  1. Welcome back this afternoon and sorry to throw things off.

  2. Y'all have rearranged things to listen to me again.

  3. What were you thinking? But what I want to do is talk

  4. about seeing this afternoon is specifically Take a look at what

  5. the early church did. Why do we practice what?

  6. We do kind of, it will take a look at internal evidence

  7. external evidence of what the church did for singing, you

  8. know, God he is blessed us with the gift of song, and we've been

  9. blessed to be able to sing just in general, but we've done it

  10. today and are worshipped and unto him when we come to

  11. singing. There are some that are better

  12. at it at others, but it's still a gift.

  13. It's a gift from God. And as such, we've been singing

  14. through the years about all kinds of things.

  15. We've been singing when we've been happy, we've been singing

  16. when we've been sad, singing, tell story.

  17. And it expresses joy to express his sorrow and expresses love.

  18. Expresses praise as we've done today.

  19. And so with this blessing of song, God wants to church, to

  20. use it for his glory and praise and our worship unto him.

  21. And so the purpose of our How do you this afternoon is to examine

  22. how the church use singing in worship.

  23. And as we begin our study of this afternoon, I want to talk

  24. about these new testament scriptures that actually mention

  25. singing and music in the in the New Testament was actually used

  26. on several different occasions. It was a, it was used for

  27. funerals. It was also used for pleasure,

  28. and it was also used for worship depending on Where you read it

  29. with in the scriptures when the New Testament, specifically,

  30. mentions music with instruments, it is actually used 44 times in

  31. the scriptures and ever. And when it's used, 44 times

  32. when referring to instruments, it's either Under the Umbrella

  33. of it being used as it at a funeral or it was used for

  34. pleasure or like a celebration of when instruments were used

  35. when singing. In the New Testament scriptures.

  36. So, for example, you have here in Matthew chapter 9 and verses

    Matthew 9 chapter mention

  37. 18, through 23, there's this, there's this ruler whose

  38. daughter had died and he approached Jesus because he had

  39. faith that Jesus would be able to bring his his daughter back

  40. to life. And so, Jesus went and verse 23,

  41. says, here, when Jesus came into the rulers house and saw the

  42. flute players and The noisy crowd wailing.

  43. And so, we have an example of Music in the New Testament

  44. scriptures. But with instrumental music here

  45. in a setting of being a funeral, there is another example of

  46. music that's used for a joyous occasion told by Jesus.

  47. When he out when he taught the prodigal son, how he came back

  48. home and what happened after that?

  49. Prodigal son came back home, Luke 15. 25 says that there was

  50. music, there was dancing. There was a celebration because

  51. the son came back home and changed his mind for the better.

  52. There are allusions to Heavenly music.

  53. In the New Testament scripture and I'm a little behind but

  54. there's music that allusions to heavily music when it comes to

  55. the New Testament, writing about things.

  56. Like for example, The Book of Revelation there's a trumpet

  57. that is used as a means to kind of signal something within the

  58. book. There are also seven angels and

  59. their seven trumpets. If you're writing notes, write

  60. down Revelation, chapter 8 and verse number 6 and they

    Revelation 8 chapter mention

  61. successively blue on them again, Revelations, 8, and 9, and 10,

  62. and also chapter 11, but in Revelations, 5, and verse number

  63. 8, John sees these 24 elders. And they're falling down before

  64. the Lord and they're each holding a harp.

  65. And along with these seven, bowls of incense.

  66. And we find this in Revelation, 14, beginning of verse, number

  67. 2, and I Heard a Voice from heaven, like the voice of many

  68. Waters and like the voice of loud thunder.

  69. And I heard the sound of harpists playing their Harps.

  70. They sing as it were a new song Before the Throne before the

  71. four living creatures and the elders and one could learn that

  72. song and no man could learn that song except the 144,000 who were

  73. redeemed from. The Earth.

