  1. As we understand the setting. Now we know that Jesus concluded

  2. his time with the 11 in the upper room.

  3. From verses 13 through 17. We know that he spent time

  4. promising. Those disciples wonderful

  5. blessings in the new age to come and praying to the father that

  6. the father would care for them. And the time that Jesus would go

  7. to the cross. And not only then, But

  8. continuing at that point and now the hour is come to move toward

  9. Calvary. And so Jesus leaves that upper

  10. room with that little group of 11.

  11. He goes out of the gate down the little slope of Kidron crossing

  12. the Winterthur and up the other side into the Mount of Olives to

  13. a place called The Garden of Gethsemane.

  14. And in this Garden, Jesus spends time in prayer, agonizing over

  15. the anticipation of sin, bearing and separation from God.

  16. And as we studied a few weeks ago, Jesus went there because he

  17. knew that Judas knew that he would go there, he realized that

  18. his hour had come and it was time for him to die and it makes

  19. it very easy for Judas to lead that angry mob on that.

  20. Day on that night to find him, certainly proving that Jesus was

  21. no man's victim but Jesus was the ultimate Victor.

  22. You remember that? We also studied and saw the

  23. great and tremendous power. That is magnified in Jesus.

  24. You remember when Judas came and gave the Betrayal kiss saying,

  25. hail Master? But Jesus turned their well

  26. planned maneuver into a Triumph of his own power when he said,

  27. who are you looking for? For and they said, we're looking

  28. for Jesus of Nazareth and Jesus responded like this.

  29. He says, I am he or that word? He is in italics, if we take

  30. that out from the original Jesus simply said, I am.

  31. And the Bible says, when he spoke these words, they all fell

  32. back. They all fell flat later on.

  33. Jesus would ask them again. He said, who you looking for?

  34. And they would respond. We're looking for Jesus of

  35. Nazareth and Jesus proving that he was in complete control.

  36. Said If you're looking for me, he said here I am and let these

  37. men go. You see Jesus was building a

  38. little shelter over his disciples getting them to admit

  39. from their own mouths that they were only looking for Jesus

  40. proving again always in control and never a victim.

  41. But you remember this and it was the last scene before we ended

  42. our sermon last time, the Peter jumps out of this little shelter

  43. of protection. And he tiny takes matters into

  44. his own hands and he remember as they're standing there and Judas

  45. is standing there. And all of a sudden, the Bible

  46. says that Peter grabs, his sword and he cuts off the ear of

  47. malchus. Now, I'm going to share

  48. something with you. I thought about this this week.

  49. Actually remembering how I used to think or are used to think

  50. this was talking about and when I was a kid, I used to hit men.

  51. Peter must have really been a skilled swordsman.

  52. He took his sword, he took careful aim and he took that

  53. sword went right down the side of Malcolm X's head and sliced

  54. off his ear. Sending him a message.

  55. Don't mess with us. I think that when I was a kid

  56. You know, there's nothing in all the Bible that says, that he was

  57. a skilled swordsman and I don't believe that he cut his ear off

  58. because he took careful aim and hit his Mark.

  59. I think he cut his ear off because he missed.

  60. I think he swung to cut his head off, and Malcolm has turned his

  61. head like this, maybe something like that.

  62. And he sliced off his ear. What was wrong with Peters

  63. reaction? Jesus had built a shelter of

  64. protection over those disciples getting them to admit, not once,

  65. but twice, we are only looking For Jesus.

  66. And Jesus says, well, if that's the case, you let these men go

  67. Peter took matters into his own hands, didn't he?

  68. Jesus grabs that ear? Whatever it was is mangled, as

  69. it was, the language seems to indicate that he mended the ear

  70. creating almost a new one and he put it back on the side of the

  71. head of this man called malcolmus.

  72. The problem with Peter is he tried to jump out of the

  73. shelter, the Lord provided. And that's exactly what happens

  74. today. When man stops listening to the

  75. Lord and starts thinking for himself.

  76. How many times religiously speaking has a man got himself

  77. in trouble because he stopped listening to the Lord and

  78. started thinking for himself every time man gets in trouble.

  79. And so, did Peter in the long ago.

  80. We can almost hear the tone, in the, in the words of Jesus, as

  81. he puts the ear back on malka, sand-based.

  82. Basically, as I paraphrase, turning to Peter and saying,

  83. Peter, put that thing away. For he who will live by the

  84. sword shall die by the sword. Now then verses 12 through 27,

  85. we find that there are two dramas that are taking place,

  86. not one, but two, these are separate dramas, they are

  87. separate scenes and they are in separate locations and it will

  88. only be at the end of our sermon this morning when we will see in

  89. Luke's account in Luke chapter, 22 that these two scenes are

  90. going to come together and they're going to meet.

  91. But what we have is we've got one drama going on over here and

  92. we got another draw. AMA going on over there.

  93. You got jesus' trial right here and you got Peters denial over

  94. here. And as I mentioned, just a

  95. moment ago, these scenes are interwoven in our passage.

