  1. Glory to Jesus Christ. Glory to Christ. The gospel

  2. is called Good News, and you've just heard the

  3. best of Good News. Jesus, in this incredible

  4. prayer with his Father, and we can speak about

  5. that all day. We have this insight. into this

  6. relationship with Jesus and the Father in that

  7. passage from the Gospel of John, chapter 17,

    John 17 chapter mention

  8. that is very touching and encouraging, especially

  9. at the end when he says that he has come and

  10. he has given the words that we might have his

  11. joy. Such good news. So, let us hear. Let us

  12. hear a little bit more now of this gospel, the

  13. first one we read from Luke chapter 8, the parable

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  14. of the soul. Each October we hear this parable.

  15. It happens to be during harvest season. Perhaps

  16. that's when Jesus offered his words to the crowd

  17. of people that were around him. Perhaps it was

  18. harvest season then. We have to remind ourselves

  19. that for those who were listening to Jesus on

  20. that day, sowing seed and harvesting crops was

  21. the life or death matter. They had to survive

  22. on the food, the plants they planted and the

  23. food they would reap from that harvest. This

  24. isn't just a story that Jesus kind of pulls out

  25. of his hat that kind of sounds good to everybody.

  26. It really hits home for them. We don't have that

  27. kind of relationship with the earth. We run up

  28. to Trader Joe's or Costco or wherever we're going

  29. to go, and we're not worried about the harvest

  30. except how much the prices have gone up. And

  31. also, those listening to Jesus, Hearing this

  32. parable about a sower that just goes everywhere,

  33. throwing his seed, even on the path, probably

  34. thought this was a crazy man, this sower. Why

  35. would he waste his seed? But it's funny, in the

  36. epistle of St. Paul, the passage you heard today

  37. says, he who sows sparingly will reap sparingly.

  38. So this seed is everywhere. The word of God is

  39. the seed. The word of God is Jesus Christ. It's

  40. not some idea. It's Christ's presence in the

  41. heart of every single person. And he's sowing

  42. everywhere. And there's an expectation then in

  43. this parable by Jesus Christ that we do something

  44. with that seed. with that that's been put in

  45. our heart, his word, which he has so graciously

  46. and extravagantly spread everywhere. In a way,

  47. this parable, which the Lord himself has explained,

  48. because the apostles just didn't get what he

  49. said, it's similar to the parable of the talents.

  50. It's about accountability before God. The gift

  51. of salvation. accountability, which means judgment

  52. also for us. From what we have received, what

  53. do we do with what we've been given in the church?

  54. What do we do with not just the spiritual blessings

  55. that we've received, but the material blessings

  56. that we've received? This is St. Paul's message

  57. to the Corinthians there. If you give a lot,

  58. You will reap a lot. Christ is trying and tries

  59. with all that he has, then and now, to bring

  60. us into that joy that he said, to bring us to

  61. the kingdom, to remind us of the good news of

  62. the resurrection. The gospel readings, pretty

  63. much every week, are challenging us, asking us.

  64. What is our response today to that news? You

  65. hear the parable of the talents. You hear stories

  66. of a rich young man who walks away from Jesus.

  67. He can't respond, or he responds in a negative

  68. way, I should say. You hear the message of the

  69. cross and St. Peter's rejection of that. You

  70. hear about the denial of the Lord by St. Peter

  71. on the night of the Passion. The gospel's telling

  72. us over and over there are a lot of good reasons

  73. to water down the message of the cross, the message

  74. of the gospel. A lot of good reasons to back

  75. away from Jesus Christ. The reasons are not true.

  76. A sower went out to sow his seed, Jesus starts.

  77. As he sowed, some fell by the wayside. It was

  78. trampled down. The birds of the air devoured

  79. it. As I said, the Lord, the sower, puts into

  80. the heart of every single person some kind of

  81. knowledge of the glory of God. The heavens are

  82. telling the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims

  83. His handiwork. Day by day, the words go forth

  84. into all the universe. It's looking at nature,

  85. even, that we can see that there's something

  86. in us that calls us to higher and higher and

  87. greater spiritual life. His presence is everywhere

  88. as we sing. Everywhere present and fillest all

  89. things. Notice in the Gospel, now to just bring

  90. it to a simple understanding, the seeds of faith

  91. that fell on the good ground, Jesus said, are

  92. those who having heard the word with a noble

  93. and good heart. Keep it and bear fruit with patience.

