  1. Our lesson is simply entitled love.

  2. In fact, we're going to be focusing on First Corinthians,

  3. the 13th chapter and we're going to read just a few verses.

  4. What I'd like to do is I'd like to break down Verses 4 through

  5. 8. We often read the chapter of

  6. love as it is called and as we read this and we talked about

  7. it, we typically talk about the context.

  8. We talk about the end of the chapter.

  9. By love, will never cease. We talked about various things,

  10. but what I want to do this morning, Because I want to focus

  11. of how these definitions. The attributes of Love, apply to

  12. you. And me, I think that's really

  13. important. How do they act out in our lives

  14. today? Not just how it applied to them,

  15. but how does it apply to us? This moment and as a way of

  16. introduction like to read from Hebrews the sixth chapter and

  17. verses 1, the Bible says therefore leaving the discussion

  18. of the elementary principles of Christ.

  19. Let us go to on to Perfection not laying again, the foundation

  20. of repentance. It's from dead works of Faith

  21. towards God and I hope by the end of this lesson.

  22. This verse will make sense to you.

  23. What it means is that we're not going to talk about the very

  24. basics of Christianity, but we're going to go on to

  25. Perfection when it go on to completion and I think loves one

  26. of those ways that we do that. If you would turn your Bibles

  27. over to 1st Corinthians, the 13th chapter and verses for like

  28. to read these verses as a way of kind of focusing.

  29. What we're about to do. First Corinthians 13, starting

  30. in verse 4. Love suffers long and is kind

  31. love does not envy. Love does not parade itself, is

  32. not puffed up. Does not behave itself.

  33. Does not behave rudely, does not seek its own is not provoked,

  34. thinketh no evil does not rejoice in iniquity, but

  35. rejoices in the truth Bears, all things believes all things,

  36. hopes all these endures, all things love Never fails.

  37. And so these are the attributes. I'd like to break down to be

  38. completely honest with you. I don't think I'm going to get

  39. through them all. It's a lot of information here

  40. to be talked about but I I want everyone to know at the end of

  41. this I want to give a little test to us.

  42. It's a love test. Now don't be alarmed.

  43. I'm not gonna hand out papers. I'm not going to answer you, ask

  44. you to give me answers, but I am going to give you a test and I

  45. want you to answer it within yourself.

  46. Do you? Show love as a Christian and so

  47. the first characteristic of love says that love suffers long.

  48. Well, the tells us a great wealth of information.

  49. First of all, it tells us that love is patient.

  50. The patient's is a very difficult thing to have

  51. sometimes especially when you're going through hard times, but it

  52. also has a deeper meaning, it means to be long tempered that's

  53. a word. We don't really use an English

  54. being long temper. What does that mean?

  55. Mean, well, it's the opposite of what it means to be

  56. short-tempered, we know what it is to have that person in our

  57. life that short-tempered right. You don't want to go ask him a

  58. question. You don't want to go around him

  59. because well, he's short-tempered, he's gonna get

  60. mad, you know. Have you ever seen somebody like

  61. that? That really short-tempered.

  62. They tried to show you something.

  63. I know a number of people at work like this, they show you

  64. something that just expect you to remember the 30 steps and he

  65. just showed you and when you ask them a question to get all

  66. irritated at you, The first characteristic of love says that

  67. it is long tempered. It's the opposite of this.

  68. It is patient with people. Remember that verse in Matthew

  69. 18? 22 it says how often should we

  70. forgive our brother? Remember that verse that little

  71. Parable? Jesus gives Peter said well I

  72. have four shot, forgive my brother seven times.

  73. Jesus said no, Seventy Times Seven, he goes on and gives a

  74. parable. They simply means that we had to

  75. forgive people numbers of times and limited amount just like

  76. Christ forgives us, our God, forgives us and say how hard it

  77. is when somebody does something ill against us to forgive them.

  78. It's hard, isn't it? I don't know about you but when

  79. somebody does something that I feel that is unjust and and it

  80. hurts my feelings, it is hard to be long tempered.

