  1. Good morning and it's wonderful to be with you today.

  2. It's an honor for me to be invited to come and to stand

  3. before you and to speak for you today.

  4. And to open the word of God, I have never been here before.

  5. This is my first time, so it's a, it's a delight.

  6. It is an honor, it's a joy. And I've anticipated this look

  7. forward to this for some time, glad to have my wife and one of

  8. my daughters with me and then When a young man who is aspiring

  9. to be an evangelist named Darcy with with us today and, of

  10. course, those of you who may not know me, my name is Jimmy cating

  11. and I am working with the congregation in Oakdale

  12. California. My my family and I we moved here

  13. about two years ago to California from the big state of

  14. Texas. And before that we lived in

  15. Oklahoma, And we live there worked with the church there.

  16. For three years, then we worked with the church in Texas for 17

  17. years. Where pennies brother goes to

  18. church David Tate and so had wonderful, wonderful

  19. opportunities. And this is a, this is a great

  20. blessing to be here. We love California.

  21. Actually, we've enjoyed the work and we are thankful for the

  22. foundation. That has been laid before we got

  23. here, much, thanks goes to brother Frank and the work that

  24. he has done with the leadership there at Oakdale.

  25. So I'm humbled to be here. I'm thankful, I'm grateful to be

  26. here and anytime I'm invited to speak to someone about the

  27. gospel of Christ. That is the greatest blessing.

  28. There is that is the, the joy of my life and I hope and I pray

  29. that that I will never take that for granted.

  30. This morning to introduce our thoughts.

  31. As you can see on the screen, I'd like to take our reading

  32. from John chapter 5. When a read beginning at verse

    John 5 chapter mention

  33. 1, an incident that occurred in the life of Jesus, that is

  34. really profound powerful. After this, there was a feast of

  35. the Jews and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

  36. Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep gate, a pool, which is

  37. called in Hebrew, Bethesda having five, porches in these

  38. lay a great multitude of sick. People blind lame paralyzed,

  39. waiting for the moving of the water for an angel, went down at

  40. a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water.

  41. Then whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water

  42. was made well of whatever disease he had.

  43. Now, a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty eight

  44. years. When Jesus saw him lying there

  45. and knew that he had already been in that condition a long

  46. time, he said to him, do you want to be made?

  47. Well, the sick man, answered him, sir.

  48. I have no one, no man to put me into the pool when the water is

  49. stirred up. But while I am coming another

  50. steps down before me. And Jesus said to him, rise,

  51. take up your bed and walk and immediately the man was made.

  52. Well took up his bed and walked and that day was the Sabbath.

  53. Wow. What a what a great record of an

  54. amazing miracle. That was performed on a man,

  55. that was in a condition. For a long, long time.

  56. So this morning, I want to talk about this story and make some

  57. application in the less. It'll be years before we go into

  58. it any further though. We want to pause to pray many on

  59. our hearts no doubt and then our minds that need our prayers.

  60. So let us humble in some fashion while we pray together, it's too

  61. late. It's too late.

  62. It's too late. No doubt that is one of Satan's

  63. most effective tools. It is one of the most

  64. destructive lies. In fact, the longer you believe

  65. it, the truer, it seems to be The phrase it is too.

  66. Late has been declared by the doubtful and the despondent.

  67. It is said by the couple who have been married for years but

  68. they're having problems. And they come to a crossroad.

  69. And they have what seemed to be insurmountable issues.

  70. But instead of getting help, instead of getting Council, they

  71. had for divorce saying it's too late.

  72. Two grown adults, sisters. Who haven't spoken to each other

  73. in years. They carefully arrange their

  74. schedules and coordinate their schedules.

  75. While their mother is in a hospice care as to avoid talking

  76. to each other. And reconciling with one

  77. another. And if you were to ask them, why

  78. don't you talk? Why don't you reconcile?

  79. Let's say it's too late. Too much hurt, too much time.

  80. A 19 year old young man. Struggling with a serious

  81. addiction. He's given up.

  82. When he's encouraged to talk to someone who has actually

  83. overcome the same problem, he will say, it's too late for me,

  84. 19 years old. It's too late.

