  1. Hope you have a Bible nearby and and you can follow along with us

  2. as we read a little bit about our Lord and get to know a

  3. little bit more about him in John, chapter 4, if you want to

    John 4 chapter mention

  4. go to one of the gospels and he want to learn about Jesus,

  5. there's no more. There's no better place to go

  6. than the Book of John and that's where our message will be taken

  7. this morning. And my studies through the Book

  8. of John on the last year or two. I noticed something that I

  9. hadn't caught before, and I don't think it's an accident and

  10. how these things come together and where they come together.

  11. But whether or not it was intended or not, we can

  12. certainly take note of the fact that Jesus connected with both

  13. the very highest and the Very lowest of society.

  14. In John chapter 3, when no doubt Jesus was exhausted from another

    John 3 chapter mention

  15. very busy day, we find him. Discussing the kingdom, with

  16. Nicodemus, Nicodemus, was a wealthy powerful prestigious

  17. intelligent educated, and morally and religiously

  18. respected, man. Among the highest in the land,

  19. this man Nicodemus was Yet. Jesus did not write him off.

  20. He spoke with him about the beauties of God's love and the

  21. coming Kingdom. And then we come to chapter 4

  22. and we meet a character who is everything that Nicodemus was

  23. not. Let's notice some of the

  24. comparisons between the two, some of, the contrast Nicodemus

  25. was a man, and the woman from Samaritan, of course, was a

  26. woman. He was a Jew.

  27. She was a Samaritan. He was a person of influence.

  28. She was a nobody, he worshipped at the right place.

  29. She worshipped and the wrong place.

  30. He belonged to the religious right of the day.

  31. She was a religious Outcast. He was morally pure and she was

  32. spiritually destitute. They were both miles away from

  33. where they needed to be, but they were in totally different

  34. directions, yet Jesus in his love and Concern for both of

  35. them. We see is equally great to

  36. Jesus. They were both sheep without a

  37. shepherd and all he longed to take both of them into his fold.

  38. It's particularly fascinating to me how naturally he connected

  39. with a Samaritan woman. Let's see.

  40. How from the story that John relays to us how the story

  41. unfolds? And the great love of Jesus, I

  42. love that we should be striving to emulate in our lives.

  43. In this little story we find that Jesus the model Soul winner

  44. shows the rest of us and reaching out to the lost that

  45. barriers can be overcome. We see this with with nearly

  46. everyone, we meet there are some kinds of barriers between us and

  47. between them as we try to lead them to Jesus.

  48. We can overcome those barriers just like Jesus.

  49. Did Jesus overcame racial barriers?

  50. He overcame gender barriers, he overcame me National barriers,

  51. religious barriers, more barriers and physical barriers.

  52. The physical barrier in this story is that he had to have

  53. been. After this lengthy Journey

  54. exhausted, he overcame these barriers to win this woman's

  55. heart and soul, how did he do it?

  56. Well, with all their differences, he found Common

  57. Ground. He found that they both needed.

  58. Something, they both needed water.

  59. They were both thirsty. We find that Paul.

  60. Uses this same idea approach in First Corinthians 9 verse 19,

    1 Corinthians 9:19

  61. through 23. I am become all things to all

  62. men. That I might save some.

  63. Well, Jesus deplored the state of the Samaritan woman.

  64. She was not where she should be. He knew that and he wanted to

  65. change that but it didn't come right off the bat and just start

  66. slapping her around. Like, sometimes Christians, do

  67. not thinking about, what if I was where she is, or what if I

  68. was where he is, we fail to do that.

  69. Sometimes Jesus wasn't like that.

  70. I thought things through he used Common Sense, the Bible teaches

  71. and in First Timothy second Timothy 3:16 that all scripture

    2 Timothy 3:16

  72. is given by inspiration of God and is profitable every single

  73. word in the Bible is beneficial. The Holy Spirit.

  74. Never waste words. He had at first glance verse 3

  75. and 4 as we read in our texts seem to be of no moment seemed

  76. to hold no great significance. But beneath the surface, their

  77. significance, swell Wells. Let's read first.

  78. John John 4 verses 1 through 4 therefore, when the Lord knew

    John 4:1–4

  79. that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized

  80. more disciples than John, although Jesus himself did not

  81. baptize but his disciples. He left Judea and departed again

  82. to Galilee but he needed to go through Samaria.

  83. Verse three and four, what possible significance, could

  84. these two verses have he's going to make the trip to Galilee.