  81. But the Bible says that Christians are long tempered we

  82. consider, we weigh the facts. We endure, no matter what is

  83. going on or surrounding us. We are patient.

  84. James says, like this and I love James, James is such a practical

  85. letter. I love how direct and blunt

  86. James writing is James Wanted for says, but let patience have

  87. her perfect work that ye may be perfect, and complete lacking

  88. nothing. See love is absolute patience.

  89. And so with that comes kindness and all the other attributes

  90. we're about to talk about. So the very first attribute of

  91. love is kind of an encompassing idea of everything else that's

  92. about to follow. So the question is are we

  93. patient? When we're in a situation that

  94. is beyond our control, you know, I was trying to think of a real

  95. good example of this. Think of a concentration camps

  96. during World War 2. You can kiss, all you could say

  97. well those people had long-suffering.

  98. Well yes that's true. That was very difficult for

  99. those people to go through that. but what this is talking about

  100. is, when you're in that situation, you choose To be

  101. long-suffering you choose how you behave.

  102. You don't get mad or frustrated, No Matter What man does to you,

  103. no matter how they treat you. This is the characteristic of

  104. love and I think out of all the ones that we're going to speak

  105. about this is probably one of the most difficult ones who

  106. achieve because it requires a great deal of self-control.

  107. These verses go on and it says that love is kind.

  108. Now I've heard this idea that Christians had to be kind and I

  109. to be honest with you, I started trying to think of examples and

  110. I started looking up definitions and I was like, well what does

  111. it really mean to be kind, does it mean trying to please other

  112. people? Is that what kindness is?

  113. Well, no. Does it mean that we need to

  114. give gifts or to do good things to people, expecting something

  115. in return? Is that what kindness is?

  116. I don't think so. So what does it mean to be kind?

  117. What does it mean to have the characteristics of love of

  118. kindness? Well, it means to be mellowed.

  119. Hints love is not sharp tongue. Love is soft-spoken and it is

  120. considerate of people. Now I want to Define what I mean

  121. by this, because I really struggled with this, with myself

  122. of trying to find what it really means to be kind.

  123. And I think a lot of times we mix kindness up with being the

  124. nice guy, and let me explain this being the nice guy.

  125. That's the person that really does.

  126. Nice things for selfish reasons. He's the person that won't tell

  127. you when you're doing something wrong because he would be afraid

  128. to hurt your feelings. The relationship.

  129. He's the person that maybe we'll give a gift expecting something

  130. in return. He's the person at work.

  131. That always is Buddy buddies with everybody but you can tell

  132. he's in sincere. In other words it comes from a

  133. selfish act. That is not what Paul is

  134. speaking about here. What are you speaking about?

  135. Is the opposite Kindness is something we do because we

  136. choose to do it. It is not done because it

  137. benefits Us in some way we do it because it's the right thing to

  138. do. So what does that mean?

  139. What means that when we pay somebody a compliment we mean it

  140. when we go and help somebody move or help somebody do this or

  141. that, whatever it maybe we don't do it expecting something in

  142. return. That's kindness.

  143. Now that's a hard thing to do because it requires being

  144. patient. Doesn't not the greatest example

  145. of this is the Good Samaritan. Even call that parable of Jesus

  146. giving about the Good Samaritan. Now there's a whole wealth of

  147. information is lessons on lessons.

  148. You can talk about here, but there was three men who walked

  149. by this man, that was suffering. The first one, paid no attention

  150. to him. The second said that he examined

  151. it enough to kind of know what was going on and chose not to

  152. help and he went on, but what the third guy do?

  153. Well, you helped him. He picked him up.

  154. He took him to an end. He gave money, he said, take

  155. care of this, man. Here's a lump sum of money.

