim deceived into thinking that just

  89. because, you know, your Bible, your holy just because you know,

  90. your Bible, your obedient know, you may know the right thing to

  91. do and still not do it. And so, he says, here's the

  92. important point, I want you to get the word, has a work in

  93. those who obey it, those who examine themselves, those who

  94. make sure that their Are doers of the word and not merely a

  95. hearer a hearer notice. For, if anyone in verse 23 is a

  96. hearer of the word and not a doer.

  97. He is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror,

  98. but once he is looked at himself and has gone away, he

  99. immediately has forgotten what kind or manner of person that he

  100. is. What kind of person that he is

  101. this word of God reveals to us, where we need to change, but a

  102. lot of times just having that knowledge, we go away and it

  103. brings about About no real Corrections, the word of God

  104. reveals to us how God sees us. We oftentimes don't use the word

  105. to check out and see how God sees us.

  106. If we don't have a mirror available, what do we do?

  107. Well, I know what guys do they ask their wife.

  108. Do I look okay, honey, you know, that's what we do.

  109. We ask our wife. How do I look?

  110. And if she loves you, she may correct you.

  111. Or if you look, okay, she'll say you look.

  112. Okay. But if she's got a malicious

  113. Spirit, she may see all kinds of stuff on you and go.

  114. Yeah, you look fine. Go out and look like a clown, I

  115. don't care if she may not say that in her heart, but the fact

  116. of the matter is, is sometimes your friends aren't very helpful

  117. sometimes. They don't want to do the hard

  118. things that friendship demands. The Bible says, a friend loves

  119. at all time. All but proverb says the most

  120. wonderful things. Faithful are the wounds of a

  121. friend wounds of a friend sometimes our friends tell us we

  122. have bad breath. Sometimes our friends tell us

  123. you know we got toilet tissue on our shoe, sometimes our friends

  124. tell us that things aren't Aren't all of what they're

  125. cracked up to be. And we need to straighten up.

  126. But God, doesn't say, I want you to depend on your friends.

  127. God says, don't use them for a mere religiously.

  128. Especially, he says I gave you the Bible because you're always

  129. going to find different religious opinions about what's

  130. pleasing to me, and you're going to find somebody in the world.

  131. That's going to look at you and say, you're okay.

  132. You know, something I don't care what you believe tonight,

  133. morally, even or ethically you can find a religious group that

  134. will support that there are Christian religious groups.

  135. That thinks polygamy is okay, there are Christian religious

  136. groups that believe homosexuality is okay.

  137. There are Christian religious groups that believe all kinds of

  138. behavior is okay, different structure, the home, different

  139. definitions of the family, all kinds of things.

  140. But my friends, God doesn't tell us.

  141. To check with religious groups to see if we're okay.

  142. He says, I gave you the word. I gave you the scriptures.

  143. I want you to look into them to see how I see you don't keep

  144. trusting everybody else. I want you to look into the

  145. mirror. I gave you that reflects what

  146. manner of man you are notice very fenneman once.

  147. He has looked at himself got away, he immediately forgets.

  148. What point it kind of person. He is verse 25.

  149. And one, but one who looks intently at the perfect law of

  150. Liberty and abides by it. Don't overlook that phrase.

  151. That's the key phrase and abides by it.

  152. Notice, this this man will be blessed in what he does.

  153. So God gave us the word to bring about the changes that we need

  154. to make and our life. He says, this is a mirror.

  155. This is a mirror. I want you to look into to, I

  156. want you to look into that mirror.

  157. And I want you to see how I see you.

  158. And this is my word. I want you to look there.

  159. That's the source, that's the Judgment because you're going to

  160. find men that will give you all different kinds of opinion.

  161. The Bible talks about this process a little bit different

  162. terms and the book in the scriptures in 2nd Corinthians

  163. chapter 5 and verse 7. The bible says, for we walk by

  164. faith and not by sight. Now, what does it mean to walk

  165. by faith? Let's talk about that for just a

  166. little bit walking by faith and not by sight.

  167. Normally we walk by sight, don't we?

  168. Normally we look and we look where we're going.

  169. We say that's where I want to go and we make a name and we walk

  170. toward that and we can be confident.

  171. But what if we don't have our site, we have a brother here.

  172. That's that's visually challenged.

  173. How does he do that? Well, he has to have other

  174. things that inform him other kinds of knowledge.

  175. To inform him so that he can walk cautiously and safely

  176. toward a certain kind of place. He walks by faith.

  177. He literally walks by faith but spiritually I want you to know

  178. that God tells us we walk by faith as well too.

  179. How do we know what? Really pleases god without his

  180. word. We we don't know.

  181. We have good guests. We have guesses.

  182. We have our conscience. But the Bible says, we walk by

  183. faith. How can we walk by faith and not

  184. by sight? How can we do that?

  185. Well, first of all, he's saying it doesn't come from you.

  186. That's the point your site often guide you, but I want you to

  187. walk by faith. Now, Faith is something.

  188. Unseen and Hebrews the eleventh chapter and verse 1.

  189. The Bible says faith is the Assurance of things.

  190. Hoped for a conviction about Things.

  191. Not Seen, Hebrews chapter 11 and verse One.

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  192. Now, he tells us what faith is? He says, faith is having some

  193. confidence, faith is having some Assurance.

  194. Faith is having a strong conviction about what about

  195. things, unseen. Ah, that's what it means to walk

  196. by faith. In other words, we're not

  197. walking by our site, or walking by faith in an area where we

  198. don't have that knowledge in and of ourselves.

