  1. The focus of our study this morning is about what it means

  2. for us to be Christians. And here today we are gathered

  3. as Christians, and I think a lot of the time we can take what

  4. that means for granted. If you've ever been asked what

  5. church do you go to? What denomination are you a part

  6. of? XYZ questions of that nature.

  7. Then this is a study that hopefully is helpful in helping

  8. us to answer those questions. So there are three main

  9. questions that we're going to answer that are going to be the

  10. structure for our study. First of all, what about the

  11. name? Where do we get the name

  12. Christian from? Secondly, different pasts to the

  13. same place. Is that valid?

  14. We'll get a little bit more into that.

  15. I won't explain what that means right now, but and then thirdly,

  16. we'll ask united by what? What should we expect

  17. Christchurch to be united by? What are we and all other

  18. Christians in the world united by?

  19. So first of all, what about the name?

  20. The name Christian is not one that we came up with.

  21. It's actually used three times in the Bible.

  22. And what this means to me is that the Holy Spirit inspired

  23. these men of faith to write this down, to write this name down.

  24. Meaning that we have a scriptural basis for continuing

  25. to use this, use this name. We have a scriptural basis for

  26. calling ourselves Christians. In Acts Chapter 11 in the

    Acts 11 chapter mention

  27. second-half of verse 26, we find it used for the first time.

  28. Says there, and the disciples were first called Christians in

  29. Antioch. Then in Acts chapter 26 verse

    Acts 26:28

  30. 28, it's used again says Then Agrippa said to Paul, you almost

  31. persuade me to become a Christian.

  32. What we can learn from this verse is that the name Christian

  33. was widespread enough enough so that Paul was easily recognized

  34. by this name, even by kings. As a Christian, this wasn't some

  35. confusing term that nobody really knew what it truly meant,

  36. but it was rather a clear identifier of someone who

  37. followed after Christ. And I think it's interesting too

  38. that Agrippa says to Paul, You almost persuade me to become a

  39. Christian. Becoming Christian is not

  40. something that we're forced into.

  41. It is something that we're persuaded to become.

  42. And that means that it is reasonable.

  43. We can reason within ourselves, and the faith that we have is

  44. not blind, we can reason it, we can be persuaded.

  45. And then thirdly, in First Peter chapter 4, verse 16, it says Yet

    1 Peter 4:16

  46. if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be

  47. ashamed, but let him glorify God.

  48. In this matter here we find more about what it means to be a

  49. Christian. A Christian is someone who

  50. follows Christ even to the point of suffering because of it.

  51. Being called a Christian is not representative of some casual

  52. connection that we have to Jesus, but it is.

  53. It is rather a strong inward devotion that we are willing to

  54. be persecuted for obviously we are not seeking after

  55. persecution doesn't feel good. We don't want to have to endure

  56. that. But if we're willing to bear the

  57. name of Christian, we must also be willing to suffer for

  58. Christ's sake. And not only do we endure it,

  59. but we rejoice in it. Because when we suffer for

  60. Christ, we glorify God when we let our faith stand up to those

  61. who hate us for it. So the question that arises is

  62. Christian an umbrella term for all those who claim to have

  63. faith in Jesus Christ, or is it a more specific identifier of

  64. those who are members of Christ's true church?

  65. Essentially what we're asking is, are denominations supported

  66. by Scripture? Is it true that those in the

  67. denominational world are Christians, as the Bible

  68. describes a Christian to be? What's often said is that

  69. denominations are just different paths to the same place.

  70. We're all going about it different ways, but we're all

  71. going to end up in heaven, right?

  72. And that's something that can be easy to, you know, maybe agree

  73. with it sounds pleasant. But let's see what the Bible has

  74. to say about denominationalism this saying different paths to

  75. the same place. The most prevalent argument that

  76. I've heard in favor of denominationalism, and maybe

  77. you've heard different ones, but from reading about it and from

  78. talking to other people, most of them go to John, the 15th

  79. chapter. It says there in verse 5, this

  80. is Jesus talking to his disciples on the night in which

  81. he would be betrayed. It says there, Jesus says there

  82. I am the vine, you are the branches.

  83. He who abides in me and I in him bears much fruit, for without me

  84. you can do nothing. The idea of this argument is

  85. that the denominations are the branches and Jesus is the vine,

  86. and in that way they're all connected to Christ.

