  1. Good morning, everyone. It is a beautiful day to be

  2. together to worship Our God today and I'm privileged to have

  3. the chance to lead our study through the book of Galatians.

  4. And today we're covering chapter 2 about a month ago, we cover

  5. chapter one. So I'm going to do a quick

  6. refresher because I know for my own even studying I needed that

  7. constant refresher as I go through.

  8. So today we're going to do a quick refresher of chapter one

  9. and try to get all the way through Galatians Chapter 2

    Galatians 2 chapter mention

  10. today. I just want to say a word of

  11. appreciation, Rishi ation for a congregation as a teacher, you

  12. know, putting in the time to study it takes a lot of work for

  13. anyone who studies. And and there's nothing more

  14. motivating as a team as a person trying to lead a study then to

  15. see that people are putting the stuff into their life and you

  16. can tell by conversations we have with one another.

  17. The way people act, the way we talk the way we pray, the way

  18. people and our individual conversations, talk to one

  19. another, you can tell people are putting the F into action and as

  20. someone leading a study, there's nothing more motivating than

  21. knowing. Okay, this is going to good use.

  22. This is fruitful work and I can tell that.

  23. So, thank you for your encouragement in the lives that

  24. you live lead. And looking forward to hopefully

  25. learning something together today in Chapter 2 of Galatians.

  26. So, if you want to have this open in front of you, this is

  27. where we're going to spend all of our time today.

  28. And I'll remind you of, kind of our keynote verse that I put on

  29. the board the first time and I think this summarizes the whole

  30. point of the book of Galatians pretty well.

  31. So remember Paul is writing this letter to a region called

  32. galatia. It's a bunch of people in

  33. galatia churches, in galatia and he tells them to stand fast or

  34. hold on strong, therefore in the liberty or the freedom, which It

  35. has made us free and do not be entangled again with a yoke of

  36. bondage, he's going to use this phraseology, this bondage and

  37. this being tied back and a lot of times he's mentioning the Old

  38. Testament, how they wanted to pull the people back to the Old

  39. Testament and say, okay, yeah, we need to be Christians, but

  40. you also need to be tied into the Old Law.

  41. And the hard thing for these Jews was, they had spend their

  42. whole lifetime, and they had spent so much history, being the

  43. center of God's plan. The Jewish people had this Rich

  44. history and they were not ready to let go of it.

  45. And the way they thought their history was important.

  46. And so they started trying to say, okay, yeah, you need to be

  47. Christians, but you have to be kind of a compound Christian,

  48. you have to be a Jew and a Christian.

  49. So if you want to become a Christian, you have to first

  50. become Manju, and that's the entryway into Christianity.

  51. You have to be circumcised like under the law of Moses.

  52. Under the Old Testament, to become a Christian And that's

  53. this entanglement because it was just making things all tangled

  54. up and you had to be pulled back to something that wasn't there.

  55. Anymore wasn't binding them anymore and you want them to be

  56. free ultimately and we're going to cover some Concepts that will

  57. go into General law. But a lot of times he's talking

  58. about the law of Moses, the Old Testament, okay?

  59. So I'll remind us that one of the most helpful things when I

  60. was studying this as to re go through my outline to remind

  61. myself where we're going in chapter 1.

  62. When he started off by defending his apostleship the whole point

  63. of it writing this letter is because he had the authority

  64. from God, that gospel came from Divine Authority and his

  65. relationship to the apostles is the second section.

  66. We get into now his relationship with the apostles is important

  67. because he already showed us. He's he was independent from the

  68. apostles. Okay, the other bigwigs the

  69. other important Apostles. He's already showed himself.

  70. Hey I had my gospel A from them. I didn't have to have these guys

  71. approval but he's going to go on to affirm even though I didn't

  72. need that. Even though I didn't need their

  73. approval, he's gonna go through and show us how he did have

  74. their approval and so let's get into it.

  75. Clickers mean, crazy. Okay, verse 1 of chapter 2, he's

  76. already told us about his trajectory and his faith up to

  77. this point. Then he says, after 14 years.

  78. So, he was converted, he spent three years in Arabia, not even

  79. around any of the other apostles.

  80. Then he came back to finally, to Jerusalem after 14 years, I went

  81. up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and also took Titus

  82. with me. So he stresses this 14 years,

  83. basically. What he's saying is, if I only I

  84. went to Jerusalem the place where all the happening stuff

  85. was going on where all the these great men were?

  86. If I went twice in 14 years, do you really think I really needed

  87. their Authority? Or I was getting my gospel from

  88. them? It's like no, he's trying to

  89. make a point after 14 years. I went back and he's gonna

  90. outline the situation happened. When he did get back in amongst

  91. them, Sometimes getting a bunch of religious people together can

  92. create some problems. We're going to read about that.

  93. In this chapter. So I went up again to Jerusalem

  94. with Barnabas and also took Titus with me.

  95. Okay. I want to make a stop and make a

  96. point here, that kind of is built off of our last study, and

  97. this whole chapter is about something Paul had to fight

  98. against Paul was an apostle and he was immediately met with

  99. adversity and that's why he's still defending himself, he's

  100. trying to show them his legitimacy and I think I think

  101. this is an important Point. Hell's forces had an assignment

  102. again. It's Paul, they were trying to

  103. help us forces were trying to work against the church and

  104. there are many ways. The devil can do that.

