  1. Good morning. Everyone is a great day to be

  2. here together to worship. And I'm looking forward to our

  3. study this morning. We've already had a beautiful

  4. song service where we've been able to teach one another in

  5. Psalms and hymns and I hope together we can study a little

  6. more specifically on a set of passages here and the end of

  7. Galatians chapter 5 that we have to finish out the chapter after

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  8. what Chris taught on last time. And I've given the, you could

  9. give it any number of titles. I've titled this section keep in

  10. step. Up with the spirit.

  11. Hopefully we'll see what we mean by the time we get there toward

  12. the end. Of this of this chapter.

  13. So I like to continue to remind us of the theme.

  14. Verse of this book, Chris covered it last week, Galatians

    Galatians 5:1

  15. 5:1 Stand Fast, therefore in the Liberty by which Christ has made

  16. us free and do not be entangled again with the Yoke of bondage.

  17. And just to remind us of the outline where we've been and

  18. where we're going, we started out this whole letter with

  19. Paul's defense of his apostleship.

  20. He talked about how his gospel came from God.

  21. He had his gospel given From Jesus, and not for men, he

  22. talked about his relationship with the apostles.

  23. How Peter, and his early years as a Christian, his relationship

  24. with Peter and his early years as a Christian, we learned about

  25. the Jerusalem Council. And then what happened there

  26. with James cephas and John where they said, you're doing a great

  27. job, keep on going. So they approved of his

  28. ministry. We learned about how he had to

  29. rebuke Peter and how that's give us a springboard into this

  30. lesson on justification by faith.

  31. It's a big theme. Of the book of Galatians and

  32. it's going to permeate our study today.

  33. Even though if you study the versus just with a microscope,

  34. you might not see it. The study today is definitely an

  35. extension of this idea of justification by faith.

  36. We're going to cover today. The fruit of the spirit and this

  37. is in contrast to what many of them probably were thanking.

  38. What happened if you leave the Old Law?

  39. And you go on to this, justification by faith.

  40. Then what do you even do? Is it just going to be like,

  41. loose living or are you just gonna do whatever you want?

  42. And the the concept today, the key idea today is if you are

  43. walking in faith, if you're walking with God's spirit inside

  44. of you, you're not gonna that's not gonna be an issue.

  45. If God is working in you, it produces fruit.

  46. That is not, that is not sinful. That is not worldly.

  47. And they don't have to be worried about what might happen

  48. with their faith as they transition from the Old Law to

  49. the new and Paul defended that by giving five main arguments,

  50. the Personal argument, the scriptural, the Practical, the

  51. sentimental, and the symbolic argument.

  52. And then finally we're getting here to chapter 5 where Chris

  53. star us last week. Where we learned about this

  54. Liberty is a liberty that excludes the old laws teachings

  55. of circumcision and requiring that for salvation, it was a

  56. liberty that fulfills the Old Law Paul didn't come, like Jesus

  57. said, he didn't come to destroy the Old Law, he came to fulfill

  58. it. And we're going to jump into

  59. Liberty, which is one led by the spirit today and that's going to

  60. be our big Focus being led by the What that means.

  61. Okay, let's let's start with where Chris was last week to get

  62. a running. Start last week, we read Stand

  63. Fast therefore in the Liberty by which Christ has made us free

  64. and do not be entangled again with the Yoke of bondage.

  65. Indeed, I Paul say to you that if you become circumcised

  66. Christ, will profit, you. Nothing.

  67. Now remember, there was nothing wrong with being circumcised.

  68. The act itself is not wrong. Timothy was later circumsized as

  69. a way to get, It in with the Jews and have some Credence with

  70. the Jews and have a little bit of a rapport with them.

  71. So, it wasn't that act itself. He's going to tell us in a

  72. minute, what the problem was. And I testify again to every man

  73. who become circumcised that he is a debtor to keep the whole

  74. law. That's the key.

  75. Are they doing it to keep the law of Moses?

  76. He says, you have become estranged from Christ separated

  77. and a stranger from Christ. You who attempt to be justified

  78. by the law. That's the problem with

  79. circumcision. It was an attempt to be

  80. justified by their works specifically of the Old

  81. Testament. This is key.

  82. As I was studying this book and people's commentaries, they made

  83. it more confusing than it needed to be a lot of times.

  84. This law that he's mentioning over and over?

  85. Yes, we can. We can be wrong and that we can

  86. try to earn our salvation by just doing things all the time.

  87. But he specifically saying that you have, when you're trying to

  88. pull from the Old Law, you're falling from grace.

  89. These people, for we, through the spirit, eagerly wait for the

  90. hope of righteousness, through the spirit and hope of

  91. righteousness, by faith, not by what we can do for ourselves and

  92. Propel ourselves into Heaven by faith.

  93. For in Christ Jesus, there's our hope neither circumcision nor

  94. uncircumcision avails anything that's not important he says,

  95. but it's Faith working through love.

  96. This is a key verse to keep in mind as we study today, as you

  97. read, the book of Galatians, faith has an outpouring of the

  98. spirit of God has an outpouring from when within us as we as it

  99. works in us. That is going to work through

  100. love inside of us. He says you ran well who

  101. hindered you from obeying the truth.

  102. So this is interesting here as we're following this train of

  103. thought into the section. I'm going to cover.

  104. He's talking about, being them, being hindered, and the problem

  105. and then being hindered, is that they did not obey the truth.

  106. So there's a key connection between faith and obedience that

  107. he's tying here. It's not like you can say, oh,

  108. just have faith and that's all. That's what people just tried to

  109. hammer. When I was reading after

  110. commentators stuff A point. He says there's a link here

  111. between that your faith and obedience and Truth, this

  112. persuasion does not come from him.

