  1. It is great to be here with all of you today.

  2. We're so thankful for the presence of all that have made

  3. an effort to be with us to worship God together in spirit.

  4. And in truth, we have several of our number actually, quite a few

  5. members of our congregation that are other places today.

  6. They're up, north at the Memorial Day meeting or some are

  7. out because they're ill. Perhaps others, traveling other

  8. places. So I decided to deviate from the

  9. series that I've started with you, and that is on the, I am

  10. statements, the seven. I am statements.

  11. That Jesus Jesus made as recorded in the Gospel of John.

  12. We've already talked about Jesus saying, I am the bread of life.

  13. I am the light of the world and I am the door next time.

  14. Lord willing. We're going to talk on the

  15. subject of when Jesus said I am the Good Shepherd.

  16. So we'll deal with that next time.

  17. What I wanted to do today though is I want to talk on some

  18. passages that are found in the very last sermon that Jesus ever

  19. preached. And it's found in Chapter 23 and

  20. beginning there, in verse 23, Jesus says this woe to you

  21. scribes and Pharisees Hypocrites for you, pay tithe of mint, and

  22. anise, and cumin and have neglected, the weightier matters

  23. of the law, Justice, and mercy, and Faith.

  24. These, you want to have done without leaving the others

  25. undone. Just a little bit of background

  26. here, Jesus on the day of questioning, or the day of

  27. Questions, perhaps, Scholars, tell us.

  28. It could have very well been on Tuesday in the last week, in the

  29. life of Jesus and Jesus is questioned by the Pharisees, by

  30. the Sadducees. He's questioned by the

  31. herodians, he's questioned by the scribes.

  32. And the reason that they come to Jesus, to try to discredit him

  33. is because if they can discredit Jesus in the eyes of the people,

  34. then the people would be supportive of Jesus being

  35. crucified and All they wanted to do.

  36. But Jesus answers every one of their questions, and now it's

  37. time for the Lord to preach and he preaches this sermon so long

  38. ago. He begins by saying calling them

  39. scribes and Pharisees and hypocrites.

  40. Notice the first thing. He says, this is what he's going

  41. to bring out. He said you pay tithe of mint

  42. and anise and cumin. Now, what are those things?

  43. You know, the word for I meant actually in the original.

  44. It's translated from a Greek word.

  45. That means sweet smelling. So we all know what meant smells

  46. like these were kitchen spices. They were things that were added

  47. to their food and so forth. And what he says is you give

  48. tithe to MIT and it's, by the way is Dill.

  49. It's a flavoring agent and human is also a flavoring agent to,

  50. excuse me. And what he was saying is Saying

  51. that these scribes and Pharisees and all of that they were paying

  52. tithes to them. And what they would do is this

  53. we're going to get to tithing in just a moment though because God

  54. commanded a tithe and of the Old Testament, what they would do is

  55. they took the command to tithe and they extended it to the idea

  56. of even the kitchen spices, they would count out nine for me and

  57. one for God, nine for me, and one for God.

  58. And then cumin 9 for me. Me and one for God.

  59. Now it's important that I make this point, I think it's really

  60. not the point, whether they were giving a tithe of these kitchen

  61. spices or not. What was Jesus was addressing

  62. was their motive behind it? That was the point.

  63. Let me notice with you to Old Testament passages in Leviticus

    Leviticus 27 chapter mention

  64. chapter 27 and verse 30. It says in all the tithe of the

  65. land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the

  66. tree. The Lord is the Lord's, another

  67. passage to that's found its found in Deuteronomy 14 and 22.

  68. You shall truly tithe all the increase of your grain that the

  69. field produces year by year. All right God commanded that

  70. they would give a tithe of the increase that was produced in

  71. the field. Now let me ask you this.

  72. If God did not mean and that's not the point.

  73. But if he didn't mean about the kitchen spices is it wrong for

  74. man to tithe or give from the kitchen spices?

  75. Absolutely not. It is never wrong.

  76. It is never wrong to give to God.

  77. They would sort it out though, and they would be very well,

  78. they would be very attentive to those even those kitchen spices.

  79. One scholar said it this way, these men magnify the

  80. insignificant and they minimized the essential.