  85. But what of what importance is it that he passes through sychar

  86. and Samaria on his way to Galilee, well, The Jews despised

  87. hated really, the Samaritans that lived in this region right

  88. here. And when they would ordinarily,

  89. make a trip from Judah to Galilee, instead of going the

  90. shortest route, they would go across the Jordan River, go all

  91. the way around and then come into Galilee.

  92. Why they hated them. They despise them so much.

  93. They didn't want to be around them.

  94. They didn't want to see them and they didn't want to be defiled

  95. by passing through their country, their region.

  96. The Bible says he needed to go through Samaria.

  97. Why the 70 mile journey to Galilee through Samaria took

  98. three days on foot, but most Jews would take the long hot

  99. desert road from Jerusalem to Jericho up the Jordan Valley

  100. which took seven days an extra four days.

  101. They would go because their religious and racial disdain for

  102. the Samaritans. This area.

  103. Samaria today is referred to that was Menachem, begin, I

  104. believe. Who first began referred to it

  105. as the West Bank. They stayed away from that area.

  106. another reason, why People may not have always traveled that

  107. way, was because they were concerned for their personal

  108. safety. This was a dangerous, right.

  109. We have find also in verse 9 as John narrates, the story, the

  110. Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.

  111. Why was that? Let me give you the fastbacks on

  112. the samiri situation and Sumerian with the Samaritan.

  113. On this is important. I think it's interesting as well

  114. as valuable for us to know this, the children of Israel.

  115. That's the northern 10 tribes committed idolatry and worship

  116. the gods of other nations. So, God as a punishment to them,

  117. just like, he'd warn them Cynthia, syrians which came from

  118. the area where modern day Iraq, Iran and Syria are low and Syria

  119. are located. He sent these people to take the

  120. Israelites of Samaria. Captive, read about this in

  121. second Kings, chapter 17, is about 750 years before Jesus met

    2 Kings 17 chapter mention

  122. this woman. And in Samaria.

  123. Well, the Assyrians settled into this region.

  124. And after the Captivity, and these people, the Israelites

  125. were allowed to go back. They returned to Samaria.

  126. And now they settled in and intermingled and intermarried

  127. with the Sumerian, the Samaritans, or with the

  128. Assyrians and they gained the name of being the Samaritans.

  129. And then though, as time walk rolled on, they decided that

  130. they wanted to help. Those that Judah build the

  131. temple in Jerusalem. Well, this offer was flatly

  132. refused and as a result of that, they became bitter enemies and

  133. they built their own temple on Mount gerizim, which was right

  134. here, was right the same place. In fact, when Jesus is talking

  135. to the woman at the well, he's just right at the foot of this

  136. mountain, where these people for also long had worshiped and

  137. worshipped in error because God said that was not where you were

  138. to worship. Well.

  139. When their temple on the mountain was destroyed, they

  140. still directed their worship to mount.

  141. Good reason, the Samaritans were guilty of open religious

  142. apostasy now, they pretended, like many people today, do and

  143. Christianity. Well, it just doesn't really

  144. matter that much where you worship as long as you worship.

  145. But they were wrong. In evaluating their situation

  146. that way they pretended that those in Jerusalem.

  147. Now they are the ones who had digressed.

  148. And in doing so they rejected all of the Old Testament books

  149. except the first five books. They said those other books,

  150. those aren't really God's word that was part of the arrogance

  151. of the, the tribes that were located in Samaritan Samaria.

  152. Now less, you get the wrong impression.

  153. The southern tribes were not as pure as the driven snow either.

  154. They were all so disobedient rebellious.

  155. It seems like they were just a few steps behind the Samaritans

  156. in their wickedness. And in their idolatry.

  157. But at least they did worship at the right place over time.

  158. The Samaritans were further alienated from the Jews as they

  159. intermingled. And as they intermarried with

  160. the Assyrians, we don't usually give the historical background

  161. as we look at this story, but I think it helps us and

  162. understanding why the Jews? And the Samaritans were such

  163. bitter enemies. And why it was such a big deal

  164. that Jesus would go through. In this region.

  165. I hate this also helps us to understand what a slam it was.

  166. When the Jews said of Jesus, in John 8 48, do we not rightly say

  167. that you are a Samaritan and have a demon that was a racial

  168. slur. Had a had a had a horrible

  169. intention behind it. And what they were trying to say

  170. about G is worse than any of the ones that you might here today.