  85. That's the response of many who have reflected upon a life of

  86. neglect of rebellion who are now over, calm and overwhelmed with

  87. guilt. And shame because of their sins

  88. but they feel like it is too late to do anything about it.

  89. And so, this lie, it is too late.

  90. It is resounded Into The Echoes of the heart and the mind.

  91. And it it creates a helpless hopeless, condition and

  92. perspective. The kids are too old.

  93. The marriage is too cold. And our friend is too angry, the

  94. debt is too overwhelming. The addiction is too powerful,

  95. the reputation. It is to shot the sin, it's too

  96. great. It's too late, and that's a lie.

  97. And that's a lie that the word of God is sharp enough to cut

  98. through. That is a lie that the word of

  99. God is bright enough to penetrate the darkness of every

  100. hopeless condition. The message of Jesus Christ is

  101. that it is not too late. It is not too late to start

  102. over, it is not too late to make a difference.

  103. It is not too late to say, I'm sorry to ask for help.

  104. It is not too late to be forgiven.

  105. And for the sins to be forgotten.

  106. It's not. Too late.

  107. Well, in John chapter 5, Jesus encounters.

    John 5 chapter mention

  108. A man who is in a situation that no doubt, he thought was too

  109. late to change. He Jesus entering Jerusalem

  110. arrives at a pool called Bethesda.

  111. And this is where a multitude of sick people would lay around and

  112. wait in the hopes of healing blind.

  113. Lame paralyzed. John adds that they were waiting

  114. for the moving of the water. For an angel.

  115. Would come down at a certain time into the pool and stirred

  116. up the water. This is a an intriguing.

  117. Here in the text to me it seems like there is good reason to

  118. believe that John is actually inserting these words to merely

  119. explain a local Superstition or an expectation.

  120. John is letting us understand the mindset of the multitude and

  121. thus this is merely an explanation of a local belief

  122. that these Waters of Bethesda actually had Healing power.

  123. Some believe that they did some believe it was.

  124. Merely a Superstition Kaufman comments that if there had been

  125. any virtue in the waters of the pool, it seems highly incredible

  126. that they should have been efficacious only at

  127. indeterminate intervals only for such a short while and even then

  128. only for the person who got into them first.

  129. That seems to make sense to me. How would a?

  130. Holy and loving and fair God, would he would allow such a cure

  131. only for the first one in and having a group of disabled

  132. people to rush and push and make their way that seems a little

  133. unfair, a little dis organized, a little uncompassionate, but

  134. whatever the case is, Regarding what this actually meant.

  135. This was a place where people would go to find, help find

  136. Hope. Believing that they could get

  137. help. But in John 5, in verse 5, we

  138. have this insertion as well. Now, a certain man was there who

  139. had had an infirmity for 38 years, that's a long time. 38

  140. years, just look at your life, maybe you're not 38 years yet,

  141. maybe you are. But regardless of how young or

  142. how old you are 38 years, that's a long time, 38 years that's

  143. nearly 14,000 days, 14,000 days that have come and gone and

  144. things haven't changed very much at all for this man.

  145. He had this problem and he was in that situation for 14,000

  146. Days and I'm not sure exactly when it happened.

  147. But after enough days and weeks and months and years Eventually,

  148. he would lose optimism. He would become pessimistic.

  149. That, anything would ever change?

  150. but what's surprising to me is that regardless of his

  151. pessimism, he is still at the well, he is still at the pool,

  152. he is still there holding on Regardless of the fact that he

  153. had been there for so long. And whenever there is a thread

  154. of hope, there's always a chance to Build a Bridge of Faith and

  155. this man is going to experience. Even though he had been 38 years

  156. in this condition, on this day, it's going to be different

  157. because on this day, Jesus is going to pass by.

  158. And Friends whenever Jesus passes by, it can make a

  159. difference. It can make a world of

  160. difference. It can change everything, does

  161. it always but it most certainly can And in verse 6, Jesus when

  162. he saw him lying there and knew that he had already been in that

  163. condition a long time, he said to him, do you want to get well

  164. now that is probably one of the most intriguing questions we can

  165. read from the lips of Jesus. Do you want to get well, what

  166. kind of question is that? Because it doesn't it seem a

  167. little unnecessary. Why, why in the world would a

  168. man who is lame be at a pool of healing?

