  1. The word redeemed is a very interesting word.

  2. And it is defined as the idea of buying back, something from

  3. bondage. In other words, it's a matter of

  4. buying back by paying a price. And sometimes the price is very

  5. high. Have you ever heard the term?

  6. A king's Ransom? It's very old term.

  7. Maybe we've used it in her own vernacular over the years.

  8. Somebody might say, oh, that is so valuable.

  9. They must have paid a king's ransom for it.

  10. Have you ever stopped to consider where that came from

  11. that phrase? A king's Ransom, I read that it

  12. went all the way back to the time of the Crusades.

  13. When the king of in England was named Richard Coeur de Leon and

  14. he was captured by the enemy. Now, history tells us that the

  15. people loved their kid, wouldn't it be great to be such a king?

  16. I'm talking about in in the common fleshly world to be such

  17. a leader, such a ruler, such a king that the people love Loved

  18. you so much that they were willing to submit to excessive

  19. taxation, just to free, you and redeem you.

  20. Well, history tells us this King was captured and he was cast

  21. into prison, and the people did just that they submitted to

  22. excessive Taxation and large sums of money were taken in.

  23. I also read that rich Nobles saw what was going on and they love

  24. the king to and they dumped money in and the coffers

  25. literally were overflowing with money.

  26. To buy back that King and from that story in history we now

  27. have the phrase, a king's Ransom.

  28. Also going back to the time of the Crusades, there was Sir

  29. grimwald and he was captured by the saracens.

  30. Now the saracens that the term used to describe Muslims who

  31. were evil and wicked and cruel. And those that opposed the

  32. Crusades Now you don't really it's nothing new for them to be

  33. cruel and hateful and that's exactly what they were and they

  34. took this man. Sir grimwald and they said we're

  35. going to execute him. We're going to take his life.

  36. unless, Unless his precious wife is willing to cut her right hand

  37. off and submit her right hand for her loving husband.

  38. You know, the story tells that she didn't even bat an eye, she

  39. didn't even can take time to consider.

  40. She says take it and she outstretched her arm and took

  41. off her hand for her husband. You see, there's always a high

  42. price for Redemption. Buying someone back that is in

  43. bondage. And I want you to understand

  44. today and maybe in prayerfully this, we'll help you to

  45. understand what price was paid for you.

  46. You might think in your life, but there's nothing that that

  47. you have, and no one in your life that's ever done anything

  48. for you. Sometimes we feel sorry for

  49. ourselves and our mind goes there.

  50. But if you're a child of God, you've been redeemed and you've

  51. been bought back out of the bondage of something.

  52. We're going to get to that in just a minute. now, Peter says

  53. that you've been bought or redeemed, By the precious blood

  54. of Christ now, very briefly. We'll get back to this later.

  55. Obviously, those that were listening and those that read

  56. from Peter, would understand what he's making reference to.

  57. When they talk about a lamb being slain, we talked about the

  58. idea where the children of Israel were in Egyptian bondage.

  59. God passed down a plague that the firstborn would die.

  60. So watch that the firstborn was really sentenced to die until

  61. what the blood, not just the blood, but the Precious Blood of

  62. the Lamb was applied. I'd they took the life of that

  63. lamb. They put the blood also in one

  64. Basin and they took that blood and dipped it hyssop and put it

  65. on the doorposts and the lintel. And the Death Angel would pass

  66. over that house. What am I saying?

  67. I'm saying that the death angel would pass over and because of

  68. the blood they were redeemed or they were Passed over and not

  69. killed but we're talking about something.

  70. That's even greater as great as that, was it pales in comparison

  71. to what Jesus has done for us. Taking these two verses to all

  72. want to ask two questions. Number one, what are we redeemed

  73. from? And number two, what are we

  74. redeemed with now? I like to stay.

