  1. I want to talk about the story of David and Goliath and this is

  2. a story that is certainly familiar to us one that we

  3. probably learned as a child parents love to tell their

  4. children about this story of David and Goliath and preachers

  5. teach about it and many lessons have been given certainly on the

  6. subject. Everyone loves the story of an

  7. underdog. You know that we like to root

  8. for the underdog team and if they win The game or they win

  9. the match, then that's just great because they were

  10. considered to be the lesser of the two teams or lesser of the

  11. two that were that were fighting against each other.

  12. But this story really isn't a story of David as an underdog.

  13. The moment that David stepped foot out onto this Valley with

  14. Goliath. Goliath was doomed to die.

  15. Here's a little history. This history is a story of the

  16. introduction of David to becoming the king of Israel

  17. before the story of David and Goliath happened.

  18. Samuel had been commissioned to go to Bethlehem and anoint David

  19. as the next king of Israel and we can read about that in Samuel

  20. 16 and verses 1 through 13. Samuel was afraid to go into

  21. Bethlehem to even do this because he was afraid, he was

  22. going to get put to death of Saul found out what was going

  23. on, but God told him you go in there and you take care of it.

  24. Anyway, tell them that you're there doing something else and

  25. you're offering sacrifice to God but I want the next king

  26. anointed there. So King Saul had certainly lost

  27. favor with God due to his unlawful burnt offerings we

  28. notice in first Samuel 13 verses 7 through 14, we're just going

    1 Samuel 13:7–14

  29. to read verses 13 through 14 and Samuel said to Saul, you have

  30. done foolishly. You have not kept the

  31. Commandment of the Lord, your God, which he commanded you for

  32. now. The Lord would have established

  33. your kingdom over Israel forever.

  34. But now, your kingdom shall not continue.

  35. You the Lord has sought for him. A man after his own heart and

  36. the Lord has commanded him to be Commander over his people,

  37. because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.

  38. Also we find in first Samuel 15 of verses 10 through 26.

  39. That's all had. Also kept the plunder of the

  40. defeating of the amalekites notice verse 26.

  41. First Samuel 15, but Samuel said to Saul, I will not return with

  42. you. For you have rejected the word

  43. of the Lord and the Lord has rejected you from being King

  44. over Israel. So David was to be the next

  45. king. We're going to have that.

  46. We noticed that happens but Saul's reign as king is going to

  47. diminish and go away. Let's do a little bit of

  48. description about David. David was the List of Jesse's

  49. eight sons and was a Shepherd probably somewhere in the

  50. neighborhood of 15 to 18. When this story is told, the

  51. Bible describes him as in first Samuel, 16 and 12 Ruddy with

  52. bright eyes and good-looking. So both most Bible scholars

  53. agree that David had some kind of reddish tint to his hair that

  54. he was healthy and handsome, according to whatever handsome

  55. was in that day. Some people think certain people

  56. are handsome and beauty and some would disagree about that even

  57. though, God doesn't choose someone based on their outward.

  58. Parents. David fit that description, God

  59. doesn't look at the outward, man.

  60. As sometimes as he mentioned to Samuel in the previous 7th,

  61. verse it says, but the Lord said to Samuel, do not look at his

  62. appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused

  63. him for the Lord, does not see a man.

  64. See, as man sees for, man, looks at the outward appearance, but

  65. the Lord looks at the heart. You know, sometimes we forget

  66. that we want, we want to and we judge people based on their

  67. outward appearance, and we don't look at the heart that that's

  68. what God was telling Samuel when you're looking for this new

  69. king. Because several people had come

  70. before, several men had come before him and Samuel thought,

  71. that that's going to be the king that's going to be the king, but

  72. God rejected them. So he kind of chastise Samuel

  73. for looking at the outward appearance parents.

  74. So Samuel had been looking at these older brothers and thought

  75. that one of them was going to be anointed king.

  76. But David appears to be small because of his youth, it is not

  77. what Samuel was really kind of looking for.