  169. Don't you want to get? Well, isn't it obvious?

  170. The question seems fairly unnecessary.

  171. But this question is far from it.

  172. In fact, this is the common methodology that Jesus utilizes

  173. in his approach with people in Mark, chapter 10 and verse 51.

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  174. He says to a blind, man. What can I do for you?

  175. Isn't that obvious? And now he says to a sick, man.

  176. Do you want to get well? Unnecessary.

  177. Not at all. And the longer I live in the

  178. more, I preach, the more I can see the wisdom in that question.

  179. Because here's what I've learned that Jesus already knew.

  180. There's a lot of people who like hanging around the pool, but

  181. they don't really want to get better.

  182. There's a lot of people who want to go to church.

  183. But they don't want to change. There's a lot of people who

  184. don't mind opening up their Bibles reading, it makes them

  185. feel good. They even like to listen to

  186. sermons, but they're not interested in doing anything

  187. different. There's a lot of people who like

  188. the lifestyle, but they don't really want to change theirs.

  189. And so do you want to get well? Is a very important question,

  190. because Jesus knew that a person who doesn't want, help can't be

  191. helped. Now, that seems cold and

  192. calloused, but that's really the truth.

  193. And there's nothing. That a preacher can do.

  194. There's nothing that a family member can do.

  195. There's nothing the church can do.

  196. And yay, even Jesus. There's nothing that Jesus can

  197. do if a person doesn't want. To get well.

  198. But that raises the question. Why wouldn't anyone?

  199. Why wouldn't everyone in such a sickening?

  200. Sad State want to be made? Well, why is this question

  201. necessary? Well, let me give you a couple

  202. of possibilities. This question is necessary

  203. because we can live in such a situation for so long that we

  204. began to deny the reality or we began to unknown, we begin to

  205. not notice. the seriousness of the situation that we're in, I

  206. suppose this is probably the case for a man that had been

  207. sick for 38 years denying, the seriousness of the situation

  208. after that long of time, it is likely that he lost sight of

  209. what life could be like what life could actually feel like if

  210. he were better after all, he was surrounded day after day, by

  211. people who were sick and in difficult circumstances and this

  212. became his All this, became his life.

  213. This became his identity. and when something becomes normal,

  214. and something becomes your life and your identity, Well, it's

  215. kind of difficult to see things the way it ought to be and the

  216. nature of sin. Can cause us. to be lulled into

  217. a sense of comfort, a new normal, a situation that we

  218. don't necessarily like but We're used to it.

  219. And it can deceive us and Lowell us into a false sense of

  220. security. The Hebrew writer would tell us

  221. in Chapter 13 and verse 13 of chapter 3, brother, verse 13, it

  222. speaks of the deceitfulness of sin.

  223. We grow accustomed to it, we settle with it.

  224. I saw a documentary one time. I think it was on The Learning

  225. Channel, maybe the History Channel, one of those

  226. documentary channels and it was Commuting.

  227. A man who had a 600 pound tumor? I think about that.

  228. And how he was going to have that removed now.

  229. It was not just documenting the tumor itself, of course but the

  230. psychology of the man who allowed it to get so bad and of

  231. course, He thought in the beginning, initially, it was

  232. something that could be contained and if he would just

  233. leave it alone, it would just take care of itself and we know

  234. that's the way it can be with us.

  235. We can be like that with our own problems.

  236. If we just ignore it, maybe leave it alone, maybe it will

  237. just stay where it is and time, will take care of it.

  238. Let's wait and see if it'll get better.

  239. But All time does is allow the tumor to grow bigger in our

  240. homes, or even in our hearts. And by the time, the man

  241. realized that it was not going to take care of itself, he had

  242. reached the point that he was too embarrassed by, how bad he

  243. let things become. And so, he was afraid to ask for

  244. help because he was ashamed that other people.

  245. Would see how bad it was. And He just couldn't get past

  246. the shame. That's true for a lot of us as

  247. well. We don't want people to know how

  248. bad the tumor is in our lives. It's much easier to buy into the

  249. lie that it's too late than to admit.

