-
It is certainly wonderful to be here with all of you.
-
I've enjoyed so far worshipping together.
-
And all of you that are here, we say welcome and I hope and pray
-
that what we have to consider for a little while this morning
-
would be edifying, do you and very encouraging to you from the
-
scriptures? Today, I'm going to start a
-
series that will take us quite some time.
-
I'm going to start a series on the great Sermon on the Mount.
-
It was in fact and indeed the greatest sermon ever preached
-
You know that phrase? I just said the greatest sermon
-
ever preached. I was reminded of something.
-
My mother may remember this my mother and father were baptized
-
into Jesus Christ in 1973. And I don't know how many years
-
after that that this event happened.
-
But my father was asked at the last minute to give a lesson,
-
and I remember as a little boy, what in the world is my dad
-
going to teach on? My father got up in the pulpit
-
and his introduction, and this is what he said, he said today,
-
you're going to hear the greatest sermon you have ever
-
heard. and I remember as a little boy, sitting there
-
thinking man what you're going to say next, And my father, read
-
The Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5, 6 and 7, I remember it.
-
Took him about 20 minutes and I got to thinking about that.
-
Some of you have heard me say this before some of you have
-
not, I'm going to say it again. The greatest man that ever lived
-
who was the greatest preacher, the world ever knew preach the
-
greatest sermon ever preached in 20 minutes.
-
Sometimes we as preachers and teachers of the Gospel think
-
that in order to really exhaust a subject or edify on a subject
-
or really get to the meat of the subject, we got to talk for a
-
really long time. Jesus, the master preach, the
-
greatest sermon ever preached. And by the way, I'll just say
-
this in The Sermon, on the Mount, it is the richest deepest
-
Medias, things, ever taught, and the Lord, did it in 20 minutes
-
thought that was rather interesting.
-
You know, I was given some great advice as a preacher as a young
-
man and as I got older, I've been given a lot of advice as a
-
preacher. Seems like a lot of people want
-
to give people advice and some advice was really great and some
-
advice was not so great but I'm going to tell you one of the
-
greatest Things of the best advice.
-
I was given as a preacher. I wish it was given to me
-
earlier on, it was given to me later on, but I want to tell
-
you, I don't always accomplish this, but I always try and this
-
is what this man said to me. Very good friend of mine.
-
He said, Frank, if you really want to maximize your
-
Effectiveness as a speaker, then learn to say more.
-
With less words. And that's what the master did.
-
That is what Jesus did. He said more with less words,
-
let's begin as an introductory text.
-
Please in Matthew 5, verses 1 and 2.
-
And by the way, this sermon here is just an introduction to The
-
Sermon on the Mount. We're going to get into what he
-
preached later on in other sermons.
-
This is just an introduction. Matthew Chapter 5, beginning in
Matthew 5 chapter mention
-
verse 1, And seeing the multitudes he went up on a
-
mountain and when he was seated, his disciples came to him, then
-
he opened his mouth and taught them saying.
-
The things that Jesus said after that were nothing, short of
-
masterful, he was indeed the greatest.
-
Okay. So the Sermon on the Mount is
-
Matthew, 5, 6 and 7, let's back up the first four chapters of
-
the Book of Matthew successfully, portrayed, Jesus
-
Christ as the Messiah, and number, To they demonstrate the
-
Dual nature of his mission that's found in chapters 1
-
through 4. What was the Dual nature of the
-
Lord's mission number one to fulfill the Old Law of Moses.
-
We're going to get to what that means in just a moment.
-
But that's number one. He came to fulfill the Old Law
-
of Moses. Number two, he came to establish
-
the new law of Jesus Christ. His law that we are under today,
-
but let's talk about the Old Law of Moses, for just a moment.
-
And The fulfilling of the Old Law in the Old Law of Moses in
-
Matthew Chapter 5 and verses 17 and 18.
Matthew 5 chapter mention
-
This is what Jesus said, he said, do not think that I came
-
to destroy the law or the prophets.
-
I did not come to destroy, but to fulfill, he said not one jot
-
or one Tittle will by no means pass from the law until all be
-
fulfilled. What Jesus was saying, here in
-
this passage, he said I didn't come to destroy.
-
The law or the prophets, I came to fulfill the law or the
-
prophets one of the Dual Natures of his mission.
-
Ok now what he's saying is this, whatever this means we'll get to
-
this in just a moment not even a jot or tittle will pass from the
-
Old Law until all things are fulfilled.
