  1. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and

  2. of the Holy Spirit, glory to Jesus Christ. Glory

  3. forever. We're wearing red today because today

  4. is the feast day of the unmercenary saints, the

  5. great healers. Who healed unmercenary means they

  6. did not take money. No silver, it says. Most

  7. of them were martyrs, and red is the color of

  8. martyrdom. We have such a riches of themes to

  9. speak of, but let us turn our attention to the

  10. gospel, the first gospel we heard from Luke chapter

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  11. 8, 26. We heard it recently, I guess it was back

  12. in July, we heard St. Matthew's version of this

  13. same account, and I spoke of the demons there.

  14. and of their powerlessness over us because Christ

  15. is risen and he has destroyed the power of death,

  16. the power of sin, and the demons are about as

  17. useless as a $100 bill on the table sitting there

  18. by itself. It can't do a thing. But of course,

  19. the demons can tempt two men to fight over it

  20. and one kill the other. But that's the power

  21. that's there. But I want you to imagine a scene.

  22. From the Old Testament. Deuteronomy 32, which

  23. I heard a teaching on the other day, and I'm

  24. excited about it, and I want to share that with

  25. you too. Because I learned something new that

  26. I didn't know. There's so much. This is why I

  27. keep reading. Deuteronomy 32 tells us this. When

  28. the Most High, so God, the Most High God, not

  29. an angel, not some other kind of spirit, The

  30. Old Testament calls some of these things gods,

  31. lowercase g. The Most High God is the one who

  32. created heaven and earth and all things. When

  33. the Most High God apportioned the nations, when

  34. he divided humankind, he fixed the boundaries

  35. of the peoples according to the number of the

  36. gods, that is, the angels. Fix that in your mind,

  37. that every nation has an angel. But we know,

  38. if we read the Old Testament, if we have paid

  39. attention to the gospel we just heard, there

  40. were many angels who fell away. And they demanded

  41. worship as if they were God. So, listen to this

  42. Psalm verse, Psalm 81. God stood in the congregation

  43. of the gods, and in the midst he shall judge

  44. them. Who is God judging here? God is standing,

  45. he's coming to this, what should be an angelic

  46. council, what should be kind. discerning, loving,

  47. protective angels for the nations and for people,

  48. but they have fallen away and they have rebelled

  49. against God. And God is now standing in their

  50. midst. This is what the psalm says, Psalm 81.

  51. God stood in the congregation of the gods and

  52. he shall judge them. And the psalm continues.

  53. How long will you judge unrighteously? God says

  54. to them. And accept the sinners. He says to them,

  55. judge for the orphan and the poor man. He says,

  56. do justice to the humble and the pauper. Rescue

  57. the poor man and the needy. From the hand of

  58. the evil one, deliver that person. And this is

  59. what he then says to these fallen angels as he

  60. stands before them. They have not known nor understood

  61. they walk in darkness. Let the foundations of

  62. the earth be shaken. The story we just heard

  63. of Christ coming to this land of the gatherings

  64. where people were tending pigs. They were pagans.

  65. They were Roman pagans. They used pigs for their

  66. sacrifices. This was a sacrificial meal. That

  67. man that was possessed by a legion, five, ten,

  68. whoever knows, of demons, said to Jesus what?

  69. Jesus, thou son of the most high God, don't send

  70. us into the abyss before the time. Is it the

  71. time of judgment? They knew this verse. They

  72. saw it coming, but they didn't know exactly what

  73. was going to happen. Psalm 81, are you starting

  74. to recognize this song? We sing it on Holy Saturday.

  75. Let all the foundations of the earth be shaken.

  76. I said, ye are gods, false gods, fallen angels,

  77. and all of you sons of the Most High, but like

  78. men, ye die, and like one of the rulers, do ye

  79. fall. Arise, O God, judge the earth, for thou

  80. shalt have an inheritance among all the nations.

  81. You recognize that now. Arise, I could ask these

  82. guys to sing it for us maybe. On Holy Saturday,

  83. we sing this prophecy of what Christ will do.

  84. Jesus the Savior, the true God, the light of

  85. light. Are you come, says the legion of demons

  86. to Christ. Are you come to punish us before the

  87. time? That is, after God will judge. They know

  88. that God will bring justice and truth and new

  89. life. Do justice to the humble. Judge for the

  90. orphan and the poor man. Rescue the pauper and

  91. the needy. This is what Christ has done. Arise,

  92. O God, and judge the earth. Rise up, Lord. Having

  93. risen from the dead, then... Jesus stands in

  94. the midst of these demons to judge them. St.