  81. All right, on the outside. Their expression, seems

  82. honorable. They gave a tenth of what could

  83. be counted. And I got to thinking about this

  84. this morning. You know, I quit my father, a

  85. lot. Some of you knew my father, my

  86. father used to always say What would you do if you didn't get

  87. credit? What would you do if no one was

  88. there to give you the credit? It's kind of like this.

  89. He would tell me about working out and stuff.

  90. He said if you work out the eyes of your coaches just because

  91. they're watching what good is that it's really not who you are

  92. and they said the greatest things you will ever do our

  93. behind the scenes when you don't get credit a Texas billionaire,

  94. once said in the testimony of his life and what drove him in

  95. his life, he said my father was a Salesman.

  96. He was the greatest. Salesman in all the world to

  97. him. And he said, you know what, my

  98. father taught me and I've tried to live by that principle.

  99. This Texas, billionaire said my father said, if you're willing

  100. to give somebody else the credit you can conquer the world If you

  101. just don't have to have the credit, these fastidious

  102. Pharisees, they wanted the credit, all the things that can

  103. be seen. How do I know that?

  104. That's exactly what Jesus meant. When he talked about the

  105. Pharisees it says they like to be seen in the synagogue.

  106. They like long prayers that they're seen of men and Jesus

  107. said they have their reward. In other words whatever pat on

  108. the back that they get from the world, looking at them and

  109. viewing them and giving them credit is all there.

  110. To get there, getting nothing from the Father, the idea is the

  111. motive behind it. Notice what he says here.

  112. You're careful to give tithe of mint and anise, and cumin.

  113. But what did you do wrong? You've neglected, the weightier

  114. matters of the law and those weightier matters, are Justice,

  115. mercy and Faith. You know, the term weightier is

  116. the rabbinical term and it was passed down by rabbinic

  117. tradition and what the Jews would do, is they based on

  118. rabbinic tradition. They would consider certain

  119. aspects of the the law more weightier than other matters of

  120. the law. And what's interesting is Jesus,

  121. is going to tell them what the weightier matters really are.

  122. He uses their phrase. He uses their rabbinic term and

  123. then he makes his point the Jews.

  124. For example, believe that certain aspects of the Old Law

  125. were more weightier than the others.

  126. Like, for example circumcision, and by the way, that's why, when

  127. the Judy izing teachers entered into the church, after the

  128. church was established, they wanted to By aspect bind aspects

  129. of the Old Law on them. What based upon their way to

  130. your matters like circumcision? Here's another one.

  131. Remember what the hated Jesus for.

  132. How the he handled the Sabbath, you know why rabbinic tradition

  133. taught that keeping the Sabbath was a weightier matter.

  134. What Jesus is saying, is this your careful to give tithes of,

  135. he's kitchen spices, but you're neglecting the weightier matters

  136. of the law and Jesus says what they are.

  137. They're Justice Mercy. And Faith.

  138. You know, this is really powerful because Jesus doesn't

  139. just grab this out of nowhere and they would have understood

  140. this to, it's a parallel. What Jesus says, here about

  141. Justice, mercy, and faith is a parallel to what's found in the

  142. Book of Micah in the Old Testament, notice this Mike is 6

  143. and verse 8 he has shown you o man what is good and what does

  144. the Lord require of you? But To do justly, love, mercy,

  145. and walk humbly with your God. You know, they were guilty of

  146. being against all of that they were unjust.

  147. They were unmerciful. They were unkind, they were

  148. unforgiving, they were Unholy. They did not walk humbly with

  149. their God, they walked by The Works of the law by their own

  150. efforts. They walk by sight and had no

  151. faith. They neglected truly the

  152. weightier matters of the law. Now it's important that we

  153. remember this too, sometimes, please get this sometimes, gue

  154. people say, in interpreting, this passage is Jesus, doesn't

  155. care at all about the details. He only cares about Justice,

  156. mercy, and faith. And that's not what the Lord

  157. said. Let's notice what the Lord

  158. actually did say. These Justice mercy and Faith.