-
So what in the world is a jot? And what in the world is a
-
tittle the word jot, by the way, is a word that actually means to
-
Describe the smallest letter of the alphabet.
-
Now, I don't usually do this. I usually just tell you, for
-
example, something comes from the word in the original and
-
I'll tell you what it means, but I don't usually pronounce the
-
Greek words anymore. I used to get to the meaning of
-
it, but I got to use this name and I got to say the name.
-
I got to say, with the Greek word is, you know why?
-
Because you and I know exactly what that is.
-
Especially the old timers like my father, it's the word iota.
-
Ever hear the word IO dinner sentence.
-
My dad used to say we didn't accomplish anything though.
-
No, you didn't accomplish anything today, Frank.
-
Not one iota, meaning. Not the least little bit.
-
What is Jesus saying here? Not the least little bit of the
-
Old Law will pass away until all things are fulfilled.
-
That's number one, that's called a jot.
-
What's a tittle? A tittle comes from the Greek
-
word literally, meaning little horn.
-
Okay. And it's the smallest brush of a
-
pen stroke. What's that mean?
-
All right. In the English, alphabet, we
-
need to have a little horn. We need to have a tittle to
-
Penguins between two very similar letters.
-
I'm going to give you an example to similar letters in the
-
English alphabet. You know, what, we need to
-
distinguish between the two. We need a tittle here.
-
It is the capital letter C and the capital letter G, they look
-
the same, but in order to distinguish between the two, we
-
need this little Tunnel right there.
-
We need the little horn right there.
-
We had the tiny little pen stroke.
-
What's Jesus saying he's living under the Old Law of Moses, he's
-
preaching this sermon. Even during the Old Law of Moses
-
and he's saying, not even the smallest letter of the alphabet
-
or even the smallest. Pen stroke would change from the
-
Old Law until when until all things are fulfilled.
-
All right? What are you talking about about
-
all things being fulfilled? First of all, all things are
-
fulfilled when his Earthly Ministry or his Earthly mission
-
is completed. and by the way, that ends in his death, on the
-
cross in Colossians chapter 2 and verse 14, Having wiped out
Colossians 2 chapter mention
-
the handwriting of requirements. Get this.
-
That was against us. What's that?
-
That's the old law of Moses. But did you get the first part
-
in that great having wiped out, the handwriting of requirements
-
that was against us, which was contrary to us?
-
All of that was the old law of Moses and he has taken it out of
-
the way. What did he do?
-
He nailed it to his cross. Now, guess what?
-
Now, all things are fulfilled. So in Matthew 5, 6 and 7, Jesus
-
preaches, his greatest sermon and he gives us a new system of
-
law in The Sermon, on the Mount. He lays the groundwork for his
-
subsequent Ministry, and development at the church by
-
depicting the nature of the kingdom and its subject.
-
And that's very important because guess what we are in the
-
Kingdom, more of that in a minute.
-
And we are the subjects. So we got to really listen to
-
what he's got to say. Here's stop to consider that
-
Jewish people back in those days.
-
Really believed in and wanted a messiah.
-
They really wanted a messiah. The problem with the Jewish
-
people that lived in the days of Jesus, is they misunderstood
-
grossly, misunderstood the nature of the Messianic Kingdom,
-
they thought that Jesus was coming to relieve them or save
-
them from the oppressive thumb of Rome.
-
In other words, Roman occupation in Palestine and they thought
-
that the Messiah was going to come and remove that by
-
establishing a political Kingdom, an Earthly Kingdom.
-
Rain on an Earthly throne and finally Rome would no longer
-
oppress them. That's what they thought.
-
And by the way, let's back up, you might remember years ago
-
when I talk there, sermon on the triumphal entry into Jerusalem,
-
I'll be very brief about this, but I got to make this point.
-
He rides in on the back of a Colt of a donkey.
-
Do you remember what the people said?
-
They said, Hosanna to the highest.
-
If you look up the word hosanna in an English dictionary, it
-
will say something like this. A form of praise and
-
recognition. So sometimes we hear the word
-
Hosanna and we think he was just being praised in that passage
-
not so fast. The word Hosanna.
-
There comes from the Hebrew word hoshea nod, you know what it
-
means? Save us.
-
Save us. They thought that Jesus was
-
going to come in and save them from Rome, but Jesus came to be
-
our Messiah to save us from hell.