  96. It is almost like it's saying this talk about Jesus trial for

  97. a little while and then all of a sudden it's as if it's saying

  98. and meanwhile over here in Peters denial and a few more

  99. things are said about Peters denial and then meanwhile back

  100. over here at the try. It seems as though it's it's

  101. written. And kind of like that.

  102. But I'm going to tell you something folks.

  103. There are two basic foundational truths.

  104. That is found in these passages, and that is this.

  105. We see the absolute Glory of Jesus Christ.

  106. And at the very same time, we see the sinfulness of man.

  107. And we see as sinful as man, was, we see the willingness that

  108. Jesus had to pay the great price for sinful man.

  109. That not only didn't deserve it, but was actually literally

  110. denying him. At that moment.

  111. Okay, here we go. Jesus Is trial.

  112. I guess we'll call this act. 1 verses 12 through 14, and verse

  113. 12. The Bible says, then the

  114. Detachment of troops and the captain of the officers of the

  115. Jews arrested, Jesus and bound him.

  116. You know, there's a very interesting thought here and

  117. description in this multitude because in this, we find a very

  118. good illustration of the kind of people the world picture of

  119. those that deny Jesus today. In this multitude, you have

  120. every kind of person, every kind of Walk of Life in this great

  121. mob. And we've already proven that

  122. there were hundreds of them, In this angry mob, there was

  123. Gentiles and Jews. There was heathens and religious

  124. people. There were soldiers and

  125. servants. There were priests and

  126. Pharisees. There's every different kind of

  127. fella that you can imagine was with this mob.

  128. And, you know, they didn't have all things in common, but there

  129. was one thing that every single one of these had in common and

  130. that was this they were totally and completely stone-cold blind.

  131. To the incomparable qualities of the Son of God, they were

  132. absolutely unaffected by the magnificence of Jesus Christ.

  133. They were untouched. They were unmoved.

  134. And I'll tell you this, that is a great picture of the grip, and

  135. ugliness of sin, the blindness and ugliness and grip of sin.

  136. You know, when we look at this scene, somebody tells me say why

  137. people are interested more today than ever before.

  138. We sit there with the word of God was showing me exactly what

  139. they need to do to be saved. Just as simple as that and then

  140. it but they don't accept it, they reject.

  141. When we look at what happened on this occasion, it's easy for us

  142. to understand what happened. What happens today?

  143. Based on what's already happened?

  144. Get this. They rejected Jesus, and he was

  145. standing right in front of them. He speaks to words.

  146. And they all fall down, unfazed and unaffected.

  147. That's nothing new. Though the Apostle Paul said

  148. this, the God of this world has blinded the minds of them that

  149. believe. Not lest the light of the

  150. Glorious gospel of Christ. Should shine unto them.

  151. The God of this world is the same kind of idea.

  152. When the Bible talks about Satan, being the prince of the

  153. power of Darkness, Prince of the power of the air.

  154. Now, they come in verse 12, in the Bible says that they bound.

  155. Jesus, you know, there's probably several reasons why

  156. they bound him. Jesus didn't fight back.

  157. Jesus, didn't try to resist. If in fact, you remember

  158. remember a couple times ago when they came into the Garden of

  159. Gethsemane and they were aware that torches and lanterns and so

  160. forth and so on, you remember that, I said that Scholars

  161. indicate that there's probably a full moon at that time and

  162. Jerusalem would have been little lid.

  163. They didn't need that to fit to travel from Jerusalem to the

  164. Garden of Gethsemane. They needed those lanterns

  165. because they thought Jesus would hide, they'd have to go to every

  166. nook and cranny In The Garden of Gethsemane and see where Jesus

  167. was and they found him. Not only did they find him right

  168. off? He walked toward them.

  169. Why they binding? Well first of all, is common

  170. practice to secure a captive. If you go to a rest, somebody,

  171. if you go to arrest, somebody even today.

  172. What do they do? They put handcuffs on you, you

  173. may not be resisting but it's a sign of your captivity or of

  174. being arrested. Secondly, in Matthew chapter 26

    Matthew 26 chapter mention

  175. and 48, do you remember when Judas is having making his deal

  176. with these haters of Jesus? He's making his deal.

  177. And he says this, when I as I paraphrase, when I lead you to

  178. Jesus, when you see him when you get him, what did you say?

  179. He said hold him fast. I don't know why I said that,

  180. but that's what Judas said and I would imagine that that's part

  181. of it. But beyond that there's

  182. something else. There's certainly a very

  183. beautiful fulfillment of typical prophecy.

  184. You remember, last time we talked about the fact that there

  185. are two kinds of Prophecy there is verbal predictive prophecy,

  186. which is a statement that is made, that is fulfilled or will

  187. be fulfilled. Then there's a typical prophecy

  188. in which certain acts a certain person or certain thing typifies

  189. a fulfillment. Here's an example of verbal

  190. predictive prophecy. It's when a statement like this,

  191. Has made about Jesus unto us. A child is born unto us a son is

  192. given verbal predictive prophecy.

