  1. It's good to be here with all of you today.

  2. I have on the screen here, the passages under consideration in

  3. First Peter chapter 3 and beginning there in verse 1.

    1 Peter 3 chapter mention

  4. And you might remember that about four years ago, I taught

  5. on these passages but I just thought today especially as

  6. today is Mother's Day, that these would be passages that

  7. would be helpful to us and encouraging to us as we've given

  8. our lesson a title. And that is a Godly wife.

  9. And mother are passages are found in First Peter chapter 3.

    1 Peter 3 chapter mention

  10. Three and as we begin in verse 1, we will read wives, likewise,

  11. be submissive to your own husband's that.

  12. Even if some do not obey the word, they without a word, may

  13. be won by the conduct of their wives.

  14. When they observe your chaste, conduct accompanied by fear, do

  15. not let your adornment be merely outward.

  16. Arranging the hair wearing gold or putting on a fine apparel,

  17. but rather let it be the hidden person of the heart with the The

  18. Incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet Spirit, which is very

  19. precious in the sight of God. May I just say that the two

  20. great decisions that we have to make in life?

  21. That are the most important decisions we will ever make.

  22. Number one is our decision to obey the gospel and become a

  23. Christian. There's no greater decision that

  24. we will ever make. But the second great decision

  25. that will determine so many things in our life, especially

  26. our happiness is who were going to marry.

  27. And if you as a man, find the right woman that is a Godly wife

  28. and Godly mother. You are extremely blessed.

  29. So valuable a Godly wife and mother.

  30. I want to talk about these passages for just a little

  31. while, but first of all, as we go to verse one, verse one

  32. wives, likewise be submissive to your own husband's a little bit

  33. of background here. When Peter begins with the word

  34. likewise, what he's talking about is a continuation from

  35. what he just said. In the second chapter Peter said

  36. to be submissive to Civil Authorities.

  37. He's he also said Masters be submissive to your or servants

  38. be submissive to your Masters. So what he's saying here is

  39. likewise be submissive to your own husbands and these are

  40. talking about wipes you know I have to make a point here.

  41. This passage is not talking about somebody that marry

  42. somebody. That's not a Christian.

  43. The background is this. There are two people that are

  44. married and they hear the gospel, the wife obeys.

  45. The gospel becomes a faithful child of God but the husband has

  46. not done so. So what Peter's talking about is

  47. he's talking about, what should your relationship be?

  48. And what are your duties? As those wives he says wives in

  49. this category? Wise, be submissive to your own

  50. husbands. Now I got to say sometimes

  51. people think that submission is an act of weakness sometimes

  52. people even say this putting somebody in their place, there

  53. is nothing more unscriptural than the interpretation of a

  54. woman being in submission or subjection.

  55. There's nothing more unscriptural than interpreting.

  56. It like this, that the woman is to get in her place, that is not

  57. found in the Bible. In fact, this word submission is

  58. found in the King James version as subjection.

  59. It is this Greek word here and it means to arrange under or

  60. Subordinate. Now here's where it's an act of

  61. strength. It's a willful act.

  62. I'm going to tell you something. Jesus thought it not robbery to

  63. be counted equal with God but made himself of no reputation.

  64. There's no greater example than Jesus who made the willful act

  65. of submission to God and God's plan in the scheme of

  66. redemption. Jesus was a strongest man that

  67. ever lived not weak at all, he submitted himself.

  68. What else did Jesus do? He made himself to be for a

  69. time, a little lower than the Angels so that he could die and

  70. All that means is this it didn't mean that the Angels were

  71. greater than Jesus. It meant that the Angels were

  72. ones who could not die. So therefore, he made himself

  73. lower than the Angels like a human being because we can die.

  74. That was a willful act of strength.

  75. It's the same kind of connotation about wives being in

  76. submission to their husbands. It is a willful act Peters

  77. teaching is in perfect, Accord with Paul's instructions in

  78. Ephesians, chapter 5, listen to this wives, submit yourself to

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  79. your own husband's as to the Lord, for the husband, is the

  80. head of the wife. As also Christ is the head of

  81. the church, and he is the savior of the body.

  82. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ.