  156. If it requires more money, when I get back, it doesn't matter.

  157. Do what you can to help this, man.

  158. Now, that's real kindness. He had preparation.

  159. He was ready to do, right by God.

  160. And he expected nothing in return.

  161. Matthew 7 verses 12, he says therefore whatever you want man

    Matthew 7:12

  162. to do to. You do also to them for, this is

  163. the law in the prophet. That's the golden rule of

  164. Christianity, treat other people as you want to be treated treat

  165. people with kindness because that's the attribute of love.

  166. He goes on and I think out of all the lists that he gives

  167. here, this is probably the worst one and he says love does.

  168. Not envy. Now, if you're sitting here

  169. today, you think you can be a little envious of somebody just

  170. a little bit and still be a Christian.

  171. I have another thing coming for you What does it mean to Envy is

  172. jealousy, bitterness. Its hatred of prosperity of

  173. other people. That's literally what means to

  174. be envious. Now doesn't sound like those are

  175. things that a Christian should be is, does it not it's the

  176. opposite of contentment? People who feel this way, we'll

  177. never find happiness. I can promise you that there was

  178. much psychology around this idea and they will never be content

  179. and that's the idea of being a Christian is being content.

  180. Whether we're poor or Rich, no matter what I want in life is

  181. where to be content and so we as Christians are not envious.

  182. See the problem with being Envy it's we start looking externally

  183. as set of internally and when we start looking at other people,

  184. we start evaluating what their prosperity and things like this.

  185. There's a problem there's a fundamental problem with this.

  186. We're not comparing Apples to Apples.

  187. I'm not you, you're not me. We're not the same people we

  188. did. We weren't raised the same.

  189. We don't come from the same background.

  190. We don't have the same network. We're different.

  191. And when we start looking to other people to solve our

  192. problems that we'll only if I had this only, if this happened

  193. we run into a real problem because that's kind of the root

  194. of where jealousy comes from. James says it like this Jamie

  195. says and 3 verse 16 says, for envy and self-seeking exist,

  196. confusion and every evil things are there and how true of a

  197. story that is Romans 1 and 29. Listen to this, I love this

  198. because this is what God thinks about being Envy.

  199. The envious Romans 129 says being filled with all

  200. unrighteousness. He's listening off of a list of

  201. sins here. All unrighteousness sexual

  202. immorality wickedness covetousness, maliciousness full

  203. of envy Do you know what the next word is murder?

  204. The very next word is murder. God sees no different from us.

  205. Being full of envy and murdering someone.

  206. There is no difference in God's sight.

  207. Well, let's give it an example of this, and then we'll move on.

  208. We all remember that story back in the Old Testament of Cain and

  209. Abel, right? Cain became jealous of his

  210. brother and it welled up in him. He was looking externally trying

  211. to figure out. Well, why am I not Prosper?

  212. Prospering like my brother is why don't I have those things?

  213. Why don't I have favored in God's sight, he knew what he

  214. should be doing when you read and you kind of study that help

  215. came knew what he should be doing.

  216. He fact he had a conversation with God and he wasn't satisfied

  217. with what God had to tell him. God.

  218. Basically, you know, you look within stop looking without the

  219. Bible says that his countenance fell, he became long face, he

  220. became sad And boiled up a bitterness jealousy, and came to

  221. a point that he murdered his brother.

  222. There's pause and think about that for just a moment.

  223. I'm close with my family, I don't know about you, but I'm

  224. close with my brothers. I could never imagine being so

  225. jealous of somebody else's Prosperity that I would murder

  226. them, especially my brother He goes on and he says, love does

  227. not parade itself. That is that love does not

  228. boast. Love does not boast or brag

  229. about itself really. This is the outward appearance

  230. of the next point which is the idea of Pride.

  231. So this is pride boiled up to the point that you think other

  232. people should hear what you have to say and see your

  233. accomplishment. That's what it means to be

  234. boasting or to be bragging. It is the opposite of humility.

  235. It's the complete opposite. Humility means to understand

  236. your shortcomings and to overcome your pride.

  237. I don't know if you've ever done that before, sit down, and

  238. really evaluated yourself, and said, Where's my shortcomings?