  75. Can I call it the holy spirit's outline?

  76. We're going to take these two verses, we're going to go

  77. through and do an exposition of these two verses and build our

  78. thoughts from it. The question is, what are we

  79. redeemed from? Somebody might say, well, wait a

  80. minute, everything in my life is going pretty good.

  81. I don't have a need to be removed from any kind of

  82. bondage. I have a great life.

  83. What does Peter say though about this life?

  84. First of all, we understand we are redeemed from something and

  85. it is bondage. Now, I understand that we can

  86. look at it from a general sense and we can say that when we've

  87. been redeemed, we were redeemed from the bondage of sin but

  88. there's more There's more. Notice First Peter 1 and 14.

  89. It says, as obedient children, not conforming yourself to your

  90. former lust. In other words, Peter is saying

  91. that the element of our life prior to Redemption is lust.

  92. Now, last as defined is this, it is a strong and illicit desire,

  93. that reflects the bondage of sin and all of that, speaks for

  94. itself and James chapter, 1 and verse 15.

  95. You know, sometimes people say, well, God is testing me.

  96. God is throwing obstacles before me.

  97. That's not true. God is the right.

  98. God is our refuge. The Bible says, when we talk

  99. about Sin though, James 115, that lust, when lust has

  100. conceived, it brings forth, sin and sin.

  101. When it is finished brings forth death.

  102. The new King James says desire. They're all right, we'll go back

  103. to verse 14. Please first Peter 114 goes

  104. further. Not conforming yourself to the

  105. former lusts as in your ignorance.

  106. Now, I know that there are things in our life that we learn

  107. over time. There are those that have just

  108. entered into the painting trade. And you're starting off as a

  109. first period of Prentiss. There are things that you do not

  110. know. And over time you learn those

  111. things. So the day that you begin, your

  112. job as a first period Apprentice, as part of the trade

  113. you are ignorant of various aspects of it.

  114. But that's not what I'm talking about.

  115. What is the ignorance that we are freed from or redeemed?

  116. From? What ignorance do we have in

  117. mind? Go back to John 17 and verse 25

  118. in John. Chapter 17 and verse 25.

    John 17 chapter mention

  119. This is Jesus Christ and he's praying to his father He said, o

  120. righteous father. In other words, father, you are

  121. righteous and then he says the world has not known you.

  122. That's out of ignorance, but I have known you and these have

  123. known that you sent me. So, therein lies.

  124. The bondage of those that are not saved, they do not know God,

  125. that's the clearest and most pervasive expression of man's

  126. ignorance and they're ignorant of God.

  127. But do you remember in John chapter 8?

    John 8 chapter mention

  128. When Jesus was talking those Pharisees, he actually describes

  129. people that were ignorant by choice.

  130. Remember when Jesus says he says, I'm gonna go away.

  131. Now the one thing they did understand, they did understand

  132. that he meant death. He said I'm going to go away and

  133. you're going to seek me but you will not find me and where I'm

  134. going, you cannot come and all they could think is wait a

  135. minute, if he's going to die and he we're not going to go where

  136. he's going to go, then he must be going to the deepest part of

  137. hell, because we're going to heaven.

  138. And Jesus says, your father is the devil, you've got your

  139. directions, mixed up, you're not going to heaven, you don't know

  140. me and you don't know the father, if you don't know me.

  141. And you know what they said, they said, well, who are you all

  142. the Miracles that Jesus performed?

  143. It should have been obvious who Jesus was, but they willfully

  144. were ignorant of that. Remember, as I don't know, year

  145. ago, whatever. When I preach the sermon, I

  146. talked about willful ignorance. And I talked about the idea,

  147. Idea that today we have a category or a classification of

  148. somebody in the in the world today that says that I may not

  149. know her or I'm just going to ride the fence on this.

  150. It's called an agnostic. Never forget that the Latin

  151. equivalent for agnostic is ignoramus.

