  1. We have quite a few of our numbers that are missing today

  2. due to illness or traveling. But we are grateful for your

  3. presence and I hope and pray that what we have to consider

  4. this morning for a little while would be encouraging and

  5. edifying to you. Now, just a reason for the

  6. lesson. I don't know how long ago it

  7. was, but I preached on Matthew chapter, 23 was the last sermon

  8. our Lord ever preached. And it was really amazing.

  9. This sermon. In fact, it was the Lord

  10. scathing rebuke upon scribes and Pharisees who pretended to be

  11. one thing on the outside. But inside that's not who they

  12. were. In fact, Jesus actually calls

  13. them Hypocrites, Hypocrites for real, they pretended to be

  14. something they never really intended to be.

  15. And so I preached a sermon entitled neglecting the

  16. weightier matters of the law and the weightier matters that Jesus

  17. calls. He calls them, Justice, mercy

  18. and Faith. So the reason for the lesson, a

  19. very, very dear friend of mine asked by way of a request.

  20. Would I preach on the subject of what actually is, Justice,

  21. mercy, and faith. And what are those things look

  22. like in our life? Was it something brand-new that

  23. Jesus came? With in Matthew chapter 23 or

    Matthew 23 chapter mention

  24. has it always existed, did it go back all the way back to the

  25. very beginning under the law of Moses?

  26. What was Jesus say? Why did he say it in the context

  27. that he gave it? And how does it apply to you?

  28. And I today and I'm going to ask you to do something for me.

  29. Please, you may have in your mind, a basic definition of

  30. justice, a basic definition of mercy, and a basic definition of

  31. faith and I'm going to ask you this.

  32. Please cast that aside. And don't draw any conclusions

  33. or make any definitions until. We look at these words from the

  34. Bible, we're going to actually be reflecting back on the Book

  35. of Micah and we're going to notice in the Hebrew what those

  36. words actually meant. And how does it apply today?

  37. And I think you may have a little bit of a different

  38. perspective on what Justice mercy, and Faith, really is.

  39. Now, the only way that we're going to be able to understand

  40. the context of Justice, mercy and faith is to understand the

  41. context of what Jesus said prior to that.

  42. So I'm not going to get bogged down in the particulars of these

  43. passages. I've already taught on these

  44. passages before I will narrate through them.

  45. So we have an understanding and we lay a foundation, and then we

  46. can move forward together and my hope and prayer is when we leave

  47. here today, we can understand what Justice mercy and faith is

  48. how we Applied in our life and how we can be better in the

  49. future than we've ever been, in days gone by.

  50. That's my hope. That's my prayer.

  51. Let's begin. Matthew 23.

  52. Jesus says, woe to you scribes and Pharisees.

  53. And then he says the words, the word Hypocrites.

  54. I want to just slide this in. I've been here for a lot of

  55. years and you've heard me say this many times, I'm going to

  56. say it again. You already know what's coming.

  57. I think the word hypocrite is the most overused and abused

  58. word. In the English language, that

  59. people use as an indictment on someone who professes to be a

  60. Christian, but makes a mistake. That is not a hypocrite.

  61. We are not perfect. We all make mistakes, we all

  62. sinned. We all fall short of the glory

  63. of God. All of, that's true a person

  64. that's trying to do. What's right?

  65. And makes a mistake as not a hypocrite.

  66. I'm going to slide this into, this was free.

  67. You know what I found in my life, maybe you've seen the same

  68. thing, but often times people use the word Hypocrites, and

  69. they use it against somebody else, to justify their own

  70. inactivity and lack of service to God, for example, I don't go

  71. to church because there's Hypocrites over there.

  72. I don't want to be like the Hypocrites.

  73. I'll just live my life like I do because I don't want to be like

  74. those churchgoers they're Hypocrites.

  75. In other words, it's used as a wuwei or a tool to justify their

  76. own inactivity. All right.

  77. All that being said, Jesus is going to talk about people that

  78. are truly our Hypocrites. They were scribes and they were

  79. Pharisees and this is why. I notice what Jesus says, you

  80. give tithe of mint and anise, and cumin.

  81. Now, what is MIT Anderson cumin? I'll just say it this way.

  82. They were kitchen spices, and, you know what they did, they

  83. actually grew up in the kitchen and clay pots, mint, and anise,

  84. and cumin. Let me talk about tithing for

  85. just a moment, okay, tithing was a requirement given by God in

  86. the Old Testament and the word tide means 10th, by the way.

  87. That's where we get the term. 10% or people talk about 10%

  88. talk about tithing. It's because the word tithe

  89. means tenth. What did God required God

  90. required that the, that the people of the children of Israel

  91. would give a tenth of all that the land produced?

  92. Now. Did god require them to include

  93. the kitchen spices in the tithing of a tenth of?

  94. What the land produced that's irrelevant.

  95. That's not the point. Jesus was not saying they were

  96. wrong in making the tithe extend to the kitchen spices.