  171. So why did Jesus need to go the shorter?

  172. The shorter Passage Through Samaria.

  173. Maybe it was partially because of the journey.

  174. Jesus didn't have time to waste that four days.

  175. Why waste the four days by going around, was it?

  176. Because he did not share the general, Jewish hatred for the

  177. Samaritans. Possibly, he certainly deals

  178. with that head on in the story of the Good Samaritan, but I'm

  179. convinced. The main reason that he wanted

  180. to spend those extra days. Save those extra days by going

  181. the shorter route through Samaria.

  182. Was because he wanted to begin some, that wouldn't take really

  183. take place till ax8 some 15 or so years later.

  184. He wanted to begin to turn Samaria upside down, and he

  185. wanted to start with this immoral woman who carried around

  186. a chip on her shoulder. Let's read verse five and six.

  187. So, we came to a city of Samaria, which is called sychar

  188. near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son.

  189. Joseph. Now Jacob's, Well, was there,

  190. Jesus, therefore being wearied from his journey sat thus, by

  191. the well, it was about the sixth hour.

  192. Again, now sychar was right on a line about halfway between

  193. Jerusalem and Galilee. Jesus had been traveling about a

  194. day and a half now so it was probably A noontime and he was

  195. worn out. He was wiped out, he was

  196. exhausted and so he stopped to rest at Jacob's.

  197. Well, now Jacob's, Well, was and still is quite a historical

  198. place at this time when Jesus stop there, it had been in

  199. existence for 1800 years. It's still in existence, in

  200. fact, you can still visit this same spot what now which is

  201. 2,000 years later almost 4,000 years.

  202. Der this well, was dug. Jaden McGarvey after visiting,

  203. the will. A hundred years ago, wrote

  204. Jacob's, Well is listen about 100 feet from Mount gerizim,

  205. which Rises high above it to the West.

  206. The whale is a perfect cylinder, seven and a half feet.

  207. In diameter wall with stones of good-sized smoothly, dress and

  208. nicely fitted together. An excellent piece of masonry.

  209. He says in 1839, it was found to be 75 feet deep the well but

  210. with only 10 to 12 feet of water, all visitors of more of a

  211. more recent date. Have found it dry and gradually

  212. filling up from the habit of throwing stones into it to hear

  213. the reverberation when they strike the bottom.

  214. I want to just stop here and make a point Jesus here.

  215. I believe was valuing good works.

  216. This well, had been here for 18 hundred years for 1800 years and

  217. now he stops and he's resting at the well and and satisfying his

  218. great thirst at the well, you know, there's really no telling

  219. how many people may benefit from the good works that you do.

  220. Certainly the Servants of Jacob that Doug that well 1800 years,

  221. before Jesus ended up. There had no idea that the

  222. Messiah some day would come and stop at that.

  223. Well, And quench their thirst right there.

  224. The Messiah himself, the Son of God, and you remember that your

  225. random acts of kindness your words of encouragement, your

  226. Good Works. May bless others that you may

  227. never even meet. We take a lot for granted.

  228. It's probably safe to assume that the Samaritan woman here.

  229. And the story is also thirsty, consider this, she had to walk

  230. out. This well, with a pot, a heavy

  231. pot and she had to carry at this time, a 70-foot long rope, just

  232. to get a little bit of water, no doubt.

  233. This would be part of what allows her to covet The Living

  234. Water. That Jesus is going to speak of

  235. in just a little while. Notice also that Jesus needed

  236. rest in 2nd Thessalonians 3 verse 10 through 15, the Bible

  237. teaches that the man who does not work.

  238. Work should not eat and that other Christians should not even

  239. associate with him. In first, Timothy 5, verse 8

  240. Paul says that this kind of man is worse than an Infidel worse

  241. than an unbeliever and while slothfulness and laziness is a

  242. serious sin, good and godly men and women have put themselves in

  243. a premature grave. Because they did not give their

  244. body their Temple, the Temple of the Holy Spirit, rather rest

  245. First Corinthians 6:19 and 20 teach that.

    1 Corinthians 6:19

  246. So Jesus stops here to rats and he stops here to satisfy his

  247. thirst, verse 7 through 9. A woman of Samaria came to draw

  248. water. Jesus said to her, give me a

  249. drink. For his disciples had gone away

  250. into the city to buy food. Then the woman of Samaria said

  251. to him, how is it that you being a Jew?

  252. Ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman.

  253. For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

  254. So DS is resting at the, well wise disciples have gone to town

  255. for food. Jesus asked her for a drink of

  256. water. Notice here, that Jesus spoke

  257. first. Jesus initiated this

  258. conversation. Sometimes we think that well as

  259. long as we just live a Christian, what Christian Life

  260. that that's all we have to do know, there are times when we

  261. need to initiate conversations. We don't wait for somebody else

  262. to talk to us. We initiate the contact.