  74. And so we have this picture of this kind of music in heaven as

  75. John season it and as he writes about.

  76. But what I want us to understand it it when we see these

  77. references in the Book of Revelation regarding music and

  78. using instruments, they do not in those references in the Book

  79. of Revelations provide any command or any example or any

  80. necessary inference about. About the church coming together

  81. for worship. We have to understand that key

  82. idea, when we see passages like this, even in the Book of

  83. Revelation. And so, having said that, this

  84. kind of provides a good transition now for us to

  85. consider music specifically what it comes when the church

  86. assembles together for worship and how it is to be used in the

  87. church assembly and don't worry about writing all these down.

  88. Because we're going to look at every single one of these

  89. passages. And every single one, these are

  90. pretty much all I believe in nine references that the New

  91. Testament consists of when it specifically mentions music in a

  92. congregation setting. So, let's begin with the first

  93. one Acts chapter 16. And verse number 25.

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  94. So for this, this is a looking at Paul and Silas were at, but

  95. at midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God

  96. in the prisoners were listening to them.

  97. Now, I will say this, these are two Christians being together.

  98. This is not a worship assembly. But they were in prison.

  99. Yet there found to be singing, hymns to God.

  100. And we have no way of knowing what hems they were singing or

  101. what words, but we do know that their hymns and they're singing

  102. that they were directed to God. We do know that he was the

  103. object of their singing, and they're praying on that night.

  104. Another observation about this particular circumstance that

  105. Paul and Silas were in was that it is ok to sing God outside of

  106. public assembly for worship is absolutely okay.

  107. In fact I greatly encouraged Is that?

  108. With every one of us, you can sing praises to God while you're

  109. driving along in the car, you can sing.

  110. While you're gathered with your family, you can sing.

  111. While you're carrying about at your day, you could kind of do

  112. like me and can break out and and karaoke Tourette's at work.

  113. And have to apologize later on, but it's a you talk about a mood

  114. booster. It really brightens your day

  115. especially when you could sing a spiritual song or praise to God

  116. during your day. It does something for you and I

  117. can imagine it was helping Paul and Silas as they were being

  118. held in prison that night. And so, that's what we know from

  119. acts 16 and verse 25, when it comes to Christians singing,

  120. let's move on to another passage.

  121. And this is found a Romans chapter 15.

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  122. And verse number 9, it says, and that the Gentiles might glorify

  123. God for his Mercy as it is written.

  124. For this reason, I will confess to you.

  125. Among the Gentiles and seeing to your name.

  126. So, in the context that were polish writing or yeah, Paul,

  127. he's expressing that now, there's something major that's

  128. changed now, Jews. And Gentiles have received the

  129. Grace from God and have the ability to sing praises

  130. together. They could do that together.

  131. And so, he actually quotes David here.

  132. But there's this idea of these two groups, Really multiple

  133. people at once singing together. And he actually quote, some

  134. David from Psalm 18 and 49 regarding singing to the name of

  135. God and specifically talking about now, the Gentiles could

  136. join in that action, where before it was only the Jews.

  137. Now, Gentiles had that same privilege of doing just that And

  138. so that's our observation from Romans 15 and verse 9 when it

  139. comes to Christians singing, There's a singing with others.

  140. We now move on to 1st Corinthians chapter 14 of

  141. singing with Christians. And in 1st Corinthians chapter

  142. 14, Paul here was discussing what was to be done in the

  143. church assembly so that there would be attic edification

  144. within the church assembly and absolutely no chaos.

  145. Ever. And so he says this in verse

  146. number 15, he said I will sing with the spirit and I, and I

  147. will also sing with the understanding there's another

  148. thing that he writes later on, in verse number 26, how was it,

  149. then Brethren whenever you come together, each of you has a

  150. song, has a teaching, has a tongue.

  151. Has a revelation has an interpretation but then he says,

  152. let all things be done. Or edification.

  153. I want to notice here that singing involves understanding

  154. what we're singing. That's the first observation

  155. that we see from this passage. So we concentrate on the words

  156. we concentrate on the meaning of the song As we sing it.

  157. Sometimes it's a bit difficult when trying to pick up the words

  158. of the meaning of the song when the song is kind of new.

  159. Because at that time, we're kind of learning how the song goes

  160. notes. Wise, a Melody wise But later

  161. on, naturally will begin to understand the words and the

  162. meaning of the word of that song as we learn more of it.