  199. It's like walking in a dark room whenever I just walk without my

  200. my site, I may bump into the wall I may make mistakes.

  201. I'm not going to try it here but the whole point is is whenever

  202. God who loves us, informs us of where he is, then we can follow

  203. his voice. Can't we?

  204. That's how we walk by faith. When God says, Hey, follow my

  205. voice, follow my voice, follow my word.

  206. This is how, you know, this is how, you know, the way this is,

  207. the way that is safe. Follow my voice, listen to my

  208. words, then we can walk confidently and know.

  209. Oh, that this is pleasing to God.

  210. If not, we're just making guesses in John 17 and verse 17.

  211. The scripture says sanctify them by thy truth.

  212. Thy word is truth. Here's how I can know that I

  213. pleasing to God, I don't have to say how many people believe it.

  214. I don't have to ask how many religious groups believe it.

  215. Here's how I can walk by faith. I can know that the word of God

  216. reveals to me what truth is and then I want you to make note of

  217. this passage Judge, Romans 10, and verse 17, Romans 10 and

  218. verse 17. The Bible says, faith comes by

  219. hearing And hearing by the word of God, doesn't it?

  220. That's how I can know. That's how can I can be

  221. confident that what I'm doing is pleasing God is I have to come

  222. back to the word of God the word of God which sanctifies me sets

  223. me apart from sin that word of God which calls to be in

  224. darkness calls to me and my spiritual ignorance and informs

  225. me of how I can walk confidently.

  226. In my Wok before. God how can I know that I'm

  227. pleasing to God? How can I know how can I know I

  228. have the word of God. Given to me, that causes me to

  229. look into it and I can see myself, like God sees me, I can

  230. know what God's will is for my life even though he's not here

  231. to tell me. Even though he's unseen to my

  232. eyes, I can have confidence in my walk before him because I

  233. look into the mirror it reveals to me.

  234. Those things. I Need to change in.

  235. It tells me those things that I need to do to please Us in.

  236. That's how faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word

  237. of God Romans 10 and verse 17. Oh there are so many passages.

  238. That we could talk about tonight but I just don't have time to

  239. talk about all of them. But you know, there's so many

  240. Christians today that aren't using their Bibles and I know

  241. one Christian that he would it was really funny of.

  242. I asked him where he's Bible was and he said it's in the trunk of

  243. my car. I said, why is it in the trunk

  244. of your car and he said so I won't forget to take it to

  245. church. You give your Bible a ride to

  246. church every Sunday. Yeah.

  247. And I carry it in and I don't want to lose It so I keep it in

  248. my trunk so I won't forget to take it to church man, why don't

  249. you hand to down the rows and give it to somebody who use it?

  250. You know how many people have Bibles and don't use them?

  251. God gave us the word for a reason.

  252. He wants us to look into it to see ourselves and that is how we

  253. walk by faith. You can't go trust in every man,

  254. every woman in the world, you just can't do that.

  255. You've got to come back to the word.

  256. It will tell us what it is that we have to change in order to be

  257. pleasing to God. Now religious group, may tell us

  258. what it takes to please them. But that's not necessarily

  259. pleasing God. You see, that's the whole point.

  260. That's the whole point. Sanctify them by thy truth.

  261. Thy word is truth. John 17 and verse 17.

  262. Well, what how what is let me start again here?

  263. What is it that we're supposed to then find in the word of God?

  264. Well the Bible tells us it records the image of Jesus and

  265. the Bible tells us in Romans the 12th chapter as we've looked at

  266. before that we are Being transformed into the image of

  267. God, we quoted, Romans 8 and let's do it again in Romans 8,

  268. 2:29 notice what the Bible says here, he predestined us to be

  269. conformed, to the image of his son.

  270. The Bible says, that's our purpose in this life.

  271. Is the things that we need to change.

  272. Our chain, are things that do not reflect the image of Christ.

  273. If Christ is our life, if we're supposed to be Christians, it

  274. doesn't mean looking like Christ on on outside.

  275. I remember in the 60s tell, You how old I am.

  276. So sorry about that, you know, whenever there were people

  277. walking around in sandals and white robes and everything

  278. thinking, that's what it meant to imitate Jesus.

  279. Well, my friends Jesus wasn't concerned about the outer man

  280. unless it was a modest or something.

  281. He was concerned about the Inner Man, and it's the inner man of

  282. Jesus that got, it's the character of Christ.

  283. It's the heart of Christ that God wants us to put into our

  284. hearts and into our lives. It's his compassion, it's his

  285. desire to please, his father. Father in heaven.

  286. And so the Bible tells us here that God's purpose is for us to

  287. be conformed to his character or his image in that sense, as the

  288. word image is talking about inner character.

  289. I believe that's what he's talking about.

  290. Well, now notice, go to Romans 12, if you're there, go over

  291. Romans 12 verse 1 in Romans 12 verse 1.

    Romans 12:1 Romans 12:1

  292. Therefore Brethren, therefore I urge you brothers and by the

  293. mercies of God, to present your bodies, a living and holy

  294. sacrifice acceptable, to God, which is your New American

  295. Standard says, spiritual service of worship.

  296. King, James did better on this one.

  297. New King James is real good, which is your reasonable or

  298. rational service in other words, it corresponds to reason that if

  299. God died For us. Then we should be living

  300. sacrifices to him to show him our appreciation.