-
I think I like what he did best. Who cares about oppression?
-
He came to save our soul. The Sermon on the Mount reveals
-
the true type of his kingdom that he came to establish by
-
focusing on spiritual issues. He gave spiritual principles
-
that demonstrates that he wants to rain.
-
Get this please, he wants to rein in the human heart.
-
That's what Jesus wants. He wants to rein in your heart,
-
he wants to be the motivating factor in everything you do.
-
He's not going to rain on an Earthly Throne.
-
He wants to rein in your heart and change your life.
-
I got to tell you something, we need to spend time trying to
-
bring people to Jesus. Jesus, as the Messiah Jesus as
-
the savior. Because if people would be
-
converted to Jesus and truly have Jesus raining in their
-
hearts, don't you see that? Everything else falls into place
-
automatically? It's about being converted to
-
Jesus. That's what he wants.
-
He wants to rein in your heart and not an Earthly throne and by
-
the way, it was never going to be an Earthly Throne.
-
He made this point, very clear to Pilot Jesus said this before,
-
pilot before he was crucified. He said, my kingdom is not of
-
this world. If my kingdom were of this
-
world, my servants would fight so that I should not be
-
delivered to the Jews but now my kingdom is not from here.
-
Okay. Now, the Jews believe in Jesus
-
day, there were very fond of the Old Law.
-
We know that Here was the problem.
-
The religious leaders misapplied.
-
It And they corrupted it. With their human Traditions.
-
Okay. What am I talking about human
-
Traditions? First of all, let's go to
-
Matthew 15 and 3 he answered and said to them, why do you also
-
transgress the Commandment of God because of your tradition?
-
I got to say is I don't have time to go into Matthew 15.
-
I'm just gonna say this quickly, the context of Matthew 15 and
-
the context of what Jesus is saying here is very simple.
-
He's talking about the tradition, the Tradition of the
-
elders about hand washing. Okay.
-
Now, is there anything wrong with hand-washing?
-
Absolutely not for cleanliness purposes.
-
Absolutely not. In fact, I don't want people
-
touching my stuff for my food without washing their hands.
-
We all know that washing your hands is a good thing.
-
So what's he talking about Jesus says you transgress the
-
Commandment of God because of your tradition.
-
They were taking the tradition of hand-washing.
-
Not for cleanliness purposes, they were doing it for Ceremony
-
purposes because they believed it was an act of piety.
-
It was an act of being holy and that became a human tradition.
-
Now human Traditions, please stay with me.
-
Human Traditions are not wrong in themself But when a human
-
tradition causes us to transgress the Commandment of
-
God, now we got a problem. That's what they were doing.
-
The Lord's point to the Pharisees was this, they had a
-
willingness to violate the law of God because of those human
-
Traditions. I want to make a few points
-
about tradition. Okay.
-
First of all, there is Apostolic tradition this episode
-
tradition. By the way, passed down by the
-
apostles written, in the word of God in the New Testament.
-
Okay, Apostolic tradition is binding and we must bind it and
-
we can't deviate from it. In other words, it Speak with
-
the Bible. Speaks beside it with a Bible
-
silent. We stick to Apostolic tradition
-
by the word of God. That is a binding tradition.
-
Okay. There are other human Traditions
-
though that are acceptable, but can't be binding.
-
And may I just say this to it is just as wrong to bind with the
-
Lord is not bound, as it is too loose with the Lord, has not
-
loosed. Here's my question.
-
What are human Traditions? One fast example in my house a
-
And tradition is Thanksgiving and we do the same thing every
-
every year at Thanksgiving. I'm so thankful for Tina being
-
such a great hostess. Everybody comes over, we eat
-
around a time of a certain football game where we cheer for
-
a certain football team and hope that team doesn't lose that day
-
tradition. Human tradition.
-
No problem. But are there human traditions
-
in the church? Yes.
-
Give you an example. Are they wrong?
-
No, let me show you what I mean. if a human tradition is an
-
expedient, Which expedites the process of what's been
-
commanded? No problem.
-
For example, in the scriptures, we are told to sing, we are
-
commanded to sing. We are commanded to sing with
-
the melody in our hearts to the Lord, okay?
-
So what we do to expedite that process is we have what we call
-
a songbook, what do we need to say?
-
We need two things, right? We need notes and we need to
-
know what is the song book. It is a book filled with words.
-
Treasury notes in tune. I mean words and to we need
-
those two things words and tune, okay?