  105. The devil is deceptive, he is conniving, he can work in

  106. relationships and become like that, that that water that's

  107. into it gets into a crack and freezes and thaws and expands

  108. that crack and makes things worse and worse.

  109. The devil was working in the church to try to split people

  110. apart. And Paul had to fight against

  111. this, and I think there's a lesson here.

  112. Hell's forces have an assignment against your life.

  113. If you are serving God, if you are in the thick of it, there's

  114. going to be challenges by nature of the fact that hell's forces

  115. don't want you to do that. And the reason is heaven has an

  116. assignment for you if you have an assignment from Heaven, hell

  117. is going to have an assignment against you.

  118. So may we not be surprised. May we take this in stride like

  119. Paul did Paul handle the situation.

  120. He kept going, we can admire Paul for his work here.

  121. Admits the the all these barriers effaced there's a he's

  122. he must have been thinking there's a whole world to preach

  123. the gospel. To why do I have to face so many

  124. barriers? He'll is forces have an

  125. assignment against his life and because and against our life,

  126. but that's because heaven has an assignment for us, okay?

  127. So, Paul has gone to down to Jerusalem and he's taking with

  128. him Barnabas and Titus. Now, we learn that both of these

  129. men were well respected among the leadership in Jerusalem.

  130. So, we're coming into this with two good guys Barnabas and

  131. Titus. We're going to talk more about

  132. Barnabas later because he gets involved in some in some

  133. problems. But tie, this is one of those.

  134. Who really holds firm in this process and becomes a beloved

  135. helper to Paul. Everything.

  136. Second Corinthians, we're told that he was like a brother to

  137. Paul, he was comforted by Titus. Paul was comforted by Titus.

  138. Paul trusted him to take a collection of money.

  139. So to take a collection of money and transported, that takes a

  140. lot of trust Titus. It says, another place had the

  141. heart of love for the lost like Paul did.

  142. So Titus, in many ways is a wonderful character.

  143. We just finished the letter to Titus.

  144. So that's one of the people. People who went with him and

  145. we're going to get back to Barnabas and a little bit verse

  146. 20. Paul says, and I went up by

  147. Revelation, so I didn't go there because Peter and them said,

  148. hey, Paul, get down here, we have some orders for, you know,

  149. he says, I went up by Revelation.

  150. I went up because God told me to buy direct order and

  151. communicated to them that gospel, which I preach among the

  152. Gentiles. So he went there and

  153. communicated, he was corroborating, the gospel that

  154. he is sharing with it. Gentiles remember the world at

  155. that time has two groups of people you're there Jew or

  156. Gentile if you're not a Jew, your agent.

  157. So he was preaching to people who are not Jews, he says, but

  158. he he went and talked to them privately to those were of

  159. reputation. So he went to talk to the people

  160. in Jerusalem. These these men of renown in

  161. Jerusalem privately first to those who are reputation

  162. reputation, lest by any means I might run or had run.

  163. In vain, I believe what he's basically saying here, as he

  164. comes into this Jerusalem situation.

  165. Okay. There's a lot of religious

  166. people in this area and he wanted to talk to the leaders.

  167. First to make sure there wasn't going to be any issues to make

  168. sure. Hey, here's what I'm preaching

  169. and I need to know if there's going to be any problems with

  170. that. I need to know if there's going

  171. to be any issues with you disagree with my gospel, he

  172. didn't want to be running in vain.

  173. He says yet, not even tied us, who is with me?

  174. Being a Greek or a gentile. He says, Titus was Gentile, he

  175. wasn't circumcised. And he was not compelled to be

  176. circumcised, so he comes into the situation and nobody

  177. convinced Titus to go back to the Old Testament.

  178. He's showing how those forces are already working, but Titus

  179. was not compelled to be circumcised.

  180. He says and this occurred. So he's going to say it's kind

  181. of gets a little bit confusing, the sentence structure here, but

  182. he's going to say, this whole situation occurred, this whole

  183. problem with people trying to pull them back to circumcision,

  184. trying to pull them back to the Old Law, this occurred because

  185. of false Brethren secretly brought in who came in by

  186. stealth to spy out, our Liberty, which we have in Christ Jesus

  187. that they might bring us. Into bondage there is that

  188. language. We talked about in the

  189. introduction later on in Galatians, he's going to

  190. emphasize, don't go back to that bondage.

  191. Don't go back to the requirements of the Old Law and

  192. and Stand Fast and Liberty. And there's people who came in

  193. to take them away from that. He's building a contrast here

  194. between Liberty and bondage. And the reason this is such

  195. bondage, the reason, the Old Testament was considered bondage

  196. to them. Is because the Old Testament

  197. didn't have a savior yet. They were tying people to

  198. something that had no rescuer. They were tying them to a

  199. sinking ship. If you tie someone to a ship

  200. that has a savior, that is gonna be saved, great, but they were

  201. being tied to an old law that wouldn't have a savior, the new

  202. law brought the Savior, and that's why it was freedom and

  203. liberty because they could be saved in it.

  204. And he says, to whom we did not yield submission even for an

  205. hour. So these people who came in, we

  206. didn't we didn't submit to them. We did not stand or accept this.

  207. This tragedy of of tearing down the gospel.

  208. We did not accept that we did not yield to that even for an

  209. hour. Why?