  83. So let the wives be to their own husband's in everything.

  84. One more passage Colossians chapter 3 and beginning in verse

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  85. 18 wives, submit yourself to your own husband's as is fitting

  86. in the Lord. Husbands love your wife and do

  87. not be bitter toward them. You know this is God's plan.

  88. I heard somebody say one time. Yeah, I know it says all that

  89. but times have changed and I really think God wants us to use

  90. our heads. You know, that's not found in

  91. the Bible. If God said for me to do

  92. something or any of us to do something, it really doesn't

  93. matter what we think about it. We might think that by way of

  94. our own wisdom and our own human reasoning, we might think that

  95. it's a better idea to do something else.

  96. That's not the point. The point is, it's about what

  97. God wants and what God Said is in the structure of this

  98. marriage relationship that a woman would be submissive to

  99. their own husband's. That a husband would love his

  100. wife. As Christ.

  101. Also loved the church, it's a willful act.

  102. Therefore it's nothing of inferiority.

  103. It's an act of Courage, obedience and strength.

  104. Have you ever considered that the woman's role is a position

  105. of Courage, obedience, and strength.

  106. Absolutely. So Even if the husband is not a

  107. Christian, First Corinthians 7:2, Paul gave the physical side

    1 Corinthians 7:2

  108. of the physical reasons, he said, nevertheless, because of

  109. sexual immorality. Let each man have his own wife

  110. and let each woman have her own husband.

  111. Now, Peter is now giving reasons on the spiritual level and here

  112. they are, here's the reasons on the spiritual level that even if

  113. some do not obey the word very important here.

  114. Okay? The Word obey is a word that

  115. describes as Thayer says, somebody that absolutely will

  116. not be subjected to what is said.

  117. In other words, here's somebody that hears, the word of God,

  118. they hear what the Bible says, and by the way, that's the

  119. gospel, but they absolutely will not submit to it.

  120. That's what he's saying. So here's the picture, you have

  121. a Godly Christian woman, she's a faithful member of the Lord's

  122. Church. You have a husband that wants

  123. absolutely nothing to do with it.

  124. In fact, when he heard the word of God, he has rejected it at

  125. least for a Time. But look at the power of a Godly

  126. wife. Notice right here.

  127. In fact, one scholar said these husbands were obstinate non

  128. persuadable. They were the type that would

  129. not listen to reason and Peter says this, even if some do not

  130. obey the word, they without a word may be won by the conduct

  131. of their wives. Now, we have to make a couple

  132. points here about what has the power to save.

  133. Peter's not saying that a woman has the power to save because

  134. you know what, nobody in the world has the power to save.

  135. We can be an influence on people, but nothing in the world

  136. has the power to save accept the gospel.

  137. Paul said, in Romans 1:16 for, I am not ashamed of the gospel of

    Romans 1:16

  138. Christ for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone

  139. who believes to the Jew first and also to the Gentile, or the

  140. Greek as the King James says. So in that we understand the

  141. word of God, only the word of God has the power to save but

  142. look at the power of a Godly life of his wife.

  143. He heard the word of God. At one point wants nothing to do

  144. with it, but he may be won by the conduct of their wife

  145. without her saying a word. That's what that means.

  146. Now, I'm going to tell you, when you look at the King James

  147. version on this passage, it says this that even if some do not

  148. obey the word, they without the word may be won by the conduct

  149. of their wives, it seems a little confusing.

  150. But what he's talking about is this not obeying the word of

  151. God, but they will in the future.

  152. Perhaps, without the woman saying a word May be persuaded

  153. to hear the gospel again and Obey it down the line because

  154. the gospel is the only thing that has the power to save what

  155. we're saying is this. The silent.

  156. But powerful persuasion of a believing Behavior has the power

  157. to do great things. One man said one time that Godly

  158. conduct is more powerful. Than persistent speech.

  159. Now that brings us to verse 2 when they observe your chaste

  160. conduct accompanied by fear. You know this words, observe is

  161. in the King James it says behold and it's only found in the

  162. Epistle of Peter. It's only found in First Peter

  163. and it's found in two places. It's found right here and it's

  164. also founded. I'll read you the passage in 1st

  165. Peter chapter 2 and verse 12. Listen to this.

  166. Having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles that when

  167. they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good

  168. works which they observe glorify God.

  169. In the day of visitation what a powerful passage that even

  170. people, that would criticize you and speak evil of you.

