  1. I can't dive into a topic. Very deep or build a thought for

  2. very long when our sermons are going to be 10 or 15 minutes

  3. long. But I want to just talk about a

  4. subject that is often discussed in the world and that is are you

  5. spiritual religious or both? Maybe you've heard people say

  6. this. I have in my life where somebody

  7. might say, I'm not religious, I'm just spiritual.

  8. Well, the question is, is it possible according to the word

  9. of God to be spiritual and not be religious?

  10. Are these Concepts found in the word of God.

  11. And what does all that mean? Well, first of all the mindset

  12. basically that says, I'm spiritual, I'm not religious.

  13. What people are saying, is this, everything that is relating to

  14. religious practice, or organized religion would be considered

  15. religious and In everything that is associated with the mind or

  16. the attitude or the behavior is dealing with the spiritual.

  17. So here's the mindset. As long as I am preparing my

  18. mind and my mind is right on the inside.

  19. I don't have to be part of any religious organization at all.

  20. I don't have to be a part of organized religion.

  21. Maybe you've also heard this where somebody might say, I

  22. believe in God. I'm a Believer in God but I

  23. don't believe in any kind of organized religion.

  24. Well, here's the point that I want to make.

  25. We want to notice, is it possible truly to be spiritual

  26. and not religious? Well, first of all, I want to

  27. ask two questions. Is this a distinction that ought

  28. to be made? Should we be making a

  29. distinction between spiritual and religious?

  30. And secondly is God. Happy with such a distinction?

  31. Well, first of all, let's talk about the definition of

  32. spiritual according to the American Heritage dictionary and

  33. there are four different definitions interesting.

  34. I thought especially number for just a minute but here is how

  35. the dictionary defined spiritual Relating to consisting of or

  36. having the nature of spirit. It is something not tangible or

  37. material second definition. It is concerned with or that,

  38. which is affecting the soul. Number three, it is from or

  39. relating to God. But then we get into number 4,

  40. and it says belonging to a church or religion.

  41. It is that which is sacred You know what's interesting about

  42. this sometimes spiritual and the definition of spiritual and

  43. religious are interchangeable. In fact, this is the definition

  44. of what it means to be religious, you belong to a body,

  45. you belong to a religious organization.

  46. Now it's also the same definition, definition number

  47. four, for the word, spiritual they run hand-in-hand.

  48. So I think that there are similarities and for Good

  49. reason. One scholar said it this way, he

  50. said the reason that they're used interchangeably and there

  51. are similarities is because there are some things that are

  52. spiritual that are religious and things that are religious and

  53. also spiritual we're going to get more into that in just a

  54. minute. So those that set up a contrast

  55. between spiritual and religious have a special definition for

  56. each Here's the special definition for Spiritual.

  57. They mean, specifically, religious Behavior relating to

  58. the mind like meditation. Like prayer like devotion.

  59. Let me ask you this. If meditation bad?

  60. No, the Bible says meditate on these things meditation is

  61. wonderful. If you're having a problem with

  62. your thinking in your mindset, you have to rid yourself of all

  63. the negative stuff. How do you do it by focusing on,

  64. or meditating on that? Which is good, that which is,

  65. lovely, and on, and so on, and so forth of good report.

  66. And when the Bible says think, on these things, it means

  67. meditate. So, meditates a great thing,

  68. What about this prayer prayer is part of our life.

  69. It is everything that we do. And by the way, if the only time

  70. you pray is, when you pray for your food or you pray at night,

  71. you're probably not praying enough.

  72. Your prayer life should be that, which incorporates all that you

  73. do. What about devotion?

  74. Absolutely, but the special definition for those that are

  75. Advocates of spirituality without religion, say it is

  76. this. It is meditation.

  77. It is prayer. R and it's devotion.

  78. Only, here's the special definition that they give when

  79. they make a distinction between the two for the word religious,

  80. they mean behavior that is associated with activities of

  81. religion, such as forms of worship and also Church.

  82. Attendance, you know, I tell you, I heard a guy say one time

  83. about spirituality and about being a spiritual person and he

  84. said it's better. And he quoted some author.

  85. He said it's better to be like I am spiritually or be spiritual

  86. he said because it's better to be in the mountains.

  87. It's better to be in a mountains thinking about God than it is to

  88. be in a church building. Thinking about the mountains.