  210. So that the truth of the Gospel might continue with you now you

  211. could read this and say well it wasn't that big of a deal that

  212. these people stood up for the gospel because it would have

  213. been Reserved anyway, right. Like if Paul didn't stand up,

  214. the gospel still would have been preserved because God always has

  215. a way of getting his word out. That's true.

  216. That's, that is probably true. Even if Paul didn't stand up,

  217. someone would have, but it doesn't take away.

  218. The fact, that Paul, and his supporters here, preserve the

  219. truth of the Gospel. So that we could have it today.

  220. And the bottom line is if you don't do your job and God's

  221. kingdom, it will get done. And maybe you'll get done

  222. somewhere else. Maybe it's not going to flourish

  223. here. If I don't do my job, God's

  224. purposes are not going to stop. But that doesn't take away from

  225. the fact that if you are involved, you have a role and

  226. doing something extremely great beyond anything that you could

  227. ever think to accomplish in your Earthly life beyond anything

  228. else. Your work has long-term Eternal

  229. consequences just like Paul's did.

  230. Even though Paul was just a man. He helped preserved truth of the

  231. Gospel by how he stood up in faith.

  232. And preserving both the faith. And the people, the faith of the

  233. people around him because it's going to say that Paul would

  234. preserve the faith of the people around him because they would

  235. eventually change from their error.

  236. So he presumed help, preserve the faith, and their faith and

  237. we can learn from the example for our own action, verse 6.

  238. But from those who seem to be something whatever they were, it

  239. makes no difference to me, God shows no personal, favoritism to

  240. no man. For those who seem to be

  241. something out of nothing to me. So he's really, he's really

  242. tearing down these platforms and these pedestals that we put men

  243. on and in this situation specifically we're going to

  244. learn the people who seem to be something that was Peter.

  245. James maybe John, some of those people who seem to be these

  246. great people. He says, made no difference to

  247. me. There's people He says they had

  248. a nothing to me and I don't believe he's saying here that

  249. they were useless, or weren't a spiritual strength for him.

  250. I don't think that's what he's saying.

  251. I believe what he's saying is in the context, he's talking about

  252. how he's how his gospel was, was being taught truthfully on its

  253. own. He didn't have to have anybody

  254. else add to his gospel. Like, hey, Paul, your gospel is

  255. weak in this area, Peter, and I have to say that to him, They

  256. didn't have to add anything to his gospel, he didn't need that

  257. from them. Verse 7, but on the contrary.

  258. So not only did they not add to my gospel on the contrary when

  259. they saw that the gospel for the uncircumcised have been

  260. committed to me. As the gospel for the

  261. circumsized was to Peter for. He who worked effectively, who

  262. for he who worked effectively in Peter for the apostleship to the

  263. circumcised also worked effectively and me toward the

  264. Gentiles. And when James cephas and John,

  265. who seemed to be pillars perceived, the grace that have

  266. been given to me, they gave me and Barnabas the right hand of

  267. Fellowship that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the

  268. circumcised. Okay, let's back out.

  269. That's a a huge big sentence that has a lot information.

  270. So he starts out by saying when they saw that, that I was

  271. preaching, the gospel to the Gentiles, just as the gospel to

  272. the Jews was committed to Peter. So Peters job was to go to the

  273. Jews and Paul is primary job was to go to the Gentiles when they

  274. saw that knowing that God is working in both of us.

  275. That's what this paragraph here. That's in parentheses basically

  276. says knowing that the God. Who supported Peters apostleship

  277. also supported mine. Their response to that.

  278. They gave me and Barnabas the right hand of Fellowship, they

  279. saw that I was doing a good work basically and the right hand of

  280. Fellowship, basically, keep doing what you're doing.

  281. We're in agreement. We are on the same path.

  282. We are we are supportive of your work Paul.

  283. So again, this is further validating to the people who are

  284. detractors of Paul, it's validating.

  285. Hey, I didn't need the apostles but even they gave me their

  286. validation. They gave me the right hand of

  287. Fellowship. They said you're on the right

  288. track. You keep doing what you're

  289. doing. Yes, the affirmation the

  290. agreement. Now I think it's interesting a

  291. little side point. Why God chose Paul for one work

  292. and Peter for another. And I think the beautiful part

  293. is God, prepared them. For their work because their

  294. work needed them and they needed their work.

  295. God prepared. This work special for them

  296. because the work needed their these men's effort, but they

  297. also needed the work. And I look at Peter specifically

  298. in this in this this thought process.

  299. I look at Peter who went to the Jews.

  300. Now, it's interesting when you can consider Peters character

  301. Arc, Peter kind of went back and forth and it seems like he might

  302. have had trouble with people's view of him.

  303. For example, when Jesus was about to die, Peter said no, I'm

  304. gonna stand up for you and nothing's gonna happen to you.

  305. I'm gonna defend you. And and later he would give in

  306. when a little girl came to him and said, you're one of the

  307. Apostles and Peter, it was like the pressure of the crowd.

  308. I don't know what it exactly was but Peter gave in to that crowd

  309. pressure, especially from the Jews, it seems And we learned.

  310. We're going to learn later in this situation.

  311. How he's going to give in to the peer pressure of the Jews around

  312. him, and he's going to go back. So it's interesting that God

  313. sends Peter to the Jews. It's almost like he wants him to

  314. deal with that. He wants him to deal with the

  315. insecurity of going to his Jewish.