  113. Who calls? You?

  114. A little leaven leavens, the whole lump.

  115. I have confidence in you in the Lord that you will have no other

  116. mind but he who troubles you shall bear his judgment, whoever

  117. he is. And I Brethren if I still preach

  118. circumcision, why do I still suffer persecution?

  119. Then the offense of the Cross has ceased.

  120. I could wish that those who trouble you and even cut

  121. themselves. Off.

  122. For you Brethren have been called to Liberty.

  123. Only do not use Liberty as an opportunity for the flesh.

  124. This is a crazy made a great point.

  125. Last week if we have the freedom in Christ and we try to use it

  126. selfishly, we're knocking on the fruit of the spirit, we're

  127. talking about later today. If we use Freedom as an

  128. opportunity for the flesh, that's a selfish ambition it's

  129. not going to get us anywhere but through love serve one another

  130. for all the law is fulfilled in one word.

  131. Even this you shall love your neighbor as yourself, but if you

  132. bite and devour one, another beware, lest you be consumed?

  133. One another. Okay, here's the verses.

  134. We have to consider together today.

  135. I say that after all, this has been said after all these

  136. defenses are made. After all these arguments, here

  137. is the bottom line, walk in the spirit and you shall not fulfill

  138. the lust of the flesh, okay? So he's saying to walk in the

  139. spirit, walking is a Biblical symbol often of action of taking

  140. some steps. There's a difference.

  141. When Jesus sitted seated at the Throne of God, we learned that

  142. he Has finished his work. He has completed his work, but

  143. we are told to stand up and to walk in the spirit, it takes

  144. effort on our part. It takes dedication our part,

  145. but it's not all about us. That's kind of the point of this

  146. whole train of thought. We started is, it's not about

  147. us, it's through the spirit in the spirit of God.

  148. We need to be proactive, some have said in the realm of sports

  149. that the best defense for our lives are in sports.

  150. The best defense is a good offense.

  151. Keeping keeping the other team off.

  152. The field is to have a good offense to be proactive.

  153. That's the, that's definitely true in this, in this context.

  154. And you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

  155. So if we want to keep the lust of the flesh, may be that

  156. they're concerned about that. As they leave the Old Law, maybe

  157. they're concerned about people, just do whatever they want.

  158. He says walk in the spirit and you're not going to have that

  159. problem. Now, it's as I studied this

  160. chapter, I started to get a little bit, maybe more Sympathy

  161. for the Jews, it would be a big world view change.

  162. If everything you lived by was ripped out from underneath you

  163. all the structure, all the things they knew to do.

  164. Hey this morning I have to have this prayer and, and do this

  165. sacrifice and do these things. And and these are my clothes.

  166. I wear today and this is how I do it.

  167. Nothing was governed. It was so much structure.

  168. You take that away from underneath them.

  169. They're probably like, what are you going to do?

  170. Are you just gonna go off and live wild and crazy?

  171. However, you want to live by the lust of your flesh?

  172. I mean, the structure was probably comforting to them at

  173. some point. We look at it, like, man.

  174. That's so much because we didn't grow up doing it.

  175. But with that structure, they probably felt so much safety in

  176. that. And he's saying as you make this

  177. transition, to the new law, the point of this is not just a wet,

  178. rip away your structure and your laws.

  179. The point is, you're still supposed to be walking in the

  180. spirit of God. And if you are truly walking in

  181. the spirit of God and his purposes and his plans, you're

  182. gonna be okay. For the flesh, lusts against the

  183. spirit, and the spirit against the Flesh.

  184. And these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do

  185. the things that you wish. This is kind of a little little

  186. what to expect as a Christian. Don't expect to just start our

  187. walk and just think everything's just going to be like, wow, I

  188. made a decision. Here we go.

  189. I'm just skipping through flowers.

  190. He said know, there's going to be a war.

  191. There is a war going on between what your flesh wants and what

  192. your spirit wants and in some ways, I believe that's a great

  193. opportunity for us. God gave us an opportunity to

  194. choose him over what we want in eternity.

  195. God's not gonna have to worry about.

  196. Are these people gonna gonna turn on me because we've already

  197. had our chance here on Earth to choose?

  198. Are we going to follow what we want?

  199. Or I'm going to follow? What God wants, what God teaches

  200. us and as us to be Both for our benefit and for his glory we've

  201. got this war going on inside of us and that's why sometimes we

  202. know what we really want out of ourselves out of life out of our

  203. faith. And that doesn't always happen

  204. and this is why But if you are led by the spirit, you are not

  205. under the law, okay? This law the law, we've been

  206. talking about the whole time, there's the Old Testament law.

  207. If we are led by the spirit, we're not under the law of

  208. Moses, we're not bound to those things, but we are led by the

  209. spirit of God. Another passage tells us that

  210. that the laws are for those who are unruly and disobedient for

  211. the people who need to be. Changed by the law, but the

  212. point is not just to be under a law.

  213. The point is to be led and by the spirit.

  214. Now he's also not saying that we're free from any law.

  215. I do not want to be free from the law of Christ.

  216. The law of Christ gives me freedom from sin from my own

  217. weaknesses. It frees me from the the rat

  218. wheel I get in of my own struggles.

  219. It gives me a way out of that. We're not subject to just any

  220. law. We are subject to willingly to

  221. the law of Christ. The perfect law of Liberty is

  222. called and another passage the law of freedom.

  223. First 19. Now the works or the Deeds of

  224. the flesh are evident which are adultery fornication.

  225. Uncleanness lewdness idolatry sorcery hatred contentions

  226. jealousies outbursts of Wrath selfish, Ambitions, dissensions

  227. heresies, envyings murders drunkenness, revelries.

  228. And the like I don't feel like I need to spend a whole lot of

  229. time on this section because he starts out by saying the Deeds

  230. of the flesh are obvious, you know, what they are, you know.