  87. This would mean that the term Christian is an umbrella term

  88. for anyone who claims to follow Christ.

  89. I do think that there are a few issues with this argument

  90. though. For one thing, the context of

  91. John chapter 15 really does not support this conclusion in any

    John 15 chapter mention

  92. way. John chapter 15 is in the middle

    John 15 chapter mention

  93. of a conversation that Jesus is having with his disciples on the

  94. night in which he was betrayed, and he's taking this opportunity

  95. to prepare them for his absence to comfort them.

  96. He's telling them I'm going away and you're going to have to

  97. function. You're going to have to be

  98. Christians when I'm gone. And he's comforting them and

  99. he's preparing them for this. When Jesus is speaking to them,

  100. he says you are the branches. And it's very important, I

  101. think, to notice that he's speaking to individuals.

  102. He's not speaking to various religious organizations.

  103. He's not speaking to people who would go out and create their

  104. own church. And if this verse really was a

  105. green light to create different denominations, why didn't they?

  106. Why didn't the disciples that Jesus was talking to hear go off

  107. and create their own churches? If this was the green light, why

  108. don't we have evidence of anyone taking that opportunity?

  109. These early Christians save Judas were all members of Christ

  110. Church as it was established in Acts chapter two.

  111. I think that this was not interpreted then in that way,

  112. and these people obviously understood the context of this

  113. conversation better than maybe we could ever hope to.

  114. So if they didn't interpret it in this way, should we really be

  115. interpreting it in that way? Those in favor of

  116. denominationalism also look toward John Chapter 3, verse 16.

    John 3:16

  117. This is a very well known verse. You know, we see this pumped out

  118. by the world a lot, and it says there in John 316 for God so

  119. loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whoever

  120. believes in him should not perish but have everlasting

  121. life. If this was the only verse that

  122. we were given in Scripture about what it means to be a Christian,

  123. then yes, Christian is an umbrella term for anyone who

  124. believes in Christ who claims to have faith in Him.

  125. Unfortunately, that's not the case.

  126. This is not the only verse that we're given in Scripture

  127. regarding this topic. So we have to do some

  128. harmonization. We have to corroborate.

  129. The Bible does not contradict itself, so we have to look

  130. elsewhere and make sure that everything lines up.

  131. Everything agrees. Yes, it is true that you must

  132. believe in Jesus to be a Christian, but we know from

  133. other places in the Bible that we also must repent.

  134. We know that we must confess. We must be baptized.

  135. We must obey God. The Bible was not written for us

  136. to take verses in isolation and form doctrines based on them,

  137. but rather for us to read and understand the Bible so that we

  138. have a more complete picture of God's will.

  139. The point is, there is no real biblical support for

  140. denominationalism as we see it in the world today.

  141. So what does the Bible actually say about the church?

  142. Ephesians Chapter 4. We'll just read verse four at

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  143. first, but it says there there is one body and one spirit, just

  144. as you were called in one hope of your calling.

  145. So right off the bat, Paul's clearing up any misconceptions

  146. about multiple paths to the same destination.

  147. Just as we all share the same hope, we have a unity of

  148. expectation that we will inherit eternal life in heaven.

  149. We are share. We share unity in the one body

  150. which is the Church, and we can know what the one body is

  151. because we have the one Spirit who revealed that to us.

  152. John, chapter 16, Speaking of the Spirit, says, However, when

    John 16 chapter mention

  153. he, the Spirit of Truth has come, he will guide you into all

  154. truth. For he will not speak on his own

  155. authority, but whatever he hears, he will speak and he will

  156. tell you things to come. The reason why we have the Bible

  157. today is because we, the early church, certain men were given

  158. the Spirit, and they were able to know God's will and to write

  159. it down for us today. And because we have that one

  160. spirit, we know what the one body is, and we know that one

  161. hope that we have. So Paul says one path, one

  162. destination, and he continues to elaborate on this idea of unity

  163. throughout the rest of this passage.

  164. In verses 5:00 and 6:00 he says 1 Lord, we have unity of

  165. submission as Christians, 1 Faith.