  78. He had in his own mind, he thought the Lord was going to

  79. accept. So we find that through all this

  80. Samuel or Saul is distressed after David is Anointed to be

  81. the next king. The Bible tells us in 1st

  82. Samuel, Christina verse 14, but the spirit of the Lord depart

  83. departed from Saul and a distressing spirit from the Lord

  84. troubled him. Now Saul wants one of his

  85. servants to go and search out someone that can soothe him

  86. because of this distress that he wants to find someone that can

  87. play a harp to soothe his Spirit.

  88. Then in verse 18 The one then one of the servants answered and

  89. said, look I have seen a son of Jesse, the Bethlehem a'ight who

  90. is skillful in playing a Mighty Men of Valor, a men-of-war

  91. prudent and speech, and handsome, and a handsome person

  92. and the Lord is with him. So Saul sins for David.

  93. David comes and plays his harp for King Saul and the Bible says

  94. in verses 21 through 23. So, David came to Saul and stood

  95. before him and he loved him greatly and he became his armor

  96. Bearer. Then Saul said to Jesse saying,

  97. please let David stand before me for.

  98. He has found favor in my sight and so it was whenever the

  99. spirit of God was upon Saul, that David would take a harp and

  100. play it with his hand and saw would become refreshed and well,

  101. and the distressing spirit would depart from him.

  102. So we don't know what the Bible doesn't reveal to us.

  103. What this distressing Spirit was it could have been just simple

  104. depression or anxiety or upset that that David was going to be

  105. that God that saw had lost favor with God.

  106. Could have been some kind of mental illness for all.

  107. We know, I don't know but when when David played the harp for

  108. Saul it suits him and it made him feel better.

  109. So God providentially places David in a position of

  110. importance with the King. Remember, it's through the

  111. lineage of David that Jesus is to be born.

  112. So remember that God always has a plan and he always his will is

  113. what always comes out ahead. No, it's noticed a little bit

  114. about this, the valley of elah. Now, David's set to defend God's

  115. name against this enemy and the Battle of elah is about to

  116. begin. The Philistines were a Canaanite

  117. people that inhabited Israel before the Israelites came into

  118. the Promised Land. And the Israelites were

  119. Israelites were not able to completely conquer the

  120. Canaanites and drive them out of this land.

  121. Totally Then there were battles that happened from time to time

  122. between them on a regular basis and so battling, the Philistines

  123. there was nothing new to Saul. Notice in first, Samuel 1447

  124. through 48. So Saul established his

  125. sovereignty over Israel and fought against all his enemies

  126. on every side against Moab against the people of Ammon

  127. against Edom, against the kings of Zaba, and against the

  128. Philistines, wherever he turned, he Stem.

  129. And he gathered an army and attack the amalekites and

  130. delivered Israel from the hands of those who plundered them.

  131. Noun, the seventeenth chapter of 1st Samuel, the battle of the

  132. valley of elah is about to unfold.

  133. And the time of this history, the Philistines were trying to

  134. advance further up the hill through elope.

  135. Through the Gila Valley towards the heart of Judah and take the

  136. cities of Bethlehem Jerusalem and Hebron that were inhabited

  137. by Israel. And this Valley was along the

  138. pathway that came from the sea, all the way up towards those

  139. cities and so it was a common way to travel.

  140. It was a it was a thoroughfare if you want to say and it was

  141. we're in the Valley of elah, the King Saul engaged, the

  142. Philistines to stop them. Now you can see on the map here

  143. this is just a modern-day map but you see the Dead Sea?

  144. And this this area over here is Israel but this is primarily

  145. where the Philistines were. In power over here.

  146. And it was along, this area is where Bethlehem, and and

  147. Jerusalem and Hebron are This was certainly a very important

  148. Battle For King Saul. This was a battle where the

  149. winner takes all. In other words, there would just

  150. be one battle and that would be between two Warriors, But

  151. whichever Warrior one the other would serve.