  301. That's reasonable. That's rational, somebody died

  302. for me. Iõm iom, I need to honor them in

  303. some way. Notice verse 2 and do not be

  304. conformed to this world. There's our, there's our change,

  305. do not be conformed to this world.

  306. But be transformed in the Greek. This is the word metamorpho

  307. which is literally where we get the word metamorphosis.

  308. It means it's what happens to a caterpillar when it turns into a

  309. butterfly. And he says, that's what we're

  310. supposed to be doing. That's the kind of change that

  311. supposed to happen to our life. We're worms that turn into

  312. butterflies whenever we serve Jesus.

  313. And so he says, here, do not be conformed, but be transformed by

  314. the renewing of your mind. So that you may prove that which

  315. is good and acceptable and perfect, our lives are supposed

  316. to demonstrate our lives are Posed to explain demonstrate the

  317. will of God, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

  318. That's wild. That's our purpose.

  319. That's our purpose. My friends as a Christian, you

  320. can't be a Christian without taking the purpose of the name.

  321. A Christian means follower of Jesus Christ.

  322. It doesn't just mean a state that you're in.

  323. Yeah, I'm a Christian stamp. It on my hand, but I can behave

  324. any way. I want.

  325. God says, that's not it. That is not it.

  326. You are supposed to be a transformed life, a life that

  327. demonstrates. What the will of God is that

  328. which is good and acceptable and perfect.

  329. You have a responsibility if you wear the name.

  330. How many people don't know that? We have a responsibility?

  331. If we wear the name to demonstrate to prove, by the

  332. way, we live that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

  333. And if you'll remember last night, we showed that a lot of

  334. treat people substitute, holy living with the Assembly of the

  335. church. They believe, if they go and

  336. they check in and they give three hours a week, they can do

  337. that without giving their life. And my friends public worship is

  338. no. Toot for a holy life.

  339. It is not don't get deceived into thinking that it is.

  340. That's what he's saying. Right here.

  341. We're supposed to have a transformed life so we can prove

  342. that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

  343. Oh there's so much more. Let's go on down.

  344. Verse 34. Well, no, let's just go on.

  345. There are things that we need to get to tonight.

  346. That's we've talked about in Luke 640 and disciple when he's

  347. fully trained will be like his feature.

  348. Christlikeness is our objective and my friends, if you're not

  349. being christ-like in your home, it to your husband, to your

  350. wife, to your children, to your employer, to your neighbors, you

  351. haven't really grasp the authentic Christianity, that

  352. Jesus Christ taught Jesus Christ did not bring a form of

  353. godliness, he brought the reality of it and that is what

  354. we his followers are supposed to adopt and that kind of holy

  355. living is what we're supposed to be devoted to but we can talk,

  356. we can preach a lot of we could scratch a lot of itching ears

  357. tonight by just talking about what happens in the assembly and

  358. my friends. That's important.

  359. We must worship God in spirit truth, John for 23 and 24.

  360. Don't get me wrong. But don't substitute that

  361. assembly for the holy life, you can't do it.

  362. They're both equally important. All of its important.

  363. And so in our holy living, we have got to ask myself.

  364. Is this the way Jesus would behave toward his children,

  365. toward his parents toward a husband and toward a wife, a my

  366. reflecting what the word of God teaches?

  367. Do I reflect my knowledge of the word of God, when I read

  368. Ephesians 5, is it? Something people can see in my

  369. life and can you Preach, what I practice does the word of God

  370. substantiate the way I'm behaving.

  371. And the attitudes, I possess well tonight, let's talk about

  372. one specific thing. It's 8:15, I'm going to, you

  373. know, Monday night, I gave you, I thought they paid overtime and

  374. so I went long but last night, I cut it off and tonight I'm going

  375. to try to cut it off to, I get really in enthused in some of

  376. these things. But tonight I want to look at

  377. some primary things that the Bible says, we've got to put off

  378. if You'll turn to First Peter once again.

  379. First Peter, the second chapter verse 1 through 3 notice, let's

  380. talk about one thing where he says, therefore putting aside

  381. all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy.

  382. We talked about that the other night, we talked about what,

  383. Apocrypha see was it was that insincerity, it was that

  384. sometimes majoring on the miners, it was that sometimes

  385. that, that that being hypercritical, and we talked

  386. about all those aspects of it. But notice what he says here,

  387. all envy and all slander, like, newborn babes long for the pure.

  388. Lotus, what he says in verse too, long.

  389. Long. And that word long.

  390. Their beans desire earnestly. It's like a romantic term.

  391. What happens when you long for someone?

  392. Well, it's something that you focus and you miss them and you

  393. want them and you want them to be with you.

  394. I long for them and he says, long here, verse 24, the pure

  395. milk of the word. So that by it, you may grow in

  396. respect to Salvation. If you have tasted of the

  397. kindness of the Lord, this is supposed to be a Christians

  398. attitude. He's so both still long for this

  399. word. It's something we're supposed to

  400. desire. I hope you're spiritually

  401. healthy enough, that you have an appetite.

  402. You know, whenever the doctor asks you if you've lost your

  403. appetite that's a sign that maybe not everything is alright

  404. and spiritually. The same thing is true whenever

  405. a Christian does not long for the word, there may be some

  406. weakness. There may be some spiritual

  407. cancer, there's something going on in their life, that's not

  408. right. Because newborn babes long for

  409. the milk of the word, they long for it.

  410. They look forward to it. They are satisfied when they're

  411. getting nourished on it and that's what Christians are

  412. supposed to be as well, long for the pure milk of the word.