  89. Now, when we come together in the church building we don't

  90. think About the mountains, that's true.

  91. When we assemble his worship, we don't think about the mountains,

  92. and that's true. But the concept was this.

  93. I can have, I can be spiritual without worship and without

  94. attendance and without having a religious bond with anybody

  95. else, okay? So, is there really a

  96. distinction between spiritual and religious?

  97. There is a distinction, it is much as there's a difference

  98. between the inward person, or the spirit and the ACT.

  99. Cities of the out were person. That is the body.

  100. Let's give some Bible for that. In 2nd Corinthians chapter 4 and

  101. verse 16, where for we faint not.

  102. But though our outward man is decaying yet, our inward man is

  103. being renewed day by day. So there's a difference.

  104. There's a distinction between the outer man and the inner man

  105. in our worship though. There's also a distinction,

  106. Jesus talked about worship as being in spirit and in truth,

  107. when This was there and the woman at the well Jesus said,

  108. God is a spirit, and those that worship Him must worship him.

  109. We're going to get more to this at the end to in spirit. and in

  110. truth, I want to make this point.

  111. Please get this. It is not good enough to

  112. robotically, go through the mechanics of worship.

  113. We need to put our whole Spirit our whole heart behind it.

  114. In fact, when the Bible talks about from the deepest part of

  115. our heart or the bowels of our heart, it's talking about the

  116. deepest part of emotion. So what do we do?

  117. It has to be in truth. That is right but it also has to

  118. be in spirit. It has to come from the heart,

  119. it has to be the right motive behind it.

  120. All in other words, spiritual is in spirit.

  121. Religious is the part that's in truth.

  122. So yes, there's a distinction between the two words.

  123. However, The biblical distinction between these two

  124. concepts is not nearly as great as some might think it is.

  125. So instead of promoting the idea that you can have one without

  126. the other, the Bible teaches the opposite being religious is

  127. dependent on being spiritual and being spiritual is dependent

  128. upon being religious. Let's look at an example.

  129. In the Book of James James, chapter 1, And verse 26, and 27.

    James 1 chapter mention

  130. James says, if anyone thinks he's religious If anyone thinks

  131. he's religious and does not Bridle his tongue but deceives

  132. his own heart, this one's religion is useless.

  133. Pure and undefiled religion before God.

  134. And the father is this to visit the orphans and widows in their

  135. trouble and to keep oneself unspotted, from the world.

  136. Now we might think that controlling our speech,

  137. controlling our tongue is a spiritual thing.

  138. NG and James says, it's religious.

  139. We might think visiting orphans and so forth and widows is an

  140. activity that we might consider spiritual because it's not

  141. worship and yet James calls it. Pure religion.

  142. Now, the point is, this, you can't be religious without being

  143. spiritual. You can't the opposite.

  144. True is true as well. You can't be spiritual without

  145. being religious, it goes both ways.

  146. Galatians chapter 6. Notice what Paul says here, he

    Galatians 6 chapter mention

  147. said Brethren. If any man is overtaken in any

  148. trespass, You that are spiritual.

  149. Now first of all, who are they, who are the people that are

  150. spiritual some person that's reached a higher level of

  151. perfection know some person that's reached a higher level of

  152. spirituality know whose it talking about.

  153. It's talking about a faithful Christian.

  154. Someone that is walking by the dictates of the spirit, Guided

  155. by the word of God. Not a perfect person because

  156. there is no such thing. What it's talking about is if

  157. He's overtaken in a trespass. Somebody has to come to the

  158. rescue, who's the person that which is spiritual a Christian,

  159. has to come to the rescue. And restore such an one in the

  160. spirit of gentleness considering yourself.

  161. Lest you also be tempted, that's a very powerful Passage.

  162. When you go to try to help somebody interestingly, the word

  163. restore means mend that which is broken and sometimes were

  164. unsuccessful in doing that. But we need to try to do our

  165. best to do that. And the one that is spiritual

  166. goes and tries to restore such an one two men that which is

  167. broken. But do it in a spirit of

  168. gentleness, considering yourself two things.

  169. One don't act like it could never happen to you.

  170. Don't ever act like it could never happen to you.

  171. That's number one. Number two, don't be tempted

  172. into thinking that it could never happen to you, therefore,

  173. you've never done anything that bad.