  193. Now, on the other hand, there is sacrifices of the Old Law, and

  194. every time that a sacrifice was laid on an altar, it was a

  195. picture of Jesus Christ. It was a type that is typical

  196. prediction. Now, both are accurate equally

  197. Lee and both are important equally.

  198. So Jesus is bound and in so doing fulfilled, typical

  199. prophecy because in the Old Testament, according to Psalm

  200. 118 and 27, the Bible says, bind the sacrifice with cords under

  201. the horns of the altar. In other words, when the

  202. sacrifice was given it was to be bound.

  203. Another example, very familiar, passage Genesis 22 and 9

  204. regarding Isaac. Isaac was a perfect prophetic

  205. type of Jesus Christ, a picture of Jesus.

  206. And the Bible says, when he was laid on that altar to be

  207. sacrificed, he was bound to the altar, Something else to, this

  208. is just a side note here. But you remember when they were

  209. going they spent that three days and they were traveling

  210. together. And Abraham was with Isaac.

  211. Who was carrying the wood? Bible says it was Isaac.

  212. And you know, never in time prior to that time, had that

  213. which is to be sacrificed carry, the wood that it would be

  214. sacrificed on never happened before.

  215. And it never happened again until Calvary when jesus carried

  216. his cross. Perfect.

  217. Perfect. Fulfillment of typical prophecy.

  218. Being bound, was a fulfillment of typical prophecy.

  219. Certainly Bound To the Cross was the ultimate fulfillment.

  220. It of that prophecy in preparation for sin in verse 13.

  221. We find we. Now get down to the nitty-gritty

  222. of the trial, and the Bible says, they led him away to Anise

  223. first for. He was the father-in-law of

  224. Caiaphas. Who was the high priest that

  225. year? Let me just say this.

  226. Anna's and Caiaphas. These guys were real crumbs, I

  227. don't know how else to put that these with the Despicable the

  228. lowest of the low. These guys are crumbs but they

  229. are extremely important to our narrative.

  230. When Jesus was taken to Anise, this is the first phase of

  231. jesus' trial because Jesus had not one, but he had two trials

  232. that day. He had a religious trial and he

  233. had a Civil Trial, his religious trial had to do with Israel, his

  234. Civil Trial had to do with Rome. Now, nothing could be done in

  235. terms of Jesus has a Execution without Rome, Israel could

  236. decide that he should die, but it was Rome that had to carry it

  237. out. It was Rome that had to execute

  238. in. And so, first of all, we have a

  239. religious trial and that trial had three phases.

  240. Number one, right after he was bound in the Garden of

  241. Gethsemane, there was the arraignment and the indictment

  242. and that was before this man named anise.

  243. The second phase of this religious trial was an illegal

  244. Gathering when Caiaphas got together with the Sanhedrin, not

  245. the next day, not a proper trial.

  246. He got together with the Sanhedrin that very night, Phase

  247. 2, phase 3, the next morning again, Caiaphas and the

  248. Sanhedrin, only this time, it was false Witnesses gathered

  249. together in a mock trial. Three phases of his religious

  250. trial. On the other hand, there were

  251. three phases of the Civil Trial when Jesus was taken before

  252. Pilate and pilate didn't know what to do with him.

  253. In fact, pilot would never know what to do with, in fact, pilot

  254. after examination later on says this he says I wash my hands of

  255. the blood of this just man. I walked my hands of the whole

  256. thing. I'm not going to be guilty of

  257. the blood of this honest and true.

  258. And just man. There's the pilot first, then he

  259. said sent to Herod the tetrarch of Galilee who happened to be

  260. down in Jerusalem at the time and hair didn't know what to do

  261. either. So what's he do?

  262. He sends him back to pilate. That's phase. 3 of the Civil

  263. Trial. Let's talk about who anise was

  264. for, just a little while, and this was a very powerful and

  265. immensely rich, man. This was a man that really ran

  266. the show. He was a man that was in charge

  267. of concession booths. Now, I'm not talking about when

  268. I say concession booths, I'm not talking about hot dogs and

  269. popcorn, not talking about, a concession stand, talking about

  270. a couple of things. First of all, I'm talking about

  271. the sale of livestock and secondly, I'm talking about when

  272. they would come to pay taxes. They would come and they were,

  273. they bring foreign currency and they would need to exchange the

  274. foreign currency in order that they might pay taxes.

  275. In fact, that's why. Jesus was infuriated, we'll get

  276. to that in just a moment. The problem is and this was a

  277. man that was full of extorting the people.

  278. In fact, some Scholars say that as much as five times, he

  279. extorted them as much as five times what the actual rate would

  280. have been. An awful, man.

  281. In fact, the Jews themself selves hated anise.

  282. The talmud says this, which was a commentary of history.

  283. And so forth, said this about anise and I quote, woe to the

  284. house of anise. Whoa, to their serpents hiss.