  94. Once again, Jesus is speaking to us about the

  95. heart. The heart. This is encouraging to me.

  96. Because we come together and the heart becomes

  97. a mother. more receptive here at the Divine Liturgy

  98. when we are together. But there's something that

  99. worries me deeply about this parable, also about

  100. the heart. What worries me is this. Jesus points

  101. out in the parable that those by the wayside,

  102. the heart at work, they represent those who are

  103. given the seed of faith. They hear, he says.

  104. Then, The devil comes and takes away the word

  105. out of their hearts, lest they should believe

  106. and should be saved. It scares me. It worries

  107. me deeply to think that the devil has some kind

  108. of access to my heart. This is deeply disturbing.

  109. We need protection. The Holy Spirit gives us

  110. that. But over and over again, we see how our

  111. heart can be invaded by thoughts, by judgment,

  112. by criticisms, by anger, by fear, by lack of

  113. faith, by accusations, by disappointments. It

  114. worries me also, deeply, that when Jesus tells

  115. us what happens with the second kind of sorrow,

  116. one receives the word of God, the gospel message,

  117. the light of Christ with joy, but there's no

  118. root. And when a time of testing or temptation,

  119. in the gospel, it's the same word that Jesus

  120. uses for in the Lord's Prayer. Lead us not into

  121. temptation. Lead us not into the time of testing.

  122. When a time of testing comes, one walks away.

  123. It was joyful for a while. The Christian faith

  124. was zealous. And then it became dry. But that's

  125. the path we go when we hit the desert. And the

  126. manna is there. And the repentance is there.

  127. And we survive that time of testing. We have

  128. to be watchful for this time of temptation when

  129. we can either mature in the faith, be faithful

  130. in what we do, or be afraid and resentful and

  131. angered about that time and fall away. And it

  132. worries me deeply also when the Savior says that

  133. there are those of us, and I include myself,

  134. in which Christ's presence, the Word of God,

  135. is choked. It's choked. How? Not by testing.

  136. Not by the devil. But by a self -inflicted, a

  137. pile -up in the mind and in the heart. of cares

  138. and worries and he says pleasures of this life

  139. he doesn't mean that the pleasures of this life

  140. are bad in themselves no we give thanks to god

  141. for the material blessings we receive but for

  142. the pursuit pursuit of pleasure for the contemplation

  143. of pleasure which turns us away from christ this

  144. is a self -inflicted wound shown by cares Let's

  145. be honest. By affluence. The Lord calls us back

  146. sometimes with hardship and sickness. All that

  147. is my own fault when it's choked. It's not from

  148. God. I have to be careful. We have to be careful

  149. not to neglect the care of our soul. Not to be

  150. offended. To be watchful for that time when God

  151. is testing us. like gold in the fire to be purified.

  152. St. Basil says, and when a soul is purified,

  153. it's like crystal, and the sun hits that crystal

  154. and becomes even more beautiful, sending out

  155. warmth and rays in every direction. That's what

  156. we're supposed to be like. But we have too many

  157. distractions. Turn off your cell phones when

  158. you come to church. Today, no cell phone has

  159. gone off during the homily. This is a minor miracle.

  160. Turn them off when you come in. You only need

  161. to eat your mind on the Lord, not on those cares.

  162. Maybe we should add a line to the true became.

  163. Lay aside all earthly cares and turn off the

  164. cell phone. And you will in that case. Brothers

  165. and sisters in Christ, let me summarize what

  166. the remedy is. Four remedies. The scriptures,

  167. confession, divine liturgy, and receiving Holy

  168. Communion. These remedies are not obligations.

  169. They're not things that we've come up with. They're

  170. not things that we must do. Not requirements.

  171. These are gifts. Four gifts from God. The liturgy,

  172. the scriptures, confession, communion are not

  173. about what we do, but gifts from God that he

  174. gives to us. And we can receive them and make

  175. ourselves capable of receiving them. Because

  176. that's the participation in the kingdom of God.

  177. That is when the word, the seed of faith grows

  178. in the mind. That is when we have Christ's joy

  179. fulfilled in ourselves. Amen.
