  1. As has been already mentioned, we're thankful for the presence

  2. of all of you and I am honored to be your speaker for just a

  3. few minutes this morning. I can't dive into a topic.

  4. Very deep or build a thought for very long when our sermons are

  5. going to be 10 or 15 minutes long.

  6. But I want to just talk about a subject that is often discussed

  7. in the world and that is are you spiritual religious or both?

  8. Maybe you've heard people say this.

  9. I have in my life where somebody might say, I'm not religious,

  10. I'm just spiritual. Well, the question is, is it

  11. possible according to the word of God to be spiritual and not

  12. be religious? Are these Concepts found in the

  13. word of God. And what does all that mean?

  14. Well, first of all the mindset basically that says, I'm

  15. spiritual, I'm not religious. What people are saying, is this,

  16. everything that is relating to religious practice, or organized

  17. religion would be considered religious and Everything that is

  18. associated with the mind or the attitude, or the behavior is

  19. dealing with the spiritual. So here's the mindset.

  20. As long as I am preparing my mind and my mind is right on the

  21. inside. I don't have to be part of any

  22. religious organization at all. I don't have to be a part of

  23. organized religion. Maybe you've also heard this

  24. where somebody might say, I believe in God.

  25. I'm a Believer in God but I don't believe in any kind of

  26. organized religion. Well, here's the point that I

  27. want to make. We want to notice, is it

  28. possible truly to be spiritual and not religious?

  29. Well, first of all, I want to ask two questions.

  30. Is this a distinction that ought to be made?

  31. Should we be making a distinction between spiritual

  32. and religious? And secondly is God.

  33. Happy with such a distinction? Well, first of all, let's talk

  34. about the definition of spiritual according to the

  35. American Heritage dictionary and there are four different

  36. definitions interesting. I thought especially number for

  37. just a minute but here is how the dictionary defined spiritual

  38. Relating to consisting of or having the nature of spirit.

  39. It is something not tangible or material second definition.

  40. It is concerned with or that, which is affecting the soul.

  41. Number three, it is from or relating to God.

  42. But then we get into number 4, and it says belonging to a

  43. church or religion. It is that which is sacred And

  44. you know what's interesting about this sometimes spiritual

  45. and the definition of spiritual and religious are

  46. interchangeable. In fact, this is the definition

  47. of what it means to be religious, you belong to a body,

  48. you belong to a religious organization.

  49. Now it's also the same definition definition number

  50. four, for the word spiritual they run hand-in-hand.

  51. So I think that there are similarities and for good

  52. reason. One scholar said it this way, he

  53. said the reason that they're used interchangeably and there

  54. are similarities is because there are some things that are

  55. spiritual that are religious and things that are religious and

  56. also spiritual we're going to get more into that in just a

  57. minute. So those that set up a contrast

  58. between spiritual and religious have a special definition for

  59. each Here's the special definition for Spiritual.

  60. They mean, specifically, religious Behavior relating to

  61. the mind like meditation. Like prayer like devotion.

  62. Let me ask you this. If meditation bad?

  63. No, the Bible says meditate on these things meditation is

  64. wonderful. If you're having a problem with

  65. your thinking in your mindset, you have to rid yourself of all

  66. the negative stuff. How do you do it by focusing on,

  67. or meditating on that? Which is good, that which is,

  68. lovely, and on, and so on, and so forth of good report.

  69. And when the Bible says think, on these things, it means

  70. meditate. So, meditates a great thing,

  71. What about this prayer prayer is part of our life.

  72. It is everything that we do. And by the way, if the only time

  73. you pray is, when you pray for your food or you pray at night,

  74. you're probably not praying enough.

  75. Your prayer life should be that, which incorporates all that you

  76. do. What about devotion?

  77. Absolutely, but the special definition for those that are

  78. Advocates of spirituality without religion, say it is

  79. this. It is meditation.

  80. It is prayer. And it's devotion.

  81. Only, here's the special definition that they give when

  82. they make a distinction between the two for the word religious,

  83. they mean behavior that is associated with activities of

  84. religion such as forms of worship and also Church

  85. attendance, you know, I'll tell you I heard a guy say one time

  86. about spirituality and about being a spiritual person and he

  87. said it's better. And he quoted some author.