-
A songbook expedite that process traditionally, we have a song
-
book that includes words and to me, that's a tradition.
-
In the Philippines. They have her songbook, it has
-
words but they don't have a tune.
-
You know why? They don't write the music.
-
What they have is words and they already know the tune.
-
So they sing the tune because they know the tune and sing the
-
words. Same thing that's their
-
tradition. No problem.
-
Give another example. We are commanded to teach from
-
the word of God when we Assemble.
-
And you may remember some of this remember the old timers
-
that use bedsheets? The old-time preachers, boy,
-
they put that bedsheet up there and maybe it would have
-
scriptures on there. Maybe an outline on there may be
-
a diagram of the Tabernacle and maybe a preacher would stand
-
there with a long stick, a pointer and he would point to
-
various aspects of the Tabernacle he would say, look
-
over here. This is this, and over there.
-
That's is that. Anyone with that know it is an
-
expedient that expedites the Commandment to teach.
-
It doesn't add anything, it doesn't subtract from anything,
-
it doesn't corrupt anything. So traditionally preachers would
-
use a bedsheet, guess what? We no longer have that
-
tradition. Another tradition came in human
-
tradition. That expedited the process, it
-
was called a chalkboard. Remember those?
-
We don't have one now. We had a whiteboard on the other
-
side of this, though, by the way, chalkboard, and people
-
would write on the chalkboard and that would expedite the
-
process, it would give a visual aid, it didn't add anything,
-
didn't subtract from anything. You didn't corrupt anything
-
Human tradition. I remember we got a white board
-
here. You know what my father-in-law
-
had amazing penmanship. And he said, one day, I hate the
-
Whiteboard. I said why Darrell he said?
-
Because I can write better with chalk.
-
That was his preference. Either one was perfectly fine,
-
it didn't matter, they were both expedience, Expediting the
-
process by tradition. You might find a chalkboard or a
-
whiteboard in a church building, which leads me to this
-
tradition. PowerPoint.
-
Now, you know a person may not like PowerPoint.
-
But it doesn't add to anything. It doesn't subtract from
-
anything. It doesn't correct anything.
-
It's a tradition. Now, that many places have
-
PowerPoint. The same thing, human,
-
Traditions. That don't violate the
-
Commandments of God, okay? Really quickly, what then would
-
be a human tradition that we could bring into the church.
-
That would violate the Commandment of God, it would be
-
anything that would change what's been authorized?
-
And that's why we in the Church of Christ, don't have
-
instruments of music, because we've been commanded to sing and
-
sing with the melody in our hearts to the Lord.
-
So, adding an instrument, Of Music would change the music, it
-
would change the Commandment therefore we don't have that
-
that would be a human tradition. That would violate what the word
-
of God is said, that's why we don't do it, okay?
-
Let's go back to those Jewish, folks.
-
The pervasive thought, among the Jews was that Mount Sinai.
-
When you talk about revelation, God speaking to man Mount Sinai,
-
symbolize the summit of God's communication to man.
-
And by the way, that misunderstanding also plagued
-
the days of the early church as the judaizers sought to
-
discredit the teaching of the Apostles.
-
Okay. There's Sermon on the Mount
-
stands in contrast to Mount Sinai because God never intended
-
for the Old Law. To remain forever, one of the
-
purposes of the Old Law was to prepare Israel to bring the
-
Savior For All Mankind. Galatians chapter 3, beginning
Galatians 3 chapter mention
-
in verse 23, before Faith came, we were kept under guard by the
-
law kept for the faith which should afterwards be revealed.
-
Therefore, the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ that we
-
might be justified by faith. It was never God's intention
-
that the Old Law of Moses or the oh, Old Testament precepts would
-
stand forever as a ruling body or ruling piece of Authority for
-
mankind. Notice this word right here, the
-
word tutor, you may know this. It's also found in the King
-
James version as Schoolmaster, what was the Schoolmaster and
-
what was a tutor history tells us that a Schoolmaster or tutor
-
never actually did the teaching? The Schoolmaster literally
-
picked up the student and brought the student.
-
To the master teacher, the master teacher is Jesus Christ,
-
that's what the Old Law did. It took the student or the pupil
-
it took man to Jesus Christ. The master teacher.
-
Now. Jesus came, as we said to
-
fulfill the Old Law of Moses. Matthew, 5:17 and 18.