  163. But at other times, it is possible to sing a song and

  164. completely miss the meaning of what you just saying.

  165. And so music in itself is not enough to glorify God.

  166. But it's the meaning of that song.

  167. That's just as important, there's another thing here

  168. that's mentioned by Paul as We Gather here and that is he Lucid

  169. the fact that the church comes together for worship And as one

  170. congregation, they have the teaching from God's word, they

  171. pray together but they also sing together as a congregation there

  172. at the scriptures. You will never find The Soloist,

  173. you'll never find choirs in a setting of a church assembly

  174. gathered for worship. You won't find that.

  175. Well, that's all we really see from this passage here in 1st

  176. Corinthians, chapter 14, moving on to a couple more versus use

  177. in scripture regarding Christian singing and that is found in

  178. Ephesians chapter 5 and verse 19.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  179. And then we'll consider Colossians 3:16.

    Colossians 3:16

  180. I'm going to kind of group these because the kind of have a

  181. similar meaning and we're going to gather some insights from

  182. these two passages Ephesians 95. 15 519 says speaking to one

  183. another in Psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs singing and

  184. making melody in your heart, to the Lord.

  185. And then Colossians, 3:16 let the word of Christ dwell in you

  186. richly in all wisdom teaching and admonishing.

  187. One, another in Psalms and hymns, and spiritual songs, then

  188. he says singing with Grace, in your hearts to the Lord.

  189. There is the one thing I want to Mentor our kind of notice or

  190. Draw from these two passages is that we are commanded to sing as

  191. a church. church or as a congregation, we are commanded

  192. to sing There's a and there's no out with that.

  193. The passage in Colossians tells us that singing, well, that's a

  194. form of teaching, and it's also a form of admonition.

  195. And so we are to deduce from this that we are not just merely

  196. making musical sounds. When we see a person could no

  197. more be spiritually. Edified by just musical notes

  198. than he can buy. Just the words of a language

  199. that he doesn't understand. And so Paul dealt with this,

  200. actually already, as we've already seen in 1st Corinthians

  201. chapter 14, but Paul said, our music should be such to kind of

  202. create an understanding. On the part of those who are

  203. involved in. So this implies words, not just

  204. sounds within music. And the second thing that I want

  205. to notice here is that we can't just sing anything that we want

  206. to and me and worship. It is limited to what we could

  207. see. Paul mentions weird to sing

  208. Psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.

  209. Now, I looked at all kinds of Scholars and commentators about

  210. if there's a difference between a Psalm and a him, and his

  211. spiritual Psalm some say yes, same some say, no, It would, if

  212. you say yes, if there is a difference, I guess today we

  213. would liken it to in, are some books that we sing from, we have

  214. hymns and then we have songs of the southern gospel kind of

  215. Nature. And we also have songs of like a

  216. contemporary nature kind of those differences.

  217. So if you were to say those are three different things, I guess

  218. you could relate it to that but they all share one thing.

  219. And that one thing is that the songs bring our minds to

  220. spiritual things, like God, and Jesus, and heaven, and love for

  221. one another and the church and you could go on and on, in fact,

  222. we are told to sing to the Lord Within These two passages here.

  223. And so from that, it eliminates secular music We can't just sing

  224. anything we want. Another third thing I want to

  225. notice about these verses is that they indicate the entire

  226. congregation is to participate in the singing.

  227. You have this term one for another or One Another Part Of

  228. Me in both of these passages and it's a reciprocal, meaning main

  229. meaning that it represents kind of an inner exchange between me

  230. and you as we sing together. Either, that's, that's what it

  231. means. There's another and forth thing

  232. that to notice about this in this is about the term for

  233. making our meta make Melody. It is from the Greek word of

  234. solemn and there is a history to this word and sometimes a

  235. meaning of a word could change throughout time.

  236. And that's exactly what happens with the word psallo.

  237. We had to understand what this word means.

  238. At the time of, when Paul wrote it, it was sometime between the

  239. year about 900. Of maybe 330 BC somewhere in

  240. that range. Saul.