  171. You live your life in such a way that they'll be ashamed.

  172. When they see how you live, it'll make everything that

  173. they're saying by way of an evildoer false.

  174. And What else? They may even have an

  175. opportunity to observe you, therefore glorify God in the day

  176. of visitation? What does it mean in the day of

  177. visitation? Well, if you look back into the

  178. Old Testament, you find the day of visitation where oftentimes,

  179. as, when God came and judgment but here in that passage and

  180. found in the New Testament, it's talking about the offer of

  181. Salvation. So notice this you live your

  182. life in such a way that when people in the world, observe

  183. your life, they will be. Shame that would falsely accuse

  184. you absolutely as an evildoer. But what else?

  185. It will have the power or the influence that when they hear

  186. the word of God, the day of visitation, they'll obey it and

  187. become a Christian. Now, that's the same thing as

  188. the wife. But what are they going to

  189. observe those husbands? First of all, they're chased

  190. conduct accompanied by fear. Chased means pure from Fault

  191. Immaculate, and by the way, That doesn't mean perfect.

  192. It doesn't mean perfect being Immaculate means free from

  193. accusation. So what he's saying is this when

  194. your husband's continually observe, your chaste, or pure

  195. from fault or or Immaculate conduct, it will have that kind

  196. of power fear. They are says, is the term of

  197. reverence and respect. So, in conclusion of that,

  198. thought the immaculate Life manifested by Godly living will

  199. be seen by the Believing partner who otherwise would never see

  200. the word of God. But the word of God is the only

  201. thing that has the power to save, but The Godly life of a

  202. Christian spouse can lead the unbeliever to respond and listen

  203. to the gospel and Obey it in the future.

  204. All right, all of that is now the foundational proportion.

  205. In general of our lesson. Now we go to verse 3 and

  206. sometimes verse 3 is very much misunderstood.

  207. So let's begin verse 3. Do not let your adornment be

  208. merely outward. Arranging the hair wearing gold

  209. or putting on fine apparel. The Christian wife is not to

  210. depend on outward, adornment to win her husband.

  211. To Christ her adornment Rises From Within it, comes from what

  212. is on the inside. And by the way, what you are in

  213. every way on the inside is what you will be on the outside.

  214. Side. In every way.

  215. Sometimes people say the, I know he does all this stuff.

  216. But he has a really good heart. Really.

  217. If you're good on the inside, it will manifest itself as good on

  218. the outside. You can't say I am one way when

  219. really, I'm not and you can't separate your behavior and your

  220. choices and your actions from what you are on the inside, they

  221. go hand in hand. So what he's saying is this, you

  222. wives, do not let the adornment be merely outward.

  223. It's what is on the inside. So three distinct areas.

  224. Now, here they are the way she wears her hair, the jewelry.

  225. She selects and the Carol that she puts on now here it says the

  226. adorned merely outward arranging of the hair but we also find

  227. that that word is to plate or be either woven or braiding.

  228. According to the King James version and by the way, this

  229. doesn't mean that a girl cannot braid her hair.

  230. Not with that means at all. fact, I used to say this one

  231. Taylor was little Wherever she would have some activity.

  232. Need to have her hair braided, I would do it.

  233. I can why you get it tight, you know, when you grew up riding

  234. horses, tails you figure out how to do that.

  235. So I learned how to do that. Breda tell you can braid some

  236. hair and I was good at it because I got a real tight.

  237. Real tight braids. Is that what that's talking

  238. about is it forbidden for a woman to braid her hair?

  239. Absolutely not. Let's notice what it actually

  240. means. According to the King James

  241. version, it is called plating or boarding abroad.

  242. Bring the hair. Now, in 1st, Timothy Chapter 2

  243. and beginning in verse 9, Paul said this.

  244. In like manner also that the woman Adorn themselves in modest

  245. apparel with propriety and moderation.

  246. Not with broided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing but

  247. which is proper for women. Professing godliness.

  248. Now, evidently Paul is giving insight into the extravagant

  249. excesses among women in the first century.

  250. Roman Empire noticed what mr. Vincent said and I quote The

  251. attendants will vote on the dressing of the hair as if a

  252. question of reputation, or of life worth steak.

  253. So great is the trouble. She takes in quest of Beauty

  254. with so many tears. Does she load?