  250. That that things have become so bad.

  251. It's much easier to say it's too late than to tell a friend about

  252. your struggle. It's a lot easier to say it's

  253. too late than to try to reconcile a relationship because

  254. that's work and it can get awkward.

  255. It's a lot easier to say it's too late than to humble yourself

  256. and to get the help that you might need for a drug problem,

  257. or alcohol addiction, or a pornography problem, or a

  258. gambling habit. You know, we can become so

  259. ashamed of how our condition has grown out of control that we

  260. just allow it to become our new normal instead of reaching out

  261. and seeking help. We just are in denial of the

  262. reality of what is and we stop thinking of what can be.

  263. It's a lot easier to say, I will.

  264. I can never change things. Can never be better or I could

  265. never be forgiven. Then to take the difficult steps

  266. necessary. For repentance.

  267. So, do you want to get well, that is a question, isn't it?

  268. For all of us to ask necessary because not everyone does.

  269. Because they deny the reality of their situation.

  270. Here's another reason why that question is necessary for many

  271. and most of us is because we don't really want to change

  272. because we're afraid of it, we're afraid to change.

  273. We're afraid because change is painful.

  274. Jesus taught us in John 3, and verse 24.

  275. Everyone practicing, evil hates the light and does not come to

  276. the light. Lest his deeds should be

  277. exposed. And he compares the truth of his

  278. word. The saving transforming power of

  279. the Gospel to a light in the darkness and we understand what

  280. that does, how painful that can be.

  281. If you were a teenager, especially a teenager, you

  282. understand your sleep in the dark room and somebody flips the

  283. light on, you don't like it. You went you squit, you throw

  284. the blanket over your face. You may even yell turn it off

  285. because light Painful to the eyes when they have grown

  286. accustomed. To the dark.

  287. And yet in our own lives and in our own sinful practice.

  288. In our darkness, when others try even if they are in the most

  289. humble and loving in their approach.

  290. We don't much appreciate because it rubs us the wrong way.

  291. It challenges us. It is all up in our business and

  292. we don't like that. Do we?

  293. One man said, we can easily forgive a child who is afraid of

  294. the dark. The real tragedy of life is when

  295. men are afraid of the light. Change.

  296. Is painful. Earl Nightingale wrote, you will

  297. remain the same until the pain of remaining the same becomes

  298. greater than the pain of change. You know what though changes

  299. also risky. It's risky.

  300. Because in our normal and in our comfort zones, we know what to

  301. expect. We know what the expectations

  302. are and so it can be risky when we change, when we make the

  303. steps to change our lives or to do better.

  304. There's a lot of benefits to being by the edge of the pool.

  305. So we don't change. There's comfort in the status

  306. quo, do you know of somebody who when they get sick?

  307. They kind of like it the kind of enjoy it.

  308. Oh, not that. They like being sick but they

  309. kind of like the perks that come with the pool.

  310. They like the low expectations. They like the attention, the

  311. sympathy not having to try so hard and when it comes to our

  312. spiritual health, so many of us settle You know, it's not ideal.

  313. You know, it's not the way that you should stay for very long

  314. and you're comfortable though and you remain in that situation

  315. because it takes too much risk to do anything differently.

  316. But Jesus asked the man, do you want to get well, and I want you

  317. to notice his response. Sir.

  318. I have no one. I have no man to put me into the

  319. pool when the water is stirred up.

  320. But while I am coming another steps down before me.

  321. He doesn't answer the question with a yes or a no.

  322. He answers the question with I can't.

  323. I can't do you want to get well? And he immediately begins to

  324. explain the excuses as to why he can't get well.

  325. In a book written by doctors Frank minnerath than Paul Meyer.

  326. Entitled happiness is a choice. They make this observation I

  327. thought was interesting to me I'll share it with you. a

  328. psychiatrist we cringe when Christian patients used the

  329. words I can't and I tried Any good psychiatrist knows that I

  330. can't. And I've tried are merely lame

  331. excuses. We insist that our patients.