  231. What what it looks like when sin is present, you know what, it

  232. looks like when you want to do something wrong, and you have

  233. that conflict inside, what am I going to do about it and you

  234. choose wrong. We know what that is.

  235. That's not a secret. There are times sure.

  236. When they be something in here, we don't really know about.

  237. And we need to ask a question for clarification, but we

  238. usually know, we usually know when we're doing something wrong

  239. from when you see a child about to do something wrong, they have

  240. that look in their eye, you know, they even know at that

  241. age, when something is wrong and we understand these things are

  242. evident And he even says this is he in a full last?

  243. It's a full list, it's things like this to.

  244. This isn't the full list. But just to give a little, maybe

  245. a little Clarity here. He talks about fornication

  246. that's adultery and fornication. Those are illicit sexual

  247. activity. There's uncleanness, which would

  248. be any kind of moral uncleanness, maybe, especially

  249. lustful, or impurity. He talks about lewdness which is

  250. unrestricted lust, accessed draw drawing or creating I am pure

  251. sexual attention idolatry. Okay, that could be anything

  252. that comes before God anything That we would worship as an

  253. alternative God or put on the throne of our hearts sorcery.

  254. When I read sorcery, I thought that was interesting.

  255. A lot of times, you know, if you look at a lexicon real, give you

  256. a couple definitions. The first one that came out was

  257. the use of drugs poisoning or witchcraft.

  258. So I've always heard this sorcery discussed as as a type

  259. of Witchcraft, you know, trying to use ways of summoning

  260. spiritual powers. Etcetera.

  261. But I thought it interesting that it involves drugs there.

  262. Okay. The bottom line is we know all

  263. those things are not good for us.

  264. We know they are contrary to the spirit of God.

  265. We know they will work against us.

  266. So I don't feel a lot of pressure to give exact specifics

  267. on all this hatred. Hatred can exist internally and

  268. disposition of the heart or it can be externally and action or

  269. both hatred is anything that is against the problem is it puts

  270. us against the best interest of others, whether internally or

  271. externally, Jealousy is essentially a passion of the

  272. spirit missed used and it's usually directed at others

  273. because the passions of our spirit should be aligned toward

  274. the fruit of the spirit that we're going to learn.

  275. But when our passions are aligned maybe against others, or

  276. in one, see what others have that passion inside of us, that

  277. desire doesn't really get us anywhere.

  278. Outbursts of Wrath. Pretty self-explanatory.

  279. Selfish Ambitions, that's what Cole is talking about.

  280. Last week, a little bit, he's talking about having these goals

  281. and these aspirations. But what for why do I want to

  282. make money? Is it so I can get better and

  283. better better for myself, you know.

  284. And sometimes I hear people say, I just want to give my kids a

  285. better life than I have. Okay, that's fair but most of

  286. the time, the kids just want the parent, the kids just want the

  287. love. They want the time with their

  288. parent and I've heard people who are adults not spending time

  289. with their kids. They're saying that it's all

  290. because they're trying to develop a life for their kids.

  291. They never had I don't know, sometimes we can, we can tell

  292. ourselves, it's something that it's not, we do need to work

  293. hard and provide and not be lazy.

  294. But there's a point where it, which I think we're we can be

  295. easily guilty of trying to build our own Empire or our own barns.

  296. As Ecclesiastes says, I'm going to tear down my Barns and build

  297. new bigger barns to put the new stuff that I have now and those

  298. big barns The point is whatever we do, should be for the glory

  299. of God. If I make more money, maybe I

  300. can help other people more. Maybe I can support God's

  301. kingdom and God's purpose more. Or any other area of our life,

  302. dissensions heresies, envyings murders, drunkenness, revelries.

  303. And the like, I'm going to put the list side by side in a

  304. second to compare the two, the Fruit of the Spirit and the work

  305. of the flesh. But I think we get the idea of

  306. which I tell you beforehand. Just as I also told you in time

  307. past that those who practice, such things will not inherit the

  308. kingdom of God. Now, he didn't say that those

  309. who have made mistakes and who have moved on from it will not

  310. hurt the king of God. That's not what he's saying.

  311. He's saying those who make it a habit, those who practice such

  312. things. They will not inherit the

  313. kingdom of God and this is pretty logical, by the way.

  314. Like, why would anyone who wants to live this way?

  315. Want God in their life? God says, I can't be in the

  316. presence of evil. So if you want this over me, go

  317. ahead. Choose it.

  318. But those people aren't going to go to heaven because they prove

  319. they've told God they don't want him in their life on here on

  320. Earth. So why would they want to be

  321. with God in heaven? These people are not going to

  322. hear the kingdom of God and typically Well, I don't want to

  323. go into that, but the idea here, is, there are things that can

  324. separate us from God. In this list, will will prevent

  325. God's spirit from living inside of us.

  326. Okay. Now, here's the kind of the

  327. keynote of this chapter, but the fruit of the spirit is now, he's

  328. about to give a list of things that are wonderful, are

  329. beautiful, that are really talking to Tina the other day.

  330. She said, these are grounding principles.

  331. To help you reset and just point your your mind back where it

  332. needs to be when when you really need it, maybe at the end of the

  333. week or whatever you're going through.

  334. And so he's going to give us a list of things that are

  335. wonderful traits that God produces in us.

  336. But before we get into that, I want to talk a minute about the

  337. fruit and the spirit. So first of all, I want to

  338. acknowledge that, this is a blessing and it is an honor to

  339. Simply test the spirit in our lives, okay?

  340. We don't have to get into how the spirit does, what it does.

  341. I don't know all that. I do know though that the Bible

  342. teaches God's, holy spirit, inspired the word and the word

  343. teaches us and God's word lives in us.

