  1. We've gathered this afternoon to continue our service, unto the

  2. gracious God of heaven and him who loved us.

  3. And I, for us, we're going to talk about something maybe a

  4. little bit different about respect to persons.

  5. And you say well why are you preaching about that?

  6. Well it happens and the Bible recognize it was going to happen

  7. and he has given us instructions concerning this.

  8. So we're going to study that for a few moments.

  9. Let's read James. The second chapter one through

  10. four My brethren have not the Faith of Our Lord.

  11. Jesus Christ. The lord of Glory with respect

  12. of persons for if they're coming to your assembly, a man with a

  13. gold ring in good apparel and they're coming.

  14. Also a poor man and vile raiment and he have respect unto him

  15. that where the gate clothing and saith unto him.

  16. Set thou here in a good place and say to the poor Stands out

  17. there or sit here under my footstool.

  18. Are you not then partial in your cells and are become judges of

  19. evil thoughts? Not aware of this being

  20. happening in our Brotherhood. So very much but it happened

  21. back there in New Testament times and it can still happen

  22. today Among Us. So what are we?

  23. We going to do about it, you know, God's religion must

  24. manifest itself in outward activities just as God,

  25. manifested himself to Man by various activities.

  26. Now there's a lot that we don't know about God, but hasn't he

  27. revealed a lot about himself? To Marvel man.

  28. And he has showed us the way to heaven.

  29. And so we love him. We respect him and we serve him

  30. because he has manifested himself to Man by various

  31. activities. And he suspect expects us to

  32. manifest ourselves to him by various Here it is as well.

  33. So God, chose these outward activities that he wanted band

  34. to do. We didn't choose them.

  35. We didn't think them up in our own minds, he chose these things

  36. for man to do and when we do those things, God has chosen to

  37. do then we're glorifying his name.

  38. So there are some positive things and some negative things.

  39. God wanted man to Understand and do.

  40. And I think these things are so great in a world where nearly

  41. everybody is saying, we're not saved by works.

  42. And yet, God chose that very planned to manifest ourselves to

  43. him these verses tells us so and some of these things they are.

  44. Yes, things things, positive, things he want us to do but

  45. there's a lot of no things. That he doesn't want us to do

  46. and so we glorify him but doing the yeses and not doing the

  47. nose. So He started out this series of

  48. verses, by saying my brethren. Now, this is a statement of

  49. equality. This is a statement about our

  50. being one and equal to each other.

  51. In the church. We are brothers and sisters

  52. equal to each other. One is not above the other.

  53. So God, Wants us to remember that.

  54. Now, he said, he started out in this verse, my brethren, have

  55. not the faith. Now, religion was introduced to

  56. us in the preceding chapter, what pure religion and undefiled

  57. religion is so, we understand for from some things that were

  58. said this morning that, that word religion, Means to tie us

  59. back to God. That's a reason.

  60. Religion, is, is given to us in article.

  61. Came up out in our local paper up at Yuba City, that was wrong

  62. like so much other stuff in it is wrong.

  63. They haven't gotten where they can do the weather real good.

  64. They haven't gotten where they can list the sports activities

  65. that I I like like it should be but now the end they did, they

  66. said that religion is what people are shying away from.

  67. That's a terrible thing to say. Because God's religion, you

  68. remember, we said this morning, it's made up of that compound

  69. word, Ray, which means again Livio, which means to tie, so

  70. religion is what ties us back to God.

  71. Why do you think God gave us the New Testament?

  72. Why do you think he gave us the word of God?

  73. Because he wants man tied back with him because say sin

  74. separates Us from God, it unties us.

  75. And so now the in God wanted to give man, something that would

  76. bring us back to him and and really honor his name.

  77. And sometimes religion is called the faith.

  78. See that term up there. The faith is another name for

  79. that same religion. The gospel is another name.

  80. It is called the faith because it produces faith and that's so

  81. essential for us to remember. I know that I remember a lady

  82. that was continually coming back to church and making a

  83. confession fault, backsliding, come back to church backslide.

  84. And and so I didn't understand what was wrong.

  85. Why is she doing that? What do you see?

  86. It's time. Some catastrophe would happen in

  87. her family are among her friends.

  88. For example, I remember one time she was out of Duty and one of

  89. her friends was killed in an auto asset.

