  1. Wonderful to see you tonight. I'm thankful to have everybody

  2. here so we can study the Bible together once again, and I've

  3. been really encouraged by the singing tonight.

  4. It has been very healthy for me to lift up the name of the Lord

  5. in these songs. To thank the Lord.

  6. For all he's done. We serve an awesome God, and

  7. it's just a privilege to be his child, right?

  8. There's so many times. Just little things and the fact

  9. that God commanded us to sing what a pleasure, it is to obey

  10. that command whether you like singing or not, it's not what

  11. I'm about. But the fact that we get to do

  12. it something together, we're all teaching each other.

  13. How great God is? What a blessing.

  14. It made me think about as we were singing and how we get to

  15. do this together. A scripture that I hope can help

  16. introduce this idea and why I think this is so important and

  17. that is First John chapter 4 verse let's do 19 through 21 so

    1 John 4 chapter mention

  18. if you have a few Bible it's on page 1868.

  19. And first, John chapter 4, verse 19 through 21.

    John 4:19–21

  20. And this is what that scripture says.

  21. We love him. Because he first loved us.

  22. If someone says I love God and hates his brother, he's a liar.

  23. For he who does not love his brother, whom he has seen.

  24. How can he love God when he's not sing?

  25. And this commandment we have from him that he who loves God

  26. must love his brother. Also You know, that scripture

  27. there is a kind of a catalyst for several the sermons I've

  28. presented throughout this series of studies we've had and that is

  29. asking you all to be introspective about your

  30. relationships among this congregation.

  31. And to think about one another and how you can help each other

  32. with Doctrine, right? That's what we talked about them

  33. on Wednesday, right? And how we can help each other

  34. to overcome doubt, like what we talked about last night and I

  35. think a follow up to last night about overcoming doubt is to

  36. build a culture where we feel comfortable and safe to confess.

  37. And if the church is not a place where that happens, Brothers and

  38. sisters, our members will find somewhere where they can.

  39. Whether that be for younger, Folks, at school, for those who

  40. work with their workmates neighbors family, that maybe

  41. aren't Believers. What I'm saying, is we naturally

  42. will find people that we get along with that.

  43. We feel comfortable with and we'll start to Bear our soul to

  44. them. How strange that God's people

  45. would feel uncomfortable to Bear their heart with other

  46. Christians and feel more comfortable to do it with people

  47. in the world. Now, here is the, the study

  48. outline and many of you have already had the chance to snap

  49. this QR code. If you don't know how to snap a

  50. qr-code, I'm I'm sorry. But you'll probably have to wait

  51. till after services to figure it out, but it's up there and all

  52. this will be Is the PowerPoint on your phone so you can follow

  53. along. If I go too quickly, you can

  54. have it for additional study later on every time I presented

  55. this topic, I've had people come up and say oh that was just too

  56. much too much content. So I've broken it into multiple

  57. sermons, it didn't work. I put it back into one.

  58. So I'm just going to let you study on your pace.

  59. If I go too quickly tonight we're going to briefly look at

  60. an exposition or an overview of James chapter 5 verse 13 through

    James 5:13–16

  61. 16. This is The scripture that I

  62. think is essential to understand about why we need to build a

  63. culture and our local Congregation of safe confession.

  64. Then we'll talk about the that idea of safety and ask this

  65. question, why do we need it, you know, safety that sounds like

  66. something that those snowflakes need, right?

  67. They want their safe space and they just can't handle the real

  68. world. And yet, I think what we'll find

  69. is the Bible does talk about there is value in this concept

  70. of safety. We need to figure out how to

  71. Build it internally so that we are comfortable with who we are.

  72. We feel a sense of peace with what God has given us and when

  73. we had trauma in our life, so whether you have experienced

  74. some sort of physical, emotional sexual abuse, and there is just

  75. a lack of safety because of those events.

  76. I want you to know that you can overcome for the power of God,

  77. and you can find that safety. Again, also, as a congregation

  78. we should talk about how How to build it relationally.

  79. And then finally, we'll do a case study on what safety looks

  80. like in a project and one of The Parables of Jesus Christ.

  81. So let's begin. James chapter 5 13 through 16.

    James 5 chapter mention

  82. I will present this as a section on how to not grow weary.

  83. Now the premise that we often hear about is prayer They are

  84. connected but how I'm going to present this is, this is a

  85. how-to guide of not to grow weary and lose heart.

  86. So for me, I outlining is a very helpful way to study.

  87. I'd like to show you this scripture as an outline and then

  88. read it. So, instead of reading it as a

  89. block paragraph, consider, this outline that I now have on the

  90. board. Then it says, is anyone among

  91. you suffering? Let him pray.

  92. Is anyone among you? A cheerful.

  93. Let him sing praise. Is anyone among you sick?

  94. Let him call for the Elders of the church and let them before I

  95. read it. I just want to emphasize with

  96. you as we've read. Hopefully, you have visually

  97. seen. There's three questions, right?

  98. Three questions that he then answers and this third question,

  99. takes a little bit more time to answer is anyone among you sick,

  100. let him call the Elders of the church and let them do two

  101. things. Pray for him and anointing him.

  102. Oil in the name of the Lord, and then it describes what that

  103. process does, the prayer of faith will save.