  344. So however God's working in me, it can't be separate from the

  345. Bible, it can't be separate from what he teaches because that's

  346. how he's chosen to work throughout history through the

  347. spirit. So if I'm going to say well

  348. that's not good enough, I need some kind of experience.

  349. Well may, we never undermine the precious word that God has given

  350. us and that can live inside of us whatever we choose to.

  351. However, we choose to appreciate God's spirit working in us, we

  352. know it can't be separate from the word, okay?

  353. But I don't want that that position and the focus on the

  354. word being what works in to us, does it?

  355. At all or shouldn't diminish. How awesome it is, that God

  356. works in us, just because God, that's how God chooses to work

  357. in. Me, doesn't mean it's any less

  358. than, you know, some someone might say they had this giant

  359. experience where God filled them.

  360. Well, if God choose to work in me through his word, why should

  361. I look down on that? It is an honor to host the

  362. presence of God in our lives and then just letting us be a part

  363. of his family and living out his purposes here on Earth.

  364. That's enough for me if God has chosen to work in me that way.

  365. I don't ever want to downplay this important.

  366. So first of all, we need to know that God is working in us.

  367. God wants to work in you and we're going to read it a little

  368. bit. He has chosen you to work

  369. through you. He could have chosen any way to

  370. spread his gospel to make his plans happen, but he said he has

  371. sent preachers. How shall they be?

  372. How shall I go if they're not sent that scripture?

  373. We know God wants to work through us and it should be an

  374. honor. How does God work in us?

  375. And what does God produce in us as the?

  376. But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace.

  377. Long-suffering, kindness goodness, faithfulness,

  378. gentleness This and self-control notice he didn't say the fruits

  379. of the spirit and when I was reading after commentators, they

  380. made it important distinction and that it is a singular

  381. bouquet, you know? We don't choose one and say I'd

  382. like to be a long-suffering person or maybe the opposite.

  383. Maybe I want to be a kind person, but I don't need to be

  384. long suffering because I don't want to deal with that.

  385. That's not how this this list works.

  386. This list is what produces from within us when God.

  387. Is working inside of us. This isn't a checklist of things

  388. that I need to do to be a Christian.

  389. It's, if God's really working through you, if God is really

  390. inside of you, and as I'm making the transition from the old

  391. ball, this is important that he defends that God is working in

  392. them still. And these ways if God is working

  393. in you, this is what it's going to look like.

  394. God doesn't make lopsided Christians.

  395. Who are loving but not faithful. Or who are faithful.

  396. Will not love me. This is a picture of what God

  397. creates when he works in us. Now, before we get into each of

  398. those character traits, I've always found fruit fascinating

  399. and and I think if you look at a Vine if you look at a branch or

  400. if you look at a the ground you're tilling the fact that you

  401. can one day be outside and looking at this just bear plant.

  402. That, that really isn't like the Bible says toiling and spinning.

  403. It's not doing much. But then the next day you walk

  404. outside and then bam, you know, maybe maybe it takes a couple

  405. more days or but, but the bloom and the growth of that fruit is.

  406. It seems like it comes out of nowhere.

  407. I'm going to use the word magic flippantly but it, it seems like

  408. magic to me. It's just like it comes out of

  409. nowhere. How did this stationary Bland

  410. looking empty plant produce this more?

  411. Soul of goodness that you can just pluck off the vine sink,

  412. your teeth into and that's just wonderful fruit fascinates me.

  413. There's no, there's no one sitting there like kind of

  414. working on that plant all day long.

  415. God ordained fruit to grow from the ground from a seed to a

  416. plant that produces fruit. This looks fake to me.

  417. It's just fascinating that this comes out of the end of a branch

  418. and blows my mind. And I think that's just because

  419. God has a ordained or God taught the plant, how to do it, and

  420. it's God's work. I think that's interesting when

  421. we consider the Fruit of the Spirit, When we, when God's word

  422. is working at us. This fruit is produced inside of

  423. us. And this is what God has

  424. ordained to happen. When we are applying Godly

  425. principles to our life, God will create fruit seems like it came

  426. out of nowhere. Not because that plant was just

  427. incredible. And it was doing all this

  428. toiling and spinning and weaving and working.

  429. But because when God ordained something to happen, there was a

  430. work of God and that plant and in our, in our lives, when we

  431. have his Spirit living inside of us, he has ordained for things

  432. to happen that we could have never done on our own.

  433. The spirit of God works in us and amazing ways.

  434. Now, as I followed this analogy, there's plenty of analogies in

  435. the scripture for growing and in the process of God working in us

  436. and the growing process and the ground gsu's.

  437. Has a lot of Parables and analogies with growth.

  438. And as I thought, about what we see in this process, I don't

  439. want to make this study about our effort because it's not,

  440. it's about what God does through us.

  441. But oftentimes what, you know, when I was working in the garden

  442. with my dad, this is the kind of thing that I see.

  443. As a, the person trying to grow things.

  444. You're pulling weeds. You're shoveling your, maybe

  445. your hoeing a lot. Maybe your school, Ruben cow

  446. poop. You're scooping manure and

  447. mixing it up in there. It's not a glamorous thing.

  448. The farmer or the tiller of the soil, does not have a glamorous

  449. work. The magic you might say is in

  450. the plant, it's in the god ordained creation.

  451. What God does in that plant. Maybe maybe the most glamorous

  452. thing you do is you water that plant daily but this is a

  453. picture of somebody that's growing fruit or growing things

  454. and as I consider that you know this is this my dad's Garden.

  455. So the most we ever did was we got this this whole Garden area.

  456. Looking good. We got it looking good for dirt

  457. standards, I guess there wasn't a lot of problems in the way and

  458. maybe you you made some trenches that were just right for the

  459. plant. But that's pretty much if you

  460. are the person doing the work and planting, this is what you

  461. see. It's not glamorous.