  241. Oh the word, psallo carry the basic meaning of to touch

  242. sharply or to move by touching or to pull or to Twitch.

  243. And so saw low was used of twitching the Carpenters line as

  244. to kind of leave a mark. Like you're like, you got a

  245. chalk line and you pull that line and you have left a mark,

  246. it could mean something like that.

  247. But Saul could also be used to convey the sense of plucking,

  248. the strings of an instrument. So that's what it meant before

  249. the cross between 900 and 330, BC, fast forward through time

  250. now, till after the cross. And you arrive at the time when

  251. the New Testament was being written and Scholars,

  252. acknowledge that the fact that the meaning of solow had

  253. actually changed, and let me give you a few references

  254. regarding this. They are says about this word,

  255. psallo, he says, and I quote, in the New Testament solow

  256. signifies to seeing a him to celebrate the Praises of God, in

  257. psalm, Let me reference, someone else dubbing evine, another

  258. great scholar own words said this.

  259. He said the word psallo originally meant to play

  260. stringed instrument with the fingers or to sing with the

  261. accompaniment of heart of a harp later.

  262. However, and in the New Testament, it came to signify

  263. simply to praise without the accompaniment of an instruments.

  264. In the exit exegetical dictionary of the New Testament

  265. Alton snipe Snyder says this. They write in the New Testament

  266. saw low. Always refers to a song of

  267. praise to God. Now, seeing those references, we

  268. understand the term had changed over the years.

  269. And if solid did retain some Association of plucking, while

  270. Paul was writing this letter to these Brethren the instrument

  271. would have to be identified by the text.

  272. Would it not wouldn't you think? So based upon that another

  273. author FF Bruce says, he made this observation that The Melody

  274. of which Paul is principally concerned is The Melody of the

  275. heart. Which accompanies the vocal

  276. singing. So the hearts will, that's the

  277. spiritual instrument of this context.

  278. There is no mechanical instrument implied.

  279. Impulse teaching, And as we've seen so far with Christians or

  280. would church assembly, we don't see this type of of music of

  281. instrumental music and we're going to progress our study and

  282. then we'll come to the conclusion at the end of this

  283. and that's all I really going to say about instrumental music in

  284. our study. I want to kind of keep it down

  285. to what did the church do as we progress on.

  286. We have Hebrews 2:12, which comes to our our next passage

    Hebrews 2:12

  287. when it comes to Christians and music.

  288. And he says here, Hebrews 2 verse 12 saying, I will declare

    Hebrews 2:12

  289. your name to my brother and in the midst of the assembly, I

  290. will sing praise to you. Now the writer of Hebrews when

  291. he writes this, he's actually quoting from David.

  292. And the passage is from Psalm 22 and verse number 22.

  293. Now, the speaker In this passage with, if you look at the context

  294. of Psalm, 22 was talking about the Messiah.

  295. So this passage is the Lord about the met, the Messiah and

  296. prophecy. And so, because of that

  297. understanding some of argued that this was actually

  298. fulfilled, this passage or the prophecy when Jesus, when he

  299. some that him, what the disciples there at the Passover

  300. feast the very night where he would be betrayed that, they

  301. sung that him after that Passover feast just actually

  302. before he instituted the Lord's Supper.

  303. So most agree. This is this is that and that's

  304. pretty much all we know about this.

  305. So this has nothing to do with with the Assembly of the church

  306. but yet it is a reference to singing in the New Testament.

  307. Scriptures, Hebrews 13 and 15. We find this therefore by him,

  308. let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God.

  309. That is the fruit of our lips giving, thanks to his name.

  310. This giving of thanks from the fruit of our lips that's in

  311. reference to us doing that through our voice in singing.

  312. That can involve that way. And so, that's another passage.

  313. We find another passage here in James 5, and verse 13 regarding,

  314. Christian singing, where it says that 81 cheerful, let him sing

  315. Psalms And again, we find that filling the certain way.

  316. In this case, he's saying if you're in a good mood, sing Sing

  317. about God's goodness. Sing about heaven, sing about

  318. the love of Christ saying. Burst forth and song, and that

  319. was a quick little run down that we that we made in observation

  320. of all those and to kind of bring everything together when

  321. it went. Well, what we seen from these

  322. passages, we've examined regarding Christians in the

  323. church, singing of that there to do, just that there to sing and

  324. to sing together as a congregation when the church

  325. assembles for worship and our song.