  166. We as Christians have unity of information, one baptism.

  167. We have unity of salvation, one God and Father of all.

  168. We as Christians have unity of adoration of God the Father who

  169. is above all and through all. And in you all we are called to

  170. be united in this way. So it really doesn't make sense

  171. to me that it would be in God's plan for the church to be

  172. divided. The plea for unity is a huge

  173. theme in the New Testament and it completely goes against what

  174. we see in the denominational world.

  175. Ephesians chapter 5 verses 25 says husbands love your wives

    Ephesians 5:25

  176. just as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for her.

  177. The church was extremely important to Jesus and we have

  178. no right to pervert the very thing that he died to establish.

  179. Jesus died to these, died to establish the church.

  180. He bought the church with his blood, which means it's his

  181. church. It's not our church to do

  182. whatever we want with. We have to follow the scriptural

  183. pattern that we find in the Bible.

  184. So what should we expect the one true Church to be united by

  185. today? I have here three things.

  186. The church should be or Christians really should be,

  187. united in their actions. They should be united in

  188. doctrine, and Christians should be united in salvation.

  189. The way in which that we are united by our actions is that

  190. Christians are all called to behave in the same way.

  191. This is not to say that we're all the same person.

  192. God created us all differently, with their own unique

  193. personalities, interests, talents, roles.

  194. But the point is, we are united in behavior as Christians, in

  195. the fact that we are called to abstain from the same things and

  196. we are called to participate in the same things.

  197. Whether that's coming to church every Sunday morning, whether

  198. that's not going to drinking parties, not using bad language,

  199. things like this unite us as Christians in our behavior.

  200. And our behavior is something that is very, very important to

  201. Jesus in John chapter 14, verses 23 through 24 says There Jesus

    John 14:23–24

  202. answered and said to him, if anyone loves me, he will keep my

  203. word and my father will love him and we will come to him and make

  204. our home with him. He who does not love me does not

  205. keep my words. And the word which you hear is

  206. not mine, but the fathers who sent me.

  207. We see clearly that obedience is essential in demonstrating our

  208. love for Christ. And this means that our actions,

  209. the way that we live our lives, needs to reflect the teachings

  210. that we find in Scripture. These are things that really

  211. should set us apart from the world when we do them.

  212. In fact, it is by these actions, by the way, that we live our

  213. lives, that other people in the world know that we truly are

  214. followers of Christ. Jesus says in John chapter 13,

    John 13:35

  215. verse 35, By this all will know that you are my disciples if you

  216. have love for one another. In this context, Jesus is

  217. specifically talking about love. But I think that we can apply

  218. this to the broader scope of commands that were given in the

  219. Bible. When people hear or when people

  220. see the love that we demonstrate, when people hear

  221. the language that we use, they see the kindness we show.

  222. They can see our commitment to Christ.

  223. They can recognize us as His true followers.

  224. In James chapter one, verse 22, it says but be doer of doers of

  225. the word and not hearers, only deceiving yourselves again.

  226. The same idea of obedience as important as essential to the

  227. Christian walk when we fail to obey.

  228. We fail to love. When we fail to obey, we fail to

  229. show others that we are Christians.

  230. And when we fail to obey, we fail to behave in the way and be

  231. united in that behavior, in the way that the Church was intended

  232. to. We're also united by doctrine,

  233. like we read in Ephesians chapter four.

  234. We are of 1 Faith, and what this means is that Christians should

  235. have a common agreement about what the Scriptures teach.

  236. Now, this is not to say that every single Christian will

  237. agree on every single biblical nuance you know, but rather that

  238. we have an agreement on the foundational principles that the

  239. Bible teaches, Whether that's worship, whether that's

  240. communion, whether that's the plan of salvation, XYZ fill in

  241. the blank. Beyond that, we are united in

  242. the pursuit of rightly dividing God's Word without the influence

  243. of outside motivations, outside factors or beliefs.

  244. We are united and doctrine in the sense that we agree that

  245. there is absolute truth and that that truth can only be

  246. interpreted in one way, which is the way that it was intended to

  247. be interpreted by God. Second Timothy chapter 3, verse

    2 Timothy 3:16

  248. 16 says all scripture is given by inspiration of God and is

  249. profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for

  250. instruction in righteousness. Doctrine is so important, and it

  251. is so important that we agree upon it because it comes from

  252. God. The Bible is not a book full of

  253. opinions from different religious fanatics, but it is

  254. rather the information that the omniscient creator of the

  255. universe deemed it necessary for us to know.