  462. I think that's a perfect connection between God's fruit

  463. of the spirit in us because it's not about how great we can do

  464. things. It's about us doing the the weed

  465. pulling, and it's us doing the menial things.

  466. That might sound seem frustrating and tiring.

  467. Maybe you find joy in that process.

  468. That's great. But it's not a Burris work.

  469. The same is true with the life of a Christian these things when

  470. they're producing, you look wonderful but while you're doing

  471. the work the effort and putting your life into it and pouring

  472. out yourself. It doesn't look glamorous It

  473. doesn't feel glamorous all the time.

  474. But it will produce fruit that is beyond anything we could

  475. ever. Imagine I'm just doing x, y z

  476. and you know, that's what a lot of times people who are doing

  477. good. They just said, well, I was

  478. obviously doing XYZ, it wasn't that big of a deal, but it made

  479. a big difference to the people around them, who got to either

  480. be the fruit themselves. Experience.

  481. The fruit, appreciate the fruit that they produced, It might not

  482. always look glamorous but it's worthwhile and this is the idea

  483. carried in First Corinthians chapter 3 that that it's not

    1 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  484. about us. It's not about the our work in

  485. the ground. It's about God, producing

  486. through these simple acts that we do.

  487. He said what? Then is a policies, what would

  488. then is Paul who are we or just servants through whom you

  489. believe? I believe does the Lord assigned

  490. each? I plant it Planting you take the

  491. plant and put it in the ground. It's not a complicated process

  492. Apollo's watered. Watering take the water and you

  493. put it on it, consistently maybe, but it's not complicated.

  494. It's not elaborate, but God gave the growth.

  495. So neither, he who plants, nor he who Waters is anything but

  496. only God who gives the growth? May we have the attitude that if

  497. we're going to be the fruits that we're going to talk about

  498. in just a second, we're gonna be the long-suffering and goodness

  499. we have to have this mentality that I'm gonna do that.

  500. Whatever is asked of me, I'm going to submit to that simple

  501. role because of what God can produce through it.

  502. I think there's a wonderful parallel in John 15.

  503. This, this is a fascinating kind of speech.

  504. Jesus gives toward the end of his life.

  505. Jesus says, I am the True Vine and my father is the

  506. vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not

  507. bear fruit. He takes away, so we're supposed

  508. to be bearing fruit. Okay.

  509. And every branch that bears fruit, he prunes so, even if

  510. you're doing God's Will and your You're producing fruit, God's

  511. going to prune us and shape us and mold us maybe in some ways

  512. that require cutting and trimming.

  513. Are we ready this week to be pruned?

  514. Are we ready to be trimmed and changed even when it might clip

  515. us and hurt us. Why that it that that vine May

  516. bear more fruit or that bridge May bear more fruit.

  517. You are already clean because of the word, which I have spoken to

  518. you abide in me. And I, in you as the branch

  519. cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine.

  520. So, neither can you unless you abide in me?

  521. So, if you need a picture, the vine, if you see a big row,

  522. there's a lot of grapes here in Bakersfield.

  523. You see that that row that structure that set up for the

  524. vine to grow across. You get a thicker Vine coming

  525. through and then off of that vine you You have to have a

  526. branch come out that will then spring out fruit.

  527. The fruit doesn't grow directly from the vine, not to it's

  528. interesting. God has ordained a process where

  529. it needs branches to grow the fruit and in the church in our

  530. lives, Jesus doesn't just shoot fruit out of himself.

  531. He wants to work it through us. He wants to work fruit through

  532. you. And if it's not you, then who's

  533. it going to be? God wants you to be one of these

  534. branches out here. And if you look at invite it

  535. could be amazing. How much that one little Branch

  536. can hold how much fruit can come off of one little branch.

  537. I'm the vine Jew says, you are the branches.

  538. He who abides in me and I in him Bears, much fruit.

  539. That's how it's going to be. He says, if you live, if you

  540. stay in me, And I work through you, you will bear much fruit

  541. for without me. You can do nothing.

  542. I am an extension of Jesus himself.

  543. I'm extension of Jesus himself. If you abide in me and my words

  544. abide in you. So here we go again with the

  545. holy spirit that how the spirit might work, we know it can't be

  546. without the words. If my words abide in you you

  547. will ask what you desire and it shall be done for you by this.

  548. My father is glorified that you bear much fruit.

  549. So you will be my disciples. These things I have spoken to

  550. you. That my joy May remain in you

  551. and that your joy may be full. He spoken all these things about

  552. how he wants to work in us and have fruit in us and us be

  553. filled with his word. And that's going to in turn.

  554. Be what helps give us joy in our life.

  555. What helps? Keep us full in our life and

  556. filled up is by serving and filling with God, and his ways

  557. and his fruit. This is my commandment that you

  558. love one. Another, as I have loved, you

  559. greater love has no one than this, than to lay down, one's

  560. life for his friends, you are my friends.

  561. If you do whatever I command you, I think it's interesting.

  562. I've always read this, like, yeah, Jesus is the one who laid

  563. down his life for us his friends, but I think in that

  564. there's a there's a call to lay down our life to be his friend

  565. to lay down our life for him. Another reference in the Bible.

  566. There's the concept is fruit, is referenced throughout the

  567. scriptures. In Matthew 3, verse 8, Jesus

    Matthew 3:8

  568. says, to produce fruit in keeping with repentance.