  104. The one who's sick and the Lord will raise him up.

  105. And if he's committed sins, he will be forgiven therefore based

  106. on these questions and their answers.

  107. Therefore confess your sins to one another and pray for one

  108. another that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man

  109. has great power as it is working.

  110. Let's take a few minutes to break this outline down and

  111. consider. James has questions the first

  112. section that we'll look at is how we strive personally

  113. internally how we strive to not grow weary and he asks each of

  114. us. These two questions are any of

  115. you suffering and are any of you cheerful.

  116. And I want to visualize this on a spectrum because James uses

  117. Greek words that represent the farthest of far.

  118. The are you in the lowest of lows?

  119. Or are you in the highest of highs?

  120. And this emotional experience that you're going through as you

  121. go through life? As tribulation comes as trial

  122. comes as good times, come as Joy comes, you're going to find

  123. yourself in the lowest of lows and in the highest of highs.

  124. What do we do in the lowest of lows and the highest of highs we

  125. could look back and we should pray when we're suffering and

  126. were cheerful, we should be singing praises, right?

  127. That's this is how we're to not grow weary now, I want to

  128. emphasize for just a moment because it's just in the back of

  129. my mind in our culture and especially our church culture,

  130. that a lot of times the emotional experience.

  131. Gets relegated to the bottom because it's not truth, right?

  132. And so we say things, like when it comes to interpreting the

  133. Bible, your emotions don't matter, the truth matters.

  134. And I agree with how there is objective truth that all of us

  135. are intended to follow. But I would also like to share

  136. with you that God's way includes the emotional experience and

  137. that we need to make room for the emotional experience.

  138. Because emotions are Valid Psalm 147 verse 3 talking about God,

    Psalms 147:3

  139. he heals the Brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

  140. God cares. When we are in distress, God

  141. cares. When we are on the top of the

  142. world he wants us to mourn when others are morning as the book

  143. of Romans says he wants us to rejoice when others are

  144. rejoicing. And I don't have time to go into

  145. all of this. That this is an emotional wheel.

  146. We use this in therapy a lot, especially with men, no offense

  147. men, but culturally were not really trained on how to do

  148. anything other than to be mad sad, and glad right?

  149. Kind of grunt our way through those emotions.

  150. And what I went through therapy training, I was sad mad and glad

  151. and they're asking me, but, but you've got to be able to help

  152. your clients experience deeper richer emotions.

  153. And I was going, he said me, man.

  154. So this emotional experience that people have often times put

  155. on these beautiful colored spectrums.

  156. It's important for us to see that Jesus experienced a wide

  157. range of emotions and it's healthy and appropriate that we

  158. can too. Now, I'm not interested in you

  159. manufacturing, fake emotions or fake experiences are forcing

  160. things because you feel like that's what others want you to

  161. do. I'm just trying to make space

  162. for the emotional experience. Now let's look at this.

  163. This middle section right here. We have a couple of answers to

  164. questions about how we personally strive, not to grow

  165. weary. We're going to be praying.

  166. We're going to be singing. That's not the only answers but

  167. it's ones that are good enough that James put it in the Bible.

  168. The here's the second section and that's about what to do when

  169. we're still weary. So let's say, for a time, you've

  170. been in the lowest of lows and so you've been praying and

  171. you've been praying You've been praying and it's just not

  172. working. You're just so low that you

  173. can't get out of it. Well, thankfully, this section

  174. is put here to help us appreciate that.

  175. You're supposed to interact with others.

  176. You interact with others. So he says, is any of you sick,

  177. let him call on the Elders of the church and let them do two

  178. things, pray over him anointing with oil in the name of the

  179. Lord. Now it's not the intention of

  180. this sermon to go deep down into the weeds of what it means to be

  181. anointed in the name of the Lord, I will have a slide to

  182. show you the weeds, but I'm going to ask you to look on that

  183. on your phone or on your smart device later on on your own in

  184. great detail. Here's the the point that I'll

  185. be making the words sick in this area of scripture.

  186. Contextually are talking about being weary and a better

  187. translation would be is anyone among you weary let him call for

  188. the Elders of the church and let them pray over him.

  189. Anointing him with oil, in the name of the Lord, and the prayer

  190. of faith will save. The one who's weary the Lord

  191. will raise him up and if he's committed sins, he will be

  192. forgiven. And why this makes more sense

  193. with weary is because sickness is not directly tied to sin as

  194. far as did you get cancer? Well, that's because you lied 12

  195. years ago and the Lord remembered it and he threw that

  196. cancer into you because that's the price you get to pay.

  197. That's not the kind of God we serve if however, as I'm

  198. presenting it is weariness, there is weariness.

  199. That's associated with an emotional experience, but

  200. there's also weariness associated with Sim and there

  201. are times when I may be sad, glad or mad, just because life

  202. has me down. And they're signed, there's

  203. times when I'm mad or I'm sad because I brought this on

  204. myself, sin has consequences, you get a DUI, there's

  205. consequences to getting a DUI. Right, that we understand that

  206. legally, we should understand it, spiritually as well.

  207. Now here is the briefest of brief talking about the views.

  208. There are people who think that we literally should anoint with

  209. oil and their explanation is this.