  95. Paul tells us very clearly, for our struggle

  96. is not against flesh and blood, other people,

  97. but against the rulers. These entities, these

  98. spirits, against the authorities, against the

  99. powers of the dark world, and against the spiritual

  100. forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Let God

  101. arise and let his enemies be scattered, we sing

  102. at Pascha. The enemy is not people. It's not

  103. the opposing political party or presidential

  104. candidate. It's not the Muslims who are killing

  105. Christians. It's not whatever enemy you might

  106. decide. It's these powers that inflict temptation

  107. and evil upon God's world. It's not communists

  108. or anarchists or sinners, those who are different.

  109. And we were all, before our baptism, enslaved.

  110. Through death on the cross, Jesus destroyed him

  111. that had the power of death, says St. Paul in

  112. Hebrews. that is, the devil, and delivered those

  113. who all their life were subject to bondage through

  114. fear of death. Jesus says the thief comes to

  115. steal and to kill and to destroy. And the devil

  116. is a thief and a liar from the beginning. But

  117. Jesus says, I am come that you might have life

  118. and have it. more abundantly. He is our shepherd.

  119. He is our protector. He is our guide. He is our

  120. enlightener. He is the one who loves us, who

  121. knows what we need. Some things we don't want

  122. to bring to Christ, do we? We kind of divide

  123. them off. We don't allow him to change us, to

  124. sanctify us. Like the people in this village

  125. who said, go away. They were afraid of him. This

  126. man, this possessed man, was serving as an oracle

  127. with demonic powers speaking through him. Let's

  128. not imagine, however, that Christ is going to

  129. steal something from you or from me. He doesn't

  130. look for slaves. He says, you are my friends.

  131. If we think he wants to take something away from

  132. us besides sin and death and evil and ultimately

  133. suffering in the life of the age to come, then

  134. we misunderstand. Total obedience to Christ never

  135. leads to regrets. It leads to freedom from sin

  136. because we confess it and we're free of that

  137. stain. which divides us from ourself and from

  138. God and from one another. We are free from death

  139. because he was crucified and died and rose from

  140. the dead, and he promises us resurrection. And

  141. we taste it every time we go to communion. And

  142. he promises freedom from ourself, our constant

  143. stream of confusion, like legion. Life and more

  144. abundantly doesn't mean... I get the nicest car,

  145. I'm going to live forever, I'll die a peaceful

  146. death, everything's going to be great in my life.

  147. No, it means God's life, which we partake of

  148. most perfectly when we receive Holy Communion.

  149. Let me just summarize here. In terms of our core

  150. beliefs, The beliefs that shape the way a person

  151. reacts emotionally and how we behave? What would

  152. it mean to believe with all one's heart and with

  153. all one's soul and with all one's might that

  154. Jesus is indeed the Son of God, the one who stood

  155. in the midst of these evil beings and judged

  156. them? What does it mean that he is one essence

  157. with the Heavenly Father, with power over things

  158. visible and invisible? What does it mean? To

  159. believe that, what it means is that we look at

  160. the world, we look at ourself, we look at our

  161. neighbor, and the person who might consider themselves

  162. our enemy, through the lens of Christ's compassion

  163. and his humility and his love. One writer says

  164. this, a quote, this would mean striving to respond

  165. as Christ would and rejoicing with the heavenly

  166. joy every time his grace, by his grace, every

  167. time we can. We would walk the extra mile and

  168. that would help us to participate in the light

  169. of light. And being called by Christ's name would

  170. be honor beyond all honor. bestowing not just

  171. human dignity and worth, but divine worth upon

  172. us as a vessel of clay. It is not I who live,

  173. but Christ who lives in me. And the life that

  174. I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the

  175. Son of God who gave himself and was delivered

  176. up for me. We would believe that our soul would

  177. always be oriented towards Christ as the ultimate

  178. direction of our life and none other. What is

  179. shaping our life, he is saying here? What is

  180. the ultimate meaning of our existence? And what

  181. is the ultimate goal of our time in this sorrowful

  182. world? It was created by the Son of God, and

  183. he is saving it and rescuing it. Believing all

  184. this would change everything about our life.

  185. This is what it means. as I keep saying week

  186. after week, to be Christian on purpose. To our

  187. Lord, the destroyer of sin and death and the

  188. evil one, be glory now and ever to ages of ages.