  263. Jesus did teach in the synagogue and his public teaching was

  264. important, but Jesus was more than just a Sabbath morning.

  265. Teacher Jesus, just like Paul and the other Apostles and

  266. preachers and elders. And so on they taught publicly

  267. and from house to house, the church does not glorify God by

  268. adding to the New Testament pattern by embracing women

  269. preachers. First Corinthians Chapter 14

    1 Corinthians 14:34

  270. verse 34 and 35 of you believe the Bible.

  271. You believe what I'm saying? It's a shame for a woman.

  272. Women to speak in the church nor does the church honor God by

  273. neglecting to teach from house to house.

  274. We heard teachers and we who are preachers will be judged, more

  275. strictly James 3, verse 1 says. And so while in the United

    James 3:1

  276. States, the days of baptizing dozens during a gospel meeting

  277. have apparently passed. More than anytime.

  278. More than any generation in these United States.

  279. We must teach the lost as well as the faithful publicly and

  280. privately Jesus model that he did it right here.

  281. He took the time. I'm going to talk to this one

  282. woman. Yes, he talked to the multitudes

  283. on The Sermon, on the Mount but he's zeroed in from time to time

  284. on one particular individual and he initiated the conversation

  285. and he did that first of all by establishing a relationship a

  286. friendship. Once remember that, when we're

  287. working, Working to reach out and to save the lost.

  288. Well, a Samaritan woman was stunned.

  289. She was shocked, imagine that you were there.

  290. Imagine you were there watching. Imagine you were there.

  291. Listening somehow hidden behind some bushes, somewhere to

  292. experience this. You could see the facial

  293. expressions there, if Jesus clothing, didn't give it away

  294. his accent. Did she knew that this man was a

  295. Jew? Watches the story develops to

  296. see how her knowledge of and respect for Jesus grows.

  297. We find in verse 7. She speaks of him and not real

  298. positive. Way about him being a Jew by

  299. verse 11. She's saying sir when she speaks

  300. of him by verse 19, she speaks of him as a prophet.

  301. And then finally in verse 29 she's talking to him as the

  302. Christ, the Messiah. But first, she must have been

  303. thinking what a strange man and she says, in effect, Who do you

  304. think you are and what do you think you're doing?

  305. I think another element of Jesus wisdom here is seen in how well

  306. he was able to listen and how much he listened to this woman.

  307. If Jesus was going to limit this car conversation proportionally

  308. to who was right? And who knew what they were

  309. talking about. He wouldn't have let this woman

  310. get a word in edgewise. He just say not shush.

  311. You stop. And you listen to me and even

  312. though Jesus did initiate the conversation, we see Jesus

  313. listening Swift to hear James 1 verse 19 says, slow to speak,

    James 1:19

  314. Swift to hear. We see that.

  315. It's interesting to me. I took the time to go down and

  316. and break down the conversation from verse 7, through verse 20,

  317. And did you know that they both spoke exactly 114 words a

  318. completely balanced conversation.

  319. He was going to turn the conversation but he allowed her

  320. to talk. He allowed her to express

  321. herself. She says though, how is it that

  322. you being a Jew? Has to drink from me, a

  323. Samaritan woman. She was really scolding him.

  324. I believe for violating the conventional cultural etiquette,

  325. you shouldn't be doing this mr. I know who you are.

  326. You need to know who you are, but Jesus wasn't deterred.

  327. Sometimes we give up too easily. Jesus wasn't like that.

  328. He wasn't deterred by the awkwardness.

  329. By what was perhaps an insult or brush off.

  330. He loved the Samaritans. Just like he loved the Jews.

  331. He loved the women. Just like he loved the men.

  332. He loved the Harvest just like he loved the holy ones.

  333. People who don't understand the Bible or the time, sometimes

  334. slander, the New Testament, they slander, Jesus.

  335. And Paul saying that all, or maybe from time to time, one of

  336. them were against women. That's not the case.

  337. Jesus elevated the woman and he and he spoke with and treated

  338. women better much better than the men of that day.

  339. I think it's important for us to know that as we here.

  340. Some of the things that we hear out in the world Jesus honored

  341. and value the six Mary's, their names are preserved as being the

  342. ones that were there right to the end when some of the men

  343. couldn't be counted on Jesus mother.

  344. Mary Magdalene. Mary, the wife of clopas, Mary

  345. and Martha, Joanna, Susanna solo me Dorcas Jesus, highly

  346. esteemed. These Godly women.