  413. So that by it you may grow in respect to salvation but let's

  414. talk about one of the things he mentioned.

  415. Like we said we're going to get to one of them anyway tonight,

  416. one of the things he mentioned putting away in verse one is all

  417. Pas. Crasy and all in be and I'll

  418. slander. To talk about Envy for just a

  419. moment. If you've got your old

  420. testament's, please turn to Psalms, Psalm, if you wilt Psalm

  421. number 73 and Psalm 73, the entire Psalm is a Psalm talking

  422. about the temptation of envy. That isn't that interesting?

  423. I didn't think Envy was that big of a thing to put out of my

  424. life. Well, he says, as newborn babes,

  425. it's something that's supposed to be put out of our Lives.

  426. First thing first thing. What is Envy have you has

  427. anybody ever asked you? What is Envy?

  428. Well, you might not. You may say, well, I I don't

  429. know what the words are, but I know when I've arrived, if I

  430. have that feeling, I go. What is that feeling?

  431. How do you know that you've envied something or that you are

  432. envious of it? Well, I asked the young kids at

  433. the Whispering Pines congregation, I asked the

  434. younger ones about 13 and 14. I said, help me with this word

  435. in vien and what is, how do you know when you're envious or not?

  436. And one of the little kids, just hit it right on the head.

  437. He said. It's that uncomfortable feeling

  438. whenever somebody gets a new pair of shoes.

  439. I said from the shoes, he said no, whenever they get shoes that

  440. I wanted, it's that uncomfortable feeling when I

  441. write see them when those shoes and I go and I'm comfortable

  442. feeling. Yeah.

  443. In other words, he's saying, I want them and they got them.

  444. It makes me feel uncomfortable about it and I thought, well,

  445. that's that's an interesting definition.

  446. But, you know, it is kind of an uncomfortable feeling.

  447. Think about it for a minute, everything's fine with you and

  448. your friends until they get a different kind of car your head.

  449. Are satisfied. You know, you're satisfied with

  450. everything until they get another house, and then

  451. something happens to you, it makes you feel uncomfortable.

  452. Uncomfortable about it. You begin to maybe get envious

  453. of them. Ah, that's it.

  454. Maybe it's their new boyfriend, their new girlfriend, their new

  455. bike, their new shoes, their new shirt.

  456. I don't care what it is. Anything fill in the blank.

  457. It's whenever somebody else is blessed.

  458. And instead of rejoicing, with those who rejoice, it makes you

  459. feel uncomfortable. You go.

  460. Yeah, you know, I thought well Glenn, you know, you're mature,

  461. you don't have these feelings very often, you know, do you?

  462. And I thought Glen, are you ever India?

  463. So I asked myself Glenn, are you ever envious?

  464. You know, I'm really not envious of other people's cars.

  465. I know they I know they lose that new car smell.

  466. Just put a kid in it for a while and it'll lose the new cards.

  467. Now, you know, houses need maintenance.

  468. I've had houses, I know that they get old, you know, knew

  469. this thing that that's not it. Grandkids.

  470. Somebody got a grandkid and I went, I wish I had one of those.

  471. That's the thing. You know?

  472. That's something you kind of go, man.

  473. I'd like one of those so I asked my daughter.

  474. Can I have a grandkid? And she says, if I helped pay

  475. for shipping but anyway, the whole point is You know, it may

  476. be something weird. It may not be material.

  477. We're not talking about materialism here.

  478. Mostly when you use the word envy or coverages, you think

  479. about materialism but guess what?

  480. Folks, it doesn't just apply to materialism.

  481. It applies to listen any blessing that someone else has

  482. That you wish you had. That's whenever you know, you're

  483. envious, it could be respect, it could be a blessing of something

  484. else. Some other kind, it could be the

  485. fact that they're healthy and you're not, it could be all

  486. kinds of things that create this sense of Envy within you this

  487. uncomfortableness. It's somebody else's blessing

  488. that, that feeling of jealousy. And by the way, this Greek word

  489. is the root word for jealousy as well.

  490. In fact, many translators, translate them interchangeably

  491. jealousy and envy because they're both it conveys.

  492. The same idea. The Bible says this attitude is

  493. devilish or evil. Notice in James the third

  494. chapter In James the third chapter, they're starting read

  495. verse 14, 13, WHO among you is wise and understanding.

  496. Let him show by his good behavior, his deeds in the

  497. gentleness of wind wisdom, but if you have bitter jealousy,

  498. there's that word that's translated in be in First Peter,

  499. to notice bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart.

  500. Do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth.

  501. This wisdom is not that which comes down from above But his

  502. Earthly natural, not spiritual and demonic demonic.

  503. Look at that word there. In verse 15 demonic.

  504. Verse 16, for where jealousy and selfish ambition exist.

  505. There is disorder and every evil thing.

  506. But the wisdom from above is first, pure then Peaceable,

  507. gentle reasonable full of mercy and good, fruits unwavering

  508. without hypocrisy, who's the, and the seed, whose fruit is

  509. righteousness, is sown in Peace by those who make peace.

  510. Now, here's where God exposes us to ourselves.

  511. He says, this is not Heavenly wisdom, this is Earthly wisdom.

  512. This is natural as Posed to spiritual.

  513. And it is demonic instead of Godly.

  514. This is something that must be put out of our young Christian

  515. Hearts. It's something that's got to be

  516. put out of it. Well Glen, you know what is the

  517. difference between being motivated and Desiring

  518. something? And being envious, good

  519. question, that is a good question because all of us are

  520. motivated to W certain things. Whenever we see things,

  521. advertise, we may want something good.