  255. I tried to figure out what that look like.

  256. We're so many tears, does she load with so many continuous

  257. stories? Does she build up on high her

  258. head? She is.

  259. As tall as and Rumaki in front. Which by the way, was the Greek

  260. mythology. The Wife of Hector captured by

  261. the Greeks at the white at the fall of Troy, in the front

  262. behind she's shorter, you would think her another person.

  263. That's somebody that went out of their way to do something by way

  264. of a personal outward. Look Clement of Alexandria.

  265. Said, this first century women were given to Great Extremes in

  266. braiding and plaiting, their hair, gold and silver were

  267. intertwined and twisted within the strands with pearls.

  268. Now, this is what Peter and Paul is condemning not by braiding.

  269. The hair, would you talking about?

  270. He's talking about This he's talking about stuck in the hair.

  271. Mile-high with all of this show and then interweaving Pearl and

  272. gold and all of that in it, an outward show.

  273. In other words, don't try to win your husband to Christ by the

  274. outward show. And I want to make a side point

  275. here. This is talking about in

  276. context, somebody that's a Christian trying to convert

  277. their non converted spouse. But there's a secondary thought

  278. here. Is there not If you're a young

  279. lady, don't try to attract a young boy by doing the same

  280. things. Let it be on the inward side,

  281. and we're going to get more to that in just a minute, but never

  282. let it be from an outward show. Paul said, Peter says, don't do

  283. that. Don't let it be that which is on

  284. the out side. Now, the wearing of gold wearing

  285. is to put around or hang down according to mr.

  286. Thayer now, it seems as though in passing by That there is a

  287. general prohibit prohibition to wearing gold but that's not the

  288. case. That's not the context in the

  289. Greek text at all wearing gold. It was the adornment of the

  290. golden ornaments that were placed around the head or the

  291. body. And the Greek text really is

  292. talking about that is talking about lavish conspicuous

  293. displays of jewelry, the wearing of jewelry is not forbidden for

  294. a Ian woman, but garlic gaudy, elaborate displays of expensive.

  295. Jewelry is the same thing. As the artificial manner of

  296. wearing the hair and then he says this.

  297. So don't do that. Don't Let It Be by way of

  298. arranging, the hair, or wearing gold.

  299. But then he says this, or putting on of fine apparel.

  300. The Greek uses two words for clothing.

  301. One word is clothing to protect and cover the body.

  302. That's not the word here in this passage.

  303. The other is a word that describes clothing, that is

  304. ornate, its decorative with complex patterns or fancy and so

  305. on and so forth. The putting on of apparel is not

  306. to be understood unconditionally prohibited just like braiding

  307. the hair or wearing gold. They're not unconditionally

  308. prohibitive. So, The point is this Christian

  309. women are not to depend on outward adornment to win their

  310. husbands and their adornment must come from the Christian

  311. heart and that brings us to verse 4.

  312. Here it is. This is what how we should do.

  313. So But let it be the hidden person of the heart.

  314. Now, what's the heart sometimes in the Bible?

  315. Heart refers to your deep feelings.

  316. Like when you would say, for example, I love you with all of

  317. my heart or when Paul was writing to Philemon and wanted

  318. Philemon to forgive onesimus. He says, this is my whole heart,

  319. in other words, that's the deepest part of my feelings.

  320. That's not the word heart hear the word heart and this passage

  321. is talking about intelligence reason and will So let it be

  322. from the intelligence reason and will the hidden man of the heart

  323. First Corinthians 4:16? Therefore, we do not lose heart.

    1 Corinthians 4:16

  324. Even though our outward man is perishing yet the inward man is

  325. being renewed day by day by the word of God.

  326. So, the Inner Man of the heart is, what is under consideration?

  327. In other words, as Christians, Christians clothing should be

  328. consistent with the Purity and beauty of the Lord who, dwells

  329. in his, or her heart. I want to say something.

  330. You know. To the young ladies.

  331. And by the way, the end of this little lesson is my favorite

  332. part. Because we're going to talk

  333. about how valuable our precious daughters are, that's my

  334. favorite part of this whole thing.