  239. Where's my problems? You know, it's really easy to

  240. point a finger at somebody like this is it.

  241. Well, you got this problem. You've got that for all.

  242. I see that but I tell you it is much more difficult to point

  243. your finger up yourself and see your own faults.

  244. Because you have to admit, you are wrong, and that's a hard

  245. thing for us to do. And so Paul says that love is

  246. not boastful, does not brag it evaluates itself and it realizes

  247. his shortcomings. And when you do that, let me

  248. tell you, it's nearly impossible to brag.

  249. Humility means to be powerful, but in control, I pause and

  250. think about this Christians and all of their being bring their

  251. mind, the body, their actions, everything about us.

  252. We bring in subjection. Not only to ourselves but to

  253. God's word. If you think that's an easy

  254. thing to do, you got another thing coming, it's hard to

  255. change your mindset, it's hard to change your language.

  256. It's hard to change your behavior, it's not easy.

  257. Christians are really some powerful people.

  258. If you look at it that way, Jesus being the most powerful

  259. person to ever exist yet, he was the humblest person, harmonious

  260. human being that will ever be Humility.

  261. Is control over what you have and realizing your shortcomings.

  262. Proverbs 16:18, says Pride goes before the destruction, a

    Proverbs 16:18

  263. haughty spirit before the fall and true.

  264. That is James. Once again, one of my favorite

  265. letters. James 4:16.

    James 4:16

  266. Says but now, your boast, your boast, in your arrogance, all

  267. such boasting is evil. Boasting is an evil thing and it

  268. is not what God wants for you. And I It's when our pride builds

  269. up and it explodes in an outward appearance.

  270. And you know, these people every time you talk to him, they'll

  271. tell you about their prosperity, you have met those people.

  272. No matter what's going on, they'll find a way to fit in

  273. hola. I landed this till, oh, I did

  274. this. So I got in with this person ol,

  275. I sold this famous person shook their hand.

  276. They'll do something to tell you about the great works.

  277. Because they think they're so important.

  278. The Bible says love does not parade itself.

  279. That is that love does not brag the root of this is the next

  280. point that Paul makes it says love is not puffed up, that

  281. means literally to blow oneself up.

  282. It is pride at its root. The word refers to in an

  283. inflated concept of One's Own importance.

  284. That's really what it is. You think yourself more

  285. important than what you are. That's Pride.

  286. That's what it means to be. Puffed up.

  287. Hey, so the Bible says here, that love does not do that.

  288. That is not our characteristic. So not only does the Bible can

  289. dim the outward appearance of boasting or Pride but it also

  290. condemns the inward feeling of pride.

  291. Listen to what Romans 12 and 3 says in the middle there, he

  292. says, not to think of yourself more highly than you want to,

  293. and that's true. We need to take a hard look at

  294. ourselves. When we start thinking, we're

  295. special, or we start thinking, we got everything figured out or

  296. that we start thinking that, you know.

  297. Look at me. We have another thing coming.

  298. Like I said, this is the source of where bragging comes from.

  299. Think about it from this perspective. these people had

  300. spiritual gifts because Paul is talking to a congregation and

  301. these people had, you know, the power of tongues the power of

  302. knowledge, the power of healing, all these spiritual gifts, And

  303. some did it? And Paul is telling them look,

  304. especially Geo to those who have spiritual gifts.

  305. Don't be proud of it. Don't think of yourself more

  306. highly than you ought to. I'll bring that in today just

  307. because we're educated just because we're no more of the

  308. Bible are just because we know more of life does not mean that

  309. we should think of ourselves higher than we ought to we're

  310. all the same in God's sight. An example of this, in the

  311. somebody I work with some time ago, I'll never forget this guy.

  312. It was a co-worker once he'd walk around with his chest.

  313. Puffed out his shoulders back, his nose slightly in the air and

  314. every time he spoke to you he just spoke down to you.

  315. If you have met somebody like that, just nothing.

  316. Everything that comes out of their mouth.

  317. No matter how innocent it makes sound was always talking down to

  318. you as he was better. And it was no small thing in the

  319. office. Everybody knew this guy.