  285. They are high priests, their sons are keepers of the

  286. treasury. There's sons-in-laws Guardians

  287. of the temple and their servants, beat the people with

  288. staves. Now, anise literally hated

  289. Jesus. Let's go back.

  290. Just a few days now. Jesus, making his triumphal

  291. entry into Jerusalem about a week prior to the time that he

  292. would be taken to the Cross. You remember, when Jesus came

  293. into Jerusalem, when Jesus overturned the tables of the

  294. moneychangers member that he said, as I paraphrase in essence

  295. this, you have taken the house of prayer and you have made it a

  296. den of Thieves. You don't think that was eaten

  297. anise. It sure was He messed up his

  298. whole plan. Jesus made messed up his entire

  299. plan. Not only was he the brains

  300. behind the Machinery? This man and us but he was

  301. messing up his business. There was a great reason to

  302. bring Jesus before Anna's because if anybody had the power

  303. and had the enticement to indict, Jesus, it certainly

  304. would have been anise. So Jesus is brought before

  305. Anna's first and then we meet a man named Caiaphas Caiaphas had

  306. to be introduced because Caiaphas was technically the

  307. high priest. At this time, according to verse

  308. 13. And in verse 14, it says now it

  309. was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient, that

  310. one man should die for the people.

  311. Now Caiaphas have been plotting, the death of Jesus all along.

  312. Jesus began to be very very popular.

  313. You know, I think there's a lot of reasons as we mentioned

  314. before, why they we Jesus had them come and take him in

  315. private. Jesus was very popular.

  316. They didn't do it in the downtown streets of Jerusalem.

  317. There might have been a big Riot.

  318. Jesus was giving himself up, so he did it in private and he knew

  319. Judas would come there with that.

  320. Angry mob. Absolutely.

  321. Jesus was very popular. In fact, when Jesus came in and

  322. his triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

  323. The Bible says that he came on the back of a Colt of a donkey,

  324. and they were crying out Hosanna.

  325. They were magnifying Jesus. He was coming on the back of a

  326. Colt of a donkey, but they were elevating him those that loved

  327. him and those that he was popular among Caiaphas was

  328. worried sick about Jesus. And so Caiaphas had been

  329. planning his death all along. Let's go back before the

  330. triumphal entry into Jerusalem and John chapter 11 and John

John 11 chapter mention John 11 chapter mention

  331. chapter 11 verse, 49 Caiaphas had gotten together with his

  332. people, his cronies his whoever and they got together and they

  333. were discussing the matter of Jesus.

  334. Very important, we've got to discuss about Jesus.

  335. Do you remember what they said? They'd send a kind Fisk when

  336. Caiaphas began to extend to them his concerns.

  337. They said back to Caiaphas, don't worry about that.

  338. It's To go away. It's no big deal.

  339. It will all just come to pass. It will all just be.

  340. All right, you know what kind of just said he said, you know, not

  341. what you say another word, you don't know what you're talking

  342. about. He goes even further.

  343. This is amazing, Caiaphas says now, this is long before know,

  344. we're the reason they were talking about.

  345. We got to do something about Jesus because Jesus raised

  346. Lazarus from the dead and they were worried about their worried

  347. about the people that would follow Jesus.

  348. And so Caiaphas says this, not only do you not know what you're

  349. talking about but you can't understand and you can't even

  350. see that it is expedient, get this.

  351. Now it's expedient. That one man should die.

  352. That a nation be spared. You don't even understand that.

  353. It's expedient. That a one man die for the

  354. nation. Now.

  355. Interesting Caiaphas is saying this.

  356. Because he wants literally Jesus taken out of the way because

  357. Jesus is going to mess up the nation.

  358. There's going to be a revolution, the Romans are going

  359. to come in. They're going to take over and

  360. they're going to wipe us all out.

  361. We've got to do everything that we can possibly fathom to kill

  362. Jesus to take him out of the way.

  363. But I like what the Bible says, in verse 51, because he was

  364. speaking prophecy, and he didn't even know it in verse 51 of John

    John 11 chapter mention

  365. chapter 11. It says, now this he did not say

  366. on his own authority, but being high priest that year he

  367. prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation.

  368. Now, how do you like that? He opens up his ugly, hateful

  369. mouth with political end in mind saying, we have to remove Jesus

  370. from the equation and let's just kill one of them.

  371. Let's kill the head and let the entire nation be spared.

  372. He was prophesying that one man would die.

  373. That a nation figuratively there or world with people may live?

  374. And what's amazing, there is the Bible says Caiaphas didn't even

  375. know what he was saying. And God still in control was

  376. through his lips, speaking prophecy to those that would

  377. hear him. Now, I said all that to say this

  378. Caiaphas hated Jesus and Caiaphas was plotting to get rid

  379. of him. You know, sometimes people do

  380. that, they get an idea in their mind.

  381. For example, they may have a position on a certain Bible

  382. passage or position about something regarding our life.

  383. And the things that we do and don't do what's right and what's

  384. wrong. And it seems though, people what

  385. they want to do is they want to get the idea first.

  386. I have this idea first, I think it ought to be this or I think

  387. it is this then try to figure out a way to justify the belief.

  388. And sometimes people make decisions in advance.

  389. And then over time, try to justify the reason for making

  390. that choice of the choice was already made.