  152. Same word and some people willfully are ignorant.

  153. When you're redeemed, you're not only redeemed from lust but

  154. you're redeemed from ignorance your because now you know God

  155. now Notice some other passages about ignorance that's attached

  156. to those that are not saved. Look at First Corinthians 2 and

  157. 14, but the natural man or the unsaved, man, does not know,

  158. does not receive the things of the spirit of God for, they are

  159. foolishness to him nor can, he know them because they are

  160. spiritually discerned. So, in other words, something

  161. happens in our life. That is revelation Revelation.

  162. All I'm talking about is what's been revealed already.

  163. There's not going to be new revelation of talking about the

  164. word of God. So somebody is ignorant of the

  165. truth, they're ignorant of God, they do not know God, but then

  166. Revelation makes the difference. That's when the Bible says that

  167. the gospel has the power to save one scholar mr.

  168. Shepard wrote this about revelation.

  169. Because sometimes people say, you know, I know God.

  170. I know God's will. I know God's will for my life.

  171. Shepherd says, this man by his natural faculties without

  172. Revelation. That's without the word of God.

  173. Could not learn the will of God, but in order that he might know

  174. it. The spirit of God, who knows,

  175. the things of God was transferred to the apostles and

  176. made known to them of God's Will, and they reveal it to the

  177. people. So, the natural man, then is the

  178. man. He who has never heard the will

  179. of God for. He has no way of knowing until

  180. those who received the Revelation, make it known to

  181. him. And that's when the Bible talks

  182. about that, God has chosen the foolish sness of preaching to

  183. save those. That believe what makes the

  184. difference Revelation? All right, now Galatians chapter

    Galatians 4 chapter mention

  185. 4. You know, Paul's going to talk

  186. about to two kinds of people, a safe person and a unsafe person

  187. but first in Galatians, 4 and 8. Paul spoke of a time before when

  188. they were not saved and this is what he said.

  189. He said. But then indeed, when you did

  190. not know God, you serve those things by Nature that are not

  191. Gods. Then he says to those that are

  192. saved, Galatians 4 and 9. But now, after you have known

  193. God or rather of known or are known of God, Did you know?

  194. That you can't know, God. Unless God knows you.

  195. That's the question. The Bible says, the Lord knows

  196. those that are his Those that are his are those that obey him.

  197. Jesus said, if you love me, keep my Commandments.

  198. If you love me keep my words in other words, obey me.

  199. So when we obey the Lord and obey, the commands of the Lord

  200. and are redeemed and redeemed from Ignorance by Revelation, or

  201. the word of God, then we are known of God.

  202. And that's a tremendous blessing.

  203. Go back to verse 18 of our text. 1st Peter, chapter 1.

  204. There's something else here. Knowing that you were not

  205. redeemed with corruptible things, like, silver or gold.

  206. Watch what it says, from your aimless conduct.

  207. Now, the word aimless, there is translated as futile.

  208. Now, Redemption is not only from the things that are governed by

  209. sin and removing ourselves from that but get this it also guides

  210. us away from a futile life. And you might wonder what in the

  211. world are you talking about a futile life?

  212. You know what Peter says, it's your aimless conduct.

  213. You know what that means. It means it doesn't matter.

  214. All the great things you will do in your life without being

  215. redeemed, your life is futile. I'm going to tell you there's

  216. some good people today. There's some great people that

  217. have done great things with medicine, but without being

  218. redeemed, your life is futile without the Lord.

  219. It is aimless. It is vain.

  220. It is empty. One scholar said, the life of

  221. the unsaved man is a life that fails to meet the standards of

  222. God. I want to ask you a question.

  223. Consider this I want you to think about your life.

  224. And I want you to ask yourself the question.

  225. Why am I here? Why am I here?

  226. Why was I born? Everybody wants to have a

  227. purpose. Everybody wants to have some

  228. kind of guidance or some kind of thing in their life, that gives

  229. them purpose. But you are here for one reason,

  230. and one reason only. And it's the only reason that

  231. God created man and that is here, it is to honor God.

  232. And if your life is not honoring, God, it is aimless or

  233. futile, it has no purpose. You know, when God created man,

  234. he could have created a bunch of robots that just fell in line

  235. and fell down before God and did exactly what God wanted them to

  236. do. But God did not do that.