  97. It is never wrong to give to God, What he was saying is you

  98. people are great in doing the things that everybody can see,

  99. and Pat you on the back for, you've even taken the tithes

  100. requirement and even to the nth degree and even made it to the

  101. kitchen spices. And you can just imagine he's

  102. saying this by the way, the Lord saying you're great at taking

  103. them. It anise and cumin and going,

  104. OK? 9 for me, one for God, nine for

  105. me, one for God, 94, me one, forgot.

  106. He said you're great at that butt.

  107. In doing that, you've also neglected, the weightier matters

  108. of the law. I got to say some but wait here.

  109. You know, the word weightier was a rabbinical term.

  110. What do I mean by that? God gave specific commands in

  111. the Old Testament. He gave specific requirements in

  112. the Old Testament rabbinic tradition decided, what

  113. requirements were weightier and what we're not so waiting.

  114. Let me give you two examples really quickly.

  115. One of those weightier Matters by rabbinic, tradition was

  116. circumcision. And by the way, that's why when

  117. the church was established, even though Jesus Took the old Lon,

  118. And nailed it to his cross. According to the book of

  119. Colossians when the church was established Jewish people by

  120. Blood who formerly had ancestors that lived under the law of

  121. Moses considering rabbinic tradition that circumcision was

  122. a way to your matter what they do.

  123. They tried to bring about certain aspects of the Old Law

  124. of Moses and bind it on the poor Gentiles that they hated.

  125. Anyway, we call those Judy, izing Christians or people

  126. trying to bring aspects of the Old Law and binding it on.

  127. Gentiles, what actually did they do, this is what they said.

  128. They told the Gentiles you have to be baptized to be saved,

  129. which is true. But then they said, you got to

  130. be circumcised to remain saved and the Apostle Paul had to

  131. correct. All of that, all of that was

  132. wrong, okay? You don't have to be circumcised

  133. to remain safe. Why do they do it?

  134. Because tradition said, rabbinic tradition, it was a weightier

  135. matter. Number two, example, way to your

  136. matter. Rabbinic tradition said that the

  137. Sabbath was a weightier matter. You got to keep the Sabbath.

  138. Incidentally, Jesus nailed the Sabbath to his cross to and were

  139. no longer under the Sabbath law. We don't recognize the seventh

  140. day or Saturday, okay. That's why they hated Jesus.

  141. One of the reasons one, he said, I am the Son of God, but there

  142. was another reason because of the way he handled the Sabbath

  143. day. You know what Jesus said about

  144. the Sabbath, I'll do anything. I want to on the Sabbath.

  145. I'm greater than the With I'm lord of the Sabbath and Jesus

  146. marked the transition between the Sabbath day of the Old

  147. Testament. And the first day of the week of

  148. the New Testament, he marked that transition.

  149. Why did they hate him? Because they said the Sabbath

  150. was a weightier matter. That Jesus didn't call those

  151. things away to your matter. What did Jesus actually say?

  152. Jesus said the weightier matters are these Justice mercy and

  153. faith He said what you're doing is you are good at keeping the

  154. details, which is important. Please get that. but you're

  155. neglecting the weightier matters of Justice, mercy and faith, and

  156. by doing that, you're making your sacrifice, you're making

  157. what you're doing with the details insignificant I have to

  158. make a point before we go any further please, and I'm going to

  159. tell you why we tell you why, because I read all kinds of

  160. Articles. When I Was preparing this

  161. lesson, I was doing this study, I just Googled it.

  162. I Googled, Matthew 23, I wanted to Google stuff about in The

  163. Book of Micah, which we're going to get to in a minute and I

  164. wanted to find out what is the general interpretation that

  165. people have in the world about Matthew 23 about what Jesus

  166. actually saying, and I can't begin to tell you how many

  167. people wrote What matters is Justice, mercy and faith and the

  168. details don't matter. That is not true.

  169. Please get this. Jesus is saying the details and

  170. the weightier matters of Justice.

  171. Mercy and Faith are equally required and equally important.

  172. And, you know, we're going to find out later on our lesson.

  173. If you truly by way of what these words mean, are people of

  174. Justice, mercy, and Faith, guess what you're going to do, you're

  175. going to keep the details. They go together.

  176. They go together. Alright.

  177. Both important. What about the scribes and

  178. Pharisees, though? The he called Hypocrites.

  179. They were not people who Justice mercy and Faith.

  180. Now, this was not anything new by the way about Justice, mercy

  181. and Faith. It actually goes back to the

  182. Book of Micah and that what Jesus is doing is Jesus is

  183. quoting Micah. And Micah specifically is

  184. quoting the general requirements in Deuteronomy chapter 10 will

    Deuteronomy 10 chapter mention

  185. get to them. So this was nothing new.

  186. This goes all the way back in the Book of Micah chapter 6 and

    Micah 6 chapter mention

  187. verse 8. This is what Micah the Minor

  188. Prophets said. He has shown you o man, what is

  189. good and what does the Lord require of you?

  190. But to do justly, love mercy and walk humbly with your God.

  191. Now what we're going to show them later on.

  192. Is when Jesus said Faith, it's the same thing as Mike is saying

  193. walking humbly with your God. It's the same thing.