  159. You ought to have done without leaving the others undone.

  160. In other words, keep the Commandments, keep the details,

  161. do they matter. Yes, they matter at the same

  162. time. Keep Justice, mercy and Faith,

  163. but weightier matters. In other words, don't be without

  164. any of them. You know, I got to say sometimes

  165. people. Sometimes people can go through

  166. their life thinking that they've figured out what it means to

  167. look like the kind of person that they should be by checking

  168. the boxes off and going down the list.

  169. And okay, I'm doing that, I'm doing that, I'm doing that.

  170. And yet, they're awful to other people, unkind to other people.

  171. It matters, folks. We need to understand that being

  172. a member of the church is also being a Christian.

  173. They ought to go hand-in-hand. Absolutely, when you spend time

  174. on what it means to be a Christian and to be a member of

  175. the church. It should be the exact same

  176. thing. How we treat one another It's

  177. not just a list, it's how God wants us to be as a Christian in

  178. our life in the church should be the very same thing.

  179. Sometimes people look at these passes and say you see we don't

  180. have to obey anything. We just have to have those other

  181. matters and that's not what Jesus said.

  182. All right? So they should have kept the

  183. weightier matters. They should have given attention

  184. to the proper tithe and all of that.

  185. And now, Jesus is going to give examples of what they're like.

  186. blind guides who strain out a gnat and swallow the camel, you

  187. know, the word strain It comes from a word that means to

  188. filter. Now, the Old King James says it

  189. like this, it says, who strain at a gnat but the new King James

  190. really, I think is a better translation of it blind guides,

  191. who strain out a gnat, because that's exactly what they did.

  192. Annette by the way, was the smallest of all unclean things.

  193. And what they would do is for example, they would would make

  194. sure that they didn't eat the NAT Leviticus chapter 11 verse

    Leviticus 11:42

  195. 42 says whatever crawls on its belly.

  196. Whatever goes on all fours. And whatever has many feet among

  197. all creeping things that creep on the earth.

  198. These you shall not eat for. They are an Abomination.

  199. Another Passage Leviticus 11 and verse 4.

  200. Nevertheless, you shall not eat among those that chew the cud.

  201. Nor those who have cloven hoofs the camel because it chews the

  202. cud, but does not have cloven. Hooves is unclean to you.

  203. This is what they would actually do, by the way, Jesus, is

  204. telling them, you know, what you're doing.

  205. You see the net You're avoiding the net.

  206. But you're swallowing the camel. You're avoiding the smallest of

  207. unclean days. But you're swallowing the

  208. biggest. You're missing the point by

  209. neglecting the weightier matters.

  210. Actually, I read some stuff that was actually found in the talmud

  211. and some other things have historians and Scholars have

  212. written about what they would actually do and that's what they

  213. would have understood. When Jesus says you strain out

  214. the neck, what they would do is this When they would make wine,

  215. or they would make a beverage, what they would do is they'd be

  216. very careful to keep it pure and keep it clean.

  217. In fact, what they would do is they would take a strainer

  218. cloth, just perhaps a gnat flew in there.

  219. They didn't know and all of a sudden it's in there, they don't

  220. want to be guilty of eating one of those gnats.

  221. So they would take a strainer cloth and they would place it

  222. over the top. They would pour the beverage

  223. through the strainer cloth and if there wasn't that, that was

  224. in there, then that wouldn't get into the Drinking vessel, and

  225. they could partake of it. They could drink it and not be

  226. guilty of having something that was on claim.

  227. That was straining out the net one.

  228. Scholar said this. Do I thought this was rather

  229. interesting, he said some fastidious Pharisees drank their

  230. wine through clenched teeth in order to filter out any

  231. impurities and then pick the nap out of their teeth.

  232. Nah. I tried to picture what that

  233. would have looked like some guy with this teacher like this

  234. drinking a beverage. Making sure he didn't eat the

  235. net, okay? You don't want to eat the net,

  236. right? And then it gets into a flick it

  237. out the teeth later. Okay.

  238. That's what Jesus was referring to.

  239. That's how fast it is from the standpoint of every detail.

  240. They were but they missed the whole point.

  241. In other words, you're afraid to eat the 10th meet mint, leave

  242. but you're allowing in your life hypocrisy, dishonesty, cruelty,

  243. and greed. That's what he says that.