  391. Regarded. God's word.

  392. We have to read God's work study, God's word know, God's

  393. word and then obey and follow God's word, not the other way

  394. around. Caiaphas wanted to kill him a

  395. long time ago. It was a done deal, he was going

  396. to make it happen. He just needed a reason.

  397. Just needed a reason. To justify it.

  398. Now, back over at Peters denial, verse 15 and Simon Peter

  399. followed Jesus. And so did another disciple.

  400. Now that disciple was known to the high priest and went with

  401. Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest.

  402. Now, in Mark chapter 14 and 54, it says that that Peter followed

    Mark 14 chapter mention

  403. Jesus of far off. Now, I don't know how far back

  404. he was following him but he obviously was following him afar

  405. off. Jesus had been taken captive.

  406. He was out. In front somewhere, and all of a

  407. sudden, Peter is with some other disciple.

  408. Now, number one, it was a far-off.

  409. He was sneaking around as it were, maybe just through the

  410. bushes. I don't know behind the rocks,

  411. trees. Of far off with another

  412. disciple. Who is this other disciple?

  413. I'll just say right now. I have no idea.

  414. I don't have a clue. Because it doesn't say it's kind

  415. of like to Luke 24, replayed. This is walking along with

  416. another psycho. Who's the other disciples some

  417. say was Luke. Who knows?

  418. Who knows? It doesn't matter because it

  419. wasn't given, but I'll just say this in passing.

  420. It's just a little free tip, if some commentators say that it

  421. was John. And the reason for that is that

  422. they believe that John actually sold.

  423. It says that whoever this disciple was, it was known to

  424. the high priest. Some say was, John because,

  425. John's father probably sold fish to the high priest.

  426. We don't know. Oh that either that's the

  427. problem. We don't know that he ever did

  428. that some say it was Nicodemus and Nicodemus is going to come

  429. on the scene to prepare the body of Jesus in a little while after

  430. he was crucified some say it could have been him some say it

  431. was Joseph of Arimathea and the reason for that is the Bible

  432. actually calls him a secret disciple and this guy, he would

  433. have been able to walk freely anywhere.

  434. He wanted to go why he was a member of the Sanhedrin.

  435. He was a secret disciple. And it wasn't, until after Jesus

  436. was crucified that this secret disciple, mustered up the

  437. courage. To go and ask the body of Jesus.

  438. I kind of think it might have been him.

  439. Preference. Doesn't matter at all.

  440. Bottom line is Peter, is walking along with this unnamed

  441. disciple. Now, picture this No, sooner

  442. that Jesus puts a shelter of protection over his disciples.

  443. And you know, really if you remember there's a good reason

  444. why he did that, not because the disciples were scared, Jesus

  445. needed these disciples after he had died on the cross.

  446. And after Jesus was taken away, he needed these ambassadors.

  447. That's number one. Number two, he needed him safe.

  448. Number two, he spoke to them about their faith.

  449. In time past, the only said, oh, ye of little faith.

  450. He knew that they couldn't stand a trial like this.

  451. He creates a shelter of protection over them.

  452. And fact Matthews account says, all forsook him and all fled,

  453. everybody except Peter, what's Peter doing?

  454. He's doing the same thing that he did regarding malcolmus.

  455. He stopped listening to the Lord and started thinking for himself

  456. and he's going along and he's walking along and he sneaking

  457. along with this. Other disciple.

  458. Now, let me just make this point for me, just really beat up

  459. Peter here in all fairness. Peter truly loved Jesus.

  460. Peter loved Jesus. Peters motives were good.

  461. His intentions were good. Here's the problem.

  462. The problem was his overwhelming self-confidence, made him

  463. believe that he could hack through any problem without the

  464. security of Jesus Christ. He thought I can do it, I can

  465. go, I can go and I can handle any problem that comes my way

  466. and I can just hack right through the whole thing and I

  467. can do so without the security that Jesus Christ.

  468. Provided I can do that. You know, I'm gonna tell you

  469. something, you need to have confidence to live your life.

  470. That's true. We need confidence.

  471. We all need confidence. There's a difference between

  472. confidence though. And overwhelming

  473. self-confidence. Now, we need to be confident in

  474. our life because of our faith and trust in God.

  475. When our faith is planted in our faith is on what it ought to be

  476. that our confidence and our trust will be what it it ought

  477. to be. But when we start thinking too

  478. highly of our self that we can handle anything in the world,

  479. that comes our way and we don't need the security that Jesus

  480. provides that's when we get in trouble.

  481. Now, before we get too hot about Peter, let's look at our lives

  482. all of our Lives, shall we? I know.

  483. That's not very fun. But the Lord says this, I'm

  484. going to give you a secure place.

  485. I'm going to give you a place where you can be secure.

  486. The Lord said, don't get out in the world system ever that world

  487. Cosmic the word Cosmos. It is the invisible evil.

  488. Influence that combats. The church.

  489. He says, don't get out into the world system, don't entertain

  490. yourself with the world's entertainment, don't gobble up

  491. the world's Customs. Don't be a part of that scene.

  492. I have built for you a place where you can grow and you can

  493. be safe and friends. That is the church.