  194. That's why I asked you to please.

  195. Just if you have an idea of a definition of these things, just

  196. put it aside for just a moment. We're going to get to those

  197. specifics. Okay.

  198. What Jesus was saying, is this what he was saying is by

  199. neglecting the weightier matters of Justice, mercy and Faith.

  200. He's going to describe them in three ways and I'm going to be

  201. brief. This is what he said by doing

  202. that your mission. Point.

  203. This is what you're doing. You're like blind guides who

  204. strain out a gnat and swallow a camel, okay.

  205. Quickly wine at and why camel? Why did our brilliant Lord?

  206. Why did the master use Nat and camel?

  207. You know why? Because the neck in the Old

  208. Testament was the smallest of all unclean things.

  209. A camo in the Old Testament was the largest of unclean.

  210. Thanks, man was not allowed to ever ingest, or eat something

  211. that was unclean and for something not to be.

  212. The unclean it had to chew its cud, and it had to have a cloven

  213. hoof. Somebody said what time we'll

  214. wait, whoa, whoa, wait, wait, wait, camel.

  215. They choose our cut. You've seen a camel chewing.

  216. Its cud right true, but they don't have a cloven hoof.

  217. They were unclean. Jesus is telling them

  218. masterfully. Something they would totally

  219. understand. He said by keeping the details,

  220. which is good, but neglecting the weightier matters of

  221. Justice, mercy and Faith. What's your like is?

  222. You're like A blind guide who straining out the smallest of

  223. unclean things but you're swallowing the greatest, you're

  224. swallowing the camel. All right.

  225. I got to talk about straining out in that.

  226. You've heard me say this before, but I gotta say it again.

  227. I think it's a little funny. They were so concerned about not

  228. eating the net, these Pharisees, they would take a strainer cloth

  229. and put it over a cup. They would take the beverage in

  230. a pitcher, and they would pour the beverage through the

  231. strainer cloth. So, in that couldn't

  232. accidentally get the cut before they drank it.

  233. One scholar said that, I read, he said some of these fastidious

  234. Pharisees would drink, then the beverage through clenched teeth

  235. like this. So they wouldn't accidentally

  236. get one of them little guys in their mouth and swallow it and

  237. be guilty of swallowing something that was unclean even

  238. the smallest of unclean things and they just flick it out of

  239. the teeth Jesus Says, by neglecting Justice.

  240. Mercy and Faith. You know what you are?

  241. You're like a blind guide. Your straightening out the net

  242. but you're swallowing the camel. You don't get it now.

  243. Interesting about this, the second thing he describes them.

  244. He said you're straight out of that swallow, Campbell by doing

  245. here, but this also, what he says, woe to you.

  246. Scribes Pharisees. And oh, oh, oh here's the word.

  247. Again, Hypocrites for you cleanse.

  248. The outside of the cup and dish but inside they are full of

  249. extortion and self-indulgent. This is not a new passage, this

  250. is not a New Concept you know exactly what I'm going to say.

  251. But I say quickly notice please. What you're doing is and I hope

  252. you get the point, he's using these things metaphorically to

  253. describe them self. He said, you're washing the

  254. outside of the cup you're taking that cup and you're polishing

  255. the outside to a mirror shine, but inside it's dirty.

  256. In other words, you are not on the inside what you appear on

  257. the outside. That's one thing.

  258. But then Jesus says cup and Dish.

  259. Let us not go fast by this word dish.

  260. This word dish is not just any ordinary dish and it's not just

  261. something that's connected to the cup.

  262. Historically they have dinner parties back in those days, by

  263. the way. And this dish that the Lord was

  264. talking about here was a very special dish because people knew

  265. at all the guests of a dinner party.

  266. They knew that if the servant brought out this special dish

  267. and they could tell by the outside of the dish, what was

  268. coming, guess what they thought they were going to get the

  269. Delicacies, were now going to be served.

  270. And in other words, when they saw the dish on the outside,

  271. they believe something specials coming on the inside.

  272. That's what Jesus says you are. You're like a cup that you

  273. polish on the outside but that's not you on the inside.

  274. You're like the dish that people think, oh, by your outward

  275. appearance by the outward, way that you're acting, that's

  276. really you and some specials coming.

  277. But that's not the case. That is not you.

  278. What did Jesus say for them to do?

  279. This is what Jesus said you should have done.

  280. First cleanse, the inside of the cup.

  281. And the outside may be clean. Also, you take a cup.

  282. You submerge it. In the sink and soapy water, you

  283. clean the inside Arch, are you're already automatically.

  284. Get me outside too. Are you kind of getting the

  285. point? Clean the inside first?

  286. Fix your inside, be authentic, make sure that's really you.

  287. Oh, but there's more, there's one more example and then we're

  288. gonna move on one more example quickly.

  289. In verse 27. He said, this is you, by the

  290. way, when you neglect the weightier matters of the law of

  291. Justice, mercy and Faith woe to you scribes Pharisees.

  292. There's that word again. Hypocrites for you are like

  293. whitewashed tombs. Little background in Jerusalem

  294. after the spring rains and right before the Passover time.