  316. Nationality people and saying, No this is right and I'm going

  317. to stand up for it, even though I want to pull back, maybe and

  318. go with the crowd, he had to deal with his own feelings in

  319. his own weaknesses and I believe the work was important for

  320. Peters growth because we're going to later.

  321. Learn that he would change. And he would become an elder in

  322. the church through all of his mistakes.

  323. But his work, his responsibilities pushed in

  324. there, and I want to encourage you to take on more

  325. responsibility in your own life and serving God because there

  326. are places your faith will never go in till you take on that

  327. responsibility. There Are Places.

  328. You can't push yourself until you step out of with the rules.

  329. You currently have or outside of the confined roles that you

  330. currently have of what you're willing to do for the Lord.

  331. And take on more for his cause, Peter was a great example of

  332. that. He was often failing but often

  333. growing when we read about in the Bible it's interesting here

  334. and I'm not sure if this was the intent of the author but I want

  335. to focus on this phrase for just a second, it said and when James

  336. cephas, which is Peter and John Who seemed to be pillars.

  337. Now, this phrase has an interesting connection because

  338. of the temple that stood at this time.

  339. Okay, the Jewish temple was this, elaborate ornate wonderful

  340. structure from the Old Testament and it had two pillars in front

  341. of it. There are named Boaz and I

  342. believe it's yanking or jaqen, however, it's pronounced and

  343. these pillars We're massive, they're beautiful, they're made

  344. of bronze or brass or something like that and they were they

  345. were some some people said 30 feet.

  346. I don't know exactly how tall they were.

  347. Some of the measurements were a little bit fuzzy but these were

  348. massive pillars. Temple was big.

  349. These pillars were at least 30 feet high and diameter.

  350. They were about six feet across. So this is a massive pillar

  351. standing in front of this beautiful ornate structure.

  352. But if you look at the top of these, there's no building it

  353. sitting on it. That's called a non load-bearing

  354. pillar in front of the temple. There were these two beautiful

  355. pillars. That weren't holding anything

  356. up. They were decorative And I'm not

  357. sure if this is the the in the thought that Paul had in writing

  358. this maybe he was comparing these men Peter and James two

  359. pillars that were looked beautiful, but we're really

  360. holding nothing up. But the point is true.

  361. Nonetheless he's going to dig into them for their weakness in

  362. their failures. I think it's interesting that he

  363. uses this terminology, they seemed to be pillars.

  364. Okay, so you have these men who gave, we already read this, who

  365. gave Paul and Barnabas the right hand of Fellowship, keep doing

  366. what you're doing verse 10. They desired only that, we

  367. should remember the poor. The very thing which I was also

  368. eager to do. Now, I believe this is

  369. specifically referring to the poor who are in Jerusalem.

  370. The poor Christians in Jerusalem.

  371. We later learn that. And we're in Romans 15 verse 25.

    Romans 15:25

  372. It says this Paul is saying but now I'm going to To go to

  373. Jerusalem to minister to the Saints for it.

  374. Please those for Macedonia and aquella to make a certain

  375. contribution to the poor among the saints who are in Jerusalem.

  376. So I believe when he's saying here that they all wanted to

  377. make sure they were taking care of the poor.

  378. I believe that was referring to the poor Christians in the city

  379. of Jerusalem specifically. Now, it doesn't mean that we

  380. don't have responsibilities to the poor in general.

  381. We are to be good too many people.

  382. Regardless of where they stand in religious circles, we would

  383. be good to the poor. But I believe this is

  384. specifically talking about the poor Christians in Jerusalem

  385. verse 11. Now, when Peter had come to

  386. Antioch, I withstood him to his face.

  387. So we're about to get into, we're transitioning now from

  388. Paul defending, his apostleship to a point where he is talking

  389. about arising conflict, there is a rising conflict building with

  390. Peter and Paul. Paul and Antioch, he withstood

  391. him to his face. That's very controversial

  392. language because he was to be blamed.

  393. Okay, why? Why was why was Peter to be

  394. blamed? It says for before certain men

  395. came from James, he would eat with the Gentiles so he was used

  396. to talk and have a good, you know, fraternizing with the

  397. Gentiles. He was all doing his thing.

  398. He had received the message with cornmeal.

  399. Alias that he was to accept the Gentiles.

  400. Now he was doing that, he was eating with the Gentiles but

  401. when they came when those people who are trying to pull people

  402. back to the Old Testament, came he withdrew and separated

  403. himself Peter felt that pressure.

  404. And he didn't, he wouldn't even the Gentiles because he was

  405. fearing those who were of the circumcision.

  406. Peter was the one who took a knife and slashed off the the

  407. servant of the high priest Mal kiss.

  408. This is the guy who's afraid of the Jews, the people of the

  409. circumcision. Why?

  410. Now, I want to set this scene, I just pulled this random picture

  411. of a potluck. They have these things in

  412. Jerusalem called their love feasts where they would all get

  413. together and have a meal together.

  414. And so I just wanted to put a context maybe for for the

  415. gravity of what's about to happen.