  347. Without putting them in the Pulpit like some think they have

  348. to do or without elevating them to a place of church leadership.

  349. The eldership, we can still do what Jesus did graciously today,

  350. and honor Godly women just like Jesus did without violating the

  351. New Testament teaching. We see the same a, the Apostle

  352. Paul that we saw in Jesus, he singles out Phoebe, and Romans

  353. 16, not saying that she's some kind of a church.

  354. Vishal but he elevates her as a Godly woman.

  355. He singles her out just like he does Priscilla and try Fina and

  356. try fossa persis Rufus mother Lois Eunice and he did this and

  357. Jesus did this in a day when Jewish men often lived in

  358. harmony with the rabbis who taught that worm should not talk

  359. with a woman on the street, not even with his own wife and

  360. certainly not somebody else's wife because of the gossip of

  361. men. It was forbidden to give a

  362. woman, any greeting here. Jesus is.

  363. Talking not just to a woman but to a Samaritan woman.

  364. In fact, some of the synagogue's back in that day segregated, the

  365. women they had to sit behind a veil, some rabbis thought and

  366. taught that women should not even hear the law.

  367. Women were treated little better than a slave but not Jesus, and

  368. not the Apostle Paul, and not the New Testaments in meekness

  369. and humility Jesus continually condescended From the throne

  370. room of Heaven to a Manger in Bethlehem from the presence of

  371. the Father, the Holy Spirit, and the angels to the lepers

  372. Hypocrites, and the harness. Oh, what?

  373. Amazing savior. We have, he condescended down to

  374. me. And to you sometimes we thank

  375. well. We've got ourselves cleaned up.

  376. We're United States, we're Americans, and we know a lot,

  377. and we've seen a lot and we've done a lot, and we've got a lot.

  378. We feel pretty good about ourselves, but We're just

  379. Sinners. Those of us who have obeyed, the

  380. gospel or just Sinners. Who have been saved by the grace

  381. of God, because we've obeyed our Lord.

  382. He condescends to me. Oh, to be more like him to, not

  383. think that I'm better than any man or any other woman on the

  384. earth to treat them with as much respect every one of them.

  385. Has anybody else that I would that's the way Jesus is.

  386. We need to be more like that brothers and sisters.

  387. That's the way Jesus was and that's why he's going to get

  388. this woman and that's why he had such a tremendous effect and

  389. that's why Christianity has spread like it has verse 10,

  390. Jesus answered and said to her, if you knew the gift of God and

  391. who it is, who say C says to you give me a drink, you would have

  392. asked him and he would have given you living water.

  393. Jesus, did not let her impertinent criticism.

  394. Throw him off trap. Living Water I've got for you.

  395. Do you know who this is? How is Jesus able to keep his

  396. cool and not get distracted or disturbed by how she behaved and

  397. how she responded. I believe it was because he

  398. remained focused on her welfare and not on her words, he wasn't

  399. focused on his own Pride, or his own ego, he was focused on her.

  400. I've got to lead this woman to the father.

  401. I've got to bring her to God. He wasn't concerned about what

  402. what type of A foolish words. She might say he lost himself

  403. just about where we so many times.

  404. Have we lost our cool? Well, she didn't have a clue

  405. about this living water, but now with his patient persistence, he

  406. had her curious and her curiosity.

  407. Next led her to challenge his ability and his identity will

  408. get to that in just a minute. Let me quote from Bruce Milne

  409. here, he in his Harry gives us another thing for us to remember

  410. when it comes to evangelism, he's emphasizing Jesus

  411. compassion and sensitivity. I'm quoting through the entire

  412. conversation. Jesus deals with her as a person

  413. in her own right with her with their own unique history and

  414. special longings. She emerges in the account as a

  415. character with personal dignity because Jesus treats her as such

  416. simply put Jesus loved her. Although we don't read the

  417. words, I love You' in the text. She could see it.

  418. And was prepared to breach, age-old conventions to reach her

  419. our failures and evangelism are so often failures in love.

  420. Nothing is so guaranteed to draw others to share our living

  421. water. That an awareness that we

  422. genuinely care about them. People want to know that we care

  423. before they care about what we know.

  424. Remember that Down to verse 11 and 12 the woman said to him,

  425. sir, you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep.