  522. Refreshing drink, you're not envious of that drink yet you

  523. Desire. It it's not wrong for us to want

  524. to get a better house, or get a better car or anything like

  525. that. That's not the point.

  526. It's not Wang for us to want to improve ourselves to be more

  527. respected. But envious has within that

  528. desire, the quality of being irritated that others are

  529. blessed. That's indeed, it's being upset

  530. with someone else's blessing. The point is, is if we, We do it

  531. for ourselves. If we do it to improve

  532. ourselves, if we have a goal and we go after it, that's one

  533. thing, but to be irritated at somebody else's blessings, there

  534. are thin That's the point he wants us to get and he says, I

  535. want you to get that out of your heart and out of your mind, you

  536. know, Envy has hurt the church, probably more than anything

  537. else. It really has envy and jealousy

  538. in James of for chapter, just go back on.

  539. Gone to the next chapter. In James chapter 4, verse 1 and

    James 4:1

  540. 2. What is the source of quarrels

  541. and conflicts among you is not the source?

  542. Your pleasures that wage war in your members?

  543. You lust and do not have. So you commit murder.

  544. You are envious and cannot obtain.

  545. So you fight and quarrel you do not have because you do not ask.

  546. Now, there's where he says, where's the source of the

  547. quarrels? Where's the fighting?

  548. Among you? He says it's your jealousy.

  549. It's that's what's caused a lot of problems in the church.

  550. A brother. No, get a new car and

  551. inadvertently. There's nothing wrong with

  552. buying a new car, but some other brother will be envious of that.

  553. And it'll create bitterness, it'll create jealousy and envy

  554. and it becomes the source of trouble later on all of sudden,

  555. trouble shows up and nobody connects, nobody connects the

  556. the problem with the new car, nobody connects the problem with

  557. the new house, nobody connects the problem with the new child,

  558. the new blessing, whatever it might be, but there is a

  559. connection, the connection is envy and jealousy.

  560. My friends, when things explode and there's no seeming

  561. connection, double check, if you're uncomfortable at somebody

  562. else's blessing, perhaps, that's the problem in our hearts and

  563. our minds, but my friend's, this is such a great Temptation, you

  564. might say, well, Glenn that's pretty selfish and that's very

  565. childish, that should never be a problem for us.

  566. Well, as Christians, you know, sometimes generally we are

  567. jealous. We are envious of the wicked in

  568. Psalm 73. Like I said, we were let me read

  569. verse 1. Let's Start read it together.

  570. If Open to Psalm 73. Surely God is good to Israel.

  571. Notice what he says to those who are pure in heart but as for me

  572. my feet came close to stumbling, you know, a song here in this.

  573. Psalm the writer is saying, my feet came close to stumbling and

  574. here's why notice my steps had almost slipped verse 3.

  575. For I was envious of the Arrogant as I saw the prosperity

  576. of the wicked for there were no pains in their death and their

  577. body is fat. I think that is probably changed

  578. Through the Ages. But it says they were blast.

  579. Notice they are, they are not in trouble as other men nor are

  580. they plagued like mankind. Therefore pride is in there

  581. necklace and the Garment of violence covers them their eyes

  582. bulge from fatness, the imaginations of their heart run

  583. Riot, they Mock and wickedly speak of Oppression.

  584. They speak from on high, they have set their mouth against the

  585. heavens and their tongue parades through the Earth.

  586. Now, here the writer is saying, look.

  587. I was perfectly fine, living my life until I began to look at a

  588. wicked man. One day and I saw his arrogance

  589. and I saw the way he died, I saw the way he lived.

  590. All the blessings that he had and I almost slipped.

  591. I almost slipped because I envied the wicked.

  592. Has that ever happened to you? Has that ever happened?

  593. When it whenever you grown weary of serving God and you do it and

  594. you do it and it cost you and your persecuted for it and there

  595. doesn't seem to be any blessing and those who are wicked.

  596. Just go act, wickedly and seem to get blessed and blessed and

  597. blessed. And there's that little

  598. temptation to Envy The Wicked. The Bible says, don't let your

  599. heart and be Sinners, don't let it happen.

  600. Proverbs 23 and verse 17, I want you to all memorize this

  601. passage. I want you to really think about

  602. its message, and I want to see if it affects your heart and

  603. your mind, Psalms 23 and verse 17, do not let your heart in be

  604. Sinners, but live in the fear of the Lord always, you know, All

  605. the way through the scriptures. The Bible tells us of envious

  606. people. All we could talk about so many

  607. tonight because of Envy Cain slew Abel First John 3 and verse

  608. 2, because of Envy, the Philistines stopped up Isaac's

  609. well, Genesis 26, because of Envy Joseph's brothers, sold him

  610. into slavery, Genesis 37, verse 11, because of Envy men

    Genesis 37:11

  611. crucified the Lord, Matthew, 27 and verse 18, because of Envy

  612. the apostles were cast. Prison acts 5 verse 17.

    Acts 5:17

  613. Envy is a big problem. Envy is a big problem.

  614. The Bible says in Proverbs 14 and verse 30, but in Venus is a

  615. rottenness to the Bone. It's a rottenness what that word

  616. suggests cancer. My friends bone cancer is what

  617. he's talking about. In other words, it's cancer to

  618. the very thing that holds your body.