  295. You know what they would do, they would take lime powder and

  296. they would mix it with water and they would go to all these

  297. Graves and they would paint the two moves.

  298. White one historian said that around Passover time when the

  299. Sun was shining, people always people coming into Jerusalem for

  300. the Passover. They would come in and they

  301. would see these beautiful Graves died.

  302. The countryside Jesus said That's you on the outside, you

  303. appear to be beautiful but that's not used to tell you what

  304. you are. You're like Dead Man's Bones.

  305. It's all you are in the inside. Why did they do that, though?

  306. What was the reason for whitewashing the to knows?

  307. They did it for a very practical reason in the Old Testament.

  308. God said that if somebody would touch a grave or touch the bones

  309. of a dead person, they would be ceremonially unclean.

  310. I think it was for seven days if I'm not mistaken.

  311. A person coming in to Jerusalem at Passover time would never

  312. want to be ceremonially unclean and not be able to participate.

  313. So what they did is they painted the graves Sometimes they would

  314. pay the whole grave sometime, they would paint the mouth of

  315. it. Sometimes the front of the cave

  316. and sometimes they would just paint Bones on it.

  317. A picture of Bones and other words don't touch it.

  318. You know what Jesus says that is you you beautiful on the outside

  319. but inside you are dead men's bones, that's all you are.

  320. A scathing rebuke very serious matter.

  321. Jesus said this in verse 28, even so you outwardly appear

  322. righteous to men, but inside you're full of hypocrisy and

  323. lawlessness. Okay, so in summary, he said, by

  324. neglecting the weightier matters and I'm finished with the

  325. background by neglected, the weightier matters, you've done

  326. three things, you're the like the blind guides is straight out

  327. of that swell, the camel. You like the guy that polishes

  328. the outside the company inside filthy and you are like

  329. whitewashed tombs that appear beautiful on the outside.

  330. But inside, you are rotten like Dead Man's Bones.

  331. All right, what do we learn? What do we learn from this?

  332. We learned for things. God, always looks at the heart.

  333. Always. Looks at the heart.

  334. If we fix the inside, we fix the outside.

  335. Number three. Don't appear beautiful on the

  336. outside, but inwardly be rotten like Dead Man's Bones.

  337. Don't do that. Number four.

  338. Let's keep the commands of God. But don't neglect, the weightier

  339. matters of Justice, mercy and faith.

  340. And I'm going to say it again. The details and the weightier

  341. matters are both required and both equally important got to do

  342. it all. All right. so, what is justice?

  343. What is Mercy? And what's Faith?

  344. Again, we go back to the prophet Micah.

  345. And Jesus was not saying anything new, by the way, all

  346. the way back to the prophet Micah.

  347. Here's the passage again, where he spent time on this again

  348. after this too. He has shown you o man, what is

  349. good and what does the Lord? Require.

  350. This is not a suggestion. This is a requirement.

  351. It has always been a requirement, you know, sometimes

  352. what we think in our mind, we think under the Old Law or in

  353. the Old Testament, God just gave him a list.

  354. As long as they did the list, they fulfilled the requirement.

  355. But only in the New Testament do other things matter.

  356. Not so and the reason we think that sometimes is because Jesus

  357. said you have heard that it has been said, You shall not commit

  358. murder. But I say unto you, whoever

  359. hates his brother or is angry, with his brother Without a Cause

  360. All of those things, you've committed murder already in your

  361. heart. Jesus said you have heard that

  362. it has been said You shall not commit adultery but I say unto

  363. you Amanda looks at a woman to lust after her has committed

  364. adultery already in his heart. Sometimes we think the inward

  365. side or the inward stuff was only taught in the O in the New

  366. Testament and not the old and that's not true all the way back

  367. in the Book of Micah. He's saying this this is what

  368. the lord requires. Do justly, love, mercy, and walk

  369. humbly with your God. The prophet Micah makes it

  370. almost Well, it's not a Verbatim quote, but what it is, it is

  371. specifics about what is taught in Deuteronomy in general.

  372. He gets very specific about what Deuteronomy teaches in general.

  373. Have they been honestly respected?

  374. It would have prevented the leaders from being cruel to

  375. others Committee cruelties Against the poor.

  376. And if they would have kept those weightier Matters by the

  377. way, then their sacrifices would have been acceptable to God.

  378. Which is so important me, ask you something.

  379. Do you want your sacrifice to God?

  380. To be counted. Or to be meaningless.

  381. I'm about you, but I want all the extra credit I can get.

  382. So I want my obedient service to God, to be counted.

  383. I don't want my obedient service to God, to be counted

  384. meaningless because I'm not the person I'm supposed to be, I

  385. don't want that again. It always existed.

  386. It was always required and this is very important to in

  387. understanding this passage because in study of all of this

  388. and in looking at what people think about what this means, so

  389. many people wrote little articles that said, all that

  390. matters is how you treat other people.