  90. So here she came and made a confession.

  91. Well that was all right for her to make a confession.

  92. She It to make one. But here's the thing.

  93. Her faith that caused her to come back to church was because

  94. some catastrophe happened. And where does faith come fi?

  95. The from faith comes from hearing the word of God.

  96. If you, if your faith did not come from hearing God's word, it

  97. will do nothing for salvation for you it, that faith has to

  98. come from God's work. Well, so, he calls the gospel,

  99. the faith because it produces the right kind of Faith.

  100. The saving faith for us. Us.

  101. So if you want saving Faith, then you've got to get it from

  102. God's word. And that's the way it is, you

  103. know, Jesus lived a poor life while he was here on Earth.

  104. But now he is Lord Of Glory, in a highly exalted position, he is

  105. the one we must respect now. And not by those who have wealth

  106. here, in life. We might, we must respect the

  107. Lord Of Glory because when he came to this earth, The people

  108. said this can't be the Messiah, this can't be the Christ because

  109. he's not coming here. Riding a great white, charger

  110. and leading up, vast Army to drive the Romans out of our

  111. nation. He's not doing all that.

  112. He was born in the manger. He wasn't born in a palace.

  113. And they just didn't understand Jesus in that lowly humble

  114. position. Just did not understand it.

  115. And so, he's the one that we must respect now, and not those

  116. who seem exalted, but wealth here on this earth.

  117. Now, In the 2nd through the 4th verse is of James to.

  118. He said for if they're coming to your assembly, a man with a gold

  119. ring and goodly apparel and they're also and they're coming.

  120. Also a poor man in Vile Rima and he have respect to him that

  121. we're at the gay clothing and saying to him set the here in a

  122. good place and say to the poor stands out of there.

  123. Sit here under my footstool, are you not then partial in

  124. yourselves and are become judges of evil thoughts?

  125. See how that works out in that particular place the difference

  126. between a rich man and the poor man can't get us in trouble if

  127. we don't watch out if we don't have the proper attitude toward

  128. all that. So you are Are impressed with a

  129. rich man's clothing and so you honor him highly.

  130. That's what they were doing back there in New Testament times.

  131. That's what people still do today.

  132. And this is something that I think is getting a parent in

  133. some areas. So God is watching us and is

  134. very interested in how much respect you show to each other.

  135. Very interested in that. And so I hope that we all have

  136. the right attitude toward this. Now you can do this by the

  137. seating arrangement as we found out in Africa.

  138. We went over there and live, 45 years old together and I was

  139. very surprised to see that when they came Into the assembly,

  140. they would March in and the women would sit on this side

  141. over here and then it said, on that side over there.

  142. Well, this is something that the United Kingdom of Great, Britain

  143. had talked to them but you know, in fact they told me one, the

  144. church leaders told me he said you can't stand that you can't

  145. set by a woman who worship God. That was their attitude toward

  146. all that. So they separate the men from

  147. the women, but that's not the worst thing that they were doing

  148. as far as I was concerned because they had a ring of

  149. chairs up here behind the pulpit there.

  150. And the bigger you were in their sight, the more important you

  151. were To them. You got to set up here and I've

  152. seen that scripture literally, fulfil, that some man will take

  153. one of these seats up here. And, and then a more important

  154. man would come into them. And they tell that, man, you get

  155. up and you go sit back there. See now, That wasn't that was a

  156. hard habit to break in Africa very difficult because they like

  157. that honor. So you and they like to bestow

  158. Honor on somebody that they really like we can't do that.

  159. We can't do that and God would rather see us.

  160. Take poor and lowly man in the eyes of the world and said Him

  161. right up in on front seat or if he so desired, but they, it took

  162. them a long time. And some of them have not yet

  163. caught that. And because we're all equal,

  164. we're all Brothers and Sisters in Christ and it was nice to

  165. have a chair to sit in. I'll have to admit that because

  166. what they had for beaches Was just some mud that was built up

  167. and they let it Harden and that was the beaches of that.

  168. State of no backs to lean up against or anything like that.

  169. Didn't make any difference. We were there to worship God and

  170. to honor him and, and worship god with our Brothers and

  171. Sisters in Christ. So that was a very difficult.

  172. Old habit that the British Top them to break today.

  173. So it is said that the most coveted seating place in the

  174. synagogue was at the end of the building facing Jerusalem and by

  175. the arc where the sacred Scrolls were kept.