  619. Upright, it real a road, the very thing that causes you to

  620. stand, Envy is nasty and horrible, it's a malignancy in

  621. your life, crook. Wrath is cruel and anger

  622. outrageous, but who is able to stand before Envy Proverbs 27

  623. and verse 4 in these associated with all kinds of.

  624. So, I want you to notice how many times it's brought up envy

  625. and jealousy because of the same thing notice in Galatians. 5

    Galatians 5:19

  626. verse 19. Let's see if you're taking

  627. notes, please take some notes real quick and I'll repeat them

  628. twice so that you can write them down in Galatians 5 and verse

  629. 19. Notice what it says here.

  630. Now, the Deeds of the flesh are evident which are immorality

  631. impurity situation, ality idolatry sorcery, enmities

  632. Strife jealousy. There's the word right there.

  633. It means Envy jealousy. Outbursts of anger disputes.

  634. Factions dissensions factions, in beings this word in beams is

  635. even more. It's in the plural and it means

  636. having a heart that is if you will covetousness, it really

  637. probably should be translated. Coverages.

  638. But the whole point is, is he's talking about all of these

  639. things that are works of the flesh, their deeds of the flesh,

  640. but notice the fruits of the spirit verse 22.

  641. But the fruit of the spirit is love joy, peace patience.

  642. Kindness goodness and faithfulness gentleness

  643. self-control against such things.

  644. There is no law. This is the character.

  645. Des, if you will description that a Christian is supposed to

  646. have those last fruits to the spirit, but he said this other

  647. description is something that's not supposed to be in Christians

  648. at tall and notice in 2nd Corinthians 12 and 20. 2nd

  649. Corinthians, 12, and verse 20. It says, I am afraid that

  650. perhaps when I come I may find you not to be what?

  651. I wish that may be found to you, be not what you wishes.

  652. Well perhaps there will be Strife, jealousy, angry tempers

  653. disputes Slanders, gossip arrogance, disturbances.

  654. And I'm afraid that when I come again, my God May humiliate me

  655. before you. He mentions, all of these lists

  656. of debates and write a wrath. And, and problems, First Timothy

  657. 6 and verse 4, if you're taking notes, It's associated with all

  658. kinds of evil strife and railings.

  659. Perverse disputing Titus 33 foolishness dose, obedience

  660. diverse lusts, Titus 33. First Corinthians 3, 1 through

  661. 3, Romans 129, we don't have time to mention all the places

  662. that the word ND is found in the scriptures.

  663. But what is the remedy for it? What is the remedy for it?

  664. Now, this may be kind of interesting.

  665. You may say, oh, Clank Clin. Now, that I know this is

  666. something I need to put off. I need to put in its place.

  667. You know, the Bible tells us every don't don't Christianity

  668. is not a don't do religion. A lot of times people consider

  669. themselves just to be Christians because they don't murder.

  670. Don't steal don't lie, you know. Are you a good Christian?

  671. Yeah, I don't do a lot of things.

  672. Well, my friends, Christianity is stopping doing some things

  673. but it's doing its positively doing some things we need to

  674. replace the Avoid, we need to stop doing certain things and

  675. then start doing other things to fill that void in our lives.

  676. And so the, why do we fill in be with when we put in be out of

  677. our Lives? Well, we put in love because the

  678. Bible says in First Corinthians 13 and verse 4 love, doesn't

  679. Envy There it is. The solution to Envy is love.

  680. Well, wait a minute, I think I love my sister, my brother, the

  681. gets. Oh, really then why aren't you

  682. rejoicing with them? Or are you selfishly saying?

  683. I wish I had it, and they didn't That's not real love.

  684. Love is truly. And honestly rejoicing with

  685. somebody who is rejoicing? Let me put it this way.

  686. One writer I was reading after this, Jay Adams, he talks about

  687. some of the things he says. Sometimes the best comparison is

  688. to make it is to understand your feelings toward a child.

  689. That gets an award. You know, do you do you feel

  690. envious of your child? Whenever your child is honored

  691. whenever your child is honored? You kind of go great.

  692. You did so good and you're happy for them, aren't you?

  693. You don't, you don't kind of say, you know, honey I really

  694. felt empty tonight. Whenever my child received the

  695. role that award, I'd all the lights just went off of me and I

  696. felt empty and lost. What do you say to somebody like

  697. that? Get a life.

  698. That's what you probably say. It's not all about you.

  699. That's what you. If somebody really says that you

  700. wouldn't say you are. Why would you be jealous of your

  701. son, or your daughter getting an award?

  702. Gimme a Break because you love them.

  703. You want to see them honored. Can we make a parallel to the

  704. church? Yes, whenever brother and

  705. sisters are blessed. It's not about what you don't

  706. have. It's about what they're

  707. receiving Rejoice with them. Be happy for them, be happy.

  708. They got that car. So don't we ask him to borrow

  709. yours be and be thankful whenever they got that new

  710. computer be thankful whenever they got their blessing,

  711. whatever it might be because you're not supposed to be

  712. thinking about what you haven't got.

  713. It's not about you. It's about them Rejoice with

  714. them. First, Corinthians 2:12 chapter.

  715. So love does not envy a parent. Doesn't experience discomfort

  716. over the advantage and blessings of their children and neither

  717. should we? We to one another, the Bible

  718. said Paul says, put on the Lord Jesus Christ Romans 13 verse 13

    Romans 13:13

  719. and 14. Let's look at this passage

  720. because he just tells us to put off the Envy notice in Romans

  721. 13. I do want to, I'm going to have

  722. to speed on here but Romans 13. Verse 13 and 14.