  152. So, Ends. And sometimes battles.

  153. Apparently were fought this way and don't know why other than

  154. they were just trying to save all their Manpower and instead

  155. of just killing people but so we can see how important it was

  156. that whoever the winner was they needed to win the battle.

  157. Whoever was fighting needed to win the battle.

  158. Let's notice a few more slides here.

  159. You can see here, Jerusalem up here in this area and Bethlehem,

  160. Dara down here, and then, little farther down is Hebron.

  161. Those right, over in this area is where this Valley of elah is,

  162. and it's not really that far. It's about 16 miles from

  163. Jerusalem as the crow flies and about 14 miles from the area of

  164. Bethlehem. So it's right down here in this

  165. Valley, where this all happens. This course of is a modern-day

  166. aerial photograph of the area with agriculture in that area.

  167. So here's the battle setting in 1st Samuel, 17.

  168. Now the Philistines gathered their armies together to battle

  169. and we're gathered at Soco. Soco is right over here in this

  170. hill, and there's some remnants, I guess you can find in that

  171. area right there. But that's where so Coho was,

  172. which would be long to Judah. Then Camp between SoCo and the

  173. zika which is excuse me over there.

  174. In a fees demand is what? And I don't know if that's the

  175. correct pronunciation and Saul and the men of Israel were

  176. gathered together and they camped in the valley of elah.

  177. So here's where The Philistines were on this side, Camp along

  178. here and they say, this is kind of like their encampment or

  179. maybe their support area over here in this area.

  180. But there's where all the battlefield was or the I should

  181. say, all the army of the Philistines.

  182. And here's where all the army of the Israelites were on this side

  183. and these are kind of hilly areas over here on this side.

  184. A little bit of Cliff area, right in here.

  185. And over, on this side, another Hill in, this is the valley of

  186. elah right here in the middle. And that is supposed to be or

  187. said, where the battle site was down there towards that end.

  188. These are some other pictures of kind of the surroundings of the

  189. area. Some people think that this may

  190. be the path right here with the Israelites would be up here on

  191. the top of this Cliff area, that this may have been where all the

  192. soldiers came down, and we're probably even, David may have

  193. come down that pathway. An Ela is named after what is

  194. called a terror been with tree. You hear that word used often in

  195. the Bible and it's really something that's similar to an

  196. oak tree or that variety. So now inverse Verses 4 through

  197. 7 Goliath is described and a champion went out from the camp

  198. of the Philistines. Named Goliath from gath, whose

  199. height was six cubits and a span He had a bronze helmet of helmet

  200. on his head. And it was armed with a coat of

  201. mail, and the weight of the coat, was 5000 shekels of

  202. bronze. And he had bronze armor on his

  203. legs and bronze Javelin between his shoulders.

  204. Now, the staff of his Spirit was like a Weaver's beam and his

  205. iron spear had weighed 600 shekels and a shield Bearer went

  206. before him. So some facts about Goliath is

  207. he was about nine and a half feet tall some depending on

  208. which Cuba to use to the Hebrew. Cubit is about 22 inches and

  209. sometimes Egyptian Cubit was a little bit longer, but if you

  210. even take the 22 inches and multiply that times, the amount

  211. of qubits, he was anywhere from nine and a half feet to 11 feet

  212. tall. That's what the Bible says.

  213. Now this area back here in the back the ceiling right here

  214. somewhere about Prop 8 and a half feet tall.

  215. This may be somewhere in the neighborhood of about 12 feet

  216. tall so that gives you a little bit of an idea.

  217. How large this man was His armor weighed about 125 pounds.

  218. The head of his spear weight, 15 pounds.

  219. Just the head of a spear. As probably certainly one of the

  220. best fighters, the Philistines had one Scholars are several

  221. Scholars mentioned that somewhere in the neighborhood of

  222. 250 pounds is what all the armor of Goliath Wade.

  223. Well, some of us aren't even 250 pounds and try to carry someone

  224. else with the weighs 250 pounds would certainly be a burden, the

  225. Bible describes Goliath as an undefeatable Warrior.

  226. His size is almost twice, the size of some of the of the

  227. Israelites. It would certainly take a strong

  228. man to carry all that armor into battle and he was, I guess

  229. considered probably the Ultimate Warrior.