  320. In fact, he himself joked about him being prideful if you don't

  321. know me, I'm a very curious person.

  322. I like to ask questions and so I must have added up one time and

  323. I decided I was going to go ask him why he was like this and so

  324. I got them alone. I said, why do you why are you

  325. so prideful? Why are you like this?

  326. What's the point? I'll never forget this response.

  327. He said, I act this way because I deserve respect and that's

  328. what he thought of himself. I deserve respect.

  329. Here's the fact. The man was not respectable,

  330. that's why no one showed him respect.

  331. And if you're walking around with pride in your life, let me

  332. tell you. People can see it and they

  333. understand it. And you will not be respected in

  334. Man's eyes or in God's eyes, but we walk around with pride.

  335. The Bible goes on here and it says does not behave itself,

  336. Ruth, Lee. This is a big one because I've

  337. ran into this. I'll tell you I came from the

  338. world 15 years ago and I've had some mean, things done to me

  339. before I became a Christian, but the most hurtful things that

  340. have ever happened to me came from my fellow Christians.

  341. Being rude. What does it mean to be rude to

  342. be rude? Love does not conduct yourself

  343. in a way that is contrary to. What is acceptable?

  344. So, it's a little bit more than just plain being rude.

  345. It really means not to do something that is to the

  346. contrary to what is acceptable by most people.

  347. Now that plays out in various of ways in our life, it simply

  348. means to be unseemly. It is disgraceful.

  349. Dishonorable disrespectful. It is somebody who doesn't care?

  350. What? Others think?

  351. I remember a story that a preacher told me one time and I

  352. hope this is not a I really do. I don't think so if anybody in

  353. here but I hope it's not us. I'm not going to give names, I

  354. don't want anybody to know what I'm talking about, but this

  355. preacher was holding a gospel meeting.

  356. And a bunch of the Brethren decided Saturday morning, they

  357. were going to get together and go to the Cracker Barrel.

  358. They were all going to have coffee together and they would

  359. just going to have a good time. So the big old long table of all

  360. these men got together and they all have coffee.

  361. Now, this place was absolutely packed.

  362. Evidently there were a number of people who decided not to show

  363. up to work that happens from time to time.

  364. And so these young lady was the only one of the only server

  365. there and she was running around with her head cut off like a

  366. chicken. She was trying to get plates

  367. out. She was trying to fill coffee.

  368. Now, here's the sad part of the story, and Elder of this

  369. congregation was sitting at this table.

  370. And he didn't think his coffee was getting filled fast enough

  371. and he called this young lady over and he, let her know what

  372. he thought about his coffee, not being filled.

  373. She went away crying and left. Whatever he said hurt her so

  374. much as she broke down in tears and left.

  375. Listen, Matthew 5:14 says, you are the light of the world.

    Matthew 5:14

  376. A city that is set on a hill. Cannot be hid. you know, the sad

  377. part of that story is That man ruined his opportunity to save

  378. that soul. Because he was rude.

  379. And how sad it with us when we are rude.

  380. And when we behave in an unacceptable manner, Because we

  381. think more highly. Or whatever.

  382. The reason. How sad that is when we hide our

  383. light, we hide our faith. And there is no way that young

  384. lady thought he was a Christian because he was rude.

  385. I'll move on here and it says in these verses says does not seek

  386. its own that, is that love is not selfish.

  387. Selfish person is not conduct. A seven person is only concerned

  388. about his own pleasures and his own desires and its own

  389. gratification. He doesn't care about other

  390. people. He doesn't look to other people

  391. love on the other hand, considers the wants and needs of

  392. others. That's do, we consider the wants

  393. and needs of the people around us.

  394. Do we put other people first before ourselves?

  395. Are we that type of person that doesn't really care what people

  396. think? I've heard many people, I'll be

  397. honest with you, I used to be that way.

  398. I don't really care what people think, we should care what

  399. people think we shared should care how people perceive us.