  335. Okay, can't wait to get there but I want to say something to

  336. the young lady's right now. if you have to dress a certain way,

  337. To attract a boy, he ain't for you.

  338. We don't need him here in worthy.

  339. And if you feel like you what to do that to attract the boy, A

  340. little problem with the heart. We don't want to do that when we

  341. get our heart, right? If a boy cannot look at you and

  342. see the inner beauty that you are as a child of God, we don't

  343. need him around. He ain't for us.

  344. And remember this, remember this, the hidden man of the

  345. heart. What's on the inside?

  346. Again, will manifest itself on the outside?

  347. And may I also say this, if we're having trouble with being

  348. modest, Fitting in and I'm going to say this to listen, I'm

  349. almost 55 years old, had been that long ago, that I was a

  350. young person to. And when I was a young person, I

  351. know how peer pressure's come down and you want to fit in.

  352. And sometimes you feel alienated and ostracized, because you

  353. don't feel like you fit in, I get it.

  354. It's sometimes hard to stand and be the outsider, right?

  355. I get it. But I'm going to tell you

  356. something folks, if we're having struggles with that, because

  357. there is a way to dressed. It's worldly.

  358. There's a way to dress that's in modest.

  359. And if we do that, we struggle with that, it's because we're

  360. struggling with the heart. Got to fix it on the inside and

  361. a precious godly woman is what's important.

  362. And may I say this too. Don't ever think you have to

  363. settle or compromise. Oh, I better compromise or I'm

  364. never going to get a spouse. No.

  365. Be the Christian. You should be be the best person

  366. that you could be. Let Jesus come forth in your

  367. life and other see it and somewhere along the line.

  368. You may find somebody that's worthy of you.

  369. I got to tell you I was going to say this at the wedding when

  370. Taylor and way got married, but I start bawling, I could have

  371. done it. But I went up, I cut it out.

  372. She doesn't even know this, but I cut it out and I was going to

  373. say that. I, when Taylor was born, I

  374. remember, I remember when she came out and I got to go into

  375. the NICU unit with her, and I remember I couldn't stop crying.

  376. I was so thankful that I had a little girl.

  377. And I'm going to take something as a dad.

  378. I don't know if a greater gift that have a daughter.

  379. I just don't incredible. And I now have a little girl.

  380. And I thought man there's nobody in this world going to be worthy

  381. of that, little girl. Nobody. and then when Wade came

  382. along, I started praying for it because that's the right kind of

  383. man that will see my daughter to understand.

  384. Hey, I Loved Her First and God loves her too.

  385. And Jesus loves her too. And a man that is willing to see

  386. those things. That's what's important.

  387. They are worthy of their affection, their love and their

  388. worthy of having those Godly women for their wife.

  389. Don't ever settle. Don't ever ever settle a

  390. Christians clothing. Should be consistent with the

  391. Purity and beauty of the Lord who dwells in their heart.

  392. Now I want to say this now What is the importance of a wife or

  393. the importance of the role of a mother?

  394. And a wife, how important is that?

  395. We bring up our daughters to Aspire to fulfill that role.

  396. And I got to tell you, we spend a lot of time, don't we?

  397. We need to, we need to bring up young boys at they'll be

  398. teachers in the church. That true.

  399. Yeah, well, we need some evangelists reason preachers.

  400. We got to train, those guys to be preachers that true.

  401. Yeah, we need to get those guys that want to be elders.

  402. And Dickens, in the Lord's church, is that important.

  403. Absolutely, you've heard my series on that, and I said that

  404. a person is going to be a deacon or an elder.

  405. Someday has to purpose in their mind Wayne Advance before when

  406. they're young to be a Godly person and pursue it is all that

  407. true. Yes, it is.

  408. We spend a lot of time talking about the young men because of

  409. this passage right here. Psalm 144 and 12 that our sons

  410. may be as plants grown up in their youth.

  411. Is that true? Absolutely true.

  412. Absolutely true in the Hebrew, by the way, you know, it says in

  413. the Hebrew, it says they'll be grown large in their youth.

  414. The meaning the direct meaning of that is they'll cut become

  415. Stout, strong, and vigorous and well-formed, even early in life.

  416. One scholar said it like this. He offered this paraphrase.

  417. I love this. Make our sons in their Prime, be

  418. like, sturdy, Oaks in other words, not going out in sowing,

  419. their Wild, Oats, as it were, but being strong in the Lord in

  420. their youth. You know, I'm going to tell you

  421. something, I don't know anybody. Including me.