  230. So now Gap, Goliath challenges, Israel and verses 8 through 11,

  231. then he stood and carried out to the armies of Israel and said to

  232. them. Why have you come out to line up

  233. for battle? Am I not a Philistine and you

  234. the Servants of Saul choose a man for yourselves and let him

  235. come down to me? If he is able to fight with me

  236. and kill me, then we will be your servants but if I Prevail

  237. against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants.

  238. And serve us. And the Philistine said I defy

  239. the armies of Israel, this day. Give me a man that we may fight

  240. together. So here's Israel's reaction in

  241. verse 11. When Saul and all Israel heard

  242. these words of the Philistine. They were dismayed and greatly

  243. afraid. So you know, Saul's looking at

  244. this and probably all those those soldiers were looking at

  245. this man and going like there's no way I can beat this guy.

  246. Who's going to step up? Apparently, no one and we'll

  247. find out a little bit more about that.

  248. Up until this point all the armies of Kings King Saul, there

  249. was one man that would step up to the challenge of Goliath

  250. certainly what went through their mind.

  251. If I step out there and try to fight this guy that's going to

  252. be instant death for me. it says, now David was the son of

  253. the affright of Bethlehem Judah, whose name was Jesse who had

  254. eight Sons And the man was old advanced in years in the, in the

  255. days of Soul, the three oldest sons of Jesse had gone to follow

  256. Saul to the battle, the names of his three sons, who went to the

  257. battle, where he lie about the firstborn next, to him abinadab

  258. and the third Shema, David was the youngest and the three

  259. oldest followed Saul. But David occasionally went and

  260. returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep and Bethlehem.

  261. And the Philistines Drew near and presented himself, 40 days

  262. morning and evening. So we see here that this

  263. taunting of the army of Israel had been going on for 40 days

  264. now. It would seem that one side, one

  265. side, or the other would get tired of this day after day

  266. after day, the same thing happening and maybe some would

  267. walk away, but you don't walk away in battle if you do.

  268. You're called a coward and nobody was going to do this.

  269. There's probably all kinds of you know, you're the leader of

  270. people and and and you don't want to walk away and look like

  271. and a coward and be called a coward.

  272. So wild Goliath was challenging, the army of Saul every day.

  273. For 40 days, David was home tending.

  274. His father's sheep and verse 17, then Jesse said to his son,

  275. David. Take now for your brothers and

  276. ephah of this dried grain and these 10 Loaves and run to your

  277. brothers at the camp and carry these 10 cheeses to the captain

  278. of their thousands and see how your brother's fair and bring

  279. back news of them now. Saul and they all and they and

  280. all the men of Israel were in the valley of elah fighting with

  281. the Philistines. So David Rose early in the

  282. morning, left his sheep with a keeper and took the things and

  283. went to Jesse went as Jesse had commanded him and he came to the

  284. camp. As the Army, was going out to

  285. the fight and shouting for the battle for Israel, and the

  286. Philistines had drawn up in battle array Army against Army.

  287. Now, apparently, it seems as maybe they would spend the

  288. evenings up on the hillside and maybe, then during the day, they

  289. would come down down into the valley and stand in front of

  290. each other across. From each other and then they

  291. would be taunted by Goliath saying, send somebody out here

  292. to fight me, send somebody out here to fight me so they had

  293. drawn up in battle array Army against Army.

  294. It says, and David left his supplies.

  295. In the hand of the supply keeper ran to the Army and came and

  296. greeted his brothers. Then his he talked with them.

  297. There was the champion. The Philistine of gath Goliath

  298. by name coming up from the armies of the Philistines and he

  299. spoke according to the same word.

  300. So David heard them and all the men here is real when they saw

  301. the man fled from him and murder dreadfully afraid.