  244. When you neglect, the weightier matters of the law, you know

  245. what you're doing, you're straining out the net but you're

  246. swallowing a camel number two, the second example, describing

  247. them, it's found in verse 25, woe to you scribes and Pharisees

  248. Hypocrites, for you cleanse, the outside of the cup and dish, but

  249. inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence.

  250. Interesting, the word dish in the Greek is a very interesting

  251. word, it's not just any ordinary.

  252. Nari dish. It actually is translated as

  253. fancy dish and just a little bit of background about that.

  254. If there was some kind of a function, or some kind of a

  255. party, or some engagement, and so forth, and people came

  256. together, if there were all there eating and so forth.

  257. When they would bring out this particular dish, everybody knew

  258. that when you brought the fancy dish out that contained therein

  259. were the Delicacies the special stuff.

  260. Do you see what he's saying? He's saying on the outside,

  261. you're appearing to be one way. You're appearing to be something

  262. that you're not. And by the way, I know that the

  263. word hypocrite is the most overused word in the English

  264. language, when people refer to people that are religious, it

  265. is, it's overused, it's abused and all of that.

  266. But a hypocrite is what he's talking about now.

  267. Scribes Pharisees Hypocrites. Why they're pretending to be

  268. something. Thing that they're really not on

  269. the outside there. Looking like this fancy dish is

  270. going to bring the Delicacies, but on the inside now, it's

  271. filthy. You're spending all of your time

  272. washing, the outside of the cup, and the dish.

  273. But the inside is full of extortion and excess one

  274. scholar, said it like this. You have a Ministry that looks

  275. Pious on the outside, but the whole thing is based on taking

  276. advantage of other people, you use people, you make merchandise

  277. out of people. And, you know, the real source

  278. of impurity was there. Heart.

  279. I know we spent a lot of time about the heartbeat, you know

  280. why? Because the heart, one way or

  281. the other is exactly the reason and the source of our Behavior,

  282. that's the reason. Sometimes you can correct a

  283. symptom but this it doesn't go away because you haven't

  284. corrected the problem. You know, it's kind of like this

  285. if you have pain I'll just use myself years ago.

  286. I had a headache for 10 years. I had concussion problems and so

  287. forth and I went to all kinds of doctors.

  288. You know what they did. They gave me these medicines to

  289. help the pain. Didn't go away came right back

  290. you know why didn't fix the problem?

  291. Then a doctor, put me on some medication that I take as a

  292. preventative manner. Our preventive measure, guess

  293. what? No more headaches.

  294. Fix the problem, fix the source, and not just the symptom.

  295. So when we talk about people not putting the Lord first in their

  296. life that is a symptom. That's a symptom, we talked

  297. about and I'm not going to get on this subject but we talked

  298. about attendance things don't get better because it's only a

  299. symptom. It's a symptom of a greater

  300. problem. Mmm, and that's the heart.

  301. What Jesus was saying is your real great about polishing, the

  302. outside, the problem is your rotten heart.

  303. The problem is your heart on the inside.

  304. If you fix the inside, the outside will be fixed.

  305. Also, and, you know, I think this is really true, you know,

  306. God looks at the heart. God cares about the heart.

  307. He really does Jesus would say that too.

  308. When he walked on the face of this Earth and his personal

  309. Ministry said, you heard that it had been said and he would cook

  310. something from the old law. But then Jesus say, but I say

  311. unto you the motive means everything, the heart is the

  312. source. Let me say something pretty

  313. sobering to you. But I will tell you this.

  314. We could be here today. And we could be going through

  315. the motions of worship. We can make sure that every time

  316. those doors are open. We are right here.

  317. We are worshipping God, right? We're here.

  318. Got it. Check me off.

  319. It's possible to go through the motions, but your heart is far

  320. from God. God knows, the heart and God

  321. cares about the heart. And if your heart is out there

  322. somewhere, it's only a matter of time before you will follow it.

  323. I think people do exactly what they want to do.

  324. I really do and many times, they do what they want to do and then

  325. figure out ways after the fact that justify their decisions,

  326. but you will go where your heart goes.

