  1. Our text, this morning is found in the Book of Luke, the 12th

  2. chapter and beginning. There in verse 49 Jesus said, I

  3. came to send fire on the earth and how I wish it were already

  4. kindled but I have a baptism to be baptized with.

  5. And how distressed am I until it's accomplished?

  6. Do you suppose that I came to give peace on Earth?

  7. I tell you not at all, but rather division in verse number

  8. 51. It says, Jesus asked the

  9. question, do you suppose? If I came to bring peace on

  10. Earth, He said, I tell you not at all but rather Division and

  11. think back in your mind's eye, as you picture those, perhaps

  12. Pharisees that were in earshot of Jesus or those Jews that

  13. would have really had an expectation of Peace.

  14. In other words, Jesus is going to shatter all Jewish

  15. expectation. When he says, what he says

  16. about. Not bringing peace on Earth and

  17. bringing division now. Jewish expectation in Psalm 72,

  18. the Bible says that in his days the righteous will flourish with

  19. an abundance of Peace. Zacharias, the father of John,

  20. the Baptist said the sun would guide our feet into the way of

  21. Peace when Jesus healed that woman.

  22. You remember, he forgave that woman.

  23. She was bowed down before Jesus and she was crying and she

  24. washed his feet with her tears and dried those feet with her

  25. hair. Jesus said your It has saved you

  26. go in, peace. Jesus further said to his

  27. disciples. Peace, I leave with you.

  28. My peace. I give to you and one more

  29. passage or one more idea. Jews would.

  30. The Jews would have also understood prophecy and Isaiah

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  31. chapter 9 and verse 6. It says about the Messiah that

  32. he would be the Prince of Peace in Isaiah 55 and also Isaiah 66.

  33. It says, the Messiah would bring peace.

  34. Nice. But here was the problem.

  35. They thought he met National peace.

  36. They thought it would be a time when Jesus would come and

  37. establish his kingdom and would lift the thumb of Oppression

  38. political oppression, and it would remove the thumb of Rome

  39. from them and be lifted. And they would have peace from

  40. that. They misunderstood you remember

  41. in the last week in the life of Jesus, when Jesus is traveling

  42. to Jerusalem and heading there, for the Passover, there were

  43. many that followed Jesus because they thought when he gets to the

  44. kingdom, he's going to establish his kingdom in Jerusalem.

  45. Elam and it would be a worldly Earthly Kingdom and religious

  46. and had nothing to do with religion.

  47. But what Jesus was talking about is Jesus was talking about

  48. spiritual, peace. And may I just say this, we may

  49. have unrest in our country. People are divided in our

  50. country. Political parties are divided.

  51. I got to share something with you.

  52. The first time I've ever seen this, there were these little

  53. boys the other day and I overheard them, you know,

  54. they're arguing over. You know, I was a little boy of

  55. ten years old, I was thinking about throwing a ball around or

  56. playing with toys. I was thinking about hanging out

  57. with my friends, you know what they were arguing over?

  58. One said, Biden is a Biden is horrible.

  59. And the other guy said, I'm not going to talk to you anymore.

  60. If you badmouth mine, I'll pull it back and forth about politics

  61. arguing. So it's true that our country is

  62. divided with regards to political ideas.

  63. Okay. What about in the world?

  64. What about unrest, in the world? There's all kinds of unrest

  65. right now. We've gone through this

  66. pandemic, we have things that we have not had before and we had

  67. we have to talk about and deal with K.

  68. We've been inconvenienced. We pray to God that we will have

  69. peace in this world and there will be War.

  70. Absolutely, we pray to God, that the laws of our country would

  71. not keep us from worshiping God. We pray for that.

  72. We pray that there won't be unrest and when God answers

  73. those prayers favorably he does. So by his Providence and an

  74. answer to prayer, and that's wonderful, and that's great, but

  75. that's not what he promised when he talked about promising,

  76. peace. It was talking about spiritual

  77. peace. And may I say this, the peace

  78. that surpasses all understanding that the Bible talks about in

  79. The Book of Philippians chapter 4 is having the peace that

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  80. everything is okay between you and God from a spiritual

  81. perspective and that is not subject to circumstances.