  302. So, the men of Israel said, have you seen this man who has come

  303. up? Surely he's come up to defy,

  304. Israel, and it shall be, that the man who kills him, the king

  305. will enrich with great riches, will give him his daughter and

  306. give his father's house exemption from taxes in Israel.

  307. So, David spoke to the men who stood by him saying, what shall

  308. be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away.

  309. The reproach from Israel. For who is this uncircumcised

  310. Philistine that he should defy the armies of the Living?

  311. God? Here's really where somebody's

  312. got their mind in the right place and everyone else has got

  313. their mind in the wrong place. Dave is basically saying who

  314. does he think he is defined the armies of the Living God?

  315. Because David knew where his strength lied.

  316. And the people answered him in this manner saying, so shall it

  317. be done for that? The man who kills him?

  318. Now David's Brothers question what he's really doing and verse

  319. 28. Now he lie about his oldest

  320. brother heard when he spoke to the men and he lives anger was

  321. aroused against David and said why did you come down here and

  322. with whom have you left? Those few sheep in the

  323. wilderness. I know your pride and the

  324. insolence of your heart, for you've come down to C the

  325. battle. In other words, you just want to

  326. be a spectator. You don't want to be a

  327. participant, you're just talking big.

  328. Who do you think you are? You need to go back there and

  329. take care of Sheep. What's your responsibility and

  330. leave the battle up to us, as kind of what reliable same.

  331. And David said, what have I done?

  332. What have I done now? Is there not a cause or nose?

  333. Is there not a purpose for me being here?

  334. First of all, I was told by my father, to bring supplies here

  335. and to see how you folks were doing down here, how the battle

  336. was going. And if you guys were okay, is

  337. there not a Cause Then he turned from him, toward another and

  338. said, the same thing in these people answered him as the first

  339. ones did. So Saul hears about this in

  340. Psalms hymns for David. Now, when the words of David

  341. spoke, which David spoke were heard there, he reported them to

  342. Saul and he sent for him then David said to Saul that no man's

  343. heart failed because of him. Your servant will go and fight

  344. this philistine. And Saul said to David, you are

  345. not able to go against the Philistine to fight with him,

  346. you for your Youth and he a man of war from his youth, David

  347. coming up there, he wasn't on the battlefield lot lines.

  348. He wasn't up there in his armor and all this.

  349. All the rest of the Israel's were in.

  350. There are mobile armor and their their battle array.

  351. And so were the Philistines and David comes up there and

  352. basically saw saying you're just a young Man, small in stature.

  353. How in the world? Do you think you can go up

  354. against this? Great warrior.

  355. This man has been a warrior since his youth.

  356. So David now defends the ability of God.

  357. But David said to Saul your servant used to keep his

  358. father's sheep and want a lion or a bear came and took a lamb

  359. out of the flock. I went out after it and struck

  360. it and delivered the lamb from its mouth.

  361. And when it arose against me, I caught it by his beard and

  362. struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both

  363. line and bear. And this uncircumcised

  364. Philistine will be like one of them.

  365. Scene has defiled, the scene, he has defiled.

  366. The Armies of the Living, God? again, here's that statement

  367. again by David Moreover David said, the Lord, who delivered me

  368. from the Paw of the lion and from the Paw of the bear, he

  369. will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine and Saul said to

  370. David go and the Lord be with you.

  371. I want to notice something that came to mind here for me.

  372. Anyway. Saul has now put all of his

  373. faith in winning this battle in this young man.

  374. He has all his his army there and they have all their armor

  375. and all their swords, and all their Spears and all their

  376. Shields and everything else. But now this young man comes up,

  377. that's a shepherd. And Saul is now putting his

  378. faith in this young man. If he loses this battle, they

  379. will serve the Philistines. But I think Saul came to

  380. realization because he's been thinking in one way.

  381. David is thinking a different way that he has God's blessing

  382. in this battle and Saul, I believe recognizes that now, So

  383. David prepares for battle in verse 38.

  384. So Salk load David with his armor and he put a bronze helmet

  385. on his head. He also closed him with a coat

  386. of mail David fasten his sword to his armor and tried to walk

  387. for. He had not tested them and David

  388. said to Saul, I can't wear I cannot walk with these for I

  389. have not tested them so David took them off.