  494. We have Security in the body of Christ.

  495. We encourage one another. We not only have the Lord, we

  496. have each other, There are security and you know, we go to

  497. a gospel meeting. Don't you feel strengthened?

  498. I do why you just spent time on the same page worshiping god

  499. with people. That works him.

  500. Just like you and believe just like you do and have the same

  501. faith. Hope and trust in the same Lord.

  502. What happens what happens is when Christians do this?

  503. When they say, you know, your kid me, I can handle it.

  504. I can go out in the world and remain strong.

  505. I can go and do what the world does and I'll be all right.

  506. I'm going to tell you something, folks.

  507. Any time we do that, we fall. We really do.

  508. You know, I'm at a some when I was younger I'm just going to

  509. throw myself out there. Here we go.

  510. When I was younger. Okay, a lot lot, lot, lot

  511. younger. Okay, I made poor choices

  512. because I thought I was strong enough to handle it on my own.

  513. You know what I sinned? I made mistakes and I send and I

  514. fell Now, I never stop coming. But I guarantee I wouldn't ride.

  515. I was a boy and I wouldn't, right?

  516. And I had to make those things, right?

  517. I'm going to tell you any time that you think that you can take

  518. yourself and remove yourself from the security of the Lord

  519. has provided and go out in the world that participated things

  520. in the world and be strong. You are kidding yourself. as was

  521. I, Verse 16, Peter stood outside the door.

  522. Then the other disciple who was known to the high priest went

  523. out and spoke to her who kept the door and brought Peter in,

  524. you know, I don't know exactly how the scene was, but it seems

  525. to me that this other disciple goes in first and says something

  526. to this girl. And then kind of turns back to

  527. Peter. Come on, Peter.

  528. Let's go coast is clear. Jesus has already.

  529. He's already taken their far off.

  530. Girl at the door. Come on Peter.

  531. Let's go through. And notice what happens.

  532. Now, the servants Verse 18 and the officers who made a fight

  533. actually, Went too far. Okay.

  534. Here we go verse 17, then the servant girl who kept the door

  535. said to Peter. You are not one of this man's

  536. disciples, are you? And he said, I am not now

  537. picture this Peter was not afraid to stand there.

  538. In the Garden of Gethsemane side by side and fight for his Lord.

  539. He was not afraid for that. Guess what else he was afraid?

  540. He wasn't afraid. He was ready for what he was

  541. ready to follow Jesus, and be there at this big trial.

  542. Bye. He was ready for the big stuff.

  543. He had planned for the big trial.

  544. He had said to the Lord, if they take you and they take your

  545. life, I'm going to be there with me.

  546. If I lose my life, I will never leave your side.

  547. And remember what Jesus said to him?

  548. We'll get to that in a minute. He was ready for the big trial.

  549. He was ready for the big stuff. Sometimes we're like that too.

  550. We're ready for the big stuff. You're ready for that will stand

  551. for that. He was ready for the big stuff,

  552. and he was not afraid of the big stuff.

  553. The guess, what? He was scared to death to tell

  554. the truth. He was afraid and didn't have

  555. the courage to tell the truth. You know why telling the truth

  556. takes real courage? It is harder to tell the truth.

  557. When you have to accept the consequences of your answer,

  558. whatever that is, it's harder to do that than it is to fight.

  559. Peter was ready for the big trial but he wasn't ready for

  560. the little girl at the door, interesting folks, That's what

  561. Satan does and that's how Satan works.

  562. You get self overconfidence that you think in your mind, you can

  563. handle anything. And just about that time you

  564. fall And you know what? Peter now is stuck with his lie.

  565. Everybody stuck with Evan been stuck on the LIE, you tell a lie

  566. because you don't have the courage to say what's right?

  567. You tell a lie and then you're stuck with the lie.

  568. So you have to lie again and then you're stuck with a lie.

  569. So you got to lie again. Then you can't remember, by the

  570. way, it's always better to tell the truth.

  571. It is. You know, why you don't have to

  572. remember anything. You just say it.

  573. Like it was. You don't have to remember what

  574. you said. Last time.

  575. All you got to remember what the facts were.

  576. But a liar somebody that tells lies you have to remember what

  577. you said, the last time and then keep lying and lying and lying

  578. and that's being stuck with the lie and that's exactly what

  579. happened to Peter. And you know, with those words,

  580. those three words amazing, he's ready to go.

  581. And she says, you are not one of the disciples, are you, you

  582. know, it's written in a way that she knew the answer and he said,

  583. I am not. With those three words gone.

  584. We're all of his heroic promises that he made the Jesus with

  585. those three words. Gone were all his all of his

  586. courage that he had. In his heart.

  587. Gone was all of his fleshly confidence, which became an.

  588. And while he became an arrogant coward unable to confess his

  589. Lord, cringing and lying denial. And you know something The

  590. entire thing happened so fast. He didn't even know what hit

  591. him. Look at Verse 18, look at the

  592. progression. What's happening now to Peter.