  210. Here are my objections to that claim.

  211. But thirdly, what, I'll ask you to consider on your own as

  212. spiritually. It's talking about weariness.

  213. Here's the reasons why. And here's what someone might

  214. have an objection about Now briefly.

  215. We have things we can do on our own, we have things that others

  216. can do for us. So here's the conclusion

  217. therefore you are asked to confess your sins to one another

  218. that's one form of weariness and you pray for one another, that's

  219. another form of weariness to overcome that.

  220. You may be healed, the prayer of a righteous person has great

  221. power as it is working. So what I want you to do is to

  222. remember that there are two types Soooo of weariness, we've

  223. got one type that is sin based and we've got another type.

  224. That is simply emotional based and we do not grow weary

  225. according to James 5, when we talk about it, Right.

  226. So there's going to be times when you talk about your sin

  227. problems and you're confessing to someone that you trust.

  228. I need help. Maybe I have an addiction issue.

  229. Maybe I have a behavioral issue. Maybe I have an anger issue,

  230. whatever it is, we're confessing sin.

  231. There's other times, when instead of at the back door,

  232. when you see each other at Services, you know, I don't know

  233. what the number one question that a Christian as a Christian.

  234. How you doing? And it's not a question.

  235. It's really a statement and you know it's saying hello.

  236. And if one were to say how you doing?

  237. And the other says, well I'll tell you man, it's been a hard

  238. hard week and I am just, I can't sometimes we're going.

  239. I just ask you how you're doing. I want to know that I'm not

  240. interested, right? The English language is bizarre

  241. sometimes. And what I would challenge us

  242. with is that when we're asking how you doing, you really should

  243. ask, how are you doing? So that someone feels safe

  244. enough to say it's been Been a hard week and I've been down

  245. here and I can't figure out how to get out of it.

  246. Okay. So when those people get to that

  247. last little row and they're down there at the doldrums then how

  248. do we help them get out of that we re experience.

  249. So that's the first part of our study.

  250. Hopefully now we feel better about James 5 and we know that

  251. there's some valuable teaching there that says that we're

  252. supposed to confess our sins to one another, we're going to pray

  253. for one another. The prayers of a righteous

  254. person availeth much, but let's talk about safety and why that

  255. word is very important in this conversation.

  256. Did you know that the word safety or safe in the Bible that

  257. we see in English? Actually comes from several

  258. Greek and Hebrew words in the Old and New Testament and they

  259. paint a beautiful picture of what it means to be safe.

  260. Now, we use that word sometimes casually, right?

  261. Like Somebody's running to first base and they're safe, they made

  262. it right as we with our kids, when we play hide-and-seek and

  263. they are running to get to the couch before dad's chasing them

  264. down, they're diving through the air in there, safe, right in the

  265. Bible, you can look these up and Hebrew and in Greek many times,

  266. they'll translate into English as safe.

  267. But other synonyms are that that we're secure, right?

  268. That we're at peace. That we've escaped from some

  269. great problem that there was Deliverance and someone has

  270. broke free, that there's Refuge, we've run into the Lord, he's a

  271. strong tower. As the Bible says in Proverbs

    Proverbs 18:10

  272. 18:10, the righteous run into him and they are safe.

  273. In Luke 15. 27 is we're going to talk about later the scriptures

  274. will call and safe and sound whenever they come home.

  275. And that safe and sound is talking about about a wellness.

  276. And I love how it's used in first John or rather, second

    2 John 1 chapter mention

  277. John chapter 1, where it talks about, how we are to be of sound

  278. mind. So mental health, emotional

  279. well-being. These things are biblically

  280. based, we are to be of sound mind safe in the mind.

  281. Safe, that we've been rescued safe, like an anchor.

  282. That is sure in the middle of a storm.

  283. The boat can drop its anchor, and it's safe, even though the

  284. winds are crashing all over it. It so it's easy, maybe to listen

  285. to the news and listen, sometimes I can be guilty of it

  286. as well and we hear people use a word say well, this is my safe

  287. space so we just go poof. What a Nancy for thinking that

  288. they need to be safe. We don't need to be safe.

  289. We do, we really do. We need to feel comfortable

  290. enough to talk to someone that we feel safe with who in the

  291. Bible would be a good example of someone who felt safe Apostle

  292. Paul. And I'm going to show you a

  293. scripture here where he talks about himself and I'm going to

  294. ask this question at the bottom. How was Paul able to confess

  295. this? Now I've emphasized some words.

  296. Hopefully, we can read it. It says As and I thank Christ

  297. Jesus. Our lord who has enabled me

  298. because he counted me faithful putting me into the ministry.

  299. Although I was formerly a blasphemer.

  300. A persecutor and insolent man. But I obtained Mercy because I

  301. did it, ignorantly in unbelief and the grace of our Lord was

  302. exceedingly abundant with faith and love which are in Christ

  303. Jesus. This is a faithful saying and

  304. worthy of all acceptance that Christ Jesus came into the sent

  305. into the world, to save Sinners of whom.

  306. I am chief. How is he able to talk so freely

  307. about that. And here's a guy that is a

  308. blasphemer, a persecutor an insolent, man.