  426. Where then do you get that living water?

  427. Are you greater than our father? Jacob who gave us the well, and

  428. drank it from it himself as well as his sons and his livestock Is

  429. Americans would just like the Jews.

  430. They're always talking about their their Heritage you greater

  431. than Jacob. They had that same common

  432. Heritage. Are you greater than Moses?

  433. Yes, greater than alive. Yes, David.

  434. Yes. That's what she was asking.

  435. Really who do you think you are? And now Jesus turned the

  436. conversation from the carnal to the spiritual, but she still

  437. struggling to catch on to connect all the dots.

  438. What is he saying? What does he mean?

  439. Verse 13 and 14? Jesus answered and said to her.

  440. Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again.

  441. But whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never

  442. thirst. But the water that I shall give

  443. him will become in him, a fountain of water springing.

  444. Springing up into everlasting life.

  445. Now Jesus is moved from instructing, the Samaritan woman

  446. to really teaching all of us. He's talking to every last

  447. person here today, this is very similar to his teaching, in John

    John 6:35

  448. 6, verse 35. And he says, I am the bread of

  449. life, he who comes to me, shall never hunger.

  450. And he, who believes in me, shall never.

  451. Thirst, blessed are they those who hunger and thirst, after

  452. righteousness, for they shall be filled.

  453. It's talking to us. For thirsting, for the right

  454. thing we have the right kind of hunger will be satisfied.

  455. He's also saying that, nothing worldly, nothing carnal, nothing

  456. physical, can satisfy us the law, the besides just in the

  457. short run, Nothing besides genuinely serving, God can bring

  458. genuine peace, joy and contentment as Jesus puts it in

  459. John 15 only if we abide in Christ and he and us, can we

  460. maintain the joy of Salvation is hika back in the Old Testament

  461. had hinder what Jesus was talking about right here in

  462. Ezekiel 36:26. And 27, I will give you a new

    Ezekiel 36:26

  463. heart and put a new spirit within you.

  464. I will take the Heart of Stone out of your flesh and give you a

  465. heart of Flesh. I will put my spirit within you

  466. and will cause you to walk in my statutes and you will keep my

  467. judgments. And do them.

  468. Verse 15. The woman said to him, sir, give

  469. me this water that I may not thirst nor come here to draw,

  470. she's tied to making this trip. Give me this.

  471. I don't know what you're talking about.

  472. Where is this water? What do you mean?

  473. Give it to me? I'm ready.

  474. She was just like the crowd in John 6.

  475. Who said Evermore? Give us this bread.

  476. She doesn't fully understand what Jesus is talking about.

  477. But she does acknowledge at least that maybe this man does

  478. have the power to By this miraculous water he's talking

  479. about now. Jesus goes from changing it to a

  480. spiritual conversation, to changing it to her.

  481. He's targeting her. He's targeting the woman.

  482. Her situation verse 16 through 19.

  483. Jesus said to her, go call your husband.

  484. And come here. The woman answered and said, I

  485. have no husband. Jesus said to her, you have well

  486. said, I have no husband for you have had five husbands and the

  487. The one that you have now is not your husband in that you spoke

  488. truly the woman said to him, sir, I perceive that you are a

  489. prophet. Now, it's possible that this

  490. woman may have been widowed five times that all five of her

  491. husband's had died but that's not very likely.

  492. Is it even given the benefit of the doubt on her five marriages?

  493. There is still no justifying her living with the man that she's

  494. now with, and Jesus knows it. And she knows it.

  495. He wants her to take a good look in the mirror to see herself for

  496. who she is. And that she to needs a savior.

  497. Oh, she can boast about being descendants of Jacob, but she's

  498. a sinner and she's lost and she needs somebody and he is that

  499. somebody Well, now she has a Bible question and maybe this is

  500. maybe it's because she's a little bit overwhelmed with how

  501. all of a sudden this has gone from a talk about getting a

  502. drink of water till where she's on the spot, maybe she's wanting

  503. to kind of deflect the discussion.

  504. But she has a worship question for the one that she's now

  505. acknowledged as a prophet. Let's look at verse 20.

  506. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain.

  507. What's neat about? This is now we know that where

  508. she's standing there hundred feet away from Mountain reason.

  509. She's pointing at that mountain. That's so interesting to me.

  510. She says verse 20 our fathers worshiped on this mountain and

  511. you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to

  512. worship. She kind of wants to have a

  513. religious debate going here. Oh, Jesus is going to disarm the

  514. woman. He's treated her with respect as

  515. a woman as a Samaritan as a sinner but now it's time for her

  516. to drop her prejudice against the Jews and against the truth

  517. and listen. Lovely.