  237. He created man with the freedom of choice and free will.

  238. And his desire is and his purpose for you.

  239. And your life is to honor him with your life.

  240. All right, so what are we redeemed from lust ignorance

  241. futility. But there's one more look at

  242. Verse 18. Again, please knowing that you

  243. were not redeemed with corruptible things like silver

  244. or gold from your aimless conduct received by tradition of

  245. your father's. Now what's the traditional?

  246. Addition that we are talking about.

  247. I got to make a couple points here, bear with me on this.

  248. Sometimes people say that we do what we do out of tradition.

  249. Now, there is a difference between something that we do and

  250. tradition simply means that which is passed down by our

  251. forefathers or those that have gone on before us right now.

  252. Traditions are great. There's a lot of traditions in

  253. my family. Thanksgiving is a tradition and

  254. on that day, we do the same thing.

  255. We watch the Cowboys play at 1:30.

  256. Hopefully, they don't lose. We all eat at the same time, we

  257. all do the same things we have traditions in our family.

  258. We have a number of traditions that we do in our family and

  259. there's nothing wrong with that. Peter says, though, when you're

  260. redeemed, you are free from tradition.

  261. The question is, what's he talking about?

  262. He is talking about religious Tradition.

  263. Now, got to make this point, there's a difference between

  264. religious tradition that contradicts the word of God, and

  265. there's a difference between that and Apostolic tradition.

  266. Now, Apostolic tradition, is what we read about in the word

  267. of God, and when we read in the New Testament, the apostles

  268. doctrine, that is Apostolic tradition, and what they

  269. commanded. And what They did we follow.

  270. And that's right. That's not what Peters talking

  271. about. He's talking about the

  272. Traditions, the religious traditions of their fathers.

  273. Now, to the Jew he was talking about Jewish Traditions were

  274. redeemed from that to the Gentile.

  275. He's talking about all the things that the Gentiles were

  276. involved in by tradition all of their Idols.

  277. What do you redeem from those Traditions too?

  278. Traditions are very obvious and they're very prevalent in our

  279. life. You know, Jesus, when he talked

  280. about the Traditions Jesus spoke of that very thing in Matthew 15

  281. and 9, he said, and in vain, they do worship me teaching for

  282. doctrines, the Commandments of men.

  283. So this is in response to the scribes and the Pharisees.

  284. But what they said, they said that about the Lord's.

  285. Disciples. Oh, they're doing wrong.

  286. They don't wash their hands before they eat.

  287. Big deal. You know, the Jews were by way

  288. of tradition. They were more concerned with

  289. the outward appearance, then they were on what was inside.

  290. You know, Jesus said, Jesus, dealt with that very thing.

  291. And he talked about the weightier matters, you neglect,

  292. the weightier matters of the law.

  293. Oh, you're like a fair Shake person.

  294. That's counting all the this and that and whatever and following

  295. suit with all that but inside you're not right.

  296. The weightier matters of the law.

  297. You neglect will achieve the said in response to these.

  298. It said your disciples are doing wrong because they don't wash

  299. their hands before they eat. He said, you are taking the

  300. traditions of men and you are making it a Doctrine.

  301. We are free from that. In Hong Kong.

  302. There was an evangelist spoke about a man that was working in

  303. a hotel. A very, very, very nice

  304. well-behaved. Respectful well-dressed young

  305. man. And this evangelist goes to him

  306. and he says you know what I'd like to do?

  307. You're such a good kid. You're such a good young man.

  308. I would love it. If you'd read the Bible.

  309. Could I get you a Bible? Could you read the Bible?

  310. And the young man said, absolutely not thank you, sir,

  311. but I could never read the Bible while my father was alive.