  309. Some might call him a murderer, putting Christians, in jail.

  310. And and if they were then executed later that he could

  311. have all sorts of things and yet, here he is just kind of

  312. broadcasting it freely. By the way, this is what I was,

  313. and I'm the chief of Sinners. I'm the worst of Sinners and I

  314. would suggest that Paul was safe.

  315. Take all those words that we used and biblically the way that

  316. they are used, we could say he was safe and his relationship

  317. with his Lord. Meaning he felt comfortable to

  318. bring this to the master, but he also felt comfortable and

  319. talking about it with his Brethren.

  320. Notice what he says? Jesus enabled me.

  321. Jesus counted me. Faithful, Jesus.

  322. Put me into a Ministry. And therefore I obtained mercy

  323. and Jesus, Grace was exceedingly, abundant and Jesus

  324. saves Sinners. I'm the chief And so, I obtained

  325. Mercy. He felt comfortable in this and

  326. he wants us to feel comfortable in it too.

  327. Because he says, however, for this reason, I obtained Mercy

  328. that in me first, Jesus Christ might show all long suffering as

  329. a pattern to those who are going to believe on him for

  330. everlasting life. Paul is intended to be a pattern

  331. where you and me. Should be like him.

  332. And we can talk about what we used to be.

  333. We can talk about what we are presently struggling with.

  334. Now we're not going to, you know, celebrate the sin.

  335. That's not what it's about. But it is about talking about

  336. how we used to be one way and then the Lord has done some

  337. wonderful work in our life and now we're different or the Lord

  338. is trying to work through us. But man were just having a

  339. really hard time and we need help to get through it.

  340. Now at this point in the sermon, as we go on to the next Point,

  341. I've had several people naturally fall into one of two

  342. groups, you're either really ready to help.

  343. You're like let sit on the safe person and I'm ready to go.

  344. Find those people that don't feel safe.

  345. I'm going to make them or you're the person is about ready to get

  346. out of here and say, this is way beyond my comfort zone.

  347. Nobody here knows what I've done.

  348. Nobody knows what my life is like and I do Don't know if I

  349. want to talk about it and so the best illustration I've ever

  350. found is this. Eva.

  351. It's ostrich, chasing a zebra giraffe, screaming.

  352. Let me help you. And so happens in the church.

  353. We get so zealous to want to help others.

  354. Sometimes we forget that, maybe they're not where we are in this

  355. emotional process. I remember one time I had a dear

  356. friend that I gave a sermon very similar to this and I encourage

  357. the church to, you know, get to know each.

  358. Each other and get to know each other about the parts of their

  359. life that maybe they're not ready to share.

  360. And he said, he had come someone come up to him after that,

  361. sermon who had never spent time with him other than a, hey, how

  362. are you? And the very first question that

  363. they asked was tell me about your sister who has it been

  364. faithful for the past 10 years and he was just not ready to

  365. have that conversation. It wasn't he wasn't safe.

  366. Now that other person felt very safe.

  367. I am. This person was probably

  368. thinking I'm totally safe and I'm a safe person and so I'll be

  369. able to ask him this question. So this is why I'm going to have

  370. a few of these thoughts just to remind you.

  371. It's okay if you're not quite there yet or maybe if you're

  372. overzealous, that's okay too. Now I want you two to know at

  373. this moment in the sermon. It's okay.

  374. If you don't feel safe and it's okay to not understand others in

  375. the moment. So maybe you're just totally

  376. their butts. What else in the congregation

  377. isn't it's okay to not want to open up to everyone.

  378. Right. It's okay.

  379. If someone doesn't want to open up to you, that's important.

  380. Especially if you're a helper type of person and you're

  381. insulted or offended. If somebody doesn't want to talk

  382. to you about their problem, this is kind of a tricky sentence.

  383. It's okay, if you're not someone elses safe person.

  384. Even though you feel safe with them.

  385. So, I've seen this happen among friends where one friend thinks

  386. the other is their best friend, and they're just going to pour

  387. out their heart to them, whereas the other person wasn't ready

  388. for that. It's okay to want this safety

  389. that you see in others, and it's okay, if it takes more time than

  390. you expected. So, let's just take a breath.

  391. As we jump into this third part of the study, and that is

  392. talking about what's going on in your heart, how to build

  393. internal safety. Now, this is from a training

  394. seminar that I went to and I know this is very small but it

  395. says, how can I Come more secure a grounded theory of earning

  396. secure attachment Biola. Why?

  397. I don't even know how to say that, oh, aloof for w a and Fife

  398. schleiden and winning. And so this was at the Texans

  399. annual marriage, and family therapy conference.

  400. And as they were giving this presentation about research,

  401. they've done on how to build safety within a person I thought

  402. You stole that from the Bible? I know you stole from me.

  403. You're going to say that that's this therapy thing but I know

  404. you did. So I took the pleasure of

  405. capturing it back for the Bible even though they might not claim

  406. it comes from there. So we're going to look at an

  407. illustration in the form of a house.

  408. I have had some experience with home renovation but please do

  409. not base this house and the way it's constructed off of sound

  410. practices that we have in the real world but we're going to

  411. start with this concept. What happens when you're here

  412. and sin and weariness is beating down on you and you've got to

  413. build this internal safety so that you can talk to someone.