  593. Now, the servants and the officers who made a fire coals

  594. stood there for, it was cold and they warm themself Peter stood

  595. with them and warmed himself. Now I got a question for Peter,

  596. don't you? What in the world are you doing

  597. there? What are you doing there, Peter?

  598. Why are you there you stood next to the Lord in the garden?

  599. But now you are standing among. You are denying the Lord now and

  600. you are standing among the enemies of the Lord.

  601. How does the guy get messed up so badly?

  602. How does that happen? First three ways first, his

  603. overconfidence convinced him, he could make it on his own and

  604. that happens today. Folks, I can go out and do what

  605. the world does. I can do those things.

  606. I can buy a little bit of the world's morality.

  607. I can flirt a little bit with the world's kind of thinking,

  608. and it's going to be fine, and I'll be fine because I'm strong,

  609. that's number one. Here's number two.

  610. Peter was unprepared. I'm going to tell you, I've said

  611. this so many times because my dad.

  612. Screamed in my head, my whole life, you have to decide the

  613. kind of person that you want to be in advance before you are

  614. faced with the Temptation, you have to understand, you have to

  615. prepare yourself on how you're going to act in any time.

  616. Are you going to stand up for the Lord?

  617. Are you going to deny the Lord when you're at work?

  618. What people are using foul language at work, but we going

  619. to laugh at their jokes a little ride along with those things.

  620. Are we going to make the determined resolve?

  621. The we're not going to participate in those things.

  622. Are we going to be of, we ready for the big stuff?

  623. But scared of a girl with the door?

  624. You have to decide what you're going to be.

  625. So do I we all do before you're faced with the Temptation or you

  626. will fall Somebody asks you a reason of the hope that is in

  627. you with meekness and fear. Somebody asks, you that are you

  628. real? Are you able to respond in like

  629. manner? With meekness and fear, thirdly,

  630. because of his unpreparedness. He's now standing with the

  631. enemies of Jesus and that was Peter and that's exactly the

  632. pattern for falling. Starting off with getting

  633. involved in worldly things and then all of a sudden.

  634. Now here's Peter with warm hands and a cold heart.

  635. Back at the trial verse 19. the high priest and asked Jesus

  636. about his disciples and his Doctrine, you know what's

  637. interesting to me about this is this this line of questioning

  638. was illegal They're now asking questions about his disciples

  639. and his Doctrine, the law stated that when anybody was brought on

  640. trial, he could not testify to bring guilt upon himself.

  641. The evidence had to be presented from Witnesses, testifying

  642. against him. Another words, a man was

  643. innocent until proven guilty. There was really a fifth

  644. amendment thing going on, where no man could condemn himself by

  645. his own word. But this trial wasn't legal,

  646. there's trial was a mockery. They already determined that

  647. Jesus would die, they were just trying to justify their actions.

  648. So they asked Jesus, why don't you tell us about your disciples

  649. tell us about your Doctrine. He wanted Jesus to talk about a

  650. planned Insurrection or to talk about his heresy, so they could

  651. say there it is. Aha, gotcha.

  652. You're planning a revolution. You're a heretic.

  653. If they can do that, they already planned to kill him, but

  654. if they can do that now they've got justification.

  655. Look how Jesus responds. So beautifully and verse 20.

  656. Jesus answered him. I spoke openly in the world.

  657. I always taught in the synagogues and in the temple

  658. where the Jews always meet and in secret I said nothing verse

  659. 21. Why do you ask me?

  660. Ask those who heard me what I said to them.

  661. Indeed, they know what I said. Verse 22 and when he had said

  662. these things, one of the officers who stood by struck

  663. Jesus, with the palm of his hand.

  664. Saying, do you not answer the high priest like that?

  665. You know what's interesting is this word struck?

  666. It could also mean it comes from a word rep yzma.

  667. And it could also mean to be struck with a stick.

  668. I don't know if it's going to be symbolic or not but in Micah

    Micah 5 chapter mention

  669. chapter 5 and verse 1. We have these words, they shall

  670. Smite the judge of Israel with a rod on the cheek.

  671. Now, whether this was figurative or literal, there's certainly a

  672. perfect fulfillment of prophetic language, Micah calls.

  673. Jesus, the judge of Israel. Now, anise was the acting judge.

  674. He was playing judge, but little did he know that?

  675. This was the real judge. Jesus responds to this and verse

  676. 23 by saying if I have spoken evil bear witness of the evil.

  677. But if well, why do you strike me?

  678. Jesus is saying where are your Witnesses and?

  679. Why are they hitting me? Why is that verse 24 that Anna

  680. sent him? Bound to Caiaphas the high

  681. priest and it's messed up. He blew it.

  682. He had been indicted. There were no charges against

  683. Jesus so he sends him to Caiaphas.

  684. And the trial was Caiaphas was certainly a mockery in the

  685. middle of the night. During the time, he was with

  686. anise there, they had gathered together, the Sanhedrin and

  687. Caiaphas to carry out this mock trial.

  688. And all that was was a gathering of false Witnesses.

  689. Was a part of the plot all along they found no evidence against.

  690. Jesus, finally, to agreed that they were going to he was going

  691. to destroy the temple. But that wasn't enough.