  327. And you know what, I didn't say that Jesus did where your

  328. treasure is. That's where your heart will be.

  329. Also God cares about the heart, look at an Old Testament.

  330. The passage now as found in first Samuel, 16 and 7 but the

  331. Lord said to Samuel, do not look at this appearance or at his

  332. physical stature, because I have refused him for the.

  333. Lord does not see as a man sees, for a man.

  334. Looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.

  335. All right, then he says this. By the way, he begins with

  336. scribes Pharisees Hypocrites over and over again.

  337. I got to tell you this might be a very unpopular sermon today.

  338. I'm so glad the Lord preached it.

  339. He does it again in verse 26. Blind Pharisees Hypocrites.

  340. Then he says what you should do instead of doing what you've

  341. been doing and that is washing the outside not caring about the

  342. inside first clinch, the inside of the cup and dish that the

  343. outside of them may be clean. Also, I don't mean to

  344. oversimplify and I hope I'm not insulting your intelligence but

  345. we've all done dishes. We've all been washed dishes,

  346. you can hold a cup out of the water and you could take a

  347. sponge and clean the outside and it looks real good.

  348. It could be filthy inside, it really can What Jesus says is,

  349. that's what you're doing, what you should do, is wash the

  350. inside. And notice when you wash the

  351. inside, the outside takes care of itself.

  352. You take the same cup. You submerge it.

  353. In a sink full of soapy water. You clean the inside.

  354. Aren't you? Also cleaning the outside?

  355. That is submerged. In that soapy water.

  356. The idea is fix the inside. The outside.

  357. Will take care of itself. Then here's another description.

  358. Another description of them in verse 27, woe to you scribes and

  359. Pharisees Hypocrites. For you are like whitewashed

  360. tombs which indeed appear, beautiful, beautiful outwardly,

  361. but inside are full of dead, men's bones and all on

  362. cleanliness. You're guilty of deception and

  363. you contaminate people. This is actually a stinging

  364. accusation folks. It's one of the most picturesque

  365. Jesus gives new assistant about them.

  366. He says then you're like whitewashed tombs.

  367. What is that? It's a little background about

  368. that. First of all, the idea is you

  369. are continue are contaminating. Other people spiritually.

  370. What are these Whited sepulchres or whitewashed tombs?

  371. What they would do is Is they would take at the time, or after

  372. the time of the rains and what they would do is, when the rainy

  373. season was over, they would take lime powder.

  374. They would mix it with water and they would wipe wash the tombs

  375. and there was a reason for that. By the way, I remember, when I

  376. came into the painting trade, 31 years ago, I remember that

  377. whitewash cabinets were the big fat of the day and that was such

  378. a fad. It was red oak cabinets with

  379. white, Platinum stain. And we called that whitewash and

  380. there, it actually would look kind of pink and then you'd like

  381. written and lacquer with yellow and you just imagine what they

  382. look like in 10 years, but that was a fad and that's what people

  383. wanted whitewashed. Here was different.

  384. They took lime powder. They mixed it with water and it

  385. was kind of like paint and they would actually do this.

  386. In fact, the mishnah said, on the 15th of Adar which is the

  387. month of March, in Israel at that time, they would whitewash

  388. these tombs and they did it for a number of reasons.

  389. They would whitewash those caves and Limestone tombs where the

  390. more prominent people were buried and they did that in

  391. preparation of the Passover, people would be coming during

  392. the time of the Passover. They'd be coming in the

  393. Jerusalem and one historian said, you could look up to the

  394. hillside in Jerusalem, and you can see Whited sepulchres or

  395. whitewashed tombs dotting, the landscape of all of that.

  396. Do you know why? Two reasons?

  397. One, it looked great. On the outside and to so that

  398. somebody coming into Jerusalem during the time of the Passover

  399. would not inadvertently touch one of those Graves and become

  400. unclean at the time of the Passover in Jerusalem.

  401. That's why they did that. They would take that lime powder

  402. and they would put it on those tombs.

  403. What else would they do? I read that they actually took

  404. and they would sometimes just cover the the whole tomb and

  405. other times they would draw pictures of bones.