  416. You have a lot of people getting together eating together and

  417. Paul's going to come into this situation and he's going to kind

  418. of blow things up. It says, and the rest of the

  419. Jews, also played the hypocrite hypocrite with him.

  420. So the even Barnabas was Has carried away with their

  421. hypocrisy. This is the problem of when we

  422. don't stand up for what's right. And when we give into peer

  423. pressure's and Temptation, it wasn't just that Peter was

  424. unfaithful. It says the rest of the Jews

  425. followed his suit and played the hypocrite.

  426. The word hypocrite. Was someone who wore a mask?

  427. They were fake. Peter was being fake and the

  428. rest of the Jews also became fake.

  429. So that even Barnabas was carried away with their

  430. hypocrisy, Peter knew better and Acts chapter 11 verse 17.

    Acts 11:17

  431. We read it. We just talked about that

  432. situation where he was sent to the house of Cornelius and he

  433. had received this message from God.

  434. You know what, except the Gentiles arise kill and eat.

  435. It's not about the unclean animals of the Old Testament

  436. anymore. He was told to move on.

  437. And from there, he said to the other people, he said, if

  438. therefore, God gave them the same gift as he gave us the

  439. Gentiles. When we believed on the Lord,

  440. Jesus Christ, who was I that I could withstand Stand gone.

  441. And when those people heard these things they became silent

  442. and they glorified God saying. Thank God has also granted to

  443. the Gentiles repentance to life. He had already had the message

  444. he knew, better Peter knew better than to pull away and be

  445. Hypocrites against the people who are Gentiles Peter knew

  446. better. And I think the saddest part of

  447. all, this is even Barnabas was carried away.

  448. Barnabas we read about is an encourager.

  449. Barnabas was someone who would stand up for somebody when no

  450. one else would? Specifically with Paul.

  451. So this had to really hit home for Paul that Barnabas did this

  452. in Acts chapter 9 verse 26. It says and when Saul who was,

    Acts 9:26

  453. it was Paul same person had come to Jerusalem.

  454. So Paul's just been converted. He was previously, killing

  455. Christians, having Christians killed.

  456. So when he came to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples when

  457. he was converted, he tried to Come in with the rest of them

  458. but they were all afraid of him. And did not believe that he was

  459. a disciple. Can you imagine that what I felt

  460. to be the enemy and to try once you're converted to join?

  461. The enemy cabin, say I was wrong.

  462. I'm ready to support the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

  463. And everyone just to be afraid of you.

  464. What if everyone in this room looked at you sideways?

  465. We don't want anything to do with you.

  466. We don't really believe you're a true Christian, how that would

  467. hurt. But you know what with all those

  468. other people Barnabas Took him and brought him to the apostles.

  469. Barnabas took, this guy that everyone else rejected and

  470. encouraged him and said, hey, we got you your.

  471. All right, let's go, let's do some work.

  472. Barnabas stood up for him when everyone else was against him

  473. and how much it must have hurt Paul and hurt the people around

  474. him, that even Barnabas was influenced by this peer

  475. pressure. So that he wouldn't eat with the

  476. Jews that he would withdraw from them and be afraid of people who

  477. were Jewish, who were trying to pull them back to the Old Law.

  478. Even Barnabas was carried away. But when I saw that they were

  479. not straightforward about the truth of the Gospel, I said to

  480. Peter before them all. So before everyone who was there

  481. eating before everyone who is seeing this Paul stood up in

  482. front of everyone and said, if you being a Jew live in the

  483. manner of Gentiles and not as the Jews.

  484. Why do you compel the Gentiles to live as Jews?

  485. He says, you're not even living like a gentile.

  486. You eat bacon for breakfast. You're not following the Old

  487. Law. Why do you?

  488. If you don't live in the manner of the Jews, compel other people

  489. to live as Jews. He's calling me out for being a

  490. hypocrite in front of everybody, and this has to be a people

  491. Pleasers worst nightmare to be called out in front of everyone.

  492. May we be authentic and honest in our faith.

  493. Maybe we stand for, what's, right?

  494. And don't do it just because of certain people who are around

  495. all the time because we will be exposed one way or another lies,

  496. get exposed. This is Paul's or Peters worst

  497. nightmare. Now, I used to think that it

  498. kind of stopped there and then he went on to Justice Paul was

  499. writing about the situation, he's like right back to my

  500. original thought but no, Paul is still going off.

  501. This is still part of his speech in front of everyone.

  502. We who are Jews by nature and not Sinners of the Gentiles.

  503. So the world outside of the Jewish faith was considered to

  504. be generally sinful. They did not follow God, he says

  505. knowing that a man is not justified by The Works of the

  506. law. But by faith, in Jesus Christ,

  507. even we have believed in Christ Jesus that we might be justified

  508. by faith in Christ and not by The Works of the law for by The

  509. Works of the law. No flesh shall be justified.

  510. What's he saying? He's saying that, we know better

  511. than anybody. We can't do this perfectly.

  512. We tried to live our lives. Perfect in front of the Old

  513. Testament law and Paul really thought he was But it said that

  514. we know that a man is not justified by The Works of the

  515. law. There is nothing they could do

  516. Under the Old Law to save them self.

  517. They were only to be saved by faith in Christ Jesus.

  518. We know that as Jews. Even we have believed in Christ

  519. Jesus, that we might be justified and by faith in Christ

  520. and not by The Works of the law. This is all tied in with the Old

  521. Testament law. I believe we're going to talk

  522. more about General on a second but he's saying Well, you can't

  523. do it. You can't be justified.