  723. Let us behave properly, as in the day, not in carousing and

  724. drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and set in situat

  725. nor in strife, and jealousy, but put on the Lord, Jesus Christ,

  726. and make no provision for the Flesh and regards to its lust.

  727. He tells us here whenever we're putting on the Lord, Jesus

  728. Christ, that it's going to automatically.

  729. Take off, take off Envy in our lives.

  730. Jesus Christ, wasn't envious. Jesus Christ, wasn't envious.

  731. Let me ask one more question, then I'll bring our lesson to a

  732. focus here at the end, but you know what have you ever worked

  733. in an office with a lot of people.

  734. Have you ever heard the petty stuff that goes on sometimes in

  735. office? You know, somebody was

  736. disrespected, they disrespected me, they didn't wash my coffee

  737. cup. They did, they took my parking

  738. place and all kinds of the garbage.

  739. Did you know people get killed over that kind of stuff people

  740. get killed. There was a boy killed over a

  741. pair of tennis shoes that he wore to school.

  742. It was a source of murder. Source of murder in school.

  743. Somebody's tennis shoes. Give me a break.

  744. I don't care what your label says.

  745. Is it is the label on your clothes causing problems at

  746. school at work, the kind of clothes you have our, don't have

  747. does what somebody else where causing you problems.

  748. It really is childish. And it really is not like

  749. Christ. Let's Christians as Christians.

  750. We're not playing church tonight.

  751. We're not here. Scratching Engineers, folks.

  752. I'm trying to get really real Since we're trying to imitate

  753. Jesus, jealousy is something that was no part of his

  754. character and it should have no part of ours.

  755. Let it totally get out of us. Let's think about others welfare

  756. above our own. It B is one of the works of the

  757. flesh. It is not a work of the spirit,

  758. therefore we should not. If there's any place that a

  759. person should find Refuge from envious pettiness, it should be

  760. in the body of Jesus Christ in Philippians chapter 4 and verse

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  761. 11. In Philippians 4:11 right quick.

    Philippians 4:11

  762. Not that I speak from want. Paul says, for I have learned to

  763. be content and whatever. Circumstances I am, the Apostle

  764. Paul learned that whatever he had, he was going to be content

  765. with it. And that's what we need to be in

  766. this world. We need to learn some

  767. contentment. We need to put to death, some

  768. materialism. We need to put to death envy and

  769. jealousy. Let's just learn.

  770. Paul said he was a secret that he had to learn and it is a mark

  771. of maturity learn. Learn to be content, learn to be

  772. content. We can overcome Envy if we will

  773. consider. What Envy is what the nature of

  774. it is. What its source is, what its

  775. cost is the Habit that it's rigged, wrecked on the church,

  776. and exactly how much it is, not in the image of Jesus Christ.

  777. So tonight, that's all we've got time for.

  778. I wish we could talk, I wanted to bring in hatred to, but we're

  779. not going to have time to bring that in.

  780. Night. The lesson is yours.

  781. We've looked into the word of God, and we've saw its one

  782. aspect of it, and one aspect of a character thing that we've got

  783. to change. Now tonight, this may or may not

  784. have applied to you, but one thing we can do is teach our

  785. children, not to Envy. We can teach them about how to

  786. Rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep and

  787. not whine about not having what other all the other little kids

  788. have. My friend, you can teach your

  789. children, very basically early on not to hate and you could

  790. teach them not to Envy as well, don't it anytime your child.

  791. It sometimes looks down on another kid because of the

  792. clothing there where that's something that really needs to

  793. be corrected, but, more than that, it may be expected of a

  794. child, but never in an adult. Let us get it out of our Lives.

  795. Let's make sure that we don't reflect to our children

  796. attitudes that are Unworthy of following Jesus Christ.

  797. Let's make sure that we're not uncomfortable.

  798. When somebody else is blessed. Okay.

  799. Because Jesus rejoices with those who rejoice and he weeps

  800. with those who weep. So tonight the lessons yours.

  801. We don't have time to look at everything in the mirror

  802. tonight. I would love to but I can't have

  803. time tonight. If you have any questions about

  804. this or anything else about the church, or about the necessity,

  805. the need of looking into the mirror of the word tonight, then

  806. please just ask and we'll attempt to give an answer for

  807. the hope that lies within us tonight.

  808. If you want to know how to please God, I don't we don't

  809. stand up here, like, Paula, missions and say, trust me, I

  810. know you need to ask a question of somebody who says, they know,

  811. What do you know, where in the scriptures?

  812. Is that what scripture tells that?

  813. Oh, dude? Is that something you just

  814. imagined? Something you thought up

  815. something? You think something you guessed?

  816. Or is this a word? What is the word of God teach?

  817. I want to know how to please God.

  818. Well the Bible tells us what it takes to please.

  819. God without faith, Hebrews 11 and verse 6.

  820. It is impossible to please him. If you want to, please God, you

  821. can you can do all kinds of religious are behave in

  822. religious ways. But without faith, It is totally

  823. insincerity at Apocrypha see. God says he's not pleased ta

  824. even though you give your body to be burned and have not

  825. charity. It profiteth.

  826. Nothing First Corinthians 13. What's going on in our heart is

  827. important. So he says without faith, it's

  828. impossible to please him Hebrews 11 and verse 6, in our faith.