  569. So fruit is basically what comes out from the inside.

  570. Hebrews 13 verse 15, therefore by him.

    Hebrews 13:15

  571. Let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God.

  572. That is the fruit of our lips giving, thanks to his name.

  573. There's another passage, I didn't include here.

  574. Where basically the giving was a Fruit of the disciple or you

  575. have God's followers of the disciples that when we give back

  576. to God. That is a fruit of our faith

  577. fruit is simply what comes from within and the fruit of God's

  578. work Works in us know so remembering what fruit is fruit

  579. is a product that comes from within our role in it as we have

  580. to be submissive, we have to be in the vine and let the vine

  581. live in us to have fruit to Fruit, but where it truly comes

  582. from is from God. And this is in contrast to the

  583. Old Testament law. They were trying to hold on to

  584. that law that they wanted to make the fruit themselves, but

  585. God gives the increase. God is the one who brings fruit,

  586. when he works inside of us, not the other way around.

  587. The fruit of the spirit is love. First of all, that word.

  588. Love comes from the word Agape. Not store G and the Greek, there

  589. is a bunch of words for love, not storage you, which is

  590. Affection, maybe something. You had for your family, not

  591. arrows, which was a passionate, love, not philia, which was a

  592. friendship and a mutual, maybe respect.

  593. It's not that Agape was unconditional and Selfless Love.

  594. And I've heard that a million times but I needed to hear it

  595. again this week. Maybe sometimes.

  596. Maybe sometimes we get too caught up in needing to feel a

  597. connection with somebody to do something for them.

  598. Instead of just showing that Selfless Love to one another and

  599. whatever comes from it will come, maybe we will have more

  600. affection for them but God requires a Selfless Love.

  601. That's what God's spirit produces in knee.

  602. If it is really working in me. Next is Joy.

  603. The fruit of the spirit is joy, joy in the true.

  604. Good stuff of life. Not in this sinful Pleasures

  605. that are here today. Gone tomorrow not in the things

  606. that will really tarnish our lives.

  607. In the end in the good stuff, in the things that are pure and

  608. lovely and admirable. The Bible says in all those

  609. things, we will have true Joy. In the right stuff and art, art

  610. enjoyment has to be shifted. All of these character traits.

  611. Take time, it's not just going to happen over time.

  612. In one day that you just have joy and all these things that

  613. God has for us. It's, we're gonna have joy both

  614. on the inside, I believe, and it will come out on the inside on

  615. the outside, we're going to have joy for others, as a

  616. selflessness, as part of what our interests are turning to the

  617. needs of others and having joy for them.

  618. And having Joy with others, the Bible teaches us that we should

  619. mourn with those who mourn and and have joy with those and

  620. rejoice. With those who Rejoice ink will

  621. learn to have joy with others and for And we're going to have

  622. that spiritual reality that teaches us joy, no matter what

  623. our circumstances are, because we have our spiritual life,

  624. right? John 15, verse 11 or remind you

    John 15:11

  625. that. He said these things, I have

  626. spoken to you. That my joy May remain in you

  627. and your joy may be full. Next is peace, I believe will

  628. have peace with God, knowing that we are right with him that

  629. we are not perfect, but we're doing our best and we are going

  630. to keep just starting again. Each day, we're going to start

  631. over today. I'm going to try and use the

  632. right terminology. I'm going to submit my life to

  633. him today and I'm going to follow him.

  634. And I have peace with God because of that knowing that I'm

  635. not living in contrary to him I'm going to have peace with

  636. others. I'm not going to have conflicts

  637. in. Wars that we learned about in

  638. the, the Deeds of the flesh. I'm gonna have peace ultimately

  639. to with self because of all that and this takes time, it's not

  640. all. Just like it happens.

  641. One day. This is what God's fruit grows.

  642. Are God's. Spirit grows within us.

  643. The next is long-suffering, I did hours and hours of study on

  644. this word it comes from too. Complicated Greek words, long

  645. and suffering. we gotta be ready for that, like, we talked about,

  646. tilling the ground, We need to be ready for that and expect it.

  647. Kindness and goodness. Now, I put these two here

  648. together because and commentators were discussing

  649. then, there are saying, well, it's kind of hard to distinguish

  650. the two, but one of them said, maybe just maybe kindness is

  651. more of a disposition of the heart and goodness is maybe the

  652. action side of it. I don't know.

  653. It makes sense to me though, that maybe some people have an

  654. easier time, having a kind disposition.

  655. But maybe they need to work on showing goodness and actually

  656. coming through and showing goodness and being active.

  657. Other people may have an easier time showing goodness through

  658. action, but maybe their disposition is in this kind, I

  659. don't know, maybe we all have a specific need there.

  660. That can be that the spirit works on through Us in different

  661. ways faithfulness. Through all the changes that

  662. life brings in all the things that change you know, some

  663. people say more things change in life that stay the same

  664. faithfulness is important. And as a I'm understanding more

  665. and more the importance of this because it's one thing to have

  666. all all your effort poured into one day.

  667. But then what about tomorrow? We've got to be faithful and

  668. consistent in our effort and then our And who we are and what

  669. God is doing in US gentleness. I never saw a herd a more

  670. perfect definition of gentleness and strength control.

  671. Gentle, this is not weakness, we would describe a mother

  672. alligator carrying her baby's, not his week because she's

  673. carrying her babies. We would describe her as gentle

  674. because she has the strength to carry them and yet she doesn't

  675. crush them and kill them. She's gentle.

  676. And don't ever let anyone tell you that you are weak.

  677. If you don't stand up for yourself, whatever that means in

  678. different context, but if you're a kind to people and you don't

  679. lash out, you don't have outbursts of Wrath as stated in

  680. the Deeds of the Flesh and self-control.

  681. That's the last fruit of the spirit pretty self-explanatory.

  682. I felt a lot of pressure trying to prepare this to find just the

  683. right way to say. I love it but I think the

  684. perfect part of this is it's not about What I would say it's

  685. about God's spirit working in you, I'm not going to be able to

  686. say anything that's really going to make all this.