  391. If you're a good person, Person and you treat others good.

  392. That's all that God requires, that's not true.

  393. He requires so much more. So we need to understand the

  394. context and it's always existed. Some say there's nothing else

  395. needed and that's not true, but it always existed.

  396. The concept of Justice, mercy and faith in general was given

  397. in Deuteronomy chapter 10 and verse 12.

    Deuteronomy 10 chapter mention

  398. Again, here's the generality. My kid got specific.

  399. I'll read the passage and now, Israel, what does the Lord your

  400. God require of you? But to Fear the lord, your God

  401. and walk in all his ways and to love him to serve your lord,

  402. your God, with all your heart, with all your soul.

  403. Let's talk about God's justice and God's mercy for just a

  404. moment. Remember that song?

  405. Justice and mercy met on Calvary?

  406. One of the lines of that song say the righteousness of God,

  407. demanded judgment. But the goodness of his heart,

  408. revealed his love. So what we understand that to

  409. mean is this God's justice should have been that?

  410. We are lost A punishment has to be given because we should be

  411. lost. Because we sin because we have

  412. sinned. It should have been that.

  413. All mankind is lost eternally because of sin.

  414. But like the song says mercy and judgment met on Calvary.

  415. Instead of God, giving us Justice.

  416. He extended Mercy. And He sent Jesus to die for the

  417. sins of the world. I'm so thankful for that, aren't

  418. you? More on that though.

  419. Let's go. Let's go further.

  420. How about more words to that song?

  421. This is this But all my sins had blocked.

  422. My soul from heaven. So Jesus had to come down from

  423. above. There was no way to keep my soul

  424. from dying. Death was the only sentence

  425. there could be but Jesus saw my guilt and heard my crying.

  426. And became the perfect sacrifice for me.

  427. Justice and mercy met on Calvary, where the pure and

  428. perfect savior took my place, pardon and forgiveness covered,

  429. all of my unrighteousness and every drop of blood was full of

  430. grace. Do you realize that when it

  431. comes to your salvation to things?

  432. Apply Mercy. And Grace.

  433. What's the difference? They both apply Mercy is God not

  434. giving us what we deserve that's to be lost.

  435. Grace is giving us what we don't deserve that salvation.

  436. Grace is unmerited, favor, meaning we don't deserve it.

  437. Grace of Salvation is a gift. But that gift isn't free.

  438. You say it again, the gift is not free.

  439. There had to be a price and there is and there was we

  440. understand the ultimate price the ultimate price is Jesus

  441. dying on the cross. Absolutely.

  442. That was God, extending Mercy, Jesus bought our service

  443. salvation. He purchased our Salvation, he

  444. paved, the way he gave us hope because he died on the cross.

  445. That is the ultimate ultimate price that was paid.

  446. But that's not the only price that has to get paid.

  447. Guess what? Every one of you and me too we

  448. got a price to pay to if we want the gift that comes from God by

  449. grace, that is not free. You got to pay your price too.

  450. you know, that prices Obedience. Yeah, God requires something

  451. from you. And as for the rest of your

  452. life. and if you want the gift of Salvation, which is by Grace,

  453. which we don't deserve, We have to obey.

  454. You know, the Bible says, there's none righteous.

  455. No, not one. But because of our obedient

  456. faith in our obedient actions, in our works of obedience in

  457. honor to God. God looks as at us as though, we

  458. were righteous. And then we get the gift.

  459. And that's everlasting life. Salvation is a gift but it is

  460. not free. So Okay preacher.

  461. You said all that, what I want to know is this what's Justice

  462. mercy and Faith to us? That's what I want to know.

  463. What is it to us today? What does that look like in our

  464. life? Well, first of all, the word

  465. justice means, Well, we go to become like again, he has shown

  466. you o man. What is good?

  467. And what does the Lord require? But to do justly.

  468. Same thing as Justice. And by the way, do you see how

  469. Micah phrased it do? Justly, it's an action frames.

  470. It means you got to do something.

  471. You have to do something to be people of Justice.

  472. It's not just an opinion, it's not just being fair in your

  473. mind. It is something you have to do

  474. being just is to do. Justly, what does that mean?

  475. The word Justice Means get this. In means to uphold what is

  476. Right? According to the will of God.

  477. That's what Justice is. Now, sometimes this is what we

  478. do. Sometimes we try to uphold what

  479. we think is right. But that's not what Justice

  480. Means. To be people of Justice Means to

  481. uphold what is Right? According to the will of God.

  482. In other words, it doesn't matter when I think God requires

  483. a sacrifice of life. So, by the way, being people of

  484. Justice requires sacrifice of life, more upholding, what is

  485. Right? Often requires the sacrifice of

  486. personal aims and ambitions, So for me to be a person of

  487. Justice, I have to uphold what is Right?

  488. According to the will of God, and that might mean, I've got a

  489. sacrifice personal aims and ambitions, Hard to do.

  490. What that means, though. Oh, you mean Justice doesn't?

  491. Just mean being kind of fair know.

  492. It is about being fair. It does apply to our

  493. relationships but more on that later.