  256. Logically, if there's a correct way to interpret Scripture,

  257. there must be an incorrect way in.

  258. Second Timothy chapter 4, verses 3 through 4 includes a warning

    2 Timothy 4:3–4

  259. about this. It says there for the time will

  260. come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to

  261. their own desires. Because they have itching ears.

  262. They will keep up for themselves teachers, and they will turn

  263. their ears away from the truth and be turned aside to fables.

  264. Paul's writing to Timothy to warn him about the very thing

  265. that we encounter today. False teachers are prevalent

  266. often because man's will and God's will don't perfectly

  267. align. We don't always want the same

  268. things for ourselves that God wants for us.

  269. This makes it easy to listen to what you want to hear, rather

  270. than what you truly need to hear.

  271. Christ Church needs to always remain on the lookout for this

  272. kind of teaching, and in order to do that, we need to have that

  273. unity of doctrine. We need to have that good

  274. understanding of God's word in order to guide to guard against

  275. false doctrine. Thirdly, we are united by our

  276. salvation. Remember that one baptism that

  277. Ephesians chapter 4 talked about?

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  278. This is the baptism for the remission of sins and we are

  279. united in salvation in the sense that all Christians have been

  280. baptized for the remission of sins and the Lord has added them

  281. to the church. Acts chapter 20, Acts chapter 2

Acts 20 chapter mention Acts 2 chapter mention

  282. rather verse 38 says Then Peter said to them, repent and let

  283. everyone of you be baptized in the name of Christ Jesus for the

  284. remission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy

  285. Spirit and a little further down.

  286. I don't have it on the board, but in the second-half of verse

  287. 47 it says, and the Lord added to the Church daily those who

  288. are being saved. So here we find the reason why

  289. we're baptized, and then we also find one of the effects of

  290. baptism. We are baptized for the purpose

  291. of having our sins washed away. But what also happens is that we

  292. are added to the Church by God. So in order to be saved, you

  293. must be baptized. In order to be in the Church,

  294. you must be saved. So not only are we united in our

  295. method of entrance into the church, you could say, but we

  296. are united in our Excuse me, we're not only united in our

  297. method of salvation, but in our terms of entrance into the

  298. church. Baptism is not merely the

  299. outward sign of an inward change, as many would have you

  300. believe, but it is what saves us and it is what makes us

  301. Christians. First Peter chapter 3, verse 21

    1 Peter 3:21

  302. elaborates on this idea. It says there is also an

  303. antitype which now saves us baptism.

  304. Not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a

  305. good conscience toward God through the resurrection of

  306. Christ Jesus as clear as day. The Bible teaches that baptism

  307. is for salvation. Anyone who claims to be saved in

  308. any other way is unfortunately not basing their salvation off

  309. what the scriptures teach. Paul speaks more about baptism

  310. in Romans chapter 6, says there in verses 3 through 8.

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  311. Or do you not know that as many of us, as we're baptized into

  312. Christ Jesus, we're baptized into his death, Therefore we are

  313. buried with him through baptism into death, the justice Christ

  314. was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father.

  315. Even so, we also should walk in newness of life, that importance

  316. of obedience, that importance of our actions.

  317. Verse 5 For if we have been united together in the likeness

  318. of his death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of his

  319. resurrection. What I want to draw from this

  320. passage is the emphasis on the unity that we gain through

  321. baptism. Paul says we're united together

  322. in the likeness of death and resurrection as we die to sin

  323. and are made alive in Christ and Christ is truly what it all

  324. comes down to. In John chapter 14 verse 6,

    John 14:6

  325. Jesus says There Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth,

  326. and the life. No one comes to the Father

  327. except through me. So keep that in mind as we move

  328. on. All of the ways in that we've

  329. just discussed, that we're united as Christians point back

  330. to Jesus. And really, this is because

  331. Jesus is at the center of all of our lives.

  332. Jesus is what we all have in common.

  333. It is only because of Jesus that we act the way we do.

  334. It's only because of Christ that we believe that which we do.

  335. It is only because of Christ that we can have the hope that

  336. we do. We're united in our actions, in

  337. our doctrine, and in our salvation, And we're united in

  338. Jesus, who is the way, the truth, and the life.

  339. The Church of Christ is exactly that.

  340. It is Christ's church. The phrase Church of Christ is

  341. not simply a label that we call ourselves, but it is an

  342. identifier of ownership. We aren't the Church of Christ

  343. because we thought the name sounded cool or we thought it

  344. would look good on sign. We're the Church of Christ

  345. because Christ bought the church with his blood and we are united

  346. by him. And really that's the

  347. distinction between Christians and everyone else.