-
And number two, he came to be the perfect, savior, John 1 and
-
29. John the Baptist said, Behold
-
the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
-
He came to be the savior of the world, okay?
-
In the New Testament, folks, in the new text of Testament.
-
It is God's final Revelation to man.
-
God has spoken for the last time and it's revealed in the New
-
Testament, the essence of God's final Revelation is found in
-
contained. In The Sermon on the Mount.
-
And by the way there are reasons why it's the greatest sermon
-
ever preached and you might say well you already said it's the
-
greatest man that ever lived the greatest preacher the world ever
-
knew obviously he is the Son of God.
-
He was perfect in any way surely that's the reason it's the
-
greatest sermon tow but wait there's more.
-
There are reasons why it's the greatest sermon ever preached.
-
The Sermon on the Mount was things that were preached by
-
Jesus Christ himself that were fresh and new.
-
They were not just a reinterpretation of Old
-
Testament precepts. It is about new revelation,
-
please get that new revelation and it's used to demonstrate
-
God's will for Christians. Matthew said in Matthew chapter
Matthew 4 chapter mention
-
4, and verse 23, that Jesus went about all Galilee preaching, the
-
kingdom, preaching, the gospel of the Kingdom, what immediately
-
follows that is The Sermon on the Mount.
-
I like, what one scholar said, he said as a result of that, The
-
Sermon on the Mount is Kingdom law.
-
Its authoritative for the New Testament church today.
-
And why is that important here? It is, folks, here it is.
-
Because we are the church. And the church is the kingdom.
-
So, the law comes from Jesus and what he preached was Kingdom
-
law. You know, at the end of The
-
Sermon on the Mount, the people were astonished at the teaching
-
of Jesus. They were astonished at his
-
Doctrine and it has at his authority such astonishment
-
proves that what they heard was something that they had heard
-
for the first time not like anything else taught before one
-
scholar said, If The Sermon on the Mount is not law for
-
Christians today, then the church is only left with the
-
book of Acts. The Epistles or the letters and
-
the Book of Revelation. But remember this, most of what
-
we find in the first four books of the New Testament, that's
-
Matthew, Mark, Luke and John occur before Jesus dies.
-
So, as one commentator said, If The Sermon on the Mount is not
-
does not apply to Christians today, then neither do the rest
-
of those books. So in The Sermon on the Mount,
-
Jesus use the context of the Old Law and contrasted it with the
-
new law. Let me show you what I mean.
-
Jesus Takes four basic positions, toward the Mosaic
-
law. Number one.
-
Jesus, sometimes accepts the teaching of the Old Testament.
-
And then he brings it over just as it is in Matthew, Chapter 5
Matthew 5 chapter mention
-
and verse has 43 and 44, you have heard that it was said, You
-
shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy, but I say to
-
you, love your enemies. Bless those who curse, you do
-
good to those that hate you and pray for those who spitefully
-
use, you and persecute you. So, In this passage Jesus,
-
accepts that a man must love his neighbor and he binds it for all
-
time. So, like I said, just a moment
-
ago, sometimes, Jesus, accepts the teaching of the Old
-
Testament, and he brings it over just as it is as found in
-
Matthew, 5, 43 and 44, okay? But number two, now, Sometimes
-
Jesus adds to the Old Testament teaching in Matthew chapter 5,
-
verses 21 and 22. You have heard that it was said
-
to those of old, you shall not murder.
-
And whoever murders will be in danger of the Judgment.
-
But I say to you, that whoever is angry with his brother
-
without a, cause shall be in danger of the judgment and
-
whoever says to his brother raka shall be in danger of the
-
council, but, whoever says, you fool shall be in danger of Hell,
-
Fire. Okay, In this passage.
-
Jesus, accepts the prohibition of murder, but he also adds the
-
prohibition of anger. I have to say something about
-
anger and what this actual word here means because the Bible
-
does say words like this, be angry.
-
And sin not and incidentally the direct rendering of that is
-
really this do not be angry that it causes you to sin.
-
Is being angry in itself in a general sense, a sin?
-
No, in fact, obviously, Jesus was angry, when Jesus came in
-
and overturned. The tables of the moneychangers.
-
He was obviously angry and yet, the Lord did not send.
-
The Bible says, there was. Neither guile found in his
-
mouth. He was perfect in every way.
-
Jesus did not sin, so anger in itself is not sin.
-
The question is, what is the word angry mean in this passage?