  312. Tradition. Passed down from the father's.

  313. You know, there's people today that don't follow what the word

  314. of God says, because following the word of God, make condemn,

  315. or convict a family member. But we don't need to follow what

  316. the family member does. We're redeemed from those

  317. traditions. We just follow the word of God.

  318. In Korea. They're so intimately tied many

  319. times to their mothers and grandmothers and fathers and

  320. forefathers that they can't make a break to embrace the gospel,

  321. they're caught in Tradition and those are things that are

  322. bondage. So what are we redeemed from?

  323. Well obviously the bondage of sin specifically, lust ignorance

  324. futility and tradition but the second question What are we

  325. redeemed with now? This is really interesting

  326. because when you think about what are we redeemed with Peter

  327. begins, First In this passage with, with the negative side and

  328. he said not silver or gold. In fact, he says, knowing that

  329. you were not redeemed with corruptible things like silver

  330. or gold, the negative aspect of it.

  331. First is not silver and gold. Now, why did he say that?

  332. What could he have possibly been referring to when he said silver

  333. or gold? Now, remember redeemed is to be

  334. bought back with the price. It's to pay a price to redeem.

  335. You look at Exodus chapter 30, Talking about the idea.

    Exodus 30 chapter mention

  336. They would have understood about silver and gold.

  337. Exodus chapter 30 beginning there in verse 11.

    Exodus 30 chapter mention

  338. This is regarding Ransom money. Says then the Lord spoke to

  339. Moses saying when you take the census of the children of Israel

  340. for their number, then every man shall give a ransom for himself

  341. to the Lord when you number them.

  342. There may be no plague among them when you number them.

  343. Now, God does not command them to take a census.

  344. He's just saying when you take the census, this is what you're

  345. going to do and you're going to offer Something valuable silver

  346. and gold. So there's no plague that comes

  347. upon you. Now, by the way, at this

  348. particular time, there were no coins.

  349. In fact, I read the coins were invented and used for the first

  350. time in 700 BC. So these were actual literal

  351. pieces of silver now, go to Exodus, 30 and 13.

  352. That is what everyone among those who are numbered shall

  353. give half of a shekel, according to the shekel of the sanctuary

  354. and a shekel, it says is 20 Gyros and a half.

  355. Shekel shall be an offering to the Lord.

  356. Look at the next verse verse 14, Everyone included among those

  357. who were numbered from twenty years old and above shall give

  358. an offering to the Lord. In other words, when you take

  359. the census and the people are numbered everyone, that's twenty

  360. years old, and above has to make atonement for themself to avoid

  361. the plague. All right, you might ask, well,

  362. why would God send a plague for taking a census?

  363. You remember when David got himself in trouble for doing

  364. that? Do you remember what David did?

  365. David numbered, the people. And that was wrong.

  366. David did wrong, David got in trouble for numbering the

  367. people, why did David number the people instead of putting his

  368. faith in God and His trust in God, he figured out this.

  369. I'm going to count up how many we got and let's see how big our

  370. force is. Got in trouble for that.

  371. Numbering the people. So when Exodus says, when they

  372. do that, when you number said you got to pay a ransom, the

  373. implication is that it was wrong to do that.

  374. And those that were involved were required to pay a ransom

  375. for their sin. One commentator wrote this, he

  376. said the taking of a census was bound up with the religious

  377. ritual of purification due to the fact that the census itself

  378. was considered a sin. It was considered a lack of

  379. Faith in God. So it had to have a cleansing

  380. feature by doing this. The Israelites would be

  381. delivered from the punishment. That would they were liable to

  382. be inflicted on them on account of their sin implicit to the

  383. census and quote. Now, you know what Peter says

  384. he's you're talking about something that is so great.

  385. He said it's not silver and gold.

  386. Exodus what was it? Silver and gold. pieces of

  387. silver, monetary means Peter says not silver and not gold,

  388. but then he says, but from the positive side, but from the

  389. precious blood, Jesus Christ without blemish and without

  390. spot. In other words, the price of our

  391. Redemption had to be only With blood, you know, the word

  392. precious. Comes from the word to my aios.