  88. He said it's better to be like I am spiritually or be spiritual

  89. he said, because it's better to be in the mountains.

  90. It's better to be in the mountains thinking about God

  91. than it is to be in a church building.

  92. Thinking about the mountains. Now, when we come together in

  93. the church building, we don't think about the mountains at

  94. It's true and we assemble his worship, we don't think about

  95. the mountains, and that's true, but the concept was this.

  96. I can have, I can be spiritual without worship and without

  97. attendance and without having a religious bond with anybody

  98. else, okay? So is there really a distinction

  99. between spiritual and religious? There is a distinction.

  100. It is much as there's a difference between the inward

  101. person, or the spirit and the activities of the Out were

  102. person, that is the body. Let's give some Bible for that.

  103. In 2nd Corinthians chapter 4 and verse 16, where for we faint

  104. not. But though our outward man is

  105. decaying yet, our inward man is being renewed day by day.

  106. So there's a difference. There's a distinction between

  107. the outer man and the inner man in our worship though.

  108. There's also a distinction, Jesus talked about worship as

  109. being in spirit and in truth, when Jesus was there, And the

  110. woman at the well Jesus said, God is a spirit and those that

  111. worship Him must worship him. We're going to get more to this

  112. at the end to in spirit and in truth I want to make this point.

  113. Please get this. It is not good enough to

  114. robotically, go through the mechanics of worship.

  115. We need to put our whole Spirit our whole heart behind it.

  116. In fact, when the Bible talks about from the deepest part of

  117. our heart or the bowels of our heart, it's talking about the

  118. deepest part of emotion. So what do we do?

  119. It has to be in truth. That is right but it also has to

  120. be in spirit. It has to come from the heart.

  121. It has to be the right motive behind it.

  122. All Another word spiritual is in spirit religious is the part

  123. that's in truth. So yes, there's a distinction

  124. between the two words. However, The biblical

  125. distinction between these two concepts is not nearly as great

  126. as some might think it is. So instead of promoting the idea

  127. that you can have one without the other, the Bible teaches the

  128. opposite being religious is dependent on being spiritual and

  129. being spiritual is dependent upon being religious.

  130. Let's look at an example. In the Book of James James

    James 1 chapter mention

  131. chapter 1 and verse, 26, and 27. James says, if anyone thinks

  132. he's religious If anyone thinks he's religious and does not

  133. Bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one's

  134. religion is useless. Pure and undefiled religion

  135. before God. And the father is this to visit

  136. the orphans and widows in their trouble and to keep oneself

  137. unspotted, from the world. Now we might think that

  138. controlling our speech, controlling our tongue is a

  139. spiritual thing. And James says, it's religious.

  140. We might think visiting orphans and so forth and widows is an

  141. activity that we might consider spiritual because it's not

  142. worship and yet James calls it. Pure religion.

  143. Now, the point is, this, you can't be religious without being

  144. spiritual. You can't the opposite.

  145. True is true as well. You can't be spiritual without

  146. being religious, it goes both ways.

  147. Galatians chapter 6. Notice what Paul says here, he

    Galatians 6 chapter mention

  148. said Brethren. If any man is overtaken in any

  149. trespass. You that are spiritual.

  150. Now first of all, who are they who who are the people that are

  151. spiritual some person that's reached a higher level of

  152. perfection know some person that's reached a higher level of

  153. spirituality know whose it talking about.

  154. It's talking about a faithful Christian.

  155. Someone that is walking by the dictates of the spirit, Guided

  156. by the word of God. Not a perfect person because

  157. there is no such thing. What it's talking about is if Is

  158. overtaken in a trespass. Somebody has to come to the

  159. rescue, who's the person that which is spiritual a Christian,

  160. has to come to the rescue. And restore such an one in the

  161. spirit of gentleness considering yourself.

  162. Lest you also be tempted, that's a very powerful Passage.

  163. When you go to try to help somebody interestingly, the word

  164. restore means mend that which is broken and sometimes were

  165. unsuccessful in doing that. But we need to try to do our

  166. best to do that. And the one that is spiritual

  167. goes and tries to restore such an one to mend that which is

  168. broken, but do it in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself

  169. two things. One don't act like it can never

  170. happen to you. Don't ever act like it could

  171. never happen to you. That's number one.