  82. That means, you can have all kinds of bad stuff going on, but

  83. you can be at peace because that's spiritual peace, and it's

  84. not subject to the circumstances of life.

  85. Now interestingly, though Jesus says this, Do you suppose that I

  86. came to give peace on Earth? I tell you not at all. but

  87. rather division, what we have here is, we've got Division and

  88. we have a dividing event And we have also a dividing instrument,

  89. please get that. And really this sermon has two

  90. points, the dividing event, and the dividing instrument.

  91. Now, let's talk about the dividing event for just a moment

  92. in Luke chapter 12. Beginning in verse 49, 50, I

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  93. came to send fire on Earth how I wish it were already kindled,

  94. but I have a baptism to be baptized with and how distressed

  95. I am until it is accomplished. I'm going to get to that event

  96. and, you know, just a moment but notice this, that one event,

  97. divides people into two categories and that division is

  98. in both time and also eternity. Okay, the dividing event.

  99. So, let's notice in verse 49. Jesus says, I came to send fire

  100. on the earth. This phrase I came by the way,

  101. you can trace it through the New Testament and you can find it to

  102. be a technical phrase or Term describing it aspect of the

  103. Lord's Ministry or his purpose, or his mission.

  104. For example, he came to seek and save that, which is lost in the

  105. great Sermon on the Mount. He said, think not that.

  106. I've come to destroy the law or the prophets.

  107. I didn't come to destroy, but to fulfill.

  108. So anytime the Bible talks about the Lord, saying I have come or

  109. I came, it always refers to various aspects of his mission.

  110. What did he say? What was this?

  111. Purpose. His purpose was to send fire on

  112. the Earth. Now, let's talk about fire for

  113. just a minute. Fire does one of two things.

  114. It consumes or it purifies. It consumes that, which is

  115. combustible. It purifies that which is non

  116. combustible now. Purifying is a good thing

  117. consuming is a bad thing. In other words, it matters what

  118. you subject to the flame. You've heard me say this many

  119. times over the years, the fire that melts, the wax is also the

  120. same fire that will harden the clay.

  121. It depends on what you subject to the flame.

  122. So, fire does two things. The purpose that Jesus said I

  123. came to bring fire on the earth and fire either can Zooms or it

  124. purifies something else does too.

  125. And that's the gospel, the gospel purifies or punishes or

  126. condemns one of the two. Now how do you know how do you

  127. know if the gospel is purifying or punishing it's based on your

  128. response? The gospel either saves orphans.

  129. I'm going to tell you, we believe what the word of God

  130. says, and we're so thankful that there's a message given and

  131. there's a way that we could be saved.

  132. And the Bible says that God has chosen the foolish Miss of

  133. preaching to save them that believe the world thinks it's

  134. foolish and sometimes people that reject the gospel, they

  135. think it's foolish. How many people in your life

  136. think the way you believe in the way you practice in the way you

  137. Worship in the way you live, how many people have thought you're

  138. ridiculous? How many people have criticized

  139. you in your life? And said, I don't understand how

  140. you can go for all that stuff. It either saves or fangs and

  141. what determines whether it's saves her fins.

  142. Is your response to the gospel in verse 49?

  143. after he said, I came to send fire on the earth and he said

  144. this and how I wish It were already kindled.

  145. Now that's an interesting phrase because kindling is something

  146. that gets fire started. The new King James says, how I

  147. wish you were already kindled, and I like that because that's

  148. in the form of a statement, the King James.

  149. Renders it like this, more, like a question, it says, and what

  150. will I if it be already kindled? So what we're talking about is

  151. this, we're talking about an event, a dividing event.

  152. He said I came to bring fire on The Earth and how I wish you

  153. were already kindled. Interesting about that phrase,

  154. it's talking about this. It's talking about I wish you

  155. were already over. Okay, I wish it were already

  156. over. What's the event?