  406. Telling people don't touch, and this is why in numbers 19 and

  407. 16. Whoever in the open field,

  408. touches one who is slain by a sword, or who has died or a bone

  409. of a man, or a grave shall be unclean.

  410. Seven days. That was the reason.

  411. Now, that's just history. But can you imagine being called

  412. that? Can you imagine the Lord calling

  413. you a whitewashed tomb? On the outside you appear,

  414. beautiful clean. But on the inside, you're not

  415. Inside, you are nothing, but Dead, Man's Bones, full of dead,

  416. men's bones, and uncleanness. The graves appear beautiful on

  417. the outside and I think to the idea is, he's telling them and

  418. application here. He's telling them an application

  419. that you're contaminating people because they see you as one

  420. thing on the outside but you're not.

  421. And I got to tell you. It's kind of like a false

  422. teacher. It really is.

  423. Have you ever stopped to consider the collateral damage

  424. when somebody teaches error? I gotta clarify something to you

  425. not talking about somebody that just misunderstands a passage

  426. and teaches it and maybe they just missed the passage or they

  427. didn't understand it thoroughly or fully.

  428. When I talk about a false teacher, I'm talking about this,

  429. I'm talking about somebody that rejects what the truth of the

  430. Bible says and accepts an erroneous position, that's

  431. that's inaccurate and teaches the erroneous position which is

  432. inaccurate and does that to draw a party unto himself.

  433. Called a false teacher, the Bible in the New Testament calls

  434. that a heretic. Somebody, that is not genuine.

  435. Somebody that's a false teacher is just like this contaminating,

  436. those that come across. And what that's doing is this,

  437. its leading them with collateral damage away from the truth.

  438. When somebody decides to do that, it always has damaged.

  439. Jesus says, though, the inside you are full of dead men's

  440. bones, in Matthew chapter, 23 and verse 28.

  441. The application here, even so you also outwardly appear

  442. righteous unto men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and

  443. lawlessness. Now then there's one more, so so

  444. far Jesus says you're in. Neglecting the weightier matters

  445. of the law. That's what he said, and he

  446. describes them so far, three ways.

  447. Number one, you strain out a gnat, but just well, the

  448. Campbell number two, you wash the outside of the cup, but

  449. inside, it's filthy and number three.

  450. You're like, whitewashed tombs on the outside.

  451. But inside, you're just what you are in, that is dead men's

  452. bones, but there was something else, they were guilty of and

  453. that was for attention pretending to be so much better

  454. than everybody else. Have you ever stopped to

  455. consider? Or how much God hates Pride. you

  456. know, the Bible talks about Pride, pride goes before,

  457. destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.

  458. That's what the Bible says. When Satan in the third of the

  459. hosts of Heaven were cast out of heaven.

  460. So long ago, it was because of sinful Pride, thinking yourself

  461. to be better than somebody else. And Jesus is going to deal with

  462. this very thing. God always hates Pride.

  463. This is what he says in Matthew. 23, verses 29 and 30 woe to you

    Matthew 23:29

  464. scribes and Pharisees Hypocrites because you build the tombs of

  465. the prophets and Adorn The Monuments of the righteous.

  466. And it right there, this was the practice of rebuilding tombs in

  467. remembrance of past Heroes they actually did that.

  468. One of the ones that had died and passed here, they would

  469. rebuild the tomb. They make a monument to them,

  470. Jesus deals with that very thing.

  471. He says, you do this, by the way, you build the tombs of the

  472. prophets and Adorn The Monuments of the righteous.

  473. That's not the problem yet. Very common for them to do that.

  474. In fact, Robertson said this. The tombs in the Kidron Valley.

  475. That are now named in honor of Zechariah Absalom and

  476. Jehoshaphat were all built at the time.

  477. That Jesus said this, Jesus was referring to the practice that

  478. they did. But remember I said, They had

  479. Pride. They thought they were better

  480. than the others and this is what they said.

  481. If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have

  482. been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.

  483. You see the hypocrisy? Let's build the monument.

  484. For those Heroes of days. Gone by those prophets of old

  485. and then if we were there, we would have done what they did.