  524. What is Justified me? And he means basically, to be to

  525. me made, right? It to be made Guiltless to me

  526. made innocent in a sense. So here is the world reality.

  527. The biblical reality is that everyone has sinned and fallen

  528. short of the glory of God Romans 3:23.

    Romans 3:23

  529. We are all confined, understand, we have all sinned.

  530. So, how are we going to be saved?

  531. How are we going to be justified to where our sins aren't counted

  532. against us and Eternity? It's not by the Old Testament

  533. law, it's by faith in Christ. We are going to be saved because

  534. of faith in Christ. Not because of an old law that

  535. we follow perfectly and are saving is not going to come

  536. through our own works, either. We're going to talk about that

  537. in just a second for by The Works of the law.

  538. No flesh shall be justified. This is true, both in Old

  539. Testament context and in any law context for example.

  540. If I were to go out driving down the street, I'm not going to

  541. drive, you know, 35 exactly on the speed limit, a cop's not

  542. going to pull me over and say congratulations, here's 50

  543. bucks. You follow the speed limit,

  544. that's not how the law works. Most law only punishes people

  545. who have done wrong, it's such a boundary and keeps you in the

  546. boundary. so law in general, Doesn't save you.

  547. You don't get something from law.

  548. Your only shown your weakness through law.

  549. You're only shown where you messed up the cup only pulls you

  550. over if you're doing something wrong.

  551. But specifically to the Old Law. The old laws purpose was not to

  552. justify people. The scripture says that by the

  553. Old Law, all are confined under sin, the Old Law shows us that

  554. we're all stuck in sin. It's like the walls close in

  555. around us and we have nowhere to go under sin.

  556. The law can find us all in that place where we had nowhere to

  557. run. Its purpose was not to justify

  558. us. Its purpose was not to free us

  559. and people really give the Old Law, bad rep, the Old Law was

  560. not evil. It just was not built to save

  561. you. It was built to be a tutor.

  562. It was built where told to lead us to Christ to show us that we

  563. need Christ. The Old Law was the problem.

  564. It was staying with the Old Law Without A Savior without the new

  565. law to fill its place. Now, it is also generally true

  566. that law does not save us and we are not saved by our works, but

  567. that's the beauty of the law of Liberty.

  568. We read about Christ's law and the Bible and the Plan of

  569. Salvation and life. We live as a law of freedom

  570. word. The Bible says, we're going to

  571. be slaves to something. You're going to be slaves to God

  572. or slaves to evil. So it's not that we don't have a

  573. law. It's just that Christ's law.

  574. When we follow it, fills with freedom.

  575. It is embedded with freedom. Now, do our work, save us.

  576. No, but true saving Faith justification by faith.

  577. It's not because we worked our we earned it.

  578. But part of Saving faith is full submission.

  579. Full action. Full Readiness to follow God's

  580. plan. Because it is the law of

  581. Liberty. Now, Clinton friends, if you've

  582. heard his lesson is actually, on our podcast, did a good outline

  583. explaining this from a legal context, he talked about how

  584. there's different ways in a court system where you can be

  585. justified or basically let go and determined to be free.

  586. The first one he mentioned was insufficient evidence.

  587. Okay. Maybe a court says you can go

  588. free because there's not enough evidence to convict you.

  589. We already learned from Romans 3:23.

    Romans 3:23

  590. We've all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

  591. We learned that the the eye of God is going to and fro on the

  592. earth seeing everything God is omniscient.

  593. He sees all he's omnipresent. So God sees us.

  594. There is no chance there is not a bit of chance.

  595. The God not see something that we've done.

  596. So there will be sufficient evidence to convict us maybe

  597. privilege of race position or family, you know, in times in

  598. history, in certain places by certain privilege, you could get

  599. off, because of, who you knew who you were.

  600. Maybe your family was. Not in this Kingdom.

  601. Our God is a just God. He doesn't let the innocent go

  602. or he doesn't let the guilty go and he doesn't condemn the

  603. innocent based on any kind of privilege, maybe gift or

  604. bribery, maybe you could give something to a judge and say

  605. judge, I got a family, fortune, give you a lot of money to get

  606. me out of this situation. Our God is a just got.

  607. The Bible says that he doesn't need anything from us.

  608. What are we going to give to God?

  609. That he does not already have he created it all.

  610. There's no gift or bribery we can give God, we cannot claim

  611. fourthly. Lee superiority.

  612. And anyway, we can't say, I'm more religious than other

  613. people. I'm superior to other people.

  614. I am doctrinally Superior to other people in, so I should be

  615. saved. I should be Guiltless and we

  616. cannot claim that I'm morally Superior to other people.

  617. Why? Because we've already sinned,

  618. and once you send, you are guilty of all the Bible says, So

  619. I can't claim to be let free or forgiven because I'm superior to

  620. anyone else in any way. That's just not how it works

  621. with God. And for us, I think that's

  622. important as a church. And as the Church of Christ We

  623. are not saved because of our own Works.

  624. We're not saved. Ultimately, because we do

  625. communion The Way, We believe the Bible says, We're saved by

  626. faith in Jesus Christ, and part of that is submission to what we

  627. believe, but we are not going to stand for God and, and put our

  628. good works out there as reasons why we should be saved finally,

  629. you might be able to say ignorance, I didn't know,

  630. because the Bible says, everyone has a natural law of the heart.