  157. The event is the cross. The event is the cross, the

  158. event is the kindling. To get the fire started. now in

  159. verse 50, Jesus said, but I have a baptism to be baptized with

  160. and how distressed I am until it is accomplished, make no mistake

  161. about it. The Garden of Gethsemane was not

  162. the only time the Lord was in agony.

  163. When his soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death.

  164. Don't think for a minute, that the only time he felt that the

  165. only time that he felt that was in The Garden of Gethsemane.

  166. The Lord lived, a life of Perpetual Gethsemane.

  167. He knew from the very foundation of the world that it was God's

  168. Will from the foundation of the world.

  169. God's appointed will that Jesus Christ would be the Lamb of God

  170. and die for the sins of the world.

  171. Jesus knew that he willingly came to this earth lived, a life

  172. that was flawless. Alice and Perfection sinless

  173. Perfection, so that he could be God's lamb and go to the cross

  174. and died for the sins of the world in the Garden of

  175. Gethsemane, though. We see it brought forth when he

  176. prays to his father, multiple times.

  177. If it be possible, let this cup pass from me.

  178. But not my will, but your will be done.

  179. Finally with a determined resolve.

  180. He said if there's no other way except I drink it, he said your

  181. will be done. That's the Garden of Gethsemane.

  182. This is before the Garden of Gethsemane.

  183. And he says this. I have a baptism to be baptized

  184. with and how distressed I am until it is accomplished.

  185. So what's that talking about? That's talking about the the

  186. cross in Matthew chapter 20? You remember this when the

    Matthew 20 chapter mention

  187. mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with the sons and

  188. said, when you established your kingdom, and when you go into

  189. your kingdom, would you put my son one here on the left and one

  190. here on the right. In other words, give them a leg

  191. up in the Kingdom. You know what?

  192. Jesus said, he said you did not know what you ask.

  193. Are you able to drink the cup that I'm about to drink and be

  194. baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?

  195. You know, interestingly about the word baptism.

  196. The word baptism, there means to its Baptiste.

  197. So it means to plunge, Dipper, immerse.

  198. We know that, right? And for water baptism.

  199. How many times have we describe what that means?

  200. And for scriptural, baptism? It has to be in water as a

  201. burial. We get that.

  202. But did you know? The word baptizo also has a

  203. fourth definition, and this is the definition that Jesus is

  204. using baptism here. The fourth definition, literally

  205. means to be overwhelmed. It means to be.

  206. In fear. Make no mistake about it.

  207. It doesn't take anything away from the Lord.

  208. When we say he had fear. Because there is no such thing

  209. as courage when there is no fear.

  210. So, to have courage and stand for courage and stand for,

  211. right? You have to have some fear what

  212. he's saying is the baptism. He's overwhelmed with this.

  213. And then he says this. I am distressed.

  214. That's what the Lord said. And the word distress literally

  215. means to cease or be overcome with fear until it is

  216. accomplished. So notice this, there's one

  217. event dividing event. It divides people into two

  218. categories and that one event is the cross.

  219. The dividing instrument is the gospel and Jesus knew that the

  220. gospel would divide. So we This.

  221. I wish it was already kindled. In other words, the cross part

  222. was out of the way. I am troubled with fear.

  223. I am distressed I am seized in that regard.

  224. So the one event is the cross, the dividing instrument is the

  225. gospel and that division is in Time and Eternity.

  226. Both Now, we understand that, don't we?

  227. We understand about About time about eternity in eternity.

  228. Luke chapter 12, not going to go into these passages, but it

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  229. describes two different kinds of people.

  230. It describes an obedient person and a disobedient person.

  231. And we understand that, right, we get that, obviously the

  232. reason we serve God is, we want to go to heaven, but we also

  233. don't want to be lost. And we also understand this too

  234. that, the long-suffering of God is salvation.

  235. God wants everybody to be saved, but not everybody is saying,

  236. why, because of their lack of response to the gospel.

  237. Oil and living a Godly life. That's what the Bible says.

  238. So, we get that. So, when I look at this idea in

  239. eternity, I understand there's going to be saved and lost but

  240. what about this? What about in time?