  518. And so he sets the record straight in verse 21 and 22 and

  519. gives her a preview to the kingdom.

  520. Jesus said, to her woman, believe me the hour is coming.

  521. When you will neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem,

  522. worship the father, you worship, what you do?

  523. Not know. We know what we worship for

  524. salvation of the Jews of the Jews.

  525. Let me just say this controversy once and for all you Samaritan

  526. has been wrong. All these years and where you're

  527. worshipping. It's wrong.

  528. It's no good. God doesn't accept it.

  529. You're wasting your time, you're wasting your energy.

  530. That's rather direct. And sometimes people don't like

  531. to hear that. Their worship is not found in

  532. the Bible. The Jesus is not defend, Diaz

  533. are not support, and God will not accept their worship.

  534. But sometimes when we love someone, we've got to let them

  535. know when we've established as Jesus has done a relationship.

  536. And we've demonstrated a genuine concern for them, and we've

  537. talked respectfully them, Sometimes we have to tell them.

  538. The way you're worshipping, it's not found in the Bible, it's not

  539. there. And if you don't change, you're

  540. going to be in trouble because God doesn't accept that worship,

  541. verse 23. And now now he's really honing

  542. in and he's going to come on real strong on this topic of

  543. worship. Yes, it does matter, it does

  544. matter, it did matter back then where you worship, but the hour

  545. is coming and now is talking about us when the true

  546. worshipers will worship the father in spirit.

  547. And in truth, for the father is seeking such such to worship

  548. Him. People don't think that they

  549. need such thing as this exist true worship.

  550. True worship. You mean that there is a kind of

  551. worship that is not true. That's exactly what Jesus is

  552. telling her. And that's exactly what Jesus is

  553. telling us today. There is true, worship, and

  554. every other kind of worship is false worship.

  555. Doesn't matter how brilliant the man was who came up with it

  556. doesn't matter how it. Well this is awful convenience

  557. doesn't matter how sanitary it maybe if it's not found in the

  558. Bible it's not true worship. True worshipers worship in

  559. truth. Jesus already told her the fact

  560. that the Jews were the true worshippers.

  561. The Samaritans, were the false worshippers didn't matter how

  562. sincere they were and what they were doing.

  563. Of course, that's the prevalent way.

  564. It is today, the philosophy in Christianity.

  565. All worship is acceptable, but Jesus makes it clear that that's

  566. not it. Listen, if we can't find our

  567. practice in the New Testament, we're kidding ourselves.

  568. If we think that God, accepts our worship, can you imagine

  569. this Samaritan woman? Her mother and her father, her

  570. grandmother and her Grandpa all the way back generation after

  571. generation. They been worshipping this way.

  572. He's just done to her what he did to Nicodemus in the previous

  573. chapter said you're going to set all that aside.

  574. You're going to have to do my will, you're going to have to

  575. worship, just like, I tell you just write in the right place.

  576. Now today it's not the right place today.

  577. The Lord is not concerned about the longitude and the latitude

  578. of all location where we worship, We don't have to have

  579. lit Worship in a particular City.

  580. I could date back there in Jerusalem as opposed to mount

  581. good reason. But there are particular, is

  582. that God makes clear when he talks about true worship.

  583. There are some specifics, the next verse.

  584. What does he say? In verse 24, God is a spirit and

  585. they that worship Him must worship him.

  586. That's not a condition. That's not a suggestion.

  587. That is an absolute must worship Him in spirit.

  588. And in truth, New Testament worship involves the teaching

  589. and the meditation upon the apostles Doctrine, the singing

  590. of Psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs praying to God through his

  591. son. Jesus Christ, involves the

  592. observance of the Lord's Supper, the contribution, for the spread

  593. of the gospel, and the care of meaty Saints.

  594. We, if we had time, we talk more about the specifics on each of

  595. these. And as we noticed earlier than

  596. me, there is a pattern, there is a pattern and we were to abide

  597. in that pattern. We're not to add to or take away

  598. from it. Now some people don't, they look

  599. at their little thing and which they can't find in the Bible.

  600. It ain't there. But they were you know, it's not

  601. that big of a deal. We just do this little thing

  602. here and that's the, we everything else.

  603. We pretty much keep listen. You start making one change.

  604. You have lost every last, right? To complain about all the things

  605. that have been the flood of innovations that have come into

  606. religion. You've Lost Your Right.