  414. You know, maybe you're afraid to talk to somebody in this place

  415. because you're afraid they won't know what I've been through.

  416. They will judge me. They will look down on me.

  417. Now, I can say all day long. No, they won't.

  418. But until you feel safe, it's going to be hard for you to

  419. overcome that. So, here is a research backed

  420. method. You build internal safety that I

  421. think is biblically based and here's the roof and notice, I

  422. started with the roof. You never start with the roof

  423. when you build a house. However, there are internal

  424. changes and there are relational changes that will shelter you

  425. from the storm. So the question is, how do we

  426. build these internal changes? And how do we build relational

  427. changes? So, now, we'll start down at the

  428. bottom with the foundation and this is the foundation to build

  429. safety coming from Romans chapter 12.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  430. L've verse 1 and 2 which says we are to be transformed by the

  431. renewing of our minds. So that's a command.

  432. Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

  433. And the same way that communion is a command that our worship,

  434. the items in it are commanded. Transformation is a command

  435. mental renewal. Well, how do we do that?

  436. How do we transform our minds? I'm going to show you four

  437. research-based ways that people have come to feel safe.

  438. Number one, people state by being intentional today.

  439. I'm going to do x y z to try to build a little safety.

  440. And I like, what Colossians 3:1 says, set your mind on things

    Colossians 3:1

  441. above. Not on things of this world, so

  442. am I? Set is healthy and necessary to

  443. build safety and overcome trauma in your heart.

  444. Number to overcome setbacks, meaning you will take a risk and

  445. somebody might let you down, Bible says in John, 16:33 in

  446. this world, you will have troubles, but be of good cheer.

  447. I have overcome the world and friends.

  448. If you have a mindset where you're going to say, I'm going

  449. to take a risk but kind of like I said, last night this Person

  450. that I'm going to take a risk with this.

  451. Isn't my Lord and Savior. Jesus Christ is, and this person

  452. may let me down. So I got to remember that they

  453. might let me down, Jesus doesn't let me down, but this person

  454. might having that in your heart is helpful.

  455. Number three, having surrogate attachment.

  456. So we might call this an adopted or chosen family and the Bible's

  457. full of surrogate attachments. You could write down if you're

  458. taking notes in Ruth 1:15. This Young foreign woman, her

    Ruth 1:15

  459. husband dies. The family is pretty much wiped

  460. out, except for her mother-in-law, right?

  461. But her husband's gone. So she could just go back to her

  462. people. But she tells this woman that

  463. she's not really related to anymore, but she decides she's

  464. going to go with her. She says your people.

  465. They're going to be my people, your God is going to be my God.

  466. And so this young woman Ruth has a surrogate attachment to Naomi

  467. in Romans, chapter 16. Verse 15.

    Romans 16 chapter mention

  468. The Apostle Paul says greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord and

  469. greet, his mother and mine and it's one little thought and I

  470. wish I could expand it so much more than this.

  471. But Paul look to this woman like a mother.

  472. So, my question for you all is, do you have people in the church

  473. whom you look to and they're like a brother to you, like a

  474. sister to you, like a mom, like a dad, a spiritual family, like

  475. this is what we're supposed to be.

  476. Galatians chapter 3 talks about how when we are baptized into

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  477. Christ. What we all put on him through

  478. baptism, and there's no longer Jew nor Greek slave nor free nor

  479. male or female but we're all one in Christ.

  480. We are a surrogate family and that's research base.

  481. So this is why I'm saying, I think they stole it from the

  482. Bible number for therapy and education.

  483. Proverbs chapter 20 verse 5 says that a the heart of a man is

    Proverbs 20:5

  484. like a deep. Well, But a man of understanding

  485. can draw it out and so I do think it is healthy and helpful

  486. to reach out to others who have training to help you overcome

  487. traumatic experiences. So now that we've got the

  488. foundation, let's build the walls of internal changes and

  489. relational changes so we can look at this research based

  490. method of an internal change and that is to relinquish the victim

  491. mentality. Now I don't say that in like an

  492. insulting way like oh you're Just a victim and get over it

  493. because sometimes you've been through the ringer but the Bible

  494. suggests and research suggests that if we put on the mindset,

  495. this, I'm more than this. I'm not going to have a name tag

  496. for about the rest of my life. That says, this is how I'm

  497. identified as by this trauma, I will put that down and put on

  498. something else that you were able to overcome that trauma

  499. quicker. Philippians 4:13 says, I can do

    Philippians 4:13

  500. all things through Christ. Who strengthens me a second,

  501. step is to redefine, one's identity and work.

  502. So by taking off a victim mentality and putting on, in

  503. this context, putting on Christ Putting on his identity, I love

  504. what John 8:36 says. So who the sun sets free is free

    John 8:36

  505. indeed, and one of my favorite songs, I don't know if it's in

  506. this folder or not, but it's, that's the how the chorus goes,

  507. who the sun sets free is free, indeed.

  508. And then we all sing together. I'm a Child of God.

  509. Yes, I am. I love that phrase.

  510. I love saying it, with my brothers and sisters, what we're

  511. all calling out together. This new identity.