  422. I don't know anybody that reflects back on their youth.

  423. Without at least a little bit of regret.

  424. Right. I mean, if you can say that you

  425. look back on your youth with no regret more power to you, I

  426. can't I haven't made every decision, just right.

  427. So is it important that we understand this?

  428. Absolutely. We need those young men to grow

  429. up as plants grown up in their youth.

  430. Be strong oak trees. Absolutely, we need to do that.

  431. That's true. But the second part is what I

  432. love so much. One translation.

  433. Renders it like this. Look at this, our daughters will

  434. be like carved columns shapely as those of the temple.

  435. The new English version, adds this crucial picture.

  436. Look at this. It says, our daughters will be

  437. like Corner, pillars, carved, like those in a pelops before I

  438. go any further, let me ask you something.

  439. Young ladies daughters. Do you have even a clue as to

  440. how valuable you are? How necessary you are.

  441. Look, not only about the young boys, but what about this?

  442. Our daughters will be carved. Like, carved column shapely and

  443. of those of the temple, our daughters will be like Corner

  444. pillars and the King. James know, it says they'll be

  445. Corner Stones. That's pretty important in it.

  446. You know, that words being used to that Cornerstone words.

  447. Been used again with the Lord. When you talk about the church,

  448. the kingdom and Jesus is the chief Corner Stone, same

  449. language about the home. Cornerstones.

  450. I want to read you something bear with me while I read it

  451. all. Listen to this, listen to what

  452. was being described by way of Bible palaces back in those

  453. days. Listen to this.

  454. In Bible times, Palace has contained a number of large

  455. columns. They were both decorative and

  456. weight-bearing. The most expensive columns were

  457. cut from Marble. They were highly polished and

  458. carefully put in place. The most important of those

  459. columns were placed at the intersection of two or more

  460. walls. These core columns were crucial

  461. because they held everything together.

  462. The master Craftsman would take extra time, choosing the best

  463. materials working overtime, to produce a stone that's cut to

  464. exact measurements and Polished to a high degree of Brilliance.

  465. If they were cut wrong or play strong, the entire building

  466. would be unsound but when properly placed, they became the

  467. foundation and Connecting Point for everything else.

  468. Don't be deceived though by the emphasis on beauty and Grace.

  469. These columns were Not Mere ornaments added to please the

  470. eye. They were Corner pillars that

  471. held the palace together and folks such is the image of Godly

  472. daughters. They're like highly polished

  473. carefully, chosen perfectly placed Corner columns that hold

  474. together. The palace where the king,

  475. dwells such a noble goal for our daughters to raise a polished

  476. Corner pillar That will one day hold her family together with

  477. strength, and joy, and love and laughter, having a contagious

  478. faith in Jesus Christ. Yes.

  479. As I've stated God's base, God's best gift to any man is a Godly

  480. woman of strength and beauty. Her worth is far more above

  481. rubies. Such a woman is truly God's

  482. Masterpiece. And I like, what one man said,

  483. one time about the family He said the father is the head of

  484. the home? But the mother.

  485. Is the heart. And the children.

  486. Are the hope. The structure in God's eyes, or

  487. how it should be. Make no mistake about it.

  488. Young ladies, when you grow up, you don't have a role.

  489. That is inferior. You just have a different one

  490. that's all and you're not inferior.

  491. And any way shape, or form, in fact, you realize, how valuable

  492. you are. I'm going to tell you right now,

  493. man. Can't do anything to their

  494. maximum capacity without the right woman in their Corner.

  495. Can't happen. You know the old saying behind

  496. every good man is a good woman. Oh, that is so true.

  497. So true. So we need to raise our

  498. daughters, to be those kind of women.

  499. Let it be the inner part of the heart that attracts others.

  500. And not only did Peter say you can win your unbelieving spouse

  501. or even. That's the kind of person that

  502. you'll attract one day for you. As you are the right woman, that

  503. godly woman in your own, I'm finished this morning.

  504. Thank you for your kind listening, to what we had to

  505. consider. And I hope something was said,

  506. that was edifying to you in some way.

  507. Encouraging to you in some way. Way a Godly wife and mother.