  348. We are members of Christ Church, not man's church, First

  349. Corinthians chapter one, verses 12 through 17 says, Now I say

  350. this, that each each of you says I am of Paul, or I am of

  351. Apollos, or I'm of Cephas, or I am of Christ.

  352. Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you?

  353. Were you baptized in the name of Paul?

  354. I thank God that I baptize none of you except Christmas.

  355. And guys, lest anyone should say that I had baptized in my own

  356. name, yes, I also baptize the household of Stephanus.

  357. Besides, I do not know whether I baptize any other, for Christ

  358. did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with

  359. wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no

  360. effect. This is a passage that I think

  361. many of us are familiar with, and we say rather we find the

  362. same idea emphasized. We don't follow after Christ.

  363. We fall, or we don't fall after man, rather we follow after

  364. Christ. The issue was that in the church

  365. in Corinth, people were dividing themselves up based on who had

  366. baptized them, based on what preacher they liked.

  367. You could say I think it's one of the most clear pictures that

  368. we have in the Bible of how God feels about denominationalism.

  369. Simply dividing up the congregation based on who

  370. baptized who, I would argue is a far less significant split than

  371. we see in the religious world today.

  372. But Paul was quick to correct this.

  373. He didn't say no, it's OK that you guys are just, you know, as

  374. long as you guys are still come to church every Sunday together.

  375. Division is not something that God intended to be in his

  376. church. Paul even says that he's glad he

  377. didn't baptize many of them because he didn't want to get in

  378. the way of the unity that all Christians need to have, all

  379. Christians should have in Christ.

  380. Verse 17 is really what hit home with me, though says there, For

  381. Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the

  382. gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ

  383. should be made of no effect. Paul says that even preaching

  384. the gospel with wisdom of words can take the focus away from

  385. Jesus. The focus of the church, the

  386. focus of our worship, the focus of our preaching is not the

  387. preacher. The focus of this sermon is not

  388. me. The focus of all of this is

  389. Christ. And we, when we allow ourselves

  390. to get caught up in what Paul calls the this wisdom of words,

  391. this show we display. It's all about me.

  392. I'm such a great preacher. I'm such a great singer.

  393. Whatever it is, the cross of Christ is made of no effect.

  394. That's a powerful statement. And that's what happens when we

  395. take the glory away from God, and when we give it to man.

  396. We tie the hands of Christ and pervert the church that he died

  397. to establish. So to briefly summarize, what

  398. about the name? The name Christian belongs to an

  399. individual who is a member of Christ's one church and is

  400. devoted to Christ, even to the point of enduring persecution.

  401. Secondly, different paths to the same place.

  402. The biblical plea for unity proves that divisions such as

  403. though as those seen in the denominational world are

  404. unscriptural and they are not a plan, are not a part of God's

  405. plan for the church. And finally, united by what

  406. Christians are united in a shared devotion toward Christ

  407. and the pursuit of His will in all things, we are Christians,

  408. we are assembled here today as Christians, and there is

  409. beautiful simplicity in that we are Christians.

  410. We are nothing more. We are nothing less.

  411. That concludes my thoughts for this morning.

  412. But we never want to close without offering the invitation.

  413. And this isn't my invitation. This isn't the congregation

  414. here, this invitation. You know, we just talked about

  415. how it's all about Christ. And this is Christ's invitation

  416. to you. And he died so that you would

  417. have the opportunity to accept that.

  418. And what that means is that you have heard the word of God.

  419. You believe that Jesus is the Son of God.

  420. You repented of your sins, you confess that Jesus is the Son of

  421. God, and you are baptized for the remission of sins if there's

  422. one who has taken those steps. But maybe you sinned in a public

  423. nature or you would like to request the prayers of the

  424. Church on your behalf. We invite one of either case to

  425. come while we stand and sing a song.

  426. We thank you for listening to our podcast put on by The Church

  427. of Christ at 2215 Plans Rd. in Bakersfield.