  512. This new worth, where it doesn't matter, what I used to be, and

  513. what I used to do. I'm not I'm not measured by that

  514. anymore, I measured by Jesus and he says, I'm a child of God and

  515. so what else can I declare bait? Yes, I am.

  516. So this is how we construct internal changes towards safety.

  517. It takes time. And while we're doing that,

  518. research also suggests that you must make relational changes.

  519. You can't be an Island by yourself.

  520. And so we are to do our best to make peace with the past, what

  521. some call the family of origin. And so, if there's abuse in the

  522. family that you grew up with, if there's poor relationships with

  523. friends in your past part of your life, then we are to try

  524. our best to make peace with it. And I want to read Romans 12

    Romans 12:17

  525. verse 17. It says if it is possible as far

  526. as it depends on you live at peace with everyone, it's

  527. important. Remember this you might want

  528. Want to make peace with someone else but they might not want to

  529. make peace with you and it's not your job to make them make peace

  530. with you. Remember, if you're the ostrich

  531. you let me help you, right? We can't force someone into a

  532. relationship but I love how the scripture says as much as it's

  533. possible with you. Meaning you have a job to do and

  534. that's to try To do your best to make peace.

  535. And finally, we take small risks of trust and as James 5:16 says,

    James 5:16

  536. which is a command confess your sins, to one another.

  537. This is when you take a risk with somebody at church and you

  538. find someone whom you may be are close to or you feel like

  539. they're a safe person and you're able to say, hey, can we get a

  540. cup of coffee? So, I want to talk about and

  541. that cup of coffee at whatever place here in town or if you

  542. don't like coffee get Whatever, I don't care.

  543. The point is, you're going to spend some time and it's going

  544. to take time. This isn't something you talk

  545. about 30 seconds and you say, great talk and walk away.

  546. You might need to take an hour or two or three and that's

  547. small. Risk built on making peace with

  548. your past leads to relational changes.

  549. And these are research-based methods that we can grow

  550. stronger inside. One of my favorite verses that

  551. I'm going to close with on this section is First John chapter 3,

    1 John 3:19

  552. verse 19 and 20, and it says by this We know that we are of the

  553. truth and shall assure our hearts before him.

  554. For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart

  555. and he knows all things. As I have learned when it comes

  556. to people who've been through trauma or of had past

  557. experiences, a lot of guilt there.

  558. The whole lot of self-doubt and inability to let go of that

  559. past. And one of the things about this

  560. scripture is to remind these people as they're building this

  561. house. God.

  562. Greater than your heart. And so, when you're having

  563. trouble building it remember, God is greater, he knows all

  564. things and he is able to help you overcome.

  565. Now, there's a book called safe. People wouldn't, you know it and

  566. these psychologists list the characteristics of someone who

  567. is safe and someone who's not safe.

  568. And I'm just going to we're going to plow through it in 30

  569. seconds, okay? They believe a safe person is

  570. somebody who's honest and gentle and Wrecked humble and

  571. self-aware able to listen and receive the truth.

  572. They act on the needs and they don't just hear they grow and

  573. work towards personal Improvement and then unsafe

  574. people are dishonest and defensive they withdraw or

  575. Stonewall they manipulate they flatter.

  576. But they do not confront with truth, they may apologize.

  577. They don't change their behavior and they lack personal insight

  578. and awareness. But you know, what's better than

  579. a book is the Bible Bible the Bible, I think summarizes it

  580. this way love suffers long and is kind love does not.

  581. Envy does not parade itself. It is not puffed up.

  582. Does not behave rudely, this not seek its own is not provoked

  583. thinks. No evil does not rejoice in

  584. iniquity, love rejoices in the truth Bears.

  585. All things believes all things, hopes, all things endures, all

  586. things, love, never fails. Al's.

  587. So as we're building safety, here, we are at this last slide

  588. as we're building safety. We got to remember that a safe

  589. person is able to take on a lot of these character traits, and

  590. then be aware. That sometimes there's some

  591. false character traits that we try to put on.

  592. For example, this one flattery but does not confront with

  593. truth. We think we're safe.

  594. When we just kind of let someone do whatever, that's not a safe

  595. person. Safe person is going to

  596. challenge somebody to Truth. Okay, here we are very quickly

  597. how to build congregational safety.

  598. So, now, let's start talking about this group of people here.

  599. How do you work together towards making this a safe space?

  600. It's important to remember that a church is made up of various

  601. types of relationships and a question that you might be

  602. asking. And if not, I want you to ask

  603. it, with me is, am I supposed to be this to have this deeply

  604. personal and vulnerable relationship with everyone?

  605. Here. Well, I think that's an ideal

  606. that we want to strive for, but I want you to just take a deep

  607. breath and think to yourself, I don't have to be that close with

  608. every single member, why not? You might be a little bit upset,

  609. why not? I thought I was supposed to be

  610. close with everyone. Well, I'm going to use Jesus as

  611. the example, okay? And I want you to consider that

  612. Jesus had various types of interactions and relationships

  613. with his followers. Jesus had a multitude.