  692. So finally, he's simply asked, are you then the Messiah, And

  693. Jesus says, I am in the Bible says that the high priest

  694. grabbed his clothes and ripped his clothes and yelled

  695. blasphemy. Bible says, they they push him

  696. along now. Shoving him along.

  697. There were those that were part of the angry mob that were

  698. slapping him in the face and says, and says, to him prophesy

  699. unto us, Now, King prophesy, who is he?

  700. That smote thee? But, you know, just in case we

  701. think that Jesus was being humbled here or in a real mess,

  702. I want you to notice Peter's Denial in verses 25 to 27 and

  703. will close with this. Now, Simon Peter stood and

  704. warmed himself. Therefore, they said to him you

  705. are not also one of the, his disciples are you.

  706. He denied it and said, I am not one of the Servants of the high

  707. priest are relative of him whose ear Peter cut off said, did I

  708. not see you in the garden with him Peter then denied again and

  709. immediately the rooster crowed. You know, Luke's account in,

  710. Luke 22, and verse 60 talks about these two, seems now that

  711. have been inner woven throughout our text and and The Gospel

  712. according to John, Luke brings them together.

  713. And right after Peter says, I know not what thou sayest.

  714. Another account says, With cursing and swearing, he said, I

  715. know not the man. Right after.

  716. He says, I know not what thou sayest Luke's account.

  717. The Bible says that Jesus turned and he looked, Upon Peter.

  718. When Peter heard the cock Crow, he remembered that the Lord said

  719. before the cock crows Peter, you will deny me three times.

  720. Peter goes out and he weeps bitterly.

  721. I'ma tell you something, folks, any of us at any time, if we're

  722. not living as we should, there is only one way out.

  723. And that's to look back to the face of Jesus and come back.

  724. That's it. And every time we sin, that's

  725. the only thing we can do, and have the blood of Jesus, wash

  726. our sins away when we confess those wrongs and ask God to

  727. forgive us once we are baptized into Christ.

  728. But there's a message here that we can all learn.

  729. You know when the Bible talks about be careful when you go to

  730. restore somebody that has fallen be careful and don't ever have

  731. the attitude. It can never happen to me.

  732. That's the truth. We can't ever have the attitude

  733. that it would never happen to us because I'm going to tell you

  734. something. Here's a perfect example of how

  735. a strong believer in Jesus. An apostle of Jesus Christ can

  736. be tempted, can be weak and can fall.

  737. I could happen to anybody any of us.

  738. At any time. We learned from this narrative,

  739. the danger of self overconfidence, we learn the

  740. danger of prayerlessness. You know, Peter should have been

  741. praying in the garden and not sleeping.

  742. We learn the danger of evil company in our life.

  743. We learn the power that fear can have in our life to, we learn

  744. all that But I'm going to tell you this.

  745. If you go with me and I'm almost finished, Stay With Me.

  746. I'm going to tell you this. It has a happier ending.

  747. Because Peter did fall and Peter was sorry.

  748. But the Lord restores him before Jesus ascended to his father

  749. where he is now, He restored him.

  750. Please notice chapter 21 of John and beginning in verse 25 and I

  751. will be finished first 15. I'll be finished.

  752. And when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon,

  753. Simon, son of Jonah. Do you love me more than these?

  754. He said to him? Yes.

  755. Lord you know that I love you. He said feed my Lambs He said to

  756. him again a second time, Simon son of Jonah.

  757. Do you love me? He said, yes.

  758. Lord, you know that I love you, he said unto him.

  759. Tend my sheep. He said to him a third time,

  760. Simon son of Jonah? Do you love me?

  761. Peter was grieved? Because he said to him a third

  762. time. Do you love me?

  763. And he said to him, Lord, you know, all things.

  764. You know that I love you. Jesus said feed my sheep.

  765. I think it's interesting, just in passing here.

  766. Jesus has this man confessed, his Lord, and confess his love

  767. for his Lord three times. One for every time you denied.

  768. Notice though. What Jesus says most assuredly I

  769. say to you. When you were younger, you

  770. girded yourself and walked where you wished.

  771. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and

  772. another will gird you and carry you, where you do not wish,

  773. notice what this means. The next verse this, he spoke

  774. signifying by what death he would glorify God and when he

  775. had spoken this, he said to him, follow me.

  776. You know, what? That tells me, that tells me

  777. Peter was restored. And it tells me that Peter was

  778. going to pay the ultimate price. It always cost something to

  779. follow Jesus. It costs us everything to follow

  780. Jesus. Here's the thing.

  781. And this is what we hope for this.

  782. What we hang our hat on in our life, right here.

  783. What Paul said, I have fought the good fight.

  784. I have finished. My course, I have kept the faith

  785. henceforth. There is laid up for me a crown

  786. of righteousness that the Lord. The righteous judge, shall give

  787. me on that day and not to me only, but to all those that love

  788. his appearing. There's a price but I take this

  789. the reward far outshines the price.

  790. It's worth infinitely, more than the cost of being a Christian.