  390. So, no doubt Saul's armor was the best armor.

  391. I mean, you, you want to protect the king?

  392. And the king is the one that's in charge.

  393. I would think the king would have the best armor of any of

  394. his Warriors and this is what Saul wants David to wear.

  395. But David can't even put this stuff on and do what he needs to

  396. do. We can't be nimble.

  397. He can't be fast and and take on this giant of a, man with this.

  398. So he takes off all of this protection.

  399. Then he took his staff in his hand and he chose for himself

  400. five, smooth stones from the brook and put them in a

  401. shepherd's bag and a pouch, which he had.

  402. And his sling was in his hand. and he drew near to the

  403. Philistine, so the Philistine came and began Drawing Near to

  404. David and The Man Who Bore The Shield went before him That

  405. that's not before David, that's before the Philistine.

  406. And when the Philistine looked about and saw David, he

  407. disdained him for, he was only a youth Ruddy and good looking I'm

  408. sure the Goliath was really quite surprised that Saul would

  409. send this young man with no armor on out to do battle with

  410. him. If you're going to fight a

  411. battle like this, you would think Saul would send the very

  412. best soldier with all his armor with all his weapons as and and

  413. to Goliath it, probably seemed like it just a waste of time.

  414. So he goes on to say. So the Philistine said today of

  415. David am I a dog? That you would come to me with

  416. sticks. And the Philistine cursed David

  417. by his gods, and the Philistine said to David come, come to me

  418. and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the

  419. beasts of the field. Then David said, to the

  420. Philistine, you come to me with a sword.

  421. With a spear and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of

  422. the Lord of hosts, the god of the armies of Israel, whom you

  423. have defied This day, the Lord will deliver you into my hand

  424. and I will strike you and take your head from you.

  425. And this day, I will give the carcasses of the camp of the

  426. Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the

  427. earth that all the Earth. May know that there is a God in

  428. Israel. Then all this assembly shall

  429. know that the Lord does not say. This does not say The Sword.

  430. And the spear with sword and spear for the battle is the

  431. Lord's and he will go, and he will give you into our hands.

  432. So, he tells this philistine. It really doesn't matter what

  433. you have. It really doesn't make any

  434. difference. What you have, how much armor

  435. you have? How many weapons you have?

  436. I am here in the name of God. The Lord of Israel.

  437. And we and I will take you today and kill you basically, is what

  438. he's saying. David knew his power.

  439. Came from God and was not the least worried about the outcome.

  440. He knew where he gained his strength.

  441. It was God God was on his side regardless of the weapons that

  442. Goliath had and regardless even what David had with him.

  443. Being a Shepherd, David knew how to use a sling.

  444. He probably spent many hours out there just watching the Sheep.

  445. You know, this isn't a 24-hour day even though you got to be

  446. there 24 hours a day, if you want to say that.

  447. But you don't have to be busy all the time watching sheep, eat

  448. grass, so he had probably plenty of time to use this sling and

  449. know how to use it to ward off the the, the things that would

  450. be danger to the ship to the flock.

  451. One thing, the leader in war wants to do is he wants to never

  452. do as underestimate the enemy and Goliath stood there.

  453. With all these armor with a sword with a shield with all

  454. this in his hand and David stood before before him was simply a

  455. staff and a sling and and five stones, but David had god with

  456. him. So it was when the Philistine

  457. arose and came and Drew near to David.

  458. The David hurried and ran toward the Army to meet the Philistine.

  459. Then David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone and he

  460. slung it and struck Philistine in his forehead so that the

  461. stone sank into his forehead. And he fell on his face to the

  462. Earth. So David prevailed over the

  463. Philistine with a sling and a stone and struck the Philistine

  464. and killed him, but there was no sword in the hand of David.

  465. Therefore David ran and stood over the Philistine, took his

  466. sword and Drew it out of its sheath and killed him and cut

  467. off his head with it. You know, even before.