  687. Just click if God's really working in my life, this will

  688. happen if God's really working in your life.

  689. This will happen. Against such, there is no law.

  690. Okay, I think this is where it ties.

  691. In the context, he's talking about the old loss, which he's

  692. saying there's no law. There's no Old Testament that

  693. would prevent you from being this right then?

  694. Why are you rebelling, instant, why are you going back to the

  695. Old Law? Everything I just said is

  696. goodness that no Old Testament or new testament or law out in

  697. the world or governing body would ever say anything against

  698. these wonderful traits, there is no law against these things.

  699. And so one of the best things that that helped me this week is

  700. these passages were working on me.

  701. Is I noticed as I looked at any one of these let's say

  702. jealousies okay. If I look at jealousy, These

  703. can't coexist. It's like oil and water.

  704. If I have jealousy in my heart, I'm not going to be a piece.

  705. I will never be at peace until because there's always something

  706. else that someone has that I might want or want to become or

  707. someone else is better at than the person.

  708. I thought I wanted it from. I'm never gonna have peace.

  709. I'm never gonna be able to love them because I'm concerned about

  710. what they have or what. What am I get?

  711. I'm not going to have joy because Joy doesn't come from

  712. achieving things or getting things.

  713. I'm not going to be long suffering because I'm going to

  714. be frustrated all the time. I'm not going to be kind to my

  715. disposition or my actions. I'm not going to be faithful

  716. because I'm always working about getting something for me.

  717. I'm not going to have self-control or gentleness

  718. because you'll live a frustrated life.

  719. If you're jealous If I'm selfish and if I've selfish Ambitions,

  720. how can I possibly be faithful to things that matter if I'm

  721. seeking my own? If I am committing adultery or

  722. fornication? How can I possibly love the

  723. person that I'm sending with or the person who I should be

  724. faithful to? How could I have joy in any of

  725. my relationships? If I'm unfaithful and always

  726. looking turning around, trying to protect my secrets?

  727. How could I ever have peace with might with others with God or

  728. myself? How could Hi be suffering along

  729. with those that I have a bond with.

  730. If I'm unfaithful in a relationship, I'm not going to

  731. be stick to it. I'm going to lash out if I'm not

  732. faithful. You can go through all of these,

  733. you could say, if I'm long-suffering.

  734. I'm not going to turn to other places for my Pleasures.

  735. I'm going to rely on what God has given me and have

  736. faithfulness in my heart for that.

  737. And gratitude, I'm not going to seek for pleasure other places.

  738. I'm going to be faithful to God and not to other Idols.

  739. I'm not going to seek for power anywhere else.

  740. I'm not going to hate others because I'm willing to suffer in

  741. myself rather than to have a hatred for somebody else.

  742. I'm not going to be contentious or jealous because it's not

  743. about me. I'm not going to burst out

  744. because I'm taking the mental disposition and I'm setting my

  745. feet in the ground that I'm going to stick through the

  746. suffering and not expect to have things easy.

  747. And go on and on these two can't exist and I encourage you to

  748. find something. Maybe you struggle with on this

  749. list. It was very helpful for me and

  750. replace it. With these difficult but

  751. wonderful Concepts. Not because you need to try so

  752. hard to make it happen. But going to see in just a

  753. minute because this is a syndrome, you can have when you

  754. read this list. Oh no, I can't do all that on

  755. the worst. I'll never become all that.

  756. And today I have to do everything where I do.

  757. I even start, I can't go back and fix everything.

  758. I'm overwhelmed. A lot of times people read a

  759. list like that and that's how they feel.

  760. Pause. It's not the point.

  761. This is a positive reset. Take from this.

  762. I have a vision of what I want to be.

  763. Number two, the best is ahead. That's the Hope in all of this

  764. is that I can have more joy than I ever thought I can have love

  765. and peace in my life that I are thought.

  766. Because maybe there's things in your I haven't uncovered yet.

  767. That tells me the best is ahead and that I can look forward to

  768. my life, becoming better and more refined.

  769. And number and this one here guys, it's God's spirit in me.

  770. I don't have to have this reaction when it's God's spirit

  771. working in me that's going to be the theme.

  772. There's a passage. It says, do not quench the

  773. spirit. Instead of Welcome him in.

  774. And John 14, verse 22. Judah said to him, Lord, how is

    John 14:22

  775. it that you will manifest yourself yourself to us and not

  776. to the world? Jesus answered and said to him,

  777. if anyone loves me, he will keep my word.

  778. And my father will love him, and we will come to him and make our

  779. home with him. Welcome, Jesus, in, there's

  780. moments every day where you where you look and you're like,

  781. I know I'm making about to make a decision that's kind of a good

  782. or bad or helpful or negative. Don't quench the spirit when

  783. God's spirit is teaching our heart and making our conscience

  784. aware. Don't quench that allow God's

  785. word to work in US. And welcome him.

  786. Welcoming him in, will help make all these things grow out out

  787. from us. One of the key takeaways is

  788. moments make this happen being intentional with preparation and

  789. went to regroup if we're going to make this these kind of

  790. changes in our life if we're going to start with God at the

  791. focus and let God work within us and welcomed him and I think it

  792. starts the start of our day to start with purpose and goals.

  793. What is my purpose here today? And what are my goals today?

  794. What do I want to be one of my setting?

  795. My heart toward inmates to, it may involve taking Taking time

  796. to pause, there may be times where you have to regroup and

  797. baseball. You call a timeout, the coach

  798. comes out not because he has a lot of discussion to make, but

  799. he wants to do what's called, stop the bleeding.

  800. Okay? Let's just talk, our coach

  801. usually came out said a joke, caught us, all reset.