  393. And it means to be held in honor.

  394. It means to be esteemed dear now just like the lamb was

  395. unblemished during the Passover and spotlessness.

  396. Somebody might say, the wait a minute, was it all the blood

  397. precious? I mean, after all weren't they

  398. all just Innocent animals, innocent victims.

  399. And the answer to that is no, in fact, if you had a sheep or you

  400. had a lamb and that lamb was without blemish was without

  401. spot, it was considered precious the word to my os'.

  402. Now, the Passover feast, they had to do that.

  403. They took one of those kind of lamps now.

  404. Why was it precious? I read something interesting

  405. about that. It was precious because it

  406. represented get this. This future Generations.

  407. In other words in the breeding process, a Shepherd that had a

  408. lamb that was precious or was without spot or blemish in

  409. represented future Generations, it was money in his pocket.

  410. Now. When you talk about the

  411. Passover, get this. What a Shepherd had a lamb like

  412. that. And he had to give up the lamb.

  413. It was a tremendous sacrifice to the shepherd and it was a

  414. tremendous shit sacrifice to the land.

  415. You want to know what price has been paid for you?

  416. In this God is the shepherd. God paid the price, John 3:16

    John 3:16

  417. for God. So loved the world that he gave

  418. his only begotten son that whosoever believeth in him

  419. should not perish but have everlasting life.

  420. So God is the shepherd and he paid a great price.

  421. Jesus is the Lamb, the Priceless precious lamb of God.

  422. And he gave his life. For All Mankind.

  423. I'll tell you something. If understanding that?

  424. Doesn't make us have a greater desire to serve God.

  425. I don't know what will our life is aimless without the Lord.

  426. Is the Lord in your life, is he the Lord of your life?

  427. You know really I got to make this point to we talked about,

  428. we talked about byproducts, we talk about things that see the

  429. symptom of the problem. What do we always say?

  430. What's the one thing we always say?

  431. We always talk about attendance and priorities, we always talk

  432. about that. But that is a symptom.

  433. It's a symptom of a greater problem.

  434. The problem is the heart. The problem is, we are not

  435. changed. If we were changed on the

  436. inside, out, that all of those other things would fall into

  437. place, we would have our priorities right automatically.

  438. You are here today because you woke up this morning and you

  439. said, I have an appointment with my Lord and there's nothing else

  440. that is more important than what I'm going to do right now.

  441. Everything else that scheduled in the days after this, and it

  442. doesn't matter. This is the most important thing

  443. in our life. Why is that?

  444. Because God is the shepherd, gave his Priceless lamb to

  445. redeem us and get us out of the bondage of sin, which was lust

  446. ignorance futility, and tradition.

  447. And now we have eternal life. In First Peter chapter 1 and

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  448. verse 20. Watch this.

  449. And First Peter 1 and verse 20, it says he indeed was

  450. foreordained before the foundation of the world but was

  451. manifest in these last times for you.

  452. In other words, the great sacrifice of the Lamb had to be

  453. manifest in these last days or during the last dispensation of

  454. time. And now he stands and knocks,

  455. you know, Jesus said in Revelation, 3 and 20, he said,

  456. behold I stand at knock stand at the door and knock.

  457. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come to

  458. him and will dine with him and he with me.

  459. The question is, the question is, and the point is the door

  460. knob or the latches on your side, you got to open it up to

  461. open up your heart, to the Lord. That's what he did for all of us

  462. in our life. I had love my kids.

  463. You love your kids. Nobody in the world has to tell

  464. us to love our kids. Nobody has to tell me to love my

  465. wife. My family.

  466. There's a lot of important things that I have to do as a

  467. man as a father, as a husband. But I'm going to tell you

  468. something without Jesus Christ being first in my life.

  469. Every single thing I do is aimless and futile.