  176. That was the most coveted seating place and well.

  177. People, some people in the world who have a worldly attitude and

  178. a nun spiritual attitude. That's the seat that they would

  179. want. That's the seat that they would

  180. have. We can't do that.

  181. We can't exalt people. Now, I'll admit that when I

  182. choose a seat in the assembly, I like for it to be there

  183. available for me when I get to church, but if somebody else is

  184. sitting in it that's fine and dandy to, that's All right,

  185. because we're brothers and sisters in Christ.

  186. See that's, he doesn't want us to have that respect of persons

  187. like that. Now to the poor, they would say,

  188. stand are set where I place my feet.

  189. Don't get this good chair. You don't get this best seat.

  190. See, how would you like to worship, God, like that today?

  191. You know, we can't do that. And so now it would be shameful

  192. It would be shameful to dress in an ostentatious garment, and

  193. prayed a parade up and down the aisle.

  194. So, the risk could see you and perhaps, envy, you I do lady.

  195. Sheesh. Is not not very well off.

  196. Physically are mentally either one, but if she's got a new

  197. dress, she likes to set up on the front seat and she likes to

  198. Go get a drink of water parade up and down, I'll all I'm

  199. preaching and so people could see her.

  200. See what kind of attitude is that?

  201. You think the Lord is pleased with something like that?

  202. He's not pleased and so that is what can happen.

  203. So he said, are you not partial The idea is in James is time,

  204. they were vacillating between what the Lord taught and what

  205. they were naturally inclined to do.

  206. See, I know that in our Brotherhood, instead of building

  207. a new building, we have purchased some that the

  208. denominations were abandoning And you know, I heard one of

  209. them say that we're selling this building because we're almost a

  210. shame to invite our friends to this place.

  211. See What an attitude? What a way to look at things.

  212. Listen, we're brothers and sisters in Christ and we walk to

  213. live. Like we are in two years so they

  214. had the wrong motives as indicated by the turn.

  215. Evil thoughts, see, are you not partial?

  216. And aren't you having evil thoughts?

  217. When you make distinctions like this?

  218. Now. Let's go home.

  219. You know, thoughts have a way of expressing themselves in outward

  220. actions. That's just the way they are.

  221. So we must guard our thoughts because the scriptures in the

  222. Old Testament teaches us as he thinketh in his heart.

  223. So is he? So you can tell what people are

  224. thinking in their heart of the way they act in this in James.

  225. The second chapter verse 5, he wrote Harkin my beloved Brethren

  226. hath. Not God.

  227. Chosen the poor of this world rich in faith and Heirs of the

  228. Kingdom, which he has promised to them.

  229. That love him. Well, see, that's the type that

  230. God himself chose that's the way it was.

  231. Jesus Christ came to the work that into this world where he

  232. was born and work that he learned to do and in all of that

  233. when I was getting this lesson up, when animals watching TV,

  234. and there was an ad on there. Somebody won the Super Bowl last

  235. year. They had a ring in there showing

  236. it off. No, Super Bowl ringing, they had

  237. wanted. But Joe Montana was sitting over

  238. there had five of them on his finger.

  239. So that made him a whole lot bigger than this one over here

  240. who had just gotten. There's well, that's the way

  241. some people are out here in this world, but not in the Lord's

  242. church, not in the Lord's church at all.

  243. So this word hearken that used is imperative.

  244. In the Greek so far, as cases concerned imperative is not

  245. optional. See You can't lll do this or

  246. I'll not do this. It's imperative Harkin.

  247. So, what must we do? It is essential for them.

  248. And they were to listen carefully.

  249. That's the way it is with us today.

  250. You see when he said Harkin in him and it's in the imperative,

  251. then that means it is essential for us to do that in this day

  252. and time. Equality is one of the essential

  253. parts of Christianity and they buy their thoughts and practices

  254. were in danger of violating this.

  255. Important principle. So God has chosen the poor who

  256. are rich in faith. Material riches matters not with

  257. God while he owns everything start off with you.

  258. And and they're not something that should be that important to

  259. us when we are faced with choices like this, let's not let

  260. matters like that. Be the governing thing that we

  261. have. I want to tell you that poor man

  262. can inherit the kingdom of God, as well as the rich.