  468. The stone left, the sling of David God's plan.

  469. And God's power was in that stone with David.

  470. God guided that stone I believe and made sure it hit the spot

  471. exactly where God wanted it to go and that was right in the

  472. middle of his forehead and it sank deep into his head, the

  473. power of God was in that stone because God knew what was going

  474. to be the outcome. And David knew God had the power

  475. to do, what, what God wanted and that was at this Philistine be

  476. put to death. And the Philistines saw that

  477. their Champion was dead, they fled now the men of Israel and

  478. Judah arose and shouted and pursued the Philistines.

  479. As far as the entrance of the valley and to the gates of

  480. ekron, and the wounded of the Philistines fell along the road

  481. to share him, even as far as gath and ekron, then the

  482. children of Israel returned from chasing the Philistines and they

  483. plundered their tents and David took the head of the Philistine

  484. and brought it to Jerusalem. But he put his armor in his

  485. tent. So what is the lesson for us?

  486. One of the things that we can gather from this is better to

  487. trust in God, rather than men the Israel, it's Israelites had

  488. grown tired of God's style of leadership, and they wanted a

  489. King instead of judges to rule over them.

  490. So, so God gave them King Saul. The problem was the earth

  491. Israelites put their trust in King Saul and not in God Saul

  492. was everything that Israelites wanted.

  493. Saul from what I understand was was a big man, but eventually a

  494. bigger man comes along and a bigger man, showed up solve

  495. failed here in the story of David and Goliath Saul.

  496. And his army were putting their faith in man rather than God,

  497. they were putting their trust in King Saul.

  498. Instead of God, David comes along and has total faith in God

  499. is able to accomplish in a few minutes.

  500. What's all had been dealing with for 40 days?

  501. Notice Psalm 118 in verses 8, through 9, it is better to trust

  502. in the Lord than to put confidence in men, it is better

  503. to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes.

  504. That's what the problem was as they had put their trust in

  505. Saul. Number two, it's better to trust

  506. God's methods, rather than man's David rejected.

  507. Saul's armor and used nothing but a sling and a staff, and God

  508. wanted Israel to see that the people must trust in him and not

  509. big men. Now, if David had put on all

  510. this armor and went out there and fought this battle, they

  511. were thought, well, he was lucky.

  512. The God made sure that he the David had the least of what he

  513. needed, but had the most power and what that was and that is

  514. just a simple sling and a stone. So they must trust God's methods

  515. and not man's method. Some people today put too much

  516. trust in men. Big men are big, preachers, big

  517. churches megachurches. If you want us all to say Paul

  518. said in in the Corinthians. First Corinthians 11:13 11

    1 Corinthians 11:13

  519. through 1st Corinthians 1 11 through 13 for.

  520. It has been declared to me concerning you my brethren by

  521. those of Chloe's house that there are contentions among you.

  522. Now, I say this, that each of you says, I am Paul, or I am of

  523. Apollo's or I am of cephas, or I am of Christ is Christ.

  524. Divided was Paul crucified for you, or were you baptized in the

  525. name of Paul? See some follow these

  526. charismatic preachers. He's charismatic charismatic

  527. churches because it's what they like, it's what they want.

  528. We're not baptized into them. We're not baptized into

  529. charismatic, preachers or men were baptized into Christ.

  530. Our loyalty is to Christ just as David's loyalty was to God and

  531. Saul had forgotten that number three.

  532. It's better to trust God's method in our service to God

  533. after David hit Goliath with the stone.

  534. First Samuel 17 and 50 says, but there was no sword in this hand

  535. in the hand of David. This David really, this real

  536. statement really kind of Wondered why?

  537. It was said again because we already knew that, that when

  538. David was putting all the Saul's armor on that, he left it there.

  539. And all he took him with him, was a staff sling, and five

  540. Stones. So, we already knew that David

  541. didn't have a sword with him. So, why would a man go into

  542. battle? If he didn't really need

  543. something, you'd be just taking extra stuff that you weren't

  544. going to use it. Be extra cumbersome to you, but

  545. see God already knew what was going to happen.