  614. That would be like his public interactions.

  615. Jesus had the 12, which is an Outer Circle.

  616. That's what I'm going to call an Outer Circle of Friends of

  617. safety. Then he had the three Peter

  618. James, and John and these three. They got to spend time with him

  619. in ways that no one else did. They got to see special Miracles

  620. that no one else saw. And even when they went to pray,

  621. he went a little farther with Peter James and John before he

  622. went off to Pray by himself. But you know, Jesus also had a

  623. long time. And I Define that as a healthy

  624. personal form of safety, where we have a boundary to say, you

  625. know what, I need to kind of recharge right now before we

  626. have this conversation, my question is in which of these

  627. was Jesus, not his authentic self.

  628. And I would say, Jesus was authentic and every single

  629. scenario. He may have acted differently

  630. with the multitude than he did with his and her 3, and the same

  631. way that we might interact with each other differently at a

  632. church lunch, or after services. And there's a lot of people, a

  633. lot of conversations, kind of loud, and maybe it's a little

  634. overwhelming, that's probably not the best time to be

  635. vulnerable. And so it's okay to not have

  636. that deep connection with everyone.

  637. But here's my question. Who's your three?

  638. Do you have a theory? And I do think it's a flexible

  639. number. You could have one or two or

  640. three or four. Like you don't have to have

  641. three. God got to.

  642. I'm one short. No no I want you to think about

  643. who are the three that you consider in that group.

  644. It might be your husband or your wife. might be a brother or

  645. sister might be a best friend, it might be a neighbor there

  646. naturally our relationships here that have that already but there

  647. also may be people who don't have those relationships, who

  648. were there three and how can we help them grow research,

  649. suggests that healthy relationships are built through

  650. connection as this study shows at the bottom and a lot of times

  651. I understand the research you hear that title and you go duh

  652. everyone knows that and that's how research works a lot of

  653. times as they They research the things that maybe the rest of us

  654. had already figured out, but social scientists really got to

  655. look at the details. A lot of times healthy

  656. relationships are built through connection and I want to read

  657. this scripture and then explain this pyramid of connection that

  658. Caudill and Drake and and some counseling services put together

  659. in 2020. First, John 1:7 says, but if we

    John 1:7

  660. walk in the light as he is the light we have Fellowship.

  661. With one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ, his son

  662. cleanses us from all sins. If we say, we have no sin, we

  663. deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

  664. If we confess our sins, he's faithful and just to forgive our

  665. sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

  666. So this scripture is emphasis on fellowship and fellowship takes

  667. three things. It takes you, it takes another

  668. believer. And as we'll see in a little

  669. bit, I'll have the word god up here.

  670. It takes three for Fellowship to work properly.

  671. Early, but it's important to remember that manufactured

  672. connection where you're trying to force something.

  673. It's lonely, and it's discouraging.

  674. Let me give you an example. Research shows that, if you want

  675. to have an intimate relationship, and I'm not

  676. talking about sex which we usually use with the synonym of

  677. intimacy. But what the way I'm presenting

  678. it tonight is just a deeply personal and very close

  679. connection that can be platonic as friends.

  680. It Between Marriage Partners as well, but we're really

  681. interested. We want to be vulnerable.

  682. We want to have this intimate relationship but you can't just

  683. jump into those. It's not possible.

  684. Now, it can happen very quickly, but we start with truth and that

  685. means that two people have to have something in common, a

  686. shared sense of meaning. And with that shared sense of

  687. meaning, then they move up that relationship pyramid into safety

  688. that they feel comfortable to talk to one another Other about

  689. that shared sense of Truth and as they feel comfortable talking

  690. about it suddenly now they trust each other that they can move

  691. Beyond. Maybe that one thing that

  692. brought them together, maybe it was, you know a work friend and

  693. all the things you talk about is work but then you feel safe to

  694. talking about work. So then you can bring up some

  695. other issue that's on your mind and that's how we get to

  696. vulnerability and intimacy. But when you try to manufacture

  697. it and this person is desperate to have a vulnerable intimate

  698. connection with Our friend right or with your marriage partner

  699. and a lot of times, this is what happens.

  700. And marriage want persons reading a book, the other person

  701. watching TV or something, right? They're not interested in this

  702. book. And this book has got some great

  703. stuff. I mean, it's going to save our

  704. marriage and it's going to take us to the next level.

  705. And so we start trying to implement the things of this

  706. book and our partner wasn't really there for any of that.

  707. And so what happens and this isn't a marriage.

  708. This is just a friendship example up here but this person

  709. is ready to move into safety, but the other is not This person

  710. is ready to move into trust and the others not and as this

  711. person starts to divulge things and they're moving into this

  712. place where I lie trust you and I'm talking about this stuff.

  713. Why aren't you talking back? Why aren't you opening up to me?

  714. Because it's manufactured. And it will only end up in

  715. loneliness and discouragement and very quickly that friendship

  716. is become superficial all over again.

  717. So what are we supposed to do well with God at the top.

  718. And this is why the I have this scripture here when we have

  719. fellowship with one another I think fellowship and

  720. relationship or two very close words.

  721. But with that inner three or the person that you're trying to get

  722. closer with, you want to be vulnerable with you start with

  723. the sense of Truth together and you move into safety together

  724. and you start trusting each other.

  725. And then we're Are able to open up about a problem.

  726. And someone divulge is, man, I've had a porn addiction for

  727. the past 20 years and I don't know how to stop.