  332. Stop saying can't, and say, won't instead now, it's so

  333. evidently when somebody comes into their office and they need

  334. some help and they say, I can't get along with my wife, they

  335. make them rephrase that, and they have to say I won't get

  336. along with my wife. I can't break this Habit to I

  337. won't break this habit. I can't get my spending under

  338. control to. I won't get my spending under

  339. control and they have learned that if you can get people to

  340. the point to where they changed their cats to wants, they stop

  341. making excuses and they stop start taking some action.

  342. They look at their problem in a different way.

  343. And for some of us, that is the problem.

  344. We just say, I can't. But the reality is, we won't.

  345. something I've noticed about myself and I kind of made this

  346. observation about other people as well.

  347. You can correct me if I'm wrong, it may be your observation to,

  348. but people will do. What they really want to do.

  349. They really want to they'll do it.

  350. They'll find a way. If there is a will there is a

  351. way they'll find a way to do it. That's the way it is in a lots

  352. of things in life in general, but certainly when it comes to

  353. our spiritual health and our spiritual lives, we will do what

  354. we want to do, when we see when we're motivated.

  355. And when we are inspired, To change.

  356. Now, here's the problem with this man, though he says, I

  357. can't and, you know what? He can't.

  358. He really couldn't get to the pool by himself and nobody was

  359. there to help him. Until Jesus came.

  360. And when I look at this story, I look at it as a microcosm of the

  361. Gospel itself. It is a situation that we all

  362. face. In reality.

  363. We had a crippling and debilitating problem called sin,

  364. that we couldn't fix on our own, and no one could help us until

  365. Jesus. And First Corinthians chapter 1

    1 Corinthians 1:18–20

  366. verses 18 through 20 60, not read that whole section.

  367. But you'll see where Paul talks about.

  368. How that, not many wise, not many noble, not many mighty are

  369. called By the gospel, they all hear the same gospel, but not

  370. all respond to it. Who don't respond, the Mighty

  371. the noble, the wise, why don't the mighty Noble and wise

  372. respond to the gospel? Those educated folks that know

  373. more than those who are on the other side of the tracks?

  374. Why, why don't they? Because they're too busy

  375. getting. To the pool on their own or

  376. those that. Don't even think they need the

  377. pool. The message of the Gospel, the

  378. message of the Cross? Yes, it's perishing to those who

  379. are or it is a foolishness rather to those who are

  380. perishing, but it is the power of God to those who are saved.

  381. The gospel will only save those who are humble enough to admit

  382. that they are lost and they can't do it on their own.

  383. There are people who will never obey the gospel because they

  384. will not acknowledge. They need the gospel.

  385. The reason it is good news is because there's bad news and

  386. most people don't really appreciate or are aware of the

  387. bad news that there are lost and they'd be separated eternally

  388. from God. If they died in such a Tate.

  389. And there's nothing. They could have done, they

  390. could, there's nothing they could do to fix their problem

  391. separate and apart from a holy pure atoning, sacrifice that God

  392. would make for them through his son, the Lamb of God. and so,

  393. This man acknowledges, his need. And he learns that with Jesus.

  394. It's not too late. And Jesus after he brushes aside

  395. all of the excuses that he is made he basically is standing

  396. before this man to say, I am your answer.

  397. I can tell you what you need to do it.

  398. Here's what it is. Rise up, take up and walk.

  399. He doesn't just leave the man. But he gives the man, something

  400. to do something that would require.

  401. Yes, trust and faith in an attempt to do exactly as Jesus

  402. said, and after 38 years, after nothing had changed all this

  403. time. This man's life.

  404. Changed and he met Jesus, he learned that it was not too

  405. late. To get up, take up and walk.

  406. For the woman of John 8, who was caught in adultery, she had

  407. learned that it was not too late for Jesus said, neither do I

  408. condemn, you go and sin? No more.

  409. For Simon Peter, who denied the Lord three times and in his

  410. shame weeping bitterly, no doubt thought.

  411. How could I ever regain my footing?

  412. How could I ever be restored? How could I ever regain the

  413. trust of the Lord? And yet the Lord reaffirms gives

  414. Peter the the opportunity to reaffirm his love when he said

  415. feed my sheep. And for Saul of Tarsus who

  416. Persecuted innocent Christians can sending at their deaths.

  417. He learned that even for him, it was not too late.

  418. For he was told to arise and be baptized and wash away your

  419. sins, calling on the name of the Lord and maybe you need to learn

  420. it to maybe that's the case with you.