  631. Everyone knows has God in their hearts, and no one is Guiltless

  632. because we all have a responsibility that it comes

  633. from something God put within us.

  634. Us. We cannot claim ignorance and

  635. finally, we get to this issue of innocence and this is what we've

  636. been talking a lot about with the juice.

  637. Maybe they felt that they were innocent because they have been

  638. justified by the law, they kept the law perfectly, but we've

  639. already learned that you cannot be freed because you kept the

  640. law perfectly. Verse 17 but if while we seek to

  641. be justified by Christ, so Paul is still going on.

  642. This is part of his continued speech in front of everyone but

  643. if while we seek to be justified by Christ we ourselves are also

  644. found Sinners is Christ therefore a minister of sin so

  645. it is as Christ's true work and Christ effect in our lives is

  646. that his fault. If we are still Sinners,

  647. certainly not for. If I Build again, those things

  648. which I destroyed. I make myself a transgressor.

  649. If I build up against in it wasn't Christ, working me, that

  650. built that sin up, it was my own transgression going back to it,

  651. he said Verse 19 for I through the law died, to the law that I

  652. might live to God. I threw the law.

  653. So the law showed him, his weakness and showed his showed

  654. him. His inability to be saved on his

  655. own Works through that. He died to the law that law.

  656. He died to it because he was shown that he couldn't be

  657. perfected by it. He couldn't be made justified by

  658. it. So he died to it, why not?

  659. So we could just be left stranded, he died to it, so he

  660. could be living to God so that he might go to.

  661. The saving presence in the saving work of God and the

  662. Christ Liberty that I might live to God.

  663. How do you do this for? I have been crucified with

  664. Christ. It is no longer I who live, but

  665. Christ lives in me, I have been crucified with Christ.

  666. He's talking about his his own will, his own desires, his own

  667. life, what his control was? He said that's been killed and I

  668. saw the picture that help me get this in my Head.

  669. It's a submission. We let ourselves be crucified

  670. saying I'm not going to live this life for me anymore.

  671. I'm sacrificing what I want because I want Christ to live in

  672. me instead, so that I might live to God.

  673. That's how we are living with God because we are crucifying

  674. ourselves allowing that to happen to live to have Christ

  675. live within me. You know what the pressure is

  676. off. The pressure for me to figure

  677. out my own life and make all these decisions and figure out

  678. eternity and decide where my family is going to end up in

  679. eternity and provide for my child.

  680. All that pressure is off because Christ is the one living in me,

  681. Christ is the one giving me my direction and my hope and my

  682. purpose. And my life.

  683. My hope is in still. My direction is acquired and my

  684. plan is set because Christ lives in me.

  685. And the life which I now live. I still have to live a life

  686. here. I can't just skip straight from

  687. work, from here to the spiritual life, the life.

  688. I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God who

  689. loved me and gave himself for me.

  690. Paul saying this in front of everybody, can you imagine the

  691. silence in the room? Can you imagine the shock?

  692. When all this talk about law and stuff, was brought back to where

  693. that may needs to be The Son of God who loved me, the Son of God

  694. who gave himself for me, Paul puts me there twice because we

  695. need to put ourselves there twice.

  696. You were saved you were but you were justified by Christ and we

  697. need to have faith in him and that's where our Focus needs to

  698. be and the one who loved me and gave himself for me.

  699. So I Crucify My Flesh and give it back to Christ.

  700. I do not set aside the grace of God.

  701. Paul says For if righteousness, comes through the law.

  702. Then Christ died in vain. He says, I'm not going to just

  703. take God's grace, all that goodness, the things that I

  704. didn't deserve to get with it. I am rewarded with he said, I'm

  705. not gonna take all that the liberty and just set it aside.

  706. He says, because if I do that and say, okay, thank you for

  707. this nice gift box of Christ, and I'm going to set it here.

  708. I'm going to be a Jew. If I do that.

  709. Then Christ died in vain, if I say, thank you for that gift,

  710. but I'm going to live my Jewish life and be justified by my

  711. works of the law. Then there was no point in

  712. Christ died. Christ died for no reason.

  713. I can't imagine Peter in this situation.

  714. I wonder if he heard the rooster crow a fourth time.

  715. I wonder if all of this being brought back to the Son of God

  716. who died for him. I wonder if that what that

  717. brought to his mind the pain that you felt again when he

  718. realized I've rejected him again just in a different way.

  719. This brings us to the end of the chapter.

  720. So I just want to close with a couple points.

  721. I think it's I think it's awesome.

  722. That the Bible includes everything.

  723. We just read. If you were trying to start an

  724. organization, that is going to change the world, you would try

  725. to keep the roots very pure. That's where most religions try

  726. to do. They try to justify their

  727. founding fathers and they're the people who set the religions

  728. say, well, this person is great. They're Flawless, they're nice

  729. and everything was good. The Bible doesn't do that

  730. because that's not reality. The Bible says, three of these

  731. key members, they all messed up. The people who were with James,

  732. it says, the people who were with James, cause this problem.