  400. We should care about us being selfish or not selfish.

  401. This generation that you and I lived on live in is the me

  402. generation. Everything about the generation

  403. that we live in right now. Everything on TV all the

  404. advertisements, all the philosophies is all about me.

  405. That's the world we live in. We're taught this from a little

  406. kid. What do we tell our children?

  407. Go get the best job. Go get the best education.

  408. Go get the best car. The best house, the best things.

  409. Me, me me you're receiving so bad that the bank's advertise

  410. credit cards for vacations. Think about that going into debt

  411. to go on a vacation. That's a me generation and it's

  412. a sad thing that happens to people.

  413. You never happened a little early on in this letter here and

  414. Corinthians the 6th chapter. We would call just a little

  415. while before this the Brethren were suing one another and it

  416. got so bad that they were going into the community and a

  417. community recognize that these brother were having all kinds of

  418. conflict. And what did Paul tell them?

  419. And some he said stop being selfish.

  420. Maybe take the wrong maybe as they say knuckle under who cares

  421. and move on. The world sees what you're

  422. doing. Sees that you're being selfish.

  423. And that's not right. That's not considerate, and

  424. that's not okay. Love, considers the actions.

  425. And the of light that love considers, the actions of itself

  426. in light of what the world thinks about it.

  427. Love does not seek its own next lie.

  428. I'm going to speed this along here nextly.

  429. The Bible says that love is not provoked.

  430. That is that love does not get angry easily.

  431. Now, here's another hard thing because I know a lot of people

  432. get angry very easily. Have you ever seen someone that

  433. is mad all the time? They just walk around angry

  434. frustrated, something with the enema, just irritating.

  435. It seems like they have a chip on their shoulder, doesn't it?

  436. I think there's something special.

  437. They are bitter. And no matter how small of

  438. wrongdoing that is done. They are frustrated by it.

  439. And see the Bible says that we are.

  440. Not like that. When wrongdoing happens to us,

  441. we don't become bitter over it. We don't become angry and

  442. frustrated over it. We have a different attitude, we

  443. have a different demeanor. Have you ever seen a 60 year old

  444. man? This is the story that reminds

  445. me of this in line at a, I don't know.

  446. Walmart or something like that. Well, I seen at one time this

  447. man at Walmart, I think he was 60 65 years old.

  448. I don't know exactly how old he is.

  449. But he was standing in line. He was yelling at this person

  450. behind the cash register because he thought they should be able

  451. to change the price of something as if they had that power.

  452. Now, here's a man that supposed to be tempered aged supposed to

  453. be mature. Have all those things that when

  454. company age, right? But he demonstrated.

  455. None of them, man. He was mad as Nels at this

  456. person. He was going off.

  457. Let me tell you something about anger.

  458. Anger is not something you inherit as my cat has 23 toes.

  459. No, no. Love is something you learn.

  460. And just as fast as you learn to be angry and learn to get

  461. frustrated, you need to unlearn it.

  462. And that is hard to do and it is not easy.

  463. But the Bible says that love is not easily provoked.

  464. I want to make one point on this, and the reason why I think

  465. it's so dangerous for us to get frustrated, be better, and to

  466. get angry at things. What is the most powerful weapon

  467. in the world? Think about it for a moment.

  468. Did you say the nuclear bomb? That's what I said.

  469. Let me tell you there's a weapon more powerful than nuclear bomb.

  470. And that's our tongue. It's the most dangerous thing.

  471. That man, man has It has moved and reshaped this world multiple

  472. times. It has killed more people than

  473. anything else and it is more dangerous than anything you

  474. could ever imagine. And when you get angry and when

  475. you're bitter, when you walk around for chip on your

  476. shoulder, guess what? You're going to build that

  477. weapon wrong and you're gonna hurt somebody in ways that you

  478. don't want to hurt someone, we need to be mindful the way that

  479. we talk the way that we act, because it has impact on this

  480. world and on one another We thank you for listening to our