  802. Okay. Now let's proceed.

  803. Maybe for us that comes back to refocusing on our goals.

  804. Okay, what-what am I what was my goal today?

  805. I started with. Am I doing that?

  806. Okay, let's reset. So take time.

  807. To pause and refocus. Jesus often went alone to pray

  808. and at the end of our day, may be time to reflect evaluate.

  809. How do I do today and then move on It doesn't happen in a moment

  810. but moments, make it moments, make this Who You Are.

  811. Moments make this who you are, but it's not going to happen in

  812. a moment for the good or for the bad.

  813. You're not going to become all these things in a moment and

  814. you're not going to lose all this character in a moment.

  815. We need to be filled with the spirit of God.

  816. Paul said, I do not account myself to have apprehended.

  817. I always thought that was like reprimanded.

  818. I don't know what I thought that word meant, but the word

  819. apprehended, I'd learn Spanish, which is I put in there is to

  820. learn. Paul said, I did it.

  821. I don't kill myself to have already learned.

  822. I'm learning this in the process.

  823. This becoming more and more perfected by God.

  824. But one thing I do forgetting those things which are behind

  825. and reaching forward to those things, which are ahead.

  826. I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call and

  827. Christ Jesus have it. Learned it yet.

  828. I'm just going to keep on trying starting new day.

  829. Purpose and goals. Refocus recommit evaluate

  830. myself. Finally closing out this chapter

  831. and those who belong to Christ have crucified, the flesh with

  832. its passions and desires. Now, that doesn't mean that

  833. there's no longer flesh inside of us.

  834. It's a commitment, I've crucified, the flesh.

  835. Meaning, I've made a commitment to walk away from that.

  836. I may make mistakes, but my commitment May stand, I have a

  837. commitment to crucify the flesh. Verse 25.

  838. I'm reading from the ESV. Now, if we live by the spirit,

  839. let us also keep in step with the spirit.

  840. This translation says, And this this gives a connotation of, of,

  841. like a runner or maybe if you're walking, if you're doing speed

  842. walking, whatever your gig is, if you're keeping in step with

  843. someone, that's for Pace. And I think that's a wonderful

  844. picture that we're not going to the Holy.

  845. See, the spirit isn't going to teach us and say, oh, I'm all

  846. the way up here. You're nowhere.

  847. Close the Spirit guides us. We keep step with what we can

  848. see. We need to do today.

  849. We keep step with. Okay, what do I see today is an

  850. area, I should be better or an opportunity to be better and you

  851. keep in step with that and the spirit will work on the word

  852. will work on our lives and teach us.

  853. Along the way, keep in step, with what we're being.

  854. What is being asked of us what our conscience is.

  855. Convicting us up today and where we can be better today.

  856. And if you've ever been done, much running Runners really rely

  857. on, somebody else to help them set their Pace.

  858. When I was in high school, it was Spencer Hagar.

  859. He was really the only one who can set a pace for me.

  860. He and our baseball conditioning, he was the fastest

  861. guy, he was the longest legs and he could really run every race.

  862. I was just staring at his feet trying to keep up with them

  863. every time we ran our mile or two mile.

  864. I was staring at his feet trying to track stride for stride with

  865. him. That's the concept track stride

  866. for stride. Stay focused on what the on what

  867. the word teaches us and what we need to be focused on, and

  868. that's a wonderful concept. If you run a long Marathon, they

  869. have designated pacemakers Who come out and run, maybe a mile

  870. with you to set your pace. Say, hey, so, and so you come

  871. out here and Run Run MI 15 with me, just to make sure my pace is

  872. on track because Slowly start to just kind of lollygag if there's

  873. not somebody they're setting my pace.

  874. So maybe I call a Sal Chris and Terry and said hey you guys are

  875. my mile Pace Setters for this Marathon going to run and they

  876. would go out there. They'd meet me and I would track

  877. my Pace with them. I thought this picture was I

  878. just happen to run across this was even better than I kind of

  879. imagine it. There's the paralympic races and

  880. they have a Pacesetter. that is tied to them, literally And this

  881. Pacesetter guides them, they help them keep up their speed

  882. but they also keep them on track.

  883. This guy on the right is the pace Setter and the guide for

  884. the paralympic runner and I thought that was a perfect

  885. picture of our Christian Life. Sometimes we are blind.

  886. Sometimes we cannot see where we're going, sometimes.

  887. We don't know where we need to be.

  888. But God's word, the spirit of God can live in us and direct us

  889. and we can keep Pace with that with what he's asking of us

  890. today. If we live in the spirit, let us

  891. also keep in step with the spirit.

  892. Let us not become conceited provoking one, another envying,

  893. one, another And that is the end of the chapter.

  894. And finally, a call to action. Jesus said in John 15, no longer

  895. do I call you servants. For a servant, does not know

  896. what his master is doing, but I have called you friends for all

  897. things that I heard from my father.

  898. I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I

  899. chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit.

  900. And that you, your fruit should remain.

  901. I'll stop there. I think that's enough.

  902. God has called us to bear fruit, God has called us to action.

  903. Got us called us and appointed us, for a, for a life that is

  904. better than we can ever. Imagine.

  905. When his Spirit truly works in us, they didn't have to be

  906. afraid in the old test going from the Old Testament, because

  907. it was still God working in them.

  908. Just maybe not in a way, they had imagined.

  909. If you have not started this walk and become filled with the

  910. spirit through what God teaches you can start today.

  911. You can be added to, by of Christ.

  912. When you believe, when you repent, is, I'm going to turn

  913. and crucify the Flesh and commit my life and repent of our past

  914. life confess that Jesus Christ. Is the Son of God, the source of

  915. our saving grace, and the source of our salvation, and be

  916. baptized to be contacted with the blood of Christ to be joined

  917. to him and walk a life of faith. And if you've already done that

  918. but you have may be straight or you want to get back on the

  919. right track. We're here as a family to