  546. That he would need a sword and a sword to be provided.

  547. The sword from Goliath that was already there.

  548. All in all, it happened is David slew him, David knew the outcome

  549. and this battle before he stepped onto the field.

  550. So the point is the David used. An unconventional weapon when

  551. everyone else was looking at him wondering why he isn't using the

  552. conventional weapon and armor of the day.

  553. He used the weapon. The God wanted him to use not

  554. man's or Saul's wisdom and weapons.

  555. He put his trust in God and not man, we can't put our trust in

  556. the Conventional Weapons that the world has today, that

  557. attracts people such as the entertainment of the big mega

  558. churches human, philosophies human achievements and so on.

  559. These things certainly attract large audiences and worldly

  560. minded people to worldly-minded religions that will make them

  561. feel good but those things are not going to save us.

  562. Second Corinthians, 10 verses 3 through 5 for though, we walk in

    2 Corinthians 10:3–5

  563. the flesh. We do not war, according to the

  564. flesh for the weapons of our Warfare are not carnal, But

  565. Mighty in God, for pulling down of strongholds, casting down

  566. arguments and every High thing that exalts itself against the

  567. knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to The

  568. Obedience of Christ. So what is the weapon God wants

  569. us to use the weapon that we should always use and put our

  570. trust in is the word of God. It's the gospel of Christ that

  571. we can always put trust in the same lessons that were taught

  572. years and years and years and centuries ago are still the same

  573. lessons and still the same truth today and we can always put our

  574. trust in that that it will always be the same.

  575. The word does not change the word of God does not change and

  576. we can trust it. The weapons of man cannot be

  577. trusted because someone always seem to come up with a better

  578. weapon but there's no better weapon than the word of God and

  579. the gospel of Christ because it is the power of God unto

  580. salvation. Romans 1 over 6.

  581. We are saved through the gospel if we hold fast to it.

  582. First Corinthians 15 verses 1 and 2.

    1 Corinthians 15:1

  583. We are born again through the Living Word.

  584. And First Peter 1 verse 23, the gospel sets us free, Romans 6,

    1 Peter 1:23

  585. and verses 17 and 18. The gospel equips us for every

  586. good work. Second Timothy 3 and verses 16

  587. and 17. The gospel is our weapon.

  588. Ephesians 6 and verse 17. The gospel is simply the simple

  589. sling and a stone that we use against all the evil things and

  590. spiritual Giants in this world and all day.

  591. Needed was trusting in God and that's all the same that we need

  592. today is trusting Our God. The role will tell you that you

  593. need more than the simple gospel of Christ.

  594. They will ridicule for, for using it only but look, what

  595. David did when he trusted in God and not man.

  596. You may be made fun of you may be ridiculed for living the

  597. Christian Life. David was ridiculed for standing

  598. there before Goliath was with a simple sling and stove, the

  599. Goliath just made fun of me, you may be made fun of in your

  600. Christian Living your Christian Life.

  601. First Corinthians, 12 verse 18, for the message of the Cross, is

    1 Corinthians 12:18

  602. foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are

  603. being saved, it is the power of God first Corinthians 1 verse 25

    1 Corinthians 1:25

  604. because the foolishness of God is weaker than men.

  605. The weakness of God is stronger than men.

  606. See Israel's Faith was in Saul. The king, they always wanted to

  607. and looked up to but Saul had lost favor with God and David

  608. was the to be the next king of Israel.

  609. Because King Saul couldn't save Israel.

  610. He didn't have God's support behind him anymore, it was David

  611. and only, God could do that. God used an armless youth with

  612. unconventional weapons and what seemed to be foolish.

  613. Weapons to defeat a giant Philistine for the purpose of

  614. letting all of Israel know that God is the one that they should

  615. trust in. Not man, it was for that

  616. purpose. That the directing of Israel's

  617. Faith was to be directed back to God.