  494. But in definition being, just means to uphold what is Right?

  495. According to the will of God, no matter what and put yourself

  496. aside. What else?

  497. The next one? And sometimes people do this,

  498. sometimes people separate Justice from Mercy.

  499. I'm going to give you an example in just a moment.

  500. God never separates Justice from Mercy.

  501. Please get that. What is Mercy?

  502. Justice is upholding? What is Right?

  503. According to the will of God. Mercy.

  504. Is that Justice? Which God wants is based on

  505. kindness and mercy? They go together.

  506. Do you know when our society listen to this?

  507. Please our society thinks that for something to be Justice or

  508. for justice to be served. If somebody commits a crime or

  509. something like that is for the full weight of the law to be

  510. extended upon them and they received the full maximum

  511. punishment. Let me give you an example.

  512. There was a young man who took a gun.

  513. And he went into a liquor store to rob the liquor store.

  514. He didn't mean to kill anybody, he didn't intend to kill

  515. anybody. He took a gun.

  516. He was a dumb kid, he made a terrible mistake.

  517. He goes into the liquor store with the gun to scare the man,

  518. so the man would give him the money.

  519. He would just leave and not even you never have to use the gun.

  520. You know what happened? While he was in there.

  521. He accidentally shot and killed a lady.

  522. Who was just in the store. He was just she was just in the

  523. store. The husband wanted Justice.

  524. You can understand that. You can understand why the

  525. husband wanted Justice. The husband wanted the full

  526. weight of the law extended. Against this person.

  527. The court systems were merciful to the young man.

  528. He paid his price. He went to prison.

  529. But he had a lesser sentence. And the husband of the victim

  530. was so Furious that he took the gun and tried to kill the young

  531. man. Because he said Justice was not

  532. served. That's not true just because

  533. Mercy is extended doesn't mean Justice was not served.

  534. Justice, and mercy were always combined by God.

  535. They were always connected together.

  536. Always. Sometimes, we need to remember

  537. that. And I think it would help us.

  538. Tremendously and how we treat each other?

  539. Remember they go together? Justice and mercy.

  540. Go together. Hang on.

  541. One second. Okay, what about Mercy, though?

  542. The Hebrew word and Micah points to conduct.

  543. There's that word again which is becoming those who are Covenant

  544. Brothers. Loving Mercy is an active

  545. quality. It is translating Mercy in the

  546. deeps. That's how they go together.

  547. Justice and mercy. All right.

  548. What about faith? Faith or walking humbly before

  549. your lord means this measured and careful conduct.

  550. Are you kind of getting the point here?

  551. It has everything to do with how you are, and what you are, and

  552. who you are, and how you behave and what you do.

  553. You can't separate what you do from what you are.

  554. And what we are in the inside, should be the manifestation on

  555. the outside. It should come out that way of

  556. what we are in the inside and that's who people want to see in

  557. our life. Justice Means of holding, what's

  558. right? According to the will of God,

  559. all connected to kindness and mercy and faith, meaning

  560. measured and careful conduct. It's a matter of deferring to

  561. the weigh-in will of God as revealed in his word.

  562. You know, something about that. Micah his point was if they

  563. would have kept these three qualities.

  564. Then they would not have had a problem, but in not keeping

  565. Justice, mercy and Faith. It made their sacrifices

  566. meaningless and I want to illustrate it like this.

  567. Good deeds for the wrong motive. Or the wrong attitude.

  568. Are meaningless. if I do something for Jack, And I give

  569. Jack a hundred bucks. But I don't give Jack a hundred

  570. bucks because he needs it. I don't give Jack a hundred

  571. bucks because I love him. I don't give Jack a hundred

  572. bucks to help him on the side. I give Jack a hundred bucks

  573. because I want everybody to know what I did for Jack.

  574. Pat me on the back you know Jesus said you have your reward

  575. for all those Pharisees that would pray with outstretched

  576. hands in the synagogue to be seen of men he said you've got

  577. your reward whatever praise you get from man but don't think

  578. you're getting anything from God.

  579. If I do that project for all the wrong motive and all the wrong

  580. reasons, why? Got a rotten attitude as I'm

  581. handing it to him. You injection want to do give

  582. the money back. Because deeds done with a rotten

  583. attitude or the wrong motive. Are meaningless.

  584. And so is your sacrifice to God. It's meaningless.

  585. It's so important that everything is part of it in our

  586. life, all right? Let's go.

  587. Back to Matthew 23, where all this began?

  588. Woe to you scribes and Pharisees Hypocrites.

  589. What were they doing wrong? They pay tithe of mint and anise

  590. and cumin, but they have neglected, the weightier matters

  591. of Justice, mercy and faith. And I'm gonna say it again.

  592. The details and the weightier matters.

  593. They are both equal and they are both required.

  594. And I'm glad I didn't say that. Jesus.

  595. Did you ready for Jesus? I'm ready, quote, Jesus.

  596. Here we go. These you ought to have done

  597. without leaving the others undone.

  598. You got to do it all. What's the Lord actually sang in

  599. this. Here, it is in summary.