-
Because what Jesus is saying is, yes, the prohibition of murder,
-
that's true old law. But now I'm going to add the
-
prohibition of anger. What's the anger he's talking
-
about? Here it is.
-
The word anger here means an emotional distaste for another.
-
You fill in the blanks. Have you ever been mad?
-
Yeah. Yeah.
-
We've all been mad. Being angry is one thing being
-
angry to the point that it causes us to have an emotional
-
distaste for another. That's the prohibition.
-
That Jesus added. What else did Jesus say?
-
He said the word you can't say the word Rocca.
-
What is that? That's an Aramaic term which
-
scorns a man's mind. Calling him stupid.
-
I know we don't like that word stupid.
-
I know that's a word that we don't like I get it.
-
But I'm going to tell you what the definition simply means.
-
Lacking intelligence. And I want to say this to Jesus
-
was not making a Prohibition for saying these words in a casual
-
sense or even in a flippant sense, he's talking about the
-
heart and all begins with an emotional distaste for another.
-
Please get that because there are things that are stupid.
-
In fact, the Bible doesn't even use that word.
-
One translation says avoid foolish and unlearned questions.
-
Another translation says avoid foolish.
-
And stupid questions. It means that which, lacks
-
intelligence, they gender Strife, okay?
-
So that's one thing, but it's an entirely different thing to
-
score in a man's man's mind by calling him that when you have
-
an emotional distaste for him. And what else?
-
The word fool? The word fool scorns, a man's
-
heart and character. And I got to tell you something,
-
there are things in life that are foolish, there really is.
-
Oh, there are things that are foolish.
-
That the Bible even says this too.
-
By the way, in the Old Testament, says, only a fool
-
says there is no God. So there is such a thing as a
-
fool. Okay, there is such a thing and
-
there are things that are foolish.
-
Yes. And in the common vernacular,
-
today people use that word like you're saying, hey buddy,
-
they're using that word now, for some reason, Times have changed,
-
you know, nowadays, but back in my day, they said, dude, hey
-
dude. Now it's yo and bro, and fool
-
and these are words used. That's not what Jesus is talking
-
about. He's talking about using these
-
words as an emotional, distaste for another scorning, a man's
-
heart and character. That's what he's talking about.
-
It's about the heart, it's about the intention of what you're
-
saying it and how you're saying it, that's the point.
-
That's the point. So what was this point about
-
this first? Here it is, nobody has the right
-
to emotions that lead to contemptuous speech, that demean
-
others Or harmful Deeds are actions against his fellow, man.
-
That's what he was talking about, okay?
-
Number three, the third basic position toward the Mosaic law.
-
Jesus sometimes subtracts from, or qualifies the Old Law, let's
-
notice Matthew, 5, 31, and 32. Furthermore, it has been said,
-
whoever divorces his wife. Let him give her a certificate
-
of divorce, stop right there. By the way, in the beginning it
-
was not. So in the beginning God always
-
wanted. Yes one man.
-
Yes to be married to one woman that was always God's plan and
-
that they would be married for Life till death.
-
Do they part? But under the Old Law of Moses
-
because of the hardness of their hearts, the Bible says it was
-
permitted to get a divorce. Only, if Moses said, if you got
-
your paperwork in, you gave her a certificate of divorce meant
-
that was under the Old Law. And you know what?
-
Historically speaking, people were getting a divorce for
-
anything and everything. What did Jesus say?
-
He's going to add to it, subtract from it and qualify it.
-
He says this. It has been said, whoever
-
divorces his wife. Let him give her a certificate
-
of course. But I say to you, that whoever
-
divorces his wife for any reason except for sexual immorality
-
causes her to commit adultery. And whoever marries a woman who
-
is divorced, commits adultery. So in these passages, Jesus
-
limits divorce to the cause of fornication and subtracts from
-
it. The permissive Mosaic system,
-
number four, the fourth position, Jesus Took toward the
-
Mosaic law. Sometimes he rejected the Old
-
Law in Thai early. Matthew 5:38 through, 42.
-
You have heard that it was said an eye for an eye, and a tooth
-
for a tooth. But I tell you do not resist an
-
evil person. Whoever slaps, you on the right
-
cheek, turn the other to him the other.
-
Also, if anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let
-
him have your cloak. Also and whoever compels you to
-
go one mile, go with him two. Give to him, who asks you and
-
from him who wants to borrow from you do, not turn away,
-
amazing things. The Lord said, Jesus is making a
-
contrast here. He's rejecting the concept of an
-
eye for an eye. He is he is contrasting that
-
with don't resist an evil person.