  421. You don't have to settle you don't have to be put into that

  422. box of identity of who you've always been.

  423. You don't have to, you don't have to be that way.

  424. You don't have to live that way. You don't have to let the past

  425. Define you. But the question is, do you want

  426. to get well? John 14 of in John 5:14

    John 5:14

  427. afterwards, Jesus found him in the temple and he said to him,

  428. see you have been made. Well sin, no more.

  429. Lest a worse thing come upon you.

  430. Jesus is telling him you've been healed physically.

  431. There's something more important.

  432. And there's something worse than physical.

  433. Problems and physical sickness. He says, you need to make sure

  434. you don't sin. Lest a worse thing come upon you

  435. this morning as we look at this concept, I don't, I don't want

  436. to leave the impression that it's it's never too late.

  437. Because it is. The Bible teaches us that we are

  438. to number. Our days, ask God, teach us to

  439. number our understand that we have limited opportunity,

  440. limited time. Psalm 139 verse for the Lord

  441. make me to know my end and what is the measure of my days that I

  442. may know how frail I am. It's good for us to understand

  443. that we have the precious gift of time, but it's also equally

  444. important for us to know that time is precious because it is

  445. limited. It is not going to stay and it's

  446. not going to last Forever. We see it.

  447. Jesus teaches that. Parable in Luke 16.

  448. The rich man and Lazarus. Where this man had lived, his

  449. life fairing sumptuously every day.

  450. Whining, whining himself and dining himself and everything

  451. that he needed, everything that he wanted and the Comforts of

  452. his mansion. And then he dies.

  453. And he ends up in torment. And he sees the beggar who had

  454. laid at his gate beg who had begged day in day out for the

  455. crumbs, that would fall from his table, and he sees him in

  456. Paradise, Abraham's bosom. And now, the tables of God's

  457. justice have turned. And instead of the beggar,

  458. Desiring a crumb. Now the rich man begs for a drop

  459. of water off the tip of another man's finger.

  460. He can't get it. Father Abraham said, Son

  461. remember that in your lifetime, you received good things,

  462. likewise Lazarus evil things, but he now is comforted and you

  463. are tormented and besides this between us and you there is a

  464. great Gulf fixed. It is a separation.

  465. It is not just a separation but it is a permanent stable fixed

  466. deep. Eternally settled separation, it

  467. is too deep to be filled. It is too wide to be crossed.

  468. It is fixed. It is unalterable in its nature.

  469. Those who are here. Cannot go to there and those who

  470. were there. Cannot go to here.

  471. There is no hope. And once we end up there, it is

  472. too late. That's the message.

  473. It's too late. There's no hope of ever getting

  474. out. now today, It's not too late. but what we do with the

  475. time and what how we make the most of it, Is up to us.

  476. It's not too late, is it until it's too late.

  477. And maybe you're here this morning and you're not yet A

  478. child of God, maybe you have been sitting in your denial.

  479. Maybe you have been just then content.

  480. To stay where you are afraid to change to take the risk.

  481. To do anything different. Maybe you haven't grown like you

  482. need to maybe you are a Christian but you haven't grown

  483. like you need to. You haven't haven't matured like

  484. you anything. Well, Nothing's Gonna Change.

  485. Nothing's ever going to change for me.

  486. Well, it's up to what you want and what you make of it.

  487. The one who can change you is standing before you asking you.

  488. Do you want to get well? And it's up to you and he says

  489. Rise Up. Take up.

  490. And walk. And if you've never obeyed the

  491. Gospel of Jesus Christ, what don't you do?

  492. That today, come believing in him repenting of your sins,

  493. confessing your faith and be baptized to have your sins

  494. washed away and you'll have the opportunity to go on your way

  495. rejoicing, not healed, from a physical infirmity, but that

  496. which is going to cause you to be eternally separated from God,

  497. taken away, forgiven, and wiped out, blot it out, and remember

  498. it again. You know, more.

  499. And if we can assist you, if you've never taken that step,

  500. what are you waiting on? I don't know the audience.