  172. Number two, don't be tempted into thinking that it could

  173. never happen to you, therefore, you've never done anything that

  174. bad. You would never do what this

  175. person did and Elevate yourself with a haughty Spirit, don't do

  176. that. Lest you also be tempted?

  177. I'm going to taste something anybody can fall.

  178. So do so with the spirit of gentleness consider yourself,

  179. lest you also be tempted but what about this?

  180. Bear one another's burdens. You know, one of the most

  181. powerful things that we have is each other.

  182. And it is true. It is true.

  183. That we bear one another's. Burdens in the word burdens

  184. means heavy. Loads, or heavy weights.

  185. That are hard to bear or carry. That's true.

  186. And it is true that in a general sense.

  187. A Christian principle is to be there for each other and help

  188. each other get through stuff. That is true.

  189. But the context of this passage is specific and not General,

  190. it's talking about heavy burdens that cause your brother, or your

  191. sister to sin. That's what it's talking about.

  192. Help them through that. And really, that's exactly what

  193. the Bible is talking about. When it it says confess your

  194. trespasses or your sins to each other and pray one for another

  195. that you may be healed, the effective fervent prayer of a

  196. righteous man avails much. In other words have helped in

  197. getting through those times and struggles that we go through

  198. that our burdens that are lead us to sin and help each other in

  199. that. And the Bible says, you fulfill

  200. the law of Christ. So helping people that go astray

  201. is a religious thing Helping each other.

  202. Those that are spiritual. Do a religious thing.

  203. Bearing one another's. Burdens is fulfilling the law of

  204. Christ, which is the law of love.

  205. One more idea of though in First Peter chapter 2 and verse 5.

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  206. The church is a spiritual Institution.

  207. In First Peter 2 and 5. You also as living stones are

  208. built up a spiritual house. So we're talking about that

  209. which is religious. We're talking about organized

  210. religion. We're talking about the church,

  211. the body of Christ. What does Peter say?

  212. It is a spiritual house. What are we doing the spiritual

  213. house? Where a holy priesthood and we

  214. offer up spiritual sacrifices, they go hand-in-hand.

  215. In our service to God worshiping.

  216. God involves our self in religious activities.

  217. You cannot be spiritual without being religious as well going

  218. back to John chapter 4 and verse 24.

    John 4 chapter mention

  219. Once More Jesus said, God is a spirit and they that worship Him

  220. must worship Him in spirit. And in truth, the idea of in

  221. spirit is the very idea of being spiritual and in truth is

  222. talking about religious. SLI another words.

  223. What the internal is here manifest itself in the external

  224. and we talked about the heart, right?

  225. People struggle with things in their life, it's because they

  226. don't fix it on the inside. Everything is about that.

  227. It's about the inside and the outside, and they go together

  228. the internals and the externals and they're both there.

  229. What does God want them in? Conclusion.

  230. God wants us to be both spiritual.

  231. And also religious do you know why?

  232. Because you can't be one without the other.

  233. Now I want to just say one final thing.

  234. Sometimes people that profess Christianity.

  235. Hurt the cause of Christ because they're not spiritual.

  236. What I mean by that, is this, sometimes people profess

  237. religious things or they call themself a religious person or

  238. they're a part of some religious affiliation but their life is

  239. not demonstrated in that they don't profess that at all.

  240. I'm going to give you one example years ago.

  241. There was a general contractor and he told me this he said any

  242. time that somebody as subcontractor has on their

  243. business card. Anything at all that resembles

  244. that there are He said I take that business card and I throw

  245. it in the trash and I said, why he says, because everyone that I

  246. have dealt with that professes to be religious.

  247. Has been untruthful has lied and has not been what they said that

  248. they were. That's the damage that happens

  249. when our life does not manifest. What we profess to be, we are

  250. religious people members of the body of Christ, but we also live

  251. a spiritual life and we demonstrate our spirituality in

  252. the things in which we do every day.

  253. God wants us to be both. Both spiritual and religious.

  254. I'm through this morning. I hope that something was said

  255. in this little short little lesson about the subject.

  256. If somebody asked the question, are you spiritual religious?

  257. You say I'm both because it takes both and they go together

  258. and you can't have one without the other We thank you for