-
It is other passages in The Sermon on the Mount he is
-
contrasting. Hating one's enemy contradicting
-
that with loving your enemy. So what Jesus taught in The
-
Sermon on the Mount was new, it was fresh, it had never been
-
taught before The Sermon on the Mount accomplishes three
-
masterful purposes and truly making it the greatest sermon
-
ever preached. Here they are.
-
This is the reason is the greatest sermon ever preached.
-
It depicts Jesus Kingdom as spiritual rather than physical.
-
Number two, it contrasts the Mosaic law with a new law of
-
Jesus Christ. Number three, it contrast.
-
The religious hypocrisy of the Pharisees with the qualities of
-
God's children. The sermon stands as a
-
masterpiece one. Man said a Wellspring for
-
countless sermons. No.
-
Other selection of scripture more aptly.
-
Depicts the nature of God Than The Sermon on the Mount.
-
I've often wondered, I don't know about you.
-
I've often wondered what it must have been like To be there that
-
day. And then all of a sudden Jesus
-
just starts preaching. And he goes from one subject to
-
the next subject to the next subject to the next subject.
-
And he spot-on, perfect. I don't know what that's like.
-
No notes, no preparation. Just the son of God.
-
The greatest one ever. And he just preached.
-
I've often wondered what it would have been like to sit
-
there and listen to the words that were coming out of his
-
mouth. Preaching, the greatest sermon.
-
Ever preached, you know, this sermon has been appropriately
-
called the Magna Carta or the document of the Kingdom.
-
It has been called the manifesto or the Declaration of policy of
-
the king. It's also been called the
-
compendium or the concise detailed information of Christ's
-
Doctrine. And because it seems to come
-
right after the choosing of the 12.
-
It is also called his ordination address to them.
-
But simply put simply put its the greatest sermon ever
-
preached. To us today.
-
Because it's the truth. It's just the truth. you know,
-
sometimes it's really hard, do an introduction and keep it So
-
it's not boring. I hope I've done that it's hard.
-
But I felt like we needed to cover as an introduction in a
-
sermon before we get into the context of what he actually
-
preached to have a better understanding of what he means,
-
as he goes through, it's going to take us some time to get
-
through Matthew, 5, 6 and 7. But this is our sermon today.
-
The greatest sermon ever preached, the introduction to
-
The Sermon on the Mount and now we do what we always do.
-
We never, we never close a service.
-
After we teach them the word of God without extending an
-
invitation to somebody that might be subject to the We'll
-
call an invitation to someone. That's not a Christian that
-
would like to become one. The steps are very, very simple.
-
If you want to become a child of God, if you want to be saved,
-
it's very simple. The Bible says, the first thing
-
you have to do is hear the word of God, Romans, 10:17.
-
So then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God
-
upon hearing the word of God. We have a choice to make in
-
Hebrews 11 and 6. The Bible says, we must believe
-
with all our heart without faith.
-
It's impossible to please him for.
-
He who comes to God, must believe that he is, and that he
-
is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him.
-
Upon hearing the word of God and believing we have something else
-
we must do to. Also we got to repent of our
-
sins, acts 17 and 30 truly these times of ignorance, God,
-
overlooked. But now commands all men
-
everywhere to repent, all that means is I got to change my
-
life, hear the word of God, believe in Jesus with all your
-
heart. Repent, and change your life.
-
I'm gonna change my life today. Then what are you going to do?
-
You're going to say the greatest thing you will ever say.
-
You will confess the Lord Jesus Christ, as the Son of God acts
-
8:37. Then Peter said Philip said, if
-
you believe with all your heart you made and he answered and
-
said I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God upon taking
-
these four steps that we've noticed so far, you're a fit
-
candidate to go down to the Waters of baptism.
-
That is the point of salvation. We must be baptized for the
-
remission of sins, Mark 16:16. He who believes and is baptized,
-
will be saved. But he, who does not believe
-
will be condemned. If you've never taken these
-
steps of obedience, You can do that today.
-
We would love to assist you in that.
-
Maybe you have. Maybe there are things in your
-
life that are not what they should be.
-
Maybe you've straight away. Be a great time to come back.
-
Just repent of those things. Confess, those things would pray
-
with you and for you, and God will forgive and restore.