  174. You would never do what this person did and Elevate yourself

  175. with a haughty Spirit, don't do that.

  176. Lest you also be tempted? I'm going to taste something

  177. anybody can fall. So do so with the spirit of

  178. gentleness consider yourself, lest you also be tempted but

  179. what about this? Bear one another's burdens.

  180. You know, one of the most powerful things that we have is

  181. each other. And it is true.

  182. It is true. That we bear one another's.

  183. Burdens in the word burdens means heavy.

  184. Loads, or heavy weights. That are hard to bear or carry.

  185. That's true. And it is true that in a general

  186. sense. A Christian principle is to be

  187. there for each other and help each other get through stuff.

  188. That is true. But the context of this passage

  189. is specific and not General, it's talking about heavy burdens

  190. that cause your brother, or your sister to sin.

  191. That's what it's talking about. Help them through that.

  192. And really, that's exactly what the Bible is talking about.

  193. When it it says confess your trespasses or your sins to each

  194. other and pray one for another that you may be healed, the

  195. effective fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

  196. In other words have helped in getting through those times and

  197. struggles that we go through that our burdens that are lead

  198. us to sin and help each other in that.

  199. And the Bible says, you fulfill the law of Christ.

  200. So helping people that go astray is a religious thing Helping

  201. each other. Those that are spiritual.

  202. Do a religious thing. Bearing one another's.

  203. Burdens is fulfilling the law of Christ, which is the law of

  204. love. One more idea of though in First

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  205. Peter chapter 2 and verse 5. The church is a spiritual

  206. Institution. In First Peter 2 and 5.

  207. You also as living stones are built up a spiritual house.

  208. So we're talking about that which is religious.

  209. We're talking about organized religion.

  210. We're talking about the church, the body of Christ.

  211. What does Peter say? It is a spiritual house.

  212. What are we doing the spiritual house?

  213. Where a holy priesthood and we offer up spiritual sacrifices,

  214. they go hand-in-hand. In our service to God

  215. worshiping. God involves our self in

  216. religious activities. You cannot be spiritual without

  217. being religious as well going back to John chapter 4 and verse

    John 4 chapter mention

  218. 24. Once More Jesus said, God is a

  219. spirit and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit.

  220. And in truth, the idea of in spirit is the very idea of being

  221. spiritual and in truth is talking about religious.

  222. SLI another words. What the internal is here

  223. manifest itself in the external and we talked about the heart,

  224. right? People struggle with things in

  225. their life, it's because they don't fix it on the inside.

  226. Everything is about that. It's about the inside and the

  227. outside, and they go together the internals and the externals

  228. and they're both there. What does God want them in?

  229. Conclusion. God wants us to be both

  230. spiritual. And also religious do you know

  231. why? Because you can't be one without

  232. the other. Now I want to just say one final

  233. thing. Sometimes people that profess

  234. Christianity. Hurt the cause of Christ because

  235. they're not spiritual. What I mean by that, is this,

  236. sometimes people profess religious things or they call

  237. themself a religious person or they're a part of some religious

  238. affiliation but their life is not demonstrated in that they

  239. don't profess that at all. I'm going to give you one

  240. example years ago. There was a general contractor

  241. and he told me this he said any time that somebody a

  242. subcontractor has on their business card.

  243. Anything at all that resembles that there are He said I take

  244. that business card and I throw it in the trash and I said, why

  245. he says, because everyone that I have dealt with that professes

  246. to be religious. Has been untruthful has lied and

  247. has not been what they said that they were.

  248. That's the damage that happens when our life does not manifest.

  249. What we profess to be, we are religious people members of the

  250. body of Christ, but we also live a spiritual life and we

  251. demonstrate our spirituality in the things in which we do every

  252. day. God wants us to be both.

  253. Both spiritual and religious. I'm through this morning.

  254. I hope that something was said in this little short little

  255. lesson about the subject. If somebody asked the question,

  256. are you spiritual religious? You say I'm both because it

  257. takes both and they go together and you can't have one without

  258. the other. Are you here today and you're

  259. not a child of God? If you're not a child of God,

  260. you can become one today. Come believing in Jesus.

  261. Repent of your sins confess, his name as the Son of God and be