  241. In verse 52 of Luke 12. Jesus says, for from now on five

  242. and one house will be divided three against two and two

  243. against three. In other words, this is how it's

  244. going to be moving forward. Father will be divided against

  245. son and son against father, and mother against daughter and

  246. daughter, against mother, and mother-in-law against her

  247. daughter-in-law, and a daughter-in-law against her

  248. mother-in-law. Do you know why?

  249. Because the gospel divides. The gospel divides and that's

  250. how it is. I want to share something with

  251. you. One of my favorite passages.

  252. In all the scriptures when Jesus dealt with three men.

  253. He dealt with three men that kind of acted like they were

  254. going to follow him but something kept them from total

  255. commitment, some stood in their way.

  256. The first guy was a scribe and Jesus conveys to him basically

  257. which standing in your way is lifestyle, your lifestyle

  258. standing in the way. The second guy, the riches

  259. worldly riches were standing in his way.

  260. But the third guy, he said I will follow you, but let me

  261. first go bid them farewell who were at my house and Jesus says

  262. no man putting his hand to the plow and looking back is fit for

  263. the kingdom of God. We understand what that means.

  264. It was an ancient proverb dating back to 800 BC, and it means

  265. this, you can't plow a straight Furrow when your eyes are

  266. looking back. What did the Lord know about

  267. this, man? He knew that family ties were

  268. keeping him from following Jesus.

  269. Now, you may never have to give up your lifestyle.

  270. I don't whatever your lifestyle is.

  271. You may not have to give up your lifestyle to follow Jesus, but

  272. you have to be willing to you may not have to give up riches.

  273. You may have all kinds of wealth are wealthy people in the Bible.

  274. Their wolf wonderful people that use their money for the cause of

  275. Christ. Wonderful stuff.

  276. You may not have to give up your riches or things of that nature

  277. in life to follow Jesus. But you have to be willing, And

  278. you know what? You may never have to stand

  279. against family. But you have to be willing.

  280. I don't know how that is in your life, but I'll tell you this

  281. right now. Serving, God is everything.

  282. I've told this story before 1984, but the young man that

  283. wanted to obey the gospel and he wanted to be baptized and my dad

  284. was talking to him and he understood what he needed to do.

  285. And he's probably I think he was probably about 15 or so at the

  286. time, And we went to his family's house and said that he

  287. wanted to obey the gospel and the grandmother said, if you do

  288. this you're out of my will you're out of the will that

  289. young man says leave me out. In other words, Family Ties.

  290. Did not stand in his way. We can't let anything stand in

  291. our way. So, here's the big question, as

  292. I close as I close Is it worth it?

  293. Is it worth it? Because anytime you pay a price

  294. for something, you have to ask yourself, is it worth it?

  295. And things of Great Value are valuable because of what you're

  296. willing to give up for it. We understand that that's our

  297. life that we live. So I'm asking you this, if you

  298. have to stand against everything in the world, that comes your

  299. way to follow Jesus, are you willing to do it?

  300. And is it worth it? Well, that question was also

  301. asked in Matthew 19, then Peter answered and said to him.

  302. See we have left all and followed you Therefore, what

  303. shall we have two verses later love?

  304. This is what the Lord said, this is about the worst.

  305. That part, what are we going to have verse 29?

  306. Everyone who has left houses, or brothers or sisters or father or

  307. mother, or wife or children or lands for my name's sake, shall

  308. receive a hundredfold and inherit eternal life. do you

  309. remember when Jesus said, Except you eat my flesh and drink my

  310. blood. You shall not have eternal life,

  311. remember that? By the way, I don't believe

  312. that's talk about the communion. He's talking about obedience to

  313. the word of God. Okay?

  314. And that's what how he described it.

  315. You know what the Bible says, the Bible says that many stopped

  316. walking with the Lord, because of what he said, And you can

  317. almost hear, can you not the tone in the Lord's voice as he

  318. turns to his disciples? And he said, what about you will

  319. you also go away? And Peter says to whom shall we

  320. go for you have the words of eternal life?

  321. Is it worth it? Yeah, it's worth it.

  322. It's worth anything and everything to follow the law.