  728. Or. I lost my job last week and I'm

  729. going to lose everything, but I haven't been able to talk to my

  730. wife about it. I'm just pretending to go to

  731. work, right? So we get, how do we get to

  732. these points? Because we build these other

  733. things in common and then we get to intimacy the closest thing.

  734. And what I'm suggesting to you is the way that we get there is

  735. that we're both pursuing God. And by pursuing God with someone

  736. in the congregation, trying to get closer together and trying

  737. to create that sense of safety. This is how it is accomplished.

  738. We can talk more about that afterwards.

  739. In conclusion, I simply want to share with you, the prodigal,

  740. The Prodigal father and brother and how they are an excellent

  741. example of someone who's safe and someone who's not safe and

  742. so I'm going to share some visual aids with you up here on

  743. the board and we will briefly review the parable.

  744. And that is that there was this prodigal or this son who told

  745. his father that he wanted to go off into a far country.

  746. And so, his father gave him his portion of the inheritance.

  747. And he went off and squandered his life and his living in that

  748. place. And after a series of very

  749. embarrassing and Unfortunate Events, he decides to come home

  750. and when he comes home to his father, he tells Him, I've

  751. sinned against heaven and against you and I'm no longer

  752. worthy to be called your son. And what I want to emphasize

  753. here is that the father was safe in two ways in this relationship

  754. first. He was safe and that he didn't

  755. go with the son to the far country.

  756. That's important to remember. And I think sometimes it's easy

  757. for us to excuse sin and to make allowances for our friends and

  758. our family. When they're trapped in sin with

  759. the father, didn't do that. The father there is an Open Door

  760. and he waited for the sun to return, but he wouldn't go with

  761. him. That's a safe person.

  762. But when the sun came back, that safety is made manifest and how

  763. the father responds, he runs to meet and he picks him up.

  764. And he hugs him, he kisses him. He calls for a robe to be put on

  765. him a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet.

  766. And even though the sun is completely broken, the father

  767. calls out my son, My son was lost and is found.

  768. He's alive again. Now, as the parable continues,

  769. the older brother who had didn't leave and had not wasted money

  770. in. Prodigal living finds out that

  771. the younger son has returned and not only has he returned, but

  772. the father is now celebrating him and he is frustrated and

  773. angry with what has happened here and so he won't even go

  774. into the party. The father has to walk out and

  775. talk to him. And in angry he says, for the

  776. first time in the Herbal the, your son wasted, his money on

  777. prostitutes. It never said that up till that

  778. point, it did say, prodigal living.

  779. And it's likely that he had wasted the money on prostitutes.

  780. This is the first time The older brother is not safe.

  781. Because he's interested in Justice and revenge and Judgment

  782. at all costs. Instead of what the father who

  783. had a boundary that he wouldn't cross, but when that sun came

  784. back repentant he was ready to forgive.

  785. Now the moral of this story is that just like the older brother

  786. and the younger brother both in a way were lost and needed to

  787. repent and come back to the their father.

  788. So, were the Jewish people that Jesus was working with, and the

  789. Pharisees who judged and looked down on those who were tax

  790. collectors and sinners. Has Jesus is trying to call both

  791. sides to repentance and what I'm trying to advocate for with

  792. safety. Is that if you want to be safe

  793. for others than we do have a moral boundary that we don't

  794. cross. But when others are willing to

  795. come back and open up and and to be vulnerable with us, that

  796. we're not going to demand a pound of Flesh.

  797. We'll help them find the Lord, that's our Bible study tonight.

  798. And I know that's a lot of. A lot of information that we've

  799. gone through, we've covered for big concepts of how to not grow

  800. weary, according to James 5, how being safe is a biblically

  801. appropriate concept, how to build internal safety so that we

  802. feel comfortable to reach out. And then how congregationally or

  803. relationally, we understand that this is a journey.

  804. We're going to go through together.

  805. Sir with someone we're not going to expect them to be vulnerable.

  806. We get to just be stonewalling towards them.

  807. I hope some of this was helpful information for you and I'd like

  808. to show you this animation and read the scripture as we offer

  809. the gospel invitation. I love.

  810. It's one of my favorite images on baptism and it says in Romans

    Romans 6:3

  811. 6:3, and for do you not know that as many of us as were

  812. baptized into Christ were baptized into his death?

  813. Therefore We were buried with him, through baptism into death

  814. that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of

  815. the father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

  816. And I think, what we've talked about tonight is a part of this

  817. gospel process. We have to walk in newness of

  818. Life who we are. After baptism is just as

  819. important as getting baptized. Right?

  820. And so friends, if anyone here has it been baptized there were

  821. about to have a gospel invitation and I want to

  822. challenge you to think about according to the scriptures how

  823. Faith leads us to hear the word. And to believe the message to

  824. repent of our sins and confess that Jesus Christ is the Son of

  825. God and be baptized, and that baptism puts us in Christ and

  826. without baptism, we're not in Christ.

  827. But part of that ism is who we are afterwards and Who We Are.

  828. It's should be people who are safe and a congregation is safe

  829. and if you've had struggles without than this gospel,

  830. invitation is also for you where you can come forward and start a

  831. new page in a new life living for the master, there's want to