  607. Look what happens when you abandon abandon the pattern?

  608. This is what happens listen to all the that is just a short

  609. list of some of the things that have come along since the New

  610. Testament was established auricular confession.

  611. The baptism of images, the baptizing of bells, the

  612. baptizing of infant's, baptism for the dead, the burning of a

  613. Incense the canonization of saints, celibacy of the clergy

  614. communion under one kind, elevation of the host extreme

  615. munchkin function, invocation of the Saints, the lighting of

  616. blessed lamps and candles, Lenten, fast and ceremonies

  617. orders of monks and nuns societies of Jesus, Purgatory,

  618. prayers for those in purgatory. Pascal candles Priestly, robes

  619. Investments. Holy paraphernalia.

  620. Penance. Redemption of penances.

  621. Pouring for baptism. Sprinkling.

  622. For baptism, the rosary. The separation of Clergy and

  623. laity, the doctrine of transubstantiation constant

  624. Association, individual cups, the sprinkling of holy water,

  625. the stored up Merit of dead Saints.

  626. The use of instrumental music, women preachers, and on, and on

  627. the list goes, once you start. Don't you ever complain about

  628. anything else than anybody else is adding?

  629. But the best thing is never to start.

  630. Just stick with what the Bible has.

  631. Just do it the way Jesus said it down.

  632. And if you've gotten on the wrong road and you've taken yup,

  633. one of these practices that Jesus didn't set up, you need to

  634. let it go. That's what we're going to show

  635. in just a minute. That's that maybe your water

  636. pots. Well, let's read on verse 25,

  637. the woman said to him, I know that the Messiah is coming, who

  638. is called Christ. When he comes, he will tell us

  639. all things. Jesus said to her, I who speak

  640. to you. and he, Verse 27 at this point his disciples came and

  641. they marveled that he talked with a woman yet.

  642. No one said what do you seek or why are you talking with her?

  643. The woman, then left her waterpot went her way into the

  644. City and said to them and said to the men come, see a man who

  645. told me all things that I ever did, could this be the Christ?

  646. Then they went out of the city and came to him.

  647. She left her waterpot when she headed when she was headed to

  648. the. Well, the most important thing

  649. in the world to her was her water pot.

  650. Funny how it is. Sometimes we get so focused in

  651. on our own little water pots that we forget what really

  652. matters we get. So caught up in the world and

  653. worldly things. We need to leave our water pot.

  654. What are some of the water pots that we have?

  655. What are some of the water pots that perhaps you have, there's

  656. the water pot of self-will. The water pot of self-pity,

  657. there's a water pot of family over faithfulness.

  658. There's the water part of a carnal mind.

  659. There's the water pot of fear, the water pot of Pride, I don't

  660. know what your water pot is today, but if you're not living

  661. right, you need to think about what is it?

  662. What is the water pot that I need to leave behind?

  663. So I know without any doubt that I'm pleased, the Lord.

  664. And how I'm living and how I'm worshipping verse 31, through

  665. 38, in the meantime, his disciples urged him saying Rabbi

  666. eat, but he said to them, I have food to eat up, which you do not

  667. know. Therefore the disciples said to

  668. one another has anyone brought him anything to eat?

  669. Jesus said to them. My food is to do.

  670. The will of him who sent me and to finish his work.

  671. Do you not say there are still four months and then comes the

  672. Harvest. Behold.

  673. I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields for, they

  674. are already white for Harvest. And he, who reaps receives wages

  675. and gathers fruit for eternal life that both he who sews and

  676. he who reaps may Rejoice together.

  677. For, in this, the saying, is true, one sows.

  678. And another reaps I sent you to reap that for which you have not

  679. labored others have labored and you have entered into their

  680. labors verse 39, and many of the Samaritans of that City believed

  681. in him because of the word of the woman who testified, he told

  682. me all that I ever did. So when the Aaron's had come to

  683. him, they urged him to stay with them.

  684. And he stayed there, two days, and many more believed, because

  685. of his own word, then they said to the woman.

  686. Now we believe not because of what you said for, we ourselves

  687. have heard him and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the

  688. savior of the world, look at all the good that's done from this

  689. one private Bible study so to speak that Jesus has with this

  690. Samaritan woman who's lived an immoral life.

  691. He's turned Her life around and he's turned the city around and

  692. they're going to be ready. Oh yes.

  693. They will be ready in Acts chapter 8.

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  694. When Philip Comes To Town. We talked about a lot today.

  695. We talked about how Jesus valued good works.

  696. We talked about how the key was he initiated this conversation.

  697. He elevated the woman and he taught that there is such a

  698. thing as true worship, which automatically teaches us.

  699. There's a thing, such a thing as false worship.