  733. So James is at fault somehow, it seems here, the Peter, that one

  734. of the primary gospel preachers at the time he denied Christ,

  735. Bib. The biblical Integrity is

  736. fascinating to me, because it shows us a real reality shows us

  737. real religion, where it allows us to track people's full circle

  738. Peter, he denied Christ. And then on the day of

  739. Pentecost, he was the one. He was the one to deliver the

  740. message to the Lost. How about that?

  741. Okay, happily-ever-after, nope. He needs to then be adjusted and

  742. have to go to the house of Cornelius and learn about the

  743. Gentiles saving. Okay.

  744. Now he's good, right? Nope.

  745. We just read about a situation where Peter really messed up in

  746. front of everybody. This is honest, this is real

  747. life. But we later learned that Peter

  748. must be blameless. The Bible says that to be an

  749. elder in the church to be a pastor, you have to be

  750. blameless. It wasn't that he was perfect,

  751. obviously, clearly, but he had gotten his wrongs right to be an

  752. elder. He had right his wrongs, isn't

  753. that awesome? Praise God.

  754. That we are given examples of how to take things full circle

  755. to not. Look at our passing a man messed

  756. up. See you guys, I lost my chance.

  757. We're shown what some of the primary leaders really messing

  758. up? That is both encouraging to us

  759. and it's confidence-building. They weren't serving a fake

  760. religion and a fake God. The development, the

  761. developmental issues, because of this whole conflict in

  762. Jerusalem, you'd think that would have been massive, right?

  763. Like we're trying to start a church and now there's all this

  764. mess but God takes something beautiful and make something

  765. great out of it. Again, to remind us Health

  766. forces have an assignment against your life because heaven

  767. has an assignment for you, Paul stood up in front of all this

  768. from all in front of all these people.

  769. And the Bible says, people accused him or made fun of it,

  770. basically for being a week speaker.

  771. Maybe Peter was a Brawny, man. He was a fisherman.

  772. You got to pull Nets around all day.

  773. It wasn't just like casting reel.

  774. He stood up in front of may, be a tough guy and tough crowd.

  775. But Paul stood up and said something.

  776. And back to this idea that God brought all this full circle, we

  777. can trust that God. Used this awkward encounter and

  778. Antioch for everyone's good. It was good for Paul because

  779. Paul stayed true and proclaim the gospel.

  780. What a great opportunity, what a great confidence Builder, what a

  781. great Sometimes, your faith is made known to yourself by what

  782. you stand up for. It was good for Peter because

  783. Peter was corrected. And as a result became even more

  784. convinced in the truth than before, it was good for

  785. Barnabas. Because barmes, came to the

  786. correct belief on this matter. He would be changed later.

  787. It was good. For The Men Who Came From James

  788. has started the whole mess because a line was drawn at the

  789. true gospel and they had to decide sometimes people need to

  790. see that there's a line. You don't cross that it was good

  791. for the Jewish Believers in Antioch.

  792. They have the truth sped out clearly for them maybe these

  793. Jewish Believers remember they're they're just having a

  794. hard time believing the fact that these Gentiles can just

  795. walk in when we been here Garden Gate this whole time but they

  796. were shown the truth of the Gospel.

  797. It was good for the Gentile Believers in Antioch so it's

  798. good for the Jews but was also good for the Gentiles because

  799. their faith and Liberty in Christ was strengthened if you

  800. were a gentile and you saw somebody stand up against all

  801. this, Mickey think. Okay, I'm on the right path.

  802. I felt a little bit rejected before I felt a little bit like

  803. this is pointless before, but I'm strengthened knowing that I

  804. do have faith and I do have Liberty in Christ Jesus.

  805. And finally, it was good for us because as we learned before the

  806. true still lives today, God took something that was really,

  807. really not good for an early church and good came from it, in

  808. many ways. That's our lesson for today.

  809. In Galatians, Chapter 2. We're going to get further into

    Galatians 2 chapter mention

  810. this justification by faith going forward.

  811. So if you want to learn more about, why is it we've justified

  812. by faith and why can't we? Be justified by works.

  813. Chapter 3 is coming. Thank you for your kind

  814. attention this morning. If you've heard all this and

  815. you're like, you know what, I want to be a part of this

  816. wonderful plan. The Bible says that to believe

  817. something you have to hear it first.

  818. So maybe maybe if you've heard the gospel, this morning, that

  819. Jesus Christ died for us, that nothing we could do to save

  820. ourselves. That's the Son of God dies for

  821. us. Maybe you believe that this

  822. morning, you ready to change your life to repent and confess

  823. that Jesus Christ is Is the son of God.

  824. Unto salvation. You can start that process and

  825. you can be added to a church like our new brother Kenny was

  826. last week. Beautiful.

  827. Wonderful thing to see. You can do that today.

  828. It doesn't take some massive corporate meeting and all these

  829. things. It takes some water.

  830. There's water covering massive percentage of the earth.

  831. We happen to have some our convenience here.

  832. You can be baptized for the remission of your sins and added

  833. to that church. You could submit to be in that

  834. crucifixion with Christ through baptism through his death.

  835. We are joined with him in baptism and you can rise to walk

  836. in newness of life. If you need to get something off

  837. your chest, if you need to make something right with the

  838. Brethren here or maybe you just need the prayers of the church.

  839. We're happy as a family of gods, take care of that this morning

  840. to support one another. In any way we can serve you

  841. while we stand in seeing this, on an invitation, We thank you