  829. Then what do we do? I believe.

  830. In God, I believe Jesus is the son of God.

  831. I believe that he brought the message from God, what is it

  832. that he wants me to do? Jesus says, if you keep my words

  833. this, He it is who loves me in John the 16th chapter Jesus,

  834. what do you want me to do? Jesus himself said in Mark

    Mark 16:16

  835. 16:16. He that believes and is baptized

  836. shall be saved. But he that believeth not shall

  837. be damned, you know he didn't have to say and is baptized not

  838. because if somebody didn't believe, they're not going to

  839. obey him. All you need to say is he that

  840. believes in is baptized shall be saved my friends.

  841. That's what Jesus told us to trust.

  842. If we trust him, we trust his word and as a preacher of God's

  843. word, I don't know what churches either say that or don't say

  844. that, but that's what I've got to teach tonight because that's

  845. what Mark 16:15. And 16 says, and I'm not making

    Mark 16:15

  846. a guess about it. That's what it says he that

  847. believes in is baptized shall be saved.

  848. If you have a right to leave out, baptism, I have a right to

  849. relieve that belief. But who's going to do that?

  850. God says don't. You add to or take away from my

  851. word. So we're not doing that tonight.

  852. Tonight. This church did get together and

  853. vote on what it took to please. God, we just try to follow the

  854. word of God. That's all it is.

  855. So tonight, the word says, Mark 16:16.

    Mark 16:16

  856. He, that believes and is baptized shall be saved.

  857. We've got to repent of our sins to accepting 30.

  858. God is commanding all men everywhere to repent.

  859. That means we've got to make a choice that we're going to

  860. follow Jesus and stop sinning and start obeying.

  861. So we've repent of our sins and the bond, our repentance and

  862. upon our belief, and our on, and we're going to go ahead and obey

  863. the Lord. What does he tell us to do?

  864. He tells us to confess Jesus Christ before men.

  865. Matthew 10:32, it's not a one-time thing.

    Matthew 10:32

  866. Matthew 10:32 says, whoever, confesses me before men him will

    Matthew 10:32

  867. I confess before my Father which is in heaven.

  868. Whosoever shall deny me before men him will I deny before my

  869. Father, which is in heaven. We need to confess that we

  870. believe Jesus Christ, the son of God before Men.

  871. First John chapter 4. Makes it very plain that we need

    1 John 4 chapter mention

  872. to confess that. Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

  873. Why do you believe Peter was asked Peter?

  874. What a man said, uphill one of the prophets, one of the set.

  875. What do you believe? I believe you're the Christ.

  876. I believe you're the Son of God. That's what we need to stand up

  877. and say tonight, I believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God and

  878. upon that confession were fit subject for baptism in Acts 8.

  879. And they both went down both Philip and the eunuch into the

  880. water and he baptized him and he went on his way rejoicing.

  881. Tonight, why is baptism? So important, why is he immersed

  882. in water? So important, I do want you to

  883. look at one last person passage right quick.

  884. Please turn to Roman's the sixth chapter in Romans the 6th after

  885. we're talking about change and I want to talk about the important

  886. part right here. This last / I promise.

  887. This is the last verse. Usually at my home congregation

  888. whenever whenever I say ask the brother in there, what does

  889. Glenn mean whenever he says in conclusion and they say it means

  890. absolutely nothing. But look at this passage right

  891. quick and Romans 6 chapter. Verse 3.

  892. Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into

  893. Christ? Jesus have been baptized into

  894. his death. Therefore, we have been buried

  895. with him. With him.

  896. I thought I was only one of the water.

  897. No, we've been buried with him, end get through baptism into

  898. death. That as Christ was raised from

  899. the dead, through the glory of the father.

  900. So we too might walk in newness of Life verse 54.

  901. If we have become United with him in the likeness of his

  902. death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of his

  903. resurrection knowing this that our old Old self was crucified

  904. with him in order that the body of sin might be done away with.

  905. So we would no longer be slaves to sin right there.

  906. Folks were United with him in the likeness of his death,

  907. baptism is a lightness of the death of Jesus Christ.

  908. He died was buried and raised. He says, we do a likeness of

  909. that. In baptism, we do.

  910. I to our sin were buried in water.

  911. Not sprinkled, we don't sprinkle people here.

  912. Sprinkling dirt on somebody doesn't bury him and sprinkling

  913. water on. Somebody doesn't bury him

  914. either. We are immersed in water in the

  915. likeness of his death and then raised to walk in newness of

  916. life. That's why baptism is so

  917. important because it brings about that change that freedom

  918. from sin that death to sin and and a whole new life.

  919. So tonight if you want to start change, that's the very

  920. beginning. It's obeying the gospel.

  921. The good news about Christ's death, burial, Resurrection by

  922. imitating, it in your life. Have you been baptized in a

  923. likeness of Jesus? Death, burial.

  924. Resurrection in baptism tonight. If you haven't, we stand?

  925. Ready and willing to help you do that in our following of Jesus.

  926. Jesus Christ. All of us.

  927. We're not here. We're not a club for perfect

  928. people tonight. We're a bunch of imperfect

  929. people that are trying our best to imitate Jesus Christ, and we

  930. need your help. Won't you come and join with us

  931. tonight on that Journey? Come with us.

  932. If you haven't obeyed the Lord. Now, you know, at least some

  933. primary things to do. So put off and put on to do.

  934. Why don't you do what? You know, you've looked into the

  935. word. If you see that you need to do

  936. that. Then why don't you let us help

  937. you do that? We thank you for listening to

  938. our podcast, put on by the Church of Christ at 22:15 plans.