  486. We're much better than that, we're much holier than that.

  487. We would have done that. That's not what we would have

  488. done. We wouldn't have killed the

  489. prophets as our fathers had done.

  490. We would have even thought of doing something like that.

  491. We're holier than that, we're better than that.

  492. This is the ugly pretence of spiritual Pride, build monuments

  493. to honor men in the past and then claim to be better.

  494. Now, the Lord is going to fire a shot.

  495. As we wrap up our thoughts, he's going to fire a shot.

  496. I'm gonna tell you something. The Lord didn't fire shots over

  497. the bow. This is a direct hit.

  498. You want to talk about being direct?

  499. Sometimes people don't want to be direct or sometimes people

  500. resent. When somebody's direct we get

  501. will direct your. This is what Jesus said

  502. therefore you are witnesses against your selves that you are

  503. the sons of those who murdered the prophets.

  504. What's he saying is he's not beating around the bush.

  505. What he's saying is like father like son you've just said, hey

  506. look at these great prophets but we wouldn't have done what

  507. they've done. No.

  508. Like father like son, you're the same way.

  509. Why is that? They're about to murder the

  510. greatest Prophet the world ever knew that was Jesus Christ.

  511. He's telling them. Not only are you like them?

  512. They killed the prophets, but you're worse.

  513. You're absolutely worse like father.

  514. Like son. Here's another Direct Hit.

  515. Here's a command. And if you're not careful, you

  516. can fly right by right past this Jesus the word of God here is in

  517. the tenths of a command. He says, fill up the word fill

  518. up means do it fill up then the measure of your father's guilt.

  519. In other words that's what you came to do.

  520. Jesus is commanding them to get on with it to push his

  521. crucifixion. Don't you see that?

  522. Jesus was not the victim? Jesus was in control.

  523. Jesus commands them to go ahead and do it.

  524. You know why? Because Jesus knew it was God's

  525. will that he would be sacrificed for the sins of the world and it

  526. would be on a Roman cross. He would have to be lifted up

  527. Old Testament, prophecies pointing toward that very event.

  528. It had to happen. When Jesus in The Garden of

  529. Gethsemane. Was praying to his father.

  530. He said, father if it is possible, let this cup pass from

  531. me. You've heard me say this before

  532. the cup there is more than just the cup of suffering.

  533. I think what was worse, was the very fact that the sins of the

  534. world would be placed on perfect Jesus.

  535. He would have to do it by himself and God's face would be

  536. turned away. He would be by himself.

  537. And that was the only time our Lord was ever alone on gothis,

  538. brow on the cross dying for the sins of the world.

  539. He despised the shame, he did, all of that, his Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  540. 12 tells us, these were horrible things that he would have to

  541. endure. That was God's will.

  542. And I want you to know something if you're here today, take that

  543. personally. Jesus died for your sins.

  544. Personally, and for mine personally.

  545. Jesus is telling them get it over with get on with it.

  546. Jesus also said my life, no one takes.

  547. No man takes my life. He said my life, I freely give

  548. that's why on the cross. When Jesus was about to die, he

  549. said, it's finished. I've done it, it's accomplished.

  550. He bowed his head and gave up The Ghost, and that is that he

  551. said into thy hands. I commend my spirit.

  552. Jesus gave his life, but he knew they had to do their part.

  553. So he says in a command Just do it.

  554. Our Lord was totally in control, okay?

  555. In closing what we learn, what do we learn from this?

  556. In application. Number one, God always looks at

  557. the heart, sometimes we look at the outside, that's all we look

  558. at is the appearance, but God always looks at the heart.

  559. Number two, if we fix the inside, we automatically fix the

  560. outside. Let's fix the source and not the

  561. symptom system takes care of itself.

  562. Number three, don't appear beautiful on the outside but

  563. inwardly be rotten like dead men's bones.

  564. Be authentic, be an authentic Christian be the same on the

  565. inside as you are. The outside and number 4.

  566. Oh yes. Let's keep all.

  567. The commands of God, the details do matter.

  568. Keep all the commands of God, but don't neglect.

  569. The weightier matters, which are Justice, mercy and Faith.

  570. Keep it all. We thank you for listening to