  600. The Lord is saying Justice, mercy.

  601. And Faith was keeping the details with the right motive.

  602. It's about being authentic and not just going through the

  603. motions to be seen by others or because you get the credit.

  604. It's about not only being a Christian on the outside, but

  605. being Christian on the inside. Number four, get this.

  606. This will be our last closing point it includes, but is not

  607. limited to doing good, and right to our fellow, man, it's the

  608. concept of second Mi religion. It's the concept of Second Mile

  609. religion. In Luke chapter, 10 beginning in

  610. verse 25, listen to this. These were the words that were

  611. spoken. And written in Luke 10 before

  612. Jesus gives an amazing story, he said and behold a certain lawyer

  613. stood up and testing him saying teacher, what shall I do to

  614. inherit eternal life. He said to him what is written

  615. in the law and what is your reading of it?

  616. So he answered and said, You shall love the Lord, your God

  617. with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your

  618. strength, and with all your mind and your neighbor as yourself,

  619. and he said to him, you've answered rightly do this.

  620. And you will live, but notice beliefs, but he wanting to

  621. justify himself said to Jesus. And who is my neighbor?

  622. Are you getting the point? This man?

  623. Wanted eternal life. Jesus said, you got to love your

  624. As yourself, he quoted the law. Jesus says, what do you mean by

  625. that? How do you read it?

  626. When it came to the point of loving your neighbor as

  627. yourself. Do you know what this man

  628. actually says? He says, okay, well, who is my

  629. neighbor I don't know what to do that.

  630. So give me the bare minimum. If you could tell me who he is,

  631. I want to do it because I want eternal life, but just give me

  632. that guy. Tell me who he is.

  633. Folks, listen to me, please don't let this ever become you.

  634. Is your service to God the bare minimum or are you giving it

  635. everything you've got? Are you a bare minimum?

  636. Requirement person? Well, the only a have to do

  637. Sunday morning. Okay, just give me the bare

  638. minimum. I want to go to heaven.

  639. I want eternal life. Just give me that bear, man.

  640. Or does your obedience extend to giving it everything?

  641. You've got to the Lord? We've already noticed.

  642. What happens when you don't give everything to the Lord, you get

  643. a scathing rebuke from the Lord. We don't want that.

  644. Jesus said in response to this this was an absolutely amazing

  645. story. I'm going to be so brief.

  646. Jesus says it was a man that came from Jerusalem one day and

  647. he went down to Jericho. And on that Jericho Road, it was

  648. a road that lasted about 15 miles that descended.

  649. I'm told about 3,000 feet. It was rough and Rocky terrain.

  650. It was Rife with robbers and Highwaymen.

  651. And the Bible says, Jesus said, there was a man on that road and

  652. he fell among Thieves. And they beat him and they left

  653. him for dead. And Jesus says, and oh, by the

  654. way, a priest comes by And the Bible says, when the priest saw

  655. him listen to the language when he saw him.

  656. He passed by on the other side. Don't you think that just maybe

  657. that man was laying there for dead looks up and sees a

  658. priestesses? Oh he'll stop.

  659. You know why? He's a worshiper of God.

  660. Somebody might say that about you, oh, he'll help me.

  661. He's a Christian. He's a worshiper of God.

  662. But he passes by on the other side.

  663. Then Jesus says the levite comes.

  664. And by the way, this is worse. Maybe he's taking all of Levi, a

  665. worker in the temple, he'll stop.

  666. The Bible says that the levite walks over and looks at him.

  667. And then he passed by on the other side.

  668. But then Jesus says, here comes a Samaritan, the combination of

  669. a Jew, and a gentile, and the Jews hated Samaritans.

  670. Samaritan comes and he has compassion on him.

  671. He gets off Eva's animal. He takes all oil.

  672. And he pours oil in his wounds from additional and soothing

  673. purposes. He takes bandages, and he binds

  674. them up and whines them up. He puts him on his animal, he

  675. takes him into the end, he stays all night with him.

  676. And the next day, you know, he does, he goes to the Innkeeper

  677. and he reaches in his pouch. I mean, that Pockets back down.

  678. So obviously pouch, he reaches in his pouch here we took out To

  679. Denari. I that is to day's wages.

  680. I want you to ask yourself. How much do you make in two

  681. days? And you get the gist of what I'm

  682. about to say. He reaches in his pouch takes

  683. two days wages out and gives it to The Innkeeper.

  684. And he said, take care of this man.

  685. That he didn't even know. And then he said, and if it's

  686. not enough, when I come back, I'll pay the rest.

  687. Brilliant. Jesus, thank you.

  688. And then he said this. So which of these three do you

  689. think was neighbor to him who fell among Thieves?

  690. He said, he who showed Mercy on him, then Jesus said to him go

  691. and do likewise You know, something folks, we have a debt

  692. of love. That we need to pay.

  693. We have a debt of love that we owe that is never paid off and

  694. that's because of what the Lord has done for us.

  695. Because of What the Lord Has Done, you're the song at the

  696. cross. The word say, but drops of grief

  697. could never repay. The debt of love.