  263. Can do that. So, the important thing is, How

  264. the poor and the rich handle their riches and the attitude

  265. that they have. Now, you might not have very

  266. much but, that can keep you out of Heaven, if you got the wrong

  267. attitude toward it, See, and the rich.

  268. If they got the wrong attitude toward their riches that can

  269. keep them out of Heaven. To, it doesn't make any

  270. difference to them James the second chapter verses 6 and 7.

  271. He says but ye have despised the poor do not rich men oppress you

  272. and draw you before the Judgment seats.

  273. Do not they blaspheme that worthy Name by the which year

  274. called Well, that was happening back there.

  275. And I think people Kind of look at the church of Christ sort of

  276. like that in many many times. And in many respects, because

  277. like I heard a lady, say she asked one of our Brethren had a

  278. funeral, we were attending She said are you still going to that

  279. little Old Church Christ? And this brother said, well yes

  280. we sure are what a Pity she had, that's what you said.

  281. What up? He well down.

  282. You see, she had respect to persons, she had the wrong

  283. attitude. And this little Church of Christ

  284. she needed it. She needed to be a member of it

  285. and she needed to change her attitude.

  286. That was the thing about all of that.

  287. By their actions, they had despised the poor that God had

  288. chosen. And despised means they had

  289. Dishonored and insulted them. They were in opposition to God

  290. by showing partiality. Why would we want to be like

  291. that? Endangering our spiritual life?

  292. Spiritual inheritance for things like that.

  293. The rich had a press. These very people and brought

  294. them before the synagogue. The Judgment seat yet, they seem

  295. partial to them by showing them partiality.

  296. You remember that that important seat in the synagogue, it was up

  297. there before the, the Scrolls that had the word of God written

  298. on that. And it was facing Jerusalem and

  299. all that. All they like that seat.

  300. And they would make a man get up out of it.

  301. If one, more honorable came and he had to go sit someplace else

  302. and they had a pressed, the Christians in various ways.

  303. After the church, got it start. But still, they wanted to show

  304. the rich if they came in. Oh, you have this best seat now.

  305. This was something that was really damaging to their

  306. spirituality and don't they blaspheme that means to speak

  307. evil against or to revile. The rich had done this against

  308. the name of Christ and yet they were wanting to really get them.

  309. The very best best seat in the house if they would even come

  310. but when the Jews saw the multitudes they were filled with

  311. envy and speak against those things which were spoken by Paul

  312. contradicting and blaspheming yet the church members were

  313. showing partiality to them. Why Christian was the name A

  314. follower of Christ is what is what that means.

  315. And James 8 said, if you fulfill the Royal law, according to the

  316. scripture Thou shalt love thy Neighbour as thyself.

  317. You do well, a hard lesson for them to learn the Royal law.

  318. Is Lord Jesus. Our King gave, even though it is

  319. also found in the Old Testament itself.

  320. Now it In the present tense, indicating this Royal law must

  321. be kept at all times wasn't optional, it wasn't something

  322. you could do part of the time and then do something else.

  323. The rest of the time in the 9th and 10th versus he says, but if

  324. you have respect to persons, you commit sin and are convinced of

  325. the law as transgressors for whosoever shall keep the whole

  326. law. And yet offend in one point, he

  327. is guilty of all All a transgressor is one.

  328. Who misses the mark, he steps beyond the lot of the line that

  329. God has drawn. They therefore sinned when they

  330. Step Beyond The Royal law, they were guilty of doing this to

  331. other laws of Christ as well. So learn to abide with all

  332. within all of the laws of Christ.

  333. I'll bring the listen to a close now.

  334. You know Jesus pleads with us and his loving way, he died was

  335. buried. And then he rose again as this

  336. picture, depicts, and he arose with healing in his wings.

  337. He arose with salvation For mankind. it had been offered it

  338. had been received but justice but God and now then Jesus said

  339. come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will

  340. give you rest. Listen.

  341. Don't Let Jesus Leave Your Heart by showing respect of persons of

  342. any human being here on this Earth.

  343. It'll send you to hell. See, it'll do that.

  344. If you're not a member of the Church of Christ and you'd like

  345. to obey the gospel. Why don't you do that?

  346. As we sing this song, You Believe, don't you?

  347. Now, repent of your sins, confess your faith in Jesus

  348. Christ as the Son of God and be baptized.

  349. And if you're an erring child of God, Don't stay away from the

  350. shepherd and Bishop of your soul.