  326. Um, should take our minds to spiritual things so that we can

  327. lift each other up and praise and honor the Lord while we do

  328. so. And that is the gist of our

  329. conclusion of all these passages that we've seen regarding music

  330. or singing and Christians. Now, in addition, now to the

  331. inspired word, There are historical references that speak

  332. to the practice of the how the early church saying as they

  333. assembled for worship. I want to say this as a

  334. disclaimer before we move on. When we reference external

  335. evidences and even in our study we do not Place those opinions

  336. of man or observations any higher or at any level than what

  337. we've seen in the Holy scriptures.

  338. All I'm doing is referencing what other men have observed the

  339. early church doing. And seeing if they did, what was

  340. what we've seen with in the scriptures.

  341. And so, having stated that the first description of Christians

  342. coming together, that's actually outside of the New Testament

  343. scriptures that actually comes from a Roman Governor whose name

  344. was planning the younger. And he observed the practice of

  345. the other church and wrote it in about the year 110, And this is

  346. his observation and you'll notice he is very doubtful, this

  347. man to Christian because of his language and his observation.

  348. But he says affirmed. However, the whole of their

  349. guilt or there are was that they were in the habit of meeting on

  350. a certain fixed day before. It was light, when they sang, an

  351. alternate versus a him to Christ as to a God and bound themselves

  352. by solemn oath. oh, What we see is that he sees a group of

  353. people coming together. And they're seeing and these

  354. alternate versus it could kind of be where you have a leader.

  355. Maybe before there were some books, back in the day, you

  356. would have a leader who would sing a phrase?

  357. And then the congregation will repeat that phrase.

  358. And you would have this reciprocal kind of thing going

  359. on during the song and that seemed to have been a style of

  360. singing Back Then. And so that's one thing that we

  361. notice from Pliny, the Younger regarding them coming together.

  362. You have another in his commentary on Psalm 65.

  363. You have used to use of BS. Who says this about the church,

  364. he says, throughout the world and cities and Villages and in

  365. the country, in all the Churches of God, the people of Christ who

  366. have been chosen out of all the nations, send up, not to the

  367. native Gods, nor two demons. But to the one God, God spoken

  368. of by the prophets. He says, hymns and samedi with a

  369. loud voice so that the sound of those singing can be heard by

  370. those standing outside. And how can that be done a Tokyo

  371. be done with a large group of people or what the group of

  372. people singing together, and that's what we see from his

  373. observation. It takes my mind back to My mom

  374. and dad would take us to these to the soul from eating.

  375. If you've never been there, they've got this Tabernacle just

  376. out out in the open and around there, just surrounding

  377. neighborhood. And when you have hundreds of

  378. people gathered there for worship and singing together,

  379. all the neighbors could hear. I imagine he would be able to

  380. make that same observation with the church coming together to

  381. hear that sound of those singing together.

  382. And so that's what we know his or about the the church.

  383. Would they assemble for worship and how they sing together as a

  384. congregation. And I'm just kind of, kind of,

  385. leave it at. Just those two observations from

  386. external sources, but singing in the church is a wonderful thing.

  387. There's a reason why God commanded for the church to

  388. worship Him and song. If I were to brainstorm, I would

  389. say singing brings people together, doesn't it?

  390. Singing. Unites us.

  391. Singing creates emotions within us.

  392. Singing touches Our Hearts singing creates an opportunity

  393. for us to praise him. It doesn't matter if you're good

  394. at it or not. Just sing.

  395. And sing from your heart. And sing, praise to him.

  396. That's really all that matters to God is when you do that.

  397. What a wonderful privilege. We have to be able to do that.

  398. Every time we come to worship, don't lie?

  399. It's not because the leaders of the congregation have decided.

  400. Well this we've had to tradition of always singing.

  401. So people like singing. So this is what we're going to