  698. I owe. Here.

  699. Lord, I Give Myself Away. It's all that I can do.

  700. We have a debt of love for everyone.

  701. And you never pay it off. I'm going to give you a passage

  702. and then we're going to go to our invitation.

  703. Getting give you a passage. Romans chapter 13 and what we do

    Romans 13 chapter mention

  704. is we stop right here. We quote this passage.

  705. Oh no man! Anything and then we stopped

  706. right there. And the reason we stop right

  707. there. We stop right there because We

  708. say what that passage is talking about and it's right right

  709. there. Oh no man.

  710. Anything meaning if I oh Jack you jack again, if I oh Jack, I

  711. need to pee Jack. And I need to make payments or

  712. do whatever I got to do to pay a debt that I owe to Jack.

  713. So owing no, man. Anything means pay your

  714. obligations and you pay them off until when until they're paid

  715. off, if the person forgives the debt you no longer.

  716. Oh, it's paid off. Okay.

  717. So you pay your debts until they're paid off but there's

  718. more Oh, no, man. Anything.

  719. In other words, don't be indebted by not taking care of

  720. your responsibilities. Except To love one another.

  721. That's the dead of love that we must pay on for the rest of our

  722. life and it will never be paid off.

  723. Why? Because the person deserves it?

  724. No, because of Jesus. Because of what the Lord has

  725. done because of what God extended Mercy on the cross and

  726. said, Jesus died for your sins because of that, we have a debt

  727. of love that we will never pay off. then he says, For he who

  728. loves another has fulfilled, the law.

  729. This does not mean, all you have to do is love your fellow man

  730. and you fulfilled all the laws of God.

  731. That's not what that means. It's very specific here in this

  732. context. Oh no man, anything except to

  733. love one. Another love is the context.

  734. For he who loves one another which is the context has

  735. fulfilled. The law was the law, the law of

  736. love. You have fulfilled the law of

  737. love. Wow.

  738. So Justice mercy and Grace. Is keeping the details with the

  739. proper mode of an attitude. It's serving God, with every

  740. fiber of your being with everything you got, it's being

  741. authentic, not only on the outside, but the inside is that

  742. too and it's being the right, kind of person to your fellow,

  743. man. It's all included, all of that

  744. is included. In the weightier matters.

  745. In closing. Remember when I said mercy and

  746. Grace go together but they're different.

  747. God's Mercy is that he doesn't give us what we deserve it has

  748. to be lost. Grace is giving us, what?

  749. We don't deserve that salvation and that's a gift, but it's not

  750. free. But what I said, Our price that

  751. we pay the Lord already paid his price, but the price that we

  752. have to pay is obedience. The first thing you have to obey

  753. You've got to obey the gospel. I want you to listen very

  754. closely right now. If you want to go to heaven, I'm

  755. going to tell you exactly what you have to do.

  756. If you don't do this folks, you can't go to heaven.

  757. You have to obey the gospel first then instead obedient life

  758. for the rest of your life, but it begins with the gospel.

  759. How do you do that? So simple, you got to hear the

  760. word of God, Romans, 10:17. So, faith comes by hearing and

  761. hearing by the word of God, you've done that today, you've

  762. heard the word of God, and when you hear the word of God, you

  763. got a choice to make. Everybody has a choice.

  764. The Bible says in Hebrews 11 and 6, you gotta believe with all

  765. your heart. Let me ask you something.

  766. Do you believe, surely you do? Surely you do you gotta believe?

  767. Do you believe in Jesus? Do you believe?

  768. Jesus is son of God. Surely you did.

  769. Without faith. It's impossible to please him

  770. for. He who comes to God, must

  771. believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of those who

  772. diligently seek him. What else?

  773. You got to make a change in your life.

  774. You got to repent of your sins acts 17:30.

    Acts 17:30

  775. Truly these times of ignorance, God overlooked but now commands

  776. all men everywhere to repent Then you must say these precious

  777. words. You have to confess that Jesus

  778. Christ is the Son of God acts 8:37.

    Acts 8:37

  779. Then Philip said, if you believe with all your heart, you may.

  780. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the

  781. Son of God. All of these four steps are

  782. prerequisites to the point of salvation, but you're not saved

  783. yet. If you're going to obey the

  784. gospel, here it is. You got to be baptized for the

  785. remission of your sins. Mark 16:16.

    Mark 16:16

  786. He who believes and is baptized, will be saved.

  787. But he, who does not believe will be condemned.

  788. Do you believe in Jesus Today? Show you do.

  789. If that's the case step out in obedience, repent of your sins

  790. confess, his name as the Son of God.

  791. Be baptized in water today for the remission of your sins obey,

  792. the gospel and start your path, pay the price, start your path,

  793. as a Christian. Maybe you've taken those steps,

  794. maybe you fall on, what a great time to come back right now.

  795. Today, repent of those things confess, those things will pray

  796. with you and for you and God will forgive and restore be

  797. wanted me to class come forward. While we stand most We thank you
